NORTH CAROLINA’S WALTERS WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE PIEDMONT DIVISION TOURNAMENT ON JAMES RIVER

NORTH CAROLINA’S WALTERS WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE PIEDMONT DIVISION TOURNAMENT ON JAMES RIVER

Co-angler Title Goes to Danville’s Howerton

HENRICO, Va. (July 16, 2018) – Boater Todd Walters of Kernersville, North Carolina, brought five bass to the scale Saturday weighing 16 pounds, 5 ounces, to win the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Piedmont Division tournament on the James River. For his efforts, Walters pocketed $3,592.

“I don’t have much experience on tidal fisheries, but I have a couple of travel partners that live there, so they helped me out a lot,” said Walters, who earned his fifth win in FLW competition. “I also got some practice in two weeks ago when the tide was at the same level.”

Following a 1-hour morning fog delay, Walters said he headed 20 miles east of takeoff to target bass in the backwaters of Herrin and Cowell creeks. He said he caught fish anywhere from 3- to 10-feet deep on a 7-inch black and blue flake-colored Culprit Fat Max Worm, a shad-colored Rapala DT6 crankbait and a 6-inch Morning Dawn-colored Roboworm Straight Tail Worm on a drop-shot rig.

“I targeted any type of wood cover – mainly laydowns – and a few different brush piles. I fished very slowly. It was hot and there wasn’t any wind,” said Walters. “The tide wasn’t moving much when I caught most of my fish. I had to be quiet and make long casts – that’s why I picked up the drop-shot so I could cast farther and keep the bait in front of the fish longer. I think that was key for me.”

Walters said he ended up putting a dozen keepers in the boat by the end of the event.

“I needed this win. I’m hoping I can carry this momentum into the (Costa FLW Series) event on Lake Erie next week. Buffalo, New York, is my hometown and it’d be great to do well.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Todd Walters, Kernersville, N.C., five bass, 16-5, $3,592

2nd:         Frank Poirier, North Prince George, Va., five bass, 14-8, $1,796

Florida’s Garrett Takes Co-angler Title

[print_link]

GADSDEN, Ala. (July 16, 2018) – Boater Adam Brown of Rainbow City, Alabama, brought five bass to the scale Saturday weighing 17 pounds even to win the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Bama Division tournament on Lake Neely Henry. For his efforts, Brown pocketed $3,917.

Brown said he spent his day fishing the backs of three creeks in the mid-river area, including Big Wills Creek.

“I didn’t do well until the sun got up around 10 a.m. and the fish started holding tight to cover, then I was able to target them better,” said Brown, who logged his first win in FLW competition. “I fished stumps, bushes – basically any type of cover that was back there. Almost every fish I caught came from 2 feet or less of water.”

Brown’s primary bait was a white Stan Sloan’s The Aggravator long-arm spinnerbait with No. 5 willow leaf blades and a trailer hook. He said he followed it up with a 3/8-ounce black and blue-colored Bo’s jig with a Zoom Super Chunk Jr. trailer of the same color. By the end of the day, Brown said he caught around 15 keepers.

“I ran the spinnerbait across the stumps and then pitched the jig,” said Brown. “I had to fish slow and steady. I hit each creek at least twice, and as far as the big fish go, I caught about two from each creek.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Adam Brown, Rainbow City, Ala., five bass, 17-0, $3,917

2nd:         Kyle Dorsett, Odenville, Ala., five bass, 16-11, $2,478

3rd:          Johnathan Stuckey, Tallassee, Ala., five bass, 16-1, $1,507

4th:          Bradley Jones, Aragon, Ga., five bass, 15-10, $1,014

5th:          Wes Logan, Springville, Ala., five bass, 14-13, $783

6th:          Andy Kilgore, Kingston, Ga., five bass, 14-10, $718

7th:          Allen Yarborough, Birmingham, Ala., five bass, 13-9, $620

7th:          Terry Tucker, Gadsden, Ala., five bass, 13-9, $620

Best In Bassmaster College Series Will Tackle Oklahoma’s Tenkiller Lake For Championship

[print_link]

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — One hundred thirty-six of the top student/angler teams in the nation, representing 78 universities, will face a tough test on Oklahoma’s Tenkiller Lake for the 2018 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops, July 19-21.

To qualify, the teams had to finish in the top 10 percent of the field in one of four tour events, win a state qualifier or finish inside the Top 30 in Team of the Year standings.

In addition, one sophomore team is coming back as a major threat. An automatic berth went to defending champions Jake Lee and Jacob Foutz of Tennessee’s Bryan College. They led the field wire-to-wire at Minnesota’s Lake Bemidji in the 2017 Championship.

Foutz went on to win the College Bracket and fish the 2018 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods on South Carolina’s Lake Hartwell before he finished his first year in college. Nicknamed “The Paperboy” by Bassmaster Emcee Dave Mercer, Foutz took two routes this season and is competing in both the Eastern and Central 2018 Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Opens.

All teams will battle through the first two days of competition on Tenkiller and the Top 12 will face off Saturday in pursuit of the national championship.

Northeastern State University and Tour Tahlequah join B.A.S.S. in hosting this three-day event, which will provide a glimpse at young anglers who may become some of the top pro anglers of the future.

Tahlequah Area Tourism Council Director Mercedes Goins said area residents are proud to host the tournament.

“The championship is an opportunity for the Tahlequah area to come together and share with anglers, their families and visitors why we love to call Tahlequah home,” she said. “Tour Tahlequah has been working in partnership with Northeastern State University and Cherokee Nation over the past six months, along with numerous local businesses, to make this event a success. We are eagerly anticipating seeing our efforts come to fruition.”

The Top 4 teams will advance to the College Bracket, set for Aug. 14-16 on Milford Lake out of Junction City, Kan., where they will split up to compete individually in a bracket-style, catch-and-release competition. The eight will be whittled down to one student angler who will be awarded a berth in the 2019 Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, set for March 15-17 on the Tennessee River out of Knoxville.

Those who make it will have earned it, according to Elite Series pro Jason Christie of nearby Park Hill, Okla., who grew up fishing the waters of Tenkiller. He also played basketball for host Northeastern Oklahoma University. He will be the keynote speaker during Sponsor Night, set to take place Wednesday evening before official competition kicks off Thursday morning.

“It’s going to be challenging because of the heat and because it is midsummer on a highland reservoir. That’s always tough,” Christie said. “I think the word you’re going to hear again and again is ‘inconsistent.’ But that’s also why you have a championship on a lake like this, to find out who can rise to the challenge.

“I’m interested to see how it’s going to shake out,” he added. “I know what I would do, but I’m curious to see if these kids figure out something I wouldn’t try, or something I’ve forgotten about.”

Daily takeoffs for the championship will be at 6 a.m. CT from Cherokee Landing State Park, and weigh-ins will begin 3 p.m. daily at Northeastern State University Beta Field. Fans are encouraged to come early and enjoy the Bassmaster Outdoors Expo featuring interactive exhibits and giveaways. ESPNU cameras will be filming on-site, 1-5 p.m. All activities are free and open to the public.

Kevin Hensley wins ABA on Lake Gaston July 16,2018

Kevin Hensley wins on Lake Gaston

[print_link]

It was a relatively tough bite on Gaston Saturday. Water temps were in the low to mid 80’s. Sunshine, blue bird skies and heavy boat traffic were the order of the day.  Kevin Hensley found most of his fish in the scattered clumps of grass in secondary creeks along the shoreline, enticing them for the most part with jigs. He brought in the winning stringer of 13.33-pounds of bass anchored with a very nice 5.58-pound fish to also capture big fish honors for the day. The big fish came off wood adjacent to the grass, also on a jig. His win earned him $590 for the day of fishing.

Right on his heels and less than an ounce behind was Tyler Purcell with a five-fish limit at 13.28-pounds. Rounding out the money winners was Randy Mcfadden with 10.57-pounds.

The Virginia division will be on the Chickahominy and James rivers for our next event on 4 August, launching from Chickahominy Riverfront Park.

Buzz Bait Fishing: Modifications To Up Your Buzz Bait Catches

Buzz Bait Fishing: Modifications To Up Your Buzz Bait Catches

[print_link]

A buzz bait tweak here to make a squeak there. Changing blades for a higher ride. Bending wires to make a low rider.

These are some of the tricks you can use to create a better buzz bait. Although lure manufacturers have added some of these modifications through the years, you can still tinker with buzz baits to improve their effectiveness in various bass fishing situations. For instance, try removing the blade of a 3/8-ounce buzz bait and replacing it with a blade from a 1/2-ounce model to make the lure stay on top better at slower retrieve speeds.

Buzz bait modifications depend on the time of year and weather and water conditions. During the spring, you can use a smaller, subtle buzz bait, which requires fewer modifications. When fishing clear water on calm days, you might switch to a smaller blade on your buzz bait or bend the wire to make the lure ride differently on the surface.

The heat of summer and the cooling water in the fall are the best times to tinker with buzz baits. During these seasons, bass become more aggressive so you can tempt these fish with souped-up noisy buzz baits.

Exchanging Buzz Bait Blades

Switching blades allows you to adapt your buzzer to any changes in conditions you encounter. It’s easy to change a buzz bait blade because a lot of companies have a 90-degree bend at the end of the blade arm. Straightening the bend with a pair of pliers allows you to remove the old blade. After attaching the new blade, bend the wire back to its original position.

If you want your lure to fall slower, switch to a larger blade on your buzzer. Convert your lure into a quieter buzz bait by replacing the original blade with a smaller one.

Replacing the original blade with others composed of different metals create a unique sounding buzz bait. Try anodized aluminum blades to create a lot more squeal.

Wire Bending Your Buzz Bait

Tinkering with the buzz bait’s wire generates different sounds as well. You can bend the wire close to the lure’s head to make the blade clack or pinch it down closer to the lure’s arm so the blade ticks against it.

In open water situations, you can bend down the buzz bait’s lower arm to make the body run deeper. That way bass don’t have to come so far to the surface to get the buzzer.

Roughing Up A Buzz Bait’s Rivets

You can also dabble with buzz bait components to create a squeaky buzzer. One of the most alluring sounds for bass is generated from the area where the buzz bait’s blade touches the rivet. When the blade comes through the water it gets pushed back against the rear rivet. If the edges of the top of the rivet and the bottom of the blades are rough, then a lot of times that really enhances the noise. You can tune your buzz bait by filing uneven edges into the rivet and the blade.

The constant spinning of the blade on the rivet eventually creates grooves in the components causing the parts to squeak. So try to wear a buzzer down before you actually start using it. While driving to the lake, speed up the wearing down process by hanging a buzz bait out of your vehicle’s window so it spins at high rpms for a long time.

Mashing down the rivet on the lure’s shaft with a pair of pliers also generates more squeak. That way the rivet can’t spin on the shaft so when it sits there you get a lot more squeak out of the blades.

Adding Hooks And Trailers To Your Buzz Bait

Buzz baits are notorious for drawing short strikes from bass, but you can counter that problem with additions to improve your chances of landing fish. Attach a 6-inch plastic lizard or 5-inch Fluke-style plastic jerkbait to your buzz bait, which increases the buzzer’s action and draws vicious strike. You would think bass would want a smaller bait when they short strike a buzzer but a lot of times the fish will eat it better if you put a big trailer on the back.

Trailer hooks also improve a buzzer’s hook-setting capabilities. A small single hook trailer will stick most short-striking bass. After placing surgical tubing over the eye of the trailer hook, insert the lure’s hook into the tubing past the hook’s barb. This setup keeps the trailer hook in a straight line with the lure and prevents it from swinging freely to minimize hang-ups.

You can also use a 1/0 treble hook as a trailer, but cut off one of the trebles before placing the surgical tubing over the hook’s eye. Then attach the trailer to the lure’s hook with the two remaining hooks of the treble riding upward for better hookups.
