Chatterbait Fishing Tips: How To Fish A Chatterbait 3 Different Ways
Chatterbait Fishing Tips: How To Fish A Chatterbait 3 Different Ways
A Chatterbait fished alone will catch lots of bass, but adding a soft plastic trailer will enhance your chances of catching even more fish.
The Chatterbait itself has plenty of action and vibration for attracting bass, yet you can add more bulk, buoyancy and action to the lure with a plastic trailer attached to the bladed jig. You can also add more color to your Chatterbait by attaching a plastic trailer in a contrasting hue.
A variety of soft plastics including toad-style baits, paddletail swimbaits and beaver-style baits can be attached to a Chatterbait, but here’s a look at three of the best trailers to enhance a bladed jig.
Chatterbait Trailer 1: Split-Tail Grubs
This is the trailer I use most frequently on my bladed jig to give the lure some added length and increased tail action. This style of trailer works best as a finesse presentation of a Chatterbait when bass are finicky due to fishing pressure or clear water conditions.
The trailer is also ideal for Chatterbaits when you want to fish the blade jig in vegetation because the grub is streamlined and glides through the grass. Bulky trailers or ones with appendages tend to cause your bladed jig to bog down in the weeds.
This is the first trailer you should try because it will catch both numbers of bass and quality fish.
Chatterbait Trailer 2: Flukes
This soft jerkbait is an ideal bladed jig trailer year round, but it really shines in summer, fall and winter when bass feed mainly on shad. When attached to the back of a Chatterbait, the Fluke imitates the same gliding action as a swimming shad.
Try this combination any time you see shad flicking on the surface or balls of baitfish on your electronics. Throw it around shallow cover such as rocks, grass and stumps to catch bass ambushing baitfish.
Chatterbait Trailer 3: Plastic Craws
A plastic craw with flappy appendages adds bulk and action to your presentation. The craw is an ideal trailer for many occasions but probably works best in dirty water situations.
A craw attached to a bladed jig moves more water allowing the combo to work on a slow retrieve. So the combination is effective in both cold and hot water because it can be slow-rolled or dead-sticked to tempt lethargic bass into biting.

Wesley Strader Angling For Second Straight B.A.S.S. Win

CORNELIUS, N.C. — A seven-hour practice and a 6-pound clue pushed Wesley Strader atop the leaderboard today in the semifinal round of the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Eastern Open No. 2 at Lake Norman. Strader of Spring City, Tenn., is vying for back-to-back B.A.S.S. tournament victories after his win last week in the Berkley Bassmaster Elite at Kentucky Lake presented by Abu Garcia.
“When it’s going your way it’s going your way,” Strader said. “I’m in disbelief, I only had seven hours to practice, and I caught a 6-pound bass on the first cast.”
Strader brought a tournament-best 17 pounds, 6 ounces to the scales today, after weighing 13-13 on Thursday, which had him in sixth place.
“I’m fishing a shad spawn in a current-driven area, and I had my weight by 10 a.m. both days,” Strader said. “I could go out tomorrow and not catch one out of that area, but I feel like I have a backup plan.”
Strader is employing the same spinnerbait that he won with at Kentucky Lake.
“I caught all of my fish, but one, on my 5/8-ounce signature series Zorro Bango Blade, the exact color, and blade combination.”
Strader’s 17-6 limit, which included one spotted bass, gave him a two-day total of 31-3. Behind Strader’s momentum is fellow Elite Series pro Jared Lintner. The Arroyo Grande, Calif., angler weighed 14-6 for a two-day total of 26-1. He’s 5 pounds, 2 ounces behind Strader.
“It’s tough to beat a guy with momentum like (Strader),” Lintner said. “I only had one bass at 11:30 today.”
Though Lintner is not sight fishing, he noted that seeing the bass during the latter part of the day has been key for his pattern.
“When the sun gets directly overhead, you get a little bit of a shade line,” he said. “It’s not that I can pinpoint them. But when you get a bite, it’s a good one. I’m covering a lot of water.
“I’m going out tomorrow and grinding it out; I’m not fishing for a 7-pound limit of spotted bass.”
After having one of two 15-pound limits during the opening round, Cody Pike fell from second to third place, with 9-7.
“The bass just did not want to bite for me today,” Pike said. “I had five or six good fish follow my bait out, they just would not commit.”
Whitney Stephens of Waverly, Ohio, is in fourth place with 24-12, and Garrett Paquette of Canton, Mich., is in fifth place with 24-5.
Leading the co-angler standings is Rodney Tapp of North Augusta, S.C., with 14-15. Austin Bonjour of Templeton, Calif., is second with 14-5, and Chad Smith of Minnetonka, Minn., is third with 13-12.
The new leader of the Phoenix Boats Big Bass Award for the tournament is Allen Brooks of Canton, Ga., with a 6-pound, 5-ounce largemouth. Bonjour is tied with Paul Coburn, of Pewaukee, Wis., with a 5-pound, 5-ounce largemouth for the lead of the Phoenix Boats Big Bass on the co-angler side.
The Top 12 pro and co-anglers advance to Championship Saturday. Saturday’s 6:15 a.m. ET launch will be held at Blythe Landing, 15901 NC 73 Highway in Huntersville and will conclude with weigh-in, beginning at 3:15 p.m., at the Bass Pro Shops at 8181 Concord Mills Blvd. in Concord.
The event is being hosted by Visit Lake Norman, Visit Cabarrus and Visit Charlotte.

Bethel University Team Retains Lead In Bassmaster College Series Tournament

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — Cully Scroggins and Nathon Portch say they are using intuition to key in on the best locations to find bass during the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Eastern Tour presented by Bass Pro Shops.
Whatever the method, it’s working.
Scroggins and Portch, who compete for Bethel University, maintained their lead in the college tour stop on Cherokee Lake. They caught a five-bass limit of 12 pounds, 5 ounces, that when combined with their total of 17-7 on Day 1, gives them a two-day total of 29-12.
It’s a lead, but there are 31 teams right on their heels on an extremely tight leaderboard. After cutting the field from 263 teams to the Top 32 today, less than 6 pounds of bass separates the leaders from the team in 32nd place.
Bethel University is located in Tennessee, but it’s about 330 miles away in the northwest corner of the Volunteer State. So Scroggins and Portch don’t have a home-water advantage on Cherokee.
Quite the opposite, in fact. They said their knowledge of the fishery is limited enough that they decided to cover a lot of water this week looking for something that “looked right.”
“Junk fishing,” they called it, but the results have been anything but junk.
“We fished all new stuff again today,” Portch said. “We’ll probably do that again tomorrow.”
Scroggins said he and Portch had no plan in particular when they began this tournament, and they don’t expect to make one now. After all, the results have them right where they want to be.
“There’s some stuff we like and some stuff we don’t really like,” Scroggins said. “We run onto something and we decide if we like it. If not, we take off and move to the next spot. We trust one another on that. It’s just a feeling. We just have an idea about certain things we’re seeing out there. And the Lord is directing us where to go.”
They’ll have to find the right stuff again on Saturday to hold off a bevy of talented collegians. The University of Alabama’s Lee Mattox and Anderson Aldag are sitting in second place, and Grand Valley State (Mich.) University’s Lucas Murphy and Nolan Hitt are in third. Both tandems have two-day totals of 29-1 and have produced consistent catches through two days.
Brad Ableman and KJ Queen, also of Bethel University, had the biggest catch on Day 2 – a limit that totaled 15-2.
After a rainy Thursday afternoon, the sun shined on Friday and temperatures climbed into the upper 80s. There weren’t as many limits on Friday (110 compared to 146 on Thursday), but the biggest bass were heavier.
After a multitude of 3-pounders were weighed on Thursday, the first few 4-pound bass of the tournament came to the scales on Friday. The largest, a 4-7 largemouth, was caught by Bethel’s Tyler Powell. That bass puts him and partner Ryan Winchester in the lead for the Carhartt Big Bass Award. The $500 certificate will be awarded to the team with the heaviest bass weighed in the tournament.
In all 263 tandems from 125 colleges and universities started the tournament here on Cherokee Lake. The winning duo will earn $2,500 for their school’s fishing team.
Saturday’s launch will begin at 6:30 a.m. ET at the TVA Dam Ramps in Jefferson City. The final weigh-in will switch venues, however, and be held at Carson-Newman University at 3 p.m.

John Wells of Nashville, Tennessee won the American Bass Anglers Open held on Old Hickory Saturday May 5th, 2018. Running out of Sanders Ferry Park the forecast was heavy rain all day but that didn’t stop Wells from dropping 13.92 pounds on the scales to claim the victory and earning a check for $5,000.
“I caught most of my fish on a shaky head in 5 – 11 feet of water fishing around rock and getting a few bites on a spinnerbait in the grass while fishing the lower end of the lake,” said Wells.
Coming in second place was Daniel Crockett from Old Hickory, Tennessee. He brought 5 fish to the scales weighing in at 13.50 pounds which was enough to earn a check for $700 bucks.
“It was just a slow day I caught about 10 fish all day with 5 being keepers. I threw just about everything, but the most fish came on a jig,” stated Crockett.
Third Place was Eric Silverstrim of Indian Mound, Tennessee bringing 5 fish weighing 13.00 pounds and earning a check for $500 bucks.
“Well it was nothing great I just put my head down and went to work with a flipping stick covering a lot of water and found some in the grass and the others around wood and was fortunate to get a few bites,” stated Silverstrim.
Steve Caudell finished 4th with 12.18 pounds earning a check for $910.
Rounding out the top five was Josh Tramel with 12.14 pounds earning a check for $300.

Coming in 3rd was Jeff Wheeley of Lafayette, Tennessee weighing in 3 fish for a total weight of 6.74 pounds earning a check for $300.

Classic Berth, Big Payday On The Line At Toyota Bassmaster Texas Fest
Bassmaster Elite Series pro Michael Iaconelli of Pittsgrove, N.J., will be competing among a full field of 108 anglers in the 2018 Toyota Bassmaster Texas Fest benefiting Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Up for grabs is a 2019 Bassmaster Classic berth and a $100,000 first-place prize.

Classic Berth, Big Payday On The Line At Toyota Bassmaster Texas Fest
[print_link]
JONESTOWN, Texas — There is certainly no shortage of storylines for this year’s Toyota Bassmaster Texas Fest benefiting Texas Parks and Wildlife Department on Lake Travis.
The tournament, which is scheduled for May 17-20 with daily takeoffs from Jones Brothers Park at 6:15 a.m. CT and weigh-ins back at the park each day at 3 p.m., features a total purse of $1 million, with $100,000 going to the winner.
It’s the only regular-season Elite Series event this year that will feature a catch-weigh-release format, where fish are weighed by an onboard judge and immediately released without ever going into a livewell.
It’s also the only regular-season Elite Series tournament that will award an automatic berth to the 2019 Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods — and that’s the part that has New Jersey star Michael Iaconelli’s attention.
“It’s nice that this tournament creates another spot for the Elites in the Classic,” said Iaconelli, who has qualified for the Super Bowl of Bass Fishing 17 straight times. “It gives you a little extra motivation. If I make it, I can take it easy the rest of the year.”
The automatic Classic berth will be especially important to Iaconelli this year since he plans to skip the Elite Series event scheduled for June 7-10 on the Sabine River in Orange, Texas.
The tournament was originally scheduled for April, but heavy flooding in the region forced a postponement — and Iaconelli already has television obligations planned for the new dates.
“Missing Orange, this will be only chance I have to keep my Classic streak alive,” he said. “That’s all the motivation anyone should need.”
With this being the first visit to Lake Travis for B.A.S.S., many of the 108 pros on the Elite Series will be seeing the fishery for the first time.
Iaconelli said he finds that aspect exciting as well.
“I didn’t practice there before it went off-limits,” he said. “I’ve never even laid eyes on the fishery. Guys are going to discover some things at Travis. You’ll see patterns used that you haven’t seen in a long time — or maybe ever before.”
One Elite Series pro who has fished Lake Travis is Oklahoma resident Jeff Kriet. He won an FLW Texas Tournament Trail (TTT) event on the lake in May 2004.
“I like it,” Kriet said of the 29,160-acre impoundment on the Colorado River. “It’s full of bass and fishes just the way I like to fish. It’s a deep, clear lake — and that’s what I like.”
After Kriet’s victory in the TTT event, Lake Travis stayed well below full pool for an extended period. That low water level allowed vegetation to grow up around the shoreline — and since the lake is now full again, that vegetation could create new opportunities for anglers.
“I think guys will catch them a lot of different ways, including flipping,” Kriet said. “The lake is in really good shape.”
Alton Jones, a Texas pro who also has some experience on Lake Travis, agreed.
“During the last decade or so, they’ve put Florida bass in it,” Jones said. “The lake level has been higher, and that’s improved the spawn.
“It’s not the kind of Texas fishery we’re used to — like Toledo Bend or a Sam Rayburn or a Lake Fork. It’s very deep, very clear water.”
Jones said the typical seasonal patterns — like crankbaits, Carolina-rigged plastics and jigs — will likely come into play. He also said the morning topwater bite could be solid, even though the annual shad spawn, which promotes early-morning feeding along the shoreline, is just about over.
“There are some really big fish in the lake,” Jones said. “I don’t think we’ll see lots of guys bringing in stringers of big fish. But there will be some big ones caught — and when you do catch a big one, it will go a long way.”
The Bassmaster Elite Series
Also taking place on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., is Bassmaster University. Bassmaster Elite Series pros will be teaching seminars at the park on a variety of topics related to fishing including techniques, gear, electronics and more. All activities are free and open to the public.

Patrick Walters Claims Narrow Lead In Bassmaster Open At Lake Norman
Patrick Walters of Ladson, S.C., took the lead on the first day of the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Eastern Open No. 2 held on Lake Norman out of Cornelius, N.C. Walters brought 15 pounds, 12 ounces to the scales at Thursday’s weigh-in.

Patrick Walters Claims Narrow Lead In Bassmaster Open At Lake Norman

CORNELIUS, N.C. — It wasn’t difficult to catch a five-bass limit of 14-inch keepers Thursday at Lake Norman. But finding anything bigger was a daunting task. Patrick Walters of Ladson, S.C., and Cody Pike of Powhatan, Va., solved the problem best.
Walters leads the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Eastern Open No. 2 after the opening round with 15 pounds, 12 ounces. Pike is only 6 ounces behind with 15-6.
Finding largemouth bass instead of the much more plentiful, but smaller spotted bass was the key for Walters.
“The largemouth have really begun to show up the last two days,” said Walters, 23, a former FLW College Fishing champion. “Getting another big bite again (Friday) will be the difference between another good bag and an 8- or 9-pound limit.”
There were plenty of those Thursday — 67 pro anglers in the 203-boat field weighed-in limits of 8 pounds or greater.
Walters said he’s rotating three styles of baits while fishing shallow boat docks. He had only one spotted bass in his limit. His largest bass weighed 5-7 and it was caught on a spawning bed.
Pike, 25, who manages an assisted living home, also had a largemouth advantage. His biggest bass was a largemouth that weighed just over 4 pounds.
“I got kind of lucky and caught all my weight in one area, so I didn’t have to put any pressure on any of the other areas I have,” Pike said. “I’m fishing shallow, dirty water, but it’s clearing up, so that could affect my bite.”
Jim Moynagh of Carver, Minn., took the lead for the Phoenix Boats Big Bass award of the tournament with his 6-4 largemouth. It boosted him into third place with 14-9.
“I found that fish Wednesday in practice,” said Moynagh, a veteran pro. “It was in real shallow, murky water. The fish bit three times. It jumped off once when I had it halfway back to the boat. It probably took me 45 minutes to catch it.”
Moynagh is no stranger to Lake Norman. He has fished four FLW tournaments here and made the Top 10 in three, including a second-place finish in 2008.
“I’m not sure how I’ll go about it tomorrow because the largemouth pattern I found in practice didn’t play out,” said Moynagh.
Ronald Farrow of Rock Hill, S.C., fourth with 14-4, and Tyler Berger of Delaware, Ohio, fifth with 14-2, were the only other anglers to top 14 pounds.
Leading the co-angler standings is Paul Coburn of Pewaukee, Wis., who caught a three-bass limit weighing 9-9, which included the lead in the Phoenix Boats Big Bass award for the co-angler division. It weighed 5-5. Rodney Tapp of North Augusta, S.C., is second with 8-15, and Chad Smith of Minnetonka, Minn., is third with 8-5.
Friday’s 6:15 a.m. ET launch and 2:15 p.m. weigh-in will be held at Blythe Landing, 15901 NC 73 Highway in Huntersville. The field will be cut to the Top 12 pros and co-anglers after the Day 2 weigh-in. Championship Saturday’s weigh-in will shift to the Bass Pro Shops at 8181 Concord Mills Blvd. in Concord.
The event is being hosted by Visit Lake Norman, Visit Cabarrus and Visit Charlotte.
