June 23, 2018 – Prattville, Ala. – The Alabama River poses interesting challenges for anglers.  With plentiful shoreline cover to choose from, and the variable of the current to factor in, a day of competitive fishing there is never a sure thing.

With so many things to consider, and so much on the line, the 225 team field of the Alabama Bass Trail’s Southern Division set out on Saturday June 23 to decide several things. Not only was there the question of who would win and collect paychecks in the final event; but also, the Southern Division Anglers of the Year title and who would automatically qualify for the 2018 ABT Championship in October on Neely Henry Lake in Gadsden.

For the individual event, the team of Gabe Aldridge and Wes Wiggins posted an impressive total of 15.88 pounds of Alabama River largemouth to claim victory and the $10,000 winner’s prize.  They narrowly edged out Rob Lee and Steve Winslett, who posted a total weight of 15.83 pounds – anchored by the 6.10-pound Mountain Dew Big Bass of the event – to finish second for the day.

Aldridge and Wiggins said that they targeted the Swift Creek area of the pool, deciding to focus on backwater areas that had a mixture of shallow grass and boat docks.  They said that they used swim jigs and a Flippin’ presentation to secure the victory.

They said they had a good day of fishing, catching 20 to 30 fish on black and blue or white swim jigs and watermelon red YUM Christie Critters and Big Texan Reaction Innovations Sweet Beavers.  “We culled for the last time at about one o’clock today, but certainly didn’t think we had enough to win,” they said.  “It hasn’t sunk in yet, this is the biggest tournament we’ve won, so it’s pretty amazing; we’re really proud of this.”

Lee and Winslet fished main lake tree tops that had fallen into the water.  They used one of Lee’s homemade black and blue 3/4-ounce Flippin’ jig tipped with a Flippin’ Blue colored Zoom Super Chunk trailer.  They also caught several fish on a 3/16-ounce Davis Baits Shaky Head with a Red Bug colored Big Bite Baits Finesse Worm.

Their finish surprised them. “We thought that we could catch 10 to 12 pounds, so this is quite a surprise,” they said.  “But, that’s what happens when you luck into a six pounder; it really helps your bag.  It was a tough day overall, but we did enough to be here, so the outcome was amazing.”

Heading into the final event, the team of John Pollard and Dallas Weldon were tied with Gentry Gordy and Chad Smith for the lead in the race.  There were several other teams that were within striking distance of the leaders should they stumble.  The first of the two teams to come through were Gordy and Smith, and they stumbled, leaving the door open.

However, when Pollard and Weldon dropped 15.11 pounds on the scales, they sewed up the Southern Division Anglers of the Year Title by finishing the day in seventh place; their total for the season was 1,032 points. That meant they earned slightly over 206 points per event, or a 19th place finish for the year.  “This has been a great year, we really couldn’t have expected things to go like this,” they said.  “This is the toughest field around, so to me standing here as Anglers of the Year is truly an accomplishment that really means something; we’re very proud of this.”

California Native Ish Monroe Comes From Behind To Win Mississippi River Bassmaster Elite

LA CROSSE, Wis. — Notching his fifth Bassmaster victory, Ish Monroe of Hughson, Calif., produced a solid limit of largemouth bass that weighed 16 pounds, 2 ounces to win his first victory in six years at the 2018 Bassmaster Elite at Mississippi River presented by Go RVing.

Monroe’s four-day total was 65-7, edging out Jacob Powroznik of North Prince George, Va., who produced a four-day limit of 64-12. Powroznik finished in second place.

Across the four official competition days, there were four different leaders, which kept the event very exciting until the final weigh-in.

Monroe started out in 20th place on Thursday’s opening round, moved up to sixth on Friday, third following Saturday’s semi-final round of competition and then into the top spot on Championship Sunday.

The impressive victory earned the 44-year-old pro valuable Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year points and a $100,000 payday.

“Everybody knew that the rising river levels would affect the fish and how they positioned on the structure,” Monroe said. “I had a plan, but early on Day 1, I got stuck on a sandbar, and that was as stuck as I’ve ever been in a bass boat. I freed my boat, and it turned out to be a blessing in disguise.”

Monroe said that after he got stuck, he was hesitant to run the Mississippi River backwaters too quickly, so he decided to fish his way into the area he had originally intended to start the tournament.

“I noticed some very similar grass and duckweed not too far from where I got stuck, so I decided to start there,” he said. “I ended up catching a solid limit of bass before I ever got to my original destination. That taught me a lot about where the fish were located and how they were set up.”

As the tournament went on, and the river levels continued to rise, the fish moved further back into the shallow backwaters that were covered in grass, lily pads, duckweed and other types of aquatic vegetation.

“Today, the larger bass were as far back into the slop as they could be, but once I found them this afternoon, I caught plenty of very nice bass. It was important to understand where the bass moved as the water rose, and that was the key component to my victory this week,” he said.

“Every fish I brought to the scales this week came on my Ish Monroe Phat Mat Daddy frog by River2Sea,” he said. “It’s a heavier frog with a larger profile, which was critical to bust through the dense duckweed that covered most of the water where my fish came from.”

Monroe used his signature series 7-foot, 4-inch Daiwa Tatula Elite Series frog rod paired with a Daiwa Zillion SV baitcaster that was spooled with 65-pound Maxima braided line.

The combo was critical to hooking fish and pulling them from the dense cover that covers much of the Upper Mississippi River.

The last time Monroe won was in 2012 on Florida’s Lake Okeechobee, which made this win all the sweeter.

“Every time I win, it means more than the last,” he said. “The competition on the Elite Series is getting tougher and tougher, especially with all the young anglers on the scene doing so well. Winning on such a fantastic fishery means the world to me.”

Rounding out the Top 5 are Randall Tharp with 64-5, Gerald Spohrer with 64-0 and Jacob Wheeler with 62-3.

Monroe also won the Toyota Bonus Bucks Award of $3,000 for being the highest-placing eligible entrant in the program, and the Power-Pole Captain’s Cash Award of $1,000 for being the highest-placing angler who is registered and eligible and uses a client-approved product on his boat.

The second-highest-placing eligible entrant in the Toyota Bonus Bucks program, Powroznik, received $2,000.

Brent Chapman was awarded $1,000 for the leading the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year points race at the end of the event.

The tournament was hosted by Explore La Crosse.

Bass Cover – Where Are The Bass Hiding Throughout The Seasons?

[print_link]

When fishing a lake that has diverse bass cover, the first step to finding bass is to identify and sort through the types of available cover.

The time of year has some influence on the sorting process. For instance, if the lake has standing timber, laydown logs or logjams, you should concentrate on water less than 10 feet deep. Wood is good cover throughout most of the year, except in the dead of winter. In the spring, bass start to move up from deeper water to the spawning areas and hold on the first wood cover available. In many lakes that wood cover is manmade brush piles placed around boat docks, points or creek channels. As summer progresses and the water gets hot, bass will use this wood cover as shade.

Bass Cover Breakdown

The best time for fishing aquatic weeds such as lily pads, hydrilla or milfoil is later in the spring, throughout the summer and into early fall. Weeds go through a dying process in colder water, which causes them to decay and use up oxygen. This dying process also drives away bass.

Bass will hang around rocks any time of the year, but I like to fish rocks from late fall, through the winter and into early spring. Bass switch over to crawfish as their main source of food during those times of the year on some bodies of water, and rocks are the best crawfish habitat in any body of water.

bass cover fishing docks

Fishing Manmade Bass Cover

Bass also relate to manmade cover such as boat docks. The fish are drawn to docks most of the year, but the better times to fish this type of cover is after the water temperature rises into the 70-degree range and then throughout the summer and into early fall. Many bass will spawn behind boat docks, which offer protection from the wind.

If an area has a lot of the same bass cover, you have to look for a change. For instance, look for a spot where a rock bank changes from pea gravel to chunk rock, or breaks in weed lines. Weeds are never in a perfectly straight line, so one of the very best areas to fish is an isolated patch of vegetation along a weed line.

Look for isolated trees when fishing timber. If you are fishing an area with lots of wood cover look for a depth change or a difference in tree types.

MICHIGAN’S NELSON WINS SECOND STRAIGHT COSTA FLW SERIES NORTHERN DIVISION OPENER ON LAKE CHAMPLAIN PRESENTED BY POWER-POLE

MICHIGAN’S NELSON WINS SECOND STRAIGHT COSTA FLW SERIES NORTHERN DIVISION OPENER ON LAKE CHAMPLAIN PRESENTED BY POWER-POLE

Ron Nelson tops FLW Series Northern Division record 205-boat field, wins $96K including New Ranger Boat

[print_link]

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (June 23, 2018) – Pro Ron Nelson of Berrien Springs, Michigan, brought a five-bass limit weighing 19 pounds, 8 ounces, to the scale Saturday to win the Costa FLW Series Northern Division opener on Lake Champlain presented by Power-Pole. Nelson’s three-day total of 15 bass weighing 60 pounds even was enough to earn him the top prize of $96,700 including a new Ranger Z518 with a 200-horsepower outboard engine.

Nelson primarily fished the north end of the main lake around the Gut, which is the passage between Grand Isle and South Hero. He targeted smallmouth bass on beds, and largemouth near reeds, grass and docks. In the end, Nelson ended up weighing all smallmouth throughout the week.

“I caught my fish mostly sight-fishing this week. I found the beds pre-fishing and tried to find ones both deeper and shallow that the other anglers had missed,” said Nelson, who earned his third career FLW Series victory. “I fished beds that weren’t visually obvious to the average angler, and that made a big difference. I caught fish around guys all week. I didn’t have a secret spot or anything like that.

“I knew I had a lot of smallmouth from practice and figured I’d try to find as many as I could in the 4-pound category, and then kind of go blind-fishing for largemouth after I caught a solid bag of smallmouths,” Nelson continued. “On Day One, after I had my smallmouths, I actually ran to a largemouth spot and lost one in the 5-pound range that I thought would really hurt me, but I was fortunate enough to have a solid limit of smallmouth.”

Nelson caught his smallmouth on a Watermelon Gold-colored Poor Boy’s Erie Darter and a translucent Reaction Innovations Smallie Beaver rigged on a 1/4- or 3/16-ounce darter head. When he fished for largemouth, Nelson used a Yamamoto Senko and a jig.

“Today I switched to using the Darter on a drop-shot rig for a little bit because of the wind, but mostly fished the jighead,” said Nelson. “I was really happy with my equipment – everything worked well. I’m fishing the new 520L Ranger and it was a really nice haul.”

Nelson said one of the key parts to his success was how he broke down his areas.

“My biggest thing was being thorough and learning an area – that was the best strategy,” said Nelson. “There was no secret part of the lake that had bigger fish. It was tempting to find a 4-pounder then run five miles for another 4-pounder, but there might be another one only a hundred yards away. I’d find a solid fish and build off of it, and then go to another area and do the same thing.”

The top 10 pros on Lake Champlain finished:

1st:          Ron Nelson, Berrien Springs, Mich., 15 bass, 60-0, $96,700

Randall Tharp Takes Control With One Day To Go At Mississippi River Bassmaster Elite

Randall Tharp Takes Control With One Day To Go At Mississippi River Bassmaster Elite

[print_link]

LA CROSSE, Wis. — Randall Tharp of Port St. Joe, Fla., scrapped his fish catching game plan because floodwaters washed out his primary hot spot and forced him to find a place to catch bass on the upper Mississippi River.

That adjustment might earn him a second Bassmaster Elite Series title and a healthy $100,000 payday.

Tharp’s efforts produced 15 pounds, 10 ounces of bass today, giving him the lead going into Championship Sunday at the 2018 Bassmaster Elite at Mississippi River presented by Go RVing.

His two-day total is 49-12 — only 1 ounce ahead of Aaron Martens of Leeds, Ala.

Martens will start the final round Sunday in second place with 49-11.

The moderate flooding of the Upper Mississippi has been a hot topic in La Crosse this week. It’s affected the fishing for most of the field — some good and some bad. For Tharp, it’s kept him on his toes.

“I knew my pattern was falling apart. The more the water levels increased, the more concerned I’ve been that my bass would move,” he said. “And they did. I started out in the same area I have been over the past couple of days, and after an hour or so I knew the fish weren’t there any more. I decided to call an audible, and it paid off.”

The 49-year-old pro said that he was catching bass right along a section of the bank that is now under water, and the bass are no longer positioned on the same structure.

“I probably stayed too long this morning,” Tharp said. “Decisions are critical in this game, and today I made the right ones after changing my plan and moving to a different spot. Hopefully tomorrow I can keep the momentum rolling and win this thing.”

Tharp won a Bassmaster event in 2016 that was played out on two Arkansas lakes: Bull Shoals and Norfork. A second Elite Series title would mean a lot to the former Forrest Wood Cup champion.

“I know what it means to win one of these, and that would be great. But right now I’m focusing on staying on top of the fish,” he said. “The standings are very tight, and it could come down to a single big bite for one of us tomorrow. One ounce ahead of Aaron Martens isn’t enough to be comfortable.”

Martens was sharing water for the past three days with California pro Chris Zaldain, who finished in 28th place with a final three-day total of 42-7. That means Martens will be fishing his favorite spots all by himself during the final round of competition.

“I’m not worried about catching a limit at my spot. I’m confident I can do that,” he said. “The fish are there, but finding a big fish that weighs 4 pounds or better is the challenge. I know they are there because I caught two during practice. To have a shot at winning tomorrow, I’m going to need a couple of bigger bass like that.”

Ish Monroe of Hughson, Calif., will begin Championship Sunday in third place, only 7 ounces out of the lead.

“It’s always great to spend a week fishing here,” Monroe said. “I love tournaments where I can fish my strengths, and I’ve only got one rod on my front deck. It’s rigged up with Ish’s Phat Matt Daddy Frog from River2Sea, and my best spots only seem to be getting better, even with the high water. Tomorrow is going to be exciting.”

Rounding out the Top 5 are Gerald Spohrer of Gonzales, La., with 49-2 and Casey Ashley of Donalds, S.C., with 48-1.

The current leader of the Phoenix Boats Big Bass award is Chad Pipkens of Lansing, Mich., thanks to a 5-8 largemouth bass he caught on Day 1 of the event. If no one catches a larger bass, Pipkens will earn a $1,500 bonus.

Takeoff will occur at Veterans Freedom Park in La Crosse, Wis., at 6 a.m. CT, and final weigh-in will be at Valley View Mall at 3 p.m.

The Bassmaster Elite Series Outdoors Expo and Rock-N-Ribs Festival are being held in conjunction with the tournament. Fishing Shallow And Deep For Hot Water Bass – MTB

Fishing Shallow And Deep For Hot Water Bass

[print_link]

When summer heat causes the shallows to feel like bath water, many anglers are inclined to probe offshore structure in search of hot water bass.

However some bass remain shallow no matter how hot it gets as long as the fish have plenty of cover.  Even when water temperatures top the 90-degree mark, bass stay in thin water on lakes which have an abundance of cover that allows bass to hide in the shade.  Bass might be in a dormant stage because their metabolism slows down, but they remain in water as shallow as 1 to 2 feet and still bite if they have plenty of shade and cover.  Summertime bass on grassy lakes can be found hiding in the shallow hydrilla and peppergrass under lily pads.

Flipping shallow-water plants presents a challenge, especially when bass burrow into the thickest part of the vegetation. So flip a 6- to 7-inch plastic worm or plastic craw into the weeds. The thickness of the weeds dictates how heavy of a weight to use.  Try a 5/16-ounce sinker for pitching to holes in the vegetation or weed edges, but switch to a 1- or 1 1/2-ounce weight for punching your lure through matted grass. After dropping your lure through the weeds, retrieve the worm with a slow, shaking presentation.

Hot Shallow Water Bass

You can also target shallow-water summertime bass on reservoirs laden with flooded timber. The shady side of log laydowns, stumps, and flooded bushes are prime pieces of cover to target for summertime bass looking to escape the sun.

The back ends of creek arms and main channel pockets on the upper end of a reservoir are also prime spots for shallow summertime bass. Boat docks, log laydowns and stump fields are prime targets to try for summertime bass in the tributary arms.

Fishing Jigs For Hot Water Bass

Pitching a 3/8-ounce jig and plastic craw or chunk to the shady sides of docks or wood cover works best for shallow bass in the upper ends of a reservoir.  Let the jig fall and keep it in contact with the bottom during your retrieve. Drag the jig along the bottom for 8 to 10 feet or until you no longer feel the lure bumping into the cover.

With more anglers fishing offshore now, you can beat the heat and the crowds by targeting summertime bass in the shallows. However, don’t be afraid to go offshore if the shallow bite dies. Dragging a heavier jig (1/2oz. and above) along offshore ledges from 8 to 20 feet can be highly effective if you find the right mix of depth and structure. When fishing offshore for summertime bass, use your electronics to locate depth changes that also feature some form of hardcover like brush piles, old bridge pilings, or chunk rock. The combination of a steep depth change offshore and hardcover can hold large schools of bass throughout the summer. Heavy jigs, Carolina rigs, and deep diving crankbaits are among the top baits to effectively fish these offshore bass hangouts.

Martens Takes Over Lead After Two Days At Mississippi River Bassmaster Elite

[print_link]

LA CROSSE, Wis. — With this tournament being his fourth visit to the legendary Upper Mississippi River, Aaron Martens of Leeds, Ala., is now eyeballing the $100,000 payday as he took the lead at the 2018 Bassmaster Elite at Mississippi River presented by Go RVing.

The water is rising at La Crosse, but it’s not stopped the big largemouth and smallmouth bass from eating with regularity. River levels are expected to remain within the forecasted range: 12 feet high by Sunday, and cresting sometime Monday.

Twelve feet is considered flood stage, which will certainly impact the fishing from day to day.

Regardless of challenging river conditions, Martens posted a fine five-bass limit that weighed 17 pounds, 14 ounces to push him to the top of the official leaderboard with a two-day total of 34-3.

The three-time Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year finished in fifth place in 2012 when the Elite Series visited La Crosse, second in 2013 and 30th in 2016.

To say he wants to win here is an understatement.

“I know the winning limit of fish is swimming where I’m fishing,” he said. “I want to prove it this time. But a number of factors are going to have to go my way for that to happen.”

Over the years, he’s spent a lot of time across this vast fishery, and he said it’s an amazing place to come and catch a lot of bass. But his location continues to produce quality fish year after year.

“I keep coming back to the same location when we compete here. I’ve done well fishing in that area every single time, and I see no reason to change my approach,” he said. “It might bite me this time, but right now I’m confident the fish I need to win are there to be caught.”

Martens is sharing water with California angler Chris Zaldain.

Zaldain put together an impressive limit that weighed 17-11 pushing his two-day total to 32-7, which was good enough for the fourth-place spot on the leaderboard.

“Chris and I are both fishing for the same fish, but we’re being respectful of each other, and that’s important,” Martens said. “We both want to win, and fishing so closely together will make things interesting for sure.”

The impending floodwaters do not seem to be affecting Martens or Zaldain, but for Randall Tharp of Port St. Joe, Fla., that might be a different story.

Tharp caught 17-12 the second round for a two-day total of 34-2, and will be starting the semifinals on Saturday in second place.

“During practice, and even today, I thought the rising water would hurt my pattern,” Tharp said. “But surprisingly, the fishing was better today. I caught what I weighed in early enough to sit down and eat lunch, a luxury that I don’t often take advantage of during a tournament. I hope my luck continues tomorrow.”

Rounding out the Top 5 are Gerald Spohrer with 32-13, Zaldain with 32-7 and Jacob Powroznik with 32-6.

Takeoff will occur at Veterans Freedom Park in La Crosse, Wis., at 6 a.m. CT, and weigh-in will move to Valley View Mall on Clinton Street for Saturday and Sunday and begin at 3 p.m.

The Bassmaster Elite Series Outdoors Expo will be held in conjunction with the tournament. It will take place at Valley View Mall on Saturday and Sunday beginning at noon. The event will feature boat demo rides, an aquarium, free prizes and the latest fishing products on the market. The Rock-N-Ribs Festival will also be happening at Valley View Mall along with concerts, food and the bbq competition. All activities are free and open to the public.
