Flick Shake Fishing: Mastering The Weighted Wacky Rig For Bass – MTB

Flick Shake Fishing: Mastering The Weighted Wacky Rig For Bass

[print_link]

Often referred to as a Flick Shake, a weighted jig head paired with a wacky rigged stick bait catches bass all over the country, almost all of the time. If you’ve fished a weightless wacky rig, or you’re looking for a new finesse technique, this one’s for you.

A weighted jig head or ‘Flick Shake’ is essentially a weighted jig head sitting on top of a wide gap finesse hook. Think of it as a wacky hook with a weight. It’s designed to be paired with your favorite plastic stick bait, and rigged wacky style.
Pairing a flick shake with a Senko or Trick Worm style bait will provide an irresistible shimmy action as the bait falls. As the jig head pulls the bait down, you’ll see your worm dance all the way to the bottom.

Usually, a natural presentation will be the best choice, so choose the lightest weight you can get away with. I like to use anything from 1/16 oz to ⅛ oz, but I’ll use a heavier weight in deeper water or current.

Spinning equipment works best for this finesse presentation. Use a 6’9’’- 7’0’’ spinning rod with a fast tip, paired with a 2500 size spinning reel. For line, go with fluorocarbon or light braid to a fluorocarbon leader. Using 6-12lb test will be just fine.

One advantage of weighted jig heads, compared to a weightless option, is speed. The added weight to the wacky jig head helps you cover water much faster, while still presenting a finesse presentation. Another bonus is that the added weight and increased fall rate also helps you apply the technique in deeper water, or while fishing in current.

Where To Throw A Flick Shake

Rig up your weighted jig head when fishing shallow cover like docks, brush, laydowns, or stumps. Try it when you move out deeper and focus on weedlines, rock bars, points, and other offshore hangouts.

Cast out and let your bait fall to the bottom on a slackline. Once it hits bottom, give it a few hearty pops, and let it fall back to bottom. Continue this approach all the way back while changing the lifts, pops and pauses.  Popping and lifting will help show off the baits shimmy action, while driving bass wild. Keep a close eye on your line while the bait descends back to bottom, I get most of my baits on the fall.

Bank fisherman should keep a wacky jig head in their arsenal at all times, it’s a technique that works almost everywhere, and it’s easy to fish from the bank. It’s subtle action and slow fall is perfect for fishing ponds, lakes, or creeks. The beauty of the bait is the versatility and natural presentation. When fishing from the bank try casting it parallel to the shore, working it slowly back to you with intermittent hops and pauses along the way. When you get a bite it’s important to remember what you were doing, and at roughly what depth you were fishing. Doing this will help you develop a pattern on where the fish are at, and what they’re wanting on that particular day.

Lowrance Angler Drew Benton Wins Toyota Bassmaster Texas Fest

Lowrance Angler Drew Benton Wins Toyota Bassmaster Texas Fest

[print_link]

Tulsa, Okla. – Lowrance®, a world-leader in fishing electronics since 1957, announced today that Lowrance professional angler Drew Benton of Panama City, Florida won the 2018 Toyota® Bassmaster Texas Fest benefiting Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The event was held May 17-20 on Lake Travis in Jonestown, Texas. Benton’s four-day weight of 67 pounds, 15 ounces took first place and the $100,000 prize. Benton also won the Toyota Bonus Bucks Award of $3,000 for being the highest-placing eligible entrant in the program.

Jacob Wheeler of Harrison, Tenn., also a Lowrance professional, placed second with a four-day total of 64 pounds, 8 ounces. Five of the Top 12 anglers used Lowrance fishfinder/chartplotters – more than any other brand.

“While figuring out which banks were going to be productive, I looked at my mapping and could tell whether it was deep water or shallow,” said Benton. “Early in the morning, when the fish were schooling, I would go out into deeper water. By seeing exactly how deep the fish were, I could use either a swim bait or my topwater lures. I used StructureScan all week, and with the new FishReveal technology, I could see exactly how big the fish were, which made a difference.”

“We are proud of the top-notch performance of our anglers in every tournament this year,” said Leif Ottosson, CEO, Navico. “Lowrance anglers are consistently at the top of the leaderboard. Our superior sonar technology, coupled with an easy-to-use interface gives our team all the information they need to focus on fishing. The results speak for themselves.”

From now until May 31, buyer’s can get up to $500 back in the HDS Ultimate Upgrade promotion. For details visit https://www.lowrance.com/offers/.

The 2018 BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 128 tournaments throughout the season, five qualifying events in each division. The top 45 boaters and co-anglers from each division, along with the five winners of the qualifying events, will advance to one of six regional tournaments where they are competing to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American. MONETA’S TILLEY WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE SHENANDOAH DIVISION EVENT AT SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE

Fredericksburg’s Williams Wins Co-angler Title

[print_link]

HUDDLESTON, Va. (May 21, 2018) – Boater Rick Tilley of Moneta, Virginia, brought a five-bass limit to the scale weighing 18 pounds, 5 ounces Saturday to win the 2018 T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Shenandoah Division event at Smith Mountain Lake. Tilley earned $4,350 for his victory.

“I was fishing up the Roanoke River – between the State Park and the bridge,” said Tilley, who earned his first career win in BFL competition. “I was fishing the bank and everything that I caught was coming in less than 2 feet of water.

“There is a unique type of fishing here that a lot of the locals know about,” Tilley said. “The shad spawn at night – between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. – and the bass sit on the rocks and you can throw a topwater bait and they will just annihilate it. With the cloudy conditions on Saturday morning, I knew the leftover fish from the night time would stay there and that they would come into play.

“I had most of my weight by 10:30-11 (a.m.),” Tilley went on to say. “All of my fish came on a blue and silver-colored Lucky Craft Sammy, although I did catch one smallmouth on a swimbait. The key was that you had to be dead up on the bank to catch them. After 12:30 I went deeper and tried to fish ‘big fish’ areas, but I never did upgrade.”
