ROCK HILL, S.C. (April 3, 2017) – Scott Hamrick of Denver, North Carolina, brought a five-bass limit totaling 16 pounds, 15 ounces, to the scale Saturday to win the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) North Carolina Division event on Lake Wylie. For his win, Hamrick pocketed $4,594.

“I targeted suspended fish under docks from all the way up the river to down near the dam,” said Hamrick, who earned his third career-victory in BFL competition. “I used a Shooter Lures Jig with a Zoom Super Chunk trailer to catch everything I weighed in.

“The fish were coming off of the beds and suspending under docks to feed on crappie,” continued Hamrick. “Most people target those bass when the shad are spawning, but that won’t happen for a week or two. The rest of the field was fishing in pockets and going after bedding fish, but I ended up doing something different.”

Hamrick said he put 25 to 30 keepers in the boat throughout the event.

“The bite was strongest in the morning, but I caught them all day,” said Hamrick. “I didn’t do anything too fancy with the jig. If they were in there under those docks, they would eat it.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st”          Scott Hamrick, Denver, N.C., five bass, 16-15, $4,594

2nd:         Chris Dover, Blacksburg, S.C., five bass, 15-12, $1,940

3rd:          Carson Orellana, Mooresville, N.C., five bass, 15-6, $1,393

4th:          Israel Gibson. Spruce Pine, N.C., five bass, 14-12, $905

5th:          Rob Digh, Denver, N.C., five bass, 14-9, $776

6th:          Cole Blythe, Charlotte, N.C., five bass, 13-15, $711

7th:          Bryan New, Belmont, N.C., five bass, 13-11, $647

8th:          Jeff Queen, Catawba, N.C., five bass, 13-7, $582

9th:          Ryan Deal, Indian Trail, N.C., five bass, 13-2, $517

10th:        Michael Stephens, Gastonia, N.C., five bass, 13-0, $453

Hamrick also caught a bass weighing 5 pounds, 2 ounces – the largest of the event in the boater division – which earned him the day’s Boater Big Bass award of $515.

Louis Kraft of Salisbury, North Carolina, weighed in four bass totaling 12 pounds even Saturday to win the Co-angler division and the top prize of $2,140.

The top 10 co-anglers were:

1st:          Louis Kraft, Salisbury, N.C., four bass, 12-0, $2,140

2nd:         Paul Conti, Concord, N.C., five bass, 11-2, $970

3rd:          Adam Edwards, Cana, Va., five bass, 10-13, $696

4th:          Brent Kukowski, Fort Mill, S.C., five bass, 10-12, $453

5th:          Hunter Harwell, Hickory, N.C., five bass, 10-11, $388

6th:          Michael Thomas, York, S.C., five bass, 10-3, $356

7th:          Jeffery Wingler, Wilkesboro, N.C., four bass, 9-14, $323

8th:          Brian Mann, Ballard, W. Va., five bass, 8-14, $291

9th:          Marvin Godard, Charlotte, N.C., four bass, 8-10, $259

10th:        Caleb Lynch, Mount Holly, N.C., two bass, 8-1, $483

Lynch weighed the biggest bass in the Co-angler Division, a fish weighing 6 pounds, 7 ounces. The catch earned him the day’s Co-angler Big Bass award of $257.

The top 45 boaters and co-anglers in the region based on point standings, along with the five winners in each qualifying event, will be entered in the Oct. 12-14 BFL Regional Championship on the James River in Williamsburg, Virginia. Boaters will compete for a top award of a Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude outboard and $20,000, while co-anglers will fish for a new Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude outboard.

The 2017 BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 128 tournaments throughout the season, five qualifying events in each division. The top 45 boaters and co-anglers from each division, along with the five winners of the qualifying events, will advance to one of six regional tournaments where they are competing to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American. Top performers in the BFL can move up to the Costa FLW Series or even the FLW Tour.

The 2017 Bassmaster Classic at Lake Conroe presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods is history. Jordan Lee secured his name in the history books by holding off hard charging Steve Kennedy and overcoming a lower unit issue that forced him to ditch all his plans and stick to one area, working it to perfection. Lee is no stranger to championship pressure, as he is a former Carhartt Bassmaster College Fishing Champion. But standing in 15th place entering the day, Jordan had what we all wish for, a huge bag on the final day. We can’t control what others catch, all we can do is Do Our Best! And Jordan did just that. What an accomplishment, winning the Classic as the 3rd youngest Champion in its history.
Steve Kennedy did his best on day 3, amassing a 5 limit bag of 21 pounds 15 ounces, coming up just shy by 1 pound 10 ounces from winning the big dance. The leader going into day 3 was Brent Ehrler, who managed to only amass 11 pounds 10 ounces for his 5 fish limit and finishing third.
The talk heading into the classic was filled with stories of huge bags. But while there were some big bags, the story was more how difficult it was to catch keeper bass. The minimum size limit on Conroe is 16’, making it very difficult to fill out a limit. On the first day, only half the field managed to do so, with 11 pounds being the lowest poundage, good for 31st place. Brent Ehrler had the biggest bag with 23 pounds 3 ounces. Nineteen anglers had 3 or less, with only 1 zero for the day. Day 2 had 30 anglers with 3 or less bass, with 6 anglers having no scorable bass. They caught bass, but were just short of the legal limit. Championship Sunday had 1`2 anglers with 3 or fewer fish and only 1 zero for the day.
I love the idea of big bags, but when we put anglers at a disadvantage by pushing the minimum size limit to 16 inches, I think we take away from the sport. When we take the best and put them in the biggest event of the year, do we really want to see them coming in and talking about how many fish they caught, but were too small to count on this lake? No, I want to see bass. I want to see that they struggled to find the big girls, but did manage to catch 5 keepers. I can’t see how having anglers with 1 or 2 bass for 2 days profits the sport. I don’t blame the anglers for that. I’ve had my days when I struggle, only catching 2 keeper bass during a tournament. Shouldn’t the classic be about showing everyone just how good anglers are or should be looking to see how they can struggle like the rest of us on waters that restrict the size of a legal bass? Or am I just looking at it all wrong?

Kansas’ Kickback High School Bass Teams Sweep Top Spots In Bassmaster High School Open

Kansas’ Kickback High School Bass Teams Sweep Top Spots In Bassmaster High School Open

[print_link]

OSAGE BEACH, Mo. — With less than two hours of competition remaining, Trevor Whisenant and Brett Lasley had only one keeper bass in the live-well.

It wasn’t exactly how they expected to fare in the Costa Bassmaster High School Midwest Open presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods held Sunday on Lake of the Ozarks.

Needless to say, the Kickback High School fishing team anglers were dejected. Their boat captain, Trevor’s dad Chris Whisenant, said the boys had lost focus after suffering through a less than productive morning on the 54,000-acre impoundment in central Missouri. The weather went from cold and rainy at daybreak, to downright muggy later in the afternoon. It looked as if the freshmen would finish way down the leaderboard in the open event that drew 66 teenage tandems from throughout the U.S.

But something clicked at about 1 p.m. It was part change of weather and part change of scenery. Throw in a healthy dose of an Alabama Rig, and the kids from Kansas made a comeback for the ages.

Trevor Whisenant and Brett Lasley caught four additional keepers in the closing minutes of the tournament, and the bag was buoyed by Lasley’s 5-pound, 6-ounce kicker. The late surge gave the boys a one-day total of 16 pounds, 8 ounces, and it was enough to earn them the Bassmaster High School Midwest Open title and a $1,000 prize for their school’s bass fishing team.

It was a grand turnaround for the best friends. They have fished together for recreation since grade school, but the Midwest Open was Lasley’s first competitive tournament. He made it a memorable one, with the 5-6 bass that came in the closing minutes of Sunday’s action. It also was an early birthday present for the 14-year old Lasley, who turns 15 later this week. His fishing partner just made 15 in early March.

“When I caught that big one, we felt like we had a chance,” he said.

Up until that big bass capped the team’s final flurry, those chances were iffy. Whisenant and Lasley were fishing not far from the Lake of the Ozarks State Park Public Boat Ramp No. 1 because they were worried about how foul weather might affect their runs to the far flung corners of the fishery. They finally latched onto the bass they sought with the Alabama Rig in approximately 32 feet of water.

“Some of them were in pockets, and some of them were on bluffs,” Chris Whisenant said. “The big ones were on the bluffs. The weather clearing up helped, and moving to the deeper water helped. But they [fished the Alabama rig] right off the bat.”

Many of the teams fished with Alabama Rigs on Sunday, and some caught sizable fish like the ones that were the norm during the Carhartt College Series Midwest Regional presented by Bass Pro Shops last week. But that tournament was held in colder weather, and continuing squalls from late Saturday night through Sunday mid-morning sent temperatures soaring.

The changing weather also disrupted the bite for the high schoolers. Many of them struggled, with only seven of the 50 teams weighing in five-bass limits.

All bets were off for the Kickback High Bass Club, though. Besides Whisenant and Lasley, teammates Zach Vielhauer and Remington Wagner placed second with a limit that weighed 14-7. Tyler Lubbat and Nolan Siara of the Buffalo Grove (Ill.) Bass Fishing Team placed third with a limit that totaled 14-1.

Brian Linder and Nathan Thompson of Eagan (Minn.) High School had the only other limit, and they finished fourth with a total of 13-13. Linder and Thompson briefly held the “Hot Seat” in the Midwest High School Open, after winning a tie-breaker with Riley Fletcher and Gavin White of the Cassville (Mo.) Wildcats. The Missouri tandem wound up finishing fifth overall because they only boated four fish, compared to the five Linder and Thompson weighed.

Each of those five teams will advance to the Costa Bassmaster High School National Championship, which will be held June 22-24 at a location to be disclosed later. Nehemiah Glenn and Joseph Gorman of Lakeville (Minn.) High finished sixth (13-2); and Tyler Christy and Scott Springer of Illinois placed seventh (12-9) to also advance to the national tournament.

Taylor Hamburger of the Northeastern Oklahoma High School Bass Club caught only one fish, but it was the big bass of the tournament at 6-2.

That fish edged Lasley’s 5-6 lunker to win big bass, but he and Whisenant had the biggest prize of all.

“It’s a great feeling to win the tournament,” Whisenant said. “Now we’ll go to the national tournament and do what we can there.”

Though they are only high school freshman, Whisenant and Lasley each were presented a $10,000 four-year scholarship to McKendree University in Illinois, should they choose to compete for that school’s bass fishing team when they graduate high school.

ARKANSAS’ HOUCHIN GOES WIRE-TO-WIRE, WINS COSTA FLW SERIES CENTRAL DIVISION OPENER ON LAKE DARDANELLE PRESENTED BY T-H MARINE

Mabelvale Angler Bests 203-boat Field to Earn Fourth Career Victory, $50,200

[print_link]

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (April 1, 2017) – Arkansas angler Quincy Houchin of Mabelvale, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 11 pounds, 7 ounces Saturday to lead wire-to-wire and win the Costa FLW Series Central Division opener on Lake Dardanelle presented by T-H Marine. Houchin’s three-day total of 15 bass weighing 45 pounds, 4 ounces, was enough to earn him the win by an 11-ounce margin and a check for $50,200.

“I was really nervous today when I was only bringing 11 pounds to the scale, but I knew that it was pretty tough out there for everybody,” said Houchin, a 10-year Bass Fishing League (BFL) veteran who was fishing in his first career FLW Series event. “Midday I lost a 5-pounder right at the boat and I thought that I had just lost $50,000. To get the win, today, in my first Costa event – I am blessed.”

Houchin said that he caught his fish this week fishing a backwater area in the mid- to upper-end of the lake. He said it was a ¾-mile long stretch full of wood and timber that was 4 to 8 feet at its deepest point, but he fished it as shallow as 2 feet.

“I was catching 8 to 10 keepers a day out of there,” Houchin said. “There wasn’t a lot of fish, but the ones that I was catching there were quality.”

Houchin said that of the 15 bass that he weighed in throughout the week, one came on a natural-green-colored Spro Bronzeye frog, two came on a black moss-colored Lucky Craft 2.5 crankbait and the rest came flipping a Texas-rigged green-pumpkin and red-colored Reaction Innovations Sweet Beaver.

“The key for me was finding that backwater where no one else was fishing,” Houchin said. “There is a huge sandbar you have to cross to get back there, and most of the time you can’t. But, I checked it in practice and the water was ankle deep, so I was able to work my way back in there. I don’t know if anyone else had tried, but I was the only boat in there all week.”

The top 10 pros on Lake Dardanelle were:

1st:           Quincy Houchin, Mabelvale, Ark., 15 bass, 45-4, $50,200

2nd:          Tom Silber, Labadie, Mo., 15 bass, 44-9, $20,600

3rd:          Joey Cifuentes, Clinton, Ark., 15 bass, 43-13, $14,500

4th:           Josh Ray, Alexander, Ark., 15 bass, 43-8, $12,500

5th:           Zach King, Clarksville, Ark., 15 bass, 42-1, $11,500

6th:           Evan Barnes, Hot Springs, Ark., 15 bass, 40-8, $9,250

7th:           Garrett Paquette, Canton, Mich., 14 bass, 39-1, $8,000

8th:           Shannon Pierce, Pine Bluff, Ark., 15 bass, 38-15, $7,000

BASS- Spring has finally sprung and the bass are heading into the shallows. At the end of March, in the extreme down lake region we already had a few bass on the beds. By the end of the first week of April, there will be many on the bed and even more up and cruising the banks looking for love.

Damiki Armor Shad soft jerkbaits and Dave’s Tournament Tackle Tigershad Spinnerbaits are two of my favorite way to catch bass this month. Fish them in and around the emerging willow grass, be sure to kill your bait on the outside edge of the grass and let it sink out of sight.

You can catch fish around and under boat docks all month long on shakey head rigged plastics, jigs, soft jerkbaits and shallow running crankbaits. Look for docks that have bluegill or crappie around them.

As we get closer to the end of the month, the shad and herring spawn will come into play, look for the on long shallow rocky points, rip rap banks, in front of sea walls (bulk heads) and on bluff rock banks first thing in the morning. Jerkbaits, spinnerbaits and top water baits will catch fish in and around this spawn.

If fishing for spawning fish, drop shot rigged plastics, shakey head rigged plastics and the Double “D” Skirtted Harvester Rig are great ways to fool these bass into biting. Just please remember C-P-R….. Catch-Photo-Release as these fish are our future in this lake remaining one of the best fisheries in Va.

CRAPPIE- These tasty panfish are headed to the shallows in droves, look for the around boat docks, beaver huts, willow grass and rock piles in the up lake region of the lake.

Two inch curl tail grubs rigged on a 1/16oz jig head will produce many fish for you. If you are catching only the smaller males up shallow, back off and fish deeper and slower, as the larger females are staged just out in front of them.

The will bite a variety of colors, we all have our favorite colors and here are a few of mine….. John Deere Green (Tractor Green), Wally World, Green Weenie and Electric Chicken.

If the bite is slow, small minnows rigged on a slip bobber is a great back up and sometimes you may need to employee minnows to get a school fired up.

STRIPER- You can catch striper in the uplake regions of the lake all month long. Bass Assassin Sea Shads rigged on a 1/4oz jig head, broken back redfins and top water walking baits will all produce fish. Loo for them above the 522 bridge on the North Anna arm of the lake and from the S-Turns up to 522 in Pamunkey.

LAKE LEVEL- Full Pool

McKendree Bearcats Claw To The Top Of The Final Standings In Bassmaster College Regional

[print_link]

OSAGE BEACH, Mo. — Jacob Louis and JT Russell of McKendree University jumped from third place on the final day today to take the championship title of the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Midwest Regional presented by Bass Pro Shops on Lake of the Ozarks with a three-day total of 61 pounds of bass.

After holding the lead on Wednesday’s opening round of competition and losing it on Thursday, the Bearcat duo produced a 22-11 limit to regain the top spot. Louis and Russell stuck to their game plan, even with the declining weather and temperatures, and they were able to boat four fish in the first few hours of fishing today.

They had found a promising area loaded with baitfish as their practice session ended earlier in the week and decided to start the tournament there Wednesday. It paid big dividends as they caught 22-10 on Wednesday to take an early lead. They did most of their damage with jerkbaits and swimbaits in the shad-filled pocket. Fish were schooling at the surface, making it possible to follow the pods of bait as they roamed around the pocket.

That night a massive rain and hailstorm cooled off the water temperatures and stained parts of the lake. Their Thursday weight suffered as a result and they dropped to third after catching 15-11, but were in striking range of the lead. They made the trip to their magic area on the final day, but they knew right away that it would be tougher to stay all day.

“We didn’t see much shad activity, and with the temperatures in the low 40s they just weren’t grouped up like early in the week,” Louis said.

After landing four bass, which included a 4- and a 5-pounder, their spot dried up and they had to scramble. The pair made their way back toward Osage Beach and finished their limit with a 5 pounder and, later, a 6 that enabled them to cull a smaller fish.

They won by 4 pounds, 10 ounces over the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Louie Dazzo and Collin Cropp who stayed in second place from start to finish this week at Lake of the Ozarks. After having weights of 19-12 and 21-3, the duo only managed 15-7 and stayed put on the standings in the runner-up position with a total weight of 56-6.

Dazzo and Cropp also found success with a jerkbait this week as well as a crankbait. It showed as they boated plenty of keepers on the final day, but they lacked the size they had caught on Wednesday and Thursday.

“We definitely had a slower morning than prior days, but we kept adjusting spots, and we started catching them,” Dazzo and Cropp said. “We saw some other teams catch some big ones in our same areas, but they seemed to be positioned deeper than we were so I’d have to believe the quality bass just moved slightly deeper.”

Jacob Harris and Tyler Smith of Southeast Missouri State University jumped from 12th place on Thursday into third after the final weigh-in because of their huge final day. Harris and Smith notched 23-9 on Friday, which claimed the Nitro Big Bag of the tournament and it was anchored by a 7-13 Big Bass. They finished with a three-day total of 55-3.

McKendree’s Brock Wilke and Brady Faust caught 22-2 on Friday to move into fourth, and Hunter Mills and Hunter McKinley of Murray State University rounded out the Top 5 after catching 17-14.

The Day 2 leaders, Nic Rand and Keegan Russell of Lake Superior State University only managed one fish on the final day, but it weighed 7-1 and kept them in the Top 10 as they finished ninth. For leading after Day 2, Rand and Russell won the Livingston Lures Leader award.

Hunter Scharphorn and Jake Dorony of Lake Superior State took the final qualifying spot with a three-day total of 41-11. The Top 19 teams will now move on to the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship, which will be held later this summer.
