A SOFT SOLUTION FOR KAYAK FISHING’S HARD PROBLEM

PLANO’S NEW SOFT CRATE TRANSFORMS LOW-TECH KAYAK TACKLE STORAGE INTO A CUTTING-EDGE ADVANTAGE

[print_link]

Plano, IL (January 29, 2017) – Kayak fishing is all the rage for one very good reason: it simplifies things. Kayaks don’t take up a lot of space, they are easy to transport, have an eco-friendly footprint and, most importantly, allow anglers to go places others in big boats can only dream of. This incredibly effective and rewarding style of fishing offers unprecedented stealth with minimal investment.

Still, kayak fishing has its challenges. ‘Yak anglers are still anglers, which means most have a bunch of gear. They need to put all that fishing stuff somewhere, and there isn’t exactly a ton of space to work with.

Until now, the paddle crowd has largely been forced to adapt big boat fishing tools to their relatively tiny vessels. Thankfully, many kayak anglers have strong DIY tendencies, and many homespun tackle storage solutions have focused on the venerable and readily available milk crate. Great effort, folks. Now allow the pros at Plano to finish what you’ve started.

New for 2018, the Plano Soft Crate turns the simple milk crate into an incredibly versatile, modern tackle storage option. In fact, the Soft Crate is so ideal, one can expect to see them employed in all kinds of craft – even the big ones with motors. Fresh out of milk crates? Worry not; the adaptable Soft Crate is completely capable of standing alone – minus the repurposed exoskeleton.

The lightweight Plano Soft Crate is made of durable water-resistant fabric, and is simple to transport with side storage panels that fold up to form a sturdy carry handle. An adjustable, padded shoulder strap is also provided. The four-panel design is shaped and sized to fit inside a standard 13” x 13” milk crate or rest directly on the deck of kayak, boat or dock as a freestanding crate alternative. The large, open interior has multiple compartments that accept up to nine 3700-size StowAway utility boxes and can also function as bulk storage. The lid offers additional storage with the added security and convenience of a zippered pocket. Outside, the Soft Crate’s handsome gray exterior with red accents sports numerous D-rings, tool holders and MOLLE webbing for easy access to pliers, hook removers and other essential fishing accessories. The Soft Crate’s various segments and panels are secured by straps and buckles, which allow for easy removal and customization to individual angler needs.

Kayak anglers now have a soft solution in the form of the versatile and affordable Soft Crate, and a hard option in the premium V-Crate – two brand new tackle management systems specifically designed to elevate the kayak angling experience from the pioneers of practicality at Plano.

5 Key Ingredients for Awesome Early Prespawn Action By Walker Smith

Follow these guidelines to find fat prespawn bass before anyone else does.

We’re quickly approaching my favorite time of the year. While the meat of the prespawn bite may not be here yet, the early prespawn bite will be here before you know it. I’ve been waiting all year long and I’m getting antsy just writing about it.

In my opinion, this is absolutely the best time of the year to catch a true giant. A lot of the other anglers are still finishing up their hunting seasons and honey-do lists, which means you might have this special bite all to yourself. If you’re smart about how you approach this time of year, you can have some ridiculous days on the water.

I put the boat in for a few hours this weekend and I’ve already started finding some eager prespawners ripe for the picking—in just 44-degree water. After thinking on it for a few days, I wanted to share my most important considerations with you.

FLW PAIRS WITH USA BASS TO HOST FIRST PAN-AMERICAN BASS FISHING CHAMPIONSHIP

[print_link]

MINNEAPOLIS (Jan. 29, 2018) – Fishing League Worldwide (FLW), the world’s largest tournament-fishing organization, announced today that they will assist USA Bass in their efforts to showcase the first ever Pan-American Bass Fishing Championship, Feb. 4-9, on Lake Okeechobee in Clewiston, Florida. The championship event, which was awarded to USA Bass by the Pan-American Sportfishing Delegation, will feature anglers from 41 nations and is part of a larger effort by the Confederation Internationale de Peche Sportive (CIPS) to make bass fishing an Olympic sport.

“The international fishing community is thrilled about this event,” said tournament organizer and CIPS Vice President John Knight. “It fits perfectly into the global initiative to increase participation in bass fishing. Steps like this are making bass fishing the frontrunner when fishing becomes an Olympic sport.”

The legendary Roland and Mary Ann Martin’s Marina & Resort in Clewiston is set to host the historic event. Knight said the Martin’s resort plays an essential role in providing anglers the best bass fishing experience in the world.

“Mary Ann, Scott and Roland Martin are legends of the sport and huge supporters of USA Bass,” said Knight. “Bass anglers from across the Americas are excited about fishing such an important event on one the world’s most famous bass fishing lakes.”

Teams will arrive Feb. 4 for the opening ceremony, followed by practice Feb. 5-6. Competition kicks off Feb. 7-8 with takeoff scheduled for 7:30 a.m. EST each day from the Clewiston Boat Basin. Weigh-ins each day will be held at 3:30 p.m. at Roland and Mary Ann Martin’s Marina & Resort. A medal presentation will follow the final weigh-in.

FLW is actively working with USA Bass and CIPS to grow the worldwide bass-fishing audience. FLW currently sanctions bass tournaments in Canada, China, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Portugal, South Africa and Spain. Each country qualifies anglers to compete in the Costa FLW Series Championship, and eventually the Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of professional bass fishing. For more information about FLW’s global initiatives, visit FLWFishing.com.

USA Bass is part of U.S. Angling, a 501c3 charitable organization that supports the USA Bass team as they compete in Pan-American and World Championship fishing events around the globe. To learn more about USA Bass, and for a complete schedule of events, visit USABass.org.

Chicago Team Wins Bassmaster High School Central Open On Toledo Bend

Chicago Team Wins Bassmaster High School Central Open On Toledo Bend

MANY, La. — Scott Springer and Trust Say, a pair of 17-year olds from the Chicago area, used a noontime flurry of big bass bites to power past the 241 other teams competing on Toledo Bend Reservoir on Sunday in the Mossy Oak Fishing Bassmaster High School Central Open presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods.

The teens, who are part of the Christy, Springer and Say Community Club, boated a five-bass limit that weighed 21 pounds, 7 ounces, which was more than 2 pounds heavier than the second-place duo. That catch propelled Springer and Say into the High School national championship tournament, which will be held at an undisclosed location later this year. In all, 24 of the 242 teams (the Top 10 percent) earned a berth in the championship with their showing on Toledo Bend.

“I’m still in shock,” Springer said not long after he and Say hoisted the championship trophies above their heads to the delight of many hundreds of fans at Cypress Bend Park.

“I’m speechless,” Springer told the crowd.

Instead, the Illinois residents let their fishing do the talking. They had approximately 6 pounds of bass on board at noon. But they didn’t fret, despite BASSTrakk showing other teams pushing the pace ahead of them. They remained calm, they said, mainly because their best spot in practice was located off a point that had been most productive in the afternoon sunshine.

So when the sun shot through overcast skies late Sunday morning, Springer and Say headed straight there.

A quick electronics check had them giddy, as a 10-mph morning breeze stacked baitfish into their spot. Springer and Say started throwing Alabama Rigs toward the point from about 20 yards away and hardly had to let the lures fall through the water column before getting bit.

They had approximately 12 bites in the span of an hour, including a 7-pounder that anchored their total. There was enough weight in the livewell, in fact, that the team removed the divider from its center to allow more space.

“The bites were coming in about 8 to 10 feet of water,” Say said. “And they were coming fast.”

The biggest bite was a thrill for both anglers.

“I was burning that A-Rig pretty fast,” Springer said. “I was throwing it on a Shimano rod and reel. The big fish was the last one of the day. I wasn’t expecting it at all. I hooked into him and I just knew it was a giant. I told my partner ‘Get the net, because this is what we need.’”

Say said the big bass didn’t get a clean bite on the Alabama rig, so getting it into the net was a careful process.

“I had to kind of slide the net up under it,” Say said. “(The rig) was in the corner of his mouth. I said ‘Oh no!’ It was pretty scary.”

Once that kicker bass was in the boat, Springer and Say breathed a sigh of relief. Still, the teens only thought they had about 19 pounds, but they took the hot seats early in the weigh-in, and were there until the very end.

The victory provided Springer and Say with a bounty of prizes. They won $2,000 for their fishing team, and they picked up a $250 gift certificate from Mossy Oak, as well as an Abu Garcia rod/reel combo. The win also earned them a combined $20,000 scholarship offer to compete with the McKendree University fishing team.

The fact that McKendree also is located in Illinois is an added bonus, they said.

“It’s an incredible feeling,” Springer said.

Christopher Capdeboscq and Forrest Lagarde of Northlake Christian School in Covington, La., finished second with 19-4. That earned them trophies, $1,500 for their school, a $250 Mossy Oak certificate and Abu Garcia rod/reel combos. Grayson Morris and Tucker Smith of Alabama’s Briarwood Christian School placed third with 18-5. They won $1,250 for their school and trophies and rod/reel combos for themselves.

The Big Bass Award went to Colby Miller and Jaden Cedars of Oak Hill (La.) High School who boated a 9-3 lunker. Capdeboscq and Lagarde caught an 8-4 bass to anchor the Northlake Christian bag.

Toledo Bend Lake Country hosted the event.

FLORIDA’S FREDERICK WINS FLW TOUR AT LAKE OKEECHOBEE PRESENTED BY EVINRUDE

FLORIDA’S FREDERICK WINS FLW TOUR AT LAKE OKEECHOBEE PRESENTED BY EVINRUDE

Leesburg Pro Catches 19-pound, 14-ounce Final Day Limit, Wins $100,000

CLEWISTON, Fla. (Jan. 28, 2018) – When Leesburg, Florida, angler Tim Frederick turned pro and began competing on the Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) Tour, the first event of his career was at Lake Okeechobee in February of 2016. Frederick managed to catch just one bass in two days of competition at that tournament and finished in 169th – last place. On Sunday, Frederick redeemed himself by catching a five-bass limit weighing 19 pounds, 14 ounces, to earn the win the FLW Tour at Lake Okeechobee presented by Evinrude.

Frederick’s four-day total of 20 bass weighing 85-4 gave him the win by a narrow 1-pound, 2-ounce margin over second-place pro Bryan Schmitt of Deale, Maryland, and earned him $100,000 in a dramatic finale to the four-day event that featured 188 of the best bass anglers in the world kicking off the 2018 FLW Tour season.

“I’m still a little shocked,” said Frederick, whose previous best finish in FLW Tour competition was a 14th place finish on the Harris Chain of Lakes in 2017. “I didn’t think that I had as much weight that I did today. Some of the best fisherman on the planet were fishing in this event and to come out on top after four days – this is a dream come true.”

Frederick caught his bass throughout the week by targeting isolated reed clumps in Harney Pond.

“I was so stressed today,” Frederick said. “I had a small limit and I had missed a good one earlier and I did not know whether to leave or to stay. I had to sit down for a minute and regain my composure and I decided to stick it out in that area. I had nothing else to go to, and that place had been special to me. With just 10 minutes left in the day, I caught a big one. It was a $100,000 fish.”

Frederick’s “big one” was an estimated 8-pounder that was most certainly the winning fish. Frederick said that all of his fish this week came on a pair of stickbaits – a Strike King Ocho (black with blue flake or black with blue tail) and a Strike King Shim-E-Stick (black with blue flake or black with blue tail) – and a Strike King Pure Poison Swim Jig (green-pumpkin) with a Rage Bug trailer.

“I think the keys for me this week were my Power-Poles, my Florida knowledge, and patience,” Frederick went on to say. “It would have been near impossible for me to fish some of the areas that I did this week if I wouldn’t have been able to pole down. And when I would first pull up to a spot I would target the key areas. Sometimes it took multiple casts and fishing extremely slow, but every fish that I caught were in those key areas.”

The top 10 pros on Lake Okeechobee finished:

1st:          Tim Frederick, Leesburg, Fla., 20 bass, 85-4, $100,000
2nd:         Bryan Schmitt, Deale, Md., 20 bass, 84-2, $30,000
3rd:         General Tire pro Mark Rose, West Memphis, Ark., 20 bass, 78-5, $25,500
4th:         Jared McMillan, Belle Glade, Fla., 20 bass, 73-13, $20,100
5th:         Brandon McMillan, Clewiston, Fla., 20 bass, 69-12, $19,000
6th:         Christopher Brasher, Longview, Texas, 20 bass, 67-4, $18,000
7th:         Chad Morgenthaler, Reeds Spring, Mo., 20 bass, 67-1, $17,000
8th:         Quaker State pro Scott Canterbury, Odenville, Ala., 20 bass, 65-15, $16,000
9th:         Power-Pole pro Cory Johnston, Cavan, Ontario, Canada, 20 bass, 60-5, $15,500

Compete results for the entire field can be found at FLWFishing.com.

Overall there were 50 bass weighing 157 pounds, 13 ounces caught by pros Sunday. All of the final 10 pros weighed in five-bass limits.

Jeffrey Mathews of Maitland, Florida, won the co-angler division and $20,000 Friday with a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 42 pounds, 1 ounce, followed by Tyler Woolcott of Port Orange, Florida, who finished in second place with 10 bass weighing 37 pounds, 15 ounces, worth $7,600.

The total purse for the FLW Tour at Lake Okeechobee presented by Evinrude was more than $930,000, including $10,000 through 60th place in the Pro division. The tournament was hosted by Roland & Mary Ann Martin’s Marina and Resort and the Hendry County Tourism Development Council. The next event for FLW Tour anglers will be the FLW Tour at the Harris Chain of Lakes, Feb. 22-25 in Leesburg, Florida, hosted by Lake County, Florida.

Television coverage of the FLW Tour at Lake Okeechobee presented by Evinrude will premiere in high-definition (HD) on NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) March 28 from Noon-1 p.m. EST. The Emmy-nominated “FLW” television show airs on NBCSN, the Pursuit Channel and the World Fishing Network and is broadcast to more than 564 million households worldwide.

In FLW Tour competition, pros and co-anglers are randomly paired each day, with pros supplying the boat, controlling boat movement and competing against other pros. Co-anglers fish from the back deck against other co-anglers. The full field of 376 anglers competed in the two-day opening round. Co-angler competition concluded following Friday’s weigh-in, while the top 30 pros based on their two-day accumulated weight advanced to Saturday. Only the top 10 pros continued competition Sunday, with the winner determined by the heaviest accumulated weight from the four days of competition.

Throughout the season, anglers are also vying for valuable points in hopes of qualifying for the 2018 Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of professional bass fishing. The 2018 Forrest Wood Cup will be on Lake Ouachita in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Aug. 10-12 and is hosted by the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism and Visit Hot Springs.

FLORIDA’S FREDERICK GRABS LEAD ON DAY THREE OF FLW TOUR AT LAKE OKEECHOBEE PRESENTED BY EVINRUDE

Leesburg Pro Brings 15-ounce Lead into Final Day

[print_link]

CLEWISTON, Fla. (Jan. 27, 2018) – Pro Tim Frederick of Leesburg, Florida, caught two kicker largemouth Saturday – a 6- and 7-pounder – to anchor his 23-pound, 3-ounce limit and jump to the top of the leaderboard after Day Three of the FLW Tour at Lake Okeechobee presented by Evinrude. Frederick’s five-bass limit was the only bag Saturday that weighed in excess of 20 pounds, telling when you consider that the lake had pumped out 16, 20+ pound limits in the first two days of competition.

Frederick (15 bass, 65-6) will now bring a 15-ounce lead over second-place pro Bryan Schmitt of Deale, Maryland, (15 bass, 64-7) who led the first two days of competition, into Championship Sunday. Also in striking distance, in third place, is General Tire pro Mark Rose of West Memphis, Arkansas, (15 bass, 61-3). Rose has a history of fast starts to the season, winning the first two events of the 2017 FLW Tour season at Lake Guntersville and Lake Travis.

“My very first FLW Tour event three years ago was on this lake, and I weighed in one bass and finished dead last,” said Frederick, who is fishing in his 14th career FLW Tour event. “I’ve got a love-hate relationship with this lake, and right now I am loving it. I didn’t get a lot of bites today, but the ones that I did get were good ones.

“Although my day turned out really well, it didn’t start that way,” Frederick continued. “It was terribly slow. I caught one of my good ones early – my second fish – but then it took me forever to get a limit. When the water temperature hit 64 degrees I had a 45- to 50-minute window where I caught two more good ones, but I didn’t catch more than 9 or 10 fish all day.”

Frederick said that his key bait that landed all of his keepers on Saturday was a Texas-rigged black and blue-colored Strike King Ocho worm. He’s also mixed in a Strike King Pure Poison Swim Jig and an unnamed swimjig to produce at times during the week.

“I’m usually a power-fisherman, and it’s weird because I’m fishing so slowly this week,” Frederick said. “I’m throwing at isolated clumps of pencil reeds and it might take me 5 minutes to reel back in. But, if it doesn’t feel right, I’ll just reel in immediately and make another pitch. I’m fishing by feel, basically. I can actually feel the beds with my bait, and when I do I’ll keep making multiple casts to the same area.

“The bite was tougher today, and I think it was due to how cloudy it was. Tomorrow, they’re saying that it’s going to be worse – rainy and windy.  But, my water is still clean and I’ve got no choice but to be patient and stick it out there. Win, lose or draw, there is enough fish in my area to win it. I just have to get them to bite.”

The top 10 pros advancing to the final day of competition on Lake Okeechobee are:

1st:          Tim Frederick, Leesburg, Fla., 15 bass, 65-6
2nd:         Bryan Schmitt, Deale, Md., 15 bass, 64-7
3rd:         General Tire pro Mark Rose, West Memphis, Ark., 15 bass, 61-3
4th:         Power-Pole pro Cory Johnston, Cavan, Ontario, Canada, 15 bass, 53-11

Fishing Hooks 101: Matching The Proper Hook To Your Rig – MTB

Fishing Hooks 101: Matching The Proper Hook To Your Rig

 [print_link]

Choosing the right fishing hooks has become a multiple-choice quiz anymore thanks to today’s wide array of lures and bass fishing techniques. Gone are the days when you tied on the first hook you found in your tackle box. Now you need a different style of hook for each type of lure and fishing application.

Fishing Hook Sharpness

When buying a hook, the main features to consider are sharpness and how well the hook retains sharpness.  You can quickly tell how sharp a hook is by laying it on your fingernail and pulling it. If it slides on your fingernail, it’s not sharp.

Sharpness can be attributed to the type of point on the hook.  Some fishing hooks have cutting or spade-shape points, which have both good and bad qualities. A cutting point grabs quickly and as it penetrates the cutting edges slice though the toughest part of a bass’ mouth for a solid hook set. The potential drawback to this type of hook though is after it penetrates the hook leaves a bigger hole in the bass’ flesh which could cause the hook to fall out when the fish tries to shake loose. Conical tip hooks leave smaller tears in the fish and hold better than cutting point hooks.

Fishing Hooks Thickness

fishing hooks

The thickness of the wire or metal is another key consideration when selecting hooks. For most bass fishing applications, you will be dealing with light or standard wire compositions. Standard wire works best for heavy-duty situations such as pitching and flipping into thick cover.  But it also requires a stronger hook set than lighter wire hooks.  Light wire fishing hooks are best for finesse fishing with thin line.

Hooks also come in a variety of finishes. Most hooks feature the standard bronze finish, but other popular finishes include blue and black nickel, black chrome, gold and red.  Teflon and other slick coatings are applied to hooks for easier hook penetration.

Fishing Hook Size

mustad hooks

A hook’s pattern determines its size, which causes hook dimensions to vary to some extent. The size of the hook is given in terms of the width of the hook’s gap, the distance between the point and the shaft measured in aughts. Hook sizes for most bass fishing applications range in size from 1/0 to 6/0.   Another important dimension of the hook is its throat or bite, the area between the point and hook bend.  Any hook with generous dimensions in its gap and throat creates deeper penetration of the point and better holding power because the weight of the fish rides high up on the center of the hook’s bend.

Since hook companies have different hook size designations, you should inspect hooks carefully before buying them to determine if it has a wide enough gap for your style of fishing.  Usually the bigger the gap, the better when using larger soft plastics such as Flukes, creature baits and swimbaits.  A smaller gap hook has the advantage of offering less resistance when a bass inhales a plastic bait, but most anglers prefer extra-wide gap models.

Improvements in the hook’s shank design have been made throughout the years. The straight-shank or Sproat style has always been a popular worm hook because it allows a Texas-rigged worm to lie straight. Offset shank models offer more bite between the hook eye and point to produce solid hook sets.  These models have long shanks which give the hook more gap and positions the hook point well to the rear of baits enabling you to catch more short-striking bass.  Cam-action hooks such as the Tru-Turn models feature shanks with substantial bends.  The bent shaft allows the hook to rotate in the fish’s mouth to deliver a sure hook set.  Octopus-style hooks featuring a round shank and bend are best for drop-shotting small soft plastics.

Fishing Hooks Pairings

drop-shot-hook

With all these designs and features, selecting the right hook for each type of lure can be puzzling. Try offset hooks with wide gaps for worm fishing. Use 3/0 hooks mainly for 6- to 8-inch worms, except scale down to 2/0 hooks for smaller Senkos or finesse worms.  Upgrade to 5/0 and 6/0 hooks for throwing 10- to 12-inch plastic worms.

Less is better when matching a hook with floating worms or senko style baits so try a 1/0 light wire hook with either an offset or straight shank.   The light-wire hook is necessary to get the most action out of the worm.

Fishing for bass with live bait also requires different hook styles. The Kahle hook is ideal for shiners and crayfish because it offers a wider gap clearance for bass to take the bait easier.   A sproat worm hook with two barbs near the hook eye works best for holding nightcrawlers on the hook better.

Shopping for fishing hooks has gotten harder, but if you make the right choices, getting a good hook set into a bass becomes much easier.

Fog Cancels Final Day Of Bassmaster College Series Event; Wisconsin-Platteville Claims Win

MANY, La. — The week has been full of twists and turns for Hunter DeSplinter and Conner Choate of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville at the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Central Tour presented by Bass Pro Shops on Toledo Bend.

After catching 25 pounds, 9 ounces on Friday, they took the lead as the Top 30 teams prepared for the final day of competition. Little did they know they wouldn’t need another cast on Toledo Bend to take the Central Tour title.

Saturday’s action was canceled after heavy fog hung over Toledo Bend, and Choate and DeSplinter were named champions with a two-day total of 41-6. Conditions weren’t conducive to send teams onto the 185,000-acre reservoir — and as the minutes ticked by, the fog seemed to settle into the Sabine River impoundment more and more.

“If half of the day or more is threatened by a delay, then the day is canceled,” Tournament Director Hank Weldon said. “We scheduled Saturday’s final day to be an eight-hour event, but with fog making visibility non-existent on Toledo Bend we canceled Saturday’s action for good reason.”

When the clock struck 11 a.m. CT, the 30 teams had mixed emotions as some were fine with not going and others were frustrated they didn’t have one more opportunity to compete for the win. Meanwhile, the winning team of Choate and DeSplinter were seemingly numb and stunned by what had happened.

The sophomore tandem was more than intimidated by the vastness of Toledo Bend when it was announced on the schedule, but they started the week with a plan to try to simply make the 2018 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship. Not only did they survive and qualify, but they withstood the field after two days and were alone at the top of the leaderboard.

“This is our second event together as a team,” DeSplinter said. “It is unexplainable at the moment. We watch these events on TV and we dream of it, everyone does. But for everything to come together and to win; we may never experience this again.”

The duo fished on the south end of Toledo Bend and caught every fish, including their 10-pound kicker on Day 2 on a Strike King 5XD crankbait. Their main area was a swift drop in bottom contour off a grass flat. Their double-digit bass also took Big Bass honors for the week.

“Anglers were fishing too shallow and basically were on top of the fish, but they were focused on the grass,” Choate said. “Hunter found a perfect lineup, and we were able to run our crankbaits off the drop and it was incredible.”

This marks the University of Wisconsin-Platteville’s first Bassmaster College Series victory as a school and one that seemed inconceivable a few weeks ago for the team as they bested the 248-team field. Their miracle Day 2 weight carried them past the Day 1 leaders of Tyler Craig and Spencer Lambert of Louisiana-Monroe who weighed back-to-back 20-pound bags and found themselves just 5 ounces off the pace with 41-1.

“To finish in second place is great because our main goal was to make the national championship,” Craig said. “It was the right decision to cancel, but it does sting some because we wanted a shot to win today. It just wasn’t meant to be.”

Craig and Lambert claimed second at the 2017 Central Regional just down the road at Sam Rayburn Reservoir. Pair that with a great track record and a Top 12 at the 2017 national championship and this duo will be one to watch this summer once again.

Third place went to Caiden Sinclair and Hunter Gibson of the University of Alabama who jumped to the podium after catching 22-11 on Friday. They were roughly 3 pounds off the pace and were definitely in contention on Toledo Bend going into Saturday.

The Top 30 teams slated to compete on Saturday didn’t leave unrewarded as they clinched berths into the College Series National Championship, which will be announced at a later date. With the completion of the Central Tour on Toledo Bend, there are now three more Tour events for anglers to fish as well as their state qualifiers. The next Tour event is slated for Pickwick Lake in Florence, Ala., on April 19-21.

The event was hosted by Toledo Bend Lake Country.

Double-Digit Bass Lifts Wisconsin-Platteville To Top Spot In Bassmaster College Series Central Tour

MANY, La. — Toledo Bend showed its true colors on Friday during the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Central Tour presented by Bass Pro Shops. After only offering a single 20-pound bag on the first day of competition, nine teams met that mark or more on Friday.

Conner Choate and Hunter DeSplinter of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville stole the show as they brought 25 pounds, 9 ounces, to the stage on Friday and jumped into the lead with a two-day total of 41-6. Their day was anchored by a monster catch as their kicker tipped the scales at 10 pounds.

It not only was DeSplinter’s personal best, but it was also recognized as an elite catch by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

“We showed up to our first spot just looking to get a limit in the 11- to 12-pound range,” DeSplinter said. “We had that before 8:30 a.m., so we just kept fishing around and working hard.”

After catching 15-13 on Day 1, just a solid limit would have helped their chances greatly. But what happened after their initial limit is now an unforgettable memory for this duo.

“At 10 a.m., I hooked into the 10-pounder,” DeSplinter said. “I had never seen a fish so big. It jumped at the boat;  I for sure thought I was going to lose it, but we didn’t.”

The fireworks were just beginning as they gathered themselves and continued fishing. They hit a few nearby spots and caught keepers that wouldn’t help their overall weight, so they returned to the spot that produced earlier.

“We returned to that spot and immediately caught a fish close to 7 pounds,” DeSplinter said. “We packed up and headed back to the ramp to ensure the giant fish survived.”

The duo is now preparing to fend off 29 other teams during Saturday’s final day of competition. Coming into the event, their mindset was solely focused on qualifying for the National Championship. But now they have a chance to take home the title of the inaugural Central Tour format.

“We had no expectations leaving the dock (Friday),” Choate said. “So, we need to keep that same mindset because everything can change so quickly.”

Behind Wisconsin-Platteville are Thursday’s leaders Tyler Craig and Spencer Lambert of the University of Louisiana at Monroe. The duo slipped to second place, but eclipsed the 20-pound mark for the second consecutive day, the only team to accomplish that in the 248-boat field.

“It’s extremely important to stay consistent on Toledo Bend,” said Craig, whose team has a two-day weight of 41-1. “You can catch up in a hurry with a big bag, but at the same time you can stumble and fall if you rely on a giant bite each day.”

Craig and Lambert have landed five and six keepers, respectively, the last two days, and both days have featured crucial catches just before check-in. But they know they are targeting quality and may not need quantity to win.

“It’s not easy fishing for a handful of bites, but I feel like the bigger fish are trickling into our area,” Craig said. “It seems like our spots are the transition areas and the fish are pulling up and feeding, and then when they leave they are headed to even shallower water to spawn.”

It could be a battle until the last cast as first and second are separated by only 5 ounces heading into the final frame of action.

Caiden Sinclair and Hunter Gibson of the University of Alabama vaulted into third place after bringing the second-biggest bag of the day to the scales. Their 22-11 limit has them just over 3 pounds from the lead and within sight of a possible title with 38-3.

The final team to sneak into the cut was Bethel University’s John Garrett and Brian Pahl. The duo has finished second and fourth in the last two national championships, and Garrett was the 2016 College Classic Bracket champion who represented the College Series during the 2017 season.

The 248-team field was cut after Friday’s weigh-in to the Top 30. Those teams clinched a berth in the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops and will be fishing for the win on Saturday.

The final-day takeoff will begin at 7 a.m. CT from Cypress Bend Park, and the weigh-in will be held back at the park at 3 p.m.

The event is being hosted by Toledo Bend Lake Country.

SCHMITT MAINTAINS LEAD ON DAY TWO OF FLW TOUR AT LAKE OKEECHOBEE PRESENTED BY EVINRUDE

SCHMITT MAINTAINS LEAD ON DAY TWO OF FLW TOUR AT LAKE OKEECHOBEE PRESENTED BY EVINRUDE

CLEWISTON, Fla. (Jan. 26, 2018) – Day One leader Bryan Schmitt of Deale, Maryland, brought a five-bass limit to the scale Friday weighing 23 pounds, 8 ounces, to slightly extend his lead after Day Two of the FLW Tour at Lake Okeechobee presented by Evinrude. He’ll bring a slim 14-ounce lead over General Tire pro Mark Rose of West Memphis, Arkansas, into Day Three of the four-day event that featured a field of 376 of the world’s best bass-fishing professionals casting for top awards of up to $125,000.

Local pro Brandon McMillan of Clewiston leads the local contingent with 36-13, good for eighth place, while Clewiston’s Scott Martin sits in 12th place with 33-13. Brandon’s little brother, Jared McMillan of Belle Glade, also made the top-30 cut and will start Day Three in 15th place with 33-8. The field is now cut to 30 for Saturday’s competition with only the top 10 anglers advancing to championship Sunday.

“I went back to my same spot where I caught them yesterday and kind of expanded on my area today,” said Schmitt, a two-time Forrest Wood Cup qualifier. “There was a little more boat traffic in there today, and it took me a while to get into a new comfort zone. I caught probably 12 fish today – five good ones – but most of my weight came between 12 and 3.”

Schmitt is sharing the area with many of the tournament leaders, including the Johnston brothers from Canada. He said that all of his fish that he weighed in came on a different bait than yesterday.

“I had to change to a different bait today – a Riot Baits Recon (vibrating jig),” Schmitt continued. “At this point there aren’t many secrets and we all know what each other are doing. It’s going to come down to whoever gets lucky over the next two days. The winning fish are there. The potential for a 30-pound limit is sitting right there.

“There are definitely some fish spawning. And there are still some coming in. I think it’s the perfect storm.”
