Hogan Becomes The Hero At B.A.S.S. Nation Eastern Regional On Winyah Bay

Hogan Becomes The Hero At B.A.S.S. Nation Eastern Regional On Winyah Bay

GEORGETOWN, S.C. — After winning a team title Thursday as a member of Team Delaware, Mark Hogan made it a clean sweep for “The First State” when individual championships were decided Friday in the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Eastern Regional presented by Magellan Outdoors.

Hogan caught a five-bass limit on Friday that totaled 15 pounds, 9 ounces. That limit, his third in the three-day tournament, gave him a 31-15 total and a victory in the boater division of the final B.A.S.S. Nation regional of the year.

Hogan earned $6,000 for the win. He bested 172 other boaters from 17 states in the eastern U.S. and the Canadian province of Ontario for the individual title. He also won a spot in the 2018 Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Championship presented by Magellan Outdoors. That tournament will be held later this year on a date and fishery to be announced.

It was a lot for the 50-year-old Milford resident to absorb.

“I’m really emotional right now,” Hogan said. “I’m doing what I can to hold it back.”

He did everything but hold it back, however, on the Winyah Bay system in this week’s regional. Scorching temperatures near 100 degrees and inexperience with fishing tidal systems hampered the bite for much of the field, but Hogan consistently improved as the tournament advanced.

Hogan caught a 7-5 limit on Day 1, which was nearly 7 pounds behind Florida’s Dave Turner, who led the first two days of the tournament.

Hogan chipped into Turner’s lead with a 9-1 limit on Thursday, and he blew past him on Friday with the tournament’s big bag. Hogan’s limit was anchored by a 5-4 lunker that was only 1 ounce shy of the Big Bass of the week.

The key to his upswing, Hogan said, was switching to a Senko worm on Friday. He also got out of creek mouths and hunkered down in the back of a pond off the Waccamaw River.

“It was a Gary Yamamoto black and blue laminate worm I went to,” he said. “I was in about 2 or 3 feet of water. Where I was at, there wasn’t much tide going on. Actually it was high water. Knowing tidal situations like I do living in Delaware, something told me to just try that Senko. I’m glad I did.”

Hogan has represented Delaware in numerous regionals through the years, but this will be his first trip to the B.A.S.S. Nation Championship. He said after Delaware finished second in the team standings at last year’s Eastern Regional on the Upper Chesapeake Bay, winning both team and individual honors this year is very special.

“I joined the Tidewater Bass Club back in 1999,” Hogan said. “All those guys are really good sticks. If it wasn’t for them being really competitive, I probably wouldn’t be here. You have to get better to fish with them.”

Turner finished second among boaters with a 30-3 total over three days. Norman Mullinax of North Carolina was third with 29-2.

Georgetown resident Gary Pope led the nonboater field from start to finish. He caught three-bass limits each day and had nine bass that totaled 17-6. That earned him a $3,000 top prize and a spot in the B.A.S.S. Nation Championship. This will mark his second trip to nationals.

Pope also threw Senko worms throughout the tournament, except his choice was a green/white combo he pitched to structure. He threw a blue crawfish lure he custom makes, as well.

Unlike Hogan, Pope started the tournament fast and had to hang onto his lead. His best bag came on Wednesday when caught three bass that weighed 10-4. His catch slipped to 3-9 on both Days 2 and 3, but it was enough to win.

“Knowing the right time, the right place and the right things helped me make some decent situations,” Pope said. “It’s great to win here at home. I work right here at the paper mill. Everyone has been really supportive. It’s been a great experience.”

Stacey Proctor Jefferson of nearby Conway finished second with 15-13. Jimmy Myers of Delaware was third in the nonboater division with a 15-12 total.

An additional 173 nonboaters competed in the regional.

The leading boater and nonboater from each of the 18 competing teams earned a berth in the B.A.S.S. Nation Championship.

The Big Bass Award of $500 went to Pennsylvania’s Brad Bressler, who caught a 5-5 bass on Thursday. Virginia’s Travis Lugar earned $250 for the 5-1 bass he boated in the nonboater division.

In all, $89,900 in cash and prizes was awarded in the regional.

Georgetown County hosted the event.

Themselves the targets of anglers fishing with light tackle, roach are critically important prey items for apex predators, including zander and pike. Large perch are also no stranger to roach, frequently feasting on shoals of the smaller, abundant baitfish.

The master luresmiths at LIVETARGET recognize the importance of roach to the diets of many of Europe’s most important gamefish, and have engineered an ultra-realistic, roach-imitating lure designed to target and tempt them.

To be introduced at EFTTEX 2018, the LIVETARGET Roach Swimbait combines biologically precise anatomical features and color patterns with biomimetic action and robust components to create a dynamic new swimbait for pike, zander and perch. The lure’s unique three-dimensional anatomy, including fins, tail, head and eyes, couple with a true-to-life profile to synthesize the perfect illusion of a living roach, fleeing for its life from prowling predators.

The LIVETARGET Roach Swimbait’s intelligently engineered tail oscillator generates a unique, roach-inspired swimming action and vibration that elicits hot pursuit and violent strikes. Precision factory rigging ensures that the bait is ready to use immediately, achieving better balance without the need for frequent adjustment or tuning.

The LIVETARGET Roach Swimbait is offered in three sizes: the Roach 140 at 14 cm (5 1/2”) and 42 g (1 ½ oz), the Roach 160 at 16 cm (6 ¼”) and 64 g (2 ¼ oz), and the Roach 200 at 20 cm (8”) and 96 g (3 3/8 oz), each internally weighted and precision balanced for a medium-slow sink speed. The three Roach Swimbaits have two distinct hook arrangements.

The LIVETARGET Roach 140 and 160 swimbaits are each armed with a single, extra-wide gap hook that rides behind the bait’s dorsal fin, an anatomical feature that doubles as a shield to protect the hook from collecting vegetation and other debris. In addition, these two Roach Swimbaits feature a ventral-side accessory pin for convenient on-the-water customization using willow leaf attractor blades, or even a secondary hook to increase your catch-rate.

In contrast, the largest LIVETARGET Roach swimbait, the Roach 200, features a unique hook configuration, with twin extra-strong double hooks riding on the ventral side of the lure. Specialized rare-earth magnets, integrated into the soft plastic body of the Roach Swimbait, hold the double hooks tight to the lure, ensuring a stable swimming action and maximizing hook-up ratios. Each of the belly hooks can be independently positioned to ride with their points turned upward, which enhances the lure’s swimming action and reduces the amount of debris collected when the swimbait is fished through heavier cover, or with the points turned downward, resulting in greater exposure of the hooks within the primary strike zone. This user-customizable hook configuration is unique among swimbaits and makes the LIVETARGET Roach an incredibly versatile choice for targeting apex predators.

Park Falls, WI (June 22, 2018) – The serious among them call it their “boat”. Because saying “kayak” might insinuate their mindfully chosen means of travel plays second fiddle to something motorized. Nada. This growing army – some wielding paddles, others advanced pedals – prefers the people-powered approach to fishing. And finally, a rod manufacturer has legitimized these hardcore, fishing-while-exercising anglers with a premium rod series built just for them: Mojo Yak.

“This was one of the most challenging, but also incredibly rewarding rod development projects in company history, said Jason Brunner, Director of Engineering. “When doing research and development on a bass or walleye rod, we go to species experts who invariably fish from traditional, motorized boats, so we don’t have to think as much about the watercraft, rather focusing squarely on power, action, lure-selection and general rod performance.”

To best describe Mojo Yak is to begin with its kayak-specific characteristics, each included to improve fishability or thwart the common challenges of operating in such tight, sometimes unforgiving quarters. Delaware Takes B.A.S.S. Nation Eastern Regional Team Title On Winyah Bay

The Delaware B.A.S.S. Nation wins the team competition Thursday with 172 pounds, 9 ounces at the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Eastern Regional presented by Magellan Outdoors on Winyah Bay. Dave Turner of Florida is leading the individual competition with a two-day total weight of 21-3.

Delaware Takes B.A.S.S. Nation Eastern Regional Team Title On Winyah Bay

GEORGETOWN, S.C. — Delaware’s nickname is “The First State,” and its anglers won first place on Thursday in the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Eastern Regional presented by Magellan Outdoors.

Team Delaware’s 20 anglers (10 boaters and another 10 nonboaters) finished with a two-day total of 114 bass that weighed 172 pounds, 9 ounces. That gave them a narrow 1-pound margin over hometown favorite Team South Carolina, which caught 108 bass totaling 171-9 pounds.

The Delaware B.A.S.S. Nation earned a Triton 189 TrX boat powered by a Mercury 150 Pro XS engine with the victory. In all, 17 states from the eastern U.S. fielded teams, as did the Canadian province of Ontario.

The tidal system of Winyah Bay here in coastal South Carolina closely resembles the tidal waters Delaware anglers know well, and that likely assisted the winning squad.

“This area is very similar to what we fish back home,” said Delaware B.A.S.S. Nation President Shawn Taylor. “There are a lot of cypress trees and rivers like home. I think there’s more depth to the water here, but it’s a lot alike.”

Jason Vaughn led Delaware boaters with a two-day total of 10 bass that weighed 18-8 which has him in fourth place overall. Jimmy Myers, also of Delaware, caught three-bass limits on both days of fishing for a total of 12-12, which is good for second place in the nonboater division.

The Top 3 boaters and nonboaters from each state advanced to fish on Friday, as did the Top 34 anglers in the money line. Fifty-six boats (112 anglers) will compete Friday.

“I’m speechless,” Myers said of his team’s victory, as well as the chance to compete individually Friday for a berth in the 2018 Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Championship presented by Magellan Outdoors to be held. “It’s like a double win.”

Florida finished third in team standings with 108 bass for 168-9. North Carolina was fourth with 105 bass for 155-3, and Pennsylvania placed fifth with 97 bass for 154-11.

Dave Turner of Team Florida maintained the lead among individual anglers on the boater side with a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 21-3. The Crystal River resident managed a limit weighing 6-15 on Thursday, to follow his Day 1 total of 14-4 (still the heaviest bag of the tournament).

“I think a couple of factors affected my area today,” Turner said. “Number 1 is pressure. I had maybe double the number of boats around me today. I’m pretty sure that (as well as) the physical conditions with the (99 degree heat) didn’t help me. The tide was really high today, too.”

Still, Turner is in the pole position heading into Friday’s final day of competition. He said he has to keep an open mind when he’s fishing tomorrow.

“I may have to start over with a new game plan,” he said. “I’ll probably go to the same area I was today to start, but I have to be willing to make a move if I need to.”

Tyler Webb of Team West Virginia is in second place in the boater division with 19-15, and David Boyd of Florida is third with 19-10. Delaware’s Vaughn is fourth, and he’s followed by North Carolina’s Norman Mullinax with 18-5.

Georgetown resident Gary Pope maintained the lead in the nonboater division after a lackluster limit of 3-9 on Thursday. He has a 13-13 total.

Pope said he and his boater had trouble with their bow lights at Thursday’s launch, and they were delayed approximately 30 minutes while the problem was fixed.

Still, Pope wasn’t blaming faulty lights for Thursday’s output.

“I tend to spin out a little bit when things like that happen, so I had to get my head screwed on straight,” Pope said. “B.A.S.S. really worked with us well, and they came up with some solutions to get out there fishing safely.”

As a hometown angler, Pope said he has what he thinks is a good spot to fish Friday. But where he goes tomorrow, of course, will depend on which boater he draws.

“If I have any input at all, I’m going to suggest we switch rivers,” he said. “We fished the Pee Dee, the Little Pee Dee and the Wakkamaw today. We were searching all over today. It was tough.”

Delaware’s Myers is second in the nonboater division. Virginia’s Travis Lugar is sitting in third with 11-14. Georgia’s Weston Wilkes is in fourth with 11-6, and Maryland’s Brandon Forsman is in fifth 11-0.

The top overall boater after Friday’s action will win $6,000 and the winning nonboater will earn $3,000. The leading boater and nonboater from each state also will advance to the B.A.S.S. Nation Championship, which will be held later this year at a yet to be disclosed location.

Friday’s final launch of the B.A.S.S. Nation Eastern Regional will begin Friday at 6 a.m. ET at Carroll Ashmore Campbell Marine Complex in Georgetown. Weigh-in, which can be watched on Bassmaster.com, will begin at 2 p.m.

Georgetown Country is hosting the event.

LA CROSSE, Wis. — Nonstop soaking rain, increasing river levels and heavy limits of big smallmouth and largemouth bass were of hot discussion after Thursday’s opening round of competition at the 2018 Bassmaster Elite at Mississippi River presented by Go RVing.

Thirty-four-year-old pro Chad Pipkens of Lansing, Mich., took control of the top spot after an impressive five-bass limit that weighed 17 pounds, 15 ounces.

The derby pays $100,000 to the top-scoring angler, and the dandy 5-8 largemouth has Pipkens also in charge of the Phoenix Boats Big Bass award. That fish could earn him an extra $1,500 once the event wraps up.

“It rained all day long,” he said. “And with the rising river levels, I was very pleased with what I caught today. I had a pretty difficult practice, and I really wasn’t sure what to expect. But I learned a lot today. The big question is how will the water levels affect the bite each day.”

The Upper Mississippi is expected to be at 12 foot high by Sunday. Twelve feet is considered flood stage, which will certainly change the fishing from day to day.

The spot Pipkens was fishing proved to hold the right size of fish to help him take the lead, but he learned more about it as the day went on.

“I only caught seven bass today,” he said. “I had what I weighed by about 1 p.m., and that allowed me to run around and learn more about the overall area. I think the fishing will stay pretty good, even with more water coming in.”

Like every other angler, how the increasing river levels will impact the bite is a pretty big mystery.

“I really don’t have any idea what to expect. The key to catching a good limit each day here will come down to the anglers who adapt the quickest and make the best decisions,” Pipkens said. “Today went great, and my goal is to go out tomorrow and do the same thing again.”

In a tie for second place, Cliff Pace of Petal, Miss., and Jacob Powroznik of North Prince George, Va., each weighed a five-bass limit of 16-14.

“I got real fortunate today and caught three good ones,” Pace said. “Each of those bass weighed about 3 3/4 pounds, which on this fishery are very solid bass. If I can catch a few like that each day, I’ll feel very confident about finishing real strong, maybe even winning.”

Pace weighed a mixed bag of both small- and largemouth bass, which is very typical on this fishery. As most anglers do, Pace kept his cards pretty close to the vest, not willing to reveal much about the techniques he was using to catch his fish.

Powroznik agrees that how the river will fish in coming days is largely unknown.

“I fished only one area today that is pretty expansive, and I believe it will hold up for a few more days,” he said. “I feel confident about what I have going on, but with the unknowns in how the rising river will impact the bite, I’m staying cautiously optimistic. The right fish are there, I know that much.”

Rounding out the Top 5 are Dave Lefebre with 16-9, and Casey Ashley and Gerald Spohrer tied for fifth with 16-7.

Take off will occur at Veterans Freedom Park at 6 a.m. CT, and weigh-in will begin at 3 p.m. at the same location again on Friday. The weigh-in will move for Saturday and Sunday to Valley View Mall on Clinton Street in La Crosse.

OVERVIEW- There has been lots of boating activity on the lake the past several weekends! Largemouth bass fishing has been good at night this past month! Water temperature will be in the upper 70’s to low 80’s. Best times will be early morning, late afternoon and at night. July is usually a good month to fish for stripers.

Largemouth Bass- Fishing for largemouth bass will be good this month. Best lures will be large plastic worms, jigs, drop shots, crank baits, top water lures, Carolina rigs and shaky heads. Points, brush piles, rocky areas, ledges and deep docks will be the best areas to try your luck. Best depths will be from surface to 25 feet deep. Remember to take care of the bass and release them! Fishing will be good at night if the shad are up in the middle of the night. Best lures at night are wake baits, crank baits, large plastic baits and heavy jigs.

Smallmouth Bass- Fishing will be fair. Best areas will be humps, ledges and rocky areas. Best lures will be tubes, jigs, top water lures, hair jigs and medium diving crank baits. Best areas will be in the mid to the lower sections of the lake. Cloudy days with wind and at night are good times to try your luck! Look for areas with rocks, stumps and ledges next to deep water. They feed heavily on crawfish around the full moon. Smallmouth will be hard this month.

Striped Bass- Fishing will be good this month. Stripers will be caught in the mid sections of the lake and the lower sections towards the dam and in the large creeks. Best lures will be swim baits, buck tails and Zoom flukes fished on 1/2 to 3/4 oz. lead heads. Best time to fish is cloudy days, early morning, night time (when the shad are shallow) and late afternoon. The best depths will be from the surface to 60 feet deep. Live bait fished on down lines and planner boards work this month. They will constantly be on the move. Find the largest concentration of shad. Night fishing will be fair this month. Lures like Red Fins, Thunder Sticks and large Rapalas work when the shad come to the shoreline at night.

Crappie- Fishing for crappie will be poor this month. The best depths will be 10 to 20 ft. deep. Crappie will be found around deep docks, brush piles, and fallen trees. Docks with brush piles are usually good areas to hold crappie. Small live minnows and 1½ to 2 inch tubes or shad shaped plastic lures fished on 1/16 to 1/8 oz. lead heads will work best to catch crappie this month. Best areas are the main creeks and the upper section of the lake.

TIP OF THE Month- Always wear your life jacket. Most bass will be caught at night. Try to find the areas with the largest concentration of bait fish. Ripping Lures For Postspawn Bass

Targeting postspawn bass comes into play at different times throughout the country but it’s usually when water temps reach 70+ degrees. At this point, Bass have just spawned and you presume the rigors of spawning have worn down the fish. So you tie on a finesse lure and slowly work it in areas near spawning banks.

After you’ve crawled the lure for a while, you decide to reel it in quickly and throw to the next target. But as you crank in the lure at high speed, a bass smashes your bait.

This is a common occurrence during the postspawn because bass still have enough reserve energy to chase their prey. Here are three ripping techniques that simulate fleeing bait to try for postspawn bass.

Stickbait and Spinnerbait ripping

Ripping a spinnerbait or stickbait is effective for suspending postspawn bass in clear water. Rip both of these lures in deep-water areas close to spawning banks.

On windy days rip a 3/8-ounce spinnerbait by waking the lure along the surface and jerking the rod hard similar to a hook-setting motion. Keep the lure moving during the entire retrieve.

When fishing calm weather and a slick surface switch to ripping a stickbait. Jerk the rod hard to make the lure dive 2 to 5 feet and throw in a small twitch every other time you jerk the rod to trigger a strike.

Jigging Spoon Double Rip

This tactic works best when postspawn bass start chasing shad through standing timber on main or secondary points.

Select a 3/4-ounce jigging spoon and make a long cast. After letting the lure drop to bass suspended 15 to 20 feet deep, start retrieving the spoon in a twitching fashion similar to working a Zara Spook. After four or five twitches, quickly raise your rod and jerk hard twice as if you are setting the hook. The hookset motion causes the spoon to lunge forward about 2 to 3 feet in an erratic action. After reeling in slack line, allow the spoon to fall again to trigger a strike.

Sweep The Jig For Postspawn Bass

Pitch a 3/8-ounce jig and a plastic chunk to the shallows of gravel or chunk rock banks. Pull the lure away from the bank for 4 or 5 feet with a sweeping motion of your rod to imitate a crawfish darting out of the shallows.

Next, let the jig fall back to the bottom and keep your line tight in preparation for a strike. After the lure settles to the bottom, pump the lure twice to tempt bottom-hugging bass.

What a great day for the 78 teams fishing for the $10,000 1st place prize money in the 2018 PBC Academy Sports & Outdoors $10,000 Spring Team Bass Trail Championship at Falls Lake! Morning air temp was around 69 degrees thenwarmed up to 88 in the pm. Water temps averaged about 86 degrees. Winds were light all day! The lake level was right at 252 and water clarity was good. Bass were shallow in the morning and then moved out to around 6 to 12′ when the suncame up. After everyone was weighed in the polygraph was given. Then all the anglers were treated to hot dogs, chips and drinks! Then we gave away over $7,000 in door prizes thanks to our great sponsors!!! Then awarded the prizemoney & trophies! PBC had a great year and thanks to all that supported this great trail.

Dan Glosson & Scottie Morris topped the field weighing in 5 bass at 25.77 lbs. winning 1st Place and 1st Place TWT to

take home a whopping $11,925 in prize money. The team found the fish early in 2′ to 4′ of grassy water using worm rigs

and later on crankbaits. They had 5 solid fish!

Sam & Matthew Jones took 2nd Place with 5 fish weighing 25.70 lbs. and won the 1st Place Big Fish (7.88 lbs.) to takehome $2,421 in winnings. The 3rd Place Team of Stephen Lasher & Chad Fara weighed in 5 at 22.54 lbs. and also won
the 2nd Place TWT to pocket $1,644. 2nd Place Big Fish was won by the 16th Place Team of Stewart Adams & ScottDunn (7.84 lbs.) netting them $583 in prize money!!

The 2018 PBC Academy Sports & Outdoors $10,000 Spring Team Bass Trail Points Champions belonged to the team of

Jaime Fajardo & Josh Hooks. They took home $1,000 for that and also won 6th Place in the Championship for $490!!

257 fish were weighed in for a total of 800 pounds for an average of 3.11 lbs. each, a good average for Falls Lake evenwith a cold front that had moved in a few days before! Most of the fish were caught on Carolina & Texas worm rigs and crankbaits in anywhere from 2 to 12 feet of water. Warm weather is here so lookfor a morning shallow bite and then godeeper when the sun comes up! Don’t believe the naysayers…Falls Lake is doing just fine.

Florida’s Dave Turner took the lead on the first day of the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Eastern Regional presented by Magellan Outdoors held on Winyah Bay out of Georgetown, S.C. Turner brought 14 pounds, 4 ounces to the scales at Wednesday’s weigh-in.

Florida Angler Grabs Early Lead In B.A.S.S. Nation Eastern Regional Bass Tournament At Winyah Bay

GEORGETOWN, S.C. — Dave Turner only caught seven bass in Winyah Bay on the first day of the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Eastern Regional presented by Magellan Outdoors, but five of those fish were the right ones.

Turner, who hails from Crystal River, Fla., bagged a five-bass limit today weighing 14 pounds, 4 ounces. That gave him nearly a 2 1/2-pound cushion over Maine’s George Cooper, who is second with 11-14.

In all, 346 anglers (173 boaters and an equal number of nonboaters) from 17 different states in the eastern portion of the United States are competing, as is a team representing the Canadian province of Ontario. At stake are cash, prizes and a shot at qualifying for the 2018 Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Championship presented by Magellan Outdoors and possibly the 2019 Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods.

Turner said he covered a lot of territory today, fishing a style he mastered by fishing tournaments in his home state.

“I was ‘junk fishing’ Florida-style,” Turner said. “I was burning up the trolling motor and covering a lot of water. I was trying to make as many presentations as I could make. I know I’ve got to get my bait in front of as many fish as I can.”

Turner caught two keepers early before the temperature in coastal Carolina climbed to 99 degrees by midday. The Florida pro shrugged off the heat, though, and got his other three keepers after 1 p.m. His heaviest bass weighed 4-6 (5 ounces shy of Cooper’s Big Bass of 4-11), but he’s not sure he can repeat the feat Thursday.

“It’s going to be touch-and-go,” Turner said. “I thought the fish were going to bite better than they did today. I don’t know if it was the tide or the heat, but something was different. It was difficult.”

Turner’s showing has Florida in second place in the team standings with 57 bass caught for 92-6. North Carolina leads after Day 1 with 60 fish weighing 93-7. Delaware is in third with 89-13, South Carolina is fourth with 87-13 and Pennsylvania is fifth with 84-2.

The team champion, which will be determined by the two-day weight of 10 boaters and 10 nonboaters from each state, will be crowned Thursday. The Top 34 anglers in the money line, as well as any of the Top 3 boaters and Top 3 nonboaters from each state not within the money line, will compete for individual honors on Friday.

North Carolina’s Norman Mullinax is third in the boater division with 11-3, Ontario’s Cooper Gallant is fourth with 11-1 and David Boyd of Team Florida is fifth with 10-12. West Virginia’s Tyler Webb is the only other boater who caught a double-digit limit today; his weighed 10-11.

Underscoring the difficult conditions on Wednesday, only 62 of 173 anglers in the boater division caught limits.

In the nonboater division, South Carolina’s Gary Pope leads with a limit of three bass that totaled 10-4.

“I’m probably the only guy with the real home-water advantage,” Pope said. “I live right here in Georgetown.”

Reid Mcdowell, who lives in Conway, S.C., about 40 miles from Georgetown, might have something to say about that, however. Mcdowell is in second place in the nonboater division with a 7-11 total on Wednesday.

Jimmy Myers of Delaware is in third with 6-14 and Phil Coffin of Pennsylvania is fourth with 6-13. Brandon Forsman of Maryland also caught 6-13 on Day 1, but only had two bass, which dropped him into fifth place among nonboaters.

Jared Whewell of Team Connecticut caught a 4-7 bass, which was the heaviest of the day among nonboaters.

The championship team will win a Triton 189 TrX boat powered by a Mercury 150 Pro XS engine. Then on Friday, the top overall boater will win $6,000 and the winning nonboater will earn $3,000. The leading boater and nonboater after Friday’s competition also will advance to the B.A.S.S. Nation Championship to be held later this year at a location to be announced later.

Takeoff Thursday for the B.A.S.S. Nation Eastern Regional will begin at 6 a.m. ET at Carroll Ashmore Campbell Marine Complex in Georgetown. Weigh-in, which can be watched on Bassmaster.com, will begin at 2 p.m.
