LA CROSSE, Wis. — Ott DeFoe maintained his lead for the third day in a row to earn his first career regular-season Bassmaster Elite Series victory at the Plano Bassmaster Elite at the Mississippi River presented by Favorite Fishing.
DeFoe, of Knoxville, Tenn., produced a five-bass limit that weighed 12 pounds and 1 ounce on Championship Sunday taking his four-day total to 63 pounds, 10 ounces. DeFoe’s performance barely ousted Minnesota native Seth Feider who weighed in 13-8 for a total of 62-7, which was good enough for a second-place finish.
DeFoe’s victory earned him a $100,000 paycheck and a title that he has been striving for since his rookie season in 2011 — the same season the now 31-year-old pro was crowned Bassmaster Elite Series Rookie of the Year.
“I’ve done well in La Crosse before,” DeFoe said. “It’s an amazing fishery, and I feel very comfortable fishing here. I felt that I located the right fish during practice that might keep me competitive during each day of competition, and I’m thankful the pattern held up.
“It’s hard for me to put into words what winning this tournament means. To beat 106 of the world’s best bass fisherman is something that I don’t take lightly, and it’s something me and my family are very proud of,” he said.
DeFoe spent the entire tournament fishing Pool 8 of the Upper Mississippi River. He started his mornings in front of a low-head dam/spillway where Pool 7 slowly dumped into Pool 8 that created a turbulent flow, which attracted baitfish and bass alike.
“The spot is no secret. In fact, I had several other anglers fishing it with me,” the five-time Bassmaster Classic qualifier explained. “But that didn’t bother me because I knew I was fishing it differently than they were, and I could still go behind them and keep catching fish.”
He caught his bass below the spillway on an unweighted swimbait that was retrieved at the speed of the current. He used a 7-foot Fenwick Elite Tech rod in a medium/heavy action matched with a 7.1:1 Pflueger Patriarch baitcasting reel loaded with 15-pound Berkley fluorocarbon.
The swimbait would tumble through the rapidly moving water, providing the feeding bass with a realistic meal that imitated a struggling or dying baitfish being washed downstream in the current.
During Friday’s competition, DeFoe caught the tournament’s Phoenix Boats Big Bass from that very location. The largemouth bass weighed 6-1 and earned the angler a $1,500 bonus.
“I fished that spillway for most of each morning,” he said. “Then I headed to the southern end of Pool 8 and fished in the grass flats near Stoddard, Wis. I worked a small area of matted grass with a punch rig to catch largemouth, and that spot helped me cull up my weight each day.”
DeFoe’s punch rig consisted of a 1 1/2-ounce tungsten flipping weight, a 4/0 VMC heavy duty flipping hook and a 4 1/2-inch black and blue creature bait. He had that rig set up on a 7-foot, 8-inch heavy action Fenwick World Class Rod paired with a Pflueger Patriarch in a 7.9:1 gear ratio that was loaded with 65-pound Trilene braided line.
The final event of the regular season will now give way to the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Championship to be held on Minnesota’s Mille Lacs Lake. The Top 50 in AOY points will advance to compete for a $1 million purse and berths to the 2017 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro.
Feider, of Bloomington, Minn., had a lot on the line coming into this tournament. He needed to finish in the Top 4 if he were to have a shot at fishing in the championship.
His come-from-behind performance not only earned him second place, but also locked in one more tournament appearance on his favorite lake, Mille Lacs.
“There have been many times over the past two years that I wondered if I was actually good enough to compete on this level,” Feider said. “I learned a lot about myself at this tournament, and a lot about tournament fishing in general — I’m very happy with my finish this week. You can bet that I’ll be fishing very differently from here on.”
Rounding out the Top 12: Alton Jones (61-14), Jordan Lee (61-8), Skeet Reese (58-5), Edwin Evers (58-0), Takahiro Omori (57-0), Mark Davis (54-14), Jared Lintner (54-9), Casey Ashley (54-1), Randy Howell (53-11) and Gerald Swindle (52-13).
After his sixth Top 12 finish of the season, Swindle of Guntersville, Ala., maintains the AOY lead, which is 43-points ahead of Keith Combs of Huntington, Texas.
Swindle was awarded $1,000 for leading the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year points race at the end of the event.
Jones earned the Power-Pole Captain’s Cash award of $1,000 for being the highest-placing angler who is registered and eligible and uses a client-approved product on his boat.
DeFoe earned the Livingston Lures Leader Award of $500 for leading on the second day.
Lee won the Toyota Bonus Bucks Award of $3,000 for being the highest-placing eligible entrant in the program. The second-highest-placing eligible entrant, Evers, received $2,000.
The Phoenix Boats Big Bass Award of $1,500 was presented to DeFoe for weighing in the overall biggest bass of the event — a 6-1 bass caught on Friday.
Jones earned the A.R.E. Top Angler Award of $1,000 for being the highest placing angler using A.R.E. products.
Dick Cepek Rolling Forward Award of $1,000 will be presented to the angler who makes the largest gain in Toyota Angler of the Year points from tournament to tournament.

Ott DeFoe Holds On As Third-Round Leader In Bassmaster Elite On The Mississippi River
[print_link]
LA CROSSE Wis. — Ott DeFoe widened his lead in the Plano Bassmaster Elite at the Mississippi River presented by Favorite Fishing today, if ever so slightly.
DeFoe of Knoxville, Tenn., weighed in 16 pounds, 7 ounces in the third round of the four-day Elite Series tournament for a total of 51 pounds, 9 ounces. That’s 2 1/2 pounds ahead of second-year Elite pro Seth Feider of Bloomington, Minn., who has 48-15. DeFoe had a 1-14 lead Friday.
That doesn’t sound like much of a margin, but in a fishery where big bass of the day is usually under 5 pounds and only ounces separate many of the positions in the standings, it will take a stumble by DeFoe and a stellar day for Feider. In fact, most of the difference between the two can be accounted for by the 6-pound, 1-ounce largemouth — a giant in this fishery — DeFoe caught at the end of the day Friday.
DeFoe only has two hot spots paying off with good-size bass, but they have been consistently reliable. Alternating between them, which requires a 20-mile boat run one-way, he has checked in limits weighing 17-7, 17-11 and 16-7. He said he’s using a swimbait with a treble hook rigged on it in his “starting place,” which features heavy current, and he’s flipping in his midday hole.
Jordan Lee of Grant, Ala, another young angler making a name for himself in the Elites, fell from second to third after turning in a smaller limit today, 14-10, than he did in earlier rounds. He is fishing floating frogs almost exclusively.
If anyone can catch DeFoe, Feider has demonstrated that he can. He bagged the heaviest limit of the tournament on Friday, 19-5, which moved him from 39th to third in the standings that day. A veteran of tournament fishing on other sections of the Upper Mississippi, Feider has more than a dozen fishing holes to choose from as the final round of fishing begins.
He described them as sandbars that would be out of the water if the river weren’t so high. Current is washing over them, and he’s catching big smallmouth with a combination of lures, including a drop shot, Carolina rig and swim jig.
Interestingly, fourth through seventh places are held by former GEICO Bassmaster Classic champions. They are Alton Jones, fourth with 46-15; Takahiro Omori, fifth with 45-5; Skeet Reese, sixth with 44-4; and Casey Ashley, seventh with 43-9. In fact, seven of the final 12 anglers fishing Sunday are Classic winners; Mark Davis, Edwin Evers and Randy Howell also made it.
Jones said he can’t wait to go fishing Sunday morning because awaiting him is the finest fishing hole he has ever found in 26 years as a B.A.S.S. pro. He found the spot during an Elite tournament in 2013 and, although he never had a bite there, he thought then that it should pay off in some situation.
It paid off in spades this week. Today, for example, he caught more than 50 bass, including five weighing 16-8, and quit at 12:45 p.m. so he could be assured of making it through navigation locks on time.
Gerald Swindle of Warrior, Ala., solidified his lead in the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year race by climbing into the Top 12. None of his closest competitors did so.
With all but a dozen anglers eliminated from the competition, the field for the upcoming Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Championship next week on Mille Lacs Lake, Minnesota, has mostly been set. The Top 50 in season-long AOY points will be competing on Mille Lacs for $1 million, which is apportioned according to AOY points standings at the end of the championship.
The final round on the Mississippi begins with takeoff Sunday from Veterans Freedom Park at 6:15 a.m. CT. The weigh-in will be held back at the park at 3:15 p.m. The Bassmaster Elite Series Expo and festival activities begin at 11 a.m. at Freedom Park.

Ott DeFoe Moves Into Lead in Bassmaster Elite At The Mississippi River
Ott DeFoe of Knoxville, Tenn., takes the lead on the second day of the Plano Bassmaster Elite at Mississippi River presented by Favorite Fishing, bringing a two-day total weight of 35 pounds, 2 ounces to the scales.

Ott DeFoe Moves Into Lead in Bassmaster Elite At The Mississippi River

LA CROSSE, Wis. — After claiming second with a 17-plus-pound limit of bass in the first round of the Plano Bassmaster Elite at the Mississippi River presented by Favorite Fishing Thursday, Knoxville, Tenn., angler Ott DeFoe predicted he would catch one more limit at least that big — and that would be it.
Today he backpedaled on the last part of that prediction, but he validated the first. His 17-pound, 11-ounce collection of five largemouth pushed his two-day total to 35-2 and a sizable (for this fishery), nearly 2-pound lead over his nearest competitor.
“Another catch like that one is possible, but I don’t think you can get more than that,” he said Thursday.
Today, after catching a 6-1 largemouth and four other heavy bass, all but one from one hot spot — under horrible fishing conditions — he changed his tune.
“After today, I know those fish are there,” DeFoe said. “I feel like it’s got more potential. They’re there.”
The big bass, currently leading for the Phoenix Boats Big Bass award, hit late in the day, with less than 30 minutes of fishing time remaining.
Jordan Lee of Grant, Ala., moved up a notch into second with a total of 33-4 after putting on a frog-fishing seminar for viewers of the Bassmaster LIVE program on Bassmaster.com. Lee caught bass after bass on the topwater baits early in the day, just before a broad band of severe thunderstorms settled on the Mississippi River valley. He sought cover under a picnic pavilion during the worst of the storm, and when the rain let up enough, he went right back to the spot and caught his biggest bass of the day, a 4-pounder.
Lee described the two places he’s fishing as small, maybe 50-yard stretches, as “perfect little spots.” He’s hoping they will hold up for two more days of competition, but he isn’t sure.
Seth Feider of Bloomington, Minn., rocketed into third with the heaviest limit of the day, 19-5. The young pro said the nasty weather today caused bigger bass to turn on for him, and he’s disappointed predictions are for more comfortable weather Saturday and Sunday.
He wants to win, of course, but perhaps more than that, Feider is hoping to qualify for the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Championship to be held next week on Mille Lacs Lake in his home state. He currently ranks 52nd in Angler of the Year points, two spots below the cut.
“I’ve got to make it past the turn,” he said. “I’ve got to make it to Mille Lacs. It’s the best lake in the world.”
Reigning GEICO Bassmaster Classic champion Edwin Evers of Talala, Okla., remained in fourth with 30-12, and Alton Jones of Lorena, Texas, another former Classic champion, is tied for fifth with David Mullins of Mound Carmel, Tenn., with 30-7.
The Top 50 competitors here will compete again Saturday, and the field will be cut to 12 for Championship Sunday. Among those eliminated from the Plano Bassmaster Elite today, some will drive a few hours to await the start of the $1 million Toyota Angler of the Year Championship at Onamia, Minn. Some on the bubble will have to wait around to see if they remain in the Top 50 in AOY rankings by the end of this week, and the remainder will be headed home, their season at an end.
The tournament will resume Saturday with takeoff from Veterans Freedom Park at 6:15 a.m. CT. The weigh-in will be held back at the park at 3:15 p.m. The Bassmaster Elite Series Expo will be open at 10:30 a.m. at Freedom Park.

Lightweight, breathable and 100% Weatherproof — Introducing the Challenger Jacket and Bib.
Lightweight, breathable and 100% Weatherproof — Introducing the Challenger Jacket and Bib.
[print_link]
Built from the DNA of Simms extremely popular ProDry™ Suit, Simms Challenger Jacket and Bib boast the same fit, function and ruggedness in an affordable $400 package.
Just like any piece of foul weather gear, the foundation of its weather defense begins with fabric. To achieve its best in class weather protection, the product team at Simms sourced an ultra-rugged, yet highly breathable 2-layer Toray® fabric. With fully taped seams in the jacket and bib, anglers can rest assure that when they’ve engaged all of the Challenger’s defense mechanisms, they will be 100% protected from whatever elements Mother Nature decides to throw at them. When the sky opens and the bite is on, a 3-point adjustable storm hood (stowable when not in use), oversized collar, external storm flaps and adjustable cuffs keep anglers in the moment without missing a beat or a bite.
Like the Pro Dry™, the Challenger Suit was designed to have a tailored fit that allows hours upon hours of unhindered casting and complete mobility from bow to stern. Anglers have the ability to customize the fit even further by fine tuning with a dual draw-cord adjustable bottom hem. Just like the Jacket, the Challenger Bib is constructed from the same breathable/rugged 2-Layer Toray® fabric, is fully taped and features a storm flap to reinforce weather protection over its YKK® Vislon Zipper.
In addition to being highly packable, the Jacket and Bib were designed to offer anglers easy/fast on off capabilities. With a slick interior liner, the jacket glides over layers with ease while the halfway zips in the leg portion of the bibs give anglers full weather coverage in a hurry.
In terms of storage, the Challenger Jacket features two fleece lined pockets to thaw frozen fingers, an internal stash pocket for smaller necessities and one large chest pocket perfect for stowing go-to gear that also has a built-in sunglass cleaning cloth. For other extras that need to be kept close at hand, the bib features a large thigh pocket equipped with built-in plier storage with a reinforced sheath.
From its weather protection to its rich feature set to packability to storage, the Challenger Jacket and Bib offer all the fishy features that serious anglers demand.

Former Classic Champion Casey Ashley Claims Early Lead In Bassmaster Elite
[print_link]
LA CROSSE, Wis. — Casey Ashley has only a slim lead following the first round of the Plano Bassmaster Elite at the Mississippi River presented by Favorite Fishing, yet he almost oozed confidence as he left the weigh-in stand today.
“I feel like I’ve got another shot at winning,” he said after weighing in a limit of four smallmouth and one largemouth weighing 17 pounds, 10 ounces. The Elite pro from Donalds, S.C., knows that feeling, having won the 2015 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro. He aims to add another $100,000 to his career total on the Mississippi River this week.
Nevermind that two other skilled young fishermen are breathing down his neck. Ott Defoe of Knoxville, Tenn., is second with 17-7, and Jordan Lee, the former College standout from Grant, Ala., is third with 17-2.
Reigning Classic champion Edwin Evers of Talala, Okla., is fourth with 16-13, and Brandon Card of Caryville, Tenn., rounds out the Top 5 with 16-9.
Card’s success may actually help Ashley’s dream of winning become reality.
DeFoe revealed that he has two great spots. One gave up three of the bass he weighed in today, and the other produced two.
They’re good enough holes to produce another remarkable catch, he said, but neither will hold up through the end of the tournament Sunday. That’s especially true because one of those two spots yielded most of Card’s fifth-place limit.
Card, who lives just 20 miles from DeFoe and has competed against him for years, said he saw DeFoe nearby when he found the place in practice. “I figured Ott would find it, too,” he said.
As Card arrived at the spot today, DeFoe was finishing up his limit. “He was smiling and I knew he caught them,” Card related. “I said, ‘Is there going to be a strategy we need to work out?’”
To his credit, DeFoe invited Card to finish out his limit there. Card said he expects the two friendly competitors will be able to work out a schedule to share the hole by the time round two begins Friday morning.
In contrast, Ashley said none of the 106 other Elite anglers is fishing anywhere near his areas. “I found it the first day of practice and went back to it this morning,” he said. “My first fish was a 4 1/2-pounder (a 4-7 that currently leads for the Phoenix Boats Big Bass Award), and I caught my limit there in about 20 minutes.”
He tried other, similar locations and caught good-size bass — 3- and 4-pounders — at most of them. After he had culled up to the 17-10 limit, he vacated the area and went scouting for more spots in another part of the river.
Lee, too, feels confident about his chances in this, the final regular-season tournament of the Bassmaster Elite Series. A second-year pro on the Elites, Lee did not have the benefit of two previous tournaments on the Upper Mississippi, and his practice fishing wasn’t especially good this week.
“The key was just being patient,” he discovered. “I caught four on four casts at about 10 o’clock in a place I thought I was only going to catch one, and they were all good fish. It told me to really slow it down. I did and hit a couple of little groups of fish and was able to cull up.” He found several other hot spots fitting his pattern, and he expects them to hold up in the later rounds.
For many of the Elite Series anglers in the field this week, the La Crosse Elite is their last chance to redeem their seasons. At the conclusion Sunday, the Top 50 in season-long Angler of the Year points will be invited to compete in the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Championship at Mille Lacs Lake, Minnesota, which begins next week. Those making that cut will divvy up the $1 million prize fund, $100,000 of which will go to the 2016 Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year.
The angler with the best chance of claiming that crown, Gerald Swindle of Warrior, Ala., helped his cause by climbing into 24th place today with 13-9.
The full field of 107 anglers will take off from Veterans Freedom Park in downtown La Crosse at 6:15 a.m. Friday, with the weigh-in taking place at the park at 3:15 p.m.

BOLT LOCKS RELEASES FIFTH WHEEL KING PIN LOCKING SYSTEM
BOLT LOCKS RELEASES FIFTH WHEEL KING PIN LOCKING SYSTEM
Works with BOLT 5/8” Receiver Lock To Provide Extra Security
[print_link]
MILWAUKEE – BOLT® Locks is unveiling a new Fifth Wheel King Pin Locking System, once again expanding its popular line of heavy-duty, weather resistant “Breakthrough One Key Lock Technology” offerings. The BOLT Fifth Wheel King Pin Locking System works in conjunction with BOLT’s 5/8” Receiver Lock, which is sold separately, to prevent fifth wheel trailer theft.
BOLT’s King Pin Locking System features a U-shaped black powder coated hardened steel collar that wraps around the Fifth Wheel King Pin and attaches to a BOLT 5/8” Receiver Lock to securely hold the fifth wheel in place in the bed of the pickup. Together, the system acts as a visible theft deterrent, allowing the trailer to be secured with the owner’s truck key. The new BOLT King Pin Locking System is ideal for protecting camping trailers, construction trailers and horse trailers.
BOLT’s 5/8” Receiver Lock is a stainless steel pin featuring a double ball bearing locking mechanism with a weather-resistant lock shutter to keep out dirt and moisture. Once the vehicle ignition key is inserted into the lock cylinder, spring-loaded plate tumblers move up and down until they are matched exactly to that key. The first time the key is rotated, the cylinder is uniquely coded to that key. Using just your ignition key — no matter how many BOLT locks are in play — helps reduce key ring clutter, thus reducing confusion on the road, and streamlining your towing experience.
“The Fifth Wheel King Pin Locking System was developed to expand the uses for our very popular 5/8” Receiver Lock,” said Erika Garcia, BOLT’s National Sales Manager. “Adding our new King Pin Locking System to our 5/8” Receiver Lock enables users to secure anything that is being towed with a Fifth Wheel type receiver, ramping up security for either work-related or recreational towing applications.”
BOLT Locks’ growing line of products includes cable locks, padlocks, receiver locks, coupler pin locks, toolbox latch retro-fit kits, and Jeep J-mount, spare tire and hood locks. BOLT Locks are available for Ford, GM, Chrysler, Nissan, Toyota and Jeep vehicles.
