LADSON, SC (March, 8 2018) – “They say the Susquehanna is a mile wide and a foot deep,” smallmouth bass guide, Joe Raymond exclaims from the helm of his tricked-out river boat. “That’s part of what makes the habitat here and the fishery so phenomenal for smallmouths.”

But the real story, Raymond says, is the river’s forage—an all-you-can-eat buffet of crayfish, baitfish and bugs . . .

Louisiana Claims Team Title In B.A.S.S. Nation Regional Bass Championship

[print_link]

MANY, La. — The Louisiana B.A.S.S. Nation team defended its home water in grand fashion today in the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Central Regional presented by Magellan Outdoors.

The Bayou State squad, which is composed of 10 boaters and 10 nonboaters, caught 135 bass over two days for a cumulative weight of 379 pounds, 2 ounces. That was more than 11 pounds heavier than Team Arkansas, which actually caught more weight than Louisiana today, but finished second overall with 135 bass for 367-13.

Making the victory event sweeter for the home team is that the team championship came on Toledo Bend Reservoir — one of the most hallowed bass fisheries in the U.S. The majority of Team Louisiana’s anglers hail from south Louisiana, however, so while they are familiar with Toledo Bend, they don’t fish it every day like they do the bass fisheries south of Interstate 10.

“To come here and compete with the competition that was here this week in this event is a feat,” said Louisiana B.A.S.S. Nation President Kevin Gaubert, who fished as a nonboater in the regional.

“When you get to this level, it’s all the top anglers in your state. You come here and do your best, put your time in and hope everything works out in your favor. It did today. I think this is our fifth or six team win in B.A.S.S. Nation.”

The team won a Triton/Mercury boat/motor package valued at $40,000 with the win. Gaubert said a Nation member is interested in purchasing it, and the money they gain will go to good use in helping stage tournaments throughout the state.

Next up is the individual competition in the Central Regional. Nine Louisiana anglers will move to the next round, which includes the top three boaters and nonboaters from each state, as well as the leading 38 anglers on the money line.

In all, 62 boats with 124 anglers will fish Friday for individual state honors, cash prizes and a chance to represent their team in the B.A.S.S. Nation Championship to be held later this year on an undisclosed date and fishery.

David Cavell leads Team Louisiana through two days with 10 bass weighing 31 pounds, 10 ounces. The Prairieville resident is in 11th place overall.

“This means a lot,” Cavell said. “You have two or three of us who are right on top of each other. If you lose a fish, you can get trumped by the other guy. This lake can make you or break you. You get a sizable bass, like a 10- or 11-pounder, and that changes everything.”

Others representing Team Louisiana in the boater division include fellow Prairieville resident Jamie Laiche, 15th with 30-6, and Jeremy Anthony of Loranger, 26th with 28-14.

Charlie Hewitt, yet another Prairieville resident, leads the overall nonboater field with a two-day total of six bass weighing 26-7. Hewitt was disappointed on Thursday after catching three bass that weighed 8-6. That bag followed his incredible haul of 18-1 on Wednesday.

Still, he’s happy to be fishing for individual honors on Friday after helping his team to a championship.

“I went to the same area today I did on Wednesday, and I struggled,” Hewitt said. “I was scared about getting knocked out of first place. But it’s worked out so far — I’m at the mercy of my boater tomorrow, but I’d really like to be around grass. That’s key to my bite.”

Other nonboaters fishing for Team Louisiana on Friday will include Todd Newchurch, third with 21-15; Brian Murphy, 23rd with 15-15; Michael Nobile, 27th with 15-3; Justin Hebert, 28th with 15-3; and Kevin Simon, 31st with 14-14.

Nobile is also in the lead for the big bass award of $250 on the nonboater side with an 8-15 he caught Wednesday.

Bob Blumenstein of the Illinois B.A.S.S. Nation leads the boater field with a two-day haul of 10 bass weighing 42-11. The Bolingbrook resident caught the heaviest limit of the tournament so far with a 25-13 sack today.

“I was fortunate enough to find a spot, but I couldn’t get to it yesterday with the wind,” he said. “If I can get there tomorrow like I was able to today, it could be interesting.”

Blumenstein said averaging 5 pounds per bass was an incredible experience.

“I’m not used to catching fish like that,” he said. “You think ‘Toledo Bend’ and ‘I’m going to go down there and whack ‘em.’ Well, today I whacked them, and it felt good.”

Team Indiana boater Chris Myers whacked the bass, too, today, as evidenced by the 11-6 lunker he weighed to the roar of the crowd — it is in the lead for the $500 big bass award.  It was the heaviest bass in his 37 years of bass fishing and his 23-5 limit also was the heaviest he’s caught. He led Team Indiana in the standings and is in 10th place with 32-4.

“This was the day of a lifetime,” Myers said.

The third and final day of the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Central Regional presented by Magellan Outdoors will begin at 6:15 a.m. CT. Weigh-in is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. at Cypress Bend Park.

The final weigh-in can be seen live on Bassmaster.com.

OKLAHOMA’S HALLMAN GRABS LEAD ON DAY ONE OF FLW TOUR AT LAKE LANIER PRESENTED BY RANGER BOATS

OKLAHOMA’S HALLMAN GRABS LEAD ON DAY ONE OF FLW TOUR AT LAKE LANIER PRESENTED BY RANGER BOATS

South Carolina’s Anders Leads Co-Anglers

GAINESVILLE, Ga. (March 8, 2018) – Pro Bradley Hallman of Norman, Oklahoma, weighed a 23-pound, 11-ounce limit of spotted bass to take the lead on Day One of the FLW Tour at Lake Lanier presented by Ranger Boats. Hallman will bring a 3-pound, 6-ounce lead into Day Two of the four day event that features a field of 184 of the world’s best bass-fishing professionals and co-anglers competing for top awards of up to $125,000 cash in the pro division and up to $25,000 cash in the co-angler division.

“It was an incredible day,” said Hallman, who is fishing in his fourth season on the FLW Tour. “To catch five spots that weigh 23 pounds – that’s a dream come true. That’s a bag that I’ll never catch again for the rest of my life.”

Hallman said that he caught his fish “playing the herring game”, fishing at least 45 different places from Brown’s Bridge all the way down to the Buford Dam.

“I only caught 9 or 10 fish today – there were not that many bites,” Hallman said. “I’ve been doing this long enough that I’m starting to understand the blueback herring deal. I know they move a lot – one hour they’re out on the top of the point, the next hour they could be out on the end of the point, the next hour they’re gone. I’m just trying to stay open minded. I don’t have any secret spots or anything like that.”

Hallman said that he caught his big limit of spots on three different baits.

“I had quite a bit going today, I got bit anywhere from 5 feet out to 24 feet. It was just one of those days where I couldn’t do anything wrong and everything went right.”

The top 10 pros after day one on Lake Lanier are:

1st:          Bradley Hallman, Norman, Okla., five bass, 23-11

Prespawn Bass Fishing: Catch Bass While They’re Staging MTB

Prespawn Bass Fishing: Catch Bass While They’re Staging

[print_link]

Daylight hours lengthen and the water begins to warm as winter gradually turns into spring. It’s prespawn bass fishing time.

During this seasonal transition, bass emerge from their wintertime haunts in search of a spawning site. However, moody early spring weather with its barrage of warm and cold fronts prevent bass from immediately building nests in the shallows. While awaiting the arrival of warmer, stable weather, bass seek a comfort zone somewhere in between their wintertime haunts and the spawning banks.

You can hit the jackpot by finding one of these prespawn staging areas because the fish tend to stack up there, but the depth and location of these sweet spots differ on various bodies of water. Here’s a look at how to find prespawn bass on natural lakes, rivers, lowland reservoirs and highland impoundments.

Prespawn Bass Fishing Natural Lakes

bass spawning

Source: Bassgrab

You can head for the bays of glacial lakes to find prespawn largemouth and smallmouth bass. The fish remain in the bays throughout the year and hold in bulrushes or along rocks at depths of 6 to 12 feet deep even during the winter because there isn’t a lot of depth change on these lakes.

A prime prespawn staging area for largemouth bass consists of a rock pile 4 to 5 feet deep along a vast flat in a bay. You can also locate staging areas along any combination of rocks and aquatic vegetation because bass prefer spawning on the hard bottom close to those spots.

Smallmouth also stage along the hard-bottom flats in the bays but these fish relate less to cover. Look for a tapering type of bank where smallmouth are kind of moseying their way in to the shallows. Smallmouth can be scattered anywhere along the gravel flats, but larger concentrations of bass stage near big boulders or rocks mixed with pea gravel and sand.

Prespawn Bass Fishing Rivers

river spawning bass

Weedy areas in sloughs serve as prime prespawn bass fishing sites for river bass. The fish will stage on old lily pad stem beds because the vegetation grows on a sandy bottom.

These bass spend winter in deep holes and stage in an area that has light current near a deep hole. Even though prespawn bass stay as shallow as 2 feet in the weeds, these staging fish prefer a location near deep water such as a drop-off or the main river channel.

Siltation limits prime spawning areas on a river so one of the main problems with river systems is finding a hard bottom or a bottom that doesn’t silt over during a flood. So the ideal location for staging river bass is any aquatic vegetation growing between a hard-bottom spawning area and the deep pools in a slough or on the main river.

Prespawn Bass Fishing Lowland Reservoirs

Similar to natural lakes and rivers, these manmade impoundments harbor staging bass in shallow water.

You can locate prespawn staging bass in the feeder creeks of lowland reservoirs. Normally when the fish are going up the creeks they are picking out the little flat shallow gravel and mixed rock points.

A limited amount of deep water causes bass to remain shallow throughout the year in flatland reservoirs. So you rarely catch bass deeper than 10 to 12 feet from these waters.

During the winter, lowland impoundment bass seek shelter on the deeper ledges of the creek channel. Prespawn bass move up from the ledges to the sloping secondary points mixed with gravel and rocks where bass stage at depths of 3 to 8 feet. The prime secondary points are those near gravel and sandy banks where the bass eventually move in to build their nests.

Prespawn Bass Fishing Highland Reservoirs

bass on beds prespawn

Major feeder creeks become prime targets in any search for prespawn bass staging on deep, clear highlands reservoirs.

Look for a good prespawn bass fishing point that runs out and has cover, such as cedar trees, pole timber, big boulders or anything else bass can move up to and stage on. Don’t overlook the cedar trees, any other wood cover or rocks because that type of cover can draw heat from the sun and any time the fish has the ability to pull up on the cover and get a little heat is a key to catching those staging fish.

Highland reservoir bass also spend their winters in the creek channels, but unlike their lowland impoundment cousins, these staging fish hold deep, sometimes suspending over depths of 15 to 25 feet. Prime staging areas are close to both the pea gravel spawning banks and the wintering spots. A lot of the areas where you catch prespawn staging bass in trees versus bass you catch in the winter might be just yards apart. There are actually some areas where you can be jigging a spoon and catch wintering bass in 30 feet of water and then turn around and throw a suspending stickbait on a shelf to catch staging bass.

BUFF UVX Mask and UVX Balaclava Provide Heads-Up Protection – March 8,2018

BUFF UVX Mask and UVX Balaclava

Provide Heads-Up Protection

[print_link]

Santa Rosa, CA (March 8, 2018) – Time to face the truth: outdoor recreation isn’t always kind on the complexion. From whipping winds, to solar harshness, to hostile insects — nature guards its resources with some pretty tough sentries. Add to this the keen perception of the critters we seek to hunt, catch or photograph, and it’s clear that anglers and hunters need topside protection beyond hats and glasses.

Buff, Inc., the U.S. subsidiary of ORIGINAL BUFF, SA, the original creators of versatile multi-functional performance headwear, addresses these concerns with a trio of head- and neck-protecting items that’ll ensure your comfort on the water and in the woods.

.’

BUFF UVX Balaclava shown in Pelagic White Camo

UVX Mask Covering your neck and shoulders and fitting over the back of the head, the UVX Mask is made with ultra-lightweight fabric and contouring two-way stretch. Providing a comfortable fit with a streamlined look, the mask wicks away moisture and dries quickly. Laser-cut breathing holes allow a free flow of air for optimal respiration without fogging your sunglasses, while UPF 50+ protection, wind resistance and thermal protection round out the benefits.

UVX BalaclavaFor even greater coverage, Buff takes all the great features of the UVX Mask and extends the protection to reach over your entire head. Combining superior UV protection with the quick-dry advantage of moisture-wicking material and the comfort of enhanced two-way stretch and recovery, this versatile balaclava allows a full range of motion without skimping on its primary duty.

UVX Insect Shield® Balaclava Take the impressive UVX Balaclava, bolster it with Insect Shield treatment and you have a full range of protection that’ll make sure those flies, gnats and mosquitoes don’t crash your party.

BUFF UVX Balaclava shown in Pelagic White Camo

Between full uses, both the UVX Mask and UVX Balaclavas can be worn with the face guard up or down, or with the head covering down. This versatility ensures total comfort and adaptability for everything from talking on your Smartphone, to sipping the morning coffee or nibbling on those energy snacks.

“There’s nothing more frustrating than investing the time and effort into establishing the ideal position for your fishing or hunting objective; only to find the insects and/or elements too distracting to focus on your pursuit,” said Kevin Walker, Buff, Inc. Marketing Manager. “We know how important it is for anglers and hunters to maximize their time on the water or in the woods, so we’ve created highly functional masks and balaclavas from advanced materials to provide anglers and hunters the ultimate protection.”

So where do you need such items? Scarce are the days when you don’t need head and neck protection; but for anglers, consider the scorching reflection of the ocean’s surface and the merciless lashing of windy days. Coastal anglers, you know what happens when you venture close to the mangroves and salt marshes — mosquito assault, horsefly bombardment, sand gnat sneak attack. And how about our northern outings? Black flies ever ruin your pike trip? No more.

And don’t overlook the sight-fishing relevance. From bass to bones, reds to tarpon; the ability block peripheral light by pulling your Balaclava over your BUFF® 10-4 Tech Cap and snugging the edges around your sunglasses can be a difference-maker.

Consider also the benefit of locking sunglasses and/or prescription glasses on your head. Sure, any of the many cord/lanyard options will do the same thing, but these accessories can create awkward, if not downright inconvenient fit issues when you’re wearing a mask or balaclava. With temple stems secured beneath the protective fabric, your glasses stay put; no matter which way you turn, or how fast the boat is moving.

Hunters will appreciate the UVX Mask and UVX Balaclavas for spring turkey hunts, early season deer stands; and even those weeks of planting food plots and working trail cameras. Nature photographers — you’re also on the invitation list. Never again will windburn, sunburn or buzzing bugs cause you to miss that stellar shot.

Alabama Angler Grabs Early Lead In B.A.S.S. Nation Regional Bass Tournament On Toledo Bend

MANY, La. — Alabama’s Bruce Sargent was tight-lipped on Wednesday during the opening round of the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Central Regional presented by Magellan Outdoors.

His bass, however, were not.

Sargent, who hails from Gardendale, Ala., boated a five-bass limit that weighed 23 pounds in the first round of the tournament on Toledo Bend Reservoir on the Louisiana/Texas border. That gave him a 1-pound lead over Iowa’s Ron Kingsbury (22-0) and a 3-pound lead over Indiana’s John Roth (20-0.)

There were 24 additional anglers who caught 15 pounds of bass or more on this fabled fishery today, but none put together a bag quite like Sargent’s. He put himself in prime position to not only nab one of the Top 3 spots on Team Alabama (which is one way to get into Friday’s cut in this three-day event), but also to give his squad a good chance at winning a Triton/Mercury boat package that will go to one of the 19 states represented here that has the highest cumulative weight after Thursday’s action.

“I’ll tell you everything you need to know on Friday,” Sargent said, before divulging a little bit of his day.

“I caught them all day long,” he said. “I had a limit by 9 o’clock and was able to cull from there. I’ve been here five days, and I’ve caught a 5-pounder every day. I’m catching them all over the lake. It’s not just in one creek. I’m running a pattern.”

Sargent’s big bag has Team Alabama in fourth place with 64 bass weighing 180 pounds, 3 ounces. That’s the cumulative total caught by 10 boaters and 10 nonboaters (each team has 20 anglers and can a weigh in a total of 80 bass — five each for boaters and three for nonboaters).

Host state Louisiana leads the team standings with 65 bass weighing 196 pounds, 3 ounces. Arkansas is in second with 65 bass and 184-12 and Iowa is in third with 63 bass and 182-2.

As impressive as Sargent’s limit was, the most impressive bag of the day may have been weighed by Charlie Hewitt of Prairieville, La.

Hewitt, who is fishing in the nonboater division, caught three bass that weighed 18-1. His biggest bass weighed 7 pounds and his other two fish averaged 5 1/2 pounds apiece.

Nick Coleman, who is the president of the Kentucky B.A.S.S. Nation, is second in the nonboater division with three bass that weighed 16-1. He, too, boated a 7-plus pound bass that anchored his bag.

“I don’t want to give away too much, but it took quite a while to get that fish in,” Coleman said. “I was using really light line. I actually caught it on a drop shot; something I didn’t expect to use here. It was midmorning. My bass bit good until about noon today.”

Josh Crededio of Team Wisconsin is third in the nonboater division with a 14-15 limit.

Nonboater Michael Nobile of Destrehan, La., caught the biggest bass of the day — an 8-15 bucketmouth that qualifies for Lunker Class prizes in Texas’ Toyota ShareLunker program.

He too wasn’t saying much about the bass that dropped jaws throughout the crowd gathered at Cypress Bend Park on the shore of Toledo Bend.

“It didn’t take long,” he said of the struggle his big bass exhibited on Wednesday morning. “I was about 15 feet from it when it bit.”

Leland Sanders of Team Oklahoma had the biggest bass in the boater division, a 7-14 largemouth. The boater with the biggest bass of the tournament will win a $500 prize on Friday. The nonboater with the heaviest bass will earn $250.

Exactly 380 anglers will test their luck on Toledo Bend Reservoir again Thursday when launch begins at 6:15 a.m. CT from Cypress Bend Park. There will be a cut when the day is complete and the remaining field will be composed of the leading 38 boaters and the Top 38 nonboaters. The number of remaining boats will almost certainly be higher, however, as each state’s Top 3 in each division make the cut, as well.

Those who do survive the cut will fish for cash prizes. The boater with the heaviest three-day total weight will earn $6,500 and the top nonboater will take home $3,250. Each state’s leading boater and nonboater also will qualify for the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Championship presented by Magellan Outdoors which will be held later this year on an undisclosed date and fishery. From there, top anglers can earn a spot in the GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods.

Tune in to Bassmaster.com for stories, photos, blogs and more. Live streaming video of Thursday’s and Friday’s weigh-ins will begin at 2:30 p.m.

ADRIAN COLLEGE WINS FOURTH-ANNUAL YETI FLW COLLEGE FISHING OPEN ON KENTUCKY/BARKLEY LAKES

ADRIAN COLLEGE WINS FOURTH-ANNUAL YETI FLW COLLEGE FISHING OPEN ON KENTUCKY/BARKLEY LAKES

GILBERTSVILLE, Ky. (March 7, 2018) – The Adrian College team of Chase Serafin of Highland, Michigan, and Cody Batterson, of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, won the fourth-annual YETI FLW College Fishing Open on Kentucky and Barkley lakes Wednesday with a two-day cumulative total of 10 bass weighing 50 pounds, 3 ounces. The victory earned the duo a $27,000 prize package, including a new Ranger Z175 boat with a 90-horsepower Evinrude outboard, and a slot in the 2019 FLW College Fishing National Championship.

The team said they spent the majority of the event fishing three main creeks, just north of Blood River. Serafin said they expected to target bass in bushes, but as temperatures fell their bass began to move toward deeper water.

“When we got down here on Friday, the weather was sunny and the water temps were in the high 50s, so we figured they’d be in the bushes,” said Serafin, a junior majoring in Business Marketing. “But as the week went on, there were some cold nights and the water temperatures fell to around 55 degrees.

On Tuesday (Day One) we found that the fish were starting to pull out, so we fished parallel to the bushes, in like 10 to 15 feet,” continued Serafin. “We used (Rapala) DT-6 crankbaits, umbrella rigs and Terminator spinnerbaits and probably had around 23 pounds in 45 minutes.”

By Wednesday, the bass were at the mouths of the creeks on points. Batterson said they primarily used umbrella rigs and spinnerbaits to rack up a final-day limit of 25 pounds, 4 ounces.

“The catches were more scattered today,” said Batterson, a sophomore majoring in marketing. “We actually caught one of our three 6-pounders in the last half-hour of the tournament. We were back near the takeoff marina and decided to fish some riprap and got it on an umbrella rig. It was unbelievable – this whole week was unbelievable.”
