ORANGE, Texas — If the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Elite at Sabine River presented by Econo Lodge had been a five-day tournament, the outcome might have been different.

But it was only four days — and Greg Hackney owned it from start to finish.

Despite exhausting his best fishing areas the first three days and bringing in only 7 pounds, 5 ounces to the weigh-in stage on Championship Sunday, Hackney claimed his sixth career B.A.S.S. victory in wire-to-wire fashion with a four-day total of 48-5.

Hackney’s first win since 2016 earned him $100,000 and pushed his career winnings with B.A.S.S. to $2,415,784.

“If we’d had to fish another day, I probably would have hunted and gone to some new water,” Hackney said. “I really don’t think all of the fish were gone. But we had all of that rain Saturday, and my best place had a couple of drains running into it.

“The water wasn’t dirty, but the water temperature dropped to 80 degrees after being in the 90s the first three days.”

Hackney fished secluded canals and backwaters all week and relied heavily on two topwater presentations around shallow cover — a 1/4-ounce black Hack Attack Select ToadBuzz rigged with a black plastic toad (no skirt) and a KVD Sexy Frog Stump Jumper.

That drastic drop in the water temperature brought those tactics nearly to a halt today, and he had to switch to the technique he is most known for — flipping. When he flipped heavy cover, he used a Strike King Rage Bug in the Bama Craw color.

BASSTrakk, the unofficial leaderboard that fans can check on Bassmaster.com throughout the day, showed Hackney with only two fish several hours into the final round. But he said he always knew he could fill out his limit flipping — even if the fish he was catching with that technique were running much smaller than his topwater fish.

“I really was amped up a little bit today, and that’s why I got a lot quieter, said Hackney, laughing. “I always have a lot more to say when things are going right.

“But in the back of my mind, I knew I could pick up a flipping stick and catch a keeper anytime.”

His two best fish still came on the frog. But when he switched to flipping, he caught 10 keepers in 45 minutes.

“I probably should have done that sooner, but I just felt like I would have been punting,” he said. “Out of those 10 keepers I caught in the last 45 minutes flipping, they were all about 12 to 12 1/2 inches long.

“That’s why I won. When a lot of other guys were dialed into that this week, I was fishing for those bigger ones with the frog and the buzzbait.”

While some anglers ran as many as 300 miles a day roundtrip, Hackney fished close to the launch site at the City of Orange boat ramp. He said he only burned 11.6 gallons of gas all week.

Before the tournament, Hackney predicted it would take “48 pounds, about 12 pounds a day” to win. He’ll take home the giant blue Elite Series trophy after weighing in 48-5.

“I thought I had an opportunity to have a good tournament, but I didn’t know that I would have a shot to win,” he said. “I knew I was going to be around a lot of other guys, and it’s hard to win in a crowd.

“Catching that 5-14 on the first day got me off to a good start. Even if I hadn’t caught that fish — if I had just weighed in four that day — I would have still been leading going into today. But that fish helped me start just the way I needed to.”

Alabama pro Gerald Swindle finished second with 43-11, and Keith Poche, a Louisiana native who grew up fishing the Sabine River, placed third with 43-0.

Brent Chapman of Lake Quivira, Kan., the 2012 Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year, retained the lead in his quest for a second AOY title. Chapman, who finished 37th at the Sabine River event, has 456 points. Bradley Roy of Lancaster, Ky., is second with 427, and Hackney, who was Angler of the Year in 2014, moved into third with 422 points.

Poche earned the Power-Pole Captain’s Cash Award of $1,000 for being the highest-placing angler who is registered and eligible and uses a client-approved product on his boat.

Brock Mosley was awarded $1,500 dollars as the winner of the Phoenix Boats Big Bass award. He had the largest bass of the tournament with a 6 pound, 3 ounce lunker on Day 2.

John Crews won the Toyota Bonus Bucks Award of $3,000 for being the highest-placing eligible entrant in the program. The second-highest-placing eligible entrant, Brandon Palaniuk, received $2,000.

Allen Yarborough and Kyle Dorsett win 2018 Alabama Bass Trail at Logan Martin
by Dan O’Sullivan

[print_link]

June 9, 2018 – Cropwell, Ala. – Any time one ventures out in a summer tournament, the chances of a lake resembling an ocean are great.  With the fourth tournament on the 2018 Alabama Bass Trail’s Northern Division schedule being on Logan Martin, those chances became reality.

Logan Martin is one of the bodies of water that is known as a playground for Birmingham, and when warm summer conditions were on the forecast for tournament day, people came out to play in the water.  The heavy boating traffic and hot conditions made for less than ideal navigation for the 203 team field, and put the Coosa River’s resident largemouth and spotted into a slight funk.

However, as with every tournament, someone will figure out how to do enough to win, and despite the weights being lighter than anticipated, the team of Allen Yarborough and Kyle Dorsett produced a 16.68-pound limit, which earned them the day’s victory and the $10,000 first prize.

The pair, who has vast knowledge of the lake were a little surprised by the result.  “We really didn’t think we had enough to win,” they said.  “We knew it was tough, but never would have thought that less than 17 pounds would have won today; this is a great surprise.”

Yarborough and Dorsett said that they spent their day fishing from the Logan Martin Dam on the lower end of the lake and working their way back upstream to the mid lake area.  They concentrated on Flippin’ docks with a 3/8 “green and blue jigs with Zoom Chunk trailers and Zoom Trick Worms and NetBait TMac worms, while catching a few key fish off of brushpiles throughout the day as well.  “We had to really scale down because they didn’t pull as much current as we thought they would,” they said.  “We just did the best we could, trying to get bites, and we’re really happy with the way things turned out.”

The second place team of Michael Stevens Jr. and Paul Arnold find themselves in a familiar position having finished second the last time the Northern Division made a regular season stop at Logan Martin.  The pair from Fayetteville, Tenn. and Woodville, Ala. said they were satisfied with how they fished, but slightly frustrated to finish in the runner up position again. “We had a great day on the water, but it’s frustrating to come so close and fall short again,” they said.  “We caught 50 fish upriver in current eddies on a Spot Remover head and green pumpkin Trick Worm.  It was a fun day, and while we would rather have won, we’re grateful for the good finish with one more event left.”  The pair earned the $5,000 second place prize, along with the $250 ABT Gear bonus for wearing an item of Alabama Bass Trail Apparel during the event and weigh-in.

The team of Jim Marona and Cory Jones caught a 5.28-pound largemouth that anchored their 14.42-pound limit.  Their effort earned them sixth place for the day, as well as the $500 Mountain Dew Big Bass bonus for weighing in the largest fish of the event.

PARIS’ LAWRENCE LEADS WIRE-TO-WIRE, WINS COSTA FLW SERIES AT LAKE BARKLEY PRESENTED BY T-H MARINE

PARIS’ LAWRENCE LEADS WIRE-TO-WIRE, WINS COSTA FLW SERIES AT LAKE BARKLEY PRESENTED BY T-H MARINE

[print_link]

CADIZ, Ky. (June 9, 2018) – Boater Jake Lawrence of Paris, Tennessee, won the Costa FLW Series at Lake Barkley presented by T-H Marine Saturday after bringing a limit of bass weighing 19 pounds, 11 ounces to the scale. Lawrence’s three-day total of 15 bass weighing 72-4 gave him the win by a 7-pound, 5-ounce margin and earned him the top prize of $48,300.

Lawrence said that he knew most of the bass would be located offshore on the deeper ledges, where they would be easy to locate but challenging to catch. He also knew the early combination of heavy rain and high water coupled with the strong current would send some fish seeking shallower cover. That’s where he trained his efforts; specifically an area near the mouth of a small creek south of the Highway 79 bridge.

Lawrence was targeting fish in the 8-12 foot zone. He primarily threw a 10-inch V&M J-Mag Worm in red bug (either on a Neko Rig or a swing head), but he says he also caught fish on a Scrounger with a Castaic Jerky J, as well as a custom-made hair jig, a football jig and a spoon.

Most of Lawrence’s fish came each morning from the same area following a nearly 90-minute run from the Lake Barkley State Park launch site. The day one morning result was a fantastic 28-pound 15-ounce limit. He collected a 21-10 limit on day two. On day three he had a winning limit in the boat by 7:30 and caught his last fish around 11 o’clock.

“Conditions are changing,” he said. “This was about the last day of it. I’m glad it lasted as long as it did.”

The top 10 pros on Lake Barkley finished:

1st:          Jake Lawrence, Paris, Tenn., 15 bass, 72-4, $48,300

2nd:         Garrett Paquette, Canton, Mich., 15 bass, 64-15, $18,500

3rd:         Mike Roller, Purdy, Mo., 15 bass, 58-10, $13,500

4th:         Marcus Sykora, Osage Beach, Mo., 15 bass, 57-7, $11,600

5th:         Ramie Colson Jr., Cadiz, Ky., 15 bass, 55-9, $10,500

6th:         Andy Morgan, Dayton, Tenn., 15 bass, 55-8, $8,750

7th:         Brandon Hunter, Benton, Ky., 14 bass, 54-13, $7,600

Hackney Extends His Lead At The Bassmaster Elite Series Event On The Sabine River

Greg Hackney of Gonzales, La., maintains the lead on the third day of the 2018 Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Elite at Sabine River presented by Econo Lodge, with a three-day total weight of 41 pounds.

Hackney Extends His Lead At The Bassmaster Elite Series Event On The Sabine River

[print_link]

ORANGE, Texas — Before the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Elite at Sabine River presented by Econo Lodge, Greg Hackney had a total weight in mind that he thought an angler would need to win the $100,000 first-place prize.

After the first three rounds, he’s well within striking distance of that number — and if someone is going to pass him, they’ve got a lot of work to do.

Hackney caught five bass that weighed 12 pounds, 14 ounces during today’s semifinal round and maintained the lead for a third straight day with 41-0. Alabama angler Keith Poche is nearly 7 1/2 pounds back in second with 32-9.

“Coming into the tournament, I felt like it would take 48 pounds to win,” said Hackney, a Gonzales, La., angler with five B.A.S.S. victories and the 2014 Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year title on his resume. “I thought, if I could average 12 pounds a day, that would get it done.

“But you never know with this group. There are not a lot of big fish here, but there’s a few — and they can change things in a hurry.”

Hackney caught most of his fish from one area Thursday and Friday. But with the fishing fading in that spot, he went with a new game plan for most of the day today.

“I caught three of my fish from new water,” he said. “I went back to the place where I fished the first two days, but I ended up weighing only two of the bass that I caught from there.”

Hackney had the biggest bass of Thursday’s opening round with a 5-14 largemouth, and he landed two more that weighed over 3 pounds Friday. He managed another larger-than-average Sabine River bass today.

“I got real fortunate and caught a really good one at the end,” he said. “I culled a little-bitty one with a 3-pounder. That helps anywhere, but it really helps down here.

“Today, my other keepers were bigger than they were yesterday. I had four nice ones and then that 3-pounder was my biggest one.

Hackney’s plan for Championship Sunday is to continue fishing new areas of the Sabine River system and using baits and techniques that he believes other competitors are overlooking.

Though he won’t be specific about how he’s catching his fish until the derby ends, Hackney said he’s been switching baits often based on the terrain he’s fishing. A tactic that works at one end of a cove might not work at the other end.

Though he seems to have an insurmountable lead, he’s not making any assumptions. The areas he is fishing are getting worked over by other anglers as well, and the pressure has to be getting to the fish, he believes.

“I don’t have anything that hasn’t already been fished,” Hackney said. “If I did, I’d be fishing it. It’s not over by any stretch.”

Poche, a native of neighboring Louisiana, caught 9-3 today to move from third place into second with 32-9. He’s proved his ability to catch a big limit this week with a bag that weighed 15-10 Friday. Poche is followed closely by Japanese angler Shin Fukae, who is in third with 32-8.

“I’ve been starting in a spot close by the launch, and it produced for me today,” Poche said. “I was very thankful for that because when I ran to my place upriver, they were biting funny. I lost a couple of good fish up there that I think would have helped me out a lot.

“Between my morning spot and that place upriver, who knows what might happen?”

Brock Mosley of Collinsville, Miss., leads the race for the Phoenix Boats Big Bass award of $1,500 with a 6-3 bass he caught Friday. Gerald Swindle of Alabama had the biggest bass today, a 6-pound largemouth.

The tournament concludes Sunday with takeoff at 6:05 a.m. CT from the City of Orange Boat Ramp. The final weigh-in ceremonies will be held at the same venue at 3 p.m. Only the Top 12 remaining anglers will fish.

The Orange County River Festival, which features a wide variety of food vendors and the Kids Catch and Release Fish Tank, will open at 11 a.m. Sunday.

The Bassmaster Elite Series Outdoors Expo will be held in conjunction with the festival at the park on Saturday and Sunday. The event will feature boat demo rides, kids activities, free prizes and the latest fishing products on the market.

Hackney Holds Onto Lead At Bassmaster Elite Series Event On The Sabine River

ORANGE, Texas — After catching a big limit of bass in his first spot during Thursday’s opening round of the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Elite at Sabine River presented by Econo Lodge, Greg Hackney promptly left the area in hopes of saving it for later in the tournament.

He had hoped to repeat that process today, but things took a little longer.

Instead, Hackney, a five-time B.A.S.S. tournament winner from Gonzales, La., took all day to land a five-bass limit that weighed 11 pounds, 15 ounces and pushed his two-day weight to 28-2.

He’s still in first place. But now, there’s some maneuvering to be done.

“I probably caught 20 keepers in there today, but I had to burn through them to catch what I weighed in,” said Hackney, whose last B.A.S.S. victory came in 2016 on Lake Texoma on the Texas-Oklahoma border. “I think I could go back in there and catch another limit, maybe 6 pounds. But that’s not what I’m looking for.

“So, I’m going to move around a little bit tomorrow.”

Hackney said his keeper bass today were smaller on average than they were on Thursday, when his catch was anchored by a 5-14 largemouth. He had two bass Friday in the 3-pound range and three more that were about 1 1/2 pounds apiece.

With his best spot now exhausted, he’ll have to move to one of the other areas he found during practice. Though he knows those areas have probably been hit hard by other anglers the last two days, he believes his method will still work.

“I know they’ve been fished, but I’ve watched the guys around me and they’re not fishing like I am,” he said. “I watched guys really catch the little ones around me again today. But I went right behind them this evening and caught a 3-pounder.”

He said fishing in a crowd might actually be helping him make better decisions.

“Sometimes it’s good to fish around other people because I never really throw at anything those other guys are throwing at,” Hackney said. “I attack everything differently, and I was catching, on average, a lot better fish.”

While Hackney’s weight fell off from 16-3 on Day 1 to 11-15 on Day 2, things got better for Auburn, Ala., pro Steve Kennedy.

After catching just 7-5 during the opening round, Kennedy brought a tournament-best 16-5 to the scales today and jumped from 65th place into second with 23-10.

Strangely, he said it was a noise that clued him in to what he should be doing.

“I started hearing these noises that I can’t even really describe — just this grating noise,” Kennedy said. “It was blue crabs. There are a million blue crabs around where I’m fishing, and apparently the bass really like to eat them.

“I switched to a little bait that imitates a blue crab, and it was big for me.”

Kennedy said he always has some of the baits with him when B.A.S.S. visits a tidal fishery where crabs are prevalent. On Friday, there was one incident in particular that told him they were a wise choice.

“I flipped into a place on my first pitch, and when I set the hook I broke off with 25-pound-test fluorocarbon,” Kennedy said. “Then on my next pitch, I caught that fish. It weighed about a pound and a half, and it actually regurgitated that bait into my boat.

“The fact that he bit it twice told me I was using a bait they really want.”

While Kennedy is likely to be sticking with his crab-imitation baits Saturday, third-place angler Keith Poche (23-6) said he’ll be using a little bit of everything — if there’s actually water in the area he wants to fish.

“The area where I caught my fish couldn’t even be fished in practice because the water was so low,” said Poche, who lives in Pike Road, Ala. “Today, I just took a chance, and the water was really high. I may not be able to get in there tomorrow, but I think I’ve at least got to go try.”

Brock Mosley of Collinsville, Miss., took the lead for the $1,500 Phoenix Boats Big Bass award with a largemouth that weighed 6-3.

The tournament continues Saturday and Sunday with daily takeoffs at 6:05 a.m. CT from the City of Orange Boat Ramp and weigh-ins back at the ramp each day at 3 p.m. The Top 50 remaining anglers will fish Saturday with only the Top 12 advancing to Championship Sunday for a chance at the $100,000 first-place prize.

The Orange County River Festival, which features a wide variety of food vendors and the Kids Catch and Release Fish Tank, will open at 11 a.m. each day. Live music will begin Saturday at 5:30 p.m., and country music star John Michael Montgomery will play at 8.

The Bassmaster Elite Series Outdoors Expo will be held in conjunction with the festival at the park on Saturday and Sunday. The event will feature boat demo rides, kids activities, free prizes and the latest fishing products on the market.

Red River Set To Challenge Bassmaster Opens Anglers

Red River Set To Challenge Bassmaster Opens Anglers

BOSSIER CITY, La. — The third stop of the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Opens is anything but a tournament to determine who wins on the Red River. The river is fishing tough, and the high-stakes prizes up for grabs will be well earned.

The tournament on river pools 3, 4 and 5 is June 14-16, with the weigh-ins and launches in Bossier City.

Overall winners from the boater and co-angler divisions advance to the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Opens Championship at a site and dates to be announced later. Invitations for the pros to the 2019 Bassmaster Elite Series and the 2019 Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods will be determined this fall at the championship.

That makes qualifying for the Opens Championship the goal at the Red River. Joining the winners will be the Top 10 pros and co-anglers from the Central Division point standings, following the final event in September on Logan Martin Lake, Alabama. The Top 10 finishers in the Eastern Division, along with the winners of those four tournaments, also will qualify for the championship.

Currently ranking eighth among the pros is Derek Hudnall of Baton Rouge, La. Continuing the momentum of a third-place finish in April on the Arkansas River is the Louisiana angler’s plan.

“Fishing fast, running and gunning, covering as much water as possible,” he said. “It will take doing all of that to win the tournament.”

Hudnall’s previous successes on the river show the odds are low of an angler finding a solid fishing pattern in one area. Duplicating that success elsewhere on the river will be challenging too, due to the habitat loss and inconsistency of the fishing.

“Maintaining consistency in catches has always been a challenge here, and especially with the current state of the river,” he said.

In 2015 and the next year, historic flooding reshaped the river and the ecosystem, including bass and their habitats.

“The flood took out the vegetation and silted in many of the backwater areas,” explained Hudnall. “The river is fishing very different now, not unlike how it has for the past couple of years.

“The bass will adjust, it will take time, but until then it will be a grinder of a tournament,” continued Hudnall.

Striking the balance by deciding how much travel time to sacrifice over fishing will be another factor for the anglers to consider.

“The backwaters could produce a big bite, but that will consume time getting into and out of those areas,” he explained.

Hudnall predicted catching 12 pounds each day will put an angler in contention to win the tournament and gain much needed points for the championship.

“Following the usual spring high-water periods, the river is clearing up, and the level coming down,” said Hudnall.

Both factors could help concentrate more bass along the main river. Prime areas will be shallow, underwater ridges and flats bordering the river channel. Those areas with isolated brushpiles, logjams and rock will be even more ideal for attracting the bass. The shorelines surrounding islands on the main-river channel could be productive as well.

Hudnall said all the pools could be in play, although Pool 5 is traditionally a top producer during summertime tournaments.

“It’s the Red River, and there always are changes to deal with on river systems anyway,” said Hudnall. “Figuring out the movements and changes of the river are part of learning that type of water.”

Takeoff time is 6 a.m. CT from Red River South Marina with weigh-ins beginning at 2 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. The final weigh-in on Saturday, June 16, begins at 3 p.m. at Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World in Bossier City.

Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission, Red River Waterway Commission and the Horseshoe Casino will be hosting the event.

Early Big Bite Lifts Hackney Into Lead At Bassmaster Elite Series Event On The Sabine River

Early Big Bite Lifts Hackney Into Lead At Bassmaster Elite Series Event On The Sabine River

ORANGE, Texas — Greg Hackney came into this week’s Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Elite at Sabine River presented by Econo Lodge fully expecting the fishing to be tough.

He said he wouldn’t have been surprised if he had caught no more than 5 pounds, 14 ounces of bass during Thursday’s entire opening round.

So when he landed one fish that weighed 5-14 early Thursday morning, he knew he was on to something — and he built a five-bass limit around that fish that weighed 16-3 to give him the Day 1 lead in an event that pays $100,000 to the winner.

“When the fishing’s this tough, catching a fish like that is almost like catching a whole limit on one bite,” said Hackney, a Gonzales, La., angler who has won five events during his career with B.A.S.S. “If you can put four more with it — even four little ones — you’re probably going to be in pretty good shape.”

Despite suffocating heat and water temperatures that pushed into the low 90s in some places, Hackney said the conditions were actually good on the Sabine River during Thursday’s early-morning hours. That’s when he did the bulk of his good work.

But once the tide started out, the fishing got tougher — and anglers started moving around a lot. That, he said, made things much worse.

“I had one place where I was waiting for the water to come back, and I was expecting it to come back real clean,” Hackney said. “Typically, that’s what would happen. But with so many people moving around later in the day, it really muddied the water.

“When it came back, it came back dirty.”

As for the rest of the tournament, Hackney is sticking with his original mindset.

“It could be really good, or it could be really bad,” he said. “I’m prepared for it to be tough.”

Hackney’s 5-14 largemouth put him in the lead for the $1,500 Phoenix Boats Big Bass award, and his 16-3 limit helped to a sizeable lead of almost 4 pounds over Alabama angler Matt Herren.

Herren brought five bass to the scales that weighed 12-4 — and he agreed that scattered big bites will be the deciding factor in an event that will likely see a lot of smaller bass caught in the 12- to 14-inch range.

“I had a few quality bites in practice, and I got a couple today,” Herren said. “I don’t know if I’ll get them tomorrow. But that’s what you’ll have to have.”
Herren said boat traffic was not a huge problem for him Thursday.

“I had two or three other boats around me, but it’s a big area I’m fishing,” he said. “None of those other (anglers) were doing what I’m doing.”

After a tough practice, California angler Skeet Reese was thrilled with his third-place weight of 12-2 — and he thinks he might have picked up some knowledge that could help him the rest of the way.

“I thought if I had a great day, I might could catch 9 pounds,” he said. “So to catch 12 … I didn’t see that coming.

“I caught my last good fish of the day on a different bait than I had been catching them on, so I may have learned something.”

The tournament continues Friday through Sunday with daily takeoffs at 6:05 a.m. CT from the City of Orange Boat Ramp and weigh-ins back at the ramp each day at 3 p.m. The full field of 108 anglers will compete Friday, but only the Top 50 will advance to Saturday’s semifinal round.

The Orange County River Festival, held in conjunction with the Bassmaster Elite Series Outdoors Expo, features a wide variety of food vendors, free activities and the Kids Catch and Release Fish Tank, will open at 11 a.m. each day with live music beginning Friday and Saturday at 5:30 p.m. Country music star John Michael Montgomery, the Festival’s headlining act, will play at 8 p.m. Saturday.
