BASS- The bass have finally made their push to the shallows and lots of them are spawning. By the end of the month, look for the best top water action of the season to start.

May is the month that the shad and herring will spawn, look foir them on shallow rocky points & rip rap banks. Walking top water baits like the Evergreen Custom Top Water Bait, Heddon Zara Spook and Spook Jr are great baits to imitate spawning baitfish. Soft jerkbaits are another great imitation of these spawning morsals.

CRAPPIE- Early in the month the Crappie will still be spawning, as we get to the middle of the month, they will start to push back out to deeper water for the summer. Willow grass, beaver huts, boat docks and sea walls will be holding fish during the spawn.

Fish a small minnow rigged under a slip bobber with minimal weight (just enough to keep minnow in place) or an abundance of artificial baits. Mt favorite is a 2″ Big Bite Lures Curly Tail Grub rigged on a Mizmo 1/16oz jighead in Tractor Green, Green Weenie, Back/Blue Chart Tail and Wally World.

STRIPER- The Striper have been in the uplake area for quite some time and are now pushing their way back down tro mid lake.

Early in the morning, look for them to be chasing baitfish to the surface. Broken Back Redfins are my favorite bait to catch them on. Once the feed is over, a four inch swimbait, rigged on a 1/4oz jig head will continue to catch them.

LAKE LEVEL- FULL POOL
WATER TEMPS & CLARITY
DIKE 3- 62-64 Degrees CLEAR
DOWN LAKE- 61-64 Degrees CLEAR
MID LAKE- 60-63 Degrees SLIGHT STAIN
UP LAKE-60-65 HEAVY STAIN

KING GEORGE’S HUGHES WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE SHENANDOAH DIVISION OPENER ON POTOMAC RIVER PRESENTED BY NAVIONICS

Waldorf’s Jenkins Wins Co-angler Title

[print_link]

MARBURY, Md. (April 30, 2018) – Boater Jesepth Hughes of King George, Virginia, caught five bass weighing 21 pounds, 13 ounces, Saturday to win the 2018 T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Shenandoah Division opener on the Potomac River presented by Navionics. For his victory, Hughes earned $4,948.

“I ran 15 miles south to Aquia Creek and fished two main patterns – targeting spawning fish in the mouth of Aquia and targeting prespawn fish that were moving out of the creek,” Hughes said.

“For the spawners I was just blind casting to where the beds usually are at, dragging a black and blue-colored Zoom worm. For the prespawn fish I had an area on a big flat – kind of a shell-bed hump with a few stumps. I worked that area with a ChatterBait.”

Hughes’ ChatterBait of choice was an Original Z-Man with a green-pumpkin-colored Strike King Rage Tail Craw. He said that he caught around a dozen keepers on the day – four dragging the worm, the rest on the ChatterBait.

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Jesepth Hughes, King George, Va., five bass, 21-13, $4,948

4th:         David Williams, Fredericksburg, Va., five bass, 17-3, $627

5th:         Billy Brown, Dahlgren, Va., five bass, 16-11, $495

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Mario DePiero of Gaston, Ore., won a trip to fish with reigning Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year in the Bassmaster Fish With Brandon Palaniuk Sweepstakes. He also scored a new Skeeter ZX190 with a Yamaha VF150LA outboard with the win. The total prize pack is worth more than $57,000.

“Aside from family and friends, fishing definitely falls next for me,” DePiero said. “I was in disbelief when I realized I won the sweepstakes. I was in the market for a used bass boat when I found out I was the winner.”

DePiero will take a trip to a to-be-determined fishery in the United States with Palaniuk. The prize includes round-trip airfare for one, two nights/three days of hotel accommodations, a rental car for the duration of the trip and $500 spending money.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance. I can’t wait to meet Brandon and get on the water with him. When I found out I won, I started looking him up on YouTube, and he seems like such a cool guy. From what I’ve seen, he’s a swimbait enthusiast — definitely something I’m looking forward to getting some insight on.”

When DePiero was young, he convinced his father to cosign on a Skeeter boat for him. His father joked that he would have to “pull it behind his bike.” But since that day, bass fishing has become a passion that he cannot wait to share with his own children.

“I’m ready to be on the water with my family in the new boat,” he said. “I can’t wait to introduce my kids to bass fishing and watch them get excited about catching big bass.”

DePiero’s prizes also include a Humminbird Solix 10 MEGA SI GPS and Minn Kota Talon, a set of four Dick Cepek all-terrain tires, a Volant Performance air intake and exhaust package, three Alpha Angler rods, two Daiwa Tatula reels, a GoPro Hero6 Black, a HUK Next Level All Weather jacket and bib, a $500 Cabela’s gift card, one Cabela’s X-900 Pure Lead AGM battery, and prize packs from Bass Mafia and Seaguar.

DePiero was selected out of 905,000 entries. He may be nearly one-in-a-million to win, but he feels it was meant to be and that the prize pack was “made for him.”

Fans will have another chance to win an awesome prize very soon through the Bassmaster Fish with Randy Howell Sweepstakes with a grand-prize value of $30,000. The sweepstakes runs through Tuesday, July 31.

CUBA’S BECHTEL WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE OZARK DIVISION EVENT ON LAKE OF THE OZARKS

CUBA’S BECHTEL WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE OZARK DIVISION EVENT ON LAKE OF THE OZARKS

Springfield’s Lloyd Wins Co-angler Title

[print_link]

OSAGE BEACH, Mo. (April 30, 2018) – Boater Zach Bechtel of Cuba, Missouri, brought a five-bass limit to the scale weighing 21 pounds, 7 ounces to win the 2018 T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Ozark Division event on Lake of the Ozarks. For his win, Bechtel earned the first place prize of $5,020 plus a $2,000 Ranger Cup contingency bonus.

“I had been fishing in a few local tournaments over the past few weeks and had been catching a lot of fish,” said Bechtel. “But, when I went out on Friday to practice for this event, the fish were gone. I looked and looked and I couldn’t find them anywhere. I knew I was in trouble.

Saturday, I woke up without a real plan and just decided to go fishing,” Bechtel said. “Everyone else kept saying that the fish had moved shallow to spawn, but I decided that I was going to fish in areas where I believed the fish were still staging. On my first spot I caught a 4½- and a 5-pounder and I just dialed it in from there.”

Bechtel said that he fished around 20 different points through the day with a ¾-ounce silver and red-colored War Eagle spinnerbait with a smoke shad-colored Keitech Fat Impact swimbait on it. He estimated that he caught 10 or 11 keepers throughout the day.

MILTON’S LEIDHOLDT WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE GREAT LAKES DIVISION OPENER ON MISSISSIPPI RIVER PRESENTED BY NAVIONICS

Illinois’ Howard Wins Co-angler Title

[print_link]

LA CROSSE, Wis. (April 30, 2018) – Boater Rob Leidholdt of Milton, Wisconsin, caught five bass weighing 17 pounds, 11 ounces, Saturday to win the 2018 T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Great Lakes Division opener on the Mississippi River presented by Navionics. Leidholdt earned $5,046 for his victory.

“I stayed in Pool No. 8 all day, throwing a spinnerbait all day long on a shallow flat near Stoddard,” said Leidholdt, who earned his first career win in FLW competition. “There were around 15 boats fishing the same flat, but I was fishing slower than most of them. I caught around 10 fish all day long.”

Leidholdt’s spinnerbait of choice was a Spot Remover-colored War Eagle Finesse Spinnerbait with a white Zoom Swimmer Paddle Tail swimbait.

“I think only having one day to practice actually really helped me,” Leidholdt said. “The river has had so much water fluctuation in the past few weeks, so even if I would have had time to practice it likely would have been very different come tournament time.

“It’s the first time in a long time that I can remember that I put the jig down and picked up the spinnerbait,” Leidholdt joked. “I’ve been fishing BFL tournaments for 15 years, so I definitely put my time in to earn the win.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Rob Leidholdt, Milton, Wis., five bass, 17-11, $5,046

2nd:         Michael Hanrahan, Pleasant Hill, Iowa, five bass, 16-15, $2,523

Bill McBride of Rockford, Illinois, caught the largest bass in the Co-angler Division – a 5-pound, 12-ounce fish. The catch earned him the day’s Co-angler Big Bass award of $385.

The T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Great Lakes Division opener on the Mississippi River presented by Navionics was hosted by the La Crosse County Convention & Visitors Bureau.

The top 45 boaters and co-anglers in the region based on point standings, along with the five winners in each qualifying event, will be entered in the Oct. 25-27 BFL Regional Championship on Lake of the Ozarks in Osage Beach, Missouri. Boaters will compete for a top award of a Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude outboard and $20,000, while co-anglers will fish for a new Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude outboard.

The 2018 BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 128 tournaments throughout the season, five qualifying events in each division. The top 45 boaters and co-anglers from each division, along with the five winners of the qualifying events, will advance to one of six regional tournaments where they are competing to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American. The 2018 BFL All-American will be held May 31-June 2 at Cross Lake in Shreveport, Louisiana, and is hosted by the Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission. Top performers in the BFL can move up to the Costa FLW Series or even the FLW Tour.

10 Things You’ll Wish You Had in a Fishing Tournament By Grant Kelly W2Fish

These essential items are easy to forget at home, so this checklist will help you stay prepared for your upcoming bass fishing tournaments.

I’m one of the most forgetful people you’ll ever meet—especially when it comes to fishing tournaments. I’ll get so caught up in the small details like rigging tackle, that I’ll completely overlook the most important pieces of equipment. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had that “oh, crap” feeling at the boat ramp or after catching my first keeper of the day, when I realize that I’ve forgotten something at the house.

Some of this checklist is funny, but by gosh, all of it is true. Make sure to run down this checklist before your next bass fishing tournament.

LIVETARGET’s award-winning Sunfish Hollow Body is a true show-stopper

Sunfish on Top, Anyone?

LIVETARGET’s award-winning Sunfish Hollow Body is a true show-stopper

Niagara-On-The-Lake, ON (April 30, 2018) – Innovations in hollow body topwater lures have expanded this once narrowly-applied presentation into a productive technique for both fresh- and saltwater species. Advanced soft plastic bodies engineered to exclude water and collapse readily when attacked, customized hooks that shed weeds while still piercing mouths, and intricate anatomical details that provide true-to-life realism, have all contributed to the explosion in the popularity, and effectiveness, of hollow body topwaters.

Once the exclusive domain of frog imitations, hollow body topwater profiles have diversified dramatically in recent years, resulting in surface eruptions from marauding fish that have never feasted on amphibians. LIVETARGET, the leader in anatomically-accurate, ultra-realistic artificial lures, has crafted four unique hollow body topwaters that have garnered ICAST New Product Showcase trophies since 2010, including a far-from-traditional frog, a unique mouse, a saltwater mullet bait, and their show-stopping Sunfish Hollow Body.

“Without a shadow of a doubt, sunfish are a major forage base for predator bass,” noted LIVETARGET pro angler Dave Mercer, host of “Dave Mercer’s Facts of Fishing” on the Outdoor Channel and WFN. “You’ll find bluegill and sunfish around every pad bed, every dock, every piece of structure – and the LIVETARGET Sunfish Hollow Body perfectly imitates what they look like and how they behave.”

Indeed, the LIVETARGET Sunfish Hollow Body expertly replicates the profile of a small, stunned sunfish that is struggling helplessly on the surface. Bristling with true-to-life, three-dimensional anatomical features including fins, tail, gill opercles and eyes, the LIVETARGET Sunfish Hollow Body puts wary bass at ease, casting the perfect illusion of a living, vulnerable sunfish that is about to meet its demise.

With ten distinct color patterns to choose from, you’ll be able to easily select the LIVETARGET Sunfish Hollow Body that exactly mimics your local forage base, whether you battle bass in the pine-studded northland, the cypress swamps of the deep south, or any of the fin-infested waters in-between.

“There are so many different ways and subtle nuances with this bait, and how you can work it, to effectively catch fish,” remarked Mercer. “Of course you’ve got your standard retrieve over pads. You’ll be able to work through the greenery without getting hung up because of the bait’s intricate, well-balanced design. Its custom Trokar hook rides high and dry, and is further protected from the slop by the lure’s 3D pectoral and pelvic fins. What a great concept for triggering bites AND for making the bait even more weedless!”

Mercer explains that the LIVETARGET Sunfish Hollow Body shines when it leaves the salad bar. “The real magic happens in the open water. If I want to pop it really slow, the LIVETARGET Sunfish Hollow Body executes a perfect, wide, side-to-side walk. And get this – when I pop the bait, it actually dives down subsurface just a bit, and then rolls back to the top. That up and down motion creates a long-lasting bubble trail on the surface, helping nearby fish to locate the source of all the commotion. This unique dive-and-rise cycle helps bass to see a LOT more of this bait than they do with more conventional topwaters, allowing the realism and the artistry of the LIVETARGET Sunfish Hollow Body to seal the deal.

“Truly, this is the first hollow body topwater lure that I have as much confidence in the open water as I do in the weeds.”

Precisely weighted for long casts, weedless presentations and effective hooksets, the LIVETARGET Sunfish Hollow Body is in a class of its own. When combined with other LIVETARGET hollow body topwaters, like the Frog and the Mouse, anglers truly have a library of actions, patterns and profiles to tempt bass, pike, and other freshwater apex predators into aggressively feeding up on top.

Find the Sunfish Hollow Body now at your favorite retailer, in three lengths, weights, and a full spectrum of ten ultra-realistic color patterns, with MSRP $14.49 – $15.49.
