New software update offers increased functionality for Raymarine Axiom, Axiom Pro, eS, and gS users

WILSONVILLE, OR (February 7, 2018) – Big news for Raymarine users of all stripes! Raymarine is proud to announce the release of Lighthouse 3.3 software, which not only offers increased functionality for Axiom and Axiom Pro users, but boaters and anglers using Raymarine eS and gS Series units.

Across these unit families, the LightHouse 3.3 operating software update provides numerous enhancements and an even more intuitive, seamless, and fluid user experience.

RealVision 3D Depth Scale

Owners of current Raymarine eS and gS systems who upgrade to the latest LightHouse 3 operating system will experience faster performance and streamlined operation. They also have the option of networking eS and gS-Series multifunction displays with Axiom and Axiom Pro. The feature set and operation is identical regardless of whether you have an Axiom, Axiom Pro, eS-Series or gS-Series. eS and gS Series users will now be able to view RealVision 3D display data, provided there is an Axiom or Axiom Pro on the network.

Installing the new update is simple. Axiom owners can update wirelessly by connecting your MFD to your home Wi-Fi or your phone’s mobile hotspot. You can also download Lighthouse 3.3 via Raymarine’s web site here. Owners of eS and gS Systems will need to download their software update from Raymarine.com and then install it using a microSD card.

Disable All Sonars Quick Button

Lighthouse 3.3 Overview

RealVision 3D Historical Sensitivity

LH 3.3 adds full historical sensitivity adjustments to the RealVision 3D sonar channel. In LH 3.2, this feature was only available on the DownVision, SideVision and conventional CHIRP sonar channels. This feature allows users to instantly see adjustments to the sonar gain, sensitivity, intensity and surface filter in both the live sonar feed, as well as in the previously-imaged data. Users can now tweak the settings, and see the impact immediately in the sonar history. Sonar rewind allows users to scroll back to somewhere you’ve already imaged and reveal fish, bait or structure previously hidden. From there, it’s simple to drop a waypoint and return to the exact location.

Sirius XM Marine Weather

LH 3.3 brings SiriusXM Marine Weather to LH 3 for the first time. The weather mode is now fully integrated into the chart app. Weather data can be layered onto any navigation chart for easy display of storms, fronts, sea surface temperatures, wave heights and more. Full offshore, coastal and city forecasts are available, too.

RealVision 3D Depth Legend

In RealVision 3D, LH3.3. adds an optional legend to the RealVision 3D grid that defines target depth color-coding. When set to color targets by depth, this scale makes it even easier to tell at a glance how deep any given target is on the 3D display.

Battery Supply Voltage

Navionics Plotter Sync

LH 3.3 now supports Navionics Plotter Sync. When linked to the Navionics Boating app on your smartphone or tablet, a user’s LH3.3-enabled MFD can synchronize waypoints, routes and tracks with the Navionics App Recorded sonar logs can be synced and uploaded to Navionics for processing, and updates to your Navionics charts are synced back to your MFD. This means there is no need to ever remove your Navionics charts from the boat and you can easily keep them up-to-date.

‘Disable All Sonar’ Quick Button

For trailer-boat anglers and boaters with boat lifts, LH3.3 adds a quick button for “Disable All Sonar.” This instantly puts all sonar systems and transducers into standby, ensuring nothing is transmitting when the boat is out of the water. This is primarily a concern for the latest generation of  CHIRP Broadband transducers working at 1kW and above. These high-performance models do generate heat internally that is normally dissipated by the water. If the boat is on a trailer or boat lift, it is possible to damage them if that are left transmitting in the air.

Battery Voltage Display

For all boaters — especially kayak anglers and sailors — LH3.3 adds a new data item that displays the battery voltage being fed to the MFD. In prior versions, battery voltage could be displayed on-screen, but via a NMEA2000-compatible battery charging system. This additional data item reads the actual supply voltage being fed at the power cable plugged in the MFD. It can be displayed as a floating data item on any screen — or place it on the data bar.

Enhanced AIS Icon Overlay Mode on Radar

LH3.3 adds enhanced AIS icon overlay mode to radar display. Previously, this was only available on the chart display. Enhanced AIS icons are vessel-type specific (freighters, tankers, sailboats, yachts, etc.) so the icons are distinguishable from one another. At certain range scales, the icons are actually shown to-scale, too. Icons scale according to the actual length and width reported by their ship’s AIS transmission.

6 Ways To Rig Hog Style Creature Baits – MTB

6 Ways To Rig Hog Style Creature Baits

[print_link]

Hog style creature baits like the Catch co. Gator Hawg and the Zoom Brush Hog used to be one of the most popular bass fishing bait styles in the game. They feature a slim profile, flapping arms, and a curly tail – all things that attract bass big time.

In the last few years, however, they’ve been overshadowed slightly by newer and more compact style creature baits and craws. That’s unfortunate, because “hog” style baits never stopped catching bass – and for that reason 2018 may be prime time to get out there and fish one.

Here are 6 ways to rig a hog style creature bait.

1. Jig Trailers

Many folks would think them too long, but a little trimming turns a hog style bait into dynamite jig trailers that shows the bass something they probably haven’t seen. In lakes with big bass – don’t be afraid to go “whole hog” and thread the big boy on there without any trimming.

2. Hog Style Creature Baits On a Carolina rig

The old standby still works. They’re about as good a Carolina rigging bait as you can get. They hold up well, and provide the perfect target for bottom oriented bass.

3. Wobble Head

Another great solution – “Hogs” are irresistible when slowly crawling along the bottom on the back of a wobble head.

4. Weightless

This may not seem obvious, but weightless hog style creature baits skip surprisingly well, and shows something totally off the wall to bass hanging around shallow cover like docks and laydowns.

5. Texas Rigged Bed Fishing Bait

Texas rig a hog style creature, and you’ll be hard pressed to find a better bed fishing bait. They look pretty natural, and have all kinds of big fish appeal when worked right in a bedder’s face.

6. Hog Style Creature Baits On A Drop Shot

Say what? Yep, the narrow profile of a “hog” style creature bait looks amazing on a drop shot. Whether it’s full sized on a bubba shot, or a smaller model on a normal drop shot – bass won’t be able to resist it.

Raymarine Pro Bobby Lane

Wins Bassmaster Eastern Open

[print_link]

Florida pro goes wire-to-wire on hometown waters, fellow Raymarine pro Brandon Lester takes second

Kissimmee, FL (February 6, 2018) – Earlier this year, BASS Elite pro Bobby Lane made the decision to swing for the fences. “Rather than worry about getting paid, I decided to go out this season, stay deeper, and fish for big fish.”

This past weekend Lane’s resolution paid off, as Lane went wire-to-wire at the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Eastern Open on Florida’s Kissimmee Chain. For Lane, the win on hometown waters seemed a lifetime in the making.

“After being close so many times before, winning on the Kissimmee Chain was starting to elude me. Actually, it had become a burden. You can know too many spots, the weather starts changing, and panic can set in. Honestly, I was under a great deal of pressure right up to the end of the weigh-in on the final day,” admits Lane.

Fortunately, Lane had discovered something in practice that gave him a huge confidence boost.

“I knew I was on to something when I caught two five pounders in practice. The hurricane had blown some hydrilla away and changed other hydrilla spots—but if you could find the combination of hydrilla and holes in flat pads, Kissimmee grass, or sticks the hurricane had blown around, there were probably bass there. Didn’t matter if the hydrilla was off shore or three feet from the bank. I think the fish felt secure in the hydrilla with all the crazy weather we’ve had. They were either right in it or on the edges.”

Much of the fish-producing hydrilla was located with Lane’s electronics.

“I was running at 65 mph and could see bottom perfectly with my Raymarine Axiom Pro units. I might travel five miles, graph hydrilla on my screen, and stop and fish. I found five or six spots like that, three which paid off. Even though this is my home lake, I caught fish where I’ve never caught them before. The hurricane definitely changed the habitat. The real benefit of my electronics was being able to eliminate water quickly and keep the hydrilla lines in view on my bow unit,” says Lane.

Specifically, Lane’s Phoenix is installed with three Raymarine Axiom Pro 12 MFDs—two at the console and one on the bow.

“This is the first year I’ve fished tournament days with two units on the dash. It’s nice having two big screens running everything in full view or split screen to give me lots of info at the same time. The clarity and speed is absolutely amazing. If it looks like there’s a fish there, it’s a fish. The CHIRP Sonar, DownVision, SideVision, RealVision 3D, and how fast the mapping responds is just amazing.”

On Day 1, Lane says he didn’t get a lot of bites, but all the right ones. As boat five in the first flight from Lake Toho, Lane made it through two locks quickly, after which he caught a five pounder in Lake Hatchineha. Lane then ran to Kissimmee where he caught an 8-7 on a PowerBait Rib Toad, followed by a nine pounder on the south end of the lake. Two giant Florida bass in the livewell, he returned to Hatchineha where he boxed another five pounder. Lane made the decision to fish the last hour of the tournament on Lake Toho, where he caught a three-pounder prior to the 3 pm weigh-in.

“Day One was just phenomenal,” says Lane. He finished Day 1 in first place with a whopping 31-7 five-fish limit.

Lane repeated exactly the same process on Day 2, but didn’t find the big fish he wanted, weighing 10-9. Still, he entered the final day with a 10-pound-plus lead. Hatchineha and Toho produced an 18-pound sack for Lane on the final day, which cemented the wire-to-wire win. He finished with 60 pounds even and over $52,000 in winnings.

“The hydrilla wall pattern and those big fish saved me, which I wouldn’t have found without my Axiom units. I’m able to get solid bottom readings at 65 mph and the units are fast and responsive. It’s nothing to zoom in to the mapping with my finger or the knob and find spots just like the spots that produce fish. Bottom line is I can count on my Raymarine electronics when I need them.”

Fellow Raymarine pro Brandon Lester finished second at the event with 47 pounds, 11 ounces.

SAM RAYBURN RESERVOIR SET FOR COSTA FLW SERIES SOUTHWESTERN OPENER PRESENTED BY YETI

SAM RAYBURN RESERVOIR SET FOR COSTA FLW SERIES SOUTHWESTERN OPENER PRESENTED BY YETI

[print_link]

JASPER, Texas (Feb. 6, 2018) – More than 440 pros and co-anglers are set to open the Southwestern Division next week, Feb. 15-17, at the Costa FLW Series at Sam Rayburn Reservoir – the largest FLW Series event ever held on the fishery. The tournament, presented by YETI, is the first regular-season event scheduled in the FLW Series Southwestern Division. Hosted by the Jasper-Lake Sam Rayburn Area Chamber of Commerce, the event will feature anglers competing for a top award of up to $99,000, including a brand new Ranger Z518C boat with a 200-horsepower Evinrude outboard.

“The water is warming up, the weather has been mild and I’ve seen this before – the lake is setting up,” said FLW Tour pro Todd Castledine of Nacogdoches, Texas, who has 10 previous top-10 finishes – four wins – on Sam Rayburn in FLW competition. “We’re starting to see some big weights in the local events, and I think we could be hitting this tournament at just the right time. This is going to be a really fun event.

“I normally would never say this, but I don’t think that 20 pounds a day is going to cut it in this one,” Castledine continued. “There are so many big fish in Sam Rayburn that no lead is safe. A 33- or 34-pound limit is absolutely possible, especially the way the lake is setting up right now.”

Castledine predicted that this tournament would strictly be a prespawn event – no sight fishing or springtime patterns.

“You’re going to be able to catch them a lot of different ways,” he said. “The fish are staging all over the lake – in the grass and offshore. I don’t think you can win this tournament fishing just one way. I think you’re going to have to mix it up.

“The lake is getting better and better every year, and this year is no different,” Castledine went on to say. “The key will be finding an area or fish that you have to yourself, and then managing those fish over the three days of competition. We’re going to have to figure out how to catch some big ones – I think it will take 70 pounds to win this event.”

Anglers will take off and weigh-in at the Umphrey Family Pavilion, located at 5438 RR 255, in Brookeland. Takeoff will be held at 7 a.m. CST each day of competition and weigh-ins will start at 3 p.m. All takeoffs and weigh-ins are free to attend and open to the public.

In Costa FLW Series regular-season competition, payouts are based on the number of participants competing in the event. At Sam Rayburn pros will fish for a top prize of $99,000, including a brand new Ranger Z518C boat with a 200-horsepower Evinrude outboard if Ranger Cup qualified. Co-anglers will cast for a brand new Ranger Z175 boat with a 90-horsepower Evinrude outboard, and $5,000 if Ranger Cup qualified.

The Costa FLW Series consists of five U.S. divisions – Central, Northern, Southeastern, Southwestern and Western – along with the International division. Each U.S. division consists of three regular-season tournaments with competitors vying for valuable points that could earn them the opportunity to compete in the season-ending Costa FLW Series Championship. The 2018 Costa FLW Series Championship is being held Nov. 1-3 on Lake Guntersville in Guntersville, Alabama, and is hosted by the Marshall County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

GEORGIA’S MCCAY WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE SAVANNAH RIVER DIVISION OPENER ON LAKE KEOWEE PRESENTED BY NAVIONICS

SENECA, S.C. (Feb. 5, 2018) – Boater J.R. McCay of Helen, Georgia, caught five bass weighing 15 pounds, 7 ounces, Saturday to win the 2018 T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Savannah River Division opener on Lake Keowee presented by Navionics. For his efforts, McCay took home $4,004.

“I had a couple places where I was catching 10 or 11 pounds consistently during practice, but by 9 a.m. Saturday morning I didn’t have a bite from either,” said McCay, who earned his first career win in FLW competition. “I decided to head into the back of a creek on the north end that had stained water, laydowns, docks and stump flats. I threw a swimbait and only had one fish swirl on it, which told me they weren’t very active.”

McCay said he began flipping a ½-ounce brown Spot Sticker Casting Jig with a green-pumpkin-colored Strike King Rage Tail Craw trailer, and was able to put two 4-pounders and a 3-pounder in the boat. Around 2 p.m., he said that he left the area for a long flat with scattered rock on the main lake.

“I used the Spot Sticker and nabbed another 3-pounder,” said McCay. “I caught my last fish on the south end, in 70 feet of water, from a rock pile where fish typically school up. I guess I pulled up to the right place at the right time.”

McCay said he used a blueback-colored Tim Farley Custom Baits Pro X Swimbait to catch his last keeper.

The top 45 boaters and co-anglers in the region based on point standings, along with the five winners in each qualifying event, will be entered in the Oct. 18-20 BFL Regional Championship on Lake Norman in Huntersville, North Carolina. Boaters will compete for a top award of a Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude outboard and $20,000, while co-anglers will fish for a new Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude outboard.

The 2018 BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 128 tournaments throughout the season, five qualifying events in each division. The top 45 boaters and co-anglers from each division, along with the five winners of the qualifying events, will advance to one of six regional tournaments where they are competing to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American. The 2018 BFL All-American will be held May 31-June 2 at Cross Lake in Shreveport, Louisiana, and is hosted by the Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission. Top performers in the BFL can move up to the Costa FLW Series or even the FLW Tour.
