Chris Felty’s ‘Plan B’ brought smallmouth, largemouth, and lead

Chris Felty of Idaho leads on Day 1 of the 2014 B.A.S.S. Nation Western Divisional.

TROUT CREEK, Mont. — Chris Felty’s day didn’t go as planned, but he’s OK with that. The Idaho angler found his groove on Montana’s Noxon Reservoir and now leads on Day 1 of the 2014 B.A.S.S. Nation Western Divisional.
“This morning, I went to my No. 1 spot from practice,” said Felty of Caldwell, Idaho, “but all the good fish were gone. So I moved into current and just started looking for smallmouth.”
His Plan B paid off, and he brought in a bag of 13 pounds, 11 ounces, nearly a pound heavier than anyone else in the field.
“It was a grind to get my weight,” Felty said, but he managed it with a mixed bag of four smallmouth and one largemouth.
Felty has been a member of Boise Bass, an Idaho B.A.S.S. Nation club, for two years, and this is his first B.A.S.S. Nation divisional.

How to Choose Between Jigs and Texas Rigs for Bass Fishing by: Alan McGuckin

By the time the Bassmaster Elite Series event on Lake Dardanelle concludes, just about every one of the countless shallow water targets along this sprawling 34,000-surface acre portion of the Arkansas River will have had a jig or Texas rigged soft plastic lure pitched to it at some point. Choosing between bass fishing Texas rigs and jigs, however, is the tough part.

Hammack held tough on Kerr – May 17 Shenandoah Division – FLW Outdoors.com

Hammack held tough on Kerr

Shawn Hammack of Gasburg, Va., won the May 17 Shenandoah Division event on Kerr Lake with a 14-pound limit to cash a check worth over $5,100.
Lederman nets co-angler title
17.May.2014
HENDERSON, N.C. – Shawn Hammack of Gasburg, Va., weighed a five-bass limit totaling 14 pounds even Saturday to win the second Walmart Bass Fishing League Shenandoah Division tournament of 2014 on Kerr Lake. For his victory, Hammack earned $5,199.

“I started out my day by failing,” said Hammack, who earned his second BFL win. “I tried to fish the shad spawn. The shad were spawning really well, but I fished for an hour and a half and didn’t catch anything.

“So, I changed up and went to a bank where I knew some fish were guarding fry,” Hammack continued. “I caught one of them on a Rebel Pop-R and one on a white-colored Zoom Fluke. Then I caught one that was spawning on a tree and after that I flipped sweet gum trees with a watermelon-colored Zoom Lizard.

“The trees I was fishing were in 3 or 4 feet of water. These trees were up on dry land on Thursday, but the water was coming up so fast. Most of the bass would bite the lizard before it got to the bottom.

“Usually on Kerr Lake when the shad are spawning that’s the way to win and it takes about 18 pounds,” finished Hammack. “But, the water has come up five feet in two days and I think that’s why the weights were low. I was happy to win, but I was surprised. I didn’t think 14 pounds was enough.”
