The Science and Art of Fishing® Goes Viral

Z-Man Fishing Enlists Communications Pros Traditions Media

[print_link]

Ladson, SC (January 15, 2018) – There’s something elusive and simultaneously irresistible about a truly original thing. It draws you toward the unknown, and toward the possibility that mind-blowing things are about to happen.

Within the mega-competitive realm of fishing tackle, Z-Man Fishing has always approached things from a different point of view: A softbait with nearly extra-terrestrial properties; a vibrating, flashing, wobbling lure that isn’t exactly a jig or a spinnerbait; an ultra-subtle presentation that’s rewritten the rules of finesse bass fishing altogether.

Etching a parallel path within the sphere of angling communications, Traditions Media has gained a reputation for articulating cutting-edge fishing concepts through stirring words and imagery. Recently, the unconventional organizations joined forces, bringing two unique voices into harmony. The aim: To convey with wisdom and passion the wealth of fish-catching stories inherent in Z-Man’s inimitable league of lures.

“What really sets Z-Man apart from the sea of other fishing companies are the unique properties of our lures and materials themselves,” says Daniel Nussbaum, President of Z-Man Fishing. “From the proprietary 10X Tough ElaZtech® material used to make our softbaits to the patented design of our ChatterBait® bladed jigs, all our lures offer something distinctly different from the competition— and that translates to superior performance on the water.”

Given the meteoric ascension of the Ned Rig, for one, it’s easy to understand the buzz surrounding the Z-Man brand. “We are one-hundred percent convinced that our ElaZtech softbait formula is the material of the future,” Nussbaum asserts. “The shift toward ElaZtech is analogous to the rise of superbraid fishing lines. As anglers learned to adjust to different knots and to match line with select rods, spectacular new fishing tactics emerged.”

Traditions Media president Noel Vick fortifies Nussbaum’s notions. “Z-Man has exhibited impressive growth in recent years. The time has come to share their story — the trailblazing Z-Man way — with the greater angling public. How many anglers know, for instance, the superior fish-catching advantages of a naturally buoyant softbait? Or that ElaZtech is 100-percent non-toxic?”

“I’ve closely watched for the last five years how Traditions Media conveys the stories behind fishing products and brands to the angling community, most importantly the media and the trade,” adds Nussbaum.

“Taking a step back and looking objectively at our product line, there are simply so many stories behind our recent lure and terminal tackle introductions that haven’t been told. Our talent pool runs deep, too, from touring bass pros and inshore saltwater guides who use our products daily to marine biologists and materials scientists bringing a different expert perspective to the table. Telling these stories will immediately allow anglers to realize the benefits of our products; there is no one better equipped to do this than Traditions Media.”

“We can’t wait to start divulging all the new Z-Man intel, really blow anglers’ minds with possibilities,” says Vick. “That’s the strength of our team. Partnering with imaginative companies like Z-Man makes what we do fun; it’s why we’re all here — to plant the seeds of possibility in the minds of outdoors folks for the betterment of the whole industry.”

Perch Pozole Recipe: Mexican Perch Soup with Cilantro – MTB Recipe

Perch Pozole Recipe: Mexican Perch Soup with Cilantro

[print_link]

Welcome back to the MTB Kitchen! This week we’re getting #fancy with a spicy soup called pozole to warm us up in cold weather. Perch pozole is a Mexican soup or stew made from hominy and other ingredients. It’s a little known american food, but if you like stews, jambalaya, or gumbo, you’ll probably enjoy this perch pozole. Here’s how to make it:

Perch Pozole Ingredients

1 lb raw perch fillets
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 shallots, chopped
4 garlic cloves, finely chopped
2 serrano chiles, sliced thinly
8 tomatillos (about 1.5 pounds), husks removed
1 1/4 cups chopped cilantro leaves
15 Oz white hominy
8 oz clam juice
3 trimmed, sliced, thin radishes
salt & pepper

Perch Pozole Instructions

To start your perch pozole, heat up your oil in a large pot over medium heat. Toss in the shallots, garlic, and half of the chiles until they’ve softened up, about 5 to 7 minutes.

While those are softening up, blast the tomatillos in the blender until smooth.

Meanwhile, purée tomatillos in a blender until they’re silky smooth.

Dump half of the tomatillo purée to the pot and stir continuously until it’s thickened up, about 5 more minutes. Add 1 cup of cilantro to the rest of the purée and set it aside for later.

Add perch, hominy, clam juice, and 1 cup water to the pot. Simmer and gently cook over medium-low heat until perch is opaque and cooked through, about 8–10 minutes.

Remove from heat. Stir in the second half of your raw tomatillo-cilantro purée, break perch into large chunks; season with salt and pepper.

Divide stew among bowls and top with radishes, and enjoy!

Your perch pozole should end up looking like this:

How To Catch Bass In Cold, Murky Water – MTB

How To Catch Bass In Cold, Murky Water

[print_link]

Catching bass in cold, murky water is tough, but it can still be done.

The depths of bass in cold, murky water depends on the weather. If it has been warm and sunny for three or four days, the fish are going to be real shallow. With the water off-color, the fish will move into water shallower than 1 foot. Bass will still be close to deep water though, so when the weather changes they don’t have to travel far to reach that deeper water. If the weather has been cloudy and cold for the last couple of weeks, then I would try to catch bass out a little deeper.

winter bass

When bass move into the shallows during cold, murky water conditions, look for them along rock banks, creek channel bends and other spots close to deep water. Concentrate on the rocks because the water there tends to warm faster on sunny days. If the bass are staying in deeper water, concentrate on the creek channels and points.

Checking the water temperature in off-color water is pretty important from late fall through early spring. Hunting for the warmest water available doesn’t guarantee you will catch fish though. You can still get blanked even when you find the warmest water available because the fish haven’t found it yet. Water can warm up pretty quick in the backs of coves, but a lot of times the fish haven’t moved that far yet to find the warmer water.

jig trailer

Even if the water temperature is in the 40s, the sunshine will cause bass to move up close to the bank where you can catch these fish flipping. A 3/8-ounce jig with a loud rattle attached is ideal for flipping to bass in murky water. Attach either a plastic chunk or plastic craw to your jig as a trailer. Black/yellow or black/blue are good color combinations for your jig and trailer in murky water.

A slow presentation is important when fishing cold, murky water. Keep your jig close to the bottom and barely move it. Present the lure to any visible cover, such as bushes or laydowns, along rocky banks or channel bends. If you caught a fish off of this type of cover before or you just feel a fish is there, you might have to throw four or five times to the spot to get bass to bite because the fish are usually inactive.

LIVETARGET impresses with twin awards at Big Rock shows

[print_link]

Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON (January 12, 2017) – LIVETARGET lures are widely recognized for their anatomically accurate, three-dimensional designs and incredibly detailed, lifelike finishes. When these visual characteristics are coupled to actions proven to attract and trigger the wariest predators, the result is a family of lures that represents Nature to the highest degree possible: lures that are truly, Live Targets.

Born of biomimicry, LIVETARGET lures have mustered a burgeoning collection of ICAST New Product Showcase “Best in Show” distinctions, collecting trophies in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2017, a feat unparalleled in the 21st century by any other lure manufacturer. LIVETARGET continued their dominance of media and vendor accolades at the recent Big Rock distributor shows, with Best in Show performances in both freshwater and saltwater lure categories.

Reprising its ICAST 2017 Best in Show performance in the Saltwater Soft Lure category, the LIVETARGET Hollow Body Mullet claimed Best Saltwater Lure honors at the Big Rock East Show. The Hollow Body Mullet takes the award-winning design elements of LIVETARGET’s hollow body freshwater lures, and delivers that innovation and insight to the saltwater market. This incredibly lifelike, intricately-detailed topwater lure features a strike-provoking action, a robust, corrosion-resistant custom single hook and balanced weighting for superior distance on the cast.

Vic Cook, LIVETARGET’s saltwater lure designer, notes that, “our Product Development team worked tirelessly to bring LIVETARGET’s history and expertise with hollow body lures to this mullet design. We innovated with anatomy, color details, and especially action and hook design. Saltwater fish require a robust and strong hook configuration, and that hook is a central element in the Hollow Body Mullet’s award-winning design.”

Fresh off its First Runner-Up performance in the ICAST 2017 Freshwater Soft Lure category, the LIVETARGET BaitBall Spinner Rig hoisted the Best Freshwater Lure trophy at the Big Rock West show. No simple umbrella rig, the BaitBall Spinner Rig boasts a radical design bristling with unique elements. The multi-wire lure incorporates “teaser” fish on three arms, a single willow-leaf spinner blade for flash in the center, and a specially-designed “target” fish armed with a single sturdy black nickel hook riding, vulnerably, below the spinner. Anglers can quickly replace or customize any of the soft plastic target and teaser fish via the BaitBall Spinner Rig’s unique Interchange System.

The BaitBall Spinner Rig mimics a small cluster of fleeing baitfish. The combined action of the teaser bodies, the flash of the spinner blade, and the tuned vibration of the target fish yields a unique combination of strike-triggering sensory inputs. Grant Koppers, founder and President of LIVETARGET, commented that the BaitBall Spinner Rig is, “one of the most innovative and unique products we have ever designed. In fact, we’ve been working on this concept for several years. Every variable to make this lure function and trigger strikes has been meticulously considered. The flash and vibration is unlike any lure ever created.”

You’ll find these award-winning LIVETARGET lures at your favorite retailers now. The Hollow Body Mullet (MSRP $13.49-$14.49) is available in three sizes and three ultra-realistic color patterns that exquisitely match-the-hatch of any live mullet swimming in briny waters. The BaitBall Spinner Rig (MSRP $13.49-$15.49) is available in three frame sizes, each with two weight options, making it simple to pick the right BaitBall Spinner Rig for shallow- or deep-water applications. A spectrum of eight different color patterns for the teaser and target soft bodies allows anglers to customize their BaitBall Spinner Rig’s visual profile to match the dominant forage in their own home waters.

Two Big Rock shows; two winning LIVETARGET lures; one result: dominance. Cast one for yourself, and learn why LIVETARGET lures dominate freshwater, saltwater, and the competition.

Slow Roll A Spinnerbait To Wake Up Winter Bass – MTB

Slow Roll A Spinnerbait To Wake Up Winter Bass

 [print_link]

If you could only choose a couple of lures to fish all year, a spinnerbait would have to be at the top of your list. A spinnerbait must be considered a lure for all seasons because it can be retrieved at various speeds, including a slow roll.

noisy baits spinnerbaits

The standard retrieve for a spinnerbait involves steadily cranking your reel so the lure moves along a couple of feet below the surface at a medium speed. However, when bass are lethargic and don’t want to chase your lure, you need to “slow roll” the spinnerbait so the lure moves slowly and its blades are barely turning or “slow rolling.”

When poor conditions, such as hot or cold water, drive bass to the bottom, you should resort to slow-rolling a spinnerbait. The slow, steady retrieve catches bass because the fish are attracted to the vibration of the blades and rarely see a spinnerbait on the bottom.

Late winter and early spring are ideal times for slow-rolling blade baits. When water temperatures climb into the 50-degree range in the spring, try slow-rolling a 3/8- or 1/2-ounce spinnerbait with a single Colorado blade for bass feeding on shad during this time. If the water is clear, select a blade bait with a white skirt and a white blade but switch to a white-and-chartreuse model with a gold blade for dirtier water. Your line size for slow-rolling depends on the type of water you are fishing. If you are working the lure through timber, try 20-pound test; for open water areas, use 14-pound test in clearer water and 17-pound test for muddy water.

spinnerbait

Look for rocky banks near deep water to slow roll a spinnerbait along the bottom in early spring. Slow rolling the lure over tops of brush piles in coves is another effective tactic for prespawn bass. Another ideal situation for slow rolling a spinnerbait in early spring is along windy points on sunny afternoons. When using the slow roll retrieve for springtime bass, work the spinnerbait in the 1- to 6-foot range most of the time.

Slow-rolling a spinnerbait also produces strikes from bass at night during the summertime. When it’s too windy to effectively present a plastic worm to bass in deep water, I switch to a 1/2- or 3/4-ounce black spinnerbait with a single black Colorado blade. I slow roll the lure over brush piles and along bluffs to catch bass 15 to 20 feet deep.

Berkley is renewing its premier sponsorship, and Abu Garcia has joined the lineup of top-tier B.A.S.S. sponsors, said Bruce Akin, B.A.S.S. CEO.

Berkley, an 80-year-old company that manufacturers fishing line, lures, rods, accessories and other tackle items, has been a premier sponsor of B.A.S.S. events since 2002. Founded in 1921 in Sweden and known by bass anglers for its Revo reels, Abu Garcia is stepping up to the premier sponsorship level for the first time this year.

In addition, Berkley will again sponsor the Berkley Big Bass Award for the heaviest bass weighed in during the Bassmaster Classic. The agreement also entitles Berkley and Abu Garcia to exhibit space at Classic and Elite Series expos and similar venues at each of the tournaments.

The Berkley Bassmaster Elite at Kentucky Lake presented by Abu Garcia will be held May 4-7 and is the fourth of nine regular-season events in the Bassmaster Elite Series, the exclusive, top-tier bass tournament circuit including 111 of the best-known professional anglers in the world. The 2018 series kicks off Feb. 8-11 on Lake Martin, Alabama.

Elite competition will break for the 48th GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods on Lake Hartwell, South Carolina, March 16-18. Long known as the “Super Bowl of Bass Fishing,” the Classic is a three-day, no-entry-fee championship in which 50 bass anglers will compete for a share of the $1 million purse.

The Classic and Elite Series are covered in television programming on ESPN 2, while on-the-water fishing action from those events are streamed live on Bassmaster.com and ESPN3.
