COX LEADS DAY ONE OF FLW TOUR AT HARRIS CHAIN OF LAKES PRESENTED BY RANGER BOATS

COX LEADS DAY ONE OF FLW TOUR AT HARRIS CHAIN OF LAKES PRESENTED BY RANGER BOATS

Kentucky’s Ferguson Leads Co-Anglers

[print_link]

LEESBURG, Fla. (March 9, 2017) Mud Hole Custom Tackle pro John Cox of DeBary, Florida, caught a five-bass limit weighing 25 pounds, 11 ounces to take the lead on opening day of the FLW Tour at the Harris Chain of Lakes. The event, presented by Ranger Boats, features a field of 326 of the world’s best bass-fishing professionals and co-anglers casting for top awards of up to $125,000 cash in the pro division and up to $25,000 cash in the co-angler division.

The weather conditions in central Florida were near perfect Thursday, and anglers experienced warm, sunny conditions with a minimal northwest breeze. Although the majority of the bass on the Harris Chain are now in their postspawn phase, there were still quite a few largemouth found on beds by the FLW Tour anglers.

“I think the fish in the canals are pretty much done, but we’re still seeing that last wave of bass come up from the main lake,” said Cox, the reigning Forrest Wood Cup champion with more than $930,000 in career earnings. “I caught three today looking at them. The others I caught casting.

“I had around 10 to 15 fish on beds marked during practice that I went to today, but they were gone,” Cox continued. “Luckily, the wind wasn’t blowing today and it opened up a few areas that were unfishable during our practice time. I just went fishing. I started off near takeoff and just worked my way around most of the chain. I didn’t go through any locks, but I ran the whole tank of gas out.”

Cox said that his history on the Harris Chain definitely helped him on Day One.

“I’ve been fishing here forever. I remember my mom driving me out here with the jon boat and dropping me off at the pier. It is awesome to be here, at a major event, fishing on the lake that I grew up on.

“I really struggled at the first two events this year and I wanted to just get five in the boat today and I was lucky to get five good ones. Now I’m going to go home and try to figure out how to do it again tomorrow.”

The top 10 pros after day one on the Harris Chain are:

1st:          Mud Hole Custom Tackle pro John Cox, DeBary, Fla., five bass, 25-11

2nd:         Shane LeHew, Catawba, N.C., five bass, 23-15

3rd:          Jim Moynagh, Carver, Minn., five bass, 23-9

4th:          Tim Frederick, Leesburg, Fla., five bass, 21-15

5th:          Livingston Lures pro Andy Morgan, Dayton, Tenn., five bass, 21-13

6th:          Carl Jocumsen, Frisco, Texas, five bass, 20-12

7th:          Bryan Thrift, Shelby, N.C., five bass, 19-10

8th:          Matt Wittekiend, Angleton, Texas, five bass, 18-15

9th:          Andrew Upshaw, Tulsa, Okla., five bass, 18-4

10th:        Rusty Trancygier, Hahira, Ga., five bass, 18-2

Cody Bird of Granbury, Texas, earned the day’s $500 Big Bass award in the pro division thanks to a 7-pound, 14-ounce largemouth.

Overall there were 769 bass weighing 1,888 pounds, 11 ounces caught by 162 pros Thursday. The catch included 142 five-bass limits.

Chris Ferguson of Wittensville, Kentucky, leads the co-angler division with five bass weighing 20 pounds, 1 ounce, followed by Trey Shaw of Dunnellon, Florida, who weighed five bass totaling 19-10, good for second place.

The top 10 co-anglers after day one on the Harris Chain are:

1st:          Chris Ferguson, Wittensville, Ky., five bass, 20-1

2nd:         Trey Shaw, Dunnellon, Fla., five bass, 19-10

3rd:          Tyler Woolcott, Port Orange, Fla., five bass, 18-0

4th:          Kevin Thomas, Miramar, Fla., five bass, 17-1

5th:          Tyler Meredith, Oliver Springs, Tenn., five bass, 16-11

6th:          Steven Hatala, Saint Clair Shores, Mich., five bass, 15-12

7th:          Jeffery Mathews, Maitland, Fla., five bass, 15-8

8th:          Robert Crosnoe, Invernes, Fla., five bass, 15-5

9th:          Jeffrey Clark, Hoover, Ala., four bass, 14-9

10th:        Melissa Young, Tavares, Fla., five bass, 14-8

Shaw earned $250 for the Big Bass award in the co-angler division with an 8-pound, 13-ounce largemouth.

Overall there were 546 bass weighing 996 pounds, 10 ounces caught by 154 co-anglers Thursday. The catch included 66 five-bass limits.

In FLW Tour competition, pros and co-anglers are randomly paired each day, with pros supplying the boat, controlling boat movement and competing against other pros. Co-anglers fish from the back deck against other co-anglers. The full field of 326 anglers competes Thursday and Friday. Co-angler competition concludes following Friday’s weigh-in, while the top 20 pros based on their two-day accumulated weight advance to Saturday. Only the top 10 pros continue competition Sunday, with the winner determined by the heaviest accumulated weight from the four days of competition.

Throughout the season, anglers are also vying for valuable points in hopes of qualifying for the 2017 Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of professional bass fishing. The 2017 Forrest Wood Cup will be on Lake Murray in Columbia, South Carolina, Aug. 11-13.

The total purse for the FLW Tour at the Harris Chain of Lakes presented by Ranger Boats is more than $800,000, including $10,000 through 50th place in the Pro division. The tournament is hosted by Lake County, Florida.

Prior to the weigh-ins Saturday and Sunday, FLW will host a free Family Fishing Expo at the Venetian Gardens from noon to 4 p.m. each day. The Expo is a chance for fishing fans to meet their favorite anglers, enjoy interactive games, activities and giveaways provided by FLW sponsors, and learn more about the sport of fishing and other outdoor activities.

Also for youth, the FLW Foundation’s Unified Fishing Derby will be held at the Venetian Gardens on Saturday from 9-11 a.m. The event is hosted by FLW Foundation pro Cody Kelley along with other FLW Tour anglers, and is free and open to area youth 15 years of age and younger and Special Olympics athletes. Zona Live Debuts Tuesday On Bassmaster.com

[print_link]

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Mix the technology of Bassmaster LIVE with the zaniness of Mark Zona and you get the latest Bassmaster.com offering — “Zona Live.”

“Think fun and interactive,” Zona said. “A 4-hour fishing funhouse.”

The latest live offering on Bassmaster.com will be Zona plying a body of water with a special guest. The first of four planned live shows this year will air from 8 a.m. to noon CT on Tuesday, March 14. Greg Hackney, the 2014 Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year, will be Zona’s first guest on a lake in southern Louisiana.

“I’m excited about Zona Live as much as any project I’ve ever worked on,” said Zona, who’s served as a Bassmaster TV analyst for 12 years, as well as hosting Zona’s Awesome Fishing Show. “I’m the type of viewer who wants to see it all unscripted — the good, bad and the ugly. I’m sure we’ll have a lot of those highs and lows because that’s what fishing is.

“Although we will have scouted the lake, what you see — whether we catch ’em or not — will be happening in real-time.”

Mike McKinnis, vice president of media content for JM Associates and producer of The Bassmasters, said plans for Zona Live have been in the works since around the time B.A.S.S. began its live programming at the 2015 Classic.

The innovative program, pioneered in the realm of competitive fishing by JM Outdoors and B.A.S.S., employ the same high definition cameras that capture on-the-water action for The Bassmasters show on ESPN2, to stream video online through Bassmaster.com.

“We’ve kind of perfected the live show, so why not take one of our biggest stars in the sport, pair him with one of the biggest Elite anglers in the sport and watch what they do live?” McKinnis said. “With a TV show, you get to watch 22 minutes — with Zona Live, you’re getting four hours of content and have feedback with both people on camera.”

Zona hopes to turn the final 10 minutes of each hour into a fast-moving, question-and-answer period. He wants viewers to ask anything, from what size hooks the anglers are using to “why puppy dogs smell so good.”

Prizes will be awarded for the best questions submitted, and Zona will act as judge.

“I already have the prizes, and they’re awesome,” he said. Among them, he suggested, might be “Viewer of the Day” or “Viewer of the Week.”

“I want our viewers to feel comfortable asking anything to me or our guest … no matter how off-the-wall it is.”

Zona fans and other viewers can join the conversation and pose questions at #ZonaLive on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. This hashtag will be monitored to bring the best posts onto the show.

St. Croix’s Jesse Wiggins fishes with an open-mind and…The Best Rods on Earth

A Student of the Lake

St. Croix’s Jesse Wiggins fishes with an open-mind and…The Best Rods on Earth

Park Falls, WI (March 8, 2017) – A great football coach once said, “The more you know the better you play.” Makes perfect sense… Picture a quarterback pouring over film, banking to memory the formations and tendencies of a formidable defensive secondary. Heck, the field general will be able to take snaps and throw from his studied mind’s eye without making any game-time assessments. Right?

Not if your QB is Bassmaster ELITE angler and recently-recruited St. Croix pro Jesse Wiggins. Sure, he’s interested in historical evidence, but Wiggins isn’t going to hang his helmet on past performances. And that’s precisely how he’ll approach the Bassmaster Classic on Houston, Texas’ Lake Conroe: assess, adjust and conquer.

It’s been a successful ploy, too. The Cullman, Alabama basser had never dipped a toe in Florida’s Harris Chain of Lakes, but that didn’t stop him from earning the podium at the 2017 Bass Pro Shops Southern Open #1. And that open-mindedness has propelled Wiggins all through his career. “I always fish with an open mind,” says the Zen-like competitor. “I haven’t been to most of the ELITE lakes.” No surprise, really, since Wiggins is a rookie on the circuit.

Yes, a rookie…

Now even though Wiggins fancies himself at “doing things others aren’t doing,” he does understand and appreciate seasonal bass behavior. Moreover, Wiggins has done enough research on 21,000-acre Lake Conroe to surmise certain strategies will be in play.

St. Croix’s ICAST award-winning Legend Glass has quickly become the defacto crankbaiting rod for serious bassers.

First off, he plans to pick apart some docks, as pre-, post- and spawning bass uniformly relate to these manmade shoreline structures. “There are so many boat docks on Conroe, but not all of them will have fish.” So, with memory in mind, coupled with a live assessment of the lake, Wiggins will focus on specific dock structures. “I’ll start with docks on points and the last dock on any outside pockets.” Any docks associated drop-offs or brush-piles are a bonus, he says.

Wiggins expects to open the show skipping Zoom trick-worms on a shaky-head jig, weaponizing with a 7’ 6” St. Croix Legend Elite spinning rod. “The sensitivity of the Legend Elite blows me away.” And he’ll be spooled with 12-lb. Seaguar INVISX, his universal brand of choice.

Conroe, being an impoundment, is sure to feature some lake-making riprap. And that’s where Wiggins will be if the dock fish are misbehaving. He’ll first check-out the topwater scene, chunking a Jenko Flea Bag 100, trying to walk that dog to victory. If surface acrobatics aren’t in the script, Wiggins intends to muscle big worms midst the rocks. Either way, he’ll be making ends meet with a 7’ 1”, medium-heavy, x-fast, St. Croix Legend Xtreme casting rod teamed with 30 lb. Seaguar Smackdown braid and 20 lb. mono leader.

Winning Best Freshwashter Rod at ICAST 2013, St. Croix’s innovative and luxurious Legend Xtreme features a proprietary sculpted handle with Xtreme-Skin that’s both comfortable and hyper-sensitive.

Timing-wise, the dates of the Classic land smack-dab during that ‘tweener period. The bass could be anywhere from pre-spawn feasting to post-spawn recuperating, biological clocks influencing their daily activities. Wiggins says if post-spawn is in play, he’ll search for roosting hens on offshore brush, especially wood linked to humps and breaks. Such a scenario begets cranking, so he’ll bust out an assortment of St. Croix’s new, award-winning, Legend Glass rods. The advanced glass rods cast long with exceptional smoothness, while a limber tip section absorbs slack and flexes freely when bass lose their minds boatside. He’ll inaugurate crankbait-time with a Jenko CD25 tethered to 12-lb. INVISX.

So, welcome St. Croix’s newest professional bass fishing ambassador, and appreciate his conscious blend of on-the-water training and rotisserie of proven methods.

Jesse, we’ll be rooting for you.

First Look: River2Sea Bully Wa 2 By Walker Smith March 6th 2017

First Look: River2Sea Bully Wa 2

The design of this topwater frog gives it great castability and an outstanding hookup ratio.

Fishing a topwater frog is one of my favorite things to do, so I always jump at the opportunity to test new models. I had never used a River2Sea frog in the past, so I really had no preconceived notions when I got to try the new Bully Wa 2. I had no idea what to expect.

I’ve been testing this frog for quite some time and it accounted for some nice fish catches. I even caught some in 54-degree water. If you’re a fellow frogger, there are some things I think you should know about this particular model.
