MOORESVILLE, N.C. (Sept. 14, 2015) – Jason Wilson of Lincolnton, North Carolina, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 14 pounds, 14 ounces Sunday to win the Walmart Bass Fishing League North Carolina Division Super Tournament on Lake Norman with a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 29 pounds, 4 ounces. For his victory, Wilson earned $6,817.
“I started out each day by throwing a custom-colored Rapala DT 10 crankbait near rocks and stumps and caught a couple of key fish,” said Wilson. “The rest of them came flipping a Jason’s Magic Craw-colored E.R. Lures jig around docks. I believe I weighed two fish off the crankbait each day and three from the jig.”
Wilson said his biggest fish came around 11 a.m. each morning of the tournament.
“The bigger fish definitely preferred the jig near the docks,” said Wilson.

LA CROSSE, Wis. (Sept. 14, 2015) – Travis Brueggen of Cashton, Wisconsin, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 16 pounds, 13 ounces Sunday to win the Walmart Bass Fishing League Great Lakes Division Super Tournament on the Mississippi River with a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 33 pounds, 2 ounces. For his victory, Brueggen earned $6,362.
“I was able to find some areas where the bass were active during practice,” said Brueggen of his third win in FLW competition. “The trick was following them as they moved out to deeper water in the afternoon sun.
“I concentrated on bank cuts, points, and deep sides of sloughs,” continued Brueggen. “I threw a shad-colored Heddon Zara Spook each morning and switched to a swimbait and a Rat-L-Trap in the afternoon. I knew I would need to adjust my approach as the bass transitioned to deeper water.”
Brueggen said he ended up catching nearly 42 keepers over the course of the tournament – 12 on day one and about 30 on day two.
“It was kind of goofy,” said Brueggen. “The fish weren’t necessarily on certain cover as I expected. I had to be dialed in on the right spot with the right structure at the right time. Luckily it ended up working out as planned.”

RAMAPO COLLEGE WINS FLW COLLEGE FISHING NORTHERN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP ON THE CHESAPEAKE BAY
[print_link]

NORTH EAST, Md. (Sept. 13, 2015) – The Ramapo College team of Andy Zapf of Whippany, New Jersey, and Andrew Annuzzi of Old Bridge, New Jersey, won the FLW College Fishing Northern Conference Championship on the Chesapeake Bay Sunday with a two-day total of eight bass weighing 19 pounds, 12 ounces. The victory earned the club $4,000 and qualified the team for the 2016 FLW College Fishing National Championship.
“It’s such a great feeling to come here and get the win this year,” said Annuzzi, a junior majoring in Environmental Science. “I competed in the Conference Championship last year, but we didn’t qualify. This will be my first College Fishing National Championship appearance and I couldn’t be more excited.”
“My older brother (Joseph) had won a few College Fishing events so it feels good to get one of my own,” said Zapf, a senior majoring in Accounting. “This will be my third time to the National Championship and it’s my last year of eligibility so we had to get it done this weekend.”
The duo said that they had a solid three days of practice on the fishery before the tournament, but only managed to catch three bass in their practice period. They decided to concentrate on the only area where they could find fish – the McDaniel Yacht Basin.
“Yesterday, the first day of the tournament, we stuck it out in the marina all day long,” Zapf said. “We caught three fish by 8:30 a.m., then didn’t catch another keeper all day long. We ended the day with 6 pounds and were sitting in 11th place.
“Today, we decided that if the marina wasn’t producing we would leave and try to find some new stuff to fish,” Zapf continued. “We caught one keeper early, but we decided to leave the marina around 9:30.”
The Ramapo club said that they bounced around and tried to find another area that would produce, but only managed to find two small keepers. They ended up returning to the marina to try to scrounge up a limit.
“The tide had pulled out, and we ended up catching two more in the marina,” Zapf said. “On our way back to check-in we stopped in a pocket a ½ mile from the ramp and were able to cull out a squeaker with just 20 minutes to go.”
“The key for us was definitely sticking to our plan and concentrating on that marina,” Annuzzi said. “We would pick apart every spot we could, then we would re-start and cycle through it again. We knew the fish were there.”
The Ramapo College said that they caught the majority of their fish on green-pumpkin jigs with a craw or beaver trailer, with a few coming on a drop-shot rigged Strike King Rage Craw.
The top 10 teams that advanced to the 2016 FLW College Fishing National Championship are:
1st: Ramapo College – Andrew Annuzzi, Old Bridge, N.J. and Andrew Zapf, Whippany, N.J. (eight bass, 19-12, $4,000)

3rd: Pennsylvania State University – Matt Bakewell, Brownsville, Pa., and Tyler Smith, Pine Grove, Pa. (five bass, 15-10, $1,000)
4th: University of Akron – Anthony Villalba, Silver Lake, Ohio, and Robert Webber, Elyria, Ohio (six bass, 14-2, $1,000)

The team of Wesley Strader and Cory D. Smith Win the NoogaStrong Memorial Bass Tournament on Lake Chickamauga

0
The team of Wesley Strader and Cory D. Smith found the 21-1 winning bag of Chickamauga bass punching matted grass with weighted soft plastics.

September 13, 2015  by Mark Bilbrey

Strader and Smith won $1500.00 the charity event that paid 45 places in the NoogaStrong Memorial Bass Tournament. The event brought out the true meaning of the American Spirit as Wesley Strader and Cary D. Smith started a trend that continued for every angler in the field as they were handed their checks. The winning team was the first to donate their earnings back to the cause and every angler including the big fish check followed suit, more than $17,500.00 was given back to the benefit. The money raised by the event exceeded the $25,000.00 goal established by organizers and donations are still coming in. The proceeds will be donated to the families of those murdered in an act of terrorism at a Chattanooga-area recruiting center in July.

The end of summer can bring some tough fishing on the “Chick” but the winning stringer of 21 pounds, 1 ounce brought in by Walmart FLW Tour pro Wesley Strader and his partner, Cary Smith, showed the nature of the event and the lake to be charitable.

image2.JPG

The legendary lake also produced a 21 pound stringer for a team of brothers, James and Jared Patmor, who finished in 2nd place. A massive 9-pound, 4-ounce bass was the big-bass of the event, caught by local angler Wes Hardin who also surrendered the big bass check back to the event. Out of 298 boats, thirty-five limits were brought to the scale with more than a thousand pounds of bass being weighed in. The event market a record of entries for an open event on the lake.

The anglers didnt have to give back their winnings but they did because it was the right thing to do. Thats what the tournament was about giving back to those who gave all, the fallen heros and their family and bringing a community together for a great cause after such a grotesque act of terrorism.

A very special thank you for all the armed forces fighting for our freedom around the world. Events like this should make us all proud to be Americans and proud to be anglers celebrating the freedoms given to us by so many who sacrificed everything. The event shows not only the strength of the Chattanooga area but that of the United States of America.

The Other Hometown Favorite Wins Fort Gibson Open

James Elam of Tulsa, Okla., wins the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open #2 presented by Allstate held on Fort Gibson Lake out of Wagoner, Okla. Elam brought 17 pounds, 8 ounces to Saturday’s weigh-in giving him a three-day total weight of 46-3.

The Other Hometown Favorite Wins Fort Gibson Open

WAGONER, Okla. — Bassmaster Elite Series pro Tommy Biffle of Wagoner, Okla., was the favorite to win the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open presented by Allstate at Fort Gibson Lake. Biffle’s home rests on the shores of Fort Gibson, and he won a Bassmaster Elite Series tournament here in 2010.

However, when the final bass was weighed at the Bass Pro Shops in Broken Arrow, Okla., Elite Series pro James Elam of Tulsa, Okla., another hometown favorite, nabbed the victory with a 17-pound, 8-ounce, limit. The heavy sack pushed his three-day total to 46-3.

A noisy, sign-waving crowd of Elam’s fans cheered as he held the victor’s trophy high above his head. When Elam competes in the final Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open of 2015 at Table Rock Lake, his Fort Gibson win will earn him a berth to the 2016 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro, which will be held on Oklahoma’s Grand Lake O’ the Cherokess.

A 10-inch Berkley worm and a Zoom Brush Hog accounted for most of Elam’s bass. He Texas rigged both baits with a 3/8-ounce sinker and 15-pound Seaguar InvizX Fluorocarbon line. A 3/16-ounce Owner Shakey Ultrahead dressed with a 7-inch Basskwondo worm also duped some key bass for Elam.

“It was tougher today,” Elam said. “I had to fish new water to get the bites I needed.”

For winning the tournament, Elam pocketed $53,083 and received a certificate for a Skeeter ZX200 with a Yamaha VF200LA motor package.

Elam also collected the $500 Power-Pole Captains Cash award and the $500 A.R.E. Top Angler Award.

Stetson Blaylock of Benton, Ark., lead the tournament with 31-6 when the final 12 competitors headed out on Fort Gibson Lake Saturday. He returned with an 11-pound limit, which dropped him to second place with a total of 42-6.

Blaylock also concentrated mainly on rocky, offshore structures. He found his bass in practice by casting a Livingston Lures Primetyme 2.0 square bill crankbait. When the tournament started, Blaylock stuffed his livewell with a 7.75-inch Yamamoto Kut Tail worm rigged on a 3/8-ounce football shaky head jig.

Blaylock shared water with other competitors on Thursday and Friday. He claims he fared better than his competitors because he fished more slowly.

“I was dragging the bait over the bottom,” he said.

Terry Peacock of Royse City, Texas, jumped from 10th to third place today with a 14-11 limit that boosted his total to 40-2. Unlike Elam and Blaylock, Peacock wielded a flipping rod and pitched a 10-inch Berkley Power Worm into newly flooded trees and bushes.

“I had been catching them in 4- to 8-feet of water,” Peacock said. “Today, I pitched the worm to trees in 12- to 15-feet that were under the surface.”

Saturday’s bass were suspended in the deeper trees 6- to 8-feet deep, Peacock added.

Co-angler Lonnie Miller of Broken Arrow, Okla., brought three-bass limits to the scales on Thursday and Friday, but managed only two bass today. Fortunately for Miller, they weighed 7-14 and brought his winning three-day total to 24-1. He pitched and cast a 10-inch ring worm to whatever cover his pro partners put within his range.

“I fished a big worm to eliminate bites from small bass,” Miller said.

Many bass shy of Fort Gibson’s 14-inch length limit were caught throughout the tournament, which bodes well for the lake’s future bass fishing. Besides the co-angler trophy, Miller will get the keys to a 179 Triton TrX with a Mercury 115 Pro XS motor package.

The 5-15 bass caught by Chad Wiley of Pineville, La., earned him the $750 Bass Pro Shops Big Bass award. Dane Coale of Norman, Okla., pocketed the $250 Bass Pro Shops Big Bass award on the co-angler side of the event for his 5-4 heavyweight.

For leading the tournament on Friday, Blaylock received the $250 Livingston Lures Leader Award. Joe Lee of Grand Prairie, Texas, claimed the co-angler Livingston Lures Leader Award, which is worth $250 in Livingston merchandise.

The $250 Allstate Good Hands, Great Day Award went to pro angler Brandon Lee of Ratcliff, Ark. Michael Scalise of Port Allen, La., received the $150 Allstate Good Hands, Great Day Award for the co-angler.

Fort Gibson’s Changing Face, Blaylock Takes The Lead In Central Open

Fort Gibson’s Changing Face, Blaylock Takes The Lead In Central Open

WAGONER, Okla. — Consistency is everything in the sport of tournament bass fishing. If you slam a heavy limit one day and bomb the next, you have no chance of winning a multi-day Bassmaster Opens tournament.

The mark of a superior angler is the ability to switch gears and catch bass when fishing conditions change. The conditions changed dramatically from Thursday to Friday at the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open presented by Allstate at Fort Gibson Lake.

Thursday was hot and calm with rising water. Overnight storms ushered in much cooler temperatures, an overcast sky and a blustery wind Friday. Of the Top 3 anglers Thursday, only one survived today to make the Top 12 cut for Saturday’s finale. That person is hometown favorite Tommy Biffle of Wagoner, Okla. He dropped from second to seventh place.

The angler who held serve is Stetson Blaylock of Benton, Ark., who started today in fourth place with 17 pounds, 4 ounces. Blaylock claimed the lead with a 14-2 limit and a two-day total of 31-6.

“I’ve been sharing water with other anglers,” Blaylock said. “There are only a few really good places here right now.”

Blaylock claims that he doesn’t mind sharing water as long as everyone is cordial. Even though the field will be cut to 12 anglers on Saturday, he believes he will still have to share water.

When asked Thursday why he was catching heavier limits than the other anglers fishing the same water he is, Blaylock was mum. Today he revealed that fishing slower than his competitors has given him the edge.

With a 13-pound limit Thursday, Bassmaster Elite Series pro James Elam of Tulsa, Okla., was in 25th place and didn’t seem like a threat to win. Today, he overcame conditions that made for tougher fishing and boated a 15-11 limit. That jumped his total to 28-11 and landed him in second place.

Elam has been fishing mainly offshore with four different lures. Friday, he had to downsize his offerings to get bites.

“I would have died today if I had kept fishing like I did yesterday,” Elam said. “As tough as it is now, I’ll have to keep an open mind tomorrow.”

Saturday will show the anglers another face of Fort Gibson with clear skies and a high barometer, post-frontal conditions that usually turn off the bass.

Stephen Browning of Hot Springs, Ark., is another consistent Elite Series pro. His Thursday limit of 14-2 had him 14th place. Today Browning sacked 12-11 and leapfrogged to third place with 26-13. He relied on the same pattern each day, but has had to keep on the move and fish new water.

“These bass are not stacked,” Browning said. “When you catch one you have to run 3 miles to catch another one.”

Joe Lee of Grand Prairie, Texas, sacked an impressive 12-2 three-bass limit today to take the lead in the co-angler division with 20 pounds even. Lee claims that his partner today made an adjustment around noon that put them on the bass.

The 5-15 bass that Elite Series pro Fred Roumbanis of Bixby, Okla., caught Thursday is still the biggest bass caught by any angler in the pro division. Should it hold up one more day, Roumbanis will win the $750 Bass Pro Shops Big Bass award.

Co-angler Dane Coale of Norman, Okla., will pocket a $250 Bass Pro Shops Big Bass award if his 5-4 lunker isn’t bested by another co-angler on Saturday.

Pro angler Brandon Lee of Ratcliff, Ark., won the $250 Allstate Good Hands, Great Day award for climbing the most points from Thursday to Friday. His whopping 18-9 on today rocketed him from 111th to 24th place.

Michael Scalise of Port Allen, La., won the Good Hands, Great Day co-angler award of $150 for leapfrogging from 114th to 43rd place.

Saturday’s takeoff will take place at 6:45 a.m. CT at Taylors Ferry North. The final weigh-in will be held at 3:45 p.m. at the Bass Pro Shops at 101 Bass Pro Drive in Broken Arrow, Okla. Tune into Bassmaster.com for live blog updates, photos and more on Saturday.

V&M The Pulse Pacemaker Swim Jig Review

Jason Sealock

See why we think this is a really well made, well though out swim jig you should check out.

Fishing swim jigs was cool long before it was en vogue where I grew up bass fishing. We called it “winding” a jig back then. We had caught so many just reeling a big jig in after flipping that we started just “winding” the jig around and catching big ones. We had it to ourselves for a long time when I was growing up. But today’s swim jigs definitely make it an easier process.

I’ve been throwing the V&M The Pulse Pacemaker Swim Jig a bunch this year. Here are some of my thoughts on this relatively new swim jig created and literally crafted by the 2013 Bassmaster Classic champion Cliff Pace. In fact if you buy one of these jigs, there is a good chance Pace had a hand in actually making the jig for you.

DOOR COUNTY, Wis. — More than $1 million in payouts and coveted berths in the 2016 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro are on the line for the nation’s Top-50 bass anglers as they compete in the season-ending Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Championship Sept. 17-20 on the legendary waters of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.

Typically, this is the event that determines the season’s best Elite Series angler, but after one of the most dominating seasons in history, Aaron Martens locked up the 2015 Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year title at the end of the regular season. Martens earned his third AOY title after his sixth-place finish at Detroit’s Lake St. Clair gave him the necessary points.

Renowned area guide Bret Alexander of Alexander Sport Fishing says the anglers who are accomplished at interpreting sonar will likely be the most consistent through three days of competition.

“I really believe that 20 pounds of smallmouth bass, or better, per day will be required to win this event,” Alexander said. “Staying on fish of that caliber could be accomplished by fishing deep humps and ledges.”

A 25- to 26-pound daily limit of five smallmouth is possible, but he doesn’t think weights like that will be sustainable throughout the tournament.

During the 2014 Angler of the Year Championship out of Escanaba, Mich., high winds kept competitors onshore three consecutive days and shortened the event to only two days of competition.  To keep that from happening again, tournament officials have expanded the waters open to fishing. In the event of strong westerly winds, the pros will be permitted to fish Lake Michigan on the east side of Door Peninsula.

“The Lake Michigan back-up plan could be very interesting if we get a strong westerly blow,” Alexander explained. “There are some big fish on that side of the peninsula, but the numbers can’t compare to Green Bay.”

After a successful 2015 Toyota Bassmaster Elite Series rookie season, Seth Feider considers Sturgeon Bay one of his favorite fisheries. Although the angler fell short of the Top 50 cut by only eight spots, he is confident in how he would approach the tournament if he were fishing.

“I’d keep several bait combinations on the deck of my boat,” said the Minnesota resident. “A small- and medium-size swimbait, wacky rigged Senko, a drop shot and a deep-diving Shadow Rap would be my go-to baits — I know those presentations will catch fish.”

The smallmouth bass in Sturgeon Bay and surrounding areas are experiencing increased growth and age structure with lots of large fish.

“The Sturgeon Bay region has also been experiencing tremendous recruitment in recent years,” explained David Boyarski, Northern Lake Michigan Fisheries Supervisor with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. “With lots of young smallmouth bass coming into the system, we are confident that the strength of the fishery will continue to be outstanding.”

Takeoffs will be held out of CenterPointe Marina at 6:30 a.m. CT. Afternoon weigh-ins will be held in the same location beginning at 3:15 p.m. where the Top 50 pros will compete for a combined purse of $1 million and a 2016 GEICO Bassmaster Classic berths.

On Saturday, Sept. 19, all 50 anglers will participate in Bassmaster University, which will take place during the day at Stone Harbor Resort & Conference Center. Anglers, including former AOYs Kevin VanDam, Michael Iaconelli and Skeet Reese, will be available for meet-and-greets, bass-fishing advice and seminars. Local vendors and sponsors will also be on-hand to discuss products and services.

Also on Saturday as part of its Bassmaster Fan and Military Appreciation Day, B.A.S.S. will give a special commemorative Bassmaster cap to the first 250 military service members who come to the B.A.S.S. booth with a military identification card. All 50 Elite anglers will be on hand to sign autographs as well.

Activities planned throughout the weekend are free and open to the public. Companies like Mercury, Nitro, Skeeter, Triton, and Yamaha will have booths at the expo and will offer demo rides. Toyota, Carhartt, Berkley, Booyah, Humminbird, Livingston Lures, Lowrance, Minn Kota, Mustang, Plano, Power-Pole, Shimano, Rigid Industries and Costa Sunglasses, will also exhibit.

The local hosts for the event are the Sturgeon Bay Visitor Center and the Door County Visitor Bureau.
