OSAGE BEACH, Mo. — Jacob Louis and JT Russell of McKendree University took the lead on the first day of the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Midwest Regional presented by Bass Pro Shops on Lake of the Ozarks with 22 pounds, 10 ounces.

Wednesday’s weather-shortened competition day seemed to challenge the 138-boat field mentally, but the fishing was still on fire as Lake of the Ozarks has been pumping out plenty of bass and heavy weights over the last few weeks. With pending thunderstorms and winds strong enough to produce a tornado, Tournament Director Hank Weldon decided to shorten the day roughly two hours before anglers left the launch ramp.

“We consulted several groups like the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) and the National Weather Service based out of Springfield, Missouri,” Weldon said. “The analysis showed there was a good possibility of severe weather and that it would be dangerous to be on the water after 4 p.m.

With 138 boats in the field and first check at 2:45 p.m., there would still be anglers on the water and at the weigh-in site when the predicted weather hit Osage Beach, Mo. Weldon decided to make first flight check-in at 1 p.m., giving teams just over six hours to do their work on the water.

Louis, a sophomore, and Russell, a senior, didn’t let the shortened day hurt them as they got started fast and caught their first keeper within 20 minutes and then proceeded to fill their limit by 9:30 a.m. They searched for a bigger bass after that, but never found it. Luckily their best five gave them a lead over second place by 2-14.

“We figured there would be a morning bite,” Russell said. “I don’t think this incoming weather is going to hurt us, I think it could actually help us. It also seems there are more fish moving into our area every day.”

It is tough for fishing to be consistent on Lake of the Ozarks, so there could be a dramatic change in the standings, but the Bearcat team feels they will do well Thursday, even if it takes all day to catch a limit.

“I’m pretty sure we are around the right fish to do well on Thursday,” Louis said. “On Tuesday’s final practice day we pulled in and caught two 4-pounders and then left immediately. Catching fish there on Wednesday gave us even more confidence.”

The University of Wisconsin – Whitewater’s Louie Dazzo and Collin Cropp brought 19-12 to the stage and landed in second place after Wednesday’s competition day. They are followed closely by Lake Superior State’s Nic Rand and Keegan Russell who caught 19-7. Brock Wilke and Brady Faust of McKendree also had more than 19 pounds, which has them in fourth. Rounding out the Top 5 was the team of Justin and Austin Carr, identical twins competing for Heartland Community College with 18-8.

Cody Salzmann and Kenneth Price of the University of Arkansas – Pine Bluff caught the Big Bass Wednesday, which weighed 7-5.

All 138 teams will compete on Thursday before the field is cut to the Top 20 for Friday’s final day. The team currently in 20th place is Hunter Whiteley and Tyler Nekolny of Kansas State University with 14-15.

Thursday’s takeoff will happen at 6:45 a.m. CT at Grand Glaze Marina and weigh-in will also take place at the same location starting at 3 p.m.

Lowrance® Dominates 2017 GEICO® Bassmaster Classic

Lowrance® Dominates 2017 GEICO® Bassmaster Classic
Jordan Lee’s Win Marks Sixth Consecutive Championship for Electronics Leader

[print_link]

Tulsa, Okla. – Lowrance®, a world-leader in fishing electronics since 1957, continued its domination of America’s tournament-fishing circuit as Lowrance Pro Jordan Lee won the 2017 Bassmaster Classic Championship on Lake Conroe in Houston, Texas last weekend. A 25-year-old professional angler from Guntersville, Alabama, Lee became the sixth consecutive Lowrance angler to win the Classic when he finished with a three-day total of 56 pounds, 10 ounces, taking home $300,000 and the most coveted trophy in the sport. Steve Kennedy, who also competed in the event with Lowrance marine electronics, finished second with a total weight of 55 pounds, 1 ounce.

On the final day of the Classic, 15 of the top 25 competitors — including seven of the top 12 anglers – were using Lowrance HDS fishfinder/chartplotters to navigate and find key fish-holding areas. For Lee, 2017 was his second appearance at the Bassmaster Classic. He finished 6th in the 2014 Classic at Lake Guntersville in Alabama.

During last week’s practice at Lake Conroe, Lee used HDS-12 Gen3 with StructureScan® 3D imaging to identify an underwater “point” with a hard-bottom area that he thought would hold fish. He returned to the spot on the final day, where he was limited by mechanical issues on his boat, which held him in the same spot all day. Staying in that spot proved to be the difference as Lee jumped from 15th to first place with a 27-pound, 4-ounce, five-fish limit, the biggest single-day catch of the tournament.

“It actually helped me out,” Lee said. “I got to where I wanted to be. That’s all that really matters. I knew what the potential could be. It wasn’t like a big drop or anything; it was just on a point in the mouth of a cove. They (fish) were all around that hard bottom area.”

“All of us at Lowrance congratulate Jordan on his amazing performance and well-deserved win,” said Leif Ottosson, CEO, Navico. “We are proud to know that Lowrance has continued to play a key role in winning the last six Bassmaster Classics, and that Lowrance is still the number one brand of marine electronics at the Bassmaster Classic and Bassmaster Elite tour. For 60 years, the key to success has been driven by Lowrance sonar innovation and our commitment to deliver meaningful benefits for anglers.”

The 2017 Bassmaster Elite Series continues on April 6-9, as anglers will compete on Toledo Bend Reservoir near Many, Louisiana.

OVERVIEW- Longer days and warmer water temps will make for good fishing! Fishing has been fair to good this past month! Water temperature will be in the 50’s to low 60’s. Best times will be early morning, late afternoon, windy days and cloudy days. Striped and largemouth bass fishing has been good this past month. April is usually one of the best months to fish!

Largemouth Bass- Fishing for largemouth bass will be good this month as water temps warm and they feed heavily before the spawn. Best lures will be jigs, jerk baits, drop shots, shallow running crank baits, spinner baits, Carolina rigs and shaky heads. Most largemouth bass will be in their spawning patterns the month. Secondary points, shallow coves, rocks, stumps and docks will be the best areas to try your luck. Best depths will be from the 2 to 10 feet deep. Remember to take care of the bass during the spawn and release them! Warm days will bring the water temperatures up in the afternoons, making for a good window to catch a large bass in shallow water.

Smallmouth Bass- Fishing will be good. Best areas will be shallow humps, stumps, shallow rocky areas and secondary flats. Best lures will be tubes, jigs, jerk baits, hair jigs and medium diving crank baits. Best areas will be in the mid to the lower sections of the lake. Cloudy days with wind and at night are good times to try your luck! Look for areas with rocks, stumps and flat points next to deep water. Look for humps and isolated rocks near deep water ledges. They feed heavily on crawfish around the full moon. Some smallmouth will spawn this month.

Striped Bass- Fishing will be good this month. Stripers will be caught in the mid sections of the lake, the lower section towards the dam and in the large creeks. Best lures will be swim baits, buck tails and Zoom flukes fished on 1/4 to 3/8 oz. lead heads. Best time to fish is cloudy days, early morning, windy days, night time and late afternoon. The best depths will be from the surface to 30 feet deep. Live bait fished on down lines and planner boards work good this month. They will constantly be on the move. Find the largest concentration of shad. Night fishing will be good this month. Lures like Red Fins, Thunder Sticks and large Rapalas work when the shad come to the shoreline at night.

Crappie- Fishing for crappie will be great this month. The best depths will be 2 to 12 ft. deep. Crappie will be found around docks, brush piles, and fallen trees. Docks with brush piles are usually good areas to hold crappie. Small live minnows and 1½ to 2 inch tubes or shad shaped plastic lures fished on 1/32 to 1/16 oz. lead heads will work best to catch crappie this month. Best areas are the main creeks and the upper section of the lake. Most crappie will be spawning this month.

TIP OF THE Month- Always wear your life jacket. Most fish will be caught near their spawning areas.Try to find the areas with the largest concentration of bait fish. When the water temps get above 55 degrees and the water gets very clear, you should try fishing at night. You can also hear reports about local fishing on the website: THE BASS CAST RADIO SHOW each month. Make sure your running lights are on after dark! Remember to TAKE A KID FISHING!

KENTUCKY LAKE READIES FOR THIRD-ANNUAL YETI FLW COLLEGE FISHING OPEN

KENTUCKY LAKE READIES FOR THIRD-ANNUAL YETI FLW COLLEGE FISHING OPEN

[print_link]

GILBERTSVILLE, Ky. (March 28, 2017) – FLW College Fishing is headed to Kentucky Lake April 7-8 for the third annual YETI FLW College Fishing Open. The no-entry fee tournament, hosted by Moors Resort and Marina and the Kentucky Lake Convention & Visitors Bureau, will allow registration from any eligible college team from across the United States, regardless of division. Anglers who finish within the top 20, along with one additional team for every 10 teams over 200 competing, will automatically qualify for the 2018 YETI FLW College Fishing National Championship, and the champions will take home a Ranger Z175 boat with a 90-horsepower Evinrude outboard.

The first FLW College Fishing Open in 2015 drew a massive field of 194 college teams from around the country, shattering the record to become the largest collegiate fishing tournament ever held. The record was broken again in 2016 when the field grew to 203. Although a new record was set at an FLW College Fishing event on Lake Guntersville last month, event organizers still expect to again draw more than 200 boats, likely the largest field in FLW College Fishing Open history.

“This one is shaping up to be a good tournament,” said FLW Tour pro Dan Morehead of Paducah, Kentucky, a 15-time Forrest Wood Cup qualifier. “The fishing could be lights out, on fire, if the fish are shallow and the bite is on. Barring some nasty weather, I think it could take 46 to 47 pounds over two days to win this event.”

Morehead said that simple spring-time baits would likely be heavily utilized by competitors – spinnerbaits, ChatterBaits and vibrating jigs and crankbaits. Soft plastics like a Zoom Brush Hog or a Yamamoto Senko could also play a role.

“There isn’t much flipping water yet – we’re still a couple of feet away from that – but the tournament is going to be hitting close to the spawn.

“If this was my first time to the lake, I’d launch, point my boat south on Kentucky and run an hour to start fishing,” Morehead said. “That’s where the tournament will be won and where they’ll catch the big 25-pound limits. I would be down fishing around Birdsong or New Johnsonville. There is a larger population of fish there, and they’re bigger. Down south is going to be the deal on Kentucky Lake.”

Schools are allowed to register up until the morning of the tournament. Entries may be made either by phone or at FLWFishing.com.

Finally got a pretty day for the 58 boats that arrived to fish the Cashion Fishing Rods Spring Team Tournament Bass Trail Qualifier #3 at Falls Lake. The weather was very nice for March with winds light in the am and up to 8 mph in the afternoon, the air temps ranged from 54 to 78 and the water level was about normal. Surface water temps averaged 56 degrees and the water was a little dingy! The bite was pretty light.
The fish are still staging for the spawn in around 4 to 6′ of water. It won’t be long at Falls before the nurseries open! The Father/Son Team of Dane & Zack Sallinger caught 5 nice bass weighing a total of 21.30 lbs to take 1stPlace and 1st Place TWT for a total of $2,060 in winnings!
The 2nd Place team of Owen Penhollow & George Just (subbing for Tyler Goss) caught 5 bass weighing 20.66 lbs. and took home $605 in winnings. The 3rd Place team of Billy Bledsoe & Brian McDonald brought to the scales 5 bass weighing 20.21 lbs. and they also won 1st Place Big Fish (8.63 lbs.) to rack up $1,095 in winnings.
