LAMBERT GOES WIRE-TO-WIRE, WINS COSTA FLW SERIES CENTRAL DIVISION EVENT ON KENTUCKY LAKE PRESENTED BY LOWRANCE

LAMBERT GOES WIRE-TO-WIRE, WINS COSTA FLW SERIES CENTRAL DIVISION EVENT ON KENTUCKY LAKE PRESENTED BY LOWRANCE

Tennessee Pro Bests 210-boat Field to Earn Fifth Career Victory, $97,200

GILBERTSVILLE, Ky. (June 10, 2017) – Pro Jason Lambert of Michie, Tennessee, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 22 pounds, 8 ounces Saturday to lead wire-to-wire and win the Costa FLW Series Central Division event on Kentucky Lake presented by Lowrance. Lambert’s three-day total of 15 bass weighing 71 pounds, 10 ounces, was enough to earn him the win by a 7-ounce margin and the first place prize package worth $97,200, including a new Ranger Z521C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude outboard.

“After the Tour season that I’ve had, this feels pretty damn good,” said Lambert, who earned his fifth career victory in FLW competition – second on Kentucky Lake. “When I won the Tour event here last year I was fishing down south, but this year I caught most of my fish north of Kenlake (marina).”

Lambert, fittingly proclaimed the ‘Ledge Hammer’ on the cover of this month’s FLW Bass Fishing magazine, said that he had 25 to 28 schools of fish located out deep on the ledges coming in to the event. He said that he only could get to 15 of the schools during the tournament, but it turned out to be more than enough.

“The first day I caught all of my fish on just three different schools,” Lambert said. “I didn’t have a ‘mega-school’, but I rotated through the areas that I did have. It was tough to get on stuff today – there was a lot of local traffic. That’s pretty standard for a lake that is fishing as well as Kentucky Lake is, though.”

Lambert said that he caught close to 40 keepers on each of the first two days of competition, but only managed a dozen Saturday. He estimated that of the 15 fish that he weighed in this week, eight came via a 6th Sense Lures C25 crankbait, five came on a HogFarmer Hog Wobbler jig head with a Castaic Baits Jerky J and two came on a Gene Larew TattleTail worm, in green-pumpkin.

“The key was absolutely locating those schools of fish with my electronics,” Lambert went on to say. “Having several different schools marked and ready to go gave me the confidence to fish for the win this week.”

The top 10 pros on Kentucky Lake were:

1st:          Jason Lambert, Michie, Tenn., 15 bass, 71-10, $97,200

2nd:         Cole Floyd, Leesburg, Ohio, 15 bass, 71-3, $21,600

Grayson Smith of Clarksville, Tennessee, won the Co-angler Division and a new Ranger Z175 boat with a 90-horsepower Evinrude outboard motor. Smith earned his win with a three-day total catch of 15 bass weighing 54 pounds, 3 ounces.

The top 10 co-anglers on Kentucky Lake were:

1st:          Grayson Smith, Clarksville, Tenn., 15 bass, 54-3, $28,700

2nd:         Joe Thompson, Clayton, Ga., 15 bass, 52-2, $6,500

Jojo Walsh of Lyles, Tennessee, caught the biggest bass of the tournament in the Co-angler Division Thursday, a largemouth weighing 8 pounds, 6 ounces, and earned the day’s Co-angler Big Bass award of $200.

The Costa FLW Series on Kentucky Lake presented by Lowrance was hosted by the Kentucky Lake Convention and Visitors Bureau. It was the second of three Central Division tournaments in 2017. The next Costa FLW Series tournament will be the Northern Division opener, held June 22-24, on Lake Champlain in Plattsburgh, New York. For a complete schedule, visit FLWFishing.com.

The Costa FLW Series consists of five U.S. divisions – Central, Northern, Southeastern, Southwestern and Western. Each division consists of three tournaments with competitors vying for valuable points that could earn them the opportunity to fish in the Costa FLW Series Championship. The 2017 Costa FLW Series Championship is being held Nov. 2-4 on Kentucky Lake in Paris, Tennessee.

Wallace State Earns Bassmaster College Series Wild Card Title

[print_link]

MONTEVALLO, Ala. — Joshua Butts and Reid Conner of Wallace State-Hanceville rose to the top of the leaderboard once again as they took the title of the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Wild Card presented by Bass Pro Shops at Lay Lake with a three-day total of 40 pounds, 11 ounces.

Although the final day presented numerous changes and obstacles, Butts and Conner started Saturday with a bang and rode the slight uptick in momentum to the Wild Card victory. After leaving Beeswax Landing at 5:30 a.m., the duo ran 25 minutes up the Coosa River, and it didn’t take long to get the day rolling in the right direction. Conner’s first cast resulted in the team’s kicker fish, a hefty spotted bass, which anchored their 10-13 to win the title.

“I think the feeding window was getting earlier every day because of the change in the moon phase,” Butts said. “They didn’t feed on this spot until 8 a.m. on Thursday, then it was 6 a.m. on Friday.”

Today’s feeding frenzy was so short that Butts and Conner only landed three fish off their main spot, two of which were barely keepers. After bouncing around some current breaks up the Coosa River, they landed a limit and slowly culled throughout the day.

“We had used a big crankbait all week to land our good fish, but today we had to use a jig and shaky head heavily,” Conner and Butts said. “There were some big boulders that the fish were hanging behind as the water pushed past it. We would get hung up often, but we knew that’s where the fish were.”

Butts has now taken home two Carhartt Bassmaster College Series victories, the other being on Lake Barkley in 2015. Both events were the Wild Card “last chance” format to get to the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops.

“It means so much to win events like this,” Butts said. “I’m so happy Reid could win this with me because of how great it makes you feel, not just around our region, but nationally too.”

Luke Gillund and Robby Troje of Bemidji State University almost chased down the eventual champions as they brought the biggest bag of the final day to the scales. With 14-1 on Saturday, Gillund and Troje vaulted from 10th to second when the scales closed.

This duo had an immense amount of pressure on their shoulders as the national championship is in their school’s city later this summer. The Bemidji Chain of Lakes will host the 2017 national championship and will have two home teams qualified as Gillund and Troje join the Swanson brothers who qualified via the Midwest Regional.

“To qualify for the national championship and for it to be in our backyard is awesome,” Gillund and Troje said. “We can see the lakes from our school, that’ll be a neat experience.”

Gillund and Troje earned the Bassmaster Big Bass Award of the event, with a 6-13 largemouth they brought to the stage on Saturday. It topped the previous mark by over a pound and a half.

“We tried to make our shallow bite work on Thursday,” Gillund said. “But after we finished in 58th, we knew that bite was dying for us.”

They switched it up and fished trees and stumps on an offshore ledge and improved their standing every day. They mainly used a crankbait and a shaky head to catch their fish. On Friday the crankbait netted Gillund a double, his first ever, and on Saturday the shaky head landed the big bass of the event.

Austin Mize and Parker Davis of the University of North Alabama moved into third place after weighing 12-1 pushing their three-day total to 37-8. The teammates had a two pronged approach that they keyed on during different times of the day.

“We had an early shad spawn bite in the morning, but it was dying every day of the event,” Mize said. “It gave us a good one on Thursday, and it came in handy today as we landed a few more.”

Once their shad spawn bite died an hour into the day, the duo fished offshore and pounded a school of bass each of the three days.

A crankbait paid big dividends on Thursday, but as the week wore on more finesse approaches landed fish for the teammates.

Brody McWilliams and Tristan Gold of Indiana University landed in fourth place with 37-5, and Brady Bowden and Tyler Pennington rounded out the Top 5 with 36-13.

JP Kimbrough and Jared Rasco of the University of Louisiana-Shreveport took home the Bass Pro Shops Nitro Big Bag of the event because of their 17-1 weight on Day 1, which gave them the early lead. Butts and Conner also took home the Livingston Lures Day 2 Leader Award for holding the lead after Friday.

The Top 18 teams are now qualified for the national championship, which is August 7-12 on Bemidji Lake in Minnesota.

The event was hosted by Discover Shelby County and the University of Montevallo Presidential Outdoors Scholarship Program.

Wallace State Seizes Lead At Bassmaster College Wild Card On Lay Lake

Wallace State Seizes Lead At Bassmaster College Wild Card On Lay Lake

[print_link]

SHELBY COUNTY, Ala. — Conditions changed once again at Lay Lake as the full field of teams battled to not only take the top spot, but also to make the cut and fish on the final day.

Joshua Butts and Reid Connor of Wallace State-Hanceville took the lead on Friday during the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Wild Card presented by Bass Pro Shops after bringing 15 pounds, 3 ounces, to the scales. Their two-day total is 29-14.

After the heavy rains earlier in the week, the generation schedule at Lay has created a lot of current on the Coosa River, thus bringing a lot of dirty water and heavy current into the fishery. Butts and Connor found themselves in second place Thursday, but after Alabama Power slowed the generation, they jumped into the top spot heading into the final day.

“We’ve been fishing a current break all week, and one big key has been baitfish,” Butts said. “They are pulled in there all day, but the bass seem to school up in the morning and feed heavy for 30 minutes or so before they disperse out deep.”

Butts and Connor had a limit in less than 45 minutes Friday and elevated their weight from 14-11 to 15-3 with efficiency being one big factor.

“We lost some fish on Thursday during the key time of the morning,” Connor said. “But today we landed everything and capitalized on the best part of the day.”

During three-day events, managing fish is a task sometimes. Deciding when to leave, stay or change your rotation is a tough task, but Connor and Butts have tried to make their best area last for three days. Their hope is another 14- to 15-pound bag of spotted bass will show up on the final day.

“After that big flurry in the morning, we can occasionally catch one that will cull for us,” Butts said. “Our other game plan has been to run south of our area and flip for a good largemouth bite. We got one on Thursday, but didn’t need one today.”

Right behind Wallace State in second place is the team of Hunter Louden and Cully Scroggins from Bethel University. They brought 15-2 to the scales to elevate from 11th into the runner-up position.

They have focused on spotted bass primarily, but have caught an occasional largemouth that has helped the cause. Fishing rock and current have been big players for much of the Top 21 and that isn’t any different for Louden and Scroggins.

“We only got six keeper bites on Thursday, and we got five in the boat,” Louden said. “I’m not sure why, but they were on fire this morning. We caught a quick limit and culled three or four times.”

While the leaders have focused on a reaction bite, Louden and Scroggins have worked slower moving baits through the water column to trigger their fish. After missing the National Championship cut by one spot and a few ounces at Cherokee Lake, they are certainly pleased to be well inside the cut with just one day left in the event.

Now their sights are set on a possible Bassmaster College Series victory.

JP Kimbrough and Jared Rascoe, the Day 1 leaders from Louisiana State University-Shreveport, fell to third place after a brutally slow day. After landing four keepers in the first two hours, the duo didn’t fill their limit until 1:30 p.m. with just one hour left to fish.

Their 9-pound limit has them 3-13 behind the leaders, but certainly in striking distance heading into the final day.

Kimbrough and Rascoe did major damage Thursday because of an early boat draw as their morning bite is crucial to their success. They headed out in the last flight Friday and it showed by their lack of a kicker. Leaving the dock in third place has them confident they can land a few bonus fish before the sun beats down.

Nolan Minor and Casey Lanier of West Virginia University hold down the fourth spot with 25-12, and Austin Mize and Parker Davis of the University of North Alabama round out the Top 5 with 25-7.

The 127-boat field was cut to the Top 21 after Friday’s weigh-in, and they will battle it out Saturday for a Top 18 National Championship berth.

The final day takeoff will happen at Beeswax Landing at 5:30 a.m. CT, and weigh-in will begin on the University of Montevallo’s campus (75 College Dr. Montevallo, Al 35115) at approximately 3 p.m.

The event is hosted by Discover Shelby County and the University of Montevallo Presidential Outdoors Scholarship Program.

Stop number Six on the Elite schedule,The GoPro Bassmaster Elite at Dardanelle presented by Econo Lodge from Russellville, Arkansas is in the books and what a thrilling ending to be sure. Muddy and high water made for some tough fishing conditions. Debris made travel difficult and in some cases, even navigation markers were under water. But the boats still roared up and down the lake in search of the big bag limit. And Steve Kennedy made the most of his last day to come from behind for the victory.
On Friday, Day 1, Kevin VanDam took the early lead with a solid 19 lb 3 oz limit and a 7 ounce lead over Ott Defoe. Kennedy held onto 9th place just 2 lbs 9 ozs back. The first day only saw 80 anglers able to catch a full limit, 2 anglers had one keeper bass for the day, and 2 anglers did not manage to land a keeper bass.
Day 2 ended with Mark Davis coming from 25th place to take the lead over Kevin by almost 2 pounds with an impressive 19 lb 4 oz limit. Kennedy moved up to 4th place and Dean Rojas moved from 7th to 5th place. Jamie Hartman moved up from 5th to hold down 3rd place. Only 54 anglers managed to catch a limit for both day and only one angler did not catch a single legal bass.
What is normally Championship Sunday was actually day 3 for this event. The top 50 anglers made their way out to try to move into the top 12 and fish one more day.Mark Davis held on tightly to the lead, but found himself only 9 ozs ahead of Jamie Hartman who moved up to 2nd place. Kevin slipped to 7th and Kennedy moved up one spot to hold onto 3rd place setting up a tight Championship finish.
With the crowds gone and the lake basically to themselves, the top 12 launched out in search of victory on Championship Monday. For those who were able to tune in to the Bass Live feed, they were treated to some exciting action. Only 6 anglers were able to fill their livewell in the tough conditions. Conditions had changed again and the bite had changed. Jamie Hartman slipped from 2nd with a small 4 fish limit of 7 lbs 5 ounces. VanDam moved up to t
3rd with a nice limit weighing 17 pounds, but 3 lbs 1 oz out of winning. As those who saw on the Live feed, Steve Kennedy made a great upgrade with a solid kicker, but only unofficially led by a few ounces when the live feed ended setting up the exciting weigh-in. Mark Davis tried to hold on to the lead but could only manage a limit of 13 lbs 10 ozs, slipping to 2nd place, missing out on a victory by just 10 ounces.
The real story was what we all missed, people. By scheduling the event for Friday through Monday, BASS virtually ensured that the crowds would be thin. They made sure the anglers would not have to contend with boaters following them around from spot to spot. We expect it when something happens to force cancellation of a fishing day, but who plans a Championship for a Monday unless its a made for television event? Is this just another experiment of something new for next year? I sure hope it isn’t something they plan to continue. Or am I the only one?

LSU Shreveport Takes Early Lead In Bassmaster College Wild Card Tournament

LSU Shreveport Takes Early Lead In Bassmaster College Wild Card Tournament

[print_link]

SHELBY COUNTY, Ala. — Lay Lake is changing day by day as storms passed through the area earlier in the week, making fishing tough. When the dust settled after Thursday’s weigh-in, JP Kimbrough and Jared Rascoe of Louisiana State University-Shreveport took the lead with 17 pounds, 1 ounce, on the first day of the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Wild Card presented by Bass Pro Shops.

Intense rains earlier in the week brought dirty, rising water into the Coosa River, which made Lay Lake stingier than teams expected, but with Thursday’s change it seemed to help Kimbrough and Rascoe’s bite.

“The water had been rising since the heavy rain,” Kimbrough said. “But since they have moved so much water lately, the water is actually a little lower than when we got here.”

Although muddy water hurt much of the field, it didn’t seem to impact the early fishing as many teams came across the stage and echoed sentiments of a productive morning bite. The LSU-Shreveport teammates capitalized on an early start time.

“In the first hour of the day, we caught our best fish and a few others,” Rascoe said. “Then we hit a couple of our other spots, and we upgraded multiple times.”

Pressure on a fishery can impact the bite negatively, but the duo believes they didn’t work their areas enough to impact their chance of success Friday.

“Once we caught a few fish, we got out of our areas,” Kimbrough said. “I don’t know if anyone fished our spots after we left, but we can’t worry about that and can only stick to our game plan and control what we can.”

Kimbrough and Rascoe brought four largemouth and one spotted bass to the scales Thursday.

They carry a 2-6 lead over Wallace State-Hanceville’s Joshua Butts and Reid Connor, who had four spotted bass and one largemouth to complete their 14-11 weight total.

Although the fisheries are more than a two-hour drive apart, Butts compares Coosa River spotted bass to how largemouth act around bridges on Lake Guntersville.

“It was all about timing,” Butts said. “We pulled up on a couple key stretches and were able to catch numerous fish. One of our areas produced 40 bass, but most couldn’t help us cull so we left them biting.”

Although they trail by more than 2 pounds, consistency will be important on a changing fishery like Lay Lake. Largemouth can be here one day and gone the next, but they are the bigger game changers most teams are searching for.

The third-place team of Josh Oliver and Dalton Childers of Auburn University landed 14-6 and are just 5 ounces from second place in the event.

West Virginia University’s Nolan Minor and Casey Lanier sit in fourth with 13-13, which came predominantly from spotted bass. University of Montevallo, the host school of the Wild Card, rounds out the Top 5 as J.T. Russell and John Turner weighed 13-9. Josh Worth of Colorado Mesa University is tied with the home-team duo.

Russell and Turner weighed in the big bass of Day 1, one tipping the scales at 5-2.

The 127-boat field will fish on Friday as takeoff begins at 5:30 a.m. CT at Beeswax Landing. Check-in time is 1:30 p.m. CT.

The event is hosted by Discover Shelby County and the University of Montevallo Presidential Outdoors Scholarship Program.
