LEXINGTON’S MIXON WINS FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE NORTH CAROLINA DIVISION FINALE ON HIGH ROCK LAKE

LEXINGTON’S MIXON WINS FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE NORTH CAROLINA DIVISION FINALE ON HIGH ROCK LAKE

Kraft wins co-angler title

SALISBURY, N.C. (Oct. 3, 2016) – Robert Mixon of Lexington, North Carolina, weighed in a two-day cumulative total of 10 bass totaling 33 pounds, 14 ounces, to win the FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) North Carolina Division Super Tournament on High Rock Lake. Mixon took home $7,316 for his efforts.

“I started out throwing crankbaits along rocky banks Saturday but couldn’t get a bite,” said Mixon, who logged his first win in BFL competition. “I arrived at a pier and decided to run a black Zoom Magnum Trick Worm. I caught a 5-pound bass at the first pier, and a 4-pounder from the second.

“By 11 a.m., the pier bite had slowed down, so I went out to some main-lake points in about 8 to 9 feet of water,” Mixon continued. “I used a green-pumpkin Trick Worm and hit about a dozen different points. I was able to catch three more keepers, including another 5-pounder. Those five bites were the only bites I had all day.”

On Sunday, Mixon said he returned to the piers and caught three keepers on the green-pumpkin Trick Worm. Around noon, he headed back out to the main-lake points to round out his limit.

“My last bite was at 1 p.m., and I brought in what I had,” said Mixon. “They weren’t as big as they were Saturday, but my spots still produced.”

The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 120 tournaments throughout the season, five in each division. The top 50 boaters and co-anglers from each division qualify for a regional tournament and are competing to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American. The 2017 BFL All-American will be held May 31-June 3 on Pickwick Lake in Florence, Alabama. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the Costa FLW Series or even the Walmart FLW Tour.

Bass Pro Shops announced today that it will acquire competitor Cabela’s for $5.5 Billion.  The deal has been long-rumored to be true, and today it was completed. According to the press release below, the two brands will continue to coexist along side each other, and Bass Pro Shops is committed to “celebrate and grow” the Cabela’s brand.  Bass Pro Shops has 99 stores, and Cabela’s has 85. The companies expect the deal to be finalized in early 2017. Read the full press release below.

Springfield, Mo. and Sidney, Neb. – October 3, 2016 – Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s Incorporated (NYSE:CAB), two iconic American outdoor companies with similar humble origins, and with a shared goal to better serve those who love the outdoors, today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Bass Pro Shops will acquire Cabela’s for $65.50 per share in cash, representing an aggregate transaction value of approximately $5.5 billion.

In addition, upon closing Bass Pro Shops will commence a multi-year partnership agreement with Capital One, National Association, a wholly-owned national banking subsidiary of Capital One Financial Corporation (NYSE: COF), under which Capital One will originate and service the Cabela’s CLUB, Cabela’s co-branded credit card, and Bass Pro Shops will maintain a seamless integration between the credit card program and the combined companies’ retail operations and deep customer relationships. All Cabela’s CLUB points and Bass Pro Shops Outdoor Rewards points will be unaffected by the transactions and customers can continue to use their credit cards as they were prior to the transaction. Capital One intends to continue to operate the Cabela’s CLUB servicing center in Lincoln, Nebraska.

A driving force behind this agreement is the highly complementary business philosophies, product offerings, expertise and geographic footprints of the two businesses. The essence of both Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s is a deep passion to serve outdoor enthusiasts and support conservation. The combination brings together three of the nation’s premier sporting brands: Cabela’s, a leader in hunting; Bass Pro Shops, a leader in fishing; and White River Marine Group, a worldwide leader in boating, which is part of Bass Pro Shops.

Bass Pro Shops, Cabela’s and White River Marine Group represent the best of American entrepreneurship, innovation and devotion to customers. The combined companies will strive to provide a remarkably enhanced experience for customers, increased opportunities for team members and greater support for conservation activities.

CABELA’S

Founded in 1961 by Dick, Mary and Jim Cabela, Cabela’s is a highly respected marketer of hunting, fishing, camping, shooting sports and related outdoor merchandise. Today, Cabela’s has over 19,000 “outfitters” operating 85 specialty retail stores, primarily in the western U.S. and Canada. Cabela’s stores, catalog business and e-commerce operations will blend seamlessly with Bass Pro Shops and White River Marine Group. Over the past 55 years Cabela’s has built a passionate and loyal base of millions of enthusiasts who shop both at its retail stores and online.

BASS PRO SHOPS

Bass Pro Shops, founded in 1972 by avid young angler Johnny Morris, is a leading national retailer of outdoor gear and apparel, with 99 stores and Tracker Marine Centers located primarily in the eastern part of the U.S. and Canada. Morris started the business with eight square feet of space in the back of his father’s liquor store in Springfield, Mo., the company’s sole location for the first 13 years of business. Johnny’s passion for the outdoors and his feel for the products and shopping experiences desired by outdoor enthusiasts helped transform the industry. Bass Pro Shops, which employs approximately 20,000 team members, has been named by Forbes as one of “America’s Best Employers.” The company also operates Big Cedar Lodge, America’s Premier Wilderness Resort, welcoming more than one million guests annually to Missouri’s Ozark Mountains.

WHITE RIVER MARINE GROUP

In 1978, Morris revolutionized the marine industry when he introduced the world’s first professionally rigged and nationally marketed boat, motor and trailer packages. Tracker quickly became and has remained the number one selling fishing boat brand in America for the last 37 years running. White River Marine Group offers an unsurpassed collection of industry-leading brands including Tracker Boats, Sun Tracker, Nitro, Tahoe, Regency, Mako, Ranger, Triton and Stratos.

MANAGEMENT COMMENTARY

“Today’s announcement marks an exceptional opportunity to bring together three special companies with an abiding love for the outdoors and a passion for serving sportsmen and sportswomen,” said Johnny Morris, founder and CEO of Bass Pro Shops. “The story of each of these companies could only have happened in America, made possible by our uniquely American free enterprise system. We have enormous admiration for Cabela’s, its founders and outfitters, and its loyal base of customers. We look forward to continuing to celebrate and grow the Cabela’s brand alongside Bass Pro Shops and White River as one unified outdoor family.”

“Cabela’s is pleased to have found the ideal partner in Bass Pro Shops,” said Tommy Millner, Cabela’s Chief Executive Officer. “Having undertaken a thorough strategic review, during which we assessed a wide variety of options to maximize value, the Board unanimously concluded that this combination with Bass Pro Shops is the best path forward for Cabela’s, its shareholders, outfitters and customers. In addition to providing significant immediate value to our shareholders, this partnership provides a unique platform from which our brand will be extremely well positioned to continue to serve outdoor enthusiasts worldwide for generations to come.”

“This opportunity would not be possible without the contributions of the many wonderful Cabela’s, Bass Pro Shops and White River team members,” Morris said. “All three companies are blessed to have been built by the extraordinary efforts of many tremendously talented, dedicated people throughout our respective histories, and we’re thrilled to consider what the combined team can achieve going forward.”

Following the closing of the transaction, Bass Pro Shops intends to celebrate and grow the Cabela’s brand and will build on qualities that respective customers love most about Cabela’s and Bass Pro Shops. In addition, Bass Pro Shops recognizes the strength of Cabela’s CLUB Loyalty program and intends to honor Cabela’s customer rewards and sees potential over time to expand the program in the combined company.

Bass Pro Shops appreciates and understands the deep ties between Cabela’s and the community of Sidney, Nebraska.  Dick, Mary and Jim Cabela founded their company in Sidney in 1961, and the company has flourished with its base of operations there ever since.  Bass Pro Shops intends to continue to maintain important bases of operations in Sidney and Lincoln and hopes to continue the very favorable connections to those communities and the Cabela’s team members residing there.

Bass Pro Shops Founder and CEO Johnny Morris will continue as CEO and majority shareholder of the new entity, which will remain a private company with a continuing long-term view of supporting the industry and conservation. In 2015, the same organization named him as one of 25 People Shaping the Future of Retail in America. In 2012, The Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies named Morris Citizen Conservationist of the Year.

“Conservation is at the heart and soul of Bass Pro Shops. Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s share a steadfast belief that the future of our industry, and the outdoor sports we all love, depends – more than anything else – on how we manage our natural resources,” said Morris. “By combining our efforts, we can have a profound positive impact on the conservation challenges of our day and help foster the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts.”

GET READY FOR THE FALL FISHING BONANZA!!!!!!!!!
October is the month of change around lake Anna. Archery season begins on October 1, what does that have to do with fishing you ask? Well simply put, it means less fishing pressure on the lake. The leaves begin to change colors and the fish get very active. The water temperatures begin a steady fall, the bait fish begin to push into the backs of creeks and the bass and striper alike follow them. The crappie will move to their fall feeding areas. It is just a great time to be on the lake.

BASS- Start looking for the bass to be shallow and very active all month long. You can catch them on a variety of baits in super shallow water. Squarebill crankbaits, Rat L Traps, Dave’s Tournament Tackle Tiger Shad Spinnerbaits, Damiki MTB Noisy Buzzbaits, Damiki D Pop and Don Iovino Splash It Poppers, Paycheck Baits Repoman, Late Payment and Damiki Rambler Walking baits and my favorite, Damiki Armor Shad Soft Jerkbaits. As always, Shakey Head Plastics will also catch their fair share of fish. Start looking in the back third of all major creeks throughout the lake.
They will be on laydowns, willow grass, rocks and boatdocks. Look for rocky points with deep water near by, same for boat docks. The deep water will come into play when a cold front comes through. With water temps dropping, they will be feeding heavy for thew cold winter months to come.

STRIPER- The linesides will start to make their move up into the rivers early this month. Look for them to be chasing shad and herring early and late in the day. A 4″ paddle tail swimbait rigged on a 1/4oz jig head is my bait of choice. Start looking for birds to give locations of the fish away. Be respectful of other anglers already fishing in an area, do not run all the way into them with the big engine, this will spook the fish and then you will be dealing with an angry angler!!! Once the heavy feed has ceased, locate them on your electronics and drop a Toothache Spoon down to them.

Towards the end of the month, you should be able to find them around the bridge in Terrys Run, the S-Turns to Little Florida in Pamunkey and around the 522 Bridge to the mouth of Goldmine Creek over on the North Anna arm of the lake. They should stay put in these areas all the way through November or until the water cools down to below 40 degrees or so.

CRAPPIE- The Specks will still be located on bridge pilings, deep boat docks (12-20 feet) and rock piles early in the month. As the water temps drop into the upper 60’s, look for them to make a move to shallow feeding ( 3-8 feet) areas up lake. Try skipping a 2″ Curly Tail Grub on a 1/16oz jig head under boat docks in the upper North Anna arm, same with Pamunkey and Terrys Run. Small minnows rigged on slip bobbers will also produce the best eating fish in the lake.

Lake Level-  FULL POOL

Up Lake- Stained
Mid Lake- Clear
Down Lake- Clear

Up Lake- 70-74
Mid Lake- 72-78
Down Lake- 73-79

WEST VIRGINIA’S DAVIDSON WINS FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE REGIONAL TOURNAMENT ON LAKE CHICKAMAUGA PRESENTED BY MERCURY

WEST VIRGINIA’S DAVIDSON WINS FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE REGIONAL TOURNAMENT ON LAKE CHICKAMAUGA PRESENTED BY MERCURY

Terry wins co-angler title

[print_link]

DAYTON, Tenn. (Oct. 3, 2016) – Ryan Davidson of Branchland, West Virginia, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 14 pounds, 5 ounces, Saturday to win the FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Regional event on Lake Chickamauga presented by Mercury, with a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 46 pounds, 14 ounces. For his win, Davidson earned $65,200, including a new Ranger Z518C boat with a 200-horsepower Mercury outboard, and a berth into the 2017 BFL All-American Championship.

“This week I fished all the way from Soddy Creek south to the Chickamauga Dam,” said Davidson, who notched his first win in FLW competition. “I ran through a lot of areas and burned a lot of gas. The fish were in transition, so I had to keep covering water.”

Davidson said he caught the majority of his bass flipping a black and blue-colored Yum Bad Mamma to submerged hydrilla.

“I was targeting stuff that I thought the fish would be staging in,” said Davidson. “On Day One I got a lot of bites and caught them quick, but that pattern kind of fizzled out. On Day Two, I ran the same type of areas and couldn’t get bit.”

Davidson said he adjusted by moving in closer to the bank. He said he ended up with six keepers on Day Two.

“Even though I was flipping, I moved fast,” said Davidson. “I was just hitting as many clumps of grass as I could with the trolling motor on high. I’d flip the Bad Mamma in there, hop it one time and if I didn’t get bite I was on to the next clump. Every fish I caught that was over 2½ pounds bit before the lure got to the bottom.”

On the final day of the event, Davidson said he decided to switch patterns and caught two keepers on a black Booyah Poppin’ Pad Crasher Frog. He returned to flipping later in the day and capped off his limit.

“I fished clean all week, and that made the difference,” said Davidson. “When they bite in these challenging tournaments, you have to put them in the boat.”

ALABAMA’S NICHOLS WINS FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE MISSISSIPPI DIVISION FINALE ON PICKWICK LAKE

ALABAMA’S NICHOLS WINS FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE MISSISSIPPI DIVISION FINALE ON PICKWICK LAKE

Mayo wins co-angler title

[print_link]

IUKA, Miss. (Oct. 3, 2016) – Cody Nichols of Fayette, Alabama, weighed in a two-day cumulative total of nine bass weighing 27 pounds, 14 ounces, to win the FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Mississippi Division Super Tournament on Pickwick Lake Sunday.. For his win, Nichols pocketed $7,883.

Nichols said he spent the tournament fishing grass on the north end of the lake.

“I had two main areas that I caught my fish from – a 50- and 200-yard stretch of mats,” said Nichols, who earned his first win BFL competition. “I mainly used a 6-inch Basstrix Paddle Tail Swimbait along the edges in 4 to 5 feet of water. I also weighed in one keeper Saturday punching a green-pumpkin Strike King Twin Tail Menace Grub.”

On Day One, Nichols caught the heaviest bass of the event – a 6-pound, 6-ouncer – off of the swimbait.

“I went outside of where I was catching them because I wanted to leave them alone for Sunday,” said Nichols. “I went down the mat, threw the Paddle Tail and caught it.”

Nichols said he returned to his two main stretches on Day Two, but only was able to catch four keepers – a far cry from the 40 he boated on Day One.

“I don’t know why there was such a drop off in the bites,” said Nichols. “I weighed in one on the Grub and the other three on the Paddle Tail. I didn’t think I had enough to win, but I got pretty lucky.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Cody Nichols, Fayette, Ala., nine bass, 27-14, $7,883

2nd:         Cameron Gautney, Muscle Shoals, Ala., 10 bass, 27-9, $3,436

OKLAHOMA’S FULPS WINS COSTA FLW SERIES SOUTHWESTERN DIVISION FINALE ON FORT GIBSON LAKE PRESENTED BY LOWRANCE

OKLAHOMA’S FULPS WINS COSTA FLW SERIES SOUTHWESTERN DIVISION FINALE ON FORT GIBSON LAKE PRESENTED BY LOWRANCE

[print_link]

WAGONER, Okla. (Oct. 1, 2016) – Derek Fulps of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, weighed in three bass totaling 11 pounds, 12 ounces, Saturday to win the Costa FLW Series Southwestern Division finale on Fort Gibson Lake presented by Lowrance with a three-day total of 13 bass weighing 45 pounds, 5 ounces. For his win, Fulps took home $78,500, including a new Ranger Z518 with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard.

On Thursday I started in the back of a feeder creek on the upper end of the lake and caught four keepers,” said Fulps, who earned his first career win in FLW competition. “I pitched and flipped a green-pumpkin-candy Gene Larew Hoodaddy to isolated wood and stumps, and casted a Hoodaddy Jr. that was the same color.

“Around 11 a.m., I headed to my sweet spot that I had found in practice,” Fulps continued. “It was a large submerged log that I came across after backing off the bank in the flat side of the river. I used the smaller lure – the Hoodaddy Jr. Downsizing my bait was the most important adjustment of the tournament for me.”

Fulps said he returned to the hole on Day Two and was able to piece together a limit fairly quick with the Hoodaddy Jr.

“I caught seven keepers and then left the area alone,” said Fulps. “Letting the fish replenish was crucial. It helped me get the win.”

On the final day of the event, Fulps said the morning bite was tough at his honey hole, so he returned to the feeder creek from Thursday. After a while he decided to give his sweet spot one more chance.

“I went back to the log and caught one that was nearly 6 pounds on the Hoodaddy Jr.,” said Fulps. “It was the biggest bass I caught all week. Without it, I wouldn’t have won.”

The top 10 pros on Fort Gibson Lake were:

2nd:         Kyle Cortiana, Broken Arrow, Okla., 15 bass, 43-4, $13,004

Jones Realizes Dream On Red River

[print_link]

BOSSIER CITY/SHREVEPORT, La. — Alton Jones Jr. came to the Red River this week feeling down. He left riding a high he couldn’t put into words.

The 24-year-old son of Bassmaster Elite Series veteran Alton Jones won the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open by catching the biggest bag of the three-day event during the 12-man finale Saturday.

With a five-bass limit weighing 13 pounds, 14 ounces on Saturday, Jones finished with 35-14. Todd Murray of Prairieville, La., finished second with 32-2.

“It’s kind of like I don’t know how I got here,” said Jones. “There’s nothing to say other than, wow.”

Jones was hoping to join his father on the Elite Series next year by finishing in the Top 5 of the point standings through the Northern Opens. But, he fell one point short on the final day at New York’s Lake Champlain last Friday, then made the 27-hour drive to the Red River.

“Last week was definitely gut-wrenching,” said Jones, who admitted shedding some tears after the last angler to weigh in bumped him out of the final Elite Series qualifying spot.

With a 15th-place finish in the first Central Open this season to go with his win Saturday, Jones will have a good chance to make the Elite Series through the Central Opens when the three-tournament series concludes later this month on the Atchafalaya Basin in Morgan City, La.

Even better, Jones earned a berth in the 2017 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro on Lake Conroe near Houston, Texas. The berth is contingent on him fishing the final Central Open.

His father, Alton Sr., has already qualified for the Classic through the Elite Series. Alton Sr. had to wait 26 years to fish a Classic in his home state of Texas.

“This is incredible to be going to my first Classic in my home state,” said Alton Jr., who, like his father, lives in Lorena, Texas. “Conroe is only about three hours from the house.”

Alton Sr. and his wife, Jimmy Sue, drove from Lorena to attend Saturday’s weigh-in.

“You always tend to think of your children as children,” said Alton Sr. “What I saw today was a mature young man I’m very proud of.”

Jones was in sixth place after the first day with 10-11. He caught only four keepers on Friday, but one of them was a 5-pound, 15-ounce largemouth that vaulted him into a first-place lead of 2 ounces going into the final day.

“Yesterday when I caught that big one, I felt it was just my time,” Jones said. “It just felt right. A fish like that doesn’t happen by chance after so many people had fished that area.”

Jones said the big fish came from a community hole that had a boat on it every other time he’d tried to fish it. He caught it on a Missile Baits D-Bomb in the California love color pattern with a 1/4-ounce weight.

“California love has a lot of red in it,” Jones said. “It’s just a real different color. I’m convinced that light weight was key too, because so many other people had fished there.”

Jones caught only five keepers on the first day, four the second, and then landed an estimated 20 keepers Saturday in culling up to 13-8. He used a 3/8th-ounce drop shot with a Robo Worm in the margarita mutilator color pattern to catch most of those fish Saturday.

Jones took the grand prize of a $45,000 Skeeter ZX200/Yamaha VF200LA rig and $7,595 in cash.

On Friday, Tommy Murray of Bedford, Texas, caught what would be the second-biggest bag of the tournament of 13-0, which included the Phoenix Boats Big Bass weighing 6 pounds, 2 ounces. It came on a Lucky Craft Rick Clunn 1.5 squarebill crankbait. Murray managed only 1-12 on the final day and dropped to 11th place.

Todd Murray moved up from fifth place to second on Saturday with a limit weighing 11-2. He said he caught 90 percent of his fish on a 3/8th-ounce white tandem willowleaf War Eagle spinnerbait around submerged laydowns.

Mike Pedroza of Sibley, La., finished third with 30-15, Billy McCaghren Jr. of Mayflower, Ark., was fourth with 29-7, and Darrell Lyons of Hemphill, Texas, was fifth with 28-15.

The co-angler division had its own special story. Marvin Delong of Colfax, La., took the first place prize of a Triton 179TrX/Mercury 115ELPT rig valued at $30,000. It was his first ever Bassmaster tournament.

“I’ve been a member of B.A.S.S. for a long time,” Delong said. “I decided I was just going to give it a try. It’s been an incredible experience.”

Delong said he caught all of his fish on a quarter-ounce Texas rigged plastic worm, and his bag included a solid 3-plus pound bass each day. With a three-bass co-angler limit every day, Delong finished with 20 pounds, 5 ounces. Charlie Hewitt of Prairieville, La., was second with 17-1. Quentin Cappo of Prairieville, La., was third with 15-13.

The Phoenix Boats Big Bass Award of $750 went to Tommy Murray of Bedford, Texas, with a 6-2 bass. Nathaniel “Rudy” Rudisill of Bossier City, La., weighed in a 4-13 to earn the Phoenix Boats Big Bass Award on the co-angler side worth $250.

Alton Jones Jr. also received the Livingston Lures Leader Award of $250 for finishing as the top pro on Day 2. Finishing as the Day 2 leader on the co-angler side, Marvin Delong of Colfax, La., received a Livingston Lures gift pack worth $250.

Skylar Hamilton of Dandridge, Tenn., earned the A.R.E. Top Angler Award of $500 for being the highest-finishing angler using A.R.E. products.

Alton Jones Jr. of Lorena, Texas, earned the Power-Pole Captain’s Cash award of $500.
