GILBERTSVILLE, Ky. (March 19, 2018) – Boater Kane Hackemack of Georgetown, Indiana, caught a five-bass limit Saturday weighing 29 pounds, 8 ounces, to take top honors at the 2018 T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) LBL Division opener on Kentucky and Barkley lakes. Hackemack earned $4,915 for his win.

Hackemack said he focused on deep points with current breaks, and caught his first two keepers within 20 minutes at his first area, on the north end of Kentucky Lake,.

“The current breaks had a lot of shad and bass were feeding on them,” said Hackemack, who notched his first career win in FLW competition. “I hooked my first two on a ¾-ounce Strike King Red Eye Shad and stuck with the lure the rest of the day.”

Hackemack said he caught nine keepers from the area, averaging one every 20 to 30 minutes. He said his last good fish – a 7½-pounder – came at 11:30 a.m. From there, he said the bite slowed down.

“I’ve caught many 20- to 25-pound limits on Kentucky Lake, but to get almost 30 is awesome,” said Hackemack. “It truly is one of the best fisheries in the country.”

The T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) LBL Division event on Kentucky and Barkley lakes was hosted by the Kentucky Lake Convention & Visitors Bureau.

The top 45 boaters and co-anglers in the region based on point standings, along with the five winners in each qualifying event, will be entered in the Oct. 25-27 BFL Regional Championship on Lake Chickamauga in Dayton, Tennessee. Boaters will compete for a top award of a Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude outboard and $20,000, while co-anglers will fish for a new Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude outboard.

The 2018 BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 128 tournaments throughout the season, five qualifying events in each division. The top 45 boaters and co-anglers from each division, along with the five winners of the qualifying events, will advance to one of six regional tournaments where they are competing to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American. The 2018 BFL All-American will be held May 31-June 2 at Cross Lake in Shreveport, Louisiana, and is hosted by the Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission. Top performers in the BFL can move up to the Costa FLW Series or even the FLW Tour.

Jordan Lee’s Victory Marks the Seventh Straight Championship for HDS

Lowrance® Leads 2018 GEICO® Bassmaster Classic Champion to 2nd Consecutive Win
Jordan Lee’s Victory Marks the Seventh Straight Championship for HDS

[print_link]

Tulsa, Okla. – Lowrance®, a world-leader in fishing electronics since 1957, continued its domination of America’s tournament-fishing circuit as Lowrance Pro Jordan Lee mounted an epic comeback to claim the 2018 Bassmaster Classic Championship. Held on South Carolina’s Lake Hartwell, March 16-18, Lee’s winning three-day total of 47 pounds, 1 ounce, comes on the heels of his 2017 victory on Lake Conroe, Texas, and marks the seventh straight Classic championship win for a competitor using Lowrance’s HDS fishfinder/chartplotter displays. The 26-year-old Guntersville, Ala., native is also the youngest angler in Bassmaster history to win the tournament two years in a row.

In the Classic’s final standings, six of the top 12 competitors relied on Lowrance HDS Carbon fishfinder/chartplotters to navigate and find key fish-holding areas. In all, more than 50 percent of the 52 anglers competing in this year’s Bassmaster Classic chose Lowrance HDS – that’s more than all other competitive units combined.

Armed with Lowrance HDS Carbon displays and StructureScan® 3D, Lee ended the first day with five bass weighing 18 pounds, 10 ounces, and the second day with another five weighing 12 pounds, 2 ounces. Fighting his way back from sixth place on the final day, Lee weighed in another five-bass limit at 16 pounds, 5 ounces for a winning total of 47 pounds, 1 ounce – a full pound more than the closest competitor.

“I’ve been running Lowrance since I started, and this year I have a HDS Carbon 16 at the dash and two Carbon 12’s at the bow, and that setup, for me, means confidence,” said Lee. “I can clearly see what I am looking at, and when I would catch one, my screen would light up (with fish targets) as the other’s followed him in. I backed off a bit and noticed that those fish stayed around the area, and I was able to capitalize and catch a couple more. StructureScan to me is the clearest. It allowed me to find a number of places like that this week and that was really key for me.”

“Jordan’s come-from-behind performance on Lake Hartwell is not only a testament to his dedication and skill, but proves yet again that the world’s best anglers rely on Lowrance HDS,” said Leif Ottosson, CEO, Navico. “We congratulate him on another amazing showing, and are thrilled to have played an integral role in his second consecutive win and the seventh straight victory for a Lowrance HDS angler.”

Bassmaster Classic Draws Record Attendance To South Carolina’s Upstate

[print_link]

GREENVILLE, S.C. — The 2018 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods over the weekend attracted record attendance from bass fishing fans, B.A.S.S. officials announced today.

Starting with Fan Appreciation Day Thursday through bass tournament competition on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, a total attendance of 143,323 was recorded at one or more of the activities, according to law enforcement counts, host facilities officials and other independent sources.

The previous record was 137,700, set in 2009 at the Bassmaster Classic in Shreveport, La. The 2017 Classic in Houston last March drew 115,000 fans to Lake Conroe and downtown Houston venues.

“This record-breaking attendance would not have been possible without the loyalty of our fans and the partnerships between B.A.S.S. and our sponsors, exhibitors, the media and our host communities — Visit Greenville and Visit Anderson,” said B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin. “We’re thankful for the hard work of the entire B.A.S.S. family and our great volunteers in Greenville and Anderson who made this Classic such a success, and we are grateful to the devoted B.A.S.S. members and fans of the Classic anglers who came to Greenville and Anderson in record numbers.”

“The Upstate’s beautiful outdoors shines even brighter when we welcome B.A.S.S. to the community,” said Chris Stone, president, VisitGreenvilleSC. “We have been able to create a first-rate partnership with B.A.S.S. that we hope to continue for years to come. Something very special happens when we host these anglers, sponsors and enthusiastic followers to Upstate South Carolina. We can’t wait to serve as host again soon.”

Fans in the Bon Secours Wellness Arena stayed through the entire weigh-in to watch one of the most exciting finishes in the 48-year history of the Bassmaster Classic. Jordan Lee, a 26-year-old former college bass fishing champion from Alabama, performed final-day heroics for the second consecutive year to claim bass fishing’s most prestigious title. Lee is the youngest of three anglers to win the Classic back-to-back. The others are Rick Clunn and Kevin VanDam, who each have four Classic victories in their careers.

In addition to the daily weigh-ins, huge crowds attended the takeoffs each morning at Green Pond Landing and Event Center on Lake Hartwell in Anderson, S.C. The Classic Outdoors Expo presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods in Greenville’s 250,000-square-foot TD Convention Center drew numerous fishing fans and their families as well. A new event this year, the Fan Appreciation Day, enabled fans to mingle with the professional anglers for two hours Thursday afternoon.

Neil Paul, executive director of Visit Anderson, noted that the attendance reports did not include nearly 500 people who turned out at Green Pond Landing in the afternoons just to watch the anglers load their bass boats and begin driving toward the weigh-ins in Greenville.

“Our Anderson County Team worked tirelessly to provide the most complete experience to B.A.S.S. and the thousands of people who came out each day to cheer on their favorite anglers,” Paul said. “And once again, Green Pond Landing proved to be an invaluable resource on Lake Hartwell, a Top 100 Bass Lake in America. After three Bassmaster Classics since 2008, the bar has been set. We are honored to have been a part of the greatest Bassmaster Classic in history.”

“We are very appreciative of all the fans who came to Greenville and Anderson to help us celebrate 50 years of B.A.S.S.,” said Eric Lopez, director of Event Operations at B.A.S.S. “It wasn’t long ago that we were hoping to reach the 100,000 milestone for the Classic, and now we are consistently surpassing that mark.”

The previous Classic on Lake Hartwell, in 2015, drew an attendance of 103,091, Lopez noted. Classics in Tulsa, Okla., in 2013 and 2016 drew 106,850 and 107,605, respectively.

This year, in addition to 1,400 participating in Fan Appreciation Day on Thursday, officials recorded attendance figures of 33,207 on Friday, 58,620 on Saturday and 50,096 on Sunday.

Official audience measurements for the Classic LIVE video coverage streamed live on Bassmaster.com, ESPN3 and the ESPN app will not be available until later this week, but Jim Sexton, vice president/digital for B.A.S.S., said web traffic on Bassmaster.com indicates a record number of fans tuned in for live coverage of the bass fishing world championship.

OKEECHOBEE, Fla. (March 19, 2018) – Boater Mikey Keyso Jr. of North Port, Florida, caught a five-bass limit Saturday weighing 24 pounds, 12 ounces, to take top honors at the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Gator Division tournament on Lake Okeechobee. For his efforts, Keyso earned $7,663.

Keyso spent his day fishing south of the Monkey Box targeting postspawn bass in dollarweed pads. He said he rotated between two areas, and used a Texas-rigged Junebug-colored Reaction Innovations Skinny Dipper with 3/8- and ¼-ounce weights to catch his fish.

“There was a new moon and most people focused on spawning bass,” said Keyso, who earned his second career win on Lake Okeechobee in BFL competition. “A wave of bluegill were also spawning, so I Power-Poled down and just slow-rolled my bait through the pads.”

The Florida angler said he used a Fitzgerald Fishing Bryan Thrift Series Frog Rod with 50-pound-test braid line, and estimated that he caught 45 keepers throughout the tournament.

“The water had to be a little dirty. The big ones committed to the bait in dirty water,” said Keyso. “And when they committed, they just destroyed it. It was a fun bite.”

Jordan Lee Becomes Third Angler To Score Back-to-Back Bassmaster Classic Victories

Jordan Lee Becomes Third Angler To Score Back-to-Back Bassmaster Classic Victories

GREENVILLE, S.C. — After three magical days on Lake Hartwell, South Carolina, Jordan Lee now belongs to one of the most exclusive fraternities in professional bass fishing.

Lee, who began Sunday’s championship round in sixth place, caught five bass that weighed 16 pounds, 5 ounces and won the 2018 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods with a three-day total of 47-1.

Lee, who won last year’s Classic on Lake Conroe, Texas, joins fishing legends Rick Clunn and Kevin VanDam as the only anglers in history to win the Super Bowl of professional bass fishing two years in a row.

“That part of it hasn’t set in for me,” said Lee, who pushed his career earnings with B.A.S.S. past $1 million with the $300,000 Classic win. “I’m still just freaking out.

“It was just a perfect week for me. I caught fish on five different baits and a lot of different techniques.”

Unlike last year, when Lee struggled during the first round of the Classic before rebounding to win, he got off to a good start during this year’s first round with a catch of 18-10.

Since he didn’t have a good practice, he said he decided to stay within his comfort zone and fish boat docks — much like he does on Smith Lake in his home state of Alabama.

“I just wanted to cover as much water as I could to give myself the best chance of putting a bait in front of a fish,” he said. “On this lake, I knew boat docks were going to play because they always do — and that’s what I like to do.”

With no solid pattern identified, Lee alternated between a Strike King Rage Swimmer and two Strike King stickbaits — an Ocho and a Shimmy Stick. He stuck with green pumpkin and green pumpkin/blue as his primary colors.

He also caught fish throughout the week on an unspecified jerkbait and a homemade bladed jig.

“I really didn’t have a game plan,” he said. “I knew I could catch a lot of 2-pound spotted bass, and I knew those fish weren’t going to win me the tournament. But that’s what I wanted to do, and everything just kind of fell into place.”

Lee weighed in all spotted bass on Day 2 and saw his weight drop to 12-2. But he still easily made the Top 25 cut in sixth place to fish on Championship Sunday.

But being behind on the final day is nothing new for Lee, considering he started last year’s championship round in 15th place and came back to win.

Once again, he hit the jackpot on the final day.

“Today, I went in the back of this one little pocket and the water was 57 degrees,” he said. “I caught a fish — probably my biggest one of the day — and then it turned out there were bass under every dock in there.

“They were swimming around by my boat. It was just loaded.”

There was one tense moment for Lee in that pocket when he thought he might have let the historic victory slip through his fingers.

“I really thought I had lost the tournament on my last cast,” he said. “There was one bass about 4 or 5 pounds under a dock, and I pitched my worm right on it and it swirled and ate it. I set the hook and the worm popped off.

“If that one had cost me, it was going to be tough to sleep at night.”

As it turned out, though, Lee had just enough weight to edge California pro Brent Ehrler by 1 pound. Ehrler was second with 46-1, followed by Jason Christie, who led the first two days but caught only 8-11 on Sunday and fell to third place with 45-15.

“I didn’t go out all week thinking I was going to win this tournament,” Lee said. “I just decided I was going to fish the way I wanted to fish.

“You can’t plan on winning this tournament. Everything just has to fall into place.”

Alabama pro Mark Daniels Jr. won $2,500 for catching the Berkley Big Bass of the week, a 6-11 largemouth he caught on Day 1.

Toyota Bonus Bucks will pay $7,500 to the highest-placing eligible angler and $2,500 to the second-highest-placing angler.

Kansas State Dominates Bassmaster College Series Classic On Keowee Docks

Kansas State Dominates Bassmaster College Series Classic On Keowee Docks

[print_link]

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Having found favorable clarity and appealing water temperatures during practice on Lake Keowee’s south end, Kansas State’s Zack Vielhauer and Will Andrie sacked a limit of 13 pounds, 2 ounces to win the Carhartt Bassmaster College Classic presented by Bass Pro Shops.

Committing their day to dock fishing, the winners focused on precise presentations that adjusted with fish movement.

“As the sun came out, the fish moved farther and farther under the docks, so we were skipping our baits father under there where nobody else was reaching,” Vielhauer said. “We had never fished this lake before. But in practice, we went all the way from the south end, all the way up to the north end; so we were able to eliminate the whole north end and concentrate on the south end.”

The K-State anglers fished unweighted Texas-rigged Senkos in watermelon and green pumpkin, and 3/16-ounce finesse jigs with green pumpkin/brown trailers. Light line — 8-pound fluorocarbon — proved essential to their effective presentations.

“With the clear water, we were able to get those baits under there and the fish weren’t able to see the line,” Vielhauer said. “But, we work well together as a team and if one of us was unable to make the pitch or the cast, the other one’s able to do that. So, we alternated.”

Andrie said he and his teammate started deeper, but they ended up spending most of their time fishing in 2 to 10 feet of water. Following a rotation that they had established in practice, they fished 25 to 30 docks.

Their action started early with four keepers in the first 20 minutes.

“Most of the fish we caught today were prespawners; they had big bellies and they were ready to go,” Andrie said. “They were staging to do their thing, but we intercepted them today.

“Today, we predominantly had spotted bass — the biggest spotted bass we had all week, but we did find a couple of those key largemouth that really did it for us.”
