BUCKHEAD, Ga. (Sept. 28, 2015) – Byron Kenney of Griffin, Georgia, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 12 pounds, 14 ounces Sunday to win the Walmart Bass Fishing League Bulldog Division Super Tournament on Lake Oconee with a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 29 pounds, 15 ounces. For his victory, Kenney earned $5,126.
“My strategy for this tournament was different from what I’ve done on this lake in the past,” said Kenney of his second career win in FLW competition. “I basically put my trolling motor down and fished as many docks as I could.
“I started at mid-lake areas on day one and worked my way south,” continued Kenney. “I targeted seawalls in the morning and docks for the remainder of the day using a green-pumpkin jig with a green-pumpkin Strike King Rage Craw as a trailer. I ended up weighing nine of my 10 bass that I brought to the scale off of it.”
Kenney said he followed a similar pattern on day two but focused on different areas of the lake.
“I caught nearly 10 keepers each day, but lost a few good bass as well,” said Kenney. “I thought the misses might cost me the tournament, but luckily, they didn’t.”
The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:
1st:          Byron Kenney, Griffin, Ga., 10 bass, 29-15, $5,126

GILBERTSVILLE, Ky. (Sept. 28, 2015) – Kyle Metzger of Paducah, Kentucky, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 20 pounds, 7 ounces Sunday to win the Walmart Bass Fishing League LBL Division Super Tournament on Kentucky and Barkley lakes with a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 44 pounds even. For his victory, Metzger earned $5,704.
On Saturday I ran 50 miles south to some grass near Paris where I had found some fish,” said Metzger of his second career win in FLW competition. “I used a bone-colored Picasso Shad Walker and was able to put a small limit in the boat by 10 a.m.
“Around 10 I moved to my second area, which was a flat outside of a bay just south of Paris,” continued Metzger. “It had a shell bed on one end and a ledge that stretched from 8 to 14 feet down the other. I moved up onto the shell bed and caught a 5-pounder using a swimbait on the first cast. Within 20 minutes I caught 23 pounds of bass.
“On day two I headed to the flat again. I threw the same swimbait, but the fish were hitting it a little bit different. The water was clear, so I switched to 15-pound test P-Line FloroClear and used a 7-foot Denali heavy action rod and had to jerk the bait more quickly.”
Metzger said that he then switched to a hairjig rigged with a Zoom Super Fluke to catch his last keeper and finish out his tournament.
“The fish bit it on the fall and I was able to grab my fifth keeper towards the end of the day,” said Metzger. “I had a great weekend on the water.”

APPLING, Ga. (Sept. 28, 2015) – David Williams of Maiden, North Carolina, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 14 pounds even Sunday to win the Walmart Bass Fishing League Savannah River Division Super Tournament on Clarks Hill Lake with a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 29 pounds, 2 ounces. For his victory, Williams earned $7,316.
“Coming into this tournament I wanted to try and cover as much water as I could,” said Williams, who has amassed more than $244,000 in winnings in FLW competition. “I ran from to creek to creek looking for baitfish. I eventually settled into three different areas.
“I targeted any natural cover I could find,” continued Williams. “The water was down nearly 6 feet so a lot of bass were hiding around the rock and wood because of how scarce it was. I used a spinnerbait to catch fish near the cover and the grasslines and a topwater propbait along the shore. When I wanted to slow my pace down, I flipped a TrueSouth Lures jig around docks.”
Williams said he caught seven hefty keepers on day one and 10 smaller keepers on day two.
“They ended up weighing enough to get me the win,” Williams said.

GROVE, Okla. (Sept. 28, 2015) – Kirk Smith of Edmond, Oklahoma, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 20 pounds, 15 ounces Sunday to win the Walmart Bass Fishing League Okie Division Super Tournament on Grand Lake with a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 35 pounds, 11 ounces. For his victory, Smith earned $6,910.
“I was targeting main-lake points in 10 to 12 feet of water,” said Smith of his first win in FLW competition. “At each point, there would be a small 100-square-foot spot that I had to cast to repeatedly to get a bite. These spots were typically around subtle irregularities in the shoreline, like a small inlet.”
Smith said he used a green-pumpkin-colored jig and a Gene Larew Biffle Bug to catch six keepers on Saturday and eight keepers on Sunday.
“I caught the majority of my fish between and 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.,” said Smith. “Two of them came on the Biffle Bug and the rest on the jig.”
The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:
1st:          Kirk Smith, Edmond, Okla., 10 bass, 35-11, $6,910

Whitney Stephens Wins At Lake Erie, Earns Berth In GEICO Bassmaster Classic

SANDUSKY, Ohio — Whitney Stephens’ tournament winning edge came not from a secret lure but a widely used electronic gadget rigged on the front deck of his boat. Knowing how to use it well paid off Saturday at the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Northern Open presented by Allstate.

Stephens, of Waverly, Ohio, won after three days with a final weight of 65 pounds, 1 ounce. He fished consistently all week, beginning in fifth place Thursday and moving to third on Friday. Jeff Lugar of Virginia took second place with 64-8, followed by third-place finisher Jason Root with 64-7.

Stephens relied on his bow-mounted fishfinder to pinpoint the location of smallmouth bass holding on isolated rockpiles. Those ranged in depth from the bottom at 28 to 23 feet on the peaks of underwater ridges. The rocks created a buffer of calm water for the bass until baitfish swept by in the current.

“I found the baitfish first and the bass were nearby,” he said. “It would have been nearly impossible to find them without the fishfinder.”

The electronics proved invaluable due to constantly shifting winds. The direction and velocity shifted each day, causing the bass to relocate their precise position on the rocks.

“It was like starting over every day because the wind made the current shift and reposition the bass,” he added.

He fished eight different areas around the bass-rich waters of Pelee Island. Stephens, like most other anglers fishing similar patterns, had limited fishing time due to rough boating conditions. The trip to his fishing area took one hour each way.

Stephens and the other top anglers used a drop shot rig. He used a 1/2-ounce VMC Tungsten weight and a size 1 Gamakatsu Split Shot/Drop Shot hook. He alternated between a Z-Man Jerk Shadz, Jackall Crosstail Shad and Gary Yamamoto Custom Baits Shad Shape Worm.

“I do a lot of ice fishing and it led to a discovery for me this week,” Stephens said. “What I found out is tungsten shows up better and is detected more clearly by an electronic graph.”

To see the weight and lure he made short pitches, not casts, to the rockpiles while watching the screen. The high definition features of the unit allowed him to easily see the lure, bait and bass.

Before even deciding to fish an area, he idled around the rockpiles in search of baitfish and bass. If those fish appeared on the graph, he stopped, sometimes leaving after 15 minutes unless getting a bite.

“I just alternated around all of the spots,” he added.

Stephens collected $6,443 and a Triton 19TrX boat with accessories, a Mercury 200 Pro XS outboard and custom trailer. The package is valued at $45,000. Just as important is the automatic berth he received for the 2016 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro on Oklahoma’s Grand Lake.

Mark Shopene, of Point Pleasant Beach, N.J., took first place in the co-angler division. He received a Nitro Z18 boat with accessories, a Mercury 150 Pro XS and custom trailer. The package is valued at $30,000.

Shopene fished a drop shot rig on all three days.

Finally, the Top 5 anglers from the 2015 Northern Open season received invitations to the 2016 Bassmaster Elite Series, the top tier of professional bass fishing.

The Allstate Good Hands, Great Day award of $250 will be presented to Jim Dillard for climbing the most points from Day 1 to Day 2. Co-angler Nick Ray wins $150.

The Livingston Lures Leader Award of $250 is presented to Derek Remitz for leading on Day 2. Co-angler Mark Shopene receives a Livingston Lures gift pack valued at $250.

The A.R.E. Top Angler award of $500 will be awarded to Fletcher Shryock.

The Bass Pro Shops Big Bass award of $750 goes to Rick Nitkiewicz for the 6-4 he caught on the first day. Co-angler Bob Snyder wins $250 for the 6-7 he caught on the first day.
