Harvey Horne Takes First-Round Lead In Bassmaster Open On The Arkansas River

MUSKOGEE, Okla. — Thinking ahead has put Harvey Horne ahead of the pack in the second Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open on the Arkansas River.

“I am doing something a little bit different than everybody else is doing because I am not seeing anybody around where I am fishing,” Horne said. “When I showed up here for practice, I was mainly looking for places where the fish were going and not where the fish were.”

The Bella Vista, Ark., angler was hoping warm weather would move into the area he was fishing so that his plan of anticipating where bass would be moving in to spawn would work. His plan worked to perfection today as he weighed in a five-bass limit of 16 pounds, 8 ounces to move into the pro division lead.

The 42-year-old, part-time bait shop employee said he had a “terrible” practice. “I came over here four or five times the last month or so and in those combined times I think I caught about five keepers,” Horne said. Today he keyed in on places where he thought bass would be moving in to spawn rather than where the fish were at the time he prefished.

Horne started in an area this morning that he found Wednesday, the final day of practice. “I rolled in there this morning and within 15 minutes I had a limit,” he said.

After catching his limit, he left the spot and decided to go to a completely new area, where he culled three fish. Horne estimated he had about 10 bites overall and caught nine keepers and one bass under the limit. He believes the fish he is targeting are bass getting ready to spawn.

“They are in that phase and looking for a place to spawn,” he said. “The water temperature is rising; we found 58- to 59-degree water today.”

Despite encountering heavy fishing pressure in his spots, Billy Smith Sr. was able to catch a 16-1 limit to move into second place. “Just about every hole I had was getting a lot of pressure,” he said. “I don’t know what it is going to do to the fish tomorrow.”

The 58-year-old electronics salesman for a gas company said he started in one of the places he did well in practice. “That wasn’t my honey hole,” he said. “I didn’t even go to my best spot today.”

The Willis, Texas, angler thinks he will have to go to his best spot to start Friday, though, because he believes his other spots “got trashed” by the fishing pressure today.

Other anglers placing in the Top 5 of the pro division are Eric Gilchrist, Plaquemine, La., third place, 15-15; Dustin Reneau, McKinney, Texas, fourth, 15-12; and Greg Vance, Dubuque, Iowa, fifth, 15-11.

Former Lake of the Ozarks guide, Walter Tucker, took over the lead in the co-angler division with a three-bass limit weighing 12-2. The 63-year-old Osceola, Mo., angler had never fished the Arkansas River before. Fortunately, he was paired with local favorite Chris Jones, who put him on some quality fish. Tuckers said he was culling 3-pounders by the end of the day. “If I had weighed my five best ones in, I would be leading the pro division,” he said.

Dustin Reneau leads in the pro division of the Phoenix Boats Big Bass Award with a 5-pound, 13-ounce largemouth. The leader in the co-angler division of the Phoenix Boats Big Bass Award is Colton Wood with a 5-9 largemouth.

Hosting this event is the Greater Muskogee Area Chamber of Commerce. Friday’s launch, weigh-in and the final day launch will be held at the Three Forks Harbor at 5201 Three Forks Road. Saturday’s weigh-in will shift to the Bass Pro Shops at 101 Bass Pro Drive in Broken Arrow.

Bassmaster Elite Series To Visit Grand Lake O’ The Cherokees At Prime Fishing Time

GROVE, Okla. — The world’s top 109 bass anglers will go toe-to-toe for the second stop of the season at the 2018 Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Elite at Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees, April 26-29.

The Grand Lake derby was originally scheduled to be the third regular-season event, but torrential rainfall and flooding postponed the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Elite at Sabine River presented by Econo Lodge in Orange, Texas, previously scheduled to occur April 6-9. The event is now slated for June 7-10.

The last time B.A.S.S. visited the picturesque Grand Lake was at the 2016 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods. At that event, native Oklahoman Edwin Evers weighed a three-day total of 60 pounds, 7 ounces to top the field and claim the world championship title.

Evers is looking forward to fishing Grand Lake again.

“I have a lot of fond memories from that lake, especially winning the Classic in 2016,” he said. “I’m comfortable with how it fishes throughout the year, and I expect this tournament to be very exciting with lots of big fish brought to the scales.”

Considering the time of year, and the quality of anglers competing in this event, Evers expects numbers of 20-plus-pound bags to be brought to the scales daily.

“The Midwest has endured the fifth coldest spring on record, and the late spring has the bass just itching to get up shallow and start spawning,” Evers said. “I think the bass will be in all phases of the spawning process, allowing for quite a few different techniques to be effective. But I believe the biggest fish will be shallow, and that makes for a very competitive tournament.”

Each angler can weigh his five largest bass each day for a shot at the $100,000 top prize, and Evers said a winning four-day total could exceed the 80-pound mark.

“My best fish at the Classic in 2016 was over 6 pounds, but it was earlier in the year,” he said. “This time I bet we see a big bass over 8 pounds. That’s an exciting fish to bring to the scales no matter where you are in the country.

“This is the absolute best week of the year to be fishing on Grand Lake, and I think the fans and spectators are in for a real treat each afternoon at weigh-in,” he said. “With the unpredictable spring weather this year, the lake conditions could change day to day, and the angler who figures out how to adapt with the changes as they occur will be the angler who could win the event.”

After two days of full-field competition, the Top 51 anglers will qualify to fish the semi-final round on Saturday. The field will then be cut again to the Top 12 on Sunday’s championship round.

Daily takeoffs will begin each morning at 6:15 a.m. CT out of Wolf Creek Park in Grove, Okla. Weigh-ins will happen in the same location beginning at 3 p.m. each afternoon.

The Bassmaster Elite Series Outdoors Expo will take place at the park on Saturday and Sunday beginning at noon. The event will feature demo rides, an aquarium, free prizes and the latest fishing products on the market. The fan-favorite kid’s area, Toyota Get Hooked on Fishing presented by Shakespeare, will also include catfish-casting ponds and a chance to meet the pros.

All activities are free and open to the public. For more information, visit Bassmaster.com.

Have You Tried Fishing Tournament Takeoff Sites For Bass? MTB

[print_link]

Fishing close to a tournament takeoff area has its advantages.

If the takeoff site has several tournaments held there each week, it has more relocated bass in that area.  Release boats have helped distribute bass better during larger tournaments, but a lot of bass clubs and smaller events still release a lot of fish at the access areas.

Fishing close to a popular tournament access offers more advantages when fishing larger reservoirs. If you locate bass close you can avoid making long runs and getting stuck on the water during boat breakdowns or if severe weather occurs.

During tough fishing conditions, you also have an advantage finding spots near the takeoff area because you don’t have to run all over a lake to find bass. Plus, the more time you’ve got your line in the water the better.  You can maximize your fishing time and sometimes save as much as an extra hour of fishing time if you target released bass at a takeoff site.

Having more than one spot close to the takeoffs helps your odds.  If you can find two or three spots within a half mile or mile of the takeoff area, sometimes you can make a little milk run out of those places.

Increased boat traffic near tournament takeoff sites can make it uncomfortable to fish, but it doesn’t usually affect bass there.  Certain times of the year the wave action from all the boat traffic can work to your advantage because the waves force shad up to the surface and bass start feeding when the baitfish start moving.

In many instances there is actually less fishing pressure around takeoff sites because many tournament anglers have a tendency to run 10 miles away from the takeoff area before they start fishing.  So there is a lot of obvious good spots close by the ramp that area overlooked. The only fishing pressure the takeoff site gets is in the afternoon from guys who are running in from farther up or down lake and they only have about 10 more minutes to fish.  So it looks like a takeoff area is getting a lot of fishing pressure, but it’s actually only getting pressure for the last 30 minutes of a tournament.

Staying close to tournament takeoff sites could be your short cut to finding bass if you can determine which sites are the most popular.

Catch early-season bass on bright, crayfish-patterned Rapala® DT®-4’s Posted on April 17, 2018 by Rapala

[print_link]

Bass fishing this spring on a lake, river or reservoir with little vegetation and lots of rock and wood? Don’t leave the dock without rods rigged with bright, crayfish-pattern Rapala® DT®-4 crankbaits. And as the water warms, don’t be afraid to burn those babys back to the boat.

“If you’ve got rock and wood, go with a DT-4,” says 2017 Bassmaster Angler of the Year Brandon Palaniuk.

The DT-4 has been Palaniuk’s “number-one bait” since he was nine or 10 years old, he says. He starts catching bass on DT-4’s when early-season water temps are in the 45 to 49-degree range. Water temps in thousands of lakes and rivers in the Midwest, Mountain West and North East will be in that range soon – some already are. As soon as weather, safety and state regulations allow, bass anglers should start fishing DT-4’s.

“It’s one of my favorite ways to catch fish in the spring,” says Palaniuk, an Idaho native.

Tennessee pro Ott DeFoe favors DT-4’s for early-season bass as well. And as the water warms, he fishes them faster.

“It will surprise people how fast I will fish a DT when water temps get to be 54, 55, 56,” says DeFoe, Bassmaster’s 2011 Rookie of the Year. “It’s more about creating a reaction strike. Those bass are ready to feed – they’re hungry. So if you bring something by them at Mach 1, you’re more likely to get a fish to totally eat the bait than just to nip at it.”

“DT” stands for “dives to.” Built of balsa wood, Rapala’s signature material, a DT-4 will get down to its maximum depth of four feet sooner than – and thus stay in the strike zone longer than – any other shallow-running crankbait on the market. The way its balsa body wobbles while swimming and digging its bill into the bottom make it the perfect tool for triggering bites from shallow, early-season bass on waterbodies with little to no vegetation.

“When the water’s cold, balsa’s gonna whoop your butt about anywhere you go,” says Alabama pro Gerald Swindle, noting in his own, inimitable way that anglers fishing balsa baits like the DT-4 in cold water will almost always out-catch those who aren’t.

“That’s just how it is,” says Swindle, a two-time Bassmaster Angler of the Year. “It’s just got the right wiggle.”

Swimming with a side-to-side action only balsa baits can achieve, DT-4’s can also back out of shallow cover better than copycats, floating up and minimizing snags.

“DT’s are sort of a combo of a Shad Rap and a traditional wider-wobble crankbait,” says New Jersey pro Michael Iaconelli, the only angler to have won a Bassmaster Classic, Bassmaster Angler of the Year and B.A.S.S. Nation Championship.

To get reaction bites from shallow, early-season bass in cold water, Iaconelli will pause a DT-4 often on the retrieve, snap it, rip it, speed it up and slow it down.

DeFoe catches early-season bass on DT-4’s around rocky, channel-swing banks with stained to muddy water, especially those areas with contour and bottom-content changes.

“Anywhere that rock comes out off the bank a little ways and makes a point, or makes a turn, or there’s some rock on the edge of a drop, those are going to be the places that I’m really focused on cranking,” he explains. “Natural stuff as well as rip rap.”

Boat position and retrieve angle is key to getting the most bites. Instead of casting from deeper to shallow water with a retrieve mostly perpendicular to the shore, move up into the three- to four-foot depth and cast and retrieve your DT-4 parallel to the shore.

“You want to keep your bait in the zone where you can keep contact with the bottom for as much of the cast as you can,” Swindle explains.

Like DeFoe, Swindle throws DT-4’s around rocky, channel-swing banks in stained to muddy water. Such areas with laydowns and brush are even better, he says – especially if the water’s rising to submerge new cover.

“That’s one of the most secure bites you’ll have,” Swindle says. “With all that new cover, a lot of fish go to the bank. And in stained water, they’re not quick to leave.”

When early-season fishing in 45- to 49-degree water on rocky lakes with little vegetation, one of Palaniuk’s go-to DT-4 tactics is targeting transition areas on sloping banks. He looks for 45- to 60-degree-angle banks with rock or wood – “something that those fish have to hold onto that’s holding a little more heat,” he explains.

Away from the bank, you can catch pre-spawn bass with DT-4’s on shallow sections of secondary points and “little hard places” on main points, Swindles advises.

“They use those places as transitions into – and then out from – spawning areas,” Swindle says. “You can catch ‘em on a lot of that stuff like that. It’s not just running the bank.”

Whether you prefer cranking the bank or scouring off-shore shallow spots, off-color water is key to success.

“Really clear water can really slow down a cranking bite,” Swindle explains. “You don’t have enough colored water to do it.”

DeFoe agrees. “I’m looking for three feet of visibility or less for cranking,” he says.

In stained to muddy water, red, orange and chartreuse craw-pattern DT-4’s generally out-produce brownish and greenish patterns.

“I like brighter, more bold colors in dirtier water usually,” Palaniuk says. “If I get into moderately stained water, a lot of times I’ll go with just a straight red craw. If it’s really muddy, I’ll usually go to one of the chartreuse colors. That’s just going to be a little bit brighter and help those fish find the bait better.”

From Pond Hopper to Lake Master: A Beginner’s Guide

[print_link]

Growing up as someone in love with the sport of bass fishing, but in a family that didn’t really embrace fishing, I didn’t have many opportunities nor the connections to make it out to any big water. I knew from an early age I wanted to fish big water someday but didn’t know where to start. If you’ve never fished a lake before it can be easy to get intimidated simply by the sheer size and amount of spots you could potentially fish at, but I wanna show you how to prepare yourself to fish a bigger body of water and how pond fishing can help you hone your skills.

The first thing I’d do is go out and buy a baitcasting rod and reel. One thing I see new fisherman doing is only using a spinning reel because that’s all they know how to use but you have let it go sometimes. Doing this opens your arsenal up to so many different lures and techniques that come into play all the time. Go out to your local pond and get used to the way the rod feels in your hands and practice your casts religiously. Everyone bird nests a reel from time to time and you may go through a few spools of line in the process but it’s worth it. When you finally get your cast down and you can look at a target on the water and cast directly to it with a gentle presentation you’re getting somewhere. In lake fishing, accuracy and presentation can be everything so this is a huge role in getting bites you may not have gotten before.

Get used to how your lure feels in the water. Knowing what your lure is doing in the water and what your lure should be doing in the water is just as important as casting it. If you make the perfect cast to a laydown and it’s stacked with fish but you’re working your lure wrong then you could’ve just blown your opportunity. Research how to retrieve the different lures you want to learn and practice them. If you’re fishing around vegetation get used to how your lure feels when it’s clean so that if you do get your lure fouled up you will know what it feels like and can make the adjustment to make more use of the cast you made. In fact many times I’ve gotten bites the moment my lure frees itself from the vegetation it was covered in after giving it a few sharp snaps
Try to find as many different ponds as you can. Find some with a rock in it, some with standing timber, some with lily pads, and as many different types of structure as you can. A lot of times, ponds are just like lakes in the way they are set up and you can fish different features right from the shore. This can allow you to try a bunch of different lures and you can gain confidence in them and broaden your skill range.

Once you can finally make that perfect flip to a juicy lay down and you have confidence in your lure you have to know what it’s like to get bit. Fishing in ponds can be the best way to learn this because a lot of times pond fish won’t be too picky and you can get bit on a variety of things and boost your confidence but when you finally do get that bite on big water it may be one of only a few you could get that day so when it happens you gotta capitalize on the opportunity. Learn where fish live. In pond fishing, this can be a little harder to determine because bass can bite completely random lures sometimes. With that being said, find the higher percentage areas and if you get more bites in one area than another, or around one type of structure more than another, take that into account and take notes of it along with the conditions so you can figure out why they were there.

One thing I have found is when you’re on the fish and you’ve caught a few and for some reason, they stop biting, try mixing it up. Fish can get used to seeing the same thing and completely turn off so if you’ve caught a few back to back and you’re not getting bit anymore, don’t be afraid to throw something else in there because a lot of times it can keep those fish fired up. I saw this first hand this year at the Bassmaster Classic on Lake Hartwell while spectating Elite Series Pro Brent Ehrler. Ehrler was positioned on an island that had a long flat and he was sitting close to a school of bass. He would throw a senko in for a few casts, not get bit, and without hesitation throw in something different and it worked. I saw him switch at least twice before he caught a fish, and then changed again to catch another.

BUFF® renews sponsorship of the Association of Collegiate Anglers Tournament Series

Santa Rosa, CA (April 18, 2018) – BUFF® recently demonstrated a genuine commitment to encouraging young bass anglers by confirming its continued support of the Association of Collegiate Anglers Tournament Series. The governing body for college fishing, the ACA is sanctioned by The Bass Federation, Inc. (TBF), a grassroots organization dedicated to youth, conservation and fishing.

For the ACA’s BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship BUFF® has offered a 50% discount to all 2018 participating anglers this season and a custom BUFF® UV Multifunctional Headwear for all who qualify for and attend the Championship held on Pickwick Lake (May 21-25). Central to this relationship is the message of sun protection and the long-term health benefit of using BUFF® products while on the water.

To help communicate the importance of diligent sun protection, BUFF® leverages the notoriety of Bassmaster Elite Series pro Ott Defoe. Hailing from Knoxville, Tenn., the recently-announced site of the 2019 Bassmaster Classic, Defoe is a firm believer in guarding against harmful solar exposure.

The 4-time Bassmaster winner traces his career path back to personal interaction with professional bass fishermen. Continuing this tradition of encouragement by supporting BUFF®’s ACA involvement, he said, is an honor and a responsibility.

“When I was young, we went to the Bassmaster Classic nine years in a row and talking to the anglers was what I liked most about those events,” Defoe said. “Spending time with them, getting autographs; you got to see that they’re real people too who got to do what they love. That was definitely a driving factor for me becoming a professional angler.

Kevin Walker, Marketing Manager of Buff, Inc. offers this insight: “This is our third year of supporting the ACA and we believe, as a company and as individuals, that nurturing the next generation of outdoors enthusiasts stands as one our most meaningful priorities. Our partnership with Ott Defoe provides a credible connection to the bass fishing world that helps us to accomplish this objective.”
