Alabama Angler Grabs Early Lead In B.A.S.S. Nation Regional Bass Tournament On Toledo Bend

MANY, La. — Alabama’s Bruce Sargent was tight-lipped on Wednesday during the opening round of the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Central Regional presented by Magellan Outdoors.

His bass, however, were not.

Sargent, who hails from Gardendale, Ala., boated a five-bass limit that weighed 23 pounds in the first round of the tournament on Toledo Bend Reservoir on the Louisiana/Texas border. That gave him a 1-pound lead over Iowa’s Ron Kingsbury (22-0) and a 3-pound lead over Indiana’s John Roth (20-0.)

There were 24 additional anglers who caught 15 pounds of bass or more on this fabled fishery today, but none put together a bag quite like Sargent’s. He put himself in prime position to not only nab one of the Top 3 spots on Team Alabama (which is one way to get into Friday’s cut in this three-day event), but also to give his squad a good chance at winning a Triton/Mercury boat package that will go to one of the 19 states represented here that has the highest cumulative weight after Thursday’s action.

“I’ll tell you everything you need to know on Friday,” Sargent said, before divulging a little bit of his day.

“I caught them all day long,” he said. “I had a limit by 9 o’clock and was able to cull from there. I’ve been here five days, and I’ve caught a 5-pounder every day. I’m catching them all over the lake. It’s not just in one creek. I’m running a pattern.”

Sargent’s big bag has Team Alabama in fourth place with 64 bass weighing 180 pounds, 3 ounces. That’s the cumulative total caught by 10 boaters and 10 nonboaters (each team has 20 anglers and can a weigh in a total of 80 bass — five each for boaters and three for nonboaters).

Host state Louisiana leads the team standings with 65 bass weighing 196 pounds, 3 ounces. Arkansas is in second with 65 bass and 184-12 and Iowa is in third with 63 bass and 182-2.

As impressive as Sargent’s limit was, the most impressive bag of the day may have been weighed by Charlie Hewitt of Prairieville, La.

Hewitt, who is fishing in the nonboater division, caught three bass that weighed 18-1. His biggest bass weighed 7 pounds and his other two fish averaged 5 1/2 pounds apiece.

Nick Coleman, who is the president of the Kentucky B.A.S.S. Nation, is second in the nonboater division with three bass that weighed 16-1. He, too, boated a 7-plus pound bass that anchored his bag.

“I don’t want to give away too much, but it took quite a while to get that fish in,” Coleman said. “I was using really light line. I actually caught it on a drop shot; something I didn’t expect to use here. It was midmorning. My bass bit good until about noon today.”

Josh Crededio of Team Wisconsin is third in the nonboater division with a 14-15 limit.

Nonboater Michael Nobile of Destrehan, La., caught the biggest bass of the day — an 8-15 bucketmouth that qualifies for Lunker Class prizes in Texas’ Toyota ShareLunker program.

He too wasn’t saying much about the bass that dropped jaws throughout the crowd gathered at Cypress Bend Park on the shore of Toledo Bend.

“It didn’t take long,” he said of the struggle his big bass exhibited on Wednesday morning. “I was about 15 feet from it when it bit.”

Leland Sanders of Team Oklahoma had the biggest bass in the boater division, a 7-14 largemouth. The boater with the biggest bass of the tournament will win a $500 prize on Friday. The nonboater with the heaviest bass will earn $250.

Exactly 380 anglers will test their luck on Toledo Bend Reservoir again Thursday when launch begins at 6:15 a.m. CT from Cypress Bend Park. There will be a cut when the day is complete and the remaining field will be composed of the leading 38 boaters and the Top 38 nonboaters. The number of remaining boats will almost certainly be higher, however, as each state’s Top 3 in each division make the cut, as well.

Those who do survive the cut will fish for cash prizes. The boater with the heaviest three-day total weight will earn $6,500 and the top nonboater will take home $3,250. Each state’s leading boater and nonboater also will qualify for the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Championship presented by Magellan Outdoors which will be held later this year on an undisclosed date and fishery. From there, top anglers can earn a spot in the GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods.

Tune in to Bassmaster.com for stories, photos, blogs and more. Live streaming video of Thursday’s and Friday’s weigh-ins will begin at 2:30 p.m.

ADRIAN COLLEGE WINS FOURTH-ANNUAL YETI FLW COLLEGE FISHING OPEN ON KENTUCKY/BARKLEY LAKES

ADRIAN COLLEGE WINS FOURTH-ANNUAL YETI FLW COLLEGE FISHING OPEN ON KENTUCKY/BARKLEY LAKES

[print_link]

GILBERTSVILLE, Ky. (March 7, 2018) – The Adrian College team of Chase Serafin of Highland, Michigan, and Cody Batterson, of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, won the fourth-annual YETI FLW College Fishing Open on Kentucky and Barkley lakes Wednesday with a two-day cumulative total of 10 bass weighing 50 pounds, 3 ounces. The victory earned the duo a $27,000 prize package, including a new Ranger Z175 boat with a 90-horsepower Evinrude outboard, and a slot in the 2019 FLW College Fishing National Championship.

The team said they spent the majority of the event fishing three main creeks, just north of Blood River. Serafin said they expected to target bass in bushes, but as temperatures fell their bass began to move toward deeper water.

“When we got down here on Friday, the weather was sunny and the water temps were in the high 50s, so we figured they’d be in the bushes,” said Serafin, a junior majoring in Business Marketing. “But as the week went on, there were some cold nights and the water temperatures fell to around 55 degrees.

On Tuesday (Day One) we found that the fish were starting to pull out, so we fished parallel to the bushes, in like 10 to 15 feet,” continued Serafin. “We used (Rapala) DT-6 crankbaits, umbrella rigs and Terminator spinnerbaits and probably had around 23 pounds in 45 minutes.”

By Wednesday, the bass were at the mouths of the creeks on points. Batterson said they primarily used umbrella rigs and spinnerbaits to rack up a final-day limit of 25 pounds, 4 ounces.

“The catches were more scattered today,” said Batterson, a sophomore majoring in marketing. “We actually caught one of our three 6-pounders in the last half-hour of the tournament. We were back near the takeoff marina and decided to fish some riprap and got it on an umbrella rig. It was unbelievable – this whole week was unbelievable.”

Based on the total of 216 boats that entered, a total of 21 teams qualified for the 2019 College Fishing National Championship. The 21 teams that advanced were:

Spring Time Stick Worms by Tiffany Rich March 7,2018

Spring Time Stick Worms

[print_link]

Springtime is every bass anglers kick before the summer. With chilly mornings, the sun is slow to warm up the water by the afternoon. You will often find the bass feeding up on shad right before the approaching spawn.

A stick worm can be the trick to get that difficult bite this time of year while the bass are in transition. This style bait is versatile and gives anglers multiple rigging options. One of my personal favorites is a Ghoti, 5inch senko mold in light watermelon. I typically fish it Texas style, switching between weight and weightless for different action depending on the bite.

The basic design is a 5-inch worm from tip to tip tapering down at the bottom. Most tackle stores sell the stick worm in different sizes and colors varying between a 3inch-6inch and a ray of color schemes depending on the time of year and water clarity. Companies will modify the stick worm with a custom ring effect. They can vary from a slight ring effect in the center or a full set of rings in the core. Like any bait, both styles have a place and time for its success rate.

My preferred method for weightless rigging is a spinning rod. Stick worms can be skipped easily under low hanging branches and under docks. For weighted options, you can use either, as it becomes a matter of preference. I prefer a 7-foot medium action rod with a fast tip that allows you to feel the bite. To keep the fish from seeing my line, I use 10lb Seagar fluorocarbon line. It can be rigged on line as light as 4 pounds or as heavy as 12 pounds, depending on the way it is rigged and cover.

For the weightless option, make your cast and let it sink on a slack line. This allows the bait to dance as it flutters and quivers to the bottom. Watch your line carefully for it to jump or even start running off, when you see this, reel up the slack and set the hook. A sweeping hook set allows you to drive the hook home, but not rip it out of their mouth. A light bullet weight can be used, depending on the conditions, I prefer to go as light as possible to give the bait as slow a fall as possible. Most strikes will actually happen in the fall. Cast up shallow and let your bait fall to the bottom, then give it twitches to allow the bait to rise and fall again on a slack line.

The wacky rigged stick bait can be extremely deadly this time of year, as its slow fall and quivering action really drive the bass crazy. A spinning rod set up is the preferred method for this method. The hook is run through the center of the worm from side to side and left exposed. There are also hooks made with a wire guard to help when fishing around cover. The worm gives all the action you need. Just cast it out, up shallow, under overhanging limbs, under docks, and around cover. Let it sink on a slack line and when it hits bottom, make it hop up off the bottom and fall back. Watch your line and hang on.

A nail weight can be added to the smaller end to make the bait glide backward as it sinks, giving it a unique look. You can also use a Ned weight in the fat end when wacky rigged. This allows the bait to actually sink on one end with the hook being the pivoting point and giving the bait a very different look and action. You can also use a wacky jig head, that will allow the bait to fall faster but still have the same quivering action.

A drop shot can also be used to rig the straight worm. Here you can vary the length of the worm, dropping down to a 3-inch worm or even fishing the 5-inch version. It is all about presenting your bait to the bass. You can nose hook it, Texas rig it, or even wacky rig it. You can even add a blade to the bait to add flash.

Spring is a great time to throw a straight stick worm. Bass love an easy meal and the worm is just that. Grab yourself a couple packs and a couple packs of hooks and go enjoy a day of exciting action.- @Snookiefishing

Raymarine Axiom Chalks Up Another Bassmaster Open Win

Another Bassmaster Open Win

Hot on the heels of Bobby Lane’s Bassmaster Eastern Open win, Stephen Browning wins Bassmaster Central Open with help from Raymarine Axiom

Ridgeland, MS (March 7, 2018): Just last month, Raymarine pro Bobby Lane went wire-to-wire at the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Eastern Open on Florida’s Kissimmee Chain. After years of finishing near the top but never first on his hometown waters, it was a very significant win.

A similar story played out this past weekend on Mississippi’s Ross Barnett Reservoir, where Arkansas-based Raymarine pro Stephen Browning took top honors at the 2018 Bassmaster Central Open after finishing second on Ross Barnett in 2013 and fifth in 2015.

The other commonality between the two wins can be found at the console and bow of each pro’s boat—Raymarine Axiom Pro multifunction navigation displays.

On Kissimmee, Lane credited Axiom Pro’s excellent high-speed sonar performance for helping him locate hurricane-rearranged hydrilla at boat speeds up to 65 mph. Once located, he’d quickly jump to bow, keeping grass lines in view on his bow Axiom Pro 12.

“The clarity and speed of Axiom is absolutely amazing. If it looks like there’s a fish there, it’s a fish. The CHIRP Sonar, DownVision, SideVision, RealVision 3D, and how fast the mapping responds is just amazing,” said Lane.

Similarly, Arkansas-based bass pro Stephen Browning attributed much of his recent Ross Barnett Reservoir win to his electronics. “My Raymarine Axiom units really helped me hone in the right areas,” said Browning. “In my chart view, I had the tracking system on to make precise runs to and from the areas I fished, which were largely shallow three- to four-foot flats—either stump fields or eel grass edges.”

“During Monday morning practice I idled two miles or more with the intention of finding fish-holding stumps, also marking them for quick and safe navigation. Every time I found one, I would drop a waypoint on my Axiom Pro’s Navionics Platinum+ map and then idle around the stump in a tight circle to make sure that was the only stump there. Then, once I found a good route that I could take, I could save a good 15 minutes a day by not having to idle through these areas.”

Browning has discovered Raymarine RealVision 3D a great way to survey water quickly for cover and fish.

Browning also credits Raymarine’s SideVision technology for helping him locate fish-holding grass edges.

“During Tuesday’s practice I spent a lot of time looking for and marking grass edges with my SideVision. Then I would back out and look closely at my SideVision screen for any kind of grass edge irregularities. I’m always amazed with what Raymarine can do in the shallow zone. I can see all the little details that often set you apart from other anglers. That translates to 100% confidence in my electronics.”

Browning’s experience with Raymarine SideVision goes back 2015, the year he finished fifth at the same BASS Central Open.

“When I fished Barnett in 2015, I learned to dial back the SideVision range on my Raymarine eS series units to look 25’ to 30’ off each side of the boat. It performs better in that extremely shallow three- to four-feet of water than any other side-looking technologies I’ve used in the past,” said Browning.

When using SideVision, Browning prefers the copper palette. “I’ve always used it. My eyes just see that particular color better, even in the sun, and I can identify cover, fish, and bottom irregularities.”

Not only did Browning’s Axiom units help him find the right cover and navigation routes, the time he saved was critical to this particular tournament win.

“The fifth fish every day came within minutes of me having to leave. It was really fishing for five key bites a day. Had I not had the confidence that I could run in and out of that place quickly and safely—rather than having to leave 15 or 20 minutes earlier to idle out—then I wouldn’t have caught those fish. I would’ve been idling, not fishing. This was a tremendous key to winning the event.”

Presentation-wise, Browning’s key bait was a 3/8-ounce Z-Man ChatterBait JackHammer with Z-Man DieZel Minnowz or Razor Shadz trailer fished on  St. Croix Legend Tournament Bass rods with Lew’s baitcasters and 20-pound fluorocarbon.

Browning finished the three-day event with 15 bass for 44 pounds even, jumping from fifth place on Saturday to first on the final day, edging out second-place finisher Ken Iyobe by just over two pounds. Following this win, Browning proceeds to the 2018 Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Opens Championship, Oct. 18-20, location TBA.

Bassmaster Classic Field Includes Top Names In Professional Bass Fishing

Bassmaster Classic Field Includes Top Names In Professional Bass Fishing

[print_link]

GREENVILLE, S.C. — When Bobby Lane thinks back to the times he’s fished the GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods on Lake Hartwell, he doesn’t bask in the glow of two Top 5 finishes.

Instead, he ponders what might have been.

In his first career Classic in 2008, Lane finished fourth — and he still laments one small, dead fish that he wasn’t able to cull that week due to B.A.S.S. rules.

In 2015, he finished second, a little more than 3 pounds from the $300,000 first-place paycheck — and he went home brokenhearted over an opening round that saw him come to the scales one fish short of a five-bass limit.

He said those two events sum up what it will take to win this year’s Classic, which is scheduled for March 16-18 on Lake Hartwell with daily takeoffs at 7:30 a.m. ET from Green Pond Landing and Event Center in Anderson, S.C., and weigh-ins at 4:30 p.m. each day at Bon Secours Wellness Arena in downtown Greenville.

“There’s just no margin for error — not when you’re fishing against so many good fishermen,” said Lane, a Florida pro who will be making his 11th Classic appearance. “It can break your heart. It was especially hard the last time we were there and I only brought in four fish the first day and then went out and really caught them the last two days.

“You just can’t afford that against this kind of field.”

This year’s list of competitors will include 52 anglers who qualified through the Toyota Bonus Bucks Bassmaster Team Championship, the Carhartt Bassmaster College Bracket, the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Championship presented by Magellan Outdoors, the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Opens and the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year standings.

There are eight AOY winners taking part, including superstars like Greg Hackney of Louisiana, Aaron Martens and Gerald Swindle of Alabama and Brandon Palaniuk of Idaho. There are 11 competitors who have already won at least one Classic trophy, including Michigan legend Kevin VanDam, who shares the B.A.S.S. record with four Classic titles, and California pro Skeet Reese, the 2009 Classic champ who has pocketed more than $3.2 million during his B.A.S.S. career.

Another Classic champion in the field is Casey Ashley — a Donalds, S.C., pro who considers Lake Hartwell his home lake. He edged Lane in frigid conditions the last time the event visited Hartwell in 2015.

Like Lane, he said it’ll likely be hard to overcome one bad day against this field.

“There are no season points or anything like that on the line when you’re fishing the Classic — and that’s what makes it so hard to win,” said Ashley, who will be making his ninth Classic appearance. “Nobody’s out there looking for a 12- or 13-pound limit. Everybody’s swinging for the fences.

“You could always have somebody bring in 24 pounds. If that happens and you get off to a slow start, it’s going be hard to make up that kind of ground.”

Many of the competitors spent time practicing on Hartwell before it went off-limits Jan. 1. But Ashley elected not to because he expects a much different lake when competition begins.

“During pre-practice, the lake was 10 feet low,” he said. “But we usually get a lot of rain this time of year to raise the lake level, and that’s what’s happened.”

As of Tuesday afternoon, the lake was only about 18 inches away from full pool.

“What was working when it was 10 feet down, won’t be working when the Classic starts,” Ashley said. “When I won the tournament here before, everything played right into my wheelhouse with the deep bite. But it’ll be a lot different tournament this time around.”

With the lake nearly full and daytime temperatures expected to push into the 60s most days between now and the beginning of the event, Lane said he also expects a much different tournament than the one three years ago.

“I don’t think the fish will be spawning,” he said. “But the water temperature will be a lot warmer, which means the tournament could play out a lot shallower. It could be a situation where everybody catches them, and it’s just a question of who finds the big ones.

“We won’t know for sure until we get there.”

Anglers will be allowed to practice Friday through Sunday and again on the official practice day, Wednesday.

(Note: On Monday, March 12, Classic qualifiers Randy Howell and Alton Jones and other fishing celebrities will take part in a “Meet The Elites” event at the Civic Center of Anderson. The pros will be giving fishing seminars and signing autographs during the evening. Tickets are $12 with proceeds going to Meals on Wheels.)

Ott DeFoe, Seth Feider and Brandon Palaniuk make Bassmaster Classic Predictions By Rapela

[print_link]

Whether you’re fishing in the Bassmaster Classic this month or on your favorite highland reservoir, Rapala® and Storm® crankbaits, Terminator® jigs and spinnerbaits, and Rapala Shadow Rap jerkbaits will put fish in the boat. Those are among the baits top Rapala pros predict they’ll throw in official practice before the March 16-18 Bassmaster Classic on South Carolina’s Lake Hartwell.

Weather and water conditions, and how the bass react in practice, will determine which of those baits the pros will tie on while competing in the Classic, described often as “the Superbowl” of competitive fishing.

“There will be guys that catch them in 30 foot of water and there will be guys that catch them in three foot of water – and everything in between,” says Brandon Palaniuk, the 2017 Bassmaster Elite Series Angler of the Year. “So you need an arsenal of baits that allows you to target a lot of different depth zones that those bass could possibly be at, and different types of cover that they could be around – but at the same time allow you to cover a lot of water to be able to figure that out quickly.”

In practice for the Classic, Palaniuk says, he’ll start his search for the winning fish with shallow-running Rapala DT and Storm Arashi crankbaits and Rapala Shadow Rap Deep jerkbaits. An Arashi Top Walker topwater bait could be a “wildcard” option, he says.

“Those baits allow me to fish at a lot of different depth zones and a lot of different types of cover,” he explains. “You get into that time of year where it’s still early spring and you’re going to have fish spread out all across the board. It’s just going to be a matter of a guy figuring out where the little bit better fish are.”

Pros Ott DeFoe and Seth Feider agree. Their go-to bait selections for Classic practice will be similar, but with differences that reflect their individual styles and preferences.

“Right off the giddyap, I expect the Rapala DT-6 will be a player,” says DeFoe, a five-time Classic qualifier and 2011 Bassmaster Rookie of the Year. “But my staples, the Terminator Pro Jig and the Terminator Spinnerbait, will be in play too.”

Warming, rising water – a trend underway on Hartwell today – would encourage DeFoe to target newly submerged shallow brush with Terminator jigs and spinnerbaits. Colder, stable water would likely see him slinging Shadow Rap and Shadow Rap Deep jerkbaits more. But warmer than average water temps could make a Rapala BX™ Waking Minnow a bait “that might surprise a lot of people,” he says.

Feider, fishing in his first Classic in his third year on the Bassmaster Elite Series, will begin practice on Hartwell with an open mind.

“I’m going to be rigged up for everything,” he says. “We could be anywhere from a pre-pre-spawn tournament to there might even be bed fish when we get there. So it’s key to have a wide arsenal of baits. With Rapala, Storm and Terminator, I’ve got that. I’ll have everything I need to tackle any depth, water temperature or cover.”

If weather and water conditions meet Feider’s expectations, his main baits are likely to be shallow-running Rapala DT crankbaits, Storm 360GT Searchbaits and Rapala Shadow Rap Deep jerkbaits. But warmer-than-usual water temps could put into play a topwater favorite like a Storm Arashi Cover Pop or a Terminator Walking Frog, he says.

While not everyone can fish in the Bassmaster Classic – only about 50 of the top 100 professional anglers in the country qualify – anyone fishing on highland reservoirs in March can load a boat with bass with the Rapala, Storm and Terminator baits Palaniuk, DeFoe and Feider will be fishing on Hartwell.

Highland reservoirs – also known as “upland reservoirs” – generally feature deep, clear water with steep, rocky banks and very little submerged vegetation, AKA “grass” in bass-fishing shorthand. If that describes your favorite nearby waterbody, the baits and tactics the pros describe below will work for you too.

Rapala DT-Series Crankbaits
Rapala’s DT® Series baits dive fast to a pre-set depth and stay in the strike zone longer than any than other crankbait on the market. They combine carefully placed internal weights, a tapered fuselage and a thin tail to create the ultimate crankbait action. “DT” stands for “dives to.” The number indicates the maximum depth to which a DT bait will dive.

“I got a feeling the fish will be coming up, so I’ll be throwing a DT-4, DT-6 and DT-10, especially if the water is a little low and cold,” Feider says. “You can throw all those baits with the same rod. They all act similar, with that classic Rapala bait action. And the nice thing about them is that they’re game-day ready right out of the pack. You don’t have to tune them and they come in every color under the sun.”

On Hartwell, Feider will target shorelines and points with rock bottom and wood cover with DT-series cranks. Palaniuk will target “transitional type of banks” with a DT-6 and DT-10. DeFoe will sling a DT-4 and DT-6 on “channel-swing banks and those staging-type places where those fish will set up before moving right in to spawn.”

Storm Arashi Square 3, Arashi 5
Arashi Silent Square 3 and 5’s are different than any other square-bill crankbait on the market, Palaniuk says. And they’re almost always his go-to shallow runner. The numbers in the names indicate the baits’ maximum diving depths.

“I can take a Square 3 and target shallow wood and docks and a lot of the more shallow cover,” Palaniuk says. “And I can take an Arashi 5 and fish a lot more of the little bit flatter banks and things like that.”

Featuring a sturdy, square, circuit-board lip and premium finishes, the Arashi Silent Squares are built to withstand repeated contact with cover. “Generally, when I’m fishing Arashi Squares, I’m target oriented,” Palaniuk explains. “I’m throwing ‘em around rocks, logs, brush, something like that. And I’m throwing right into the middle of it.”

Arashi’s square bills were specifically designed to help deflect the baits off of heavy cover without hanging up. “It’s going to hit that cover and its going to roll my hooks away from whatever I’m banging into,” Palaniuk explains. “So it will come through that type of cover pretty freely.”

Rapala Shadow Rap Deep
Combining a horizontal struggle with a vertical fade, Rapala’s all-season jerkbait perfectly mimics an injured minnow’s last moments. Featuring a metallic style body finish with textured scales, the Shadow Rap is designed to target bass and other gamefish in two to four feet of water. The Shadow Rap Deep targets fish in four to eight feet.

“Depending on the temperature of the water, Shadow Rap and Shadow Rap Deep jerkbaits certainly could be in play,” DeFoe says. “A Shadow Rap really shines in that 50-degree water-temp range — 48, 50, 52 — with good water visibility.”

Unlike a host of similar-looking jerkbaits, Shadow Raps neither rise slightly on the pause, nor strictly suspend in space. Rather, they combine a horizontal struggle with a slow vertical drop. Not only will they dart side to side, they will spin around almost 180 degrees with the right action applied.

“If the fish are not on the shoreline/point stuff, I’ll take a deep-diving Shadow Rap and throw it right down the center of these drains, or guts, that the fish will suspend in as they follow them back to the ends of pockets,” Feider says. “A lot of winter fish will use those drains as they turn into pre-spawn fish. They’re just fish highways this time of year.”

Shadow Raps are not just for suspending fish, however, DeFoe notes.

“In water I like to fish a jerkbait in — that has two to four feet of visibility — I’m fishing it within a foot, two foot, of the bottom the whole time,” he explains. “So I’m catching fish that are holding within a foot or two of the bottom. It’s not like I’m fishing it eight feet down in 20 feet of water.”

Storm 360GT
Creating the ultimate illusion of natural movement, Storm 360GT Searchbaits pair a lifelike, single-ball rattling jig head with a realistic, soft body with 3D holographic eyes and a toe-in boot tail that imparts incredible action at any retrieve speed. “GT” stands for “Go To” bait.

If Lake Hartwell’s water is in the 55 to 60-degree range and has risen to flood shoreline brush, Feider says he will likely fish a 360GT “a few different ways – either just on the jig head, as a swim bait trailer or a spinner bait trailer.”

A simple, steady retrieve gives 360GTs a fish-attracting swimming motion. Whether you’re fishing from a boat, dock or shore, you can easily cast them around main-lake points where the water is four to 12 feet deep. Or try targeting shallower bays with submerged bushes or grass, swimming the lure over the tops of them. Pro Tip: Fish shallower on windy days and deeper in still weather.

Terminator Jigs & Spinnerbaits
Featuring a unique head design, the Terminator Pro Series Jig is much more versatile than most jigs. Custom jig-skirt colors, color-matched brush guards, a single rattle and a heavy VMC® Black Nickel hook further differentiate it from other cookie-cutter jigs that all pretty much look the same.

“100 percent, I think I would bet almost anything that I will weigh fish in on a Pro Jig in the Classic this year,” DeFoe says. “Especially if rising water is putting more and more cover in the water all the time. That’s where the jig and spinnerbait I expect will come into play more.”

When water both warms and rises throughout a tournament, DeFoe says, “it’s like most of the fish in the lake — instead of just portion of them at a time — swim to the bank at once, especially if there’s an abundance of cover.” Simple biological realties are the cause. “There’s new life there and there’s stuff that’s getting flooded that has food opportunities in it,” DeFoe explains.

Terminator’s T-1 Original Titanium Spinnerbait features unbreakable titanium construction, a premium ball bearing swivel and a premium VMC® hook. Additional features include: painted, gold or nickel-plated, bevel-edged blades; super realistic metallized baitfish head; and QuickSkirt changeable premium silicone skirts.

“There’s a really good chance of a spinnerbait bite,” DeFoe says.
