GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. — Arkansas scored big as its team and home state angler Josh Ray took top honors at the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Central Regional presented by Magellan Outdoors.

Arkansas beat Indiana by a margin of 30 pounds to win state honors on Day 2. Today, Ray, of Alexander, Ark., won the individual tournament title with a three-day weight of 58 pounds, 8 ounces.

Mark Nies of Cannelton, Ind., finished second with 53-13 and Danny Grantham of Mobile, Ala., took third with 50-11. Matt Pangrac of Norman, Okla., was fourth with 50-11. Ted Heitschmidt of Tomahawk, Wis., was fifth with 50 pounds.

Those anglers also caught the heaviest individual weights for their states. Each top placing boater and non-boater advances to the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Championship presented by Magellan Outdoors. Date and location of the championship will be announced soon.

Ray focused on finding an obscure fishing area to avoid heavy fishing pressure and boat traffic from this and previous tournaments. The Arkansan found what he was looking for 45 minutes by boat from the weigh-in site at Guntersville Harbor.

He spent all three days in a creek near the river channel featuring deep water and aquatic vegetation. Depth and habitat are two key needs of largemouth bass migrating to and from their shallow spawning areas. Ray found ideal conditions in his area.

The creek channel held 8 feet of water with a grassy high spot in 2 feet near the shoreline.

Timing was also everything in his choice of areas.

“I caught prespawn, spawn and postspawn bass in there,” said Ray, a member of the Natural State Bass Club. “The water temperature was a few degrees cooler there, and that helped with the spawning activity.”

With an unpressured area and abundant bass activity he set out to catch enough weight to win top honors among competitors in his state. He was convinced of making the right move after the first hour on  Wednesday, the first day of competition.

Ray caught a small limit weighing 13 pounds, 7 ounces but decided the area held potential for his quest to win the title. Thursday, he caught a limit weighing 23-3 and realized the fishing spot had even greater potential. He returned today to seal the win with a five-bass limit of 21-14.

“I caught my limit all three days within an hour,” he said. “Nobody else was using my bait choice and that was another key.”

His choice was a 3/8-ounce Strike King Hack Attack Jig with a green pumpkin Zoom Z Craw trailer. He replaced the stock skirt with a white/chartreuse color to suit the dingy water conditions.

“There was current coming in off the main river channel that kept the water a bit muddy,” he added. “That also helped the bite.”

Lure presentation was another key. Ray discovered the actively feeding bass required a quick presentation with a typically slow-moving lure.

“I had to cast the lure into the grass and snap the rod tip,” he said. Strikes occurred as the jig came free from the strands of weeds.

Ryan Lavigne of Gonzales, La., won the non-boater division with a total weight of 31-1. Justin Harris of McPherson, Kan., took second place with 28-10, and Creighton Sawyer was third with 28-9.

Anglers earned these sponsorship contingency awards:

Livingston Lures Leader Award: Ray earned the $250 boater division bonus by leading the tournament on Day 2 with 36-10. Justin Harris won Livingston Lures merchandise for leading with 23-11.

Big Bass: Heitschmit caught a largemouth weighing 8 pounds, 8 ounces to win a $250 bonus for catching the boater big bass of the tournament. Non-boater Brandon Pickett caught a largemouth weighing 8-2 to win a $125 bonus.

A.R.E. Top Angler: Ray earned the $250 award as the top-finishing angler using the brand’s truck caps.

High School National Championship Returns To Kentucky Lake

The best high school anglers from across the country will compete on Kentucky Lake out of Paris, Tenn., for the 2016 Costa Bassmaster High School National Championship Aug. 4-6. The Junior Bassmaster Championship will also be held in conjunction with the high school championship Aug. 2-3, on Carroll County 1000 Acre Recreational Lake.

High School National Championship Returns To Kentucky Lake

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — B.A.S.S. has set the date for the third annual Costa Bassmaster High School National Championship, as well as the Junior Bassmaster Championship.

The 2016 Bassmaster High School Championship will return to Kentucky Lake out of Paris, Tenn., Aug. 4-6, in conjunction with the Junior Bassmaster Championship held on Carroll County 1000 Acre Recreational Lake, Aug. 2-3.

“Returning to Kentucky Lake for the third straight year was a very easy decision,” said Hank Weldon, B.A.S.S. High School Series tournament manager. “From the hosts, to the fishery and facilities, it is very hard to find a more ideal place than Paris and Huntingdon, Tenn.”

After the largest Bassmaster High School Open field in history — a total of 322 boats — weighed in on Lake Guntersville April 16, Weldon expects the championship to be even larger than it was in 2015. One place at the championship is made available for every 10 teams competing in the Opens.

The week’s events will be hosted by three organizations very familiar with tournament fishing — Carroll County, Paris-Henry County Alliance and Bethel University.

“After such successful past events, we are even more excited to once again be working with our great partners at B.A.S.S., Henry County Alliance and Bethel University to bring the 2016 Costa Bassmaster High School Championship back to North West Tennessee,” said Brad Hurley of Carroll County.

Festivities begin Monday at Bethel University with a kick-off dinner and guest speaker.

This is the third year in a row that the national championship will be held on Kentucky Lake.

“We are thrilled to host the Costa Bassmaster High School Championship at Paris Landing on beautiful Kentucky Lake,” said David Hamilton, CEO of the Henry County Alliance. “Kentucky Lake is one of the top lakes for bass fishing, and we’re proud to be able to showcase this fishery and what it has to offer the national championship contenders.”

The full field will compete on Days 1 and 2 with the weigh-ins at Paris Lake State Park, after which the field will be cut to the Top 12.

On Aug. 6, the Top 12 teams will compete on Kentucky Lake to crown the 2016 high school national champions. The final day championship weigh-in will be held in downtown Paris, Tenn.

The Junior Bassmaster Championship — a youth competition in its second year — will follow a team format. The event will be comprised of teams grades second through eighth from each state within the three B.A.S.S. Nation regions.

“In 2015, we launched a pilot Junior Championship that had 26 participating states,” said Weldon. “Continuing the championship this year, we expect this number to rise exponentially. The Carroll County 1000 Acre Recreational Lake is a perfect size lake packed with a bunch of bass for the Juniors to catch while maybe catching a lake record bass like we saw last year.”

Competitors will compete on Carroll County 1000 Acre Recreational Lake. The Junior Championship anglers will weigh their bass in downtown Huntingdon.

Arkansas Wins Team B.A.S.S. Nation Title On Lake Guntersville

[print_link]

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. — Arkansas scored a big win as its team overcame a 30-pound deficit to win the state bass fishing title on Lake Guntersville at the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Central Regional presented by Magellan Outdoors.

Arkansas’ 20 anglers collectively caught 363 pounds, 4 ounces to beat Day 1 leader Indiana by a margin of 33 pounds. The Hoosiers took second place with 330 pounds, 10 ounces. Wisconsin was third with 313-12 and Alabama weighed 304-6 for fourth place. Louisiana was fifth with 290-2.

“We fished individually to maintain the spirit of the competition but came together as a team when someone needed attention,” said Jim Alexander, Arkansas B.A.S.S. Nation president.

“We kept the competition between us and that made us fish stronger as a team,” added Doug Thompson, currently third place overall in the tournament. However, teammates did offer advice when their fellow anglers’ strategies were not working.

Arkansas won a Triton 189 TrX bass boat, trailer and accessories with a Yamaha VF150LA outboard valued at $37,293.

Nineteen states are competing in the regional tournament. On Day 3, the Top 38 anglers and three highest-ranking boaters and non-boaters from each state compete on Guntersville.

Josh Ray took the overall boater lead with the biggest catch thus far in the tournament. Ray’s five bass weighed 23-3 and put him in the lead by about 2 pounds.

“I caught all of them in about an hour and then left the spot,” said Ray, of Alexander, Ark. “I’m trying to save some for tomorrow.”

On Wednesday, Ray drew a late starting position, which cut into his fishing time. He managed a mediocre catch weighing 13-7, or about 9 pounds out of the lead. By the time he finished out his five-bass limit, it was nearly time to head to the weigh-in.

Today it was his turn to leave early, and that allowed him to arrive sooner in his fishing area. He caught another limit in about an hour.

“I’m trying to get away from the boat pressure,” he admitted. “I have other areas, but I haven’t needed to use those.”

Ray is swimming a leadhead jig on a tapering bottom near the river channel. That’s a common bass fishing strategy on Guntersville following the spawning cycle of largemouth. The bass are moving from shallow to deep water, where they will school along the Tennessee River over summer.

Ray is tapping into a migration route that funnels the bass along his chosen fishing area. While Ray disclosed the lure he understandably withheld other details of the presentation and specifics of the area.

To be determined is the overall winner and qualifiers to bass fishing’s world championship. That event is the Academy Sports + Outdoors B.A.S.S. Nation Championship presented by Magellan Outdoors. The top boater and non-boater from each state advances to bass club fishing’s championship competition.

The Livingston Lure Leader Award was presented to Ray. He earned the $250 bonus by leading the tournament on Day 2. Justin Harris, the leading non-boater also received a Livingston Lures merchandise package.

Harris, of McPherson, Kan., continues leading the non-boater division with 23 pounds, 11 ounces.

Big bass of the day honors go to Ted Heitschmidt of Tomahawk, Wis. He caught a largemouth weighing 8 pounds, 8 ounces.

The tournament begins at 6 a.m. CT with boats returning in staggered flight times beginning at 2:15 p.m. Tournament launch and weigh-in will be held at Guntersville City Harbor.

Late 6-Pounder Lifts Herren Into Lead In Two-Lake Arkansas Elite Series Event

Late 6-Pounder Lifts Herren Into Lead In Two-Lake Arkansas Elite Series Event

MOUNTAIN HOME, Ark. — Matt Herren came into this week’s Bassmaster Elite at Bull Shoals/Norfork, with a free-wheeling attitude.

“My motto for the week is just to fly by the seat of my pants,” Herren said. “Since we’re fishing two different lakes, I figure that’s all you can really do.”

So far, the strategy has worked very well.

Herren caught five bass Thursday on Norfork Lake that weighed 17 pounds and took the lead in the first-of-its-kind, two-lake Elite Series event. His catch was bolstered by a 6-pound, 1-ounce largemouth that bit during the final minutes.

In an unusual format, the 108 Bassmaster Elite Series anglers will divide their time between two nearby Ozarks lakes near Mountain Home. After competing today on Norfork, the full field moves to Bull Shoals for Friday’s round, after which the field is cut to 50 anglers, who will again compete on Bull Shoals. The Top 12 anglers after Saturday will return to Norfork for the final round.

Herren feels confident now as the tournament shifts to Bull Shoals Lake for the next two rounds before coming back for Championship Sunday on Norfork.

“I just had a really fortunate day,” Herren said. “I got on something early and had a good limit of fish. But with about 15 minutes left in my day, I caught a 6-1. It was kind of an out-of-the-blue fish, but I’ll take it.”

Herren was already off to a good start, with five bass that he estimated would have weighed about 14 pounds. But with the day winding down — and the next two rounds scheduled for a different lake 20 miles away — he desperately wanted to add a kicker fish.

So he decided to make a quick stop on the only place he’d seen a big bass in practice.

“I listened to that little voice that said, ‘Go do it,’” Herren joked. “I pulled in there, and it happened ‘bam’ — just that fast.”

The big fish helped Herren separate slightly from a Top 5 that includes Kentucky pro Mark Menendez with 16-12, Californian Chris Zaldain with 16-2, Alabamian Keith Poche with 15-13 and Florida pro Randall Tharp with 15-8.

Menendez said it was an early 4-pounder that sparked his good first round.

“I got a good bite this morning, and it slowed me down,” he said. “I just got really thorough in an area and managed to get three of those better-quality bites during the day.

“I caught a 4 1/4-pounder late in the day that culled a 2-pounder, and that helped a whole bunch.”

Although he said he’s all for fishing new venues, Menendez made it clear that he’s not a fan of the split format. He believes there will be an element of luck involved for whoever lands in the winner’s spot Sunday.

“I could find the winners on Norfork, not catch them at Bull Shoals, and fall completely out,” he said. “That’s an element we’ve never had to deal with.

“I’m looking at this as four separate tournaments. Each day is a one-day event, and I’m going to milk it for all it’s worth.”

On the flip side, Zaldain said the format really suits the “run-and-gun” style of fishing he prefers. He had no fear of pressuring the fish hard at Norfork on Day 1, knowing his best spots will have two days to rest before he returns.

“I fished all new water today and established a pattern with a bait I have a lot of confidence in,” Zaldain said. “It’s a winding-type bait, and I literally had a look at over 20 pounds today. I had a lot of big ones come up and push it out of the way.

“I’m really, really looking forward to getting back out there on Day 4 — hopefully.”

The tournament will continue Friday and Saturday, with take-offs at 6:15 a.m. CT from Bull Shoals Boat Dock. Sunday’s take-off will be at 6:15 a.m. from Lake Norfork Marina.

Daily weigh-ins will be held at 3:45 p.m. on the campus of Arkansas State University in Mountain Home.

MINNEAPOLIS (April 21, 2016) – Fishing League Worldwide (FLW), the world’s largest tournament-fishing organization, announced today a sponsorship agreement with Unilever to showcase the Lipton tea brand. The partnership will offer the world’s No. 1 tea brand the opportunity to directly connect with the millions of outdoor and fishing fanatics that FLW reaches through their tournaments and promotional platforms.

Lipton will receive exposure across multiple FLW’s platforms, including its tournaments and Expos, website, social media outlets and the Emmy-nominated “FLW” television show. “FLW” is broadcast in high-definition (HD) to more than 559 million households worldwide, making it the most widely distributed weekly outdoors-sports television show in the world.

FLW will also showcase Lipton at the National Fishing and Boating Expos being held at Walmart stores around the country, June 3-5. FLW and its partners will present a two-hour expo at local Walmart stores that will be packed with games, giveaways and fishing tips to help families make the most of their time on the water. A complete list of Walmart stores hosting National Fishing and Boating Week expos will be posted in May.

Since its founding in 1890, Lipton has offered an aromatic, uplifting beverage that is savored around the world, from India and Ireland to the U.S.A. Glasgow-born entrepreneur and innovator Sir Thomas Lipton envisioned an opportunity to make tea universally accessible with guaranteed quality at acceptable prices. He began by purchasing tea estates in Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, and arranged packaging and shipping at low costs to sell his teas directly from the tea garden to the tea pot. In 1893, he established the Thomas J Lipton Co., a tea packing company with its headquarters and factory in Hoboken, New Jersey.

Lipton is now the world’s leading tea brand, sold in more than 150 countries.

CEDAR LAKE MAN WINS $5,000 PLAYING FLW FANTASY FISHING

CEDAR LAKE MAN WINS $5,000 PLAYING FLW FANTASY FISHING

MINNEAPOLIS (April 21, 2016) – Donald Freundt of Cedar Lake, Indiana, correctly picked five of the top 10 finishers at last week’s Walmart Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) Tour event on Beaver Lake presented by Jack Link’s. For his picks, Freundt won $5,000 by playing FLW Fantasy Fishing, held in conjunction with the FLW Tour fishing tournament.

“I’ve been playing FLW Fantasy Fishing since it was launched in 1998,” said Freundt. “I’ve won smaller prizes in the past, but never thought I’d win this kind of money.”

Freundt said he primarily used the Member’s Advantage tools on the Fantasy Fishing website to conduct research for his team.

“In some cases I just went with guys who are having a good year – like Scott Martin,” said Freundt. “He’s a great angler and is consistently finishing high in the standings. For other selections, I used the search tool for local anglers. Sometimes I can find a great pick at a bargain price.”

Freundt said he is excited about his chances of winning the $10,000 grand prize, which awarded to the best Fantasy Fishing player in the world at the conclusion of the FLW Tour regular season.

“This finish definitely gave me a boost in the world standings,” said Freundt. “I think I’m sitting in 32nd overall, which is pretty amazing in itself.”

Finishing in second place was Curtis Wheeler of Indianapolis, who won $1,000, and in third place was Tommy Jarvis of Athens, Alabama, who won $500.

Several other winners from across the globe took home prizes including cash, ShopFLW gift cards, hats and baits.

The 2016 Fantasy Fishing season consists of seven tournaments surrounding the Walmart FLW Tour regular season as well as the season-ending Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of bass fishing. Fans compete for more than $7,000 in cash and prizes from each of the six tournaments and a top prize of $5,000. The cumulative grand prize for the highest ranked player at the end of the season is $10,000.

To begin playing, visit FantasyFishing.com and sign up. Select a team of 10 anglers against an allocated $200 salary cap and select your guess for the tournament winning weight as a tiebreaker. Create a league to play against your friends and compete for bragging rights. Player’s modifications to their teams must be finalized by 11:59 p.m. EST the night prior to the tournament.
