KERR LAKE SET TO HOST FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP PRESENTED BY EVINRUDE

[print_link]

HENDERSON, N.C. (Sept. 27, 2016) – The FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) is headed to Kerr Lake Oct. 6-8 for the second of six BFL regional championships. The three-day tournament, which is presented by Evinrude, will feature the top 50 boaters and 50 co-anglers from each of the Northeast, Savannah River, Shenandoah and Volunteer divisions.

The winning boater will receive a new Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower outboard and a check for $20,000, while the winning co-angler will receive a new Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower outboard. The top six boaters and co-anglers at each regional will advance to one of the longest-running championships in bass fishing – the BFL All-American.

“In the fall, the fishing on Kerr Lake depends on the water levels,” said Walmart FLW Tour pro Shane LeHew, of Mooresville, North Carolina. “I think we’ll see anglers using spinnerbaits, vibrating jigs and square-billed crankbaits to fish bushes up the river. If the water is lower, Carolina-rigged soft plastics on long points could be productive as well.

“Both Nutbush creeks and Grassy Creek are going to be popular in this event,” continued LeHew. “If there’s good grass, competitors will catch them on spinnerbaits, buzzbaits or a variety of Texas-rigged soft-plastics. A lipless crankbait may also come in handy. It all depends on the water levels.”

LeHew said that green-pumpkin-colored baits tend to do well in clearer water, while black and blue shades are preferable in more stained areas.

“White and chartreuse-colored vibrating jigs and spinnerbaits should be a good bet,” said LeHew. “There may be some baitfish in the backs of creeks, so colors like Sexy Shad will clean up.”

LeHew finished by estimating that a three-day catch totaling 46 pounds would be enough to win the tournament.

Anglers will take off from Nutbush North, located at 115 Jack Wade Farm Road in Henderson, at 7:30 a.m. EDT each day. Weigh-in each day will be held at the ramp beginning at 3:30 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

The BFL Regional Championship event on Kerr Lake is being hosted by the Vance County Department of Tourism.

The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 120 tournaments throughout the season, five in each division. The top 50 boaters and co-anglers from each division qualify for a regional tournament and are competing to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the Costa FLW Series or even the Walmart FLW Tour.

LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. (Sept. 27, 2016) – The Waunakee High School duo of Colin Steck and Nathan Lorenz from Waunakee, Wisconsin, brought four bass to the scale Saturday weighing 8 pounds, 12 ounces, to win the 2016 TBF/FLW High School Fishing Central Conference Championship tournament on the Ohio River in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. The win earned the team the title of Central Conference champions and advanced the team to the 2017 High School Fishing National championship, held next spring at a location yet to be announced in conjunction with the TBF National Championship and a Walmart FLW Tour event.

A field of 21 teams from 10 states qualified to compete in this conference championship.

The Waunakee High School duo landed the tournament big fish – a 5-pound, 4-ounce beauty – just 10 minutes into the start of

the event. Catching that fish set the stage for what they hoped would be a repeat win from last year’s Central Conference Championship at Lake Carlyle in Illinois.

“Catching that big fish right off the bat on a crankbait was a huge lift for us,” said Steck, a senior at Waunakee High School.

“We knew we had to grind it out and get more fish to go with him to give us a chance,” added Lorenz, also a senior at Waunakee High.

The pair was able to boat three more fish for a total weight of 8 pounds, 12 ounces, to secure their second straight Central Conference Championship as well as their second trip to the High School Fishing National Championship.

The top two teams on the Ohio River that advanced to the 2017 High School Fishing National Championship were:

1st:        Waunakee High School, Waunakee, Wis. – Colin Steck and Nate Lorenze, (four bass, 8-12)

2nd:      Lawrenceburg High School, Lawrenceburg, Ind. – Hunter Schneider and William Halbig, (five bass, 5-8)

Rounding out the top 10 teams were:

3rd:       Graham High School, St. Paris, Ohio – Rocky Jordan and Tanner Jordan, (four bass, 5-5)

4th:       Joliet Central High School, Joliet, Ill. – Sean Cook and Tommy Zobel, (three bass, 4-14)

5th:       Coshocton High School, Coshocton, Ohio – Tanner Ward and Ethan Woodie, (two bass, 3-7)

6th:       Union High School, Modoc, Ind. – Austin Tinsman and Evan Patterson, (two bass, 3-5)

7th:       Field High School, Mogadore, Ohio – Kody Whitaker and Abagail Shade, (two bass, 1-15)

8th:       Brainerd High School, Brainerd, Minn. – Austin Neyens and Tyler Bahr, (one bass, 1-13)

9th:       Brainerd High School, Brainerd, Minn. – Caleb Nagel and Ares Soukup, (one bass, 1-5)

10th:     Brainerd High School, Brainerd, Minn. – Kyle Bahr and Troy Peterson, (one bass, 1-4)

The 2016 TBF/FLW High School Fishing Central Conference Championship was a two-person (team) event for students in grades 7-12. The top 10 percent of each conference championship field will advance to the High School Fishing National Championship, coinciding with the TBF National Championship and an FLW Tour stop in the spring of 2017. The High School Fishing national champions will each receive a $5,000 college scholarship to the school of their choice.

Lew’s Signs with Major League Fishing – September 26,2016 FTR

Lew’s Signs with Major League Fishing

TULSA, Okla. – Major League Fishing (MLF) officials announce that Lew’s has signed on as a new sponsor of the popular made-for-television bass fishing competitions for the show’s 2017 season. Lew’s will showcase its rods, reels and fishing line through the advertising opportunities afforded, and also stands to benefit from having some of its national pro staff members among the anglers who have qualified to compete.

The Lew’s and MLF pairing brings together two of fishing’s hottest brands: Lew’s was honored in July with two “Best of Show” awards at the ICAST trade show, while MLF was rated Outdoor Channel’s overall No. 1 show for first quarter 2016.

The age discrepancy between the two brands makes the new relationship particularly interesting. Lew’s got its start in 1949. MLF is in its 5th season.

BRYAN COLLEGE WINS FLW COLLEGE FISHING SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE EVENT ON LAKE CHICKAMAUGA

BRYAN COLLEGE WINS FLW COLLEGE FISHING SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE EVENT ON LAKE CHICKAMAUGA

[print_link]

DAYTON, Tenn. (Sept. 24, 2016) – The Bryan College duo of Connor Cohran of Dalton, Georgia, and Cole Sands, of Calhoun, Tennessee, won the FLW College Fishing Southeastern Conference event at Lake Chickamauga Saturday with five bass weighing 16 pounds, 3 ounces. The victory earned the club $2,000 and qualified the team for the 2017 FLW College Fishing National Championship.

The duo narrowly edged out the 2015 FLW College Fishing National Champion squad of Patrick Walters and Gettys Brannon from the University of South Carolina, who weighed in a five-bass limit totaling 16 pounds, 2 ounces to finish in second place. A massive field of 203 college teams competed in the event.

“Today was so exciting,” said Cohran, a freshman majoring in Biology. “This was my first ever College Fishing tourney, and Cole really put us on some fish. The morning was a little better, but we caught around 35 fish today. We caught probably 25 of them on a green-pumpkin-colored MGC jig with a Strike King Rage Craw and the other 10 on swimbaits – a Strike King Shadalicious and a Gambler Big EZ.”

“Our school is about six blocks away from the lake, so I was able to practice here every day for the last month,” said Sands, a sophomore majoring in Business. “I think I fished every single grass mat on this lake. I figured out a pattern – the fish were not in the grass. They were right by it waiting to go in. It was almost like fishing offshore, but in grass.

“For a while this morning we were catching them on every single cast,” Sands continued. “Our most productive stretches were from Soddy Creek to Chester Frost.”

“We really have to credit our assistant coach at Bryan College, Coach Perron, as well,” Cohran said. “He let us borrow his boat – it was a little nicer and faster – and it definitely helped us get the win today.”

The top 10 teams that advanced to the 2017 College Fishing National Championship are:

1st:   Bryan College – Connor Cohnran, Dalton, Ga., and Cole Sands, Calhoun, Tenn., five bass, 16-3, $2,000

2nd:  University of South Carolina – Patrick Walters, Summerville, S.C., and Gettys Brannon, Gaffney, S.C., five bass, 16-2, $1,000

3rd:   University of North Alabama – Sloan Pennington, Childersburg, Ala., and Martin McCravy, Killen, Ala., five bass, 15-10, $500

4th:  University of Tennessee – Anthony Thorn, Knoxville, Tenn., and Scott Ellis, Madison, Tenn., five bass, 15-5, $500

5th:  University of Central Florida – Caleb Bundy, Lake City, Fla., and Jake Carter, Clermont, Fla., four bass, 15-5, $500

6th:  Middle Tennessee State University – Austin Wyatt, Gladeville, Tenn., and Mekiah Jack, Mount Juliet, Tenn., five bass, 14-14

SUMMERLIN WINS FLW BASS FISHING LEAGUE CHOO CHOO DIVISION FINALE ON LAKE GUNTERSVILLE PRESENTED BY POWER-POLE

Hill wins co-angler title

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (Sept. 26, 2016) – Local angler Gil Summerlin of Guntersville, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 17 pounds, 4 ounces, Sunday to win the FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Choo Choo Division Super Tournament on Lake Guntersville, with a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 38 pounds, 14 ounces. For his victory, Summerlin earned $8,234.

“I was on the lower end of the lake targeting two different shell beds that had a little depression in them,” said Summerlin, who earned his first win in FLW competition. “The areas were about five miles apart, but identical in terms of structure. The fish were set up on the bottom between 12 to 14 feet down.

“In the morning on Day One I used a Sexy Shad-colored Strike King 6XD crankbait and boated the largest bass of the event before 7 a.m.,” Summerlin continued. “After a while, I switched to a Mean Mouth Football-Head Jig rigged with a green-pumpkin Reaction Innovations soft-plastic. I dragged it slow, and then let it sit a minute. I caught seven keepers by 8 a.m. and was done.”

On Sunday, Summerlin said the lack of wind made for a tougher bite. He said he used the same lures as the day before to cap off the event.

“I rotated between the two beds and had a limit by 10 a.m.,” said Summerlin.  “I caught nine keepers, but spent most of the day going for a bigger bite.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Gil Summerlin, Guntersville, Ala., 10 bass, 38-14, $8,234

2nd:         Cody Harrison, Florence, Ala., 10 bass, 35-11, $3,375
