Bobby Lane Clinches Wire-To-Wire Win At Bassmaster Open On Kissimmee Chain

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Mobility and versatility were the keys ingredients for Lakeland, Fla., pro Bobby Lane who completed the wire-to-wire win at the first Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Eastern Open at Big Lake Toho Marina with a three-day total weight of 60 pounds.

After buoying his performance with a massive Thursday limit of 31 pounds, 7 ounces, Lane entered Friday with a 10 1/2-pound lead. Adding 10-9 pushed him to 42 even, with a 12-pound lead going into the final round. Saturday saw Lane slam the door shut by nabbing his third limit catch, this one totaling 18 pounds and leaving him with a 12-pound, 5-ounce winning margin.

“From start to finish, this has been amazing,” said Lane, who notched his first win since winning a 2009 Elite Series event on Kentucky Lake. “It was my time to catch a big sack. I’ve been so close before.

“To have grown up on Lake Kissimmee and Cypress, Hatchineha and Toho and to have my family here, it means the world to me. Man, this has been a long time coming.”

Thursday and Friday saw Lane locking down to Lake Kissimmee, where his first-round catch included a 9-pounder and an 8-7. Both of these fish qualified for Florida’s TrophyCatch program, which recognizes photo release largemouth bass of 8 pounds or more.

Lane said he would have preferred another shot at this chain’s southernmost lake, but the shorter Day 3 schedule, plus windier conditions, made him adjust his game plan.

“I couldn’t get down to Kissimmee because you run out of time on Day 3,” he said. “I didn’t want to take any chances, especially with the weather.

“I fished Lake Hatchineha, caught a few decent ones early and then the bite just quit on me. I ran into Toho at noon and ended up catching three quality fish.”

With the Kissimmee Chain unsettled by fluctuating temperatures before the tournament, plus a cold front arriving the afternoon on Friday, Lane mostly targeted hydrilla in 2 to 4 feet. The dense habitat allowed fish to move in and out with changing weather, while remaining in the same general area.

Lane caught his Day 3 fish on a 3/4-ounce Duel Hardcore lipless crankbait, a Texas-rigged Berkley Powerbait Max Scent The General stickworm and a Berkley Powerbait Max Scent Creature Hawk. With all of his presentations, Lane said his SpiderWire braid played a critical role in getting his fish out of the thick vegetation.

“I got nine keeper bites today, as opposed to 20 yesterday and 30 the day before,” he said. “I fished clean today and that’s what it takes to win one of these.”

Lane also won the Power-Pole Captain’s Cash Award of $500 for being the highest-placing angler who is registered and eligible and uses a client-approved product on his boat.

Brandon Lester or Fayetteville, Tenn., finished second with 47-11. The Elite Series pro said the key to his success was making a key adjustment from fishing a popper around lily pads, to punching into the cover.

“What I’ve learned is that when you’re catching them around the edges of those pads and they stop biting, a lot of times, they’ve moved up under those pads,” Lester said. “That’s when you can punch in there and catch them.”

Drew Cook of Midway, Fla., finished third with 43-3.

Garrett Rocamora of Lithia, Fla., won the $750 Phoenix Boats Big Bass award for the 9-pound, 3-ounce fish he caught on Thursday.

In the co-angler division, Steve Robbins of Piketon, Ohio, made the most of his first Florida fishing experience by claiming his own wire-to-wire win with a three-day total of 26-8.

“I came down here with a buddy of mine who talked me into fishing this with him, and it’s been a great experience,” Robbins said. “I caught an 8-pound, 1-ounce bass — the biggest bass I’ve caught in my life — on Thursday and that was awesome.”

Robbins caught his fish on Senkos, a Keitech Mag Wag swimming worm and a bladed swim jig.

Tony Sears of Dahlonega, Ga., earned the $250 Phoenix Boats Big Bass award for his 9-pound, 4-ounce bass.

The Kissimmee Sports Commission hosted the event.

The Real Ned Rig, Please Step Forward

Legendary angler Ned Kehde chronicles namesake lure & how to fish it

[print_link]

Ladson, SC (February 3, 2018) – Days on the water with Ned Kehde aren’t measured by pounds of bass in the livewell or by “5 good bites.” Rather, outings with the Hall of Fame fishing writer mostly distill down to clicks on a little handheld counting device; following many of Kehde’s daily, 4-hour forays, the clicker rolls to some number of bass and other fish greater than 100.

Dig a little deeper and you discover it’s not unheard of for a single, durable ElaZtech softbait — Kehde’s favorite — to have topped the century mark. According to Kehde, the all-time record was set by one particular 4-inch Z-Man Finesse WormZ, with which he caught 232 fish.

More recently, while testing a TRD HogZ — a relatively new 3-inch finesse bait — Kehde caught 55 bass in 69 minutes — all in frigid 41-degree water. “I mailed the HogZ back to Daniel Nussbaum of Z-Man,” noted Kehde, “after this one bait produced 112 fish. It was still in really good shape.”

.’

The man behind the method, Hall of Fame fishing writer, Ned Kehde says Midwest finesse fishing dates back to the 1950s.

The larger truth is Kehde remains chiefly responsible for developing an amazing fishing system his friend and fellow Hall of Fame writer Steve Quinn originally termed the Ned Rig. Though the ultra-finesse presentation runs counter to much of bass fishing’s mainstream, which often prefers beefy rods, stout line and jumbo jig-hooks, the unassuming Ned Rig has almost certainly captured more interest and acclaim by North American bassers than any other presentation in recent memory.

Even so, if you ask the humble Kehde — who isn’t interested in fame or being paid to promote any particular lure or brand — to talk about the origins of the phenomenal lure, he’s likely to defer to names like Chuck Woods and the legendary Guido Hibdon. “Probably less than one in ten anglers knows that Woods designed the Puddle Jumper, as well as the Beetle and Beetle Spin — three classic finesse lures — nor that he also created the first Texas-rigged jigworm.”

The simple jig and softbait set-up Kehde calls ‘so dad-gum good.’

Ned Rig Renaissance

In the 1950s, says Kehde, Woods was already fishing a version of the Ned Rig — a soft plastic ‘Beetle’ on a jighead with a spinning rod. “I believe Chuck Woods has probably caught more Kansas largemouth bass than any man in history.”

The next big development in the Ned Rig narrative occurred a half century later, the day Kevin VanDam showed Kehde an early ElaZtech bait while fishing together in 2006. VanDam put in Kehde’s hands a pack Strike King Zeros, an ultra-durable stickbait manufactured by the parent company of what would eventually become Z-Man Fishing. That same year, Kehde fished with Japanese bass legend Shinichi Fukae on Beaver Lake. “Fukae was using the same method we had adopted, retrieving a jigworm a few inches off bottom, reeling and shaking as it went along. It gave further credence to our Midwest style of finesse bassin’.”

Not long afterward, Kehde became a major fan of Z-Man’s unique ElaZtech baits. To this day, his favorite remains a green pumpkin ZinkerZ stickworm, cut in half to 2-1/2-inches, or a single 2-3/4-inch Finesse TRD. Kehde impales both on a 1/16-ounce Gopher Mushroom Head jig or a 1/15-ounce Z-Man Finesse ShroomZ. Interestingly, Kehde cherishes red jigheads, a tip gleaned from finesse expert Fukae.

To give his ElaZtech baits valuable buoyancy, Kehde soaks them in hot water and stretches them. “Or you can let the bass do it for you,” he adds. “The more bass you catch on each bait, the better it gets — the more the fish seem to bite it.

“Removing some of the salt makes the bait more buoyant, giving it a nice subtle glide. The buoyancy is key to our no-feel style of fishing. We can’t exactly explain it, but the more you feel the lure, the fewer bass you’ll catch and vice-versa. With light jigs and small hooks, big hooksets aren’t necessary. A lot of the success in fishing the lure comes down to instinct and intuition. And the fact the bait’s so good, it often does the heavy lifting for you.”

Six Secret Ned Rig Retrieves

So skilled and potent have Kehde and his loyal Midwest Finesse Network of anglers become at fishing Ned Rigs that the anglers have developed six unique retrieves — all effective, depending on the situation:

The Swim-Glide-Shake: “After the lure touches down, immediately begin shaking the rod, continuing to constantly shake as it sinks toward bottom. Throughout the retrieve, keep the lure swimming slowly from six inches to one foot above bottom. The glide comes in as we stop turning the reel handle and allow the lure to pendulum toward the bottom.”

The Hop-and-Bounce: “Drop the rod to the five-o’clock position after the cast and hold it there. Shake the rod as the lure falls to the bottom. After it touches down, hop it up by rotating the reel handle twice, and then pause. As the lure falls back, we shake the rod. Repeat this cadence throughout the retrieve.”

The Drag-and-Deadstick: “This is normally performed by the angler in the back of the boat; it shines in water up to 12 feet deep. Cast toward the shoreline and shake the rod as the lure sinks. Rod held at 3- or 4-o’clock, the angler drags the lure slowly across bottom as the boat moves along the shoreline. As the boat moves, peel some line off the spool, creating slack and allowing the lure to lie dead-still for five seconds. You can occasionally shake the rod after the deadstick routine.”

The Straight Swim: Primarily executed with a single-tailed grub on a 1/16- or 1/32-ounce jig, this long-cast tactic works with the wind at your back, when bass are foraging on wind-blown shorelines. Depending on wind, hold your rod at 2- to 5-o’clock and simply turn the reel handle at a slow to moderate speed. You can enhance it with shakes and pauses, too.

The Drag-and-Shake: “After we’ve reached bottom, we turn the reel handle just fast enough to get the lure to slowly travel along the bottom. As it does, we twitch our wrist, shaking the rod, line and lure.”

Kehde’s actual jig and Finesse WormZ, 232 fish later.

You’d never guess Kehde has caught 112 bass and other fish on this very Z-Man TRD HogZ.

Strolling: “When bass are on massive, featureless flats — especially in winter on flatland reservoirs — we use the trolling motor to move our jigs along bottom, a great ploy for locating schools of fish. The angler on the trolling motor casts to the starboard side at about a 45-degree angle toward the back of the boat. A second angler does the same on the left side, while the person in the back merely casts straight back. When the baits of the two anglers in the front of the boat reach directly behind the boat, they retrieve and re-deploy their original casts.”

Kehde concludes: “It’s the only way I fish anymore. Simple. Affordable. And so dad-gum good at catching boatloads of bass and other species, it’s almost ridiculous.”

Lake Martin Event Will Kick Off The 2018 Bassmaster Elite Series Schedule

Bassmaster Elite Series pro and Alabama resident Dustin Connell will be one of 110 competitors at the Bassmaster Elite at Lake Martin presented by Econo Lodge out of Alexander City, Ala., Feb. 8-11. Lake Martin is the first stop on the 2018 Bassmaster Elite Series tour.

Lake Martin Event Will Kick Off The 2018 Bassmaster Elite Series Schedule

[print_link]

ALEXANDER CITY, Ala. — It’s been almost four months since Brandon Palaniuk raised the trophy at the final Bassmaster Elite Series event of 2017, but the long countdown to a new season is nearly done.

The 2018 Bassmaster Elite Series will make its first-ever visit next week to Lake Martin, a 44,000-acre impoundment on the Tallapoosa River, for the Bassmaster Elite at Lake Martin presented by Econo Lodge. Competition will take place Feb. 8-11, with daily takeoffs at 6:15 a.m. CT from Wind Creek State Park and weigh-ins back at the park each day at 2:30 p.m.

A 110-angler field will be battling for a $100,000 first-place prize.

Chad Miller, an Eclectic, Ala., angler who won the Alabama B.A.S.S. Nation Championship on Martin in November, said a number of styles could lead to success in the event.

“You can catch them right now in 1 foot of water all the way out to 40 feet of water,” Miller said. “I think it’s anybody’s ball game because of that. I think it could be won with 12 pounds a day — and if somebody can find a couple of 5-pounders, they can blow it away for sure.”

Miller said he recently caught a 5-pound spotted bass at Martin in less than 2 feet of water. But the bigger fish on the lake are usually largemouth, and the winning angler will likely need a good mixed bag each day.

That combination of species — coupled with the mystery surrounding the venue — will make for an interesting tournament dynamic.

During the offseason, B.A.S.S. officials enacted a rule that prohibits Elite Series competitors from accepting information from outside sources about fishing locations in lakes on the tournament schedule from outside sources. Since the 13-year-old Elite Series has never visited Lake Martin — and none of the B.A.S.S. Opens circuits have been there in more than a decade — less than half the anglers in this year’s Elite field have had significant experience on the lake.

“There are certainly some veterans in the field who have fished down there, but it’s been a long time for them,” said B.A.S.S. Tournament Director Trip Weldon. “You also have some local guys like Matt Herren, Greg Vinson and Kelley Jaye who have done a lot of fishing there.”

For those who fished competitively on Martin, whatever knowledge they bring to Thursday’s first round will have to have been compiled during the pre-practice period before the lake went off-limits on Jan. 8 or during the three official practice days Feb. 5-7.

“It’s definitely one of the more unknown commodities on the schedule this year,” Weldon said.

Ironically, Weldon knows the lake about as well as anyone, having won numerous major events there as a tournament angler. He also finished second in the 1999 Bassmaster Eastern Invitational on Martin, a year before he took over as regular tournament director for B.A.S.S.

“This is kind of a unique event for me as a tournament director, but also as a seasoned tournament angler on Lake Martin,” Weldon said. “I’ve fished there for 40 years now. I’ve fished literally hundreds of tournaments on that lake.”

Martin would normally be about 10 to 12 feet below full pool this time of year, but as of Wednesday, it was down less than 8 feet. Weldon said he believes it will take about 55 pounds to win the four-day event.

“It’s not going to be a Toledo Bend or Sam Rayburn-type tournament where you see a lot of 20-pound bags,” Weldon said. “A 20-pound bag could certainly happen, but I’m going to say it probably won’t. I think we could see a lot of 17- and 18-pound bags.”

With more than 700 miles of shoreline and a higher-than-normal lake level, Weldon said there will be plenty of room for the field to spread out — and like his friend Miller, he believes the tournament could be won with a variety of techniques.

“I fished a tournament on Jan. 6 when it was 19 degrees at takeoff,” Weldon said. “Our first fish came out of 2 feet of water, and we also caught fish 30-feet deep that day.”

With plenty of smaller spotted bass likely to come to the scales, the separating factor, he agreed, will be finding a big fish or two each day.

“You need that 3- to 5-pound kicker,” Weldon said. “If you can have one of those in your bag every day with a good limit of spots, you’ll be in the running.

“I’m looking forward to seeing what the lake can do.”

The event will be hosted by the Alexander City Chamber of Commerce.

Lane Extends Lead On Kissimmee Chain At Bassmaster Eastern Open

Lane Extends Lead On Kissimmee Chain At Bassmaster Eastern Open

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Bobby Lane has seen both ends of the weigh-in order, but after Friday’s second round of competition on Florida’s Kissimmee Chain of Lakes, he remains atop the first Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Eastern Open with a two-day total of 42 pounds.

The Bassmaster Elite Series pro from Lakeland, Fla., launched in the first flight on Thursday, but today’s later departure greatly delayed his access to the area he’s targeting on Lake Kissimmee. Lane added 10-9 to his first day’s weight of 31-7 — the tournament’s largest catch.

“Yesterday, I caught a few pretty early and today I didn’t even get down there until 10 o’clock,” Lane said. “I’m not sure if that hurt me; but it didn’t help me, by any means. I enjoyed my time in Toho this morning (before locking down to Lake Kissimmee) and caught quite a few fish.

“I thought they were going to bite today. I thought ‘Late flight, I’m gonna see ‘em.’ But they just never showed up.”

Despite weighing a third of his first round effort, Lane still holds a lead of 12 pounds — a pound and a half more than yesterday. This, he said, exemplifies the need to capitalize on opportunities like those of Day 1.

“This is Florida, and it’s all about a big bite. If you have an opportunity to catch those big ones, you want to put them in the boat,” he said. “Yesterday was flawless for me and today, I fished okay. I missed a couple of decent fish. My goal was to catch five and maintain the lead, and that’s what I did.

“But to have a big day like yesterday; you have to have that. It’s hard to be consistent on these lakes, especially with the fronts coming in and out this time of year.”

Targeting a diverse array of shallow vegetation, Lane mixed up his presentations with a variety of baits. He caught bass on a swimjig, a topwater plug and the new Berkley Powerbait Max Scent stickworm called The General. Rigging this junebug colored bait on a 5/0 Trokar hook with two different size weights, Lane fished with inspiration from his 13-year-old daughter, Alexis.

“About a month ago, my daughter whooped me with that bait, so I said ‘Enough of this,’ and I put about 10 bags in the boat,” Lane said. “I’m down to three.”

Friday brought more warmth and partly sunny skies, but the Kissimmee Chain felt more wind, as another cold front moved into the area late in the afternoon. Lane said this might have had an impact on his day, but he’s pleased that his huge Thursday catch positioned him to absorb the downturn.

“Ten pounds is just an average bag, but yesterday was the dream of a lifetime,” Lane said. “I just wanted to come in and see how bad it was, but to have the lead when I looked at (the leaderboard) on my phone, I was like ‘Golly, this is better than I thought.’

“To add to it a little bit doesn’t hurt, and I’m excited about tomorrow. There are some big ones out there to be caught.”

Walt Bowen of Walnut Cove, N.C., is in second place with 30-0. Making a big move from 47th place on Thursday, Bowen caught his limit by dragging a worm around shallow vegetation.

“I did the same thing today that I did yesterday, and I’m not going to make any changes,” he said.

Michael Purvis of Canton, Ga., is in third place with 29-10. Targeting prespawn bass with reaction baits, Purvis said he caught his fish in spurts with the active periods spaced about 45 minutes apart.

Garrett Rocamora of Lithia, Fla., remains in the lead for Phoenix Boats Big Bass honors with his 9-3 caught on Thursday.

“The Huk All Weather Suit”
An honest review from a blue-collar angler

[print_link]

Huk has jumped into the lead as one of the most well-known and popular fishing apparel brands around. With major sponsors like Kevin Van Dam and Brandon Palaniuk, and some pretty dope colors and patterns, it’s no wonder Huk has caught the eyes of many tournament anglers. Their quality seems to speak for itself for the most part, as well as their infamous fairly steep prices. There is one product Huk makes that has always caught my eye in particular and been an interest to me; The Huk All Weather Suit.

As an angler who fishes cold weather, and at times EXTREMELY cold weather, this product was the first to catch my attention. Seeing Brandon Palaniuk wear it in the snow fishing in frigid conditions peaked my curiosity even further, so I decided to break down and try the product for myself and write my own review of the supposed “all weather” clothing.

The biggest hesitation I had for trying the All Weather Suit was its steep price point. The product retails on Huk’s website for $224.99 for the jacket and $224.99 for the bibs, so obviously it’s not cheap for the recreational angler. Huk also makes a NEXT LEVEL All Weather suit which retails for $349.99 for the bibs and $349.99 for the matching jacket. I have NOT purchased or used the NEXT LEVEL suit yet. So for the sake of this review, I am only going to be referring to the original All Weather Suit, which I purchased and tested for myself.

The first thing I noticed when I received my All Weather Suit was that it definitely seemed like high quality, with a lot of thought and attention to detail. The straps on the bibs and stitching attaching them seemed very strong and thick, it seemed like there would be no worries of rips for a very long time at least. The zippers are also well thought out, you can tell by just zipping them that they are 100% water proof and there are no worries of getting wet. Being 100% waterproof was not much of a worry for me with this suit honestly, as you can check out a video on YouTube of a guy wearing the suit and being sprayed with a garden hose and still staying completely dry.

My biggest concern buying this suit was this: Will it keep me warm all day outside in temperatures less than 30 degrees?
The suit and bibs are VERY thin. They are definitely not insulated. So as an angler who fishes in the winter, this was a big concern for me. I decided to put it to the test and go out in the cold on Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia with just the suit and some warm under layers. I wore thermal pants and a thermal shirt under it, along with just blue jeans and a hoodie under the suit and bibs. Surprisingly, I stayed fairly warm out in the Virginia cold, morning temps in mid-20’s, rising to the low 50’s, heading back to the upper 30’s at the end of the day! The biggest thing about this suit is that it is 100% windproof; Huk does not exaggerate about that. Going 65mph+ down the lake in my boat, I did not feel the wind at all against me and that kept me warm by just keeping the air out. My biggest complaint would be with the hood on the jacket. While on plane with the boat and the hood pulled up and strapped around my face, it felt like it was putting a lot of pressure on my face and was fairly uncomfortable, so I would suggest using something different for the boat ride to keep your face warm. The biggest upside of these bibs compared to my heavier thermal suit and ice fishing bibs/jacket is that it is so MUCH lighter and easier to move around in. The suit has elastic-type material that makes it very comfortable to bend over and move in compared to other thick insulated clothing.

While I stayed warm riding in the boat, I did begin to get a slight chill by the end of the day out in the frigid weather. This wasn’t bad, but scared me a little considering it was only around 32 degrees that day and I fish in elements lower than that at times. Braving these temps in my ice fishing bibs/jacket, I did not experience cold due to the insulation.

Overall, the Huk All Weather bib is a high quality product and definitely more comfortable than any other bibs/jacket I have worn and tried. Its high price tag makes it difficult to justify, but if you’re not concerned about money and looking for the best, I would say this suit is it! If you intend to use the suit for cold weather, I would suggest ordering a size bigger to compensate for wearing heavy jackets and layers under it (which you will need). I am 6’3” and 240lbs and XL was not big enough, I need the XXL to compensate for the clothing underneath.

I love this suit, it’s just hard to justify considering the price. I plan to keep wearing it in all weather, just as the name says… A storm, hurricane, snow, hail, you name it. However, when the weather gets extremely cold, less than 30 degrees, and I have to be outside fishing a tournament all day, I might keep my ice fishing suit handy for those temperatures. That’s my experience, but you be the judge! If you have any questions for me about the suit feel free to contact me on Instagram @Ben_Hudson_Fishing.

Tight Lines!

The State Largemouth Bass Record For Every State In America

[print_link]

Any angler would be lying if they said they’ve never dreamed about catching a monster fish, whether it’s a 10 pounder, a new PB, or even a state record. It’s a thought that has crossed all of our minds.

We’ve compiled a list of the State Largemouth Bass Record from 49 states (no largies in Alaska) to help serve as a reference on the quality of fish swimming in your home state. Some records date back to George S Perry’s world record bass in 1922 while others state records seem to be broken every year. Either way, we all could literally be one cast away from from the bass fishing record books.

Fishing Community Celebrates 50th Anniversary With 2018 Bassmaster Classic in March

The first Bassmaster Classic (top) pitted 24 anglers against one another for a $10,000 winner-take-all prize. The 2015 Classic at Greenville, S.C., packed the weigh-in arena to watch Casey Ashley earn a $300,000 payday. The Classic returns to South Carolina March 16-18.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — It’s been called the “Test of the Best” bass anglers, the “Super Bowl of Bass Fishing” and the “World Championship of Fishing.” By any name, the Bassmaster Classic became the salvation of Ray Scott’s Bass Anglers Sportsman Society (B.A.S.S.) when the tournament was launched 47 years ago.

Now known as the GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, the annual bass tournament began modestly with just 24 competitors in October 1971. Arkansas angler Bobby Murray won the inaugural Classic, held on Lake Mead, Nevada.

Scott recalls that the lakeside weigh-ins attracted only a handful of spectators. More important than crowds, however, were the two-dozen outdoor writers who attended at Scott’s invitation. Their articles in major publications across the United States lent legitimacy to the fledgling, mainly southern, sport of tournament bass fishing.

Founded 50 years ago, B.A.S.S. struggled for attention in the beginning. The B.A.S.S. Tournament Trail — the first national fishing circuit — was popular among bass anglers but lacked broader exposure until Scott and then-Bassmaster Magazine editor Bob Cobb concocted the season-ending championship.

“It was the turning point,” said former tournament director Harold Sharp, now deceased. “It’s become the thing everybody points to. It’s as high as an angler can go.” B.A.S.S. membership grew rapidly after that first Classic, and the event itself quickly became the most important event in sportfishing. Many industry insiders consider the birth of B.A.S.S. and its tournament circuits to mark the beginning of the modern era of bass fishing and the spark that ignited an economic boom in sportfishing.

When the 48th Classic takes place March 16-18 on Lake Hartwell at Anderson, S.C., it will be unrecognizable compared to its meager beginnings. From 24 outdoor writers who were paired with the pros in 1971, the Classic press corps has grown to more than 200 credentialed media representatives from throughout the United States, as well as Canada, Japan, Australia and the United Kingdom.

The prize for claiming the first Classic crown was $10,000, winner take all. The event today pays out $1 million to the 52 qualifiers, including $300,000 to the champion.

Weigh-ins for the first 10 Bassmaster Classics were held at lakeside, but as crowds grew, Scott decided to move weigh-ins indoors, beginning in his hometown of Montgomery, Ala., in 1981. A boat and tackle show was added that year.

“The Classic Outdoors Expo presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods has become a highlight of Classic Week for thousands of fans,” said B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin, who noted that the combined attendance at Classic venues has averaged more than 100,000 for the past six years.

“It has become the biggest and most important consumer tackle show in the nation,” Akin added, “and numerous manufacturers have chosen the Outdoors Expo to debut new lures, rods, reels, boats and motors for the coming season.”

The Expo will be held March 16-18 and cover 250,000 square feet of floor space in the TD Convention Center in Greenville, S.C. Weigh-ins will be in the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in downtown Greenville those days. Attendance at weigh-ins in 2015, the last time the Classic was held in Greenville and Anderson, exceeded 10,000 on weekend afternoons.

Early morning takeoffs, when the pro anglers head out for a day of fishing, have become popular activities for fans, as well. More than 2,000 braved the 10-degree temperature to witness the opening takeoff at Green Pond Landing at Anderson on Hartwell in February 2015.

One of the biggest developments in the evolution of the Classic has been its impact on local economies. Las Vegas barely noticed that 60 or so people were in town for a three-day tournament in 1971. In Greenville next month, more than 4,000 room nights have already been booked just for anglers, expo exhibitors, B.A.S.S. staff and others associated with the event.

Fans traveling from throughout the nation will bring that total to 11,000 room nights, according to Michael Mulone, director of Event and Tourism Partnerships for B.A.S.S. Altogether, Mulone said, economic impact for the Greenville/Anderson area is expected to exceed $24 million.

Clearly, Ray Scott’s Las Vegas Classic gamble, almost 50 years ago, has paid off.

UPDATE ON ANGLERS INVOLVED IN BOATING ACCIDENT AT FLW TOUR ON LAKE OKEECHOBEE

UPDATE ON ANGLERS INVOLVED IN BOATING ACCIDENT AT FLW TOUR ON LAKE OKEECHOBEE

[print_link]

MINNEAPOLIS (Feb. 1, 2018) – Pro competitors Andy Young of Mound, Minnesota, and William Campbell of Middlesboro, Kentucky, were involved in a boat collision on opening day of the FLW Tour at Lake Okeechobee last week. The collision happened while both anglers were running the lake and met at the end of a boat lane near Moonshine Bay. Co-angler James Bianchi of Rush, New York, was in Young’s boat, while Lee Frye of Brooksville, Florida, was the co-angler in Campbell’s boat.

Young and Bianchi were ejected, but were able to return to their boat after Young’s mandatory ignition shutoff device disengaged the engine. While damaged, both boats returned under their own power to the launch site at the Clewiston Boat Basin.

Young sought medical attention upon his return to the ramp and was admitted to a local medical facility. He has since been released. Bianchi, Campbell and Frye declined medical attention.

The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission is currently investigating the accident.

Young’s catch was weighed and he finished the day with five bass weighing 10 pounds even. He was unable to compete on Day Two and finished the tournament in 179th place. Campbell and Frye were late in their return to check-in and they both withdrew from the tournament. Bianchi continued competition and finished in 22nd place, weighing in 10 bass for 20 pounds, 15 ounces and earning $1,000.

Both Young and Campbell plan to return to the FLW Tour this season.

“It was an accident, plain and simple,” said Campbell, who was fishing in just his second career FLW Tour event. “I’ve been on the water and driving boats for more than 30 years, and I’d never had an accident like this. It’s very unfortunate that it occurred, but I’m extremely thankful that it wasn’t worse.

“This isn’t going to stop me from competing,” Campbell continued. “Becoming a pro bass angler has been a dream of mine since I was 15 years old. For this to happen, on the first day of my first full season, is very disappointing. I will not let this stop me.”

“I’m sore, but I’ll heal and I’m thankful that the accident wasn’t worse,” Young said. “The doctor said that I have a compression fracture in my L2 vertebra – no surgery, but I’ll be in a brace for a few weeks. I’m extremely upset that I’m going to have to miss the Harris Chain tournament and maybe even Lanier, but I’m recovering and you can bet that I will be back out competing on the Tour as soon as I am able.”

Lane Leaps Into First-Day Lead With Huge Limit In Bassmaster Open On Kissimmee

Bobby Lane of Lakeland, Fla., took the lead on the first day of the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Eastern Open No. 1 held on Kissimmee Chain of Lakes out of Kissimmee, Fla. Lane brought 31 pounds, 7 ounces to the scales at Thursday’s weigh-in.

Lane Leaps Into First-Day Lead With Huge Limit In Bassmaster Open On Kissimmee

[print_link]

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Bobby Lane is no astrologist, but he threw some serious props to the heavenly bodies in the wake of his massive Day 1 limit that weighed 31 pounds, 7 ounces, and took the lead at the first Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Eastern Open on Florida’s Kissimmee Chain of Lakes.

The first angler to cross the stage at Big Lake Toho Marina, the Bassmaster Elite Series pro from Lakeland, Fla., said he started the day with a solid game plan, but the morning unfolded with big-time encouragement that would put him 10 pounds, 8 ounces ahead of his nearest competitor.

“When you start the day with a full moon in the west and the sun’s coming up in the east, you have to know there’s going to be some big ones caught,” Lane said. “I had a perfect little milk run, and it went to plan.”

Fishing a variety of habitat features from junk mats to buggy whips to Kissimmee grass to hydrilla to vine mat, Lane said he had about 15 to 20 bites today, the largest of which was a 9-pounder.

Lane said he caught fish on a variety of baits: “I caught one on a swim jig, two good ones flipping. I caught a big one on a swim jig, and I caught another one casting a worm. I think they’re trying to spawn, some aren’t, some are; some are staging.

“I made a lot of adjustments today. It was having the right things on the deck at the right time and picking up the right rod when something looked a little different. Everything was on 50- to 65-pound SiderWire Ultracast braid. When I hooked them, they were ‘buried.’”

Lane began his day by making the long run down to Lake Kissimmee, where he caught four of his limit fish. He boated the fifth late in the day after running up-chain to finish his day in Lake Toho.

Obviously pleased with his big bag, Lane said he was equally gratified by a high-percentage performance.

“It was quite a phenomenal day; I fished clean and caught every fish that bit, except for maybe one small fish,” he said. “Today was about execution, and when you have a bag like that, you made the right decisions.

“I ran that Phoenix/Yamaha from Lake Toho all the way to the Highway 60 Bridge. I covered a lot of water and when I got there, I made the right connection.”

Lane’s competence could very well prove to be the linchpin of long-term success, as the first round of the three-day contest found the fertile Kissimmee Chain a little on the stingy side. Understandable, as Florida-strain largemouth bass do not handle weather changes gracefully.

While Day 1 delivered a pleasant pallet of conditions, with light winds, temperatures rising into the low 70s and mostly sunny skies turning overcast by the afternoon; the lakes simply have not settled from Tuesday’s cold front. Suffice it to say, many anglers lamented head-scratching inconsistency.

Lane said he’s confident he can turn in another solid effort on Friday. He has multiple spots that he protected in practice and never fully taxed during Day 1.

“My goal in practice was to catch a big one and then leave the area and don’t go back — that’s what I did,” Lane said. “The biggest fish I caught in practice was 6 pounds. I just told myself that if you catch one good one, there should be some more good ones moving up in the same areas and that’s what happened.

“I couldn’t be more excited about tomorrow; I think I have a fairly decent area, and I didn’t hit it really hard today.”

Garrett Rocamora of Lithia, Fla., placed second with 20-15. Spending most of his day in Lake Kissimmee, the Florida pro anchored his catch with a 9-pound, 3-ounce largemouth that bit late in the day and took over the lead for Phoenix Boats Big Bass honors.

“This time of the year, the later the better; if you’re on ’em, you need to be there late,” he said. “It was a slow day; we probably caught 16 to 17 fish total, but I knew where I’ve had fish so I just had to slow down and get enough for today.”

Rocamora said he was mostly targeting prespawn bass with a mix of flipping/pitching baits and reaction baits. Positioning proved essential for thoroughly working his area.

“Being able to Power-Pole down and pick apart an area was key,” said Rocamora, referring to his Power-Pole shallow-water anchor.

Don Eady of Orlando, Fla., is in third place with 19-13.

In the co-angler division, Ohio’s Steve Robbins took the lead with 15-7. Fishing shallow, he buoyed his effort with an 8-pound, 1-ounce fish. Clint Sterling’s 8-7 leads in the Phoenix Boats Big Bass competition on the co-angler side.

Friday’s takeoff is scheduled for 7 a.m. ET at Big Lake Toho Marina. The weigh-in will be held at the same location at 3 p.m.

The event is hosted by the Kissimmee Sports Commission.
