The rookie wins the tournament! By Bruce Callis

By Bruce Callis

The rookie wins the tournament! The Virginia rookie on the Elite tour this year won his first tournament and a berth in the 2015 Bassmaster Classic. Yes, you read that right. Jacob Powroznik won the 2014 Evan Williams Bourbon Bassmaster Elite at Toledo Bend with a 5 fish bag of 19.11 pounds on the final day. A sweet comeback for the man that led after day 2, had a 5 fish limit for 11.13 pounds on day 3 and trailed entering the final day by almost 3 pounds.
What a finish to the final day too. With 10 minutes to go he was in a world of hurting, but culling out a 1.5 pound bass with a 5 pounder will always help. He edged out Dean Rojas, Chad Morgenthaler, Randall Tharp, and Mark Davis to win by two and a half pounds. He had no secret spot, no special bait that no one else had, he was doing the same thing everyone else was doing. A shad spawn in the morning was the big bass getter and bedding bass once the bite declined.
So why didn’t everyone else find the big bass? Toledo Bend is known for its big bass and big bag limits. Yet, so many Elite anglers finished their Day 2 with an average bass of 2 pounds. Two pounds from guys who are the cream of the bass fishing world? You are telling me that the best anglers couldn’t do better than a humble, broken down old angler like myself? I mean, didn’t they have practice days on the lake? Don’t they have the state of the art electronics to see the bass? Don’t they have the Hydrowave to excite the bass into a feeding frenzy? I mean, they have all the tools that we wish we had, on a boat we wish we were fishing out of, and yet, some don’t finish day 2 with even 10 fish. Am I missing something?
I’m pretty sure most of us are thinking the same thing; I can do better than that. I know I could have found the big girls on Toledo Bend and at least finished better than half the field. I mean, 10 bass of 3 pounds each would have put me in a tie for 44th place. I would have earned a check for $10,000 with that result. And if I had just found 1 or 2 of the big girls, who knows where I would have finished. I’m sure you are thinking the same thing; I could do that with ease.
Yeah, I know, I’m sitting myself up for a terrible day of fishing Saturday. But bass fishing can be humbling. I’ve had those days and will again, but I am not a Bassmaster Elite angler either. Where do you think you would have finished on day 2 on Toledo Bend? Or am I just missing it all?

5, 4, 3, 2, 1 with Casey Ashley by: Alan McGuckin

With a million dollar smile and a voice that Nashville saw worthy of recording a couple of years ago, there’s never really a bad time to be Casey Ashley.

But right now, on a string of top finishes, starting with the Bassmaster Classic three months ago, a $100,000 win in March and most recently a Top 5 this past weekend at Toledo Bend—it’s an especially good time to be Casey Ashley.

Here’s a look at life for the music loving, jig fishing, simplistic, 30-year-old from tiny Donalds, SC.

Thunderstorm
Weekend Weather Outlook for May 9-11 for Claytor Lake, Smith Mountain Lake and Lake Anna

The weekend is starting 2 days too late, with high temps above 90 POSSIBLE Thursday!

Friday- Skies should be mostly sunny with a slight chance of showers late, mainly over and near Clatory Lake. Highs should be 80-85 with winds under 10MPH, unless there is a Thunderstorm.

Friday Night- Chance of Showers SW areas near Claytor Lake, slight Chance near SML while Lak Anna should be dry. Temps will bottom out near 60 degrees all locations

Saturday- Partly to Mostly Cloudy with increasing chances of Showers and Thunderstorms. Showers will first pop up near Claytor Lake and will spread North and East from there. A steady period of shows and storms is a 50/50 call for all locations, with some places getting over a half inch rain during the showers and storms. High Temps will be 70-75.

Saturday Evening- Showers and Storms taper off by late evening. Low temps 60-65

Sunday- Party Cloudy, chance of showers and Thunderstorms. Would gamble that it’s a bit drier than Saturday.
As of now, Saturday looks like the day more likely to have rain issues on any of the local lakes. Sunday’s rain and showers looks much more scatters. With a little luck those storms stay west most of the day, with some misfortune rain could come in early and be an issue off an on all day.

How many pre-teens get to practice for the Classic with a legendary pro? Jacob Powroznik did!

Editor’s Note: This profile on 2014 Elite Series rookie Jacob Powroznik was written prior to his win at the Evan Williams Bourbon Bassmaster Elite at Toledo Bend .

The opportunity to fish with Woo Daves while the Virginia pro practiced for the Bassmaster Classic on the James River left a lasting impression on Jacob Powroznik when he was a youngster.

“Woo really had a big impact on me,” said Powroznik, whose dad was a friend of the former Bassmaster Classic champ. Powroznik also credits his dad as a major influence in guiding him on the path to the Bassmaster Elite Series.

The Elite Series newcomer recalls fishing his first tournament when he was about 10 or 11 years old. He and his buddy Wade Rook joined the Hard Luck Bass Club and fished together in the independent club’s team event on Buggs Island Reservoir in Virginia. “We did okay and came in second or third or something like that,” Powroznik reminisced. “We just had a good time and caught a bunch of fish.”

Chickamauga Spotted Bass to Also be Recognized as State Record

We brought you a story a while back about Shane McKee’s Tennessee state record spotted bass. Well now another Tennessee angler holds a spotted bass record, only this one didn’t erase McKee’s record, but rather both now have record spotted bass in Tennessee. Chris Coleman caught a 6-pound, 1-ounce spotted bass in 2011, that is now being recognized by the TWRA as a northern-strain spotted bass record for the state of Tennessee.
