DAY THREE OF COSTA FLW SERIES ON LAKE ERIE PRESENTED BY POLARIS CANCELLED DUE TO HIGH WINDS

DAY THREE OF COSTA FLW SERIES ON LAKE ERIE PRESENTED BY POLARIS CANCELLED DUE TO HIGH WINDS

[print_link]

WHAT: The third and final day of competition at the Costa FLW Series event on Lake Erie presented by Polaris has been cancelled due to high winds.

NOTES: Tournament director Ron Lappin made the call earlier this morning after boating out to the mouth of the protected harbor where the tournament was headquartered.

“There’s no sense in taking chances. This is the type of waterway that can get really dangerous in a hurry,” said Lappin. “Going out in even marginal conditions is asking for trouble, so for the best interests of everyone involved we ended the tournament with the standings as they are.”

Neil Farrow of St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada, was declared the winner after weighing 24 pounds, 4 ounces, of smallmouth bass Thursday. Lappin said that the top 43 places each on the boater and co-angler sides would receive checks.

The Costa FLW Series consists of five U.S. divisions – Central, Northern, Southeastern, Southwestern and Western – along with the International division. Each U.S. division consists of three regular-season tournaments with competitors vying for valuable points that could earn them the opportunity to compete in the season-ending Costa FLW Series Championship. The 2018 Costa FLW Series Championship is being held Nov. 1-3 on Lake Guntersville in Guntersville, Alabama, and is hosted by the Marshall County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

5 Baits You Need For Lake Okeechobee Summer Fishing! – MTB

[print_link]

Lake Okeechobee is one of the premier bass lakes in the country for fishing early in the year, but it tends to be overlooked in the summertime.

When the heat is on and the water is hot, bass fishing is still good on the Big O for numbers of bass. Largemouth bass are schooling then, so you can catch plenty of fish and an occasional lunker even when temperatures rise above 100 degrees.

Here are five lures from Karl’s Bait & Tackle Shop you should try for summertime largemouth on Lake Okeechobee.

1. Spro Bronzeye Popping Frog

spro bronzeye poppin frog
Some of the best action of the day occurs in the early morning so get to your favorite spot before sunrise and start throwing this topwater frog. If the forecast calls for sunny skies all day, the topwater bite will only last about the first hour after sunrise. If the skies are overcast, you can throw the frog all day.

You can throw other hard plastic topwater lures such as walking baits or poppers, but the frog is most productive because it is weedless and can be worked more effectively through the vegetation. Key areas to throw the frog are submerged hydrilla beds and spots where hydrilla mixes with other grasses.

Make long casts into the vegetation and vary your retrieve until you find out how bass want the lure presented. Aggressive bass usually prefer the frog moving so try twitching the bait two or three times and let it sit for a couple of seconds. If bass ignore this retrieve, pop the frog once and let it sit longer to trigger a strike.

2. Strike King KVD Square Bill

STRIKE KING KVD SQUARE BILL 1.5
When bass are schooling and busting bait on the surface, cast this crankbait to the surface activity. Catching these bass on a topwater lure is more exciting, but the crankbait is more effective because it will cover water quicker and dives to 3 to 6 feet to catch schooling fish at various depths.

The crankbait is also great for running over offshore brush piles where summertime bass also like to hide. The bulky body and stout lip of this crankbait allows you to deflect the lure off of the brush pile without it hanging up in the cover.

Buy The KVD Squarebill!

3. Missile Baits Ike’s Head Banger Jig 3/4 oz /Catch Co. Saw Craw

MISSILE BAITS IKE'S HEAD BANGER JIG
If you are seeking a trophy bass, flip this combination to the edges of bulrushes, pencil reeds and lily pads in the early morning and as the sun rises pitch farther back into the thickest part of the vegetation. Big bass prefer slower moving big meals rather than chasing down smaller prey, so this combination of a magnum-size jig and bulky craw is an ideal main course for a fat, lazy bass. Choose jigs and craws in crawfish colors (brown and green pumpkin) or black and blue flake to imitate bluegill, a favorite prey of big bass in the vegetation.

As the jig drops into the weeds keep a close vigil on your line because most strikes occur on the initial fall. Once the jig reaches bottom pop your rod tip a couple of times to hop the lure. Watch for any weed movement to indicate a bass is honing in on your jig and if you don’t see that or get a bite after a couple of hops, reel in the jig and pitch to another target.

4. Biospawn ExoStick

BIOSPAWN EXOSTICK 5"
If you want to get more bites in the vegetation, switch to this Texas-rigged stick worm and pitch it to the same targets that you would pitch the jig. You will need a heavy weight for punching the stick worm through thick vegetation so match the lure with a pegged 1/2-ounce sinker. Black blue flake/blue is the best stick worm color for imitating the bluegill bass ambush in the weeds.
The straight Senko style worm works better than a curly-tail worm in the vegetation because it glides through the weeds easier, whereas the curly tail tends to stick to the plants as it swims. You can use the same retrieves as you use for the jig to catch bass in the weeds with the ExoStick.

Buy The ExoStick!

5.  Culprit Worm

CULPRIT WORM
A curly-tail plastic worm is hard to beat almost any time of the year on Lake Okeechobee, but summer is a prime time for this bass catcher. Try dark colors such as June bug and red shad to tempt Okeechobee summertime bass.

Use a Texas-rigged worm with a 3/8-ounce weight and a 3/0 or 4/0 straight shank worm hook for flipping the worm to the outer edges of the weeds in the morning before the sun drives bass deeper into the vegetation. You can also rig the worm on a 3/8-ounce swivel jighead for fishing offshore brush piles or in open water for schooling bass.

OVERVIEW- The lake has been busy the past several weekends! Largemouth bass fishing has been good at night this past month! Water temperature will be in the upper 80’s. Best times will be early morning, late afternoon and at night. August can be a good month to fish for stripers.

Largemouth Bass- Fishing for largemouth bass will be fair this month. Best lures will be large plastic worms, jigs, drop shots, deep diving crank baits, Carolina rigs and shaky heads. Points, brush piles, rocky areas, ledges and deep docks will be the best areas to try your luck. Best depths will be from surface to 30 feet deep. Remember to take care of the bass and release them! Fishing will be good at night. Best lures at night are wake baits, crank baits, large plastic baits, top water lures and 3//8- 1/2 oz. jigs.

Smallmouth Bass- Fishing will be fair. Best areas will be humps, ledges and rocky areas. Best lures will be tubes, jigs, top water lures, hair jigs and deep diving crank baits. Best areas will be in the mid to the lower sections of the lake. Cloudy days with light wind and at night are good times to try your luck! Look for areas with rocky ledges next to deep water. Smallmouth will be hard to catch this month. Most smallmouth bass will suspend near schools of baitfish.

Striped Bass- Fishing will be good this month. Stripers will be caught in the mid sections of the lake, the lower sections towards the dam and in the large creeks. Best lures will be swim baits, buck tails and Zoom flukes fished on 1/2 to 3/4 oz. lead heads. Best time to fish is cloudy days, early morning and late afternoon. The best depths will be from the surface to 80 feet deep. Live bait fished on down lines and planner boards work this month. The stripers will constantly be on the move. Find the largest concentration of shad. Night fishing will be poor this month.

Crappie- Fishing for crappie will be poor this month. The best depths will be 10 to 25 ft. deep. Crappie will be found around deep docks, brush piles, and fallen trees. Docks with brush piles are usually good areas to hold crappie. Small live minnows and 1½ to 2 inch tubes or shad shaped plastic lures fished on 1/16 to 1/8 oz. lead heads will work best to catch crappie this month. Best areas are the main creeks and the upper section of the lake.

TIP OF THE Month- Always have your kill switch attached to yourself & wear your life jacket. Try to find the areas with the largest concentration of bait fish. You can also hear reports about local fishing on the website: THE BASS CAST RADIO SHOW & WSLK radio each month. Make sure your running lights are on after dark! Remember to TAKE A KID FISHING!

Finessse Flipping: Tossing Finesse Baits In Heavy Cover – MTB

Finessse Flipping: Tossing Finesse Baits In Heavy Cover

[print_link]

Finesse flipping is a great option when flipping a jig or big worm into heavy cover fails to trigger a strike, try a finesse bait and get ready to set the hook. Flipping finesse lures presents different profiles and actions to bass holding tight to thick cover. The smaller lures also give you a chance to slip a bait easier into the hiding places of big bass, whereas big bulky lures tend to hang up in the thick cover.

Here’s a look at three finesse lures you should try flipping into thick cover when fishing pressure or cold fronts turn bass into picky eaters.

Finesse Flipping Tubes

Finesse Flipping Tube

Finesse flipping a tube presents a shad-imitation profile and has more action than a bulky jig and plastic chunk. When you flip a jig in a bush, it falls straight down and when you hop it up, the jig comes straight up and goes straight back down. When you pop up a tube, it has an erratic action coming up and going back down. It never falls the same way twice, so this erratic action triggers more strikes. The type of cover dictates whether you should Texas rig your tube with either a 1/8- or 3/16-ounce bullet weight. If you are flipping shallow cover that you can slip the lure into easily, use a 1/8-ounce weight, but for thicker wood cover or matted weeds try the 3/16-ounce sinker.

I never peg my sinker when fishing a tube bait so it will fall freely and create more action. When you pop up the tube, the sinker slides down the line and cause the bait to hesitate. That makes it suspend for just a second and gives it an erratic fall on the way down. Attach the flipping tube to a 4/0 or 5/0 extra wide gap hook for the best hookset.

For finesse flipping in clear water, try a tube in a smoke color with red and black flakes. For dirty water, flip a black neon or green pumpkin/chartreuse tail tube. On lakes with heavy vegetation, choose tubes in green hues such as watermelon or green pumpkin.
The tube can be presented in the same flipping fashion as a jig and chunk. Flip the tube to specific targets in the cover and let it drop to the bottom. Pop it off the bottom once or twice, then bring it out of the cover and let it fall on the outside of the cover one time. If that doesn’t trigger a strike, reel it in and present it to the next target.

Finesse Flipping Soft Jerkbaits

This lure offers a different profile and falls slower in the target zone when flipped into heavy cover. Instead of resembling a worm or crawfish, the jerkbait looks more like a shad falling in front of a bass. For flipping in clear water or when bass are finicky, try a 5-inch jerkbait on a 3/0 hook. When fishing dirty water or for aggressive bass, choose a 6-inch jerkbait and stick it on a 4/0 or 5/0 hook. Jerkbaits in shad hues work best in clear water, while chartreuse models are best for murky conditions.

The jerkbait is most effective with the least amount of weight added to it. If possible flip the lure without any weight, but in most situations a little weight is needed to present the lure in tight places. Use a 1/8- or 3/16-ounce screw-lock bullet weight to flip the jerkbait into those hard-to-reach areas. Nail weights also work, but make sure you place the weights through the side of the jerkbait rather than lengthwise, which inhibits the lure’s action.Standing timber or flooded willows are prime cover to flip the jerkbait. Flip the weighted lure to the target, let it fall to the bottom, hop it once or twitch and then try a different spot. When flipping the weightless lure, let it fall a couple of feet and twitch it a couple of times before reeling it in.

Flipping Finesse Worms

This subtle lure is thinner and has less action than bulky jigs or most styles of plastic worms so give it a try when bites are hard to get in heavy cover.
Texas rig this worm with a 1/8- or 3/16-ounce weight and a 3/0 light wire worm hook.
Choosing a worm color depends on the water conditions. This technique usually works best in stained water so try black or red shad. For clear-water presentations, pick transparent colors such as watermelon.

The finesse worm’s straight, slender body makes it ideal for flipping into tight places. Flip it to a target, slowly hop it up and down a couple of times and then move on to another target. The bite is usually the same as any other worm, but bass seem to hang onto the little worm pretty well to give you a better chance for a hookup.

7 Tips to Make Big Swimbait Bass Bite By Jason Sealock

Some of the coolest experiences in bass fishing can be had with big swimbaits because they will expose a lot of big bass you might not otherwise see. But it would be a lie to say it’s all cool stories all the time. There can be a lot of frustration with hunting bigger bass with big swimbaits and lot of near misses that make you question what you are doing. I think everyone that has thrown big swimbaits has struggled with turning followers into biters at some point.

I’ve had so much success fishing swimbaits deep, that it’s gotten to be all I wanted to fish. But I’ve been fishing big swimbaits shallow a lot more and had some follow days that have had me questioning throwing big baits more recently. So I have been bouncing ideas and experiences back and forth with other big bait anglers.
