Why to Fish Rip Rap for Bass in Flood Conditions by Jason Sealock

When the water on your local fishery floods rapidly, it can be hard to keep up with the fish. These tips will help you catch bass in rising water.

(Photo: Jason Sealock)

Flooded waters can be tough fishing, especially as it is happening. But fishing rip rap and steeper banks for bass during a flood can be one way to remain consistent in very turbid and rapidly changing conditions.

I’ve had a lot of messages this week about what the rising water is going to do to the fishing on Kentucky Lake. Ten or more feet of water always affects fishing.

It got me thinking, however, about how flood conditions, especially on the rise, are some of the more daunting scenarios to overcome in bass fishing. And a lot of anglers panic wondering where the fishing will still be consistent with so much additional water.

Rip rap is one easy fall back on rapidly rising water especially in the prespawn as well as steeper, taller banks like bluff walls. When the water is rising rapidly, the flatter banks have water move farther back onto them. The water gets back into the trees, and it tends to spread the bass out and put them in places where you can’t even get a lure to affectively.

EVINRUDE ANGLER WINS FLW HARRIS CHAIN OF LAKES EVENT

EVINRUDE ANGLER WINS FLW HARRIS CHAIN OF LAKES EVENT

STURTEVANT, Wis., March 2, 2018 – BRP, a world leader in powersports, announced today Evinrude professional angler Chris Johnston won the Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) tournament held February 22-25, 2018 on the Harris Chain of Lakes, in Florida. Johnston, hailing from Ontario, earned his first FLW Tour win with a four-day total of 79 pounds, 6 ounces, taking home the $125,000 prize. In addition to Johnston, Evinrude anglers Glenn Brown and Anthony Gagliardi were also ranked in the top ten. Johnston now leads the 2018 Angler of the Year standings.

“I didn’t have a long run or big waves to deal with in this tournament, just short hops,” said Johnston. “The nice thing about running the Evinrude E-TEC G2 is not having to turn a wrench or do any maintenance at all on the motor since it was hung and still having the confidence that I’m going to get back to weigh-in every time. The other benefit of my Evinrude is that with the unbelievable fuel economy, I would fill up with fuel every night and never put more then $20 of gas in my tank. Those little things add up and give me the peace of mind to focus just on fishing.”

“All of us at Evinrude congratulate Chris on his outstanding performance and well-deserved win,” said Tracy Crocker, senior vice president and general manager, Evinrude. “With no break-in period, no oil changes, no scheduled maintenance for 5 years or 500 hours, and our industry-leading ten-year factory-backed extended service coverage, the Evinrude E-TEC G2 is designed to giving boaters the easiest ownership experience possible. We are proud to provide the engines relied on by so many top anglers.”

The total purse for the FLW Tour at the Harris Chain of Lakes presented by Lowrance was more than $930,000 with payouts given to the top 60 anglers in the Pro Division. The tournament was hosted by Lake County, Florida. The next event for FLW Tour anglers will be the FLW Tour at Lake Lanier presented by Ranger, March 8-11 in Gainesville, Georgia, hosted by Gainesville Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Fast-Ripping, Hard-Stopping. Rapala® Ripstop® Incites Epic Bite

0

“This is the kind of bait that gives you goose bumps,” says Rapala® Chief Rapala Lure Designer Mark Fisher, who helped dream up and design the RipStop. “It’s a cross between a swimbait and a jerking, twitching bait that suspends.”

“The ability to stop and suspend is the missing link that swimbaits don’t have,” Fisher explains. “And Rapala has that. The lure comes to a fast stop, almost as if it’s making a collision. And it doesn’t go out of the strike zone — it stays right in front of the fish. That is the integral part of this whole philosophy.”

Also integral is the RipStop’s unique hard-plastic-boot tail, which creates what Fisher describes as a “hard-rolling, slashing action” that mimics the live-minnow moves of a soft-plastic swimbait. “But it’s not a hybrid,” he says. “It’s not incorporating soft plastics into the element of the bait. It’s a hard bait with a soft-bait action.”

Although soft-plastic boot-tail swimbaits elicit bites well on the retrieve, many sink like a stone when paused, scaring off fish still considering whether to commit. The RipStop’s ability to stop, suspend and then resume swimming will convert lookers into biters.

For the best results, fish RipStops on a spinning rod spooled with 6- to 10-pound-test Sufix® 832 Advanced Superline® braid tipped with an 8- to 10-pound-test leader of Sufix Invisiline 100 percent Fluorocarbon.

Reehm Takes Over In Bassmaster Open On Ross Barnett

Reehm Takes Over In Bassmaster Open On Ross Barnett

[print_link]

RIDGELAND, Miss. — While most everyone else focused on catching bass in various spawning stages, the opposite held true for Clark Reehm. On Ross Barnett Reservoir, he intentionally avoided spawning bass and took the lead at the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open.

Reehm’s limit weighing 20 pounds, 15 ounces, leads over the second-place catch weighing 19-8 caught by Caleb Sumrall. Fred Roumbanis is third with 18-8, and Brad Whatley is fourth with 18-5.

Most impressive is what Reehm is not doing. Normally, playing the spawning card is a wise move. Bigger bass are shallower and easier to catch. Those same fish can be unreliable under suddenly changing weather conditions. Both scenarios have panned out so far.

“I am looking for largemouth that are unaffected by the weather,” said Reehm of Elm Grove, La. “A cold front like we had this morning can completely change a spawning bite.”

Actively feeding bass are his target. That is a smart move for obvious reasons.

“If they are hungry they will bite,” he continued. “Twelve months of the year fish will be hungry, so why bother chasing those doing anything else?”

Reehm proved the point after catching the big bass of the day — a largemouth weighing 8-1 — on his third cast of the morning, and he did so fishing in a crowded area. If no one catches a heavier bass by the end of competition Saturday, Reehm will win the Phoenix Boats big bass award of $750.

“I’m not at all concerned about the fishing pressure because I’m using something different,” he said.

What that something different is remains a mystery, although a “reaction lure” capable of triggering strikes is a logical assumption.

Searching for new water is a daunting task when beginning a tournament, but that forced move paid off for Sumrall. Incoming cloud cover made the gamble worth the risk.

“The clouds turned on a big bass bite for me as I moved along,” said Sumrall of New Iberia, La. “I’m fishing what I know because it’s my first experience here.”

Moving along meant using a lure capable of covering water, stimulating a reaction bite along the way. That may change with Friday’s weather, and Sumrall plans to be ready. Fishing with an open mind, as he did today, is the game plan.

“Hopefully, I can take what I found today and expand on it tomorrow, given the adjustments,” explained Sumrall, who earned paid entry fees for the Opens after winning the 2017 B.A.S.S. Nation Championship.

While cloud cover benefited Sumrall, it hindered Roumbanis.

“It made it worse, scattering my fish,” he admitted. “I’m running a lot of areas and the change forced me to figure their next move as I went along.”

Anticipating where his fish will move next and remaining confident in the lure choice will be his focus Friday.

“The water is dropping, and that has the fish on the move, so I plan to adjust accordingly,” said Roumbanis of Russellville, Ark.

The sudden wave of rain and falling temperatures triggered good thinking by Whatley.

“When the front came through at 9 o’clock this morning it changed my presentation, and it will again tomorrow,” said Whatley of Bivins, Texas.

“Slowing down was all it took to stay in the game,” he added. “After I slowed down my day got better.”

Whatley also has a good idea of where his chosen fish are in the spawning cycle. Should conditions change Friday, he’ll try to adjust accordingly. Whaley said he’s confident the same lure will continue to produce, although working it even slower might be necessary.

Rapidly changing weather conditions were a challenge to most of the field, and that should be the case again Friday.  Air temperatures plummeted from a high of 85 degrees on Wednesday to  55 by weigh-in today. With the chill came more rain, adding to abnormally high precipitation in previous days. Sunny skies and much cooler temperatures are forecast for the second round of fishing.

Justin Leet of Memphis, Tenn., leads the co-angler division with a three-bass limit weighing 13-4. Larry Savell Jr., holds down second with 12-11, and Bob Burgess of Millington, Tenn., is third with 9-13.

This season’s Opens circuit features the Central and Eastern divisions with four tournaments apiece. The season concludes with an Opens Championship that will be held Oct. 18-20 at a location yet to be announced.

The championship field will include the eight winners from the Opens tournaments. Joining them will be the Top 10 anglers in the point standings from each division. The 28 competitors will fish for invitations to the 2019 Elite Series and Classic.

Takeoff time is 6:15 a.m. CT from Madison Landing/Pelican Cove Restaurant with weigh-in beginning at 2:15 p.m. on Friday. The championship weigh-in begins Saturday at 3:15 p.m. Location is Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World in the Jackson suburb of Pearl.

Local event host is Visit Ridgeland.

DAY ONE OF COMPETITION CANCELED AT COSTA FLW SERIES ON LAKE SEMINOLE DUE TO HIGH WINDS

DAY ONE OF COMPETITION CANCELED AT COSTA FLW SERIES ON LAKE SEMINOLE DUE TO HIGH WINDS

Advisory for Thursday, March 1, 2018

WHAT:                 Day one of the Costa FLW Series event presented by T-H Marine on Lake Seminole has been canceled due to strong winds. Originally scheduled to start today (Thursday, March 1), the event is the second stop in the Southeastern Division.

WHERE:              Costa FLW Series at Lake Seminole presented by T-H Marine

                             Bainbridge Earle May Boat Basin

100 Boat Basin Circle

Bainbridge, Ga.

NOTES:               There are sustained southwest winds at 20 mph with 30-mph gusts in the forecast. Additionally, the water level on Seminole is about 6 inches higher than normal, making it more difficult to see the already-hazardous stumps. After monitoring the forecast for much of practice, the decision was made early Thursday morning.

The tournament will resume Friday and Saturday with the full field fishing each day. The pro and co-angler winners will be determined by the cumulative weight of two days of competition instead of three.

Anglers will take off from the Bainbridge Earle May Boat Basin, located at 100 Boat Basin Circle, in Bainbridge, Ga., at 7 a.m. ET both days of competition. Weigh-ins will be held at the Boat Basin on Friday and Saturday beginning at 3 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

Fishing Laydowns, Logjams, And Timber For Bass In Rivers – MTB – March 1,2018

[print_link]

Rivers have a unique way of turning the homes of land creatures into aquatic habitat. Through flooding and bank erosion, rivers and tributaries on the upper sections of reservoirs topple trees that either wash into the river or lay partially submerged along the shoreline.

The laydowns and logjams created by the river’s natural logging operation become ideal cover for bass. The logs attract baitfish and provide cover for bass to either get under something in the shade or break the current of the river or stream.

Fishing Laydowns 101

Bass prefer laydowns because the logs provide cover extending from the shallows out to deeper water. The fish have options of being on the shallow or deep end of the log or somewhere in between depending on what the water level is doing.

The location of a fallen log determines where bass position in the wood cover. If the laydown protrudes from a flat shoreline, it usually has a main limb holding the log off the bottom. Current flowing under the log creates a hole next to the supporting limb where bass reside. Bass hold in this shady washout because it serves as a current break and an ambush point. The best lures for fishing laydowns on flats are spinnerbaits, shallow-diving crankbaits, jigs and plastic worms.

Fishing Laydowns On Steep Bluffs

tube fishing bass tips

Bass suspend in outer limbs of laydowns extending from steeper shorelines, such as bluffs or channel banks. Slow-falling lures such as Flukes or tube baits and topwater lures or floating worms trick bass suspended in the laydown’s limbs.

Some fallen trees wash away from the banks and sink in the mud of flats with only a limb or two sticking out of the water. When fishing laydowns like these, circle these limbs with your boat and make multiple presentations because bass could be holding anywhere along this cover. Ideal lures for pitching to these submerged logs include shallow-running crankbaits, jigs, plastic worms and flipping tubes.

Fishing Laydowns On Windy Days

jig-bait

Wind and current also pack fallen trees into floating logjams along main banks or in small pockets. The bigger the logjams, the more bass will relate to the side of the trees, rather than being under the logs. Present jigs and Texas-rigged plastic worms to any available openings in the mass of floating timber.

Laydowns and logjams frequently are the only cover along some banks so make several presentations to these targets. Sometimes it will take between six to 18 casts to isolated laydowns to trigger a strike.

PRO ANGLERS SET TO COMPETE FOR $125K AT FLW TOUR ON LAKE LANIER PRESENTED BY RANGER BOATS

PRO ANGLERS SET TO COMPETE FOR $125K AT FLW TOUR ON LAKE LANIER PRESENTED BY RANGER BOATS

High Water Levels Expected to Play Big Role in Internationally-Televised Event

[print_link]

GAINESVILLE, Ga. (Feb. 27, 2018) – The FLW Tour, the most competitive Tour in professional bass-fishing, returns to the water next week, March 8-11, with the FLW Tour at Lake Lanier presented by Ranger Boats. Hosted by the Gainesville Convention and Visitors Bureau, the tournament will feature 368 of the world’s best bass-fishing professionals and co-anglers casting for top awards of up to $125,000 cash in the pro division and up to $25,000 cash in the co-angler division.

The FLW Tour has visited Lake Lanier four times previously, with 2018 marking the fifth visit in FLW’s 23-year history. The fishery has played host to two Forrest Wood Cup championships (2012 and 2010) and Tour events in 2006 and 1999. The total purse for the FLW Tour at Lake Lanier presented by Ranger Boats is more than $930,000, including $10,000 through 60th place in the Pro Division.

“Our community benefits greatly from events like this one that are designed to include the entire family,” said Gainesville Tourism Manager Regina Dyer. “In the past six months, fishing has resulted in more than $2 million dollars in economic impact and showcased Lake Lanier as a world-class fishery and prime location for anglers of all ages. We’re excited to bring the FLW Tour to town and expect a great week of fun for all fans of fishing and the outdoors.”

Anglers will take off at 7 a.m. EST Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning and at 7:45 a.m. DST Sunday morning (Daylight Savings Time begins Sunday) from Laurel Park, located at 3100 Old Cleveland Highway, in Gainesville. Thursday and Friday’s weigh-ins, March 8-9, will be held at the park beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday’s weigh-ins, March 10-11, will also be held at the park, but will begin at 4 p.m.

“I’m excited to finally showcase the jewel that Lake Lanier is for bass fishing,” said local angler Jason Johnson of Dawsonville, Georgia, who is fishing his fourth season as a professional on the FLW Tour. “We’ve had two Forrest Wood Cups here, but those are always in August – the toughest time of the year to fish. We’re hitting the lake at just the right time this year and it’s really going to show that Lake Lanier is the best spotted-bass tournament fishery in America. There is not another lake that has the quality and quantity of nice, spotted bass, and I’m anxious to show it off to the world.”

Johnson said that recent rain has the water levels completely at full pool and with more rain being forecast before the tournament he expects the largemouth bass to play a larger role than normal.

“If the tournament isn’t won strictly on largemouth, the key will be having one or two mixed in each day,” he said. “The high water has flooded a lot of trees and sage brush and there is enough water for the largemouth to get up into them. Guys are going to be catching fish with everything that you can throw in your tackle box.

“I think the winner will likely have a four-day total of 63½ to 64 pounds,” Johnson went on to say. “I think if you can catch 16 pounds a day, you’ll be right there at the end.”

Television coverage of the FLW Tour at Lake Lanier presented by Ranger Boats will premiere in high-definition (HD) on NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) April 18 from Noon-1 p.m. EST. The Emmy-nominated “FLW” television show airs on NBCSN, the Pursuit Channel and the World Fishing Network and is broadcast to more than 564 million households worldwide.

Prior to the weigh-ins Saturday and Sunday, March 10-11, FLW will host a free Family Fishing Expo at Laurel Park from noon to 4 p.m. each day. The Expo is a chance for fishing fans to meet their favorite anglers, enjoy interactive games, activities and giveaways provided by FLW sponsors, and learn more about the sport of fishing and other outdoor activities.

Also for youth, the FLW Foundation’s Unified Fishing Derby will be held at Laurel Park on Saturday, March 10 from 9-11 a.m. The event is hosted by FLW Foundation pro Cody Kelley along with other FLW Tour anglers, and is free and open to anyone under the age of 18 and Special Olympics athletes. Rods and reels are available for use, but youth are encouraged to bring their own if they own one. The 1st and 2nd place anglers that catch the biggest fish will be recognized Saturday on the FLW Tour stage, just prior to the pros weighing in.

As part of the FLW Tour’s community outreach initiative, FLW Tour anglers will visit students at Chestatee High School in Gainesville on Wednesday, March 7 from 8:30-10 a.m. to introduce students to fishing and outdoor activities in their community. During the presentations the pro anglers will reinforce how science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) relate to outdoor activities as well as boating safety.

In FLW Tour competition, pros and co-anglers are randomly paired each day, with pros supplying the boat, controlling boat movement and competing against other pros. Co-anglers fish from the back deck against other co-anglers. The full field of 368 anglers competes in the two-day opening round. Co-angler competition concludes following Friday’s weigh-in, while the top 30 pros based on their two-day accumulated weight advance to Saturday. Only the top 10 pros continue competition Sunday, with the winner determined by the heaviest accumulated weight from the four days of competition.

Throughout the season, anglers are also vying for valuable points in hopes of qualifying for the 2018 Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of professional bass fishing. The 2018 Forrest Wood Cup will be on Lake Ouachita in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Aug. 10-12 and is hosted by the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism and Visit Hot Springs.

“Legendary fishing tales”
Tales from the Central Virginia Fishing Legend – JERRY ELDER

Being a fishing hero is the dream of many anglers’ in the world. Everyone wants to have their name in the papers (and nowadays, all over social media) as the top angler who dominated the event that they fished. Jerry Elder, a veteran angler from my hometown, Lynchburg, in central Virginia, has lived that dream. Many young anglers (including myself) who have fished against Jerry may not have understood just how great of an angler he has been over the years. I had the chance to sit down and catch up with Jerry on some of his biggest tournament wins and craziest stories. I expected to see a few cool plaques and trophies. What I actually saw blew me away…
Walking into the room where Jerry keeps many of his trophies was like walking into a fishing hall of fame. Plaques and trophies from tournament wins were everywhere, and I lost count of how many framed newspaper articles there were mentioning him from tournament wins. Getting to see pictures and hear from Jerry himself about all these great tournament wins and top finishes was definitely a treat for me.

Jerry shared some cool backstories with me behind many of these tournaments. One of my favorites was about a crazy event that took place on Lake Gaston. Heading down there for a team tournament, Elder and his partner knew they were going to be facing tough conditions. They didn’t expect how tough it actually was in reality though! After a hard day of fishing, Elder and his partner only had 1 fish to show for their efforts. That single fished weighed in at a whopping 2 lbs. 2 oz., far from the tournament lunker that is needed in most events. Disappointed by the tough day, Elder considered throwing the bass back as they pulled up to the weigh-in, but decided against it upon hearing dock-talk about how tough the fishing was.

What a decision that turned out to be! As Elder and his partner weighed in the only keeper caught in the tournament, that whopping 2 lb. 2 oz. bass was worth a check of $1,050 split between Elder and Danny. This was an unreal story for me to believe, it really puts into perspective how much a small 2 lb. 2 oz. bass could really be worth when a pile of money is on the line. It speaks to the truth of never giving up and how it’s not over until every fish has been weighed.

However, as crazy and unlikely as that story was my favorite memory that Jerry Elder shared with me was even more surprising and showed a lot about Jerry’s character as well as his fishing skills.
Elder was fishing a Red Man qualifier event on Kerr Lake (Buggs Island) in June, the top 2 anglers from the tournament advance to the Invitational at the next level. After a strong limit on day 1, Elder then struggled slightly more on day 2, but late in the day was able to cull a bass almost identical to his smallest in his live-well to gain 1 full oz. That 1 oz. made the difference in the end as Elder finished 2nd in the tournament, beating crankbait legend and pro David Fritts by just 1 oz. for 2nd place. Elder self-described this event as “divine intervention” to win in such a fashion, but the story didn’t end there.
Finishing 2nd qualified Elder for the Invitational event on Webbers Falls Lake, part of the Arkansas River in Oklahoma. Being such a long trip for the Virginia angler, Elder asked his friend and fishing partner Harry Hughes to accompany him to Oklahoma to practice for the event and for support. Although skeptical, Elder convinced his friend to spend the week with him in Oklahoma, with the condition that they would split any of Elders winnings 50/50. Being that the event paid 40 places, Elder and Hughes both saw this as decent odds to earn their money back.

Arriving at Webber Falls, the lake was fairly flooded and messy, but Elder was able to find some good fish with a spinnerbait in his practice around an oxbow backwater pond way up river that was basically unpressured. However, on day one Elder met his partner for this draw tournament, and lost the coin flip to use his own boat. He was now at the mercy of his day one partner from Kentucky. The Kentucky angler took Elder far to the other side of Webber Falls, much too far for him to fish the Oxbow he found in practice, so Elder decided to just stay in the same area when his half of the day came around. Though not ideal, Elder still scraped out a decent catch on a crankbait fishing the Kentucky angler’s area.
Day 2 proved to be Elder’s day. His day 2 partner had a gas tank leak, so Elder was able to use his boat and fish the way he wanted for all of day 2. However, after making the long run to his Oxbow backwater pond, Elder fished all of the area he caught good fish on in practice with a spinnerbait, and did not catch a single fish. Already committed to the area he was in, Elder decided to keep fishing in the area but change technique. He began to work a line of thick grass-type weeds with a jig & pork combo, which resulted in a 4 lb. bass on the first cast. In about 2 hours, Elder had boated a solid limit good enough to win the event in those thick weeds. Elder needed to race back for the weigh-in. However, on the return boat ride he discovered a large watercraft occupying the lock that he needed to pass through to the tournament weigh-in site. Knowing he could not make it back on time without getting through the lock on this pass-through, he decided to squeeze his boat in with the large watercraft. It was a tight fit, Jerry said he was definitely worried, but it worked out for the best.

With his big bag of bass anchoring his weight on day 2, Jerry Elder won the Red Man Webber Falls Invitational. First prize for Elder was a brand new Chevrolet truck and a brand new Ranger boat.
Never dreaming he would actually win the event, Elder remembered his promise to his good friend Harry Hughes, giving Harry the Chevrolet truck and keeping the Ranger boat for himself. This really speaks to this angler’s character, keeping a promise to a friend with those kinds of prizes at stake, as well as his talent as an angler.

It was a real privilege to be able to sit down with Jerry Elder, one of central Virginia’s most successful anglers, and hear these wild fishing stories first hand. It gives me the motivation to want to go fish more and make my own adventures, so I can have stories like his to tell one day.

Tight lines friends!
