Brain Choate of Burns, TN won the American Bass Anglers Ram Truck Open Series Tennessee Central tournament, held June 11, 2017 Kentucky Lake. Running out of Paris Landing State Park, Choate caught five bass weighing 22.99 pounds with a 6.13 – pound kicker. He took home $5000 for his efforts.

“I threw a big worm all day fishing ledges. I had my boat sitting in about 18 feet of water and was catching fish anywhere from 10-12 feet of water. I was able to cull a few times today to get to the weight I brought in,” stated Choate.

In second for the boaters, Jeremy Carey of Drummonds, TN. He landed a five-bass tournament limit going 21.75 pounds with a 5.57 – pound kicker. He collected $700 for the effort.

“We fished ledges today, I threw a jig and a drop shot all day. I was able to find about five or six schools of fish, and finally got on a good school and caught fish all day there all day long,” said Carey.

Mike Wasden of Paris, TN took third for the boaters with five bass going 21.24 pounds taking home $500.

“I ran all over the lake today from one end to the other throwing a football jig. I was targeting ledges and caught probably 50-60 fish all day,” stated Wasden.

Mark Pack of Hendersonville, TN took fourth place with a weight of 20.46 pounds.

Josh Tramel of Smithville, TN took fifth with a five bass limit going 20.37 pounds with a 6.18 pound kicker. Josh’s 6.18 pound kicker was enough to take home the big bass of the tournament earning him $400.

In the Co-Angler Division, Joel Trevino of Mt. Juliet, TN won with three bass going 15.47 pounds. He sealed his victory with a 5.99-pound kicker to pocket a check for $1000. The 5.99 pound kicker was good enough for big bass on the co-angler side earning him another check of $160.

“We targeted ledges all day long just throwing a green pumpkin jig and also a carolina rig all day. I didn’t get to cull that much like my boater did, but it was a good day,” stated Trevino.

Taking second for the co-anglers, David Ramey of Kingsport, TN. He brought in a three-bass division limit weighing 14.77 pounds including a 4.72-pound kicker. He collected $400 for the effort.

“I am definitely tired, I came from another tournament in East Tennessee to fish this one. I caught most of fish using a tube fishing ledges. I threw back a bunch of three pound fish. I was never able to get the big bite, but it was a good day,” said Ramey.

Brandon Ratledge of Rossville, GA took placed third among the co-anglers with three bass going 12.42 pounds to earn $300.

“We fished ledges all day. I threw a lot of different baits from crankbaits, worms, jigs, and Carolina rigs. It was a slow day, I caught two four pounders back to back but other than that it was slow,” stated Ratledge.

In fourth place among the co-anglers Jeremy Jones of Gallatin, TN. He brought in three bass for 11.68 pounds with a 5.37 pound kicker.

John Wilkerson of Nashville, TN finished in fifth place with three bass at 11.64 pounds.

Slated for September 9-10, 2017 the Divisional Championship will be held on Chickamauga launching out of Dayton Boat Dock. At the end of the season, the best anglers from across the nation advance the 2018 Ray Scott Championship.

Tackle Talk: V&M Flat Wild

Walker Smith

June 13,2017

This streamlined pitching and flipping bait has some attractive qualities, especially for shallow-water anglers.

I test pitching and flipping baits a lot, which has led to me becoming quite picky about my selection. It takes a lot for me to suggest this type of bait to our readers because, quite honestly, many of them are nearly identical. Something needs to make a heavy impression on me in order for me to suggest it.

The V&M Flat Wild has done just that—it has boosted my heavy-cover confidence since I started tinkering with it. It’s a legitimate fish-catcher for several reasons.

Here’s what you should know about it.

South Carolina Seizes Lead In B.A.S.S. Nation Regional On Upper Chesapeake

South Carolina’s B.A.S.S. Nation caught 162 pounds, 3 ounces to take the lead on the first day of the 2017 Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Eastern Regional presented by Magellan on the Upper Chesapeake Bay out of North East, Md.

South Carolina Seizes Lead In B.A.S.S. Nation Regional On Upper Chesapeake

[print_link]

NORTH EAST, Md. — South Carolina nabbed the first-round lead in the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Eastern Regional presented by Magellan on the Upper Chesapeake Bay today with a combined bass catch of 162 pounds, 3 ounces.

Second place Delaware and third place Florida are close behind with 157-2 and 155-12 respectively. The weights represent the combined totals from 20-member teams representing the B.A.S.S. Nation organizations. A total of 17 teams from Eastern states, plus the province of Ontario are competing in the three-day event.

The Upper Chesapeake Bay is known for its excellent population of largemouth bass, which dominated the overall catch. Smallmouth also live in the Susquehanna River that flows into the Bay, but they don’t average as heavy as the largemouth.

Twenty-pound limits of five largemouth are commonplace on the Upper Chesapeake, said Greg Dipalma, a member of the New Jersey team who has extensive experience on these waters.

“A 20-pound limit of bass is sometimes only good enough for 20th place on the Bay,” Dipalma said. “Tournaments here are usually won on the grass flats.”

However, because the bass here have recently spawned, Dipalma predicted the weights will be down. That proved to be true as only one boater brought in a five-bass limit of more than 21 pounds today.

That was Georgia team angler Tim Carini, who leads the boater division with 22 pounds, 1 ounce. He caught bass throughout the day, with the exception of a two-hour period at midday when the sun came out. Carini had his key location to himself in the morning, but other competitors were inching closer to him later in the day.

“I culled 19 pounds of bass today,” Carini said. “I think I’m fishing a little bit different than what the other guys are doing.”

Carini came in 45 minutes early because he didn’t want to attract any more anglers to his fishing area. His biggest concern is that competitors will beat him to his fish tomorrow.

He was one of the early boats out this morning, which means he will be one of the last boats in line for takeoff Thursday.

Florida team angler Kyle Fox is in second place in the boater division with 20-13. West Virginia team member Kevin Goff is third with 19-12.

Co-anglers are paired with boaters during the tournament, and they are allowed to bring three bass each to the scales. West Virginia team angler Bert Collins made the most of his opportunity and tops the co-angler division with a three-bass limit that weighed 12-14.

Michael Sentore of the New Jersey team weighed in the biggest bass caught by a boater today, 5-15. West Virginia team co-angler Kevin Comes caught the biggest bass of the day, a whopping 6-6 largemouth.

Each team consists of 10 boaters and 10 co-anglers. B.A.S.S. Nation members across the U.S. and Canada compete within their clubs to earn a chance to qualify for a state team.

Besides serious bragging rights, the winning team this week will receive a Skeeter TZX190 bass boat and trailer outfitted with a Yamaha SHO 150 outboard, a Minn Kota 70 Edge trolling motor and a Lowrance Hook 5 sonar/GPS unit.

In addition, the top boater and co-angler from each state team will advance to the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Championship presented by Magellan.

The National Championship, which will be held at Lake Hartwell, South Carolina, on October 19-21, determines three berths in the 2018 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, also at Lake Hartwell, March 16-18.

Weigh-ins will continue Thursday and Friday at 2 p.m. ET at Anchor Marina in North East, Md.

PUEBLO, Colo. (June 14, 2017) – The Roaring Fork High School duo of Josey Morford and Alec Sloan, both of Carbondale, Colorado, brought a five-bass limit to the scale Sunday weighing 12.04 pounds to win the 2017 TBF High School Fishing Colorado State Championship tournament on Lake Pueblo in Pueblo, Colorado. The top 10 percent of each Challenge, Open, and state championship field will advance to the High School Fishing National Championship. The High School Fishing national champions will each receive a $5,000 college scholarship to the school of their choice.

In addition to the High School Fishing National Championship, all High School Fishing anglers nationwide automatically qualify for the world’s largest high school bass tournament, the 2017 High School Fishing World Finals, held in conjunction with the National Championship. Bassmaster High School And Junior Championships To Get Under Way In Tennessee Next Week

Bassmaster High School And Junior Championships To Get Under Way In Tennessee Next Week

[print_link]

PARIS, Tenn. — When hundreds of high school anglers spread out across sprawling Kentucky Lake for the Costa Bassmaster High School National Championship presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods next week, they are likely to find highly educated bass, warns John Garrett, the 2016 Carhartt College Classic Bracket champion.

Garrett, a sophomore standout on one of Bethel University’s bass fishing teams, lives near the Tennessee River impoundment and fishes it every chance he gets.

“Right now fish are hard postspawn,” he said in an interview last week. “They are just now moving out to the ledges and grouping up where you can catch multiple fish if you hit a good spot. Right now is when you want to be on the lake.”

Unfortunately, competition in the high school championship is still a week away, June 22-24. That’s when more than 200 teams of high school anglers from across the country launch from Paris Landing State Park in hopes of claiming the national team title.

Garrett, who represented the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series at the 2017 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods in March, said Kentucky Lake’s bigger bass annually move to deeper water to recover from the spawn around the first of June. They become easy to locate and catch for the first couple of weeks as they earn advance degrees in crankbait avoidance.

“Nobody is going to win the high school tournament on a crankbait,” he said. “There will be a lot of fishing pressure on the lake the next couple of weeks, and the fish will sit out there and get smarter and smarter and harder to catch.”

The young anglers will enjoy good fishing on soft plastics, including drop shot rigs and shaky heads, Garrett added. After all, “Kentucky Lake in my opinion, is the best lake in the Southeast. I have had more trips on this lake when I just said, ‘Wow! I can’t believe the day I just had.’”

Garrett won the right to compete in the Classic when the college bracket fish-off was held on Kentucky Lake last August. This year, high school competitors will have the lake mostly to themselves. The teammates earned the right to compete by finishing high in four regional High School Opens as well as other qualifying events.

This marks the fourth consecutive year for the high school championship to be held on Kentucky Lake. And again, the Junior Bassmaster Championship will be held on Carroll County 1,000 Acre Recreational Lake in nearby Huntingdon, Tenn. That contest involves teams of youngsters aged 7 to 13 representing state organizations within the B.A.S.S. Nation. The youngsters qualified for the championship through tournaments within their respective states.

The junior championship will be June 20-21.

The full field of high school anglers will fish Kentucky Lake Thursday and Friday, June 22 and 23. The field will be cut to the Top 10 teams for Saturday’s finals. Daily takeoffs and the weigh-ins for the first two days will take place at Paris Landing State Park. The final weigh-in will be held in downtown Paris.

With more than 6,900 student athletes representing 650 schools in 45 states, the Bassmaster High School and Junior programs are some of the fastest-growing initiatives within B.A.S.S.

Texas Rig 101: All You Need To Know About The T-Rig – MTB

Texas Rig 101: All You Need To Know About The T-Rig

The Texas rig has been one of the most effective and easiest ways to present a soft plastic bait for decades.

Bass anglers can simply slide worm weights on their lines, tie on a hook, thread on a soft plastic and they are ready to catch fish.

Year after year the Texas rig continues to be the best match for a variety of soft plastic baits including plastic worms, creature and beaver baits, tubes, craws and Senkos. When a soft plastic lure is rigged straight on a hook the Texas rig creates a streamlined and weedless bait that can be presented effectively into the thickest cover to tempt bass into biting.

The Texas rig consists of four basic elements: a soft plastic lure, bullet-shaped sinker, pegging device and a hook.   The hook is the key component of the rig.  My hook choices for Texas-rigged lures are 3/0 straight shank for plastic lizards, Senkos and 6-inch plastic worms; 4/0 straight shank for 7- to 8-inch plastic worms; 5/0 straight shank for 10-inch or longer plastic worms; 4/0 extra wide gap (EWG) for beaver baits and craws; and 5/0 EWG for creature baits and flipping tubes.

COSTA FLW SERIES NORTHERN DIVISION SET TO OPEN 2017 SEASON ON LAKE CHAMPLAIN

COSTA FLW SERIES NORTHERN DIVISION SET TO OPEN 2017 SEASON ON LAKE CHAMPLAIN

[print_link]

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (June 13, 2017) – As many as 400 pros and co-anglers are set to compete in the Costa FLW Series Northern Division event at Lake Champlain, June 22-24. The tournament, which is presented by Power-Pole, is the first of three regular-season events scheduled in the FLW Series Northern Division. Pros will be competing for a top award of up to $46,000 in cash and a new Ranger Z518C boat with a 200-horsepower Evinrude outboard.

“I was able to get out on Lake Champlain for a few days last week and the lake is fishing pretty good,” said Power-Pole pro Cory Johnston of Cavan, Ontario, the reigning two-time FLW Series Northern Division Angler of the Year. “The largemouth seemed to be in a bit of a funk, but they were probably spawning and just weren’t biting very well. In this tournament we are definitely going to see fish in all three phases of the spawn.”

For FLW anglers that compete on Lake Champlain, the major decision is always whether to fish on the north end of the lake or make the long run to the Ticonderoga area on the southern end. Johnston said that he expects that decision will be the key factor to success in this event.

“Champlain is so great because you can really get away from everybody – it’s such a big body of water that you don’t have to fish in a crowd,” Johnston said. “Somebody is always going to make the run down to Ti and catch them real good. When I was there it wasn’t on fire by any means, but that can definitely change in a hurry. I think that there will be at least three boats in the top 10 that are fishing down in Ti.

“The key baits are going to be pretty typical Lake Champlain,” Johnston continued. “Guys are going to be flipping a jig and throwing moving baits down in Ti and when they’re up north they’re going to catch them drop-shotting, throwing a tube, reaction baits and jerkbaits. I’ll be throwing a Jackall Rhythm Wave and flipping a jig for the most part.”

Johnston said that he thinks the winner will likely weigh in a three-day total right around 57 pounds.

“There are lots of smallmouth to be had, but I don’t think you can catch three big days of smallmouth,” Johnston went on to say. “You’re going to have to find and mix in some largemouth. I’m planning on fishing for largemouth – if I can find them.”

Anglers will take off from the Plattsburgh City Marina, located at 5 Dock St., in Plattsburgh, at 6:30 a.m. EDT each day. Weigh-ins will be held at the marina each day beginning at 2:30 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public. The event is hosted by the City of Plattsburgh and the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau.

In Costa FLW Series regular-season competition, payouts are based on the number of participants competing in the event. At Lake Champlain pros will fish for as much as $46,000 and a Ranger Z518C boat with a 200-horsepower Evinrude outboard if Ranger Cup qualified. Co-anglers will cast for a Ranger Z175 boat with a 90-horsepower Evinrude outboard, and an additional $5,000 if Ranger Cup qualified.

The Costa FLW Series consists of five U.S. divisions – Central, Northern, Southeastern, Southwestern and Western. Each division consists of three tournaments with competitors vying for valuable points that could earn them the opportunity to fish in the Costa FLW Series Championship. The 2017 Costa FLW Series Championship is being held Nov. 2-4 on Kentucky Lake in Paris, Tennessee.

Bassmaster Team Championship Headed Back To Arkansas In December

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — For the second time in the four-year history of the event, the Toyota Bonus Bucks Bassmaster Team Championship is headed to Arkansas.

B.A.S.S. officials announced today that the tournament will be held Dec. 6-9, on Norfork Lake in Mountain Home, Ark. The winning team will receive a new Nitro Bass Boat, powered by a Mercury outboard, and the individual winner will earn the final berth into the 2018 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods.

“We are very excited and humbled that B.A.S.S. has decided to bring this tournament to the Twin Lakes area,” said Jeff Pipkin, president and CEO of the Mountain Home Area Chamber of Commerce. “We know the organization could have brought the event to any of the numerous fishing lakes around the country, and we are flattered and honored they chose Norfork Lake.

“We look forward to welcoming and hosting these fishermen, our guests and the people of B.A.S.S. in December.”

Teams from 54 affiliated trails around the country will qualify for the Team Championship — an event that features one of the more exciting formats in bass fishing.

Anglers will begin as two-angler teams, with a team champion being crowned after the first two days. For the final two days, the six anglers from the Top 3 teams will fish solo with a Classic berth on the line.

“We are excited to return to Arkansas for the Bassmaster Team Championship,” said B.A.S.S. Nation Director Jon Stewart. “The very first Bassmaster Team Championship was held in Arkansas at DeGray Lake back in 2014, and it was a great event. We are looking forward to Norfork Lake and the Mountain Home community hosting another great tournament.”

The Bassmaster Tournament Trail has made other high-profile trips to the Mountain Home area in the recent past. A springtime Elite Series event in 2016, which was split between Norfork and Bull Shoals Lake, was won by Florida pro Randall Tharp with 61 pounds, 10 ounces.

Stewart said the timing might be perfect for this event.

“The Elite anglers showed what Norfork could produce in April 2016,” he said. “I think the fishing could be even better in December.”

The Team Championship format has already produced three Classic qualifiers.

That inaugural event in 2014 was won by North Carolina angler Brandon Gray. He went on to finish 37th in the 2015 Bassmaster Classic on Lake Hartwell in South Carolina.

In 2015, the Team Championship shifted to Alabama’s Lake Guntersville, where Texas angler Thomas Martens earned a Classic berth. He finished 26th in the 2016 Classic on Oklahoma’s Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees, marking the highest finish to date for a Team Championship qualifier.

The 2016 Team Championship was held on Tennessee’s Kentucky Lake, where Missouri angler Scott Clift claimed the Classic berth. He finished 50th in the 2017 Classic on Lake Conroe, just outside of Houston, Texas.

“This is not only a chance to celebrate all of the great team tournament anglers from around the country, but it’s also a chance for one angler to truly make history,” Stewart said. “At the end of the event, someone is going to punch their ticket to the Bassmaster Classic.

“For most anglers, that’s a dream come true.”

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. (June 12, 2017) – Jack Faulkner II of Jacksboro, Tennessee, won the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Volunteer Division tournament on Cherokee Lake Saturday with a five-bass limit totaling 15 pounds, 5 ounces. For his win, Faulkner took home $3,289.

“I didn’t have anything in the boat until 9 (a.m.),” said Faulkner, who logged his third career-victory in BFL competition. “After that, I caught three on a bone-colored Heddon Zara Spook, all from grassy points.”

Faulkner said all of his key areas were mid-lake, within a mile of the takeoff ramp.

“Around noon, I started fishing a 10-inch, green pumpkin Yamamoto straight-tailed worm and caught three more,” said Faulkner. “They came deeper from the points, but they needed to have some rocks.”

Faulkner said his two largest fish were caught using the worm between noon and 1 p.m.

“I only had six keepers all day, but they were the right size,” said Faulkner.

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

The top 45 boaters and co-anglers in the region based on point standings, along with the five winners in each qualifying event, will be entered in the Oct. 12-14 BFL Regional Championship on the James River in Williamsburg, Virginia. Boaters will compete for a top award of a Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude outboard and $20,000, while co-anglers will fish for a new Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude outboard.

The 2017 BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 128 tournaments throughout the season, five qualifying events in each division. The top 45 boaters and co-anglers from each division, along with the five winners of the qualifying events, will advance to one of six regional tournaments where they are competing to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American. Top performers in the BFL can move up to the Costa FLW Series or even the FLW Tour.
