Bethel Wildcats Take First-Round Lead At Bassmaster College Eastern Tour On Cherokee Lake

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — While most other college bass fishing teams were pulling 2 1/2-pound bass out of Cherokee Lake today, Cully Scroggins and Nathon Portch were catching 3 1/2-pounders.

Scroggins and Portch, members of the Bethel University Bass Team, seized the first-round lead in the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Eastern Tour presented by Bass Pro Shops with a five-bass limit that weighed 17 pounds, 7 ounces.

That was nearly 2 pounds better than the second-place team of Zeke Gossett and Hayden Bartee of Jefferson State (Ala.) Community College, who had a limit that weighed 15-9. Lee Mattox and Anderson Aldag of the University of Alabama are third with 15-7, and Lucas Murphy and Nolan Hitt of Grand Valley State (Mich.) University are in fourth with 15-1.

Behind those four tandems is a knot of teams that are wedged between 14-13 on the high end (good enough for fifth place), and 10 pounds (which is good for a tie for 108th place).

With so many teams within ounces of one another, competition should be heated as anglers try to get into the Top 32 here on Cherokee Lake. That’s the number of duos that will survive the cut and move on to the final round after Friday’s competition.

In all, 146 of the 263 teams competing in the College Eastern Tour event caught limits on Thursday. Many of the anglers keyed on a trifecta of largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass and the smorgasbord helped create that logjam on the top half of the leaderboard.

Scroggins and Portch said they went “junk fishing” on Thursday. Their bite came early in the morning, long before steady rain storms moved eastward across the Volunteer State. The duo weighed three largemouth bass (the largest of which weighed 3-13); two smallmouth rounded out the bag.

“We didn’t really have a plan,” Scroggins said. “We just went out there and fished. We’ll do the same thing tomorrow.”

Tyler Craig and Spencer Lambert of the University of Louisiana at Monroe continued their torrid season on the college tour with a 14-13 limit today. The duo leads the Team of the Year point standings, and their opening catch has them in good position to remain there when this event is complete.

The Eastern Tour stop on Cherokee Lake is the third of four regular-season events for college anglers this year.

Lambert said he and Craig will continue the methods they employed on Thursday, despite the fact that rainy weather is expected to give way to sunny skies and temperatures hovering around 90 degrees on Friday.

“I don’t think anything will change,” Lambert said. “We just have to go back out and catch them again.”

Lambert and Craig weighed a 3-14 bass which gave them the lead for the Carhartt Big Bass Award. The $500 Carhartt gift card will be presented to the duo that catches the biggest bass over the course of the three-day tournament.

The full field of 263 boats will compete again on Friday. After the cut, 32 teams will fish Saturday with the winning duo taking home $2,500 for their school’s fishing team.

Friday’s launch will begin at 6:30 a.m. ET at the TVA Dam Ramps in Jefferson City. Friday’s weigh-in will be held in the same location beginning at 2:30 p.m.

EVINRUDE SUPPORTING CCA TEXAS

EVINRUDE SUPPORTING CCA TEXAS

[print_link]

Sturtevant, Wis., May 10, 2018 – Evinrude announced today that it is supporting the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) Texas through a donation of five engines.

Since Ole Evinrude invented outboard engines over 100 years ago, the Evinrude brand has been at the very forefront of innovation. As boaters have become more conscious of the impact they have on the environment, this spirit of innovation has led the brand’s drive to not only provide the best product for the application, but also for the environment. BRP the owner of the Evinrude brand, has made a significant investment in fuel emissions research culminating in the breakthrough invention of the Evinrude E-TEC G2, the cleanest combustion outboard engine in the world today. Evinrude has invested in methods to conserve water and minimize process waste through projects such as a closed-loop water system to test and validate outboard engines for which its on-site wastewater treatment system facility received an Earth Day Award from the Wisconsin Sustainable Business Council. BRP engineers collaborated with the NMMA, the ABYC, and other boat and engine manufacturers across the industry in a research program to validate the compatibility of biobutanol fuel blends with recreational marine engines and boats. Evinrude donated outboard engines to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s School of Freshwater Sciences, the only graduate program focused on the study of freshwater systems, for use on two research vessels and launched two annual BRP/Evinrude Water Research Excellence Fellowships to support tuition for graduate students conducting conservation research.

CCA Texas is a non-profit marine conservation organization comprised of tens of thousands of recreational anglers and coastal outdoor enthusiasts. Founded in 1977, CCA started in the state of Texas and has grown into a national organization. An unmatched breadth and depth of volunteer involvement has made CCA Texas the largest marine conservation group of its kind. CCA Texas has enacted positive change on all levels of coastal marine conservation and management, including a state net ban, gamefish status for speckled trout and redfish, bycatch reduction for Gulf and bay shrimp trawls, flounder conservation measures, limited entry into commercial fisheries and Gulf fisheries management initiatives.

“Evinrude is committed to creating engines that minimize boaters’ impact on the environment,” said Tracy Crocker, senior vice president and general manager, Evinrude. “We continue to innovate our direct injection technology to produce the most ecologically friendly combustion outboards on the market. We thank the volunteers and members of CCA Texas for their tireless work to protect our priceless natural resources and are committed to a long and fruitful partnership.”

The Evinrude engine line up, from 3.5 to 300 HP, offers customers superior value across a full range of applications, and are available at authorized Evinrude dealerships worldwide. Follow Evinrude on Facebook at www.facebook.com/brpevinrude.

Jointed Stickbaits: Why You Should Use Them To Target Big Bass

Jointed Stickbaits: Why You Should Use Them To Target Big Bass

[print_link]

What’s the deal with jointed stickbaits? Some lures attract more fishermen than they do fish and eventually become novelty items for lure collectors. Others catch boat loads of bass, but mass production and excessive use makes these lures less effective when bass become conditioned to them. Then there’s the lures designed for other species, which innovative anglers have converted into their secret baits for bass.

One such lure that falls into the third category is the jointed stickbait. For years anglers at Table Rock and Bull Shoals lakes remained tight-lipped about how they caught postspawn bass. Topwater lures such as Rebel Pop-Rs and Zara Spooks caught a fair amount of bass during that time, but only some of the local anglers knew the virtues of throwing a jointed stickbait for postspawn bass until the tactic was exposed in magazine articles.

Jointed Stickbaits History

The pioneers of this technique originally threw the Cotton Cordell Jointed Red Fin, a stickbait used primarily by saltwater anglers along the Gulf Coast for redfish and speckled trout. The Red Fin is still a popular choice for postspawn bass but other lure options are now available.
The Table Rock guides set up their clients with jointed stickbaits because they considered the lures to be the easiest topwater bait to work. The jointed body generates plenty of action even when retrieved slowly making it ideal for novice anglers to use. Most jointed stickbaits are equipped with split rings that allow you to tie your line directly to the lure without having to use a loop knot for increased action.

Despite being larger than a lot of topwater lures, the jointed stickbait plays more of a finesse role as a surface bait. A chugger or Zara Spook is designed to make a splash whereas the front of the jointed stickbait will make a small wake and the tail will just wobble behind it.

Conditions & Retrieves For Jointed Stickbaits

The best time to use a jointed stickbait on the surface is after bass leave the nests and migrate to main lake points where the fish school up and chase shad.

Just like other topwater lures, jointed stickbaits work best in overcast weather. The lure is also productive during the low light of morning. The lure also works better than a walking topwater bait if it’s windy. Jointed stickbaits trick some bass in stained water, but it produces best in clear water.

A slow, steady retrieve works best for this broken-back plug. Keep the lure on the surface all the time by reeling just fast enough to where the lure won’t submerge. Holding your rod tip high during the retrieve helps keep the nose of the lure up so it waddles along the surface. Most of the time you can just reel in a straight and steady fashion, but once in a while try some little twitches if you are not getting enough action out of the lure. If the wind picks up where there is a little chop on the surface try a steady shake of the rod tip to create more action.

The mood and depth of the fish will also dictate how to retrieve the jointed stickbait. Sometimes you might have to retrieve the lure at a medium pace to make the stickbait wiggle and swim 2 to 5 inches below the surface.

Jointed Stickbait Tips

Shad patterns and subtle colors work best for working jointed stickbaits on the surface. Try combinations of black back with pearl gray sides or blue or black back with chrome or white sides in most situations. If the sun is causing too much glare on the chrome lure, switch to a bait with bone-colored sides. If bass ignore these colors, try translucent shades rather than solid colors.

Strikes on the jointed lure vary from subtle swirls just under the surface to hard smashes on top. One of the big thrills about this lure, especially in clear water, is you can see the fish come up and nail it. Most of the time the strikes are subtle with bass coming up from behind the lure and just sucking it down.

Recommended Gear For Jointed Stickbaits

A 7-foot medium action casting rod with a soft tip is a necessity for making long casts with a jointed stickbait. In addition to improving casting distance, the soft tip also prevents you from pulling the lure away from the fish during the strike. A lower gear ratio reel (5.2:1 or 5.1:1) is best for this technique because it helps you retrieve the lure at a slow pace.

When fishing open water along a bluff or point, you can use line as light as 12-pound test. For most situations you can work a jointed stickbait on 14- to 15-pound test but if you are retrieving the lure over standing timber treetops or through heavy cover, you should upgrade to line as heavy as 20-pound test.

Lowrance® Anglers Sweep Top Three Spots at the Berkley Bassmaster Elite Event on Kentucky Lake

Wesley Strader Wins His First Elite Series

[print_link]
Tulsa, Okla. – Lowrance®, a world-leader in fishing electronics since 1957, mounted another commanding performance this weekend as Lowrance professional angler Wesley Strader won his first-ever Bassmaster Elite event, and the $100,000 prize. The tournament was held May 4-7 on Kentucky Lake in Paris, Tennessee.

A Spring City, Tennessee native, Strader’s winning four-day total was 80 pounds and 4 ounces. This impressive tally allowed him to slip past fellow Lowrance anglers Skeet Reese and Kelley Jaye, who took second and third place, respectively. In addition, Shaw Grigsby Jr. came in 11th, rounding out the list of Lowrance pros in the Top 12. Of the 108 competitors, 56 were finding fish with Lowrance HDS fishfinders – 52% of the field.

“I used my StructureScan® 3D side views to find drains and ditches that come out from the shoreline and key rocky areas that the shade spawn were primarily on. In this case, Lowrance lead, I followed and then we won!” said Strader.

“With the combination of sonar and mapping on my Lowrance HDS Carbon 16, I was able to see fish and locate key spots for catching my fish this week,” said Reese.

“The competitors at this level are all the best of the best,” said Leif Ottosson, CEO, Navico. “The fact that the top three anglers were all armed with Lowrance is a testament to the confidence these professionals have in our technology. We’d like to congratulate Wesley on his first Elite series win, and are excited to be an integral part in another exciting tournament.”

Berkley Bassmaster Elite Event

[print_link]

STURTEVANT, Wis., May 8, 2018– Evinrude announced today that Evinrude professional angler Wesley Strader won the Berkley Bassmaster Elite at Kentucky Lake, held May 4-7 in Paris, Tennessee.

Strader, a first-year Elite Series pro from Spring City, Tennessee, caught a final-day limit of five bass that weighed 20 pounds, 11 ounces and earned his first Elite Series victory with a four-day total of 80 pounds and 4 ounces. After the first day of fishing, Strader was in 16th place, jumping to 11th on Day 2 before taking over the lead on Day 3 with 22 pounds and six ounces — the biggest catch of Sunday’s semifinal round. His final-day catch allowed him to take home the $100,000 prize.

“This week everything just went right,” said Strader. “The first day, I had two fish by 10 o’clock and had to move up to the north to a spot I found in practice. I turned that boat around and let my Evinrude just go all out for about ten minutes. Once I got set up again, I quickly caught a six, four, and a three pound fish. I ended up just practicing for the rest of the day, because I knew I couldn’t do much better than that. That practice time made all the difference.”

“We are very excited for Wesley’s win this weekend,” said Tracy Crocker, senior vice president and general manager, Evinrude.“He’s got so much drive and his energy is contagious. We are looking forward to seeing more of him in the tournaments ahead and wish him all the best of luck.”
