Card Takes Command Of Bassmaster Elite At Mississippi’s Ross Barnett

RIDGELAND, Miss. — While 33,000 acres of fishable water seems like it should easily support a 109-angler field, most Elite Series anglers would say they’re sharing water at the Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Elite at Ross Barnett.

Ross Barnett Reservoir is the smallest venue on the schedule this year, but the quality is evident as the Top 6 anglers weighed limits of bass near or exceeding the 20-pound mark.

The question is can weights like Brandon Card’s impressive 22 pounds, 14 ounces be reproduced during Friday’s second round of competition.

“That’s a great question,” Card of Knoxville, Tenn., said following weigh-in. “I spent some time here during pre-practice, and the fishing was on fire. But that bite has changed dramatically since then, and I found an area during our official practice days, which is where I caught them today. I know the number of quality fish are available to have another 20-pound day, but I think it’ll take about a 17-pound average per day to remain in contention for the win.”

Like most of the field, Card is sharing water with other anglers because the best bass fishing seems to be concentrated in certain locations on Ross Barnett.

“The fishing pressure is certainly a factor at this event,” he said. “But to keep my mind in the game, I slow down and focus on making a good cast every time. You can catch fish behind people by doing it that way. I know I’m on the right fish to win this thing, but it’s too early to make any predictions. All I’m able to do at this point is hit the water again tomorrow and do the best I can.”

The old saying goes: “You can’t win a tournament on the first day of a tournament, but you can lose it on the first day.”

Bobby Lane, of Lakeland, Fla., repeated those exact words, and will be starting out Friday morning in second place with 20-14.

“What’s great about this tournament is I’m right at home fishing for bass in shallow water,” Lane said. “I have almost zero experience on Ross Barnett, and not having any preconceived notions has helped me to fish clean and not worry about the other anglers fishing in my area.”

Lane said he was very encouraged by what he learned today, and he’s ready to get out and do it again.

“Who knows what tomorrow is going to bring with stronger winds and fewer clouds,” he said. “But I’m not going to change anything, and I expect the bass to be feeding in a similar locations as they did today. I’m going to be there when they do.”

Mount Ida, Ark., resident and 1995 Bassmaster Classic champion Mark Davis said fishing with extreme patience was key to his impressive five-bass limit that weighed 20-10, good enough for third place after Day 1.

“I like to fish slow and steady,” Davis said. “And with the crowded waters here at Ross Barnett, I felt my style of fishing would be very productive. I’m sharing a piece of the lake with another angler, and we both weighed very similar limits of bass today. We’ve talked and have agreed to work with each other to make it happen again on Friday.”

Rounding out the Top 10: Keith Poche (20-2), Brandon Lester (19-15), Dustin Connell (19-12), Dave Lefebre (18-4), Brent Chapman (18-1), Marty Robinson (18-0) and Brandon Coulter (17-5).

Lester is in the lead for the Phoenix Boats Big Bass award with his 7-2 largemouth bass.

Competition will resume Friday with the full field taking off at 6:15 a.m. CT from Madison Landing. The weigh-in will be held at Old Trace Park at 3:15 p.m.

The event is hosted by the Ridgeland Tourism Commission.

He collected $300 for his catch. “I had a blast today said Ruffin. I caught 7 or 8 fish on a shakey head with a bait my boater gave me,” said Ruffin.

Ernest McIntyre Jr. of Fayetteville, North Carolina placed third among the co anglers with three bass weighing 6.83 pounds. He earned $225 for his catch. “I caught my fish today on a texas rigged 4 inch worm on a small weight,” said McIntyre.

In fourth place among the co-anglers, David Lanaville of Goldsboro, North Carolina weighed in three bass weighing 6.81 pounds.

Tom O’Neal finished in fifth place with three bass at 6.08 pounds.

Slated for May 13th 2017 the next divisional tournament will be held on Lake Gaston out of Americamps in Bracey Virginia. At the end of the season, the best anglers from across the nation advance the 2018 Ray Scott Championship, slated for the Red River in Shreveport-Bossier Louisiana in April 2018.

YETI FLW COLLEGE FISHING SOUTHERN CONFERENCE SET FOR EVENT ON FORT GIBSON LAKE

YETI FLW COLLEGE FISHING SOUTHERN CONFERENCE SET FOR EVENT ON FORT GIBSON LAKE

[print_link]

WAGONER, Okla. (April 25, 2017) – YETI FLW College Fishing is heading to Fort Gibson Lake May 6 for the second of three regular-season stops in the Southern Conference. A full field of college fishing clubs will be competing for the top award of a $2,000 club scholarship and a berth into the 2018 College Fishing National Championship.

“Fort Gibson is a good fishery and I think the college anglers will do well,” said FLW Tour pro Jim Tutt of Longview, Texas, a six-time Forrest Wood Cup qualifier who finished in 4th place when the Costa FLW Series competed on Fort Gibson Lake in 2016. “There are a lot of 3 to 4 pound fish in it, and there are some good spotted bass as well.

“If I was fishing on Fort Gibson this time of year, I’d have four baits tied on to throw,” Tutt continued. “I’d have something to flip with – a brush hog or a beaver, something like that. I’d have a big ½-ounce white and chartreuse-colored spinnerbait with a double Colorado blade, because the water is dingy. I’d have a squarebill crankbait tied on, and you have to have a green-pumpkin (Yamamoto) Senko.”

Tutt predicted that high water levels will likely have the bass up in the flooded willow trees and he expects this tournament to be mainly a shallow-water bite. He predicted a five-bass limit in the upper-teens as the eventual winner.

“A good limit that I would feel very proud of is 15 pounds and up,” Tutt said. “However, I think the winning weight will likely be 18 to 22 pounds.”

Anglers will take off from Taylors Ferry North Recreation Area in Wagoner, at 6:30 a.m. CDT Saturday. Weigh-in will be held at the launch ramp beginning at 2:30 p.m. Takeoff and weigh-in are free and open to the public.

Schools are allowed to register up until the morning of the tournament. Entries may be made either by phone or at FLWFishing.com.

FLW College Fishing teams compete in three regular-season qualifying tournaments in one of five conferences – Central, Northern, Southern, Southeastern and Western. The top ten teams from each division’s three regular-season tournaments and the top 20 teams from the annual FLW College Fishing Open will advance to the 2018 FLW College Fishing National Championship. Additional teams will qualify for the National Championship if the field size in regular-season events exceeds 100 boats.

College Fishing is free to enter. All participants must be registered, full-time students at a college, university or community college and members of a college fishing club that is recognized by their school.

David McMichael & Bradley Whitfield win Fishers of Men Virginia West March 18,2017

What an amazing first tournament for Virginia West, we were hosted by Boydton Baptist Church in Boydton, VA. Brandon Slaughter and his team provided a great meal and venue. Thanks so much for this ministry partnership.

We had Jimmy Tarrant, pastor and author of Solitary Confinement come and speak to us about his break away from addictions and how God healed him, his passion for the ministry is awesome and I look forward to reading his book, we had 7 recommitments indicated on our ministry cards at the end of the night. Please guys if you ever need to talk or pray about things in your life, reach out to me or Tony Mccraw our chaplain, we are always here to listen and help in anyway we can.

Well, the tournament went well, we had alot of fish caught and the weather came together better then expected, not much rain and winds were not even that bad. At the end of the day, the winners were David McMichaels and Bradley Whitfield with a combined weight of 17.27 pounds, and based on others results, this was a great bag to start the season. Their bag had a 4.33 lb kicker.

These two managed to pull off the win on fish they found late in practice, using spinner baits and jigs on point location on the east side of the lake within site of the blast off area. Congrats to these two and we look forward to see how your year ends up.

The lunker of the day was caught by Jd. Shockey and Lynn Washington, it weighed 5.87 pounds and they managed to catch it on a crank bait on a main lake structure.

Jacob Bumgarner and Allen Bumgarner finished just out of the money and will receive two new JB Custom Rods at the next tournament.

Record Field Expected for Bassmaster High School Southern Open On Chickamauga

More than 1,200 participants will launch onto Chickamauga Lake, April 29, for the 2017 Costa Bassmaster High School Southern Open presented by DICKS Sporting Goods. The tournament will showcase the largest field size in B.A.S.S. history.

Record Field Expected for Bassmaster High School Southern Open On Chickamauga

[print_link]

DAYTON, Tenn. — Big things just keep happening at Chickamauga Lake.

Last week, the 36,240-acre Tennessee River impoundment hosted a Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Southern Open, with John Cox winning the pro division and Darrell Davis landing an 11-pound, 5-ounce largemouth that ranks as the biggest bass caught in a B.A.S.S. event this year.

Now the lake is about to play host to the largest field in the 50-year tournament history of B.A.S.S.

The Costa Bassmaster High School Southern Open presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods is scheduled for Saturday, with takeoff at 6:40 a.m. ET from Blue Water Resort. The weigh-in is set for 2:40 p.m. at Dayton City Boat Dock, with a massive field of 416 boats.

With two anglers and a team captain or coach in each boat, more than 1,200 participants will be on the water. The previous record for tournament field size was 332 boats, set last April in a High School Open on Lake Guntersville.

“The overwhelming popularity of high school fishing just keeps shining through in these events,” said Hank Weldon, B.A.S.S. College and High School Series senior manager. “We’re talking about an incredible field — and they’ll be on an incredible fishery, which we saw with last week’s Open.

“It’s going to be a really exciting moment for the sport.”

Spawning bass played a major role in last week’s event at Chickamauga. Cox fished exclusively for bedding fish to catch his three-day total of 68-3, weighing in daily limits of 22-6, 25-7 and 20-6.

Saturday’s event is one of four High School Opens that qualify student anglers for the Costa Bassmaster High School Championship presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods, which will be held on Kentucky Lake in June. The Western High School Open on Lake Oroville, California, also is being held Saturday. In addition to top anglers in the Opens, the highest-finishing competitors in state championships and sanctioned high school team trails also are invited to the High School Championship.

Fish Dayton will be hosting the tournament.

LAKE CHICKAMAUGA SET TO HOST COSTA FLW SERIES SOUTHEASTERN DIVISION FINALE PRESENTED BY LOWRANCE

LAKE CHICKAMAUGA SET TO HOST COSTA FLW SERIES SOUTHEASTERN DIVISION FINALE PRESENTED BY LOWRANCE

[print_link]

DAYTON, Tenn. (April 25, 2017) – As many as 450 pros and co-anglers are set to compete May 4-6 in the Costa FLW Series Southeastern Division finale on Lake Chickamauga. The tournament, presented by Lowrance, is the final regular-season event of 2017 scheduled in the Southeastern Division. Pros will be competing for a top award of up to $50,000 in cash and a new Ranger Z518C boat with a 200-horsepower Evinrude outboard.

“There’s going to be a lot of bass and a lot of big limits caught in this event,” said FLW Tour pro Michael Wooley of Collierville, Tennessee, who won the FLW Tour event at Lake Chickamauga in 2015. “There should be a lot of fish heading offshore right now because the spawn is just about over. I would say it’s going to be a postspawn deal, but there could be a twist. This week we’ve had a lot of rain and we are supposed to get more.”

Wooley said that following a lot of rain, the river runs high and bass seek protection in creeks from the strong current. With that in mind, competitors who originally planned to fish solely offshore may need to make adjustments.

“It’s only a forecast though, so nothing is guaranteed,” said Wooley. “If we do get the rain docks will be a big player, as well as grass up the river. In grassy areas, I’d use a ChatterBait or any kind of soft-plastics. On the docks, I’d flip a jig or maybe even throw a wacky-rigged worm.”

Wooley said that areas near Chester Frost Park will be a good bet for anglers who choose to target offshore bass.

“Chester Frost Park is a really prime area for catching offshore bass,” said Wooley. “I won the Tour event near there and the dam in 2015. If I were competing, I’d throw a big swimbait – they’ll eat it up – or a (Strike King) 6XD or 10XD crankbait.”

The Tennessee pro said a three-day cumulative weight of 70 pounds should be enough to take home top honors.

Anglers will take off from the Dayton Boat Dock, located at 175 Lakeshore St. in Dayton at 6:30 a.m. EDT each day. Weigh-ins will be held at the marina beginning at 2:30 p.m. each day. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public. The event is hosted by the Rhea Economic & Tourism Council.

In Costa FLW Series regular-season competition, payouts are based on the number of participants competing in the event. At Lake Chickamauga, pros will fish for as much as $50,000 and a Ranger Z518C boat with a 200-horsepower Evinrude outboard if Ranger Cup qualified. Co-anglers will cast for a Ranger Z175 boat with a 90-horsepower Evinrude outboard and an additional $1,250 if Ranger Cup qualified.

The Costa FLW Series consists of five U.S. divisions – Central, Northern, Southeastern, Southwestern and Western. Each division consists of three tournaments with competitors vying for valuable points that could earn them the opportunity to fish in the Costa FLW Series Championship. The 2017 Costa FLW Series Championship is being held Nov. 2-4 on Kentucky Lake in Paris, Tennessee.

SHERIDAN’S HENDERSON WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE ARKIE DIVISION EVENT ON THE ARKANSAS RIVER PRESENTED BY MUD HOLE CUSTOM TACKLE

SHERIDAN’S HENDERSON WINS T-H MARINE FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE ARKIE DIVISION EVENT ON THE ARKANSAS RIVER PRESENTED BY MUD HOLE CUSTOM TACKLE

Gravelly’s Rhoades Earns Co-angler Title

[print_link]

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (April 24, 2017) – Kyle Henderson of Sheridan, Arkansas, brought a five-bass limit totaling 16 pounds even to the scale Saturday to win the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Arkie Division event presented by Mud Hole Custom Tackle on the Arkansas River. For his win, Henderson took home $3,792.

“We launched out of Pool No. 6, but I locked to Pool No. 5 because it’s my home waters,” said Henderson, who earned his second career-win in BFL competition. “Unfortunately, there was a barge in the lock, so I wasn’t able to get to my main area until 8:30 a.m.

“The area I targeted was a backwater that had some clearer water in it,” continued Henderson. “The shad were spawning on a stretch of grass. I wasn’t sure if they’d still be spawning by the time I got in there but when I pulled up they were there, along with some bass. I was able to see them – even in the low-light cloudy conditions – with my Costa Sunrise Silver glasses.”

Henderson said he made three initial passes along a 100-yard stretch of grass. He said he used a different bait each time – a white custom spinnerbait, a shad-colored Z-Man ChatterBait and a Sexy Shad-colored Strike King 2.5 KVD HC Square Bill Silent Crankbait.

“I caught a couple of key fish on the ChatterBait, and a big one on the third pass with the square bill,” said Henderson. “I caught everything I weighed in within an hour.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Kyle Henderson, Sheridan, Ark., five bass, 16-0, $3,792

2nd:         Chris Dennis, Little Rock, Ark., five bass, 15-14, $2,256

3rd:          David Summers, Mount Ida, Ark., four bass, 15-1, $1,501

4th:          Larry Gragg, Pine Bluff, Ark., five bass, 14-4, $778

4th:          Fred Martin, North Little Rock, Ark., five bass, 14-4, $878

6th:          Hoyt Akins, Scott, Ark., five bass, 13-11, $659

7th:          Danny Gwinn, Mount Ida, Ark., five bass, 13-9, $599

8th:          Quincy Houchin, Mabelvale, Ark., five bass, 13-6, $539

9th:          Cody Burke, Bryant, Ark., five bass, 12-14, $479

10th:        Paul Browning, Morrilton, Ark., five bass, 12-5, $419

Complete results can be found at FLWFishing.com.

Dennis caught a bass weighing 5 pounds, 11 ounces – the heaviest of the event in the Boater Division – which earned him the day’s Boater Big Bass award of $460.

Dusty Rhoades of Gravelly, Arkansas, weighed in five bass totaling 14 pounds, 13 ounces Saturday to win the Co-angler Division and the top prize of $1,896.

The top 10 co-anglers were:

1st:          Dusty Rhoades, Gravelly, Ark., five bass, 14-13, $1,896

2nd:         Previn Dixon, Fort Smith, Ark., four bass, 11-10, $898

3rd:          Cole Allen, Stamps, Ark., four bass, 11-1, $598

4th:          Stephen Simms, Hot Springs, Ark., five bass, 10-9, $419

5th:          Michael Lucas, Forrest City, Ark., five bass, 9-14, $359

6th:          Mark Stevens, Hot Springs, Ark., five bass, 9-12, $329

7th:          Jason Wedel, Lowell, Ark., five bass, 9-8, $299

8th:          Jody Jones, Harvey, Ark., five bass, 9-4, $269

9th:          Robert Widger, Cabot, Ark., four bass, 9-1, $239

10th:        Nicholas Bergt, Atlanta, Texas, four bass, 8-12, $210

Jonathan Wolfe of Camden, Arkansas, caught the biggest bass among Co-angler Division anglers, a fish weighing 5 pounds, 4 ounces. The catch earned him the day’s Co-angler Big Bass award of $230.

The top 45 boaters and co-anglers in the region based on point standings, along with the five winners in each qualifying event, will be entered in the Oct. 19-21 BFL Regional Championship on the Red River in Bossier City, Louisiana. Boaters will compete for a top award of a Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude outboard and $20,000, while co-anglers will fish for a new Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude outboard.

The 2017 BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 128 tournaments throughout the season, five qualifying events in each division. The top 45 boaters and co-anglers from each division, along with the five winners of the qualifying events, will advance to one of six regional tournaments where they are competing to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American. Top performers in the BFL can move up to the Costa FLW Series or even the FLW Tour.
