Chico State Takes Second-Round Lead In Bassmaster College Series Tournament

LAKEPORT, Calif. — Carson Leber and Tyler Bounds continued a hot streak on Clear Lake today, moving from fifth place into the lead at the Carhartt College Western Tour presented by Bass Pro Shops.

The team from Chico State University added 22 pounds, 1 ounce to a Wednesday catch of 17-1 for a total weight of 39-2. The Californians hold a slim lead over second place anglers Caleb Gibson and Tyler Winn of Northeastern State University, who led after Wednesday’s opening day. Today, the Oklahomans caught 16-4 for a two-day total of 38-3. Nick Klein and Mike Klemm, also of Chico State, rank third with 36-10. Joey Price and Bobby Fralix of Clemson University are fourth with 35-14. Levi Wittrock and Gunnar Stanton of Northern Arizona University are fifth with 35-8.

Sunny skies gave way to cloudy conditions for much of the competition day on Thursday. The cloud cover improved the fishing as the bass roamed between shallow spawning areas and deeper water in search of food.

“We definitely have it dialed in if the bass react how they should on Friday,” said Bounds, 20, a business management major.

How they should react, according to the game plan, is move farther away from the shoreline. With the largemouth population in all spawning phases the team is choosing the more reliable option of targeting postspawn fish. Under ideal conditions, that requires intercepting bass moving in the same direction — out into deeper water, where they are vulnerable to moving lures.

With even more cloudy conditions and rain in the forecast, that could make the game plan even better.

“If the reaction bite holds up, then we should be in good shape again,” added Leber, 21, a concrete industry management major.

Wittrock and Stanton were among four teams catching limits weighing at least 20 pounds. The 22-5 caught by the pair was vital, because it moved them from 12th place into fifth.

“We caught about 14 pounds each day during practice, so we weren’t expecting to catch over 20 pounds,” said Wittrock.

After the team boated a 5-pound largemouth and lost another, Stanton suggested a change would make the day even better, and it did.

“It was really neat to see a gut feeling pay off,” explained Wittrock. “During the afternoon we upgraded four times.”

Like the leaders, the Northern Arizona team is targeting postspawn bass.

“Our bass are chasing shad, so it’s most definitely a reaction bite,” said Stanton.

Collegiate teams representing 24 colleges with anglers from 13 states are competing on Clear Lake, the largest natural lake in California.

The big day for the event is Friday when the overall team winner is declared and the bonus awards are handed out. The Nitro Big Bag of the tournament goes to the team weighing the heaviest single-day catch. The team earns a Bass Pro Shops gift card valued at $250. The limit weighing 24-9 caught today by Klein and Klemm rank as the heaviest catch.

The Carhartt Big Bass Award worth a $500 gift card goes to the angler catching the biggest bass of the tournament. Frontrunners for the award are teammates Chad Sweitzer and Matthew Featherston of Chico State, who weighed an 8-3 largemouth.

This is the fourth and final collegiate regional tournament of the season. Toledo Bend Reservoir, Louisiana; Cherokee Lake, Tennessee; and Pickwick Lake in Alabama were the previous tournament sites. Those events advanced top finishers to the 2018 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops. The tournament is July 19-21, on Lake Tenkiller near Tahlequah, Okla. Top teams from the Western Tour also advance to the championship.

Teams depart Konocti Vista Resort Marina at 6 a.m. (PDT) and return to the same location for the weigh-in at 2 p.m.

Jig Vs Texas Rig: When Should You Throw Each? MTB

Jig Vs Texas Rig: When Should You Throw Each?

[print_link]

When you find a nice patch of shallow cover, you can bet bass are most likely hiding out somewhere nearby. But, how are you supposed to catch those bass once you find them? The two most common baits to flip or pitch into shallow cover are a jig and a Texas rig. Each has their own calling. Allow Ben Milliken to break it down for you in full here in this video!

When To Throw A Jig Into Shallow Cover

Jigs shine best when imitating craws. Throw a jig around shallow wood cover, near docks, or anywhere else bass would be feasting on craws. Jigs, in my opinion, are also more suited for trophy hunting. The bigger, bulkier presentation is more likely to draw strikes from your new PB than a slimmer Texas Rig.

When To Throw A Texas Rig Into Shallow Cover

Texas rigs are more likely to succeed in vegetation. Throw a T-Rig into more weedy areas with slimmer creature baits or senko style stick baits attached. These are great options for slithering between aquatic vegetation.

While both jig fishing and Texas rig fishing are successful around laydowns and other cover, each has a time and a place. Let us know which is your favorite bait to pitch around shallow cover and what videos we should do next!

Giant Bass Propels Lane Coale Into Early Lead In B.A.S.S. Nation Western Regional

Giant Bass Propels Lane Coale Into Early Lead In B.A.S.S. Nation Western Regional

[print_link]

LAKEPORT, Calif. — As expected following a difficult practice for most competitors, the majority of Clear Lake’s big bass seemed to have a case of lockjaw during the first day of competition at the 2018 Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Western Regional presented by Magellan Outdoors. But, as always, there were a handful of anglers able to figure out what the bass in California’s largest natural body of water were doing.

Catching bass wasn’t the issue for the 220 anglers fishing the event. All but eight of the 110 boaters brought five-bass limits to the scales, while 99 out of 110 co-anglers weighed in three-bass limits.

Putting quality bass in the boat, however, was another story. Known nationally for its numbers of trophy largemouth, Clear Lake surprisingly gave up only a single bass tipping the scales at 10 pounds.

“The fish were scattered,” said first-round leader Lane Coale of Grand Junction, Colo. “And because they haven’t grouped up yet, we had to cover a lot of water. But there were patterns to what we were doing that have held up and are actually getting better every day. I was trying to focus on the one that was catching bigger fish.”

Coale went on to explain that there was a cold wind that was coming from the opposite direction that it had been during practice, which he found repositioned both the baitfish and bass. The biggest key to his success was adjusting accordingly.

“The morning bite was slow, and I had plenty of bites, but the fish just weren’t eating the baits like they had been,” he added. “These fish are really pressured here and I think that made them act funky, which gave me some bad luck. I should have had a limit early.”

Although he wasn’t able to catch as many bass in the morning as he wanted to, Coale was able to cull a few fish throughout the day. The keepers certainly included the Day 1 big bass, a 10-7 monster and his new personal best.

Coale’s heavy limit helped vault the Colorado team into second place with 196-10, only 1-2 behind Montana who is leading the team boater division. Colorado and Montana were the only teams to weigh 80-bass limits. Rounding out the Top 5 were teams from California with 192-6, Arizona with 191-6 and Idaho with 179-11

Montana’s Shane Baertsch, who finished in a tie for second with Todd Herman of Gilbert, Ariz., anchored his team’s strong finish. Both anglers put solid 17-14 limits on the scales.

“For the majority of the day I targeted bedding bass,” said Baertsch who was fishing Clear Lake for the first time, “and I really only fished two half-mile stretches of bank. I caught my limit in the first area within 45 minutes, and was able to cull a little from there. But as the wind got stronger, and the water became muddier, the bite slowed way down.”

Baertsch hooked and landed his biggest largemouth at about midday at his second spot. The key for him was working his areas slowly and thoroughly. He admits that he doesn’t have many options and will be fishing the same two areas on Day 2.

Coale thinks he’ll be able to duplicate his efforts tomorrow, although he questions his ability to fool another 10-pound giant.

Leading the co-angler division, and adding to his team’s lead, is Noxon, Mont., Angler Quincy Grupenhoff, who weighed in three bass totaling 13-3.

Anglers will takeoff from Konocti Vista Resort Marina at 5:30 a.m. PDT and return to the same location for the weigh-in at 2 p.m.

4 Push Pole Tricks to Access More Shallow Fishing Spots By David A. Brown

Trolling motors and Power-Poles definitely help with shallow fishing, but when you just need a little nudge, a slight repositioning, and the ultimate stealth approach, a push pole can be your best buddy.

“When I’m push poling, it’s a time I need complete silence,” said FLW pro Andrew Upshaw. “I don’t want any noise whatsoever. I don’t want any trolling motor noise; a lot of times, I’ll turn my graph off. When I’m in shallow water and fish are spooky, I need to be super quiet and the only way to do that is with a push pole.”

Upshaw’s choice is the T-H Marine Money Pole, a 6 to 18-foot telescoping pole with a coiled tip for retrieving snagged baits. Removing the coil and pushing with a pole he can collapse and store in his rod locker makes good use of a tool he’d carry anyway.

Northeastern State University Leads Bassmaster College Series Regional

LAKEPORT, Calif. — Some days the game plan goes better than expected, and that sums up the day of Caleb Gibson and Tyler Winn, students at Northeastern State University who are leading the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Western Tour presented by Bass Pro Shops.

“We lucked up on a school of big bass early in the day and that made it even better,” said Gibson, who is enrolled with his fishing partner at the university in Tahlequah, Okla.

The team brought in five bass weighing 21 pounds, 15 ounces, including a big bass weighing 6-9.

Gibson and Winn declined to elaborate on their exact game plan, although they made it clear that sunny conditions improved the fishing as morning gave way to afternoon.

“We plan to do the same thing tomorrow, and timing has a lot to do with it,” added Winn. “Being in the right place at the right time made a difference.”

The tournament is setting up to be a prespawn affair. At Clear Lake, currently ranked third in the nation on Bassmaster Magazine’s 100 Best Bass Lakes, largemouth are showing signs of migrating into the shallows to spawn. That could explain much of the success — and heavy weights — enjoyed by the top anglers.

Tyler Craig and Spencer Lambert, fishing for the University of Louisiana at Monroe, hold down second place with 20-5. Joey Price and Bobby Fralix of Clemson University are third with 18-1. Fishing for the University of Idaho are Jon Hickey and Austin Turpin, with 17-3 for fourth place. Carson Leber and Tyler Bounds of Chico State University are fifth with 17-1.

“We expected to catch about 12 pounds and got lucky to catch a couple that pushed us way over the top,” said Craig. “What really helped was the wind; we need more of it on Thursday.”

The good news for the first- and second-place teams is that wind and sun are in the forecast for Thursday.

Clemson is leveraging the strength of Price’s knowledge of Clear Lake. He is a California native attending the school located in South Carolina. After boating a largemouth weighing 5-1 and several more in the 3-pound range, the anglers switched strategies, even with luck on their side.

“I knew that if we are going to win this tournament, it will take fishing for the big bass this lake is known to have in it,” explained Price.

Another heated battle is brewing for Team of the Year. So coveted is this new award that some teams traveled cross-country for a final shot at winning. Craig and Lambert drove 34 hours nonstop to northern California for the tournament.

Before today they led the standings with 1,407.06 points, and had a 35-point lead over the third-place team of Dillon Harrell and Colby Bryant. The Sam Houston State University students are currently 10th overall in the tournament.

“We want to be the first team to win this new title, so that alone made the drive out here worth it,” said Lambert.

Collegiate teams representing 24 colleges with anglers from 13 states are competing on Clear Lake, the largest natural lake in California.

The big day for the event is Friday when the overall team winner is declared along with these bonus awards. The Bass Pro Shops Nitro Big Bag of the tournament goes to the team weighing the heaviest single-day catch. The team earns a Bass Pro Shops gift card valued at $250. The Carhartt Big Bass Award worth a $500 gift card goes to the angler catching the biggest bass of the tournament.

Top teams from the Western Regional also advance to the championship.

Teams depart Konocti Vista Resort Marina at 6 a.m. (PDT) and return to the same location for the weigh-in at 2 p.m.

COUNTRY MUSIC STAR JUSTIN MOORE SET TO ROCK FLW CUP IN HOT SPRINGS

COUNTRY MUSIC STAR JUSTIN MOORE SET TO ROCK FLW CUP IN HOT SPRINGS

Moore To Perform Concert Presented by Realtree and KSSN 96 Prior to Forrest Wood Cup – Bass Fishing’s World Championship

 [print_link]

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (May 23, 2018) – Country sensation Justin Moore will captivate the crowd with a free concert on the weigh-in stage at the Bank of the Ozarks Arena in Hot Springs on Sunday, August 12, beginning at 4 p.m. before the world’s premier bass anglers weigh their final-day limits at the 2018 Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) Forrest Wood Cup – professional bass fishing’s world championship. Fans of all ages are encouraged to attend the free concert which is presented by Realtree and KSSN 96. Moore will be performing songs from his latest album, Kinda Don’t Care, to fishing fans in Arkansas as well as live-streamed to fans around the globe at FLWFishing.com.

The title to country radio hitmaker Moore’s fourth studio album may suggest he doesn’t give a damn, but when it comes to the music, nothing could be further from the truth. On Kinda Don’t Care (The Valory Music Co.), the Arkansas singer, outdoorsman and family man reaffirms his commitment to recording honest, entertaining country songs. Sure, they may be unapologetic at times, but that’s Moore, an artist who refuses to ever project anything he’s not.

“The title refers to how uptight our society has become. It’s in a place right now where we are consumed with being politically correct. Sometimes you just have to worry about being correct and telling it like it is,” said Moore. Which is what he’s always done with his impressive string of hits, from his five Number One singles, including “Small Town USA” and “If Heaven Wasn’t So Far Away,” to the gold-certified singles “Bait a Hook” and “Backwoods.”

“As one of our sport’s most celebrated events, the FLW Cup deserves one of music’s most exciting acts, and Justin Moore certainly fits that mold,” said Kelly Oettinger, FLW Vice President of Marketing. “We have a storied history of some of the top country artists in the world performing here and by continuing to provide our fans with first-class entertainment, along with the first-class bass fishing that our anglers will experience on Lake Ouachita, we are confident that fans will have the experience of a lifetime this August.”

Moore relishes being onstage, where, even in the glare of the spotlight, he’s able to connect with fans and show them he’s just like them.

“One of the things I hear most often after shows is, ‘Man, you’re so normal.’ I guess people have this idea that, if you have any small amount of fame or success, you’re supposed to be some kind of freak show or superhero. Z-Man® Fishing’s new SlingBladeZ™ spinnerbait comes alive at ICAST 2018

When Metallurgy Meets the Water

Z-Man® Fishing’s new SlingBladeZ™ spinnerbait comes alive at ICAST 2018

LADSON, SC (MAY 22, 2018) – How exactly does one remake a classic, already exceptional bass bait? That’s the self-imposed question the tackle techs at Z-Man asked themselves about a year ago, as they stood before a big white drawing board.

The objectives were clear: To re-engineer a new breed of spinnerbait. To optimize wire material, bend and metal blades so they reverberate perfect bass music—those powerful, low-frequency vibrations fish perceive and attack via lateral line. And to imbue the spinnerbait with a talent for tracking straight as an arrow at all times and at any retrieve speed. Plus, a few more goodies up its sleeve . . .

Did they succeed? See what Bassmaster Elite Series pro Luke Clausen has to say. Plus, get the full scoop from Z-Man Fishing at ICAST 2018.
