OVERVIEW- Fishing should be good this month! Water temperature will be in the 40’s to lower 50’s. Best times will be early morning, late afternoon and overcast days. Fishing the past few weeks has been fair! Try different fishing patterns. Most of the baitfish has moved toward the upper end of both rivers and the rear of the major creeks. The very unusually warm weather has caused fishing patterns to change. The water color and the debris make for a different type of fishing! Be aware of the floating debris!!!

Largemouth Bass- Fishing for largemouth bass will be good this month. Best lures will be jigs, drop shot rigs, spinner baits, Texas rigged plastic worms, deep diving crank baits, jerk baits and Alabama rigs. Most largemouth bass will be caught in creeks, rock piles, brush, humps creek channels and deep water docks. Best depths will be from the 2 to 35 feet deep. Largemouth bass will be in their winter patterns this month . Look for stained water and shad movements to help catch bass this month.

Smallmouth Bass- Fishing should be good. Best areas will be humps, ledges and main channel points. Best lures will be crank baits, tubes, jigs and spoons. Best areas will be in the mid to the lower sections of the lake. Most smallmouth bass will be suspended this month around schools of baitfish. Cloudy days with light winds are good times to try your luck! Look for areas with rocks!

Striped Bass- Fishing should be good this month. Stripers will be caught in the mid to upper sections of the lake and the large creeks. Best lures will be swim baits, Alabama rigs and Zoom flukes fished on 3/8 to 3/4 oz. lead heads. Casting to points early and late day can be productive. The best depths will be from the surface to 60 feet deep. Live bait fished on planner boards will work good this month. Most fish will be suspended and will constantly be on the move. Find the largest concentration of shad. Vertical jigging with spoons will work this month.

Crappie- Fishing for crappie will be fair this month. They will be found 10 to 20 ft. deep. Crappie will be suspended around docks, brush piles and fallen tree tops near creek channels. Small live minnows and 1½ to 2 inch tubes or shad shaped plastic lures fished on 1/16 to 1/8 oz. lead heads will work best to catch crappie this month.

TIP OF THE Month- Please be aware of the large amount of floating debris in the lake! It can cause damage to your boat and person! Wear your life jacket!!! Winter can be a great time to catch stripers, bass and crappie. Remember shad constantly move as the water temps fall. You can also hear reports about local fishing on the website: The Bass Cast Radio show each month. Make sure your running lights are on after dark! It is very important to wear your life jacket, especially during the cold months!. Remember to be courteous and obey all the boating laws. Take a kid fishing!

SPRO Little John XL Crankbait Review

Walker Smith

This oversized, shallow-running crankbait casts like a rocket, dives quickly and is ready to fish right out of the package.

Oversized crankbaits have definitely become a predominate trend in recent years. Even heavily pressured fish are totally unfamiliar with these lures, making them especially effective at catching big bass throughout much of the year.

My excitement for the SPRO Little John XL began the moment I heard grumblings about its development. Its primary designer, Elite Series pro John Crews is renowned for his cranking prowess, so I won’t lie—I had very high expectations.

After fishing with it for the past several months, I’ve learned a great deal about its applications that has added an extra dimension to my crankbait game.

Fitzgerald Rods Signs Bassmaster Elite Series Pro Cliff Prince

[print_link]

Belleview, FL – Building on a solid year at all levels, Fitzgerald Rods gains another Bassmaster Elite Series Angler, signing Pro Cliff Prince for the 2016 season. “I’m fishing against the best in the world – fishing the Elites”, says Prince, “and I think Fitzgerald has one of the best rods on the market. To fish against these guys (on the Elite Series), you have to be with the best, and putting a Lew’s reel on a Fitzgerald rod – I don’t see how I can get any better”.

The Palatka, FL Pro has been a staple of the Bassmaster Elite Series since 2012, qualifying for the Bassmaster Classic in 2013 and 2015. “I like to catch them however they are biting” Prince explains, “coming from the St. John’s river has made me pretty versatile. I’ve had to fish docks, shell bars, offshore, grass – the river is a versatile fishery, and that’s helped me be able to be as competitive as I have been on the Elites.”

2016 will see Cliff continue to compete on the Elite Series as well as the Bassmaster Southern Opens, where the versatility of the Fitzgerald Rods line will be a major asset. “When Fitzgerald signed Bryan Thrift, Bryan and Trevor (Fitzgerald) got together and designed some rods that fit Bryan, who is strong finesse fisherman” says Prince. “I already knew that Fitzgerald has some of the best Flippin’ sticks out there, and I know Bryan’s rods are some of the most versatile rods out there, so I just couldn’t go wrong”.

Fitzgerald Rods looks forward to Cliff utilizing Fitzgerald Rod’s versatile line up of rods to compete on the Bassmaster Elite Series in 2016.

BIG DEAL FOR BIG BAITS

AWARD-WINNING HYDRO-FLO DESIGN APPLIED TO HANGING BAIT STORAGE IN ALL-NEW PLANO M-SERIES HYDRO-FLO TACKLE BAG

Plano, IL (December 21, 2015) – In 2011, Plano’s original Guide Series 4674 Hydro-Flo™ Tackle Bag earned an ICAST “Best of Show” for an ingenious design that allowed water to flow right through the base of the bag, an industry first. Since then, the Hydro-Flo has become a favorite with anglers the world over.

For 2016, Plano’s angling engineers have applied their award-winning Hydro-Flo design to the all-new M-Series Hydro-Flo Tackle Bag, a beast of a bag with a manageable footprint and shockingly cavernous interior configured for space-saving storage of big baits via vertical hanging.

Muskie maniacs, swimbait specialists and saltwater jig junkies have had limited tackle storage options… Until now. The M-Series Hydro-Flo Tackle Bag stores up to 25 of their large lures in clever hanging bait compartments. Tie ‘em, fish ‘em, hang ‘em and rinse ‘em. The M-Series Hydro-Flo’s spacious main compartment keeps big baits organized, secure and dry, courtesy of a flow-through design and the reinforced namesake base.

This strikingly stately olive green and cerulean blue bag is big business on the outside, too, with a parade of plus-sized perimeter pockets that zip open and closed to secure all the tools, goods, gear and accessories any angler could need during a day on the water.

Plano Model No. 414300 M-Series Hydro-Flo™ Tackle Bag

  • Hydro-Flo base allows water to drain out bag’s bottom for drying or rinsing of lures
  • Cavernous interior with 25 hanging bait compartments to house your large lures
  • Exterior pockets to secure all your tools, accessories and gear in easily accessible locations
  • Holds 25 hanging compartments, plus one 3700 Series StowAway
  • Product size: 19”L x 13”W x 18”H

MSRP: Model 413900, $79.99

Thanks to Plano’s Hydro-Flo performance, you can now run your big, expensive baits hard and put ‘em away wet. They’ll dry fast inside the new M-Series Hydro-Flo Tackle Bag, one of four all-new high capacity M-Series designs – including 3600 and 3700 size M-Series Tackle Bags and an M-Series Messenger Bag – merging voluminous interiors with a sexy signature look. T-H Marine Expands ATLAS™ Awards – FLW

T-H Marine Expands ATLAS™ Awards

T-H Marine ATLAS Awards

T-H Marine Supplies, Inc., of Huntsville, Ala., is once again offering up the opportunity to join the Atlas Awards program for the 2016 tournament-fishing season. Through the program, anglers can get paid to do what they love by becoming a member of the program and using T-H Marine products.

Once an angler signs up to be a member, there are no additional hooks or catches to the Atlas Awards program. Members get benefits and opportunities right from the start. After sign-up, a member receives two Atlas Awards custom decals, one T-H Marine custom decal and information needed to outline eligibility for the $850 in contingency payouts at each sanctioned event.

“We are thrilled to be approaching the 2016 tournament-fishing season and opening up the availability for the next group of Atlas Awards members,” T-H Marine President and CEO Jeff Huntley says. “The Atlas Awards program provides a great way to reward our customers for being valuable representatives of our brand.”

For 2016, the payouts have also been restructured to give more opportunity to anglers fishing smaller tournaments. Payout information is available at this here, and applies to every tournament, regardless of size, as long as it meets the 50-boat minimum.

The Atlas Awards program is just $24.95 for a one-year (Jan. 1, 2016 – Dec. 31, 2016) membership and gives all anglers the chance to compete for, and win, extra money just for having T-H Marine parts on their boat. More information and the membership form can be found here.

Berhorst Wins Lew’s Speed Fishing AOY

Berhorst Wins Lew’s Speed Fishing AOY

Dennis Berhorst of Holts Summit, Missouri, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 21 pounds, 1 ounce Sunday to win the Walmart Bass Fishing League Ozark Division Super Tournament on Lake of the Ozarks with a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 39 pounds, 8 ounces. For his victory, Berhorst earned $8,349.

Lew’s Fishing announces that Missouri’s Dennis Berhorst is the first to win the company’s new Speed Fishing Angler of the Year title, and also that it will be offering the awards incentive program again for 2016.

Berhorst earned the inaugural distinction by accumulating the highest number of points through participation in 2015 FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) tournaments. The Holt Summit angler amassed 1,355 points competing in the league’s Ozark Division. The accomplishment earned him a $1,000 gift certificate redeemable for his choice of Lew’s rods, reels and accessories totaling that value.

Bryan Barnard from Harrison, Ark., finished second in the Lew’s AOY race with 1,320 points. He competed in the BFL Arkie Division. Barnard was awarded a Lew’s Speed Spool and Speed Stick baitcasting combo as runner-up.

Michael Smith of Piedmont, S.C., was third with 1,303 points from in the BFL South Carolina Division. He won a Speed Spool baitcasting reel as a consolation prize.

The membership-based Lew’s Speed Fishing Awards Incentive Program was launched in early 2015 as a way for participating anglers to earn rewards above and beyond the tournaments’ prizes. The popularity of the first-year program is responsible for Lew’s decision to continue it again in 2016.

The Lew’s Speed Fishing program applies to all BFL divisions and tournaments held across the United States. The program provides reward opportunities for the highest-finishing member in the top 20 of a BFL competition. To be eligible, anglers must be a 2016 Speed Fishing member and meet all program criteria, including ownership of Lew’s rods and reels manufactured since 2013. The $29.95 annual membership fee includes a Lew’s cap and decals.

Prize choices for Speed Fishing members who win a BFL tournament are $250 cash or a $500 Lew’s gift certificate. Otherwise, the highest-finishing member making any BFL top 20 has the choice of $125 cash or a $250 Lew’s gift certificate.

The program’s highest honor is the AOY title, which Berhorst won, and comes with the $1,000 gift certificate top prize.

Online enrollment for the 2016 Lew’s Speed Fishing Awards Incentive Program is open now at lews.com. Refer to the Angler Resources section and then click on Rewards Program. The information includes a full description of program rules and frequently asked questions.

Lew’s is an official sponsor of FLW.
