BROOKELAND, Texas (March 5, 2018) – Boater Dicky Newberry of Houston, Texas, caught a five-bass limit weighing 22 pounds, 3 ounces, to win Sunday’s rescheduled T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Cowboy Division event on Sam Rayburn Reservoir. For his finish, Newberry won $8,965.

“I started out fishing shallower ridges, but ended up catching staging females in drains,” said Newberry. “It took a little while to figure them out. Around 11 a.m. I worked through a drain that ran up the side of a point in deeper water. There was some scattered grass on the bottom, and I think there were females in there staging getting ready to move up to spawn.”

Newberry said the drain was around 100 feet wide and 12 feet down, and that he used a ¾-ounce red Rat-L-Trap and a Carolina-rigged lizard to catch his fish.

“I thoroughly fished the drain with both and caught 3 keepers,” said Newberry. “After that I ran to 10 or 12 different spots that looked similar to it, finding fish in over half of them. A lot of my day was about knowing where those additional drains were. I think a lot of people have a tendency to stay put if they start catching them, but I continued to move after those three bites.”

Newberry’s day was capped off with a 7-pounder at the last drain he visited, which he caught using the Rat-L-Trap.

APPLING, Ga. (March 5, 2018) – Boater Bart Blackburn of North Augusta, South Carolina, caught a five-bass limit weighing 17 pounds, 6 ounces, to win the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Savannah River Division event on Clarks Hill Lake. Blackburn earned $4,319 for his win.

Blackburn said he began his day fishing ditches with a green-pumpkin-colored Zoom Trick Worm. He said he caught a limit for about 12 pounds, including one that he weighed in.

“I figured 12 pounds wouldn’t be enough to win so I ended up switching patterns,” said Blackburn, who logged his first career win in FLW competition. “I realized the fish had pulled out into deeper water from where they were last week because of a cold front, so I went out into 7 to 12 feet of water and threw a crankbait.”

Blackburn used a ½-ounce Red Craw-colored Daiwa Flat Flash Crank to scour humps that had rock piles. After a while, he was able to find an area loaded with bait and fish.

“I look for loons diving for food this time of year, and the area had one loon that was really active,” said Blackburn. “I culled three fish, and picked up another good keeper from similar structure to finish out my day.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Bart Blackburn, North Augusta, S.C., five bass, 17-6, $4,319

BYRDSTOWN, Tenn. (March 5, 2018) – Boater Pat Eichmann of Nancy, Kentucky, caught five bass weighing 20 pounds, 6 ounces, to take top honors at the 2018 T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Mountain Division season-opener on Dale Hollow Lake. For his win, Eichmann earned $7,763.

Eichmann spent his day targeting bass in mid-lake channel swings. He said he had two productive areas – one in the back of a creek channel and the other at a main-lake creek channel wall.

“I started on flats in the morning but they weren’t there,” said Eichmann, who earned his second career win in BFL competition. “Those creek channel walls ended up being the deal. We had a full moon during the tournament and the water temperature was bouncing between 48 and 58 degrees, so I think that’s what got the big females moving in and staging.”

Eichmann said he caught three that he weighed in on a ½-ounce Zorro Baits Casting Booza Bug Jig with a green-pumpkin-colored Zoom Big Salty Chunk, and two on an umbrella rig with neon-blue L&M Bass Snacks Swim Shad trailers.

“When I got around submerged trees I’d use the jig, but if there weren’t any I switched to the umbrella rig,” said Eichmann “I was in 8 to 10 feet of water and had my limit by noon. It was a fun day out there.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

Wright Claims Co-angler Title

HENDERSON, N.C. (March 5, 2018) – Boater Zachary Whitt of Newport News, Virginia, caught a five-bass limit weighing 21 pounds, 8 ounces, to win the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Piedmont Division opener on Kerr Lake presented by Navionics. Whitt took home $4,315 for his efforts.

Whitt said he fished for bass along a stretch of riprap in Nutbush Creek, primarily focusing on three sections with ledges 6 feet down.

“The ledges were right next to deep water – sometimes 20 to 25 feet down – and the bass were really keyed in on them,” said Whitt, who earned his first win in BFL competition. “It was the last major deep hole before the back of creek, and I figured I could target bass both heading up to spawn or heading back out with the approaching cold front.”

Whitt didn’t want to divulge specifics, but said he used a red crankbait and caught every fish he weighed in by 9 a.m.

“I borrowed a 16-foot boat with a 25-horsepower engine for this event, and I think ended up being a big factor for me,” said Whitt. “The smaller engine kept me close to takeoff. If I had used my own boat I wouldn’t have stayed as close to the ramp and definitely would have gone to other areas.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Zachary Whitt, Newport News, Va., five bass, 21-8, $4,315

2nd:         David Wright, Lexington, N.C., five bass, 19-10, $2,767

Top performers in the BFL can move up to the Costa FLW Series or even the FLW Tour.

New Legend Tournament® Bass Pitchin’ rod – debuting at the 2018 GEICO Bassmaster Classic Expo – promises improved accuracy and comfort – St.Croix Rods

St. Croix Rod Pitches Perfect Game

New Legend Tournament® Bass Pitchin’ rod – debuting at the 2018 GEICO Bassmaster Classic Expo – promises improved accuracy and comfort

Park Falls, WI (March 5, 2018) – In bass fishing, like baseball, every pitch counts. Much like painting the corners of the plate, pitching a wakeless bait into a laydown or grass pocket is often what wins games.

“As time goes by, a lot more anglers are pitching than flipping,” says Dan Johnston, National Accounts Manager for St. Croix Rods and bass fishing expert. “Down and up with one hand pitching is being used in more scenarios all the time, from docks to laydowns to grass edges. The funny thing is, many of the rods being billed as pitching rods are actually flipping sticks, and there’s a big difference in the technique mechanics and what’s required from a rod.”

To that end, St. Croix Rod is proud to introduce a new technique-specific model to the Legend Tournament® Bass series, the 7’ 5” medium-power, fast action Pitchin’ rod (LBC75HMF). The St. Croix design team painstakingly considered countless factors to create the ideal pitching rod, including rod length, power, action and ergonomics, to best suit contemporary pitching situations and baits.

“First, 7’5” is the perfect length to cover a wide variety of pitching distances — from short to far — without getting in the way of common obstructions. The length is also long enough to transfer a lot of energy for sure hooksets. Secondly, the moderate-fast action protects braid and fluorocarbon lines and supplies the right amount of deflection given braid’s lack of stretch. This means you can jack fish from a close distance and the rod absorbs much of the energy to keep bass buttoned. As to the heavy power, we wanted to create a rod that’s simply going to get fish around cover and into the boat, end of story,” says Johnston.

The Legend Tournament Bass Pitchin’ rod also features the progressive, proprietary St. Croix technologies found in other Legend Tournament Bass models, including Integrated Poly Curve® (IPC®) tooling technology, Advanced Reinforcing Technology™ (ART™), and high-modulus/high-strain SCIV graphite with FRS for unparalleled strength and durability.

“The Pitchin’ rod is fantastic addition to the family,” notes Johnston, “We retained the Fuji K-Series Tangle-Free Guides with Alconite Rings and put a pitching/casting guide platform on it to reduce line slap and increase accuracy. The result is a rod where the line moves like a laser through the guides for far greater pitching accuracy.”

The new rod also features a Fuji PTS blank-touch reel seat with built-in hood, which drops the reel farther down into the reel seat. “This is a really comfortable set-up for anglers who palm the reel when pitching. The feedback has been very positive,” adds Johnston.

Missouri-based BASS Elite pro Brian Snowden is one angler who’s has been very impressed with the Legend Tournament Bass Pitchin’ rod. “For fishing shallow, sparse grass or laydowns in tight quarters — especially with overhanging trees — it’s become my go-to stick. The length is perfect; not too long to interfere with overhanging objects but still powerful enough to set the hook while fishing in tight conditions. Its moderate-fast action allows me to fish a variety of lures ranging in size from 1/8- to ¾-ounce, which is a pretty wide and versatile range for one rod,” says Snowden.

All-new for 2018, Legend Tournament Bass rods have been refined to include a new guide train, improved reel seats and split-grip cork handles. The series has also been expanded to 31 models, including new 8’ plus models leading the way in long-rod performance. All Legend Tournament Bass rods boast 15-year transferable warranties backed by St. Croix Superstar Service. Retail prices range from $250 to $400.

The 2018 PBC Academy Sports & Outdoors $10,000 Spring Team Bass Trail Qualifier #1 at Shearon Harris got off to a  blustery start!!  The weather was very windy for March with air temps 33 degrees in the am on up to 57 in the pm. Water  temps averaged about 58 degrees. Winds were light at the 6:50 blastoff and then blew steady at about 15 and gusted to  about 25 in the afternoon! All 79 teams agreed it was a very tough fishing day.  Harris can turn on & off in a second, but  today it was turned off!!! Last year it took right at 42 lbs. to win but when the nor’easter blew in the last few days..Harris  shut down.Tony Fofi & Walt Gulledge outdid the field weighing in just 3 bass at 15.92 lbs. and also caught the 1st place Big Fish  (9.65 lbs.), won the TWT and also should have $500 coming from Nitro Boats for a total of $4,215 in winnings. The team
found the 3 fish in less than 6′ of water!!! What really helped today was the 9.65 pounder!
1st Place Fofi on left, Gulledge in Center

Thomas Sheffer & Ken McNeill took 2nd place with 4 fish (one at 8.33 lbs.) weighing 14.17 lbs. to take home $822 in  winnings. 3rd Place Team, Jim Croce & Jeremy Pope, had 2 nice fish weighing 13.88 lbs. and took home $632!! The 4th  place team of Jerry Marshburn & Kevin Woodall  had 5 bass at 12.69 lbs. and also won the 2nd Place TWT for a total of  $1,123. 2nd place Big Fish (9.27 lbs.) went to the 8th place team of Mike Stephenson & Thanos Tsoumbos to give them  a total of $784 in winnings. The prize money got spread around pretty good today!

Only 58 fish were weighed in for a total of 204 pounds for an average of 3.51 lbs. each. Most of the fish were caught on   Jerkbaits, chatterbaits and shallow running crankbaits in anywhere from 2 to 6 feet of water. Water temps are very
important now and bass are starting to move into the shallower water. Going to Jordan next week where we don’t have a  slot limit and the bass should ON!!! Jordan has put out some good bags over 30 here lately depending on the weather.

Bassmaster College Series Classic Bracket Heads To Milford Lake In August

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The 2018 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Classic Bracket presented by Bass Pro Shops will take place Aug. 14-16 on Milford Lake out of Junction City, Kan., B.A.S.S. announced today.

The tournament will host the Top 4 finishing teams from the 2018 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops, which will be held on Lake Tenkiller just a few weeks prior on July 19-21.

The bracket-style, catch-and-release competition will feature all eight anglers competing in the first round. From there, the field will be cut to the Top 4 on Day 2. And finally, the remaining two anglers will compete head-to-head for a berth in the 2019 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods.

Bassmaster Elite Series pro Jordan Lee of Grant, Ala., represented the College Series in the 2014 GEICO Bassmaster Classic. Now, just three years later, he is the reigning GEICO Bassmaster Classic champion — a title most anglers only dream of winning.

“College fishing was by far the greatest step for me and the best four years I could ever hope for,” said Lee. “I learned a lot about the sport, and that is really paying off now. College fishing makes you step outside your home lake and challenges you to find bass on different lakes. To win the Classic a few years after graduating college shows the younger generation that it can happen — just have to put in your time, take the right steps and have fun!”

New this year, the final two days of the event will be aired on Bassmaster LIVE presented by Mossy Oak Fishing and Covercraft. Fans can visit Bassmaster.com to watch on-the-water action in real-time as it occurs throughout the competition.

“It was only a matter of time before Bassmaster LIVE would make its way into the College Series events,” said Mike McKinnis, vice president of media content for JM Associates and producer of The Bassmasters TV show on ESPN2.

“With quality anglers like Jordan Lee coming through the ranks every year, we need to see more of how they’re doing it — and what better way to do that than through Bassmaster LIVE.”

The local host for the event will be Junction City, Kan., and Geary County, Kan.

“Junction City and Geary County, Kansas, are very honored to have been selected as the host of the 2018 Bassmaster Carhartt College Series Classic Bracket,” said Michele Stimatze, Junction City/Geary County Convention and Visitors Bureau Director.

“This will be an exciting time for Milford Lake, the largest lake in Kansas, and for our citizens and visitors. Having worked with B.A.S.S. in the past, we know this event will attract visitors from across the nation and put the spotlight on Kansas bass fishing. Our team is already working to make it a great event, and we look forward to making everyone feel welcome.”

UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE WINS YETI FLW COLLEGE FISHING EVENT ON LAKE GUNTERSVILLE PRESENTED BY BERKLEY

UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE WINS YETI FLW COLLEGE FISHING EVENT ON LAKE GUNTERSVILLE PRESENTED BY BERKLEY

Tennessee Tops Record 273-Boat Field at Lake Guntersville, 27 Teams Advance to National Championship

[print_link]

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (March 5, 2018) – The University of Tennessee team of John Lambert of Blountville, Tennessee, and Logan Brewster of Maryville, Tennessee, won the largest collegiate fishing tournament of all-time – 273 boats – Saturday at the YETI FLW College Fishing event on Lake Guntersville presented by Berkley. The duo weighed a five-bass limit of 25 pounds, 9 ounces to best the massive field, which included Jake Fromm, starting quarterback for the NCAA College Football National Championship runner-up Georgia Bulldogs.

The victory earned the Volunteers bass club $2,400 and a spot in the 2019 FLW College Fishing National Championship. Eleven limits in excess of 20 pounds were brought to the scale.

“We only caught 8 fish all day long, but they were the right size,” said Lambert, a sophomore majoring in construction science. “We were fishing in an area right across from the takeoff ramp at the State Park. We had our boat sitting in 6 feet of water and we were throwing into 2 feet, just slow burning our ChatterBaits over the grass.”

“The area we were fishing in Seibold Creek, targeting the grass,” said Brewster, a senior majoring in mechanical engineering. “We were very thorough – we knew the fish were there.”

Lambert said that he and his partner each threw green-pumpkin-colored vibrating jigs – Brewster, an EverGreen Jackhammer, and Lambert, a Z-Man Original ChaterBait, with green-pumpkin Yamamoto Zako swimbait trailers.

“I caught a couple on a RyPro Cyclebait, but all of our limit that we weighed came on the ChatterBaits,” Lambert said. “It took us awhile to figure it out, but slowing down was key for us. We had to fish it over the grass, but slowly.”

“The bait had to be ticking the bottom or the grass to trigger the bites, you couldn’t burn it too fast,” Brewster added.

The top 10 teams on Lake Guntersville that advanced to the 2019 College Fishing National Championship are:

1st:          University of Tennessee – John Lambert of Blountville, Tenn., and Logan Brewster, Maryville, Tenn., five bass, 25-9, $2,400

2nd:         University of South Carolina – Trevor Topken, Warwick, N.Y., and Brandon Biby, New City, N.Y., five bass, 24-7, $1,000

3rd:         Bethel University – Cole Walker, Counce, Tenn., and Wilson Smith, Southaven, Miss., five bass, 22-4, $500

4th:         University of North Alabama – Drake Tavel, Dora, Ala., and Parker Davis, Morris, Ala., five bass, 22-2, $700

5th:         Mississippi State University – Tristan Hendrix, Hoover, Ala., and Grant Hyche, Sterrett, Ala., five bass, 22-0, $500

6th:         Bethel University – Dax Ewart, Humboldt, Tenn., and Logan Millsaps, Jasper, Ga., five bass, 21-15

7th:         University of Montevallo – Dallin Hatter, Brookwood, Ala., and J.T. Russell, McCalla, Ala., five bass, 21-4

8th:         Calhoun Community College – Christopher Lupo, Huntsville, Ala., and Austen Willard, Athens, Ala., five bass, 20-14

9th:         Presbyterian College – Thomas Broom and Andrew Snellgrove, both of York, S.C., five bass, 20-12

10th:       Auburn University – Sean Murphy, Lutz, Fla., and William Phillips, Auburn, Ala., five bass, 20-5
