LA HARPE’S WILSON WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE ILLINI DIVISION TOURNAMENT ON REND LAKE

LA HARPE’S WILSON WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE ILLINI DIVISION TOURNAMENT ON REND LAKE

Co-angler title goes to Walnut Hill’s Arning

[print_link]

WHITTINGTON, Ill. (June 25, 2018) – Boater Travis Wilson of La Harpe, Illinois, weighed a 16-pound, 5-ounce limit of bass Saturday to win the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Illini Division tournament on Rend Lake. For his efforts, Wilson netted $5,705.

Wilson said he caught his fish along a 150-yard stretch of riprap on the south side of Illinois Route 154. He said he fished there the entire day, catching six keepers in the process.

“I found the fish in practice Friday late in the day. I hadn’t caught a keeper all day, but around 4 o’clock I caught three good ones along that stretch,” said Wilson, who logged his first win in FLW competition. “I started there Saturday morning, but it was slow. My co-angler and I only caught one or two per hour, but every time I considered leaving, I’d catch another one. I had three around 10 (a.m.) and I decided I was going to stay there the rest of the day.”

Wilson said he used a 7-inch Junebug-colored Zoom Finesse Worm with a 1/8-ounce head.

“If you used anything heavier it was really hard to keep your bait out of the rocks,” said Wilson. “Some of the fish were in 3 feet of water – close to the bank – but some of my better bites came from 6 or 7 feet down. With the light bait you had to be super patient because it’s hard to keep it down in that depth range. Basically, it was light enough to stay out of the rocks, but heavy enough to keep it down.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Travis Wilson, La Harpe, Ill., five bass, 16-5, $3,705 + $2,000 Ranger Cup Bonus

2nd:         Colby Schrumpf, Highland, Ill., five bass, 13-10, $1,853

3rd:          Dan Morehead, Paducah, Ky., five bass, 12-15, $1,469

Oklahoma City’s Bradford Grabs Co-angler Title

WAGONER, Okla. (June 25, 2018) – Boater Russ Warner of Tahlequah, Oklahoma, weighed five bass Saturday totaling 15 pounds, 15 ounces, to win the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Okie Division tournament on Fort Gibson Lake. Warner took home $5,165 for his win.

“I fished the mid-lake area and targeted offshore rock piles,” said Warner, who logged his first career victory in FLW competition. “All of my fish came from between 6 and 10 feet of water and were on main-lake spots, close to the river channel.

“Every fish I weighed came on a 10-inch Yum Ribbon Tail worm,” continued Warner. “Junebug was the best color, but I did switch to cranberry later in the day. My last fish bit around 2 (p.m.).”

Warner said he fished slow, rotating through eight different stops. He said he hit each at least three times and caught five keepers.

“I got my MinnKota Ultrex trolling motor a couple months ago and wouldn’t have won without it,” said Warner. “The wind was blowing pretty hard and I could get lined up on the rock piles I had marked. I hit Spot Lock, and it would hold me there as I faced the wind. I could make 20, 30 or even 40 casts to the same spot, sometimes waiting until that 40th cast to get a bite.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Russ Warner, Tahlequah, Okla., five bass, 15-15, $5,165

2nd:         Roger Fitzpatrick, Eldon, Mo., five bass, 15-10, $2,782

5th:          Terry Thomas, Nixa, Mo., five bass, 15-3, $990

5th:          Jacob Capps, Muskogee, Okla., three bass, 15-3, $990

7th:          Marcus Sykora, Osage Beach, Mo., five bass, 14-15, $861

Mark Pack wins ABA on Kentucky Lake with 23.91 lbs June 23,2018

Mark Pack wins at Kentucky Lake

[print_link]

Mark Pack of Hendersonville, Tennessee took home the win on Saturday, June 23, 2018 in the Kentucky division.  This division held its second tournament of the regular season on Kentucky Lake out of Kentucky Dam in Gilbertsville, Kentucky. Pack brought five-fish to the scales weighing 23.91-pounds with a kicker fish of 5.30-pounds.  For his victory, he took home a check of $5000.

“I started my day making a long run down the lake, and I found two spots that were holding fish pretty good.  I had caught most of my fish by 8:00 a.m. and finished out my limit around 10:00 a.m.  All my fish were caught by using a swimbait, football head jig and a big worm,” said Pack.

Coming in second place on the boater side was Ivan Maxwell of Tunnel Hill, Illinois weighing in five-fish for a total of 21.27-pounds.

“I started my day running to the South end of the lake fishing a big worm in about 16ft – 18ft of water dragging it real slow.  I caught all my fish by 8:00 a.m. only getting 6 – 10 bites the whole day,” said Maxwell.

Cole Floyd of Leesburg, Ohio finished third for the boaters weighing in five-fish for 18.53-pounds.

“I started off fishing shallow on the south end of the lake. I lost about 3-4 fish right off the bat then decided to move out to deeper water where I caught about 30 fish using a jig and a drop shot,” said Floyd.

Finishing fourth place was Edward Gettys of Paris, Tennessee brought a five-bass limit to the scales for 16.88-pounds. Rounding out the top five was Joey Schmidt of Hickory, Kentucky weighing in five fish for 15.89-pounds.

The biggest bass weighed in for the boaters was a 6.45-pounder caught by Robert Linton of Cadiz, Kentucky.  He took home a check of $280 dollars for his efforts. “I caught my big fish about 8:00 a.m. in the morning using a 6-inch Z-man finesse worm,” said Linton.

In the Co-Angler Division Austin Strawmyer of Camel, Indiana brought three-fish to the scales weighing in at 19.63-pounds, giving him a 6.34-pound lead over second place. He took home a check of $900 for his catch.  Strawmyer also had the biggest bass for the Co-Angler Division weighing 8.07-pounds, earning a check of $140.

“I was throwing a 5-inch zoom swimbait in ayu color with a ½ oz. swimbait head, with ½ oz.yankum football head jig, fishing rock piles and around bridges on the lower end of the lake,” said Strawmyer.

In second place for the co-anglers was Ray Dickens of Marion, Illinois bringing three-fish to the scales for 13.29-pounds.  He took home a check for $400 for his efforts.
“We ran to the south end of the lake fishing a shell bed just off the channel. I caught all my fish on a 9-inch paddle tail worm using green pumpkin and black grape colors.  We had a great day,” said Dickens.

Coming in third place was JoJo Walsh of Lyles, Tennessee with a three-bass limit weighing 12.95-pounds. Walsh took home a check for $300 for his efforts.

“I had a very slow day starting off losing an 8 plus pounder and didn’t have another bite until about 12:30 p.m. where I got my first keeper after making a long run south. I managed to catch my last two fish with about 15 minutes left to go on a spot we found on the north end of the lake where I caught my 2 largest fish using a June bug big worm,” said Walsh.

Finishing fourth place was Brendan Murphy of Cape Girardeau, Missouri weighing in three-fish for 11.31 pounds. Rounding out the top five in the Co-Angler Division was Dean-Hesse of Brandenburg, Kentucky, he brought three-fish to the scales weighing 8.53-pounds.

The Mystery Smallmouth At Lake Oahe

PIERRE, S.D. — The entire state of South Dakota has a population about equal to that of the city of Indianapolis. On June 29-July 2, however, the population around Pierre will expand by 107 of the world’s best bass anglers, as the Berkley Bassmaster Elite at Lake Oahe presented by Abu Garcia will be contested on the massive fishery.

This will mark not only the first time the Elite Series has visited the state, but also will mark the first time most of the field will have seen the lake.

Lake Oahe, which was ranked 20th in the Central Division of Bassmaster Magazine’s 100 Best Bass Lakes this year, is a massive body of water. The Missouri River impoundment covers 370,000 acres, flowing from central South Dakota into North Dakota. If you take out the Great Lakes and Great Salt Lake, Oahe is the biggest lake by volume in the U.S., besting even Lake Okeechobee. So, there will be plenty of room for the Elite field to spread out.

Although Oahe is best known for its walleye, the smallmouth here are set to turn heads of even the most jaded smallmouth fanatic. The few local bass tournaments held on the lake are typically won with more than 20 pounds, and bass exceeding 5 pounds are landed with frequency.

Elite Series pro Brandon Palaniuk of Hayden, Idaho, is especially excited about the event.

“I have not fished the lake, but I’m stoked because it is the closest event we have ever fished to my house,” said the Idaho native. “It’s only 14 hours away!”

And because it is a smallmouth lake, Palaniuk has a lot of confidence. “I’m sure those fish will have little idiosyncrasies as far as the type of structure they prefer and the type of forage they focus on this time of year, but I’ll still go practice with the same 10 rods and baits that I’d start any smallmouth tournament with. Smallmouth are smallmouth.”

Another smallmouth specialist, Elite angler Seth Feider of Bloomington, Minn., believes Oahe is going to be off-the-charts good.

“It is in the middle of nowhere, and those bass have never seen a lure. I know it’s one of the biggest lakes in the nation, and we only have three days of practice, but I don’t think you’re gonna have to try real hard to find fish. I guess a guy could run 200 miles if he wants to, but I’m guessing you’ll be able to catch them just as good by the ramp.”

Palaniuk agrees, but adds, “Covering water to find bigger bass is going to be key, I think. This is the type of fishery where it’s not going to be your big fish that separates you from the pack. Instead, it will be your smallest fish that separates you.”

Daily takeoffs will occur each competition day at 6 a.m. CT from the Spring Creek Resort & Marina, and weigh-ins will be held at Steamboat Park in Pierre at 3 p.m.

The Bassmaster Elite Series Outdoors Expo will be held in conjunction with the tournament. The Expo will take place at Steamboat Park on Saturday and Sunday beginning at noon. The expo will feature boat demo rides, an aquarium, free prizes and the latest fishing products on the market. All activities are free and open to the public. TENNESSEE’S HUFF WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE MOUNTAIN DIVISION TOURNAMENT ON BARREN RIVER

TENNESSEE’S HUFF WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE MOUNTAIN DIVISION TOURNAMENT ON BARREN RIVER

Tennessee’s Goss Grabs Co-angler Title

GLASGOW, Ky. (June 25, 2018) – Boater Rod Huff of Monterey, Tennessee, brought five bass to the scale Saturday weighing 18 pounds, 6 ounces, to win the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Mountain Division tournament on the Barren River. Huff earned $7,552 for his win.

Huff said he mainly fished rock and wood and caught his fish shallow, in less than 5 feet of water. He said his day was split between four areas, spanning from up the main river, to both Peter and Beaver creeks.

“Early on in the morning I caught my biggest using a (green-pumpkin) ChatterBait with a (Zoom) Z-Craw of the same color up the main river, around the wood and rock,” said Huff, who earned his second career win in BFL competition. “I ran the bait over a small laydown and put it in the boat.”

Huff’s fish – a 5-pound, 8-ouncer – was the heaviest of the event. He also weighed in two on a Texas-rigged green-pumpkin Zoom Z-Craw and the rest on a white 3/8-ounce custom buzzbait.

“My other big bite came between 12 and 1 o’clock flipping the Z-Craw in Peter Creek,” said Huff. “I basically covered water with the ChatterBait and buzzbait, and if I came to a treetop or something like that I’d flip it.”

Huff said he ended up catching around seven keepers over the course of his day.

“The key for me was hitting the areas at the right time. There wasn’t a lot of pressure up shallow. I actually thought the tournament would be won offshore. That, along with my two big bites, was what sealed the deal for me.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Rod Huff, Monterey, Tenn., five bass, 18-6, $5,552 + $2,000 Ranger Cup Bonus

The T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Mountain Division tournament on the Barren River was hosted by the Glasgow-Barren County Tourist & Convention Commission.

The top 45 boaters and co-anglers in the region based on point standings, along with the five winners in each qualifying event, will be entered in the Oct. 25-27 BFL Regional Championship on Lake Chickamauga in Dayton, Tennessee. Boaters will compete for a top award of a Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude outboard and $20,000, while co-anglers will fish for a new Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude outboard.

The 2018 BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 128 tournaments throughout the season, five qualifying events in each division. The top 45 boaters and co-anglers from each division, along with the five winners of the qualifying events, will advance to one of six regional tournaments where they are competing to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American. Top performers in the BFL can move up to the Costa FLW Series or even the FLW Tour.
