Stuck in NW Ontario… Without a Paddle

(Movie Trailer)

Old Town, ME (December 14, 2016) – This past August, three anglers brainstormed an entirely new take on the Canadian fishing trip with the help of Nestor Falls Fly-In Outposts.

Old Town Predator PDL fishing kayaks were strapped to the floats of a de Havilland Canada DHC-3 Otter and flown back into the wilds of Northwest Ontario’s Sunset Country. The intrepid anglers followed, blood pumping to tap waters unexplored by kayak anglers.

The end result: muskies, big bass, multi-species mayhem, and the adventure of a lifetime.

Stuck in NW Ontario… without a paddle… not a problem!

Stay tuned for more! Full-length video to follow on Wednesday, December 21st!

FISHING LEAGUE WORLDWIDE AND THE BASS FEDERATION EXTEND PARTNERSHIP

FLW to Debut 24-event High School Fishing Open Series

[print_link]

MINNEAPOLIS (Dec. 14, 2016) – Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) and The Bass Federation (TBF) today announced a multi-year extension to their strategic partnership, bolstering the relationship between the world’s largest tournament-fishing organization and the nation’s oldest broad-based grassroots fishing, youth and conservation organization. Terms of the agreement were not released.

As part of the extended partnership FLW will undertake the largest expansion of the co-managed High School Fishing program since launching the state-championship series of High School Fishing events in partnership with TBF in 2011. The expansion includes facilitating a new series of 24 High School Fishing Open tournaments to complement the existing State Championships and High School Fishing World Finals coordinated by TBF. TBF will also debut two High School Fishing Challenge events to meet growing demand from the more than 15,000 young anglers that participated in the program in 2016. All told, students will now have 76 FLW and TBF High School Fishing events in which to compete in 2017.

“High School Fishing is the foundation on which our sport will continue to grow,” said FLW President of Operations Kathy Fennel. “With the continued erosion of traditional pathways into fishing, the industry is taking note of High School Fishing’s recruitment, retention and reactivation potential. All it takes is one visit to a High School Fishing tournament to see that FLW and TBF have tapped into something special that unites generations in a way our sport has never seen before.”

No changes will be made to the existing program for adult TBF anglers. Fourteen TBF anglers (seven boaters and seven co-anglers) will advance to the BFL All-American from the TBF National Championship. The TBF National Champion boater will also advance to the Forrest Wood Cup and continue to receive the life-changing “Living the Dream” package to fish the entire season as an FLW Tour pro using a TBF-wrapped Ranger boat and tow vehicle without paying a single entry fee. TBF members will also continue to receive priority entry into all FLW tournaments.

“TBF is proud to partner with FLW in providing the nation’s most extensive network of grass-roots fishing opportunities from our TBF junior program through high school and college to the TBF National Semi-Final Series for adult anglers and ultimately our ‘Living the Dream’ package on the FLW Tour,” said TBF President Robert Cartlidge. “No two organizations work more closely to provide more fishing opportunities for more anglers nationwide than FLW and TBF. We are proud of that tradition and what it means for future generations.”

Veteran Bass Fishing League (BFL) tournament director Dave Maxfield has been tapped to lead the new series of High School Fishing Opens as FLW High School Fishing tournament director. Working closely alongside Maxfield will be Scott Ellison, who has been promoted to FLW Youth Director and Promotion’s Manager.

Going forward, High School Fishing will operate on a school calendar with the National Championship being held in the summer in conjunction with the High School Fishing World Finals. The top 10 percent of teams in each State Championship, Challenge and Open will advance directly to the High School Fishing National Championship. The High School Fishing national champions will each receive a $5,000 college scholarship to the school of their choice.

All participants must be Student Angler Federation (SAF) members to participate. SAF membership includes both TBF and FLW membership plus a digital subscription to FLW Bass Fishing magazine, online training courses and more.

SAF members never pay an entry fee to participate in FLW or TBF High School Fishing tournaments and all clubs are covered by SAF insurance, which means there is no added expense for schools with sanctioned High School Fishing clubs.

Award Winning Trapper Hooks Arrive in Time for the Holidays

[print_link]
Palm Beach Gardens, FL (December 13, 2016) – Following back-to-back Best in Show awards in terminal tackle at ICAST and the Pitman Creek Fall Dealer Show, the anticipated Trapper Hooks are now available at designated sporting goods retailers across the U.S. and Canada.

Co-Founder, Larry Davidson, conceived the “Trap” in Trapper Hooks which features a box shaped design at the base of the J-curve that keeps soft plastics and live or dead bait locked in place to improve their natural presentation.  “Without a doubt it improved lure and bait presentation, but when we realized how many more fish we were hooking and boating, we knew this was a superior hook design.  Anglers of all experience levels can significantly increase their catch with Trapper Hooks.”

trapper-hooks

Former Bassmaster ELITE Series Angler, Vince Hurtado, has extensive experience with the power of Trapper Hooks.  “The big difference I notice when using Trappers is the hookset. The immediate penetration of the Piercing Point, coupled with the way the unique Trapper box design locks fish on, means more fish are flopping on the scales at the end of my tournament day.”

Now anglers across North America can experience the Trapper advantage firsthand.  “It has been remarkable to see how positive every angler that has field tested our hooks has responded”, notes George Catuogno, CEO of Landum Outdoors.  “Every angler, bar none, that has fished our hooks has come back with great excitement and confirmation that we have a game-changer.  You couldn’t ask for better validation.  It’s exciting to finally see our Trappers available in stores.”

Simply stated, Trapper Hooks help you land more fish.   Offered in 5 different technique-specific styles and a wide array of sizes, the award-winning Trapper Hooks offer distinct advantages and are AVAILABLE IN STORES NOW!

Congress Approves Major Water Projects Bill – FTR Staff – December 12, 2016

Alexandria, VA –  Over the weekend, the U.S. Senate passed a comprehensive maritime infrastructure bill that drew a mixed reaction from the recreational fishing industry. By a 78-21 vote, the Senate passed the “Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation Act(WIIN),” which had been approved by the U.S. House of Representatives earlier last week. The WIIN Act now heads to the President’s desk for his signature.
The American Sportfishing Association (ASA), the trade association for the recreational fishing industry, supported many elements in the bill, including the Water Resources Development Act. From ASA’s perspective, the WIIN Act contains many positive, important authorizations ranging from habitat restoration projects to marine transportation infrastructure.images

Crankbait specialist Stephen Browning finds undying soulmate in St. Croix Legend Glass

[print_link]

Park Falls, WI (December 9, 2016) – He knew it on the first cast; no slick salesmanship required. This rod was clearly different than any glass he’d ever known. It palmed better. The balance was there. But it was the sensitivity that made this fiberglass casting rod so remarkable.

The “he” is Bassmaster Elite Pro Stephen Browning. The object of his affinity is the fresh new St. Croix Legend Glass.

Browning is cranky. Not in that unbearable old man sort of way, but rather a gifted artisan of hardbaits – crankbaits. He understands the aptitudes of how an anatomically accurate and conditions-specific crankbait can turn the head of even a comatose bass. And to mastermind crankbait fishing at this elite level demands a finely tuned tool.

“Crankbait fishing requires visualization,” Browning says of his ability to see through the sense of touch. “Your crankbait needs to tell you what it’s doing; if it’s on rocks, stumps, sand or mud. And because of the rod’s incredible sensitivity, Legend Glass can absolutely dial-in what type of structure you’re fishing.”

Now conventional thinking would say that if you bought – or better yet, received as a Christmas gift – a new Legend Glass, that it’d mope in the garage till spring. Not under Browning’s cranky watch… He considers crankbaiting a principle wintertime technique. “I fish crankbaits right through the 40-degree temperature range. Bass still react to crankbaits.”

Lately, Browning’s been getting intimately familiar with the 6’-10”, medium-power, moderate-action Legend Glass (LGC610MM). “This rod has it all. Ample backbone to drive hooks home. Enough forgiveness if the fish doesn’t inhale the bait. And the right amount of flex in the rod for fighting fish at short distances.

The overall balance is excellent, too. Perfect positioning of the handle and reel-seat. And balance equals sensitivity when it comes to crankbait fishing.”

Browning marries his Legend Glass to a larger baitcast reel spooled with 12 to 14-pound GAMMA fluorocarbon line. He ties direct, too, trusting his invincible Palomar Knot over a manufactured snap.

This brings us to the fishing tips portion of the program. Can’t go talking about an awesome fishing rod without suggesting how to use it.

So, with the cold weather months of December and January upon us, Browning offers up timely and proven crankbait patterns that you’ll enjoy even more so with a St. Croix Legend Glass in hand.

Lipless Crankbaits

Despite being typecast as a fast-flying lure that caters to hyperactive bass, Browning busts out lipless cranks in water temps even down into the 40’s. He keys on wind battered points and flats in 3- to 5-feet, knowing that consistent howls will bottle-up baitfish. Browning varies his retrieve, too, until the bass demonstrate a clear consensus. His top lipless contenders are the LIVETARGET Gold Shiner Rattlebait and Yearling Rattlebait 65 from the BaitBall Series.

Squarebill Crankbaits

Casting the same points and flats, particularly watchful of rock to gravel transitions, Browning unleashes squarebills as an alternative to lipless crankbaits. He’s able to fish them more slowly; that, and squarebills are less prone to becoming ornaments in flooded brush. Squarebills, says Browning, are especially effective in stained water. The LIVETARGET Threadfin Shad Squarebill is his chosen one.

Roundbill Crankbaits

If bass are operating in deeper water, say 6- to 10-feet, the ten time Bassmaster Classic qualifier relies on roundbill crankbaits, namely the LIVETARGET Threadfin Shad Crankbait and HFC (Hunts for Center) Crankbait. Generally, he finds roundbills to be more productive in clearer water.

Regardless of the style of crankbait in motion, Browning is chucking them with a St. Croix Legend Glass. New for 2017, the four-rod series is born from 68 years of American rod-building know-how and the very best materials and components available. Each rod delivers the full benefits of glass in its intended applications, plus the elevated feedback, increased strength, reduced weight and heightened manufacturing quality that are absent in the marketplace.

Legend Glass Casting Rods feature premium, linear S-Glass blanks built on St. Croix-exclusive Integrated Poly Curve (IPC)-engineered mandrels. Designed to eliminate all transitional points in the rod blank, IPC rods feature smoother actions, increased strength and greater sensitivity, while 100% linear S-glass is also stronger, lighter, higher in modulus and more dynamic than traditional, woven E-glass. The end result is the finest, high-performance fiberglass rod blanks ever created.

Proof that St. Croix’s new Legend Glass casting rods are worthy of their name; each model is expertly outfitted with top-shelf, task-minded components.

Fuji® K Series Concept Tangle Free guides with Alconite rings and polished frames are ideal for super braid, mono and fluorocarbon lines. The sloped frames and rings on these premium guides work to effectively shed line tangles before they can cause problems. A Kigan hook-keeper keeps things tidy, while two coats of Flex Coat slow-cure finish protect all meticulously-administered thread wraps.

Cranking is tough business. Legend Glass Casting Rods are designed to minimize wrist and hand fatigue over extended fishing sessions, courtesy of split-grip, super-grade cork handles and angler-favorite Fuji® ECS reel seats with frosted silver hoods.

St. Croix Legend Glass Models:

Model LGC610MM: 6’-10” length, medium-power, moderate-action. Ideal for making shorter, precise casts with smaller, lighter crankbaits.

Model LGC72MM: 7’-2” length, medium-power, moderate-action. Highly versatile model built to handle a wide variety of crankbaits.

Model LGC74MHM: 7’-4” length, medium-heavy power, moderate-action. Ideal for use with larger, deep-running crankbaits, including lipless lures.

Model LGC711HM: 7’-11” length, heavy power, moderate action. Ideal for the largest, deepest-diving lures. A special feature of the 7′ 11′ is the palming reel seat, which provides absolute comfort and minimized hand fatigue when fishing deep-diving crankbaits.

Special Christmas gifts for the most loved of love ones; from generous rich uncles

Sometimes, gift-giving is a no messin’ around situation. Not a half dozen poorly wrapped trinkets that engender a volume proposition, but rather something substantial. That one…big…thing.

So, if you want to blow the socks – and stockings hung by the chimney with care – off the angler in your world, think about putting one (or more) of these on Santa’s sleigh.

Have a very, very merry Christmas for under $600.

St. Croix Rod BASS X – Bass fisherman have been liberated, now able to cross the threshold into St. Croix ownership for around a hundred bucks – and a little something for the taxman, of course. (Rich uncle not required.) Not lost in the value-proposition, though, is the supreme technology and performance imbued in every model. BASS X combines St. Croix’s legendary, handcrafted quality with top-flight componentry. The magic begins with St. Croix’s proven SCII graphite blank, which gets two baths of Flex Coat finish to add durability. Hard aluminum-oxide guides line the train from stripper guide to tip. This lightweight, compact bass fishing reel has some serious shoulders to it. Whether you’re finesse fishing or power fishing, its performance exceeds expectations.

I’ve tested several of the new, ultra-low profile bass fishing reels on the market and although they feel great in my hands, many of them have lacked the power I’d expect for such a lofty price tag. I’ve even had a few become inoperable after just a few months of heavy use.

With those experiences in mind, I spent a long time testing the Abu Garcia REVO ALX. I wanted to look beyond the sleek exterior and, for lack of a better term, put it through some abuse. After countless casts and lots of hooksets, I think this reel has some really nice features and plenty of backbone for handling big fish in demanding situations.

Below are my full thoughts on it.
