WELEETKA’S JOHNSON WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE OKIE DIVISION EVENT AT LAKE EUFAULA

WELEETKA’S JOHNSON WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE OKIE DIVISION EVENT AT LAKE EUFAULA

Broken Arrow’s Weir Wins Co-angler Title

EUFAULA, Okla. (May 21, 2018) – Boater Mark Johnson of Weleetka, Oklahoma, brought a five-bass limit to the scale weighing 18 pounds, 6 ounces Saturday to win the 2018 T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Okie Division event at Lake Eufaula. For his victory, Johnson earned $5,349.

“I spent my tournament fishing on the lower end of the lake, near the dam,” said Johnson, a former FLW College Fishing angler who earned his first career win in BFL competition. “At my first spot, I fished for an hour and a half but only caught one 2-pounder. I moved to my second area and within 30 minutes I had my tournament weight.”

Johnson said that he fished rock piles where the post-spawn fish were setting up, in 15- to 20-feet of water. He credited an unnamed green-pumpkin-colored Football jig with a Zoom Brush Hog and a Carolina-rigged green-pumpkin Brush Hog as his key baits.

“I caught around 20 keepers, but the fish were post-spawn and not looking so good,” Johnson said. “I felt that if I kept them in my livewell much longer I would lose them. So, I decided to end my tournament around 11:30 and weigh what I had in order to keep my fish alive and avoid any penalties.

“That decision to weigh-in early ended up winning me the tournament,” Johnson continued. “If I would have waited, one or two may have been deceased and I would have gotten a dead-fish penalty, which would have cost me the win. My BassCat and Mercury were crucial to making the long run back to weigh-in and keeping my fish alive.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Mark Johnson, Weleetka, Okla., five bass, 18-6, $5,349

2nd:         Justin Phillips, Checotah, Okla., five bass, 17-15, $2,675

GEORGIA’S WOOD WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE SOUTH CAROLINA DIVISION EVENT AT CLARKS HILL LAKE

GEORGIA’S WOOD WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE SOUTH CAROLINA DIVISION EVENT AT CLARKS HILL LAKE

Greenville’s Miller Wins Co-angler Title

MCCORMICK, S.C. (May 21, 2018) – Boater Adam Wood of Springfield, Georgia, caught five bass weighing 21 pounds, 3 ounces, Saturday to win the 2018 T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) South Carolina Division event at Clarks Hill Lake. For his victory, Wood earned $4,550.

“I didn’t know where I was going the morning of the tournament, but I was boat number 38 and after I watched the first 37 boats leave takeoff and head south I decided to go north for a peaceful day on the water, and I ended up whacking them,” said Wood, who earned his first career win in BFL competition. “I spent the entire day fishing the north end of the lake, around Russell Dam. It was desolate – not another boat around me – and turned out to be an awesome day.”

Wood said that he caught nearly all of his keepers on a ¾-ounce Strike King Red Eye Shad (Chartreuse Sexy-Shad) but added one on a Jackall Squad Minnow jerkbait.

“I was fishing a point that had a good hard bottom and some scattered grass,” Wood said. “The wind had blown a big school of shad up shallow onto it, and everything that I weighed in came off of that point. I caught around 15 bass throughout the day, and a dozen of them came off of that one spot.”

Wood reported that he did catch a couple of spotted bass Saturday, but his limit that he brought to the weigh-in stage consisted entirely of largemouth.

“The spot the fish were set up on was not big – about as big as the neck of a boat. You had to be pretty precise with your casts.”

TOLEDO’S BLACK WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE ILLINI DIVISION EVENT AT LAKE SHELBYVILLE PRESENTED BY NAVIONICS

TOLEDO’S BLACK WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE ILLINI DIVISION EVENT AT LAKE SHELBYVILLE PRESENTED BY NAVIONICS

Benton’s Johnson Wins Co-angler Title

[print_link]

SHELBYVILLE, Ill. (May 21, 2018) – Boater Michael Black of Toledo, Illinois, brought a five-bass limit to the scale weighing 14 pounds, 12 ounces, Saturday to win the 2018 T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Illini Division event at Lake Shelbyville presented by Navionics. For his victory, Wood brought home $6,879.

“I’m 65 years old, and anytime that I can get a win these days is just that much more of a plus,” said Black, who earned his eighth career win in BFL competition. “The best fisherman in the state of Illinois compete in these tournaments, and to get a win against anglers of this caliber is an honor.”

Black said he spent the day fishing shallow flats back in the Lithia Springs area. He said that one of the keys was that the fish had to be on a flat, near a drop.

“I figured out the pattern right near the end of practice, and I didn’t really have time to practice it but I had a little time Friday night to think about it,” Black said. “I have some experience on this lake, so I targeted areas where I thought I could duplicate it – a shallow flat with a drop right by it. It didn’t have to be a 30-foot drop – but a 6-foot or so drop nearby.”

Black said that he managed to catch 25 to 30 fish throughout the day, with 8 keepers. He caught his fish on a Wicked Lures In-Line Spinner and a Carolina-rigged watermelon seed-colored Zoom Baby Brush Hog with chartreuse on the tail.

“I don’t normally fish a Carolina Rig – I’m a jig fisherman. But, the bass were in pre-spawn and spawn mode and you had to give them something subtle.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Michael Black, Toledo, Ill., five bass, 14-12, $4,879 + $2,000 Ranger Cup Bonus

2nd:         Shane Haslett, Beecher City, Ill., five bass, 13-0, $1,940

3rd:         Travis Wilson, La Harpe, Ill., five bass, 11-13, $1,225

4th:         Wayne Shaw, Urbana, Ill., four bass, 11-2, $859

5th:         Bobby McMullin, Pevely, Mo., five bass, 10-14, $736

6th:         Luke Budde, St. Louis, Mo., four bass, 10-12, $675

SPORTSMAN’S PARADISE TO HOST TWO FLW BASS FISHING CHAMPIONSHIPS – T-H MARINE BFL ALL-AMERICAN ON CROSS LAKE, YETI FLW COLLEGE FISHING NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP ON RED RIVER

More than 500 Anglers to Descend on Shreveport and Bossier City This Month for 35th annual BFL All-American and the FLW College Fishing National Championship – Two Internationally-Televised Tournaments

[print_link]

SHREVEPORT, La. (May 21, 2018) – The nation’s top weekend and collegiate bass-fishing anglers are set to compete at two of the most prestigious bass-fishing championships in the country in the Sportsman’s Paradise this month – the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) All-American on Cross Lake, May 31-June 2, and the YETI FLW College Fishing National Championship presented by Lowrance C-MAP Genesis on the Red River, May 30-June 1.

An automatic entry to compete at the 2018 Forrest Wood Cup is up for grabs to the winner of each respective event, along with hundreds of thousands of dollars and a brand new Ranger Boat. The events are hosted by the Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission & Red River Waterway Commission.

“The Red River and Cross Lake are two great fisheries and are the perfect venue to host these two championships,” said FLW Tour pro Jim Dillard of West Monroe, Louisiana. “It’s summertime in Louisiana, so just about all of the bass will be finished with the spawn. Typical Louisiana patterns will be in play – topwaters in the morning and something slower, like a worm or a jig on the bottom, in the afternoon when it gets sunny and hot.”

The 2018 BFL All-American on Cross Lake field will feature the top 98 boaters and co-anglers from across the 24-division BFL circuit competing for a grand prize of up to $120,000 in the boater division and $60,000 in the co-angler division. The top boater will receive an invitation to compete for bass fishing’s most coveted prize – the 2018 Forrest Wood Cup – Aug. 10-12 on Lake Ouachita in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Since its inaugural event in 1983, the BFL All-American championship has visited Cross Lake twice (2002, 2011) in its 35 year history. In 2002, boater Eddie Waits III of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, targeted bass that were suspended in shady areas between cypress trees with a 30-year old crankbait to claim the title. In 2011, then 20-year old boater Jacob Wheeler of Indianapolis, Indiana, became the youngest All-American champion in history by targeting Cross Lake’s plentiful docks and cypress trees to win by a 9-pound margin and jump-start his career as a professional angler.

The 2018 YETI FLW College Fishing National Championship at the Red River will be comprised of the top qualifying teams from each of the 15 regular-season events from around the country, along with the top 20 teams from the annual FLW College Fishing Open. A field of 182 teams representing 105 different colleges and universities – including the first ever all-female team featuring qualifiers from the Savannah College of Art and Design – will be competing for a prize package that includes a new Ranger Z175 boat with a 90-horsepower Mercury or Evinrude outboard. The winning team will compete against each other on Saturday, June 2, in a one-day fish-off at a local body of water that will be revealed on stage, to see which team member will move on to compete against the best bass-anglers in the world at the 2018 Forrest Wood Cup.

“Winning the FLW College Fishing National Championship was the definite jump-start to my career as a professional angler,” said FLW Tour pro Austin Felix, the 2014 College Fishing National Champion for the Minnesota Golden Gopher Bass Club. “Touring the country for College Fishing, it opened my eyes that if you knew how fish reacted to certain situations, regardless of the lake, you could compete. Winning the national championship was a slingshot that gave me the notoriety to get my career off the ground.”

BFL All-American competitors will take off from the American Legion Hall ramp, located at 5315 S. Lakeshore Drive in Shreveport, at 7 a.m. CDT each morning, May 31 to June 2. Weigh-ins each day will be held at the Bass Pro Shops, located at 100 Bass Pro Drive in Bossier City, Louisiana, and will begin at 4 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

The FLW College Fishing National Championship anglers will take off each day, May 30 to June 1, from Red River South Marina, located at 250 Red River South Marina Road, in Bossier City, Louisiana, at 6:30 a.m. CDT. Wednesday and Thursday’s weigh-in will be held at the marina, beginning at 2:30 p.m. Friday’s Championship weigh-in will be held at the Bass Pro Shops, located at 100 Bass Pro Drive in Bossier City, at 3:30 p.m. prior to the Day Two weigh-in of the BFL All-American championship.

Television coverage of the 2018 T-H Marine BFL All-American and the YETI FLW College Fishing National Championship will premiere on NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) later this year. The BFL All-American will premiere Aug. 1, from Noon to 1 p.m. EDT, while the FLW College Fishing National Championship will debut on Aug. 15 from Noon to 1 p.m. The Emmy-nominated “FLW” television show airs on NBCSN, the Pursuit Channel and the World Fishing Network and is broadcast to more than 564 million households worldwide, making it the most widely distributed weekly outdoors-sports television show in the world.

Tennessee’s Jason Lambert Weighs More than 100 Pounds of Bass in Four Days at Kentucky Lake, Wins $100,000

GILBERTSVILLE, Ky. (May 20, 2018) – Pro Jason Lambert of Michie, Tennessee, brought five bass weighing 27 pounds, 3 ounces, to the FLW weigh-in stage Sunday to win the FLW Tour at Kentucky Lake presented by Costa Sunglasses by a margin of 28 pounds even – a new all-time FLW Tour record for margin of victory. Overall, Lambert’s four-day total of 101 pounds, 9 ounces, was the most weight to ever win an FLW Tour event at Kentucky Lake, and the tenth-largest total-tournament catch in FLW Tour history. For his dominant performance on the water this week, Lambert earned $100,000.

“To catch over 100 pounds here – that’s history. It’s something that will last forever,” said Lambert, who claimed his third career win on Kentucky Lake in FLW competition. “This whole week has been phenomenal – this lake is special to me.”

Lambert’s first stop on championship Sunday was a point protruding from the mouth of Pisgah Bay, the location where he upgraded his limit with a 9-pounder Saturday. With a 19-pound advantage heading into today’s competition, Lambert knew that all he needed was a few keeper bites to shut the door.

“I started out this morning and got like two 3’s and a 5 on my first three casts, and immediately the pressure was off,” said Lambert. “I knew at that point in time that the game was over.”

As the morning progressed, Lambert moved to an area that produced for him both on Thursday and Saturday – a south-facing point on a main-lake ridge, just north of the U.S. Highway 68 bridge.

“I caught around five there, including a few 4-pounders that didn’t help and a giant,” said Lambert. “The fish were in about 24 feet of water and right on the break of the point.”

Lambert’s main lure for the week was a 5- and 7-inch Green Shad-colored Castaic Jerky J soft jerkbait on a 1-ounce Scrounger Head-type jig on 18-pound-test Sunline Super FC Sniper Fluorocarbon line with a 7-foot, 11-inch Duckett White Ice II swimbait rod and a Duckett 360RW reel. On Friday, Lambert also used a Gene Larew Tattletail Worm on a jighead to catch his limit south of Paris from a ditch on a shallow roadbed.

“For me, the Jerky J is a confidence bait more than anything. Everybody throws a paddle tail swimbait and it’s got that big wide wobbling tail on the back, but the Jerky J has a sleeker, more subtle approach – it really looks like a shad swimming in the water. I have the confidence in it to throw it, and I love it.”

The final 10 pros finished on Kentucky Lake:

1st:          Jason Lambert, Michie, Tenn., 20 bass, 101-9, $100,200

2nd:         Scott Martin, Clewiston, Fla., 20 bass, 73-9. $30,100

3rd:          Josh Douglas, Isle, Minn., 20 bass, 72-12, $25,000

6th:          Alex Davis, Albertville, Ala., 18 bass, 67-13, $18,000

7th:          Jeff Gustafson, Keewatin, Ontario, Canada, 20 bass, 67-0, $17,000

8th:          Cody Meyer, Auburn, Calif., 20 bass, 64-8, $16,000

Overall there were 48 bass weighing 180 pounds, 8 ounces, caught by all 10 pros Sunday. Eight of the final 10 pros caught a five-bass limit.

Ronny Webb of Dyersburg, Tennessee, won the Co-angler Division and $25,000 Friday with a two-day total of nine bass weighing 26 pounds, 14 ounces, followed by Stephen Crawley of Bush, Louisiana, who finished in second place with eight bass totaling 25-4, worth $7,600.

Television coverage of the FLW Tour at Kentucky Lake presented by Costa Sunglasses will premiere in high-definition (HD) on NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) June 27 from Noon-1 p.m. EST. The Emmy-nominated “FLW” television show airs on NBCSN, the Pursuit Channel and the World Fishing Network and is broadcast to more than 564 million households worldwide.

The total purse for the FLW Tour at Kentucky Lake presented by Costa Sunglasses was more than $930,000. The event was hosted by the Kentucky Lake Convention & Visitors Bureau. The next tournament for FLW Tour anglers will be the FLW Tour at Lake St. Clair presented by Mercury, June 28 to July 1, in Detroit, Michigan, hosted by the Detroit Sports Commission, Macomb County, Huron-Clinton Metroparks Authority, and the Sterling Heights Regional Chamber of Commerce.

In FLW Tour competition, pros and co-anglers are randomly paired each day, with pros supplying the boat, controlling boat movement and competing against other pros. Co-anglers fish from the back deck against other co-anglers. The full field of anglers competed in the two-day opening round. Co-angler competition concluded following Friday’s weigh-in, while the top 30 pros based on their two-day accumulated weight advanced to Saturday. Only the top 10 pros continued competition Sunday, with the winner determined by the heaviest accumulated weight from the four days of competition.

Throughout the season, anglers are also vying for valuable points in hopes of qualifying for the 2018 Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of professional bass fishing. The 2018 Forrest Wood Cup will be on Lake Ouachita in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Aug. 10-12 and is hosted by the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism and Visit Hot Springs.

Drew Benton Wins First Elite Series Title At Texas Fest On Lake Travis

Drew Benton Wins First Elite Series Title At Texas Fest On Lake Travis

JONESTOWN, Texas — Drew Benton of Panama City, Fla., capped off an impressive week with a Championship Sunday five-bass limit that weighed 16 pounds, 15 ounces to win first place and $100,000 at the 2018 Toyota Bassmaster Texas Fest benefiting Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

The third-year pro finished in fourth place at his first tournament as a Bassmaster Elite Series contender; today he bested the Top 108 bass anglers in world with a four-day weight of 67-15.

Benton’s final day didn’t start out as planned.

After a minor rule infraction, he had to endure a 15-minute delay at take off, which he feared would impact his morning bite.

“It was a stupid mistake on my part,” he said. “But over the past couple of days, I was catching my best fish during the first 15 to 20 minutes of the morning in a marina up Lake Travis. I was sharing water with Marty Robinson, and he graciously agreed to let me have that area to myself, even after I sat in the penalty box for 15 minutes. That was huge, and I’m grateful he worked with me.”

Benton was sure to acknowledge Robinson’s generosity and sacrifice, although he later found out that due to the cloudy, rainy weather the action in his marina had faded.

“I’m confident the weather this morning really suppressed the shad activity that had the bass feeding so heavily during the previous mornings,” he said. “The weather also kept the pleasure boaters off the water, which allowed me to fish some areas that were otherwise unfishable.”

The 30-year-old angler had two different patterns going: One in the morning and one in the afternoon.

“I found some fish during practice that helped me throughout this tournament,” he said. “But I really didn’t put it together until later in the day on Day 1. I was using a walking topwater presentation that was working well throughout the day, even in the hot sun and clear skies. I decided to give it an hour during the first day, and it paid off.”

Benton was using a 7-foot, 1-inch Phenix Rods Feather casting rod paired with a Lew’s Team Pro Magnesium Speed Spool baitcaster in a 7.5:1 gear ratio loaded with 65-pound Smackdown Seaguar braid.

His topwater lure of choice was a Bagley Knocker B rigged with Owner No. 2 trebles that caught bass around docks in marinas, over schooling bass, near bushes and along rocky shorelines that were protected from the wind and boat-traffic wake.

“I’ve been close to winning one of these before,” he said. “And I know it’s been said before, but everything has to go right to be the last man standing at a Bassmaster Elite Series tournament. If it’s meant to be, and it’s your time it’s going to happen.

“This is a dream come true, and I can’t tell you how grateful I am to win this thing,” Benton said. “Things were going my way early on, and I felt that momentum swing my way. I knew that I had to be smart with every cast. This was an awesome win for me and my family.”

Jacob Wheeler of Harrison, Tenn., caught 16-2 pushing his four-day total to 64-8, which was good enough for second place and valuable Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year points.

“I spent most of my time up the Colorado River fishing water that was dirtier than the rest of the lake,” he said. “Most of my fish came on a 7/8-ounce silver jigging spoon that mimicked the plentiful shad in the lake. I also caught a few bass on a custom topwater prop bait when they were on the surface chasing bait.”

Cliff Pace of Petal, Miss., caught a 10-5 largemouth bass on the first morning of the event. That fish held up as the tournament’s biggest bass, and earned Pace a brand new Toyota Tundra pickup valued at $50,000.

That big bass helped Pace finish in third place, which is a position he held down all four days of the event.

“That was the very first fish I caught during the first morning of the tournament,” Pace said. “I caught that bass from 27 feet of water on a Carolina rig with a V&M Drop Shad in green pumpkin.”

This tournament was held under a unique format where the fish were immediately weighed, recorded and released. However, each pro could bring one bass back to weigh-in if it measured over 18 inches. A $1 million purse was paid out to the entire field.

Brent Chapman of Lake Quivira, Kan., was awarded $1,000 for the leading the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year points race at the end of the event.

Gerald Spohrer of Gonzales, La., earned the Power-Pole Captain’s Cash Award of $1,000 for being the highest-placing angler who is registered and eligible and uses a client-approved product on his boat.

Benton also won the Toyota Bonus Bucks Award of $3,000 for being the highest-placing eligible entrant in the program. The second-highest-placing eligible entrant, Pace, received $2,000.
