McClelland Wins On Table Rock Again
McClelland Wins On Table Rock Again
BRANSON, Mo. — There is just no place like home for Bassmaster Elite Series pro Mike McClelland.
[print_link]
Although he resides in Bella Vista, Ark., McClelland could consider Table Rock Lake his home waters since he spent so much time fishing there as a kid while staying at his grandparents’ property near the lake. He relied on his extensive experience on Table Rock to win the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open today, with a three-day total weight of 44 pounds, 4 ounces.
The win was his second B.A.S.S. victory on Table Rock, which earned him the top prize of a Triton 19XP/Mercury 200 Pro XS rig valued at $45,000, along with $8,491 in cash and a berth in the 2018 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods if he fishes the remaining two Opens. The Arkansas pro also won the 2014 Bassmaster Elite event at Table Rock.
The first two days McClelland had success keeping his boat in 45 to 50 feet of water and throwing a Cabela’s 3.4 Finesse Swimmer swimbait with a 1/4-ounce underspin jighead to bass holding in standing timber 25- to 32-feet deep. McClelland credited his Garmin Panoptix electronics for helping him see the bass he was catching from the trees. He also caught some shallower fish on a Spro McStick stickbait and a Spro Rock Crawler crankbait.
“The wind killed me (today),” McClelland said. “It was gusting straight down the stretch I was fishing, and I never could get a good angle to fish the trees I was keying on. The Panoptix had allowed me to back off the trees and see exactly where the trees were. I could watch my bait come over the tops of the trees where the fish were coming up. But when I had all that wind and all that turbulence, I couldn’t stay steady enough to know where to throw.”
Largemouth bass made up the bulk of his catch the first two days, but he caught only spotted bass today. He finally abandoned his deep fish in the afternoon and switched to the McStick stickbait to complete his limit weighing 13-5.
After a tough first day, Bassmaster Elite Series pro Josh Bertrand put together two solid days to finish second in the pro division with 43-1. The Gilbert, Ariz., angler weighed in only four bass the first day, but he bounced back with 18- and 17-pound limits respectively the next two days. Yesterday, he found all of his bass relating to two pods of shad.
“Today we went out looking for shad,” he said. “They were in different areas, but we found two more groups and had two really good flurries.”
Bertrand said he caught bass in deep water (down to 30 feet) vertical fishing with a Berkley Gulp Minnow on a drop shot rig. He also caught bass about 10 feet deep on a Berkley 4-inch Beat Shad swimbait with a 1/4-ounce jighead and another thicker bodied swimbait on a 3/8-ounce jighead.
Other anglers finishing in the Top 5 of the pro division were Drew Sloan, Scurry, Texas, third place, 42-14; Roy Hawk, Lake Havasu City, Ariz., fourth, 42-5; and Pete Wenners, Galena, Mo., fifth, 41-15.
Throwing a 2.8-inch Keitech, Swing Impact Fat swimbait on a 3/16-ounce Owner jighead helped 26-year-old Brian Murphy of Sulphur, La., win the co-angler division with 19-7. The Lake Charles Tackle Shop employee received the first-place prize of a $30,000 Nitro Z18/Mercury 150 Pro XS package.
The Phoenix Boats Big Bass Award of $750 on the pro side went to Ernie Stumpf III of Frisco, Texas, with a 6-1 largemouth. Brian Murphy weighed in a 5-3 largemouth to earn the Phoenix Boats Big Bass Award of $250 on the co-angler side.
Randy Sullivan of Breckenridge, Texas, received the Livingston Lures Leader Award of $250 for finishing as the top pro on Day 2. Finishing as the Day 2 leader on the co-angler side, Mike Jones of Fayetteville, Ark., received a Livingston Lures gift pack worth $250.
McClelland also earned the Power-Pole Captain’s Cash Award of $500.

BAINBRIDGE, Ga. (March 4, 2017) – FLW Tour pro Buddy Gross of Chickamauga, Georgia, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 23 pounds, 7 ounces, Saturday to claim top honors at the Costa FLW Series Southeastern Division tournament on Lake Seminole presented by Mud Hole Custom Tackle. Gross’ three-day total of 15 bass weighing 64 pounds, 11 ounces, was enough to earn him $52,200.

“I’m feeling really great right now,” said Gross, who also logged a top-10 finish at the Series Southeastern Division opener on Lake Okeechobee in January. “This is an awesome lake and I’ve had a great time on it this week. The Lord has really blessed me.”
Gross said he caught the majority of his bass in Spring Creek. He said his area revolved around a unique turn in the creek channel that acted as a highway for bass to travel to shallow spawning flats.
“Every fish I weighed in came off that 100-yard stretch,” said Gross. “It was like a pocket in the deep grass line that led straight to the spawning flats and there was timber in the middle of it. The grass down the sides was about 14- or 15-feet tall and it was green and healthy.”
Gross said he used two baits to catch his fish – a Tennessee Shad-colored Zoom Swimmer Paddle Tail Swimbait, and a white Zoom Magnum Super Fluke with a Tennessee River Tremor Head. He said he each lure was equally productive in catching a total of 17 keepers throughout the event.
“I’d throw the Swimmer up over the grass early on in the day, and then I’d take the fluke and slow roll it through the timber to catch suspended fish in the afternoon,” said Gross.
Though his bass made subtle moves throughout the week, Gross was still able to put together the weight he needed to win.
“On Thursday they were wadded up tight, and yesterday they were scattered,” said Gross. “They were in two different spots today, but close together. It was just one of those textbook kinds of areas that you dream about.”
The top 10 pros on Lake Seminole were:
1st: Buddy Gross, Chickamauga, Ga., 15 bass, 64-11, $52,200

GEORGETOWN, S.C. — Patrick Walters and Tyler All of the University of South Carolina claimed the title of the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Southern Regional presented by Bass Pro Shops at Winyah Bay with a three-day total of 47 pounds, 14 ounces of bass.
The Summerville, S.C., anglers stayed consistent on Thursday and Friday of this three-day event and saved their explosion for Championship Saturday as they weighed 20 pounds, 11 ounces — the heaviest five-bass limit of the tournament.
Unlike most teams this week, Walters and All targeted an offshore school of bass and capitalized with a solid limit each of the first two days. Most of the bass they weighed in were caught during the first hour of their fishing time. The only thing they were missing each day, was a bigger bass that would provide a comfortable margin over the rest of the field. Today, when it counted most, they checked that accomplishment off the list.
“We targeted bends in the river where the tide and current would concentrate groups of fish,” Walters said. “We focused our efforts on the main river.”
As usual, the pair limited out early and even culled a few times. But the bite stalled after the first hour and half. They changed spots, but Walters felt an overwhelming urge to go back to their bread-and-butter fishing hole that had placed them in the lead.
“We fished a few other areas within this river, and we just didn’t feel comfortable there today,” Walters said. “We went back to our best area and stuck it out. The bigger fish bit for us today.”
The Gamecock teammates utilized both soft and hard jerkbaits to mimic shad and entice bites in a river ditch on the Santee River. They caught most of their bass on soft jerkbaits, but the biggest fish of the day hit a hard jerkbait.
Their 7-pound, 6-ounce largemouth today landed them the Bassmaster Big Bass Award, and they also managed the Nitro Boats Big Bag of the Tournament with the 20-11 stringer. For taking the lead after Day 2, the duo also took the Livingston Lures Day 2 Leader Award worth $500 in merchandise.
Coastal Carolina’s Jonathan Kelley and Max McQuaide stayed in second place after weighing 12-15 on Championship Saturday. They managed 38-14 for the three-day event, but fell to Walters and All by 9 pounds.
Kelley and McQuaide ran their boat more than 70 miles one way to get to an area in the Pee Dee River where they found plenty of bass all day, but no big ones. Their struggles on Thursday with cloudy conditions hurt their week, but they managed to stay consistent and land limits in the 12- to 14-pound range all week.
The duo of Noah Pescitelli and Sean Hall of the Savannah College of Art and Design jumped from sixth into third on the final day, as they brought the second biggest bag of the day to the scales. They stayed consistent the first two rounds, weighing limits in the 10-pound range. Their 13-14 limit today produced a final tally of 35-4.
Collin Smith and Ben Stone of Lander University were fourth with 34-5, and Rick Couch Jr. and John Kaufman of Central Florida finished fifth with 31-7.
The Top 13 teams earned a berth in the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship, to be held this summer.

On Any Given Sunday

The A.R.E. Truck Caps Bassmaster Elite at Lake Okeechobee is in the books and what a trilling 4 days of fishing. Ott Defoe took the lead on day 1 with an impressive bag of 31 pounds 3 ounces, almost 5 pounds ahead of Stephen Browning and almost 6 pounds ahead of Timmy Horton. On day 2, Timmy had a sweet 30 pound 4 ounce bag, knocking Ott into 2nd by almost 8 pounds and Stephen dropped to 5th almost 14 pound behind. The 3rd day saw very little change on the leader board, with Timmy holding on to the lead over Ott by almost 9 pounds.
Championship Sunday was a day of feast or famine for some. Ott made a hard charge and had an impressive bag of 18 pounds 13 ounces to make Timmy sweat as he came up on the stage, Timmy struggled that day, finding 5 fish that weighed just 11 pounds and 7 ounces, but was just enough to hold on to the lead and earn him the victory by just 1 pound 4 ounces. A thrilling finish to the weekend to say the least.
I have met Timmy Horton on different occasions, especially at the Reel American Heroes Foundation Tournament here locally. I like him a lot, as he is always smiling and willing to talk to anyone. This is a victory he needed badly too. But how many people actually thought he was going to do it? How many actually picked him for their fantasy fishing team? If you did, you knew something the rest of us didn’t know. Out of the top 10 leaders on fantasy fishing, only one person picked Timmy in Group E. Out of the top 25 leaders, only 2 picked Timmy. What did they know, or are they just great fans?
We all know that on any given weekend, any of the Elite anglers can indeed pull out the win. We have seen 2 events this year and 2 winners. Jacob Wheeler won the first event, but struggled and finished 61st this time. Timmy Horton won on Okeechobee but finished 96th at Cherokee. On any given Sunday! We all dream of us being up there, and walking away with that trophy held high. On any given Sunday it could be us. If we could find the right spot, if only.
We all know the pain of struggling while fishing. We have all gone out and were glad that we found at least one bass. We have all fished all day and then at the last minute, everything starts to click and we find exactly what they want and where they are, and just wonder why we didn’t do it earlier.
But just like Timmy, we don’t give up. Timmy hadn’t won an Elite Series since 2007 when he won the Champion’s Choice on Lake Champlain. And he topped his winning weight from the 2004 Southern Open on Lake Okeechobee by almost 12 pounds. It has been a lot of lows and some highs for him over his career on the Elite Series, but he never gave up. He knew, on any given Sunday. Having the drive, the desire, to win doesn’t guarantee victory. I have the drive, I have the desire, but I can only dream of being an Elite Angler. But on any given Sunday, it could be me or you. Are you ready to lift that trophy high? Are you?
Sullivan Steps Up Into The Lead At Central Open On Table Rock

BRANSON, Mo. — Randy Sullivan avoided making another emergency run and made a move instead into first place at the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open on Table Rock Lake.
The Breckenridge, Texas, angler weighed in a five-bass limit of 17 pounds, 6 ounces to take over the pro division lead with 32-11 overall.
“Yesterday was kind of interesting,” the 24-year-old Lake Fork guide said. “I actually made about a 55-mile run, and my trolling motor cable broke 10 minutes into fishing.” So he drove his boat all the way back to the takeoff site, where the Mercury service crew repaired the troller motor. He then made the run back to his spot on the James arm, where he caught a 15-5 limit in about three hours of fishing.
“Today I thought I was going to have a full day to fish, and it was going to be awesome,” Sullivan said. The morning bite was slow for him, though, as he caught only a couple of small keepers.
However, his co-angler partner, Larry Foster, was catching bass, so Sullivan knew he was in the right area. “He started out putting it to me pretty good, and he ended up letting me use the right bait,” Sullivan said.
Although Sullivan was using the same type of lure, Foster was using a different color. “The color was everything there,” said Sullivan, who completed his limit after switching to Foster’s color.
Bassmaster Elite Series pro Mike McClelland took a trip down memory lane to move into second place with 30-15. “It’s really crazy sometimes how (fishing familiar places) will actually work for you,” he said. “What’s crazy about the ‘history’ I am fishing here is it is history from back when I was 13 or 14 years old.
“My grandmother and grandfather developed a piece of property on the lake, and I spent countless hours fishing in a little 14-foot aluminum V-bottom in the same creek I have been in and a couple of creeks close to that one,” McClelland said. “So when you understand the layout of the creek like that one, it makes it real easy to start patterning fish.” The Bella Vista, Ark., pro has been catching his bass each day on a Cabela’s 3.4 Swimmer, Spro McStick stickbait and Spro Rock Crawler crankbait.
The rest of the Top 5 pro division anglers include Roy Hawk, Lake Havasu City, Ariz., third place, 30-8; Ernie Stumpf III, Frisco, Texas, fourth, 28-13; and Drew Sloan, Scurry, Texas, fifth, 27-15.
Fishing with Bassmaster Elite Series pro Brian Snowden helped Mike Jones of Fayetteville, Ark., retain first place in the co-angler division with a total of six bass weighing 17-7. “Brian was great,” Jones said.
“When we got in the boat this morning, he told me he was going to do all he could to help me get my three fish, and he did it. He was rooting for me all day long.”
Stumpf leads in the pro division of the Phoenix Boats Big Bass Award with his 6-1 largemouth. The leader in the co-angler division of the Phoenix Boats Big Bass Award is Brian Murphy of Sulphur, La. with a 5-3 largemouth.
The host for this event is ExploreBranson.com. Saturday’s launch will be held at Table Rock State Park Marina at 6:30 a.m. CT. The final weigh-in will move to the Bass Pro Shops at 1 Bass Pro Shop Drive in Branson and will begin at approximately 3:30 p.m.

University Of South Carolina Team Moves To The Top At Bassmaster College Southern Regional

GEORGETOWN, S.C. — Patrick Walters and Tyler All of the University of South Carolina stayed consistent and caught 13 pounds, 12 ounces to take the lead at the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Southern Regional presented by Bass Pro Shops at Winyah Bay, bringing a total weight of 27-3 on Friday.
Some adverse conditions were presented to the full field of anglers as the temperature dropped 30 degrees overnight. The strong north wind that was present on Thursday blew in a cold front, and teams had to adjust on the fly Friday.
The Summerville, S.C., anglers used their local knowledge to the fullest as they capitalized on their area and brought another 13 pounds to the weigh-in scales. Even with the change in weather, they stuck to their plan and executed.
“Everything went as planned today,” Walters said. “Consistency pays the bills. If you’re fluctuating weights day-to-day, then you probably aren’t in contention to win.”
With water temperatures in the 60s, and bass thinking about spawning, the last thing anglers want is a cold front that may stall the bite and reposition the bass. The 35-degree air temperature seemed to impact the anglers more than the bass, but another night of cold temperatures could tell the fish to move from their staging areas.
“The fish weren’t as active as they were Thursday,” Walters said. “We had a chance at a bigger bag yesterday and didn’t make it happen. We are interested to see how the weather changes things, but if I had to fish an area for a 5-pounder on Winyah Bay it would be the area we are in for sure.”
The former college champion is cautiously optimistic, but nothing is a given on Winyah Bay where consistency isn’t the easiest thing to duplicate. They take a 1-4 lead into the final day over the Coastal Carolina teammates Jonathan Kelley and Max McQuaide.
Kelley and McQuaide jumped from sixth into second place because they brought the biggest bag to the scales on Friday. Their 14-12 weight vaulted them up the leaderboard and put them in contention to not only qualify for the Carhartt Bassmastr National Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops, but to also contend for a title on Saturday.
The Coastal Carolina duo desperately needed sunshine on Thursday and the windy, cloudy conditions didn’t do them any favors, but with a full day of sunshine they put together the second-biggest limit of the week.
“It didn’t come easy at first,” Kelley said. “We had to change up and fish slower with a worm until we solidified our limit.”
“We’ve been getting plenty of bites,” McQuaide said. “Today we got the right bites, and we have to hope to hook into a giant tomorrow.”
Slowing down paid off for Kelley and McQuaide, but they also found a “magic tree” that they relied on for a lot of their success on Friday.
“We found this tree, and we caught four fish off it,” Kelley said. “Three of those fish were our biggest today.”
They passed their teammates John Duarte and Chesley Alford who were the Day 1 leaders. They now go from the hunted to the hunters as they dropped to third. The duo caught 10-2 on Friday, but feel like they are dwindling their population of fish and they aren’t reloading, so they plan to make a big change in areas for Saturday’s final day.
The gap between the Top 3 and the rest of the field is significant as Armando Ortiz and Dylan McKee of Auburn University are in fourth place with 22-14, almost a full 3 pounds behind third place. Cody Stahl and Daniel Kennedy of the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia sit in fifth with 21-7.
The full field is now cut to the Top 20 and the surviving teams will fish one more day on Winyah Bay in hopes of jumping into the Top 13 to qualify for the National Championship, which will be held this summer and announced at a later date.
Jarrett Brown and Porter James of the University of Montevallo in Alabama are on the Top 13 bubble, and the bottom seven teams are within a pound and a half of the final qualifying spot so the final day should be interesting.
Takeoff will happen at 6:30 a.m. ET at the Carroll Ashmore Campbell Marine Complex, which is located at 101 River Walk Drive, Georgetown, S.C. 29440. Weigh-in will now shift to Downtown Georgetown and will be held at 729 Front St. Georgetown, S.C. at 3:30 p.m.
