FLORENCE, Ala. — Adrian College’s Nick Marsh and Jarrod Layton rode a wave of shallow largemouth to victory at Pickwick Lake in the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Southern Tour presented by Bass Pro Shops with a three-day total of 58 pounds, 11 ounces.

After catching over 20 pounds on both Thursday and Friday, the duo from Michigan managed 17-8 during Saturday’s final round to notch the victory by a 5-6 margin over West Virginia University’s Nolan Minor and Casey Lanier.

Although they believed their pattern was dying due to the falling water, Marsh and Layton made a slight adjustment and brought in another solid bag of largemouth to sail away with the win.

“We had a few key bites on Friday around cypress trees,” Marsh said. “We knew the water would continue to drop and the fish would completely leave the buckbrush and eventually the cypress trees. We shifted to cypress trees and the middle of the pockets. The water cleared up, and we eventually started seeing big largemouth laying in the mud trying to spawn.”

They used a one-two punch of flipping a jig at isolated cover and throwing a spinnerbait in the gaps as they covered water. Their key bait was a 1/2-ounce black and blue jig with subtle trailers like a Reaction Innovations Sweet Beaver. The spinnerbait size was key as Marsh and Layton threw a heavy 3/4-ounce model with a bigger blade than what comes stock.

“A lot of anglers like to throw a lighter spinnerbait when you’re in 2 feet of water or less, but I felt a bigger one would help coax those bigger fish around the trees and brush,” Marsh said. “I changed those blades to bigger sizes, so it would produce more thump and it also allowed me to fish it slower through the cover.”

Each day the Adrian College teammates would catch one big smallmouth at Wilson Dam to help anchor their bag. But that didn’t pan out Saturday as the fishing near the dam was tougher, so they bailed and relied solely on largemouth.

Minor and Lanier steadily moved up each day of competition as they went from 22nd place on Thursday to third on Friday and eventually settled in the runner-up position. They shared water and often saw the winners from Adrian College, but they also found a way to catch smallmouth without competing at the dam.

After three days, their 53-5 three-day total consisted of largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass.

“We had two areas very close in proximity,” Minor said. “We would start on a main river current seam and catch our limit in the first two hours and then we would fish shallow cover for largemouth and some spotted bass the rest of the day.”

Their smallmouth area was taken over by spotted bass on Championship Saturday, but they were solid bass. They managed a limit in the first hour but never could upgrade shallow because of heavy boat traffic in the shallow sloughs they had been fishing.

“We fished current seams with a Ned Rig and then flipped shallow bushes with a Texas-rigged Missile Baits D Bomb,” Minor said. “Alabama has treated us great over the first two years of college fishing. Bass act the same for the most part all over the country, but these lakes have some big and beautiful fish.”

The biggest jump on the final day came from Joe McClosky and John Austin-Welch of Bethel University who moved from 19th to third after catching 21-11 on Saturday. They fished deeper than most teams this week hoping to find places that reloaded with fish. They did so and qualified for their first Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops in their first Bassmaster College Series event.

Matthew Cross and Mekiah Jack of Middle Tennessee State University took home the Big Bass Award for catching an 8-2 largemouth on Thursday.

The Top 5 teams also received Abu Garcia Veritas rods and Abu Garcia Revo reels for outlasting the record-setting, 266-boat field.

With the conclusion of the Southern Tour event on Pickwick, there are two remaining Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Tour events left, with the next coming at Cherokee Lake in Tennessee and the finale at Clear Lake in California, both in the month of May.

The Top 38 teams qualified for the National Championship, which is at Lake Tenkiller, Oklahoma, on July 19-21, 2018.

Marsh And Layton Take The Lead At Bassmaster College Event On Pickwick

Marsh And Layton Take The Lead At Bassmaster College Event On Pickwick

[print_link]

FLORENCE, Ala. — Adrian College’s Nick Marsh and Jarrod Layton landed five bass that weighed 20 pounds Friday and jumped to the top of the leaderboard with a two-day weight of 41 pounds, 3 ounces at the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Southern Tour event presented by Bass Pro Shops at Pickwick Lake.

Marsh and Layton caught 21-3 during Thursday’s opening round — and they have been the only team to top the 20-pound mark on both days of competition. Their Friday catch included four largemouth and one smallmouth.

The current flow on the Tennessee River has been sporadic during the past week — and as a result, the duo from Michigan found less water in their shallow areas Friday. But that didn’t hurt their bite.

“The water was at least lower by a foot or so today,” Marsh said. “When practice started we couldn’t see flowers on the bushes and now they are completely out of the water.”

Although the cold morning and lowering water seemed to work against their game plan, they will take a 3-ounce lead going into Saturday’s final round. Marsh and Layton said they have a backup plan if their main strategy from the first two days falls to pieces.

Whether it’s been late in the day or early in the morning, one of their key fish each day has come from the crowded area below Wilson Dam.

Bethel University’s John Garrett and Brian Pahl, who led after Day 1, dropped to second after landing 18-4 on Friday. The lower weight didn’t shake their confidence, though, because they knew 18 pounds on Day 2 would keep them around that 20-pound daily average they believed they would need to win.

“We had our limit at 1:15 this afternoon,” Pahl said. “It was very slow for us, but we upgraded twice later in the day and it bumped us up big time.

“The current flow changed this afternoon and they began closing off some of the gates at Wilson Dam,” Garrett said. “With less water flowing down the fishing normally gets better, so we are excited for Saturday. But you never know with fishing.”

West Virginia’s Nolan Minor and Casey Lanier moved up from 22nd place to third after catching 21-2 — the field’s biggest catch during Friday’s round. They, too, had a mixture of largemouth and smallmouth that contributed to their 38-12 total. But they could be impacted by the falling water in their shallow areas.

Matthew Cross and Mekiah Jack of Middle Tennessee State University are in fourth with 36-6, and Tyler Craig and Spencer Lambert of the University of Louisiana at Monroe are fifth with 35-15.

Only the Top 32 teams will fish on Championship Saturday. But with six teams double-qualifying for the National Championship in the Top 32, the qualification cut was bumped to 38th place. That gives Chris Walter and Jacob Gress of Indiana University the final qualifying spot with 26-7.

Saturday’s takeoff begins at 7 a.m. CT at McFarland Park in Florence, and the weigh-in will take place on the University of North Alabama’s campus at 3:30 p.m.

Horne Stays On Top At Bassmaster Central Open On The Arkansas River

MUSKOGEE, Okla. — When Harvey Horne received a text message Thursday evening notifying him he would be paired with co-angler Jeff Wallace of West Monroe, La., he knew Friday was going to be a good day at the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open on the Arkansas River.

“We have known each other since kindergarten,” Horne said. “We played football and baseball and other stuff together.”

Horne said he and Wallace “kind of lost touch” when they grew older, and Friday was the first time they had ever fished together. The day went well for Horne, as he caught a 17-pound, 7-ounce limit to retain first place in the pro division with a two-day mark of 33-15.

“We absolutely had a ball,” said Horne, who resides in Bella Vista, Ark. “We got to have fun today and from what I have been hearing, a lot of people aren’t having fun. On a day like today when you go have fun catching some great fish and hanging out with a great person like him, it’s a good time.”

The part-time bait shop employee stuck to the game plan that produced a 16-8 limit Thursday. “I went to the same areas and Jeff caught his limit pretty quick,” said Horne, who completed his limit around 10 a.m. “There are still more fish in the area and more are coming to me, so that is what I am looking forward to tomorrow.”

Horne noticed there were fewer boats in his area Friday. “I am in really good shape as far as that goes,” he said. “I just have to stick with it and catch five big ones tomorrow.”

After two days of sunshine and wind, wet weather is predicted for Saturday’s final round — and Horne said he is unsure how the weather will affect one of his spots. But he has another area he believes should be “pretty solid” because it is protected from the wind and the water is “different” than anywhere else he has fished. He would not divulge how the water was different.

Justin Margraves of Diana, Texas, moved into second place in the pro division with 31-5 by catching an 18-2 limit Friday. The 35-year-old Lake Fork guide also noticed more bass are moving into his area to spawn.

“I went to the exact same areas and fished the exact same baits as yesterday, but happened to get a couple of better bites today,” he said.

Margraves said he is running about 80 miles round-trip each day. “I am fortunate I’ve only got a couple of guys around me, and I am fishing a big area,” he said.

David Gillham of Heath, Texas, is in third place in the pro division with 30-9, followed by Dustin Reneau, of Mckinney, Texas with 29-13 and Derek Hudnall of Baton Rouge, La, with 29-11.

Texas angler Joe Lee caught a three-bass limit weighing to 7-6 to take over the lead in the co-angler division with a two-day total of 17-7. The 54-year-old industrial water purification salesman has been fishing a favorite technique both days. “I love flipping and we flipped a lot the last two days,” he said. “That is how I caught most of my fish.”

Hudnall has taken over the lead in the pro division for the Phoenix Boats Big Bass Award with a 6-3 largemouth. The leader in the co-angler division is Colton Wood of Panhandle, Texas, with a 5-9 largemouth.

The Greater Muskogee Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting the event. Saturday’s launch will be held at Three Forks Harbor at 5201 Three Forks Road. The weigh-in will move to the Bass Pro Shops, 101 Bass Pro Drive, in Broken Arrow and will begin at 3:30 p.m. CT.

‘Powerful Opposition’ Kills Public Access Reform In Louisiana, Conservation Leaders Note

‘Powerful Opposition’ Kills Public Access Reform In Louisiana, Conservation Leaders Note

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A bill that would have restored anglers’ rights to access public waters in Louisiana was voted down in the state legislature this week by a vote of 37-59.

Proponents of House Bill 391, including B.A.S.S., the Louisiana B.A.S.S. Nation and the Louisiana Sportsmen’s Coalition (LaSC), were disappointed but not surprised at the loss, said Gene Gilliland, national conservation director for B.A.S.S.

“Everyone knew going in that this was likely to be a contentious issue and that it might take several years to find a good fix,” he explained. “When the vote came to the full House of Representatives, wealthy landowners and energy companies with deep pockets and armies of lobbyists persuaded legislators from many parts of Louisiana that are not even affected by this issue to vote against the bill.”

Gilliland said the bill’s author, Rep. Kevin Pearson (R., Slidell), told him his bill was perhaps the most talked about piece of legislation in this session, and although it was voted down, it raised awareness of the problem statewide.

HB 391 would have restricted the ability of private landowners to prohibit boater access to navigable waters flowing over or through their lands. Almost alone among the 50 states, Louisiana permits private property owners in tidewater areas to bar public access to those waters and to do so without posting them against trespassing.

“Almost everywhere else, the law says that, ‘If you can float it, you can boat it,’” Gilliland pointed out.

“Louisiana is one of the only states in the nation where you can be traveling by boat on public, navigable waterways, and suddenly with no warning find that you are not,” according to the LaSC. “As a result, families out for a day of fun have been subjected to armed challenges from guards hired by big landowners and told to leave the unmarked, seemingly open water.”

Because of the inconsistencies in access, B.A.S.S. announced last year that it would no longer conduct professional bass tournaments in Louisiana’s tidal regions, including the Louisiana Delta, which has hosted four Bassmaster Classics, and others where public access is being increasingly restricted. In the upcoming Bassmaster Elite at the Sabine River out of Orange, Texas, competitors have been told they cannot fish in Louisiana waters.

Gilliland said Pearson made it clear that B.A.S.S.’s decision to stay away from Louisiana until this issue is resolved played a major role in raising awareness among the public and his fellow legislators.

“Although the bill is dead for this year, Rep. Pearson is fully committed to making a run at this issue again next year,” Gilliland said. “We hope that prior to next year’s session there will be meetings of all the concerned stakeholders, including B.A.S.S. and the Louisiana B.A.S.S. Nation.

“We want to build a consensus on how public access to the waters of Louisiana can be preserved for recreation and commerce, while respecting landowners’ rights.”

The LaSC said in a statement this week that it is encouraged by the fact that 37 state representatives voted for the reform despite “powerful opposition” and little time to prepare for a legislative push.

It added, “This was always going to be a multi-year fight, and we are optimistic that the progress made in this year’s legislative session has moved up the expected timeline.”

3 Topwater Baits You Can Throw Around The Spawn – MTB

3 Topwater Baits You Can Throw Around The Spawn

[print_link]

When the bass spawn is fully on, most bass become lethargic and finicky. The spawn wears largemouths down, and if you want to catch them, you’ll have to adjust. During the spawn, or just after the spawn, when bass are still in the shallows and around vegetation or shallow cover, a subtle topwater can be just what you need to get yourself a bite. Here are 3 types of topwaters you can use to fish the spawn and post spawn.

Pencil Popper

duo realis pencil popper

Source: Scout

Half popper, half walker…half spook. The pencil popper is a slim walking bait with a slightly cupped mouth, and a “walk the dog” action. These baits are subtle in their action and fun to fish. Mixing up the cadence on these is sure to eventually trigger a strike around the shallows.

Prop Bait

bagley topwater bait

When bass are a bit more easily spooked in shallow water, whether they are hiding under vegetation or around cover, a prop bait is a great choice. They have a little more weight so you can cast them across your target and wind them back, and their bubbly trail will call bass in for a peek. When bluegill are spawning, they often fan their nest to oxygenate their eggs, causing a subtle commotion much like a prop bait gives off. Imitate these bluegill with a prop bait like the Bagley Sunny B Twin Spin to catch bass around the spawn.

Downsized Popper

topwater spawn baits kraken popper

Your standard popper causes a huge ruckus at the top, but a downsized little popper gives off just the right sized bubble trail for a spawning bass to strike. A looonnnggg pause (around 5 seconds) after pops has a great affect around the spawn. It truly shines in clear, calm conditions. Don’t forget to wait a few seconds before you set the hook, bass around the spawn cycle are more likely to hit this with a slight slurp than they are with a bursting explosion. Pausing will ensure you don’t rip the hook from the mouth too soon.

Bethel University Team Takes Lead In Bassmaster College Bass Tournament

Bethel University Team Takes Lead In Bassmaster College Bass Tournament

[print_link]

FLORENCE, Ala. — A record-setting field of college anglers hit the Tennessee River at Pickwick Lake for the three-day Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Southern Tour event presented by Bass Pro Shops today.

When the dust settled, John Garrett and Brian Pahl of Bethel University took the top spot after the first round of competition with 22 pounds, 12 ounces of smallmouth bass. They lead the field of 266 teams into Friday’s important cut-day.

Anglers had to contend with cold and windy, weather. Temperatures were in the low 40s at the launch site at McFarland Park, presenting slow fishing early in the day. Most teams had to decide between two predominant patterns that had excelled during the practice period on Pickwick.

Quickly it became a battle between the bass fishing teams that focused on smallmouth bass at the base of the Wilson Dam and those anglers who focused on largemouth around bushes and shallow cover elsewhere on the lake.

Bethel’s Garrett and Pahl concentrated their efforts on smallmouth, even with a hefty crowd of anglers in that region of the lake.

“Everything happened a lot faster than we expected today,” Garrett said. “We had a later boat number, but we were able to pull in exactly where we wanted to, and we caught all of our weight before 10:30 a.m.

Their five-bass limit was anchored by a hefty smallmouth that tipped the scales at 6-plus pounds. They landed that fish with 10 boats nearby, but that wasn’t anything different than they expected because the tailrace area had seen heavy fishing pressure all week.

“We could go out and catch two fish tomorrow and someone beside us could catch them like we did today,” Pahl said. “It’s not necessarily luck, but there are so many quality fish in the area, and a slight change in current could reposition them completely differently.”

Garrett and Pahl have a storied history together as they finished second in the 2016 Bassmaster College Series National Championship. Garrett later won the Classic Bracket. Then in 2017, the duo finished fourth and fished in the Classic Bracket once again. The one thing they haven’t accomplished is a major Bassmaster win together. After narrowly missing out a few times, they’d like to accomplish that, since they already qualified via the Central Tour event at Toledo Bend in January.

Right behind Garrett and Pahl is the Murray State University duo of Harbor Lovin and Evan Bramhill, who boasted 22-8 after Thursday’s action.

“We stumbled on these fish on the final day of practice,” Bramhill said. “We had all our weight by 9:30 to 10 a.m. and then went looking for new places  but never really found anything better.”

The freshmen duo is only 4 ounces off the pace set by Garrett and Pahl and are feeling confident as they brought a 6-11 largemouth to the scales. Their 22-8 also included a fish less than 2 pounds that they couldn’t cull the rest of the day. They know there is plenty of opportunity for a heavier catch Friday. Unlike the leaders, they targeted largemouth solely, but they, too, had a lot of company in their area.

“We fished behind other teams and caught fish behind them,” Lovin said. “It made us more confident, but we plan to start our day on our key stretch tomorrow and see if we can catch a few quality fish.”

The Big Bass of the event so far is an 8-2 largemouth caught by Middle Tennessee State University’s Mekiah Jack and Matthew Cross. Their giant catches helped them mightily and it anchored their 21-3 total, which has them tied for third with Adrian College’s Nick Marsh and Jarrod Layton. Rounding out the Top 5 is Ryan Nevil and Nathan Wood of Dallas Baptist University with 20-15.

Fishing is excellent despite the weather. Eight teams caught limits weighing more than 20 pounds in the opening frame of competition on Pickwick, and the 32nd place cut-weight for the National Championship qualification is 16-7, which is held by Polk State’s Justin Bun and Evan Wieber.

Friday’s takeoff begins at 7 a.m. CT at McFarland Park in Florence (110 W College St.) and weigh-in will take place at the same location starting at 3 p.m. CT.
