Bomb Shot and More From Missile Baits

[print_link]

Salem, Va. – June 15, 2018 – Missile Baits is dropping the Bomb Shot on the drop shot bait market! With the addition of a hot new drop shot bait, Missile is also introducing new colors in the D Bomb, Baby D Stroyer, and D Stroyer. Missile Jigs is introducing a new jig that will be fully released at the ICAST show in July. The new, innovative baits just keep coming from Missile.

Company owner and pro angler, John Crews, said, “We have some very exciting baits hitting the market very soon. The Bomb Shot is just sick. It has great action and I’ve already blasted them on it. The new colors are straight fire and the Missile Jig we have coming is going to start a new jig category. I am pumped about what we have coming!”

The Bomb Shot is a 4” bait that is based on the super popular D Bomb shape with a ribbed body and a thin beaver shaped tail. The solid head makes for rigging options of nose hooking or Texas rigging. Once in the water, the Bomb Shot will not stop shimmying or quivering. The Bomb Shot will be available in 10 different colors including 3 new ones to the Missile Baits brand. The Bomb Shot baits will come in a 15 pack and have a suggested retail price of $3.99. Bomb Shots will start shipping before ICAST in July.

New colors in the D Bomb, and Baby D Stroyer are also being released. The D Bomb is coming out in Super Craw and PB&J. Super Craw is a triple laminate of brown, green pumpkin, and orange and will be available in the Bomb Shot. The The Baby D Stroyer and D Stroyer will see the addition of Candy Bomb, which is a triple laminate of green pumpkin candy, chartreuse, and watermelon candy.
Missile Jigs is going to release a new jig to the market that will stay quiet until the week of ICAST in July. The new jig will create a new category of jigs. In testing, it has been an amazing fish catching machine. It will be deadly on largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass. Be sure to stay tuned for more info on the new jig!

Patrick Walters Saves Gas And Wins A Boat In Bassmaster Open On The Red River

BOSSIER CITY, La. — While many anglers leave the launch site and drive as far as time and gasoline allow to reach areas where other fishermen aren’t “pressuring” schools of fish.

Instead, Patrick Walters of Ladson, S.C., did just the opposite. The recent graduate of the University of South Carolina stayed close to the takeoff area in Pool 5 of the Red River and patiently put together the winning catch of bass in the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open on the Red River today.

Walters intentionally fished near the launch site for two reasons. By avoiding long runs and lost time in navigating locks into Pool 4 or Pool 3 on the Red meant the maximum amount of fishing time, which was important under the extremely tough conditions that confronted the Opens anglers. The other reason was his confidence that bass were more plentiful around the launch area than anywhere else in the fishery.

The strategy paid off. Walters won the tournament with a three-day weight of 30 pounds, 15 ounces. Drew Cook of Midway, Fla., was second with 28-10. He was followed by Marvin Ettredge of Shreveport, La., with 26-1. Kenta Kimura of Osaka, Japan, who led the first two days of the tournament, was fourth with 25-4. And Toby Hartsell of Afton, Okla., was fifth with 25 pounds.

“Optimizing time was my goal of the week,” explained Walters. “Staying in one area allowed me to fish a full eight hours, instead of wasting time gambling, looking for new water.”

Confidence in his area was another factor. Just two weeks prior, Walters competed in the FLW College Championship on these same waters. That gave him insight on the tough fishing conditions ahead, and it showed him the potential of his chosen fishing area.

“All of the fish were released inside Pool 5 and did not have time to disperse back into the river,” he explained.

The area within the launch site is best described as a small lake connected to the main river channel. Walters and many other anglers, including other top finishers, spent considerable time in the area.

During practice Walters eliminated unproductive water to confirm his strategy. Scouting trips into Pool 4 and north to Shreveport were unproductive.

Walters started the tournament on Thursday in 23rd place with a limit weighing 8-9. He was undeterred, realizing the first day his area would receive heavy pressure from other anglers. The pressure lessened the next day as the newness wore off the area. Fewer anglers meant more water for those choosing to stay in the vicinity.

On Friday he moved into second place with an overall total of 20-4. Kimura shared that area with Walters, who sealed the win on Saturday with a limit weighing 10-11.

Lure choices were made to also maximize the potential of catching fish in the used water. He used soft plastics for a methodical presentation when the bite was slow, and occasionally switched to crankbaits when he wanted to cover broad areas of water.

A Rapala DT 6 Series and a square bill crankbait were the choices. Walters also used a 5-inch Yamamoto Thin Senko with 3/0 Gamakatsu EWG Hook. He rigged it weightless or with a 1/8-ounce weight.

“On the first day it took a very slow approach, dragging the weightless Senko around wood,” he said. “The next day I switched to the crankbaits to cover more water.”

The reaction bite with the crankbait was necessary as bass were fewer and harder to catch. For the final day he rotated between the crankbaits to expand his coverage area.

Cook dialed into largemouth in a backwater area that resembled the familiar conditions of lakes in his home state of Florida. Inside a backwater, he found mixed vegetation, including lily pads, used by the bass as concealment for ambushing baitfish. Key to the area was a deep channel, providing cooler and clearer water than the surrounding area.

On Saturday the surface erupted with bass feeding upon shad, prompting him to make a key color change to his swim jig.

“They were feeding on shad and all it took was matching the bait color to the forage,” he said.

The bait of choice was a 3/8-ounce Nichols Saber Swim Jig. For a trailer he added a Big Bite Baits Dean Rojas Fighting Frog.

Walters’ winnings included cash and a Skeeter ZX200 with Yamaha VF200LA and custom trailer. A Minn Kota Fortrex, Lowrance Elite Ti 7 and other factory accessories were included. He also advances to the 2018 Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Opens Championship, Oct. 18-20, at Table Rock Lake in Missouri.

Noel Allen Jr. of Brandon, Miss., won the co-angler division with a total weight of 15-6. Allen fished with pros Keith Poche, Drew Cook and Matt Loetscher.

“It took a lot of baits to win, but I expected that to be the case due to the tough fishing,” he said. “Adapting to how my pros fished was a must.”

He used a bladed jig, crankbait, topwater frog and spinnerbait to win the co-angler trophy.

Allen also won a Triton 179 TrX powered by a Mercury 115 ELPT, a trailer and standard factory accessories.

Bruce Whitmire of Channelview, Texas, earned the Phoenix Boats Big Bass Award of $750 in the pro division by catching a largemouth weighing 5-11 on Friday. On Thursday, John Roberson of Shreveport, La., caught a largemouth weighing 4-12 to win the Phoenix Boats Big Bass Award worth $250 in the co-angler division.

Keith Poche earned the Power-Pole Captain’s Cash Award of $500 on the pro side for being the highest-placing angler who is registered and eligible and uses client-approved product on his boat.

The final Central Open is Sept. 6-8 at Pell City, Ala., on Logan Martin Lake. The 2018 Opens season features four events apiece in the Central and Eastern Divisions.

The eight winners from each tournament will compete in the championship. Joining them will be the Top 10 anglers in the point standings from each division. The 28 anglers will vie for berths in the 2019 Bassmaster Elite Series and GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods.

Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission, Red River Waterway Commission and the Horseshoe Casino hosted the event.

Finding Bass: Locating Fish With and Without Electronics – MTB

Finding Bass: Locating Fish With and Without Electronics[print_link]

Finding bass after the spawn is a popular technique for anyone looking to catch a pile of fish.  After the spawn, bass across much of the country will start their annual migration offshore. The warming shallow waters cause baitfish to head offshore, and the bass follow.

Finding and catching deep bass isn’t always easy, but it’s often some of the most rewarding fishing of the year because once you do find them, it can be lights out.

Obviously, finding and catching deep bass is a little easier with the space age electronics found on many bass boats, but it’s not the only way. You can still effectively target and catch offshore bass even if you’re in a boat with no electronics.

Here’s a breakdown on how to do it each way.

Finding Bass With Electronics

With today’s electronics, the learning curve for catching deep bass is a lot shallower than it used to be. The first step is to pull up your map and locate likely areas. Top producing offshore locations to find deep bass include; humps, points, ledges, saddles, and bluff walls. Once you’ve identified several on the map, go out and idle them with side imaging, and conventional sonar while looking for both cover, and bass.

Typically, you won’t want to fish until you at least see something that stands out from the rest. It may be an abundance of cover, like brush or rocks. Even better, you may actually be able to see the bass on your graph, indicating that it’s a good place to fish. Once you’ve located the bass, back off and fish them with your favorite deep technique.

Finding-Bass-Deep

Finding Bass Without Electronics

Interestingly, the approach without electronics is very much the same; you’re just doing it with a little less precision. It’s possible to still get paper maps of most of the major water-bodies in the country. If you can, make sure you get one. Spend some time identifying likely spots (humps, points, ledges, roadbeds, etc.) and mark them up on the map. Once you’re on the water, start at one end of the lake and fish each and every spot you marked until you bump into some fish.

Without electronics to tell you whether bass are present or not, it’s important to maintain efficiency. Employ a two-pronged approach by which you start out with a power-fishing technique like a crankbait, and thoroughly saturate the area. If you don’t get bit within 10 minutes, make a few casts through with a bottom bait like a football jig or worm to ensure there are no stragglers – and if you’re still hauling water then pick up and move on.

Head Up Rivers For Summertime Reservoir Bass MTB

Head Up Rivers For Summertime Reservoir Bass

[print_link]

When your favorite lake turns into a hot tub full of personal watercraft and recreational boaters this summer, it’s time to head for narrower and cooler waters. Heading up river to is a great way to target summertime reservoir bass.

Taking a float trip on a stream is one way to experience excellent fishing in the heat of summer, but if you prefer to fish impoundments there it still a viable alternative. Rather than fight the boat traffic and fish deep for sluggish bass, you can run up the tributaries of your favorite reservoir and find active bass in shallow cover. Typically in reservoirs water tends to stratify and you get a thermocline that starts to build up, but this never occurs in the river because there is always moving water to some degree.
Here are some tips on how to catch summertime bass from reservoir tributaries.

summertime reservoir bass fishing

Go With The Flow

While fishing upriver for summertime reservoir bass focus on eddies near steeper banks in the tributaries when there’s some water flow either from power generation or after a heavy rain. In both situations the flow generates more oxygen in the water and seems to turn on the fish. The shad are more active there, which in turn makes the bass more active.
Mud flats in tributaries keep the water off-color throughout the summer. If the area gets rain that produces some current, the fishing can change because the water will get dirtier then.

Depending on the type of structure, bass will be holding anywhere from 6 inches to 8 feet deep in the tributary. If the water is clear and you are fishing a ledge, bass will be at the bottom of the ledge. However if the water is dirty, bass will stay on top of the ledge. If you are fishing a drop-off, bass stay towards the surface in dirty water, but in clear water the fish tend to hold closer to the bottom. Some bass can caught in feeder creeks of the tributaries, but the main channel banks of the tributaries usually attract more shad and active bass.
For aggressive bass, burn a crankbait or spinnerbait around any cover in the upper reaches of the tributary. When bass are inactive, key on the lower end of the tributary and pitch a jig along channel swing points where bass tend to stay along the rocky bottom of the channel and feed on crawfish.
Go to the extreme

Run up as far as your boat can go on a tributary to get away from other anglers to find the biggest summertime reservoir bass.
Before heading too far up river though, make a stop at the last riffle heading into the lake. There is usually a hole right below where you run into current that puts a lot of oxygen in the water and activates bass. After hitting this spot, navigate up the river as far as your boat can go and fish the main river banks.

Bass in the river usually stay 2 to 3 feet deep and hold on rocks, stumps, logs or anything else that breaks the current. Sometimes bass will just key on the still water such as a small eddy in this riverine section. Productive lures to throw in the rivers include square-bill crankbaits, jigs, spinnerbaits and plastic grubs. A plastic worm bounced downstream with the current is a natural-looking presentation that also produces well in the summertime. Since river fish tend to face upstream waiting for the current to sweep a meal into their strike zone, you should retrieve your lure with a more natural presentation by casting upstream and reeling it in as it flows down with the current.

Targeting Timber For Summertime Reservoir Bass

On reservoirs loaded with flooded timber, summertime bass in the tributaries position around big standing timber or laydowns right off the creek channel swings where it cuts into or breaks away from the bank when water is running. The best areas are where a channel ledge drops off from 4 feet to 15 feet of water. Concentrate on the outside edges of the channel swing, but make sure you spend a little time fishing the inside edge of a swing that has a wide “S” turn.

These channel swing bass can be taken on fast-moving lures such as spinnerbaits and square-bill crankbaits or by flipping a jig. In either case, work quickly down the bank and cover a lot of water. If water flow is minimal, burn a square-bill crankbait through the timber to trigger a reaction strike and cover more water than you can with a slow-moving plastic worm.
If you catch a quality bass on the crankbait, then turn around and work the spot with a jig or worm because bass tend to bunch up in areas on the river. A Zara Spook or a magnum-size plastic worm also work better around the channel edges, especially where the river widens out in to a flat with standing hardwoods.

Kenta Kimura Holds Onto Lead In Bassmaster Open At The Red River

Kenta Kimura Holds Onto Lead In Bassmaster Open At The Red River

[print_link]

BOSSIER CITY, La. — Japanese angler Kenta Kimura has two solid reasons to be excited about bass fishing competition on Saturday in the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open.

First and foremost, he holds the lead after two competition days on the Red River. Today, Kimura caught four bass weighing 7 pounds, 14 ounces, for a total weight of 21-2. The pro angler from Osaka was one fish shy of a five-bass limit.

The second reason to be optimistic is that Kimura will have fewer competitors working the same spots he did during the first two rounds. He will no longer have to share the area with other anglers because the field is being cut to the Top 12 pros during the championship round.

“Having only 11 other boats on the water will be very big for me,” he said. “There were a lot of boats fishing in my area, too many to make it good for just one angler.”

Patrick Walters of Ladson, S.C., faired much better, moving from 23rd place into the runner-up spot with a limit weighing 11-11 and an overall total of 20-4.  Sam George of Athens, Ala., climbed from 20th to third with 19-15. Gary Clouse of La Vergne, Tenn., is fourth with 19-4, and Marvin Ettredge of Shreveport, La., is fifth with 19-3.

Noel Allen Jr. of Brandon, Miss., leads the co-angler division with 12-14. Brandon Sanchez of Livingston, La., holds down second with 11-6, and Keith Glasby of Ovillia, Texas, is third with 9-1.

Kimura admittedly dislikes the slow pace required for finesse fishing, but the tactic is paying off. One lure is doing the job, although declined to disclose the details.

“I am fishing in a backwater area and it is the only way to get bites,” he explained.

Kimura also hopes fewer boats lets him expand his strategy to other techniques, including fishing faster and covering more shoreline cover in his best areas.

Walters is using a simple but effective strategy that moved him inside the Top 12.

“We have an eight-hour day, and I am focused on keeping a lure in the water instead of doing a lot of running around,” he said.

Numerous other anglers chose the running around option, and it has failed to pay off. Tournament waters are pools 5, 4 and 3 of the river. The boats launch in the lower end of Pool 5 and have the option of locking into the lower pools. The lengthy mileage and travel time between pools takes away from time better spent fishing.

Walters is using a wide selection of lures to cover as much shoreline as possible in his area of Pool 5.

George is another angler intentionally focused on areas near the launch site. After takeoff, his area initially received heavy fishing pressure. As boats disappeared and went elsewhere, including other pools, the fishing improved for him.

“My area got better later in the morning,” said George. “I’ve fished here enough to know how these fish react under pressure.”

Fewer boats, less pressure and better fishing are ideal scenarios for him.

Clouse credited prior knowledge of a backwater area and a change up in a textbook presentation as key to his success.

“Just when I thought I was fishing slow, it wasn’t slow enough,” said Clouse, the founder and president of Phoenix Boats in Winchester, Tenn. “I’m just using textbook tactics, but much slower than normal.”

The fishing is tough on the Red River this week, and evidence is on the scoreboard. On Thursday, the 146 pros only weighed 44 limits of five bass. On Friday 21 limits came across the scales.

The Opens feature the Central and Eastern divisions with four tournaments apiece. Only one Central Open remains on the schedule. It’s in September on Logan Martin Lake in Alabama.

The eight winners from the Opens tournaments advance to the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Open Championship, to be held Oct. 18-20 in Table Rock Lake in Missouri. The Top 10 anglers in point standings from each division also will advance to the championship. The 28 competitors will fish for invitations to the 2019 Bassmaster Elite Series and Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods.

The top pro angler after Saturday’s final round wins a Skeeter ZX200 with trailer and rigged with Yamaha VF200LA. A Minn Kota Fortrex, Lowrance Elite Ti 7 and other factory accessories are included.

The winning co-angler receives a Triton 179 TrX powered by a Mercury 115 ELPT, a trailer and standard factory accessories.

Takeoff time is 6 a.m. CT from Red River South Resort and Marina. The weigh-in begins at 3 p.m. Location is Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World located at the Louisiana Boardwalk in Bossier City.

Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission, Red River Waterway Commission and the Horseshoe Casino are hosting the event.

Bass Fishing Heating Up As Bassmaster Elite Series Descends On Mississippi River

Bass Fishing Heating Up As Bassmaster Elite Series Descends On Mississippi River

[print_link]

LA CROSSE, Wis. — Anglers who have fished the Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa portions of the Mississippi River will tell you that the so-called “postspawn funk” is a very real thing.

The bass in that section of the mighty waterway are voracious as they prepare for the spawn during late winter and early spring. Then they work tirelessly building and protecting their beds while the spawn is underway.

When it’s over, they need a moment to catch their breath — and they seem to have caught it just in time for the Bassmaster Elite at Mississippi River presented by Go RVing.

The tournament is scheduled for June 21-24, with takeoffs at 6 a.m. each day from Veterans Freedom Park. The weigh-ins the first two days will be held back at the park 3 p.m., and the Saturday and Sunday weigh-ins will be held at 3 p.m. at Valley View Mall.

With the late-spring doldrums over, the weights could be impressive.

“Fishing is becoming much more stable,” said Jeremiah Shaver, president of the Wisconsin B.A.S.S. Nation and a regular on the Mississippi River. “The past few weeks, they’ve definitely been in their postspawn funk that you often hear about. But now, we’re seeing more and more standard summer patterns emerging.”

The water level has been holding steady at 7 to 7 1/2 feet, and it’s expected to remain that way throughout the tournament. Shaver said that means an angler might be able to find a good, solid pattern during practice and rely on it for all four competition days.

Ott DeFoe, a four-time B.A.S.S. winner who won the last time the Elite Series visited the Mississippi River back in 2016, said numerous patterns could work well — and fans should expect to see both largemouth and smallmouth brought to the scales.

“When I won in 2016, I think I only weighed in one smallmouth out of the 20 bass I brought in,” said DeFoe, who also had a 15th-place finish in La Crosse in 2013 and a 27th-place showing there in 2012. “But Seth Feider finished in second place in 2016, and the majority of the fish he weighed in were smallmouth.

“I think both species are definitely going to play.”

DeFoe said it’s possible to catch a largemouth on one cast and a smallmouth on the next. But most of the time, he said, anglers on the river have to make a conscious choice on which species to target.

No matter which one they choose, he expects it to take 65 to 67 pounds to win the event — and he expects it to be won shallow.

“It’s a really good shallow-water fishery,” DeFoe said. “You don’t have to spend a lot of time fishing deep — and I like that.

“The largemouth are going to be a little more focused in the backwaters, while the smallmouth are typically main-river oriented.”

In 2016, DeFoe had a 6-pound, 1-ounce largemouth that earned Phoenix Boats Big Bass honors as the largest of the tournament. While that fish was a godsend for him on what was a tough Day 2, he said you don’t necessarily have to have a bass that large to win.

“There’s a good number of 3- and 4-pounders there, and there are always a few 5-pounders caught,” he said. “Those are the fish you really need. You can’t have a really bad day where you only catch 8 pounds or so and then hope to go out and make up for it by catching 25 pounds the next day.

“You have to be consistent. If the smallest fish you weigh in the whole week is 2 3/4 pounds, you’re going to be right up there.”

With constant current and two species of bass to fish for, DeFoe said he expects to see everything from light-line finesse tactics to heavy-braid power techniques. Shaver said two patterns are already shaping up.

“Smallies are getting caught out in current around the (wing dams) and sand drops,” he said. “The frog bite is really starting to ramp up for largemouth. We should see plenty of fish being caught in a variety of ways.”

Competitors are allowed to fish both sides of the river, as usual, but this time they won’t have to worry about differing restrictions on the practice of culling, or releasing a small bass in their creel and replacing it with a heavier one. In 2013 Elite Series angler Brandon Palaniuk had a commanding lead in an Elite event on the river when he inadvertently culled a bass while just inside Minnesota waters. His catch was disqualified, and Palaniuk fell from first to 77th.

“Minnesota changed their regulations regarding culling last year so that tournaments permitted in Minnesota or in Wisconsin now have the same rules on the pools of the Mississippi River that these two states share,” said B.A.S.S. Conservation Director Gene Gilliland. “This levels the playing field for our anglers and removes confusion and uncertainty. Thanks go to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources for recognizing the need to be responsive to their anglers and remove troublesome and unnecessary regulations.”

A field of 108 anglers will be vying for the $100,000 first-place prize and valuable points in the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year race.

After five of nine regular-season Elite events, Kansas angler Brent Chapman currently leads the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year race with 456 points, followed by Bradley Roy of Kentucky with 427 and Louisiana angler Greg Hackney with 422.

The Bassmaster Elite Series Outdoors Expo will be held in conjunction with the tournament. It will take place at Valley View Mall on Saturday and Sunday beginning at noon. The event will feature boat demo rides, an aquarium, free prizes and the latest fishing products on the market. The Rock-N-Ribs Festival will also be happening at Valley View Mall along with concerts, food and the bbq competition. All activities are free and open to the public. $125K UP FOR GRABS AT FLW TOUR SEASON FINALE ON LAKE ST. CLAIR PRESENTED BY MERCURY

$125K UP FOR GRABS AT FLW TOUR SEASON FINALE ON LAKE ST. CLAIR PRESENTED BY MERCURY

Smallmouth Bass Expected to Dominate as World’s Top Professional Anglers Compete in Internationally-Televised Event

[print_link]

DETROIT, Mich. (June 14, 2018) – The FLW Tour, the most competitive Tour in professional bass-fishing, returns to the water this month, June 28-July 1, for the FLW Tour at Lake St. Clair presented by Mercury. Hosted by the Detroit Sports Commission, Macomb County, the Huron-Clinton Metroparks Authority and the Sterling Heights Regional Chamber of Commerce, the tournament will feature 364 of the world’s best bass-fishing professionals and co-anglers casting for top awards of up to $125,000 cash in the pro division and up to $25,000 cash in the co-angler division.

The FLW Tour has visited Lake St. Clair and the Detroit River five times previously, with 2018 marking the sixth visit in the Tour’s 23-year history. When the Tour last visited Michigan in August of 2012, legendary pro Larry Nixon of Quitman, Arkansas, loaded his boat with giant Lake St. Clair smallmouth from a ¼-mile stretch on the south end of the lake near the Belle River. Nixon won the event, weighing 20 bass totaling 84 pounds, 11 ounce, fishing a variety of baits on a drop-shot rig while mixing in a swimbait.

Though the fishing was phenomenal then, only two pros brought a limit in excess of 23 pounds to the scale. Fans following the action in 2018 can expect to see even better than that this time around. Though the tournament launches out of St. Clair, anglers have a huge body of water to compete on. They can stay on St. Clair, fish up the St. Clair River almost to Lake Huron or run south into the Detroit River and Lake Erie. Because it’s early summer, the majority of the anglers are likely to concentrate their efforts in water a little shallower – 15 feet or less.

“The beautiful thing about Lake St. Clair is that it’s so vast, so massive, that we can really spread out and you can find your own school of fish for all four days and really blow the doors off of the event,” said local FLW Tour pro Scott Dobson of Clarkston, Michigan, who has six career wins on Lake St. Clair in the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League. “I anticipate that about 65-percent of the field will fish in St. Clair and the rest will fish in Lake Erie or the Detroit River.”

Dobson said that he predicts that the majority of bass will be in the tail end of the spawn, but he thinks there will still be some bass found on their spawning beds. Smallmouth bass are expected to dominate the weigh-in stage, but Dobson said that we will still see some quality largemouth.

“St. Clair is really a prolific largemouth fishery, but it kind of goes unnoticed,” Dobson said. “There are plenty of 4- and 5-pound largemouth here. I don’t necessarily think a guy can win with them, but there certainly could be some anglers that cash checks or maybe even make the top-10 cut by fishing for largemouth.

“That being said, I think about 80-percent of the fish weighed in will be smallmouth,” Dobson continued. “The key to winning this tournament will be the ability to adjust by the day – by the hour – and finding the quality of fish to sustain for four days. My prediction is that the winner will have right around 85 pounds.”

Anglers will take off at 6:30 a.m. EDT each morning from the Lake St. Clair Metropark, located at 31300 Metro Parkway, in Harrison Township. Thursday and Friday’s weigh-ins, June 28-29, will be held at the park beginning at 3:15 p.m. Saturday and Sunday’s weigh-ins, June 30-July 1, will also be held at the park, but will begin at 4 p.m.

Television coverage of the FLW Tour at Lake St. Clair presented by Mercury will premiere in high-definition (HD) on NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) Aug. 8 from Noon-1 p.m. EST. The Emmy-nominated “FLW” television show airs on NBCSN, the Pursuit Channel and the World Fishing Network and is broadcast to more than 564 million households worldwide.

Prior to the weigh-ins Saturday and Sunday, June 30-July 1, FLW will host a free Family Fishing Expo at the Lake St. Clair Metropark from noon to 4 p.m. each day. The Expo is a chance for fishing fans to meet their favorite anglers, enjoy interactive games, activities and giveaways provided by FLW sponsors, and learn more about the sport of fishing and other outdoor activities.

Also for youth, the FLW Foundation’s Unified Fishing Derby will be held at the Lake St. Clair Metropark on Saturday, June 30 from 9-11 a.m. The event is hosted by FLW Foundation pro Cody Kelley along with other FLW Tour anglers, and is free and open to anyone under the age of 18 and Special Olympics athletes. Rods and reels are available for use, but youth are encouraged to bring their own if they own one. The 1st and 2nd place anglers that catch the biggest fish will be recognized Saturday on the FLW Tour stage, just prior to the pros weighing in.

As part of the FLW Tour’s community outreach initiative, FLW Tour anglers will visit youth at STARBASE One, located at 27310 D St. Building 1051, in Harrison Charter Township, on Wednesday, June 27 from 9-11 a.m. to introduce the fifth- and sixth-grade students attending the camp to fishing and outdoor activities in their community. During the presentations the pro anglers will reinforce how science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) relate to outdoor activities as well as different careers within the outdoor industry.

In FLW Tour competition, pros and co-anglers are randomly paired each day, with pros supplying the boat, controlling boat movement and competing against other pros. Co-anglers fish from the back deck against other co-anglers. The full field of 364 anglers competes in the two-day opening round. Co-angler competition concludes following Friday’s weigh-in, while the top 30 pros based on their two-day accumulated weight advance to Saturday. Only the top 10 pros continue competition Sunday, with the winner determined by the heaviest accumulated weight from the four days of competition. The total purse for the FLW Tour at Lake St. Clair presented by Mercury is more than $930,000.

Throughout the season, anglers are also vying for valuable points in hopes of qualifying for the 2018 Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of professional bass fishing. The 2018 Forrest Wood Cup will be on Lake Ouachita in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Aug. 10-12 and is hosted by the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism and Visit Hot Springs.

Kimura Takes First-Round Lead In Bassmaster Open Tournament On The Red River

[print_link]

BOSSIER CITY, La. — Japanese angler Kenta Kimura has a good problem to have at the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open underway on the Red River.

Kimura leads the tournament with a five-bass limit weighing 13 pounds, 4 ounces. His challenge is finding more bass for the next two days of the competition.

“I think I caught all the bass in my area, early this morning,” said Kimura, of Osaka. “Tomorrow I will start all over again.”

Starting all over again is not a bad place to be, given the tough fishing conditions thus far. Some anglers came to the scales with only a single bass weighing in the ounces. Others were more fortunate.

Second-place angler Larry Puckett of Decatur, Texas, had 12-4, followed by Eric Gilchrist of Plaquemine, La., with 11-11. Craig Schuff, of Springtown, Texas, and fellow Texan Brad Whatley of Bivins, are sitting in fourth and fifth with 11-4.

Gilchrist’s catch included the biggest bass of the day, a 4-9 largemouth that will win the Phoenix Boats Big Bass Award if no one catches a heavier fish by tournament’s end on Saturday.

Hugh Rose of Davis, Okla., leads the co-angler division with a three-bass limit weighing 7-3. Cody Miller of Livingston, Texas, holds down second with 7 pounds, and Justin Estay of Larose, La., is third with 5-15.

The predicted tough fishing conditions became real on Thursday.

Kimura noted that his bite ended at 9 a.m., and he spent the remainder of the day in the hunt for new areas. He came up short but is in contention to qualify for the championship round on Saturday when the field is narrowed to the Top 12 anglers.

Competing are 146 pros from 16 states and Japan, along with their co-angler partners. The pros have tough decisions to make, including whether or not to make long boat runs to escape the crowds and fishing pressure.

Tournament waters are pools 5, 4 and 3 of the Red River. Competitors launch from the lower stretch of Pool 5, which is just south of Shreveport and Bossier City. From there to the end of Pool 3 is a round trip travel time of about 4 hours.

The nail-biter is the additional time required for passing through two locks, both ways, for even less fishing time. Even so, about 50 boats made the trip despite the limited fishing time.

Puckett chose to stay put and make the most of his time in a single area.

“I spent about 80 percent of the day in the same spot,” he said. “I feel good about the potential because I got up to 15 bites a day there during practice.”

Puckett admitted that fishing rocky shorelines played a key role in the success of his pattern.

Choosing to make the long run into Pool 3 was Whatley, who caught his first keeper of the day in Pool 5 while en route to the first of the two locks. The trip into Pool 3 produced only one keeper.

“I’m going to sleep on it tonight, but I doubt that I’ll make that run again,” he said. “The weights are too low to gamble on the lost time needed to be fishing instead of running.”

The Opens feature the Central and Eastern divisions with four tournaments apiece. Only one Central Open remains on the schedule, in September on Logan Martin Lake in Alabama.

The eight winners from the Opens tournaments advance to the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Opens Championship. So do the Top 10 anglers in point standings from each division. The 28 competitors will fish for invitations to the 2019 Bassmaster Elite Series and Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods. The championship is Oct. 18-20, on Table Rock Lake in Missouri.

On Saturday the top pro angler wins a Skeeter ZX200 with trailer and rigged with Yamaha VF200LA. A Minn Kota Fortrex, Lowrance Elite Ti 7 and other factory accessories are included.

The winning co-angler receives a Triton 179 TrX powered by a Mercury 115 ELPT, a trailer and standard factory accessories.

Takeoff time is 6 a.m. from Red River South Resort and Marina with weigh-in beginning at 2 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday the championship weigh-in begins at 3 p.m. Location is Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World located at the Louisiana Boardwalk in Bossier City.

Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission, Red River Waterway Commission and the Horseshoe Casino are hosting the event.

Destin, FL (June 14, 2018) – They’ve been referred to as “performance enhancing” and an “unfair advantage.” The fact nearly every wide receiver in the NFL and NCAA now uses gloves to protect their hands and grip pigskins should not go unnoticed by anglers. Apparently, it hasn’t been. Several seasons back, gloves designed for fishermen and women started showing up in grip-and-grin photos and live tournament coverage, everywhere. The reasons? Enhanced fishing performance and protection from outdoor elements.

Recognizing the glaring lack of premium fish-centric gloves early on, Fish Monkey began researching and designing a comprehensive lineup of situation specific hand-gear. Today, Fish Monkey offers the most complete—and continually expanding—array of exceptional angling gloves. Two of its most popular styles, the Stubby Guide Glove and the Pro 365 Guide Glove, now brandish Fish Monkey’s newest, statement-making patterns.

Voodoo Swamp Purple and Voodoo Swamp Green outfit anglers with virtual hand graffiti; both patterns scream ‘street cred’ of the aquatic kind. At the same time, progressive Fish Monkey materials safeguard your two most important fishing appendages.

Patterned to grant sensitivity and total freedom of movement in the wrists and fingers, the Stubby Guide Glove gives anglers the most natural fit on the water. The half-finger, shortened open-wrist guide glove provides a “second skin fit” with a non-slip silicone palm print for comfort, grip and support. Its quick-drying spandex back provides UPF 50+ sun protection to boot. Special “pullers” yield easy-on, easy-off without turning the glove inside out. Guides and pro anglers continually call out the following advantages: casting and sensitivity while fishing, tying knots, safe fish handling, poling the flats, and hand protection from cuts, sun and fatigue.

Tailored with slightly longer fingers and wrist, the Pro 365 Guide Glove is the most versatile fishing glove available, effective in all but the most extreme conditions. Built with the same “second skin fit”, UPF 50+ sun protection and quick-drying qualities as the Stubby, the Pro 365 Guide Glove adds a synthetic leather palm for a non-slip grip.

“I recently landed over 60 bass while wearing Fish Monkey Guide Gloves,” says Steve Pennaz, host of Lake Commandos TV. “What amazed me is that besides totally protecting my hands from sunburn, I noticed absolutely no signs of bass thumb—those annoying scrapes and punctures associated with lipping largemouth and smallmouth bass. I can’t say enough good things about Fish Monkey Guide Gloves and the importance of wearing them on every fishing outing. They’ve become standard equipment for me.”
