B.A.S.S. Announces Expanded Bassmaster Elite Series Schedule For 2016

[print_link]

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Some of America’s top-ranked bass fisheries — plus a new wrinkle in tournament formats and an extra event — await the nation’s top professional bass anglers competing in the 2016 Bassmaster Elite Series.

The lineup will take anglers to 10 fisheries in nine states, and it includes 10 Elite events, an increase from nine Elite tournaments in 2015.

The world’s premier bass tournament circuit kicks off in Tulsa, Okla., March 4-6, when the GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro, widely known as the “Super Bowl of Bass Fishing,” unfolds on Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees.

Two weeks later, the Elite Series gets underway on Florida’s St. Johns River, a hugely popular stop for veteran professionals. From there, the circuit winds through eight more states before concluding in the $1 million Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Championship in mid-September at a site to be announced later.

“We believe the 2016 Elite Series lineup of lakes is the best we’ve ever put together,” said Bruce Akin, B.A.S.S. CEO. “Our Elite anglers will find a lot to love about it, and we are expecting to attract new fans in new places this year. That’s the key to growing the sport.” Akin noted that the Elite Series has set new attendance records each of the past three years. The previous record of 128,600 from 2014 was shattered in August. With one event remaining in the season — the 2015 Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Championship at Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin — attendance for the season has already reached 156,765.

Most of the 2016 tournament destinations are included in the Bassmaster Magazine’s 100 Best Bass Lakes list for 2015.

Toledo Bend Reservoir on the Texas-Louisiana border was named the nation’s No. 1 bass lake this year. It will host Elite No. 5, May 12-15. Other top-notch bass fisheries include the St. Johns River (56th); Bull Shoals Lake, Arkansas (44th); Cayuga Lake, New York (61st); and the Mississippi River at La Crosse, Wis. (52nd).

Winyah Bay at Georgetown, S.C., where the Pee Dee, Black and Sampit rivers of South Carolina converge, appears on the Elite list for the first time, although B.A.S.S. club anglers fished it during the Old Milwaukee B.A.S.S. Nation Southern Divisional in April 2015. Big bass in that event weighed 7 pounds, 9 ounces.

Elite No. 3, to be held in April out of Mountain Home, Ark., will take place on two lakes — a first for Elite competition. The pros will alternate between two adjacent fisheries, Bull Shoals Lake, west of Mountain Home, and Norfork Lake, east of the host city. The full field of approximately 110 competitors will compete one day on Bull Shoals and the next on Norfork. The field will be cut to 50 for the semifinals on Bull Shoals, and then to the Top 12 for the final round on Norfork.

“This event will challenge the pros’ strategic decision-making during practice,” said Angie Thompson, vice president of events and sponsorship activation for B.A.S.S. “Bull Shoals and Norfork will fish very similarly, but the anglers will have to be strategic in how and where they practice for the two lakes.” As in most other Elite events, the anglers will have three days of official practice immediately preceding the competition.

The tournament will mark the first visit to Norfork for the Bassmaster Elite Series, which celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2016. Weigh-ins will be on the campus of Arkansas State University/Mountain Home, one of the most picturesque settings in the Ozarks.

Akin said special announcements are planned later for other events in 2016, including the third annual BASSfest and the 2016 Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Championship.

The popular Bassmaster Marshal program, which permits fishing fans to ride along and observe the Elite pros during competition, will continue in 2016. Enrollment for B.A.S.S. Nation and Life members begins Dec. 1 online and Dec. 3 by phone. Registration for other B.A.S.S. members begins Dec. 8 online and Dec. 10 by phone. Entries will be accepted beginning at 9 a.m. CT each of those days.

Newcomer Leads Hometown Favorite In Bassmaster Open Tournament

[print_link]

WAGONER, Okla. — When hometown angler Tommy Biffle of Wagoner, Okla., snatched the lead with 17 pounds, 10 ounces of largemouth bass Thursday, it appeared that the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open presented by Allstate at Fort Gibson Lake was his tournament to lose.

Biffle, a storied Bassmaster Elite Series pro, is a heavy favorite to win this event. In fact, he fished only four hours during the three official practice days preceding the tournament, and he did so “incognito.”

As competition began Thursday, Biffle fished offshore sweet spots that have produced for him in the past. His home-lake advantage allowed him to cull through 10 bass and save plenty of good water for the remainder of the three-day event.

It comes as no surprise that Biffle caught all of his bass on a Gene Larew Biffle Hardhead dressed with a Gene Larew Biffle Bug. Both lures are his designs.

Since Biffle did not qualify for the 2016 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro via the Elite Series, he must win one of the final two Bassmaster Central Open tournaments to get there.

“I have to win this one,” Biffle said. He is especially intent on qualifying for the 2016 “Super Bowl of Bass Fishing” because it will be held on another of his favorite lakes, Oklahoma’s Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees.

Brad Whatley of Bivens, Texas, who had never fished Fort Gibson before this week, edged Biffle when he weighed a limit that went 18-9 to nab the lead. Whatley said he had a “decent practice,” but that he grew concerned when he learned Wednesday evening that the lake level was rising.

“I nearly panicked last night,” Whatley said. “I went out today and threw away everything I’d found in practice.”

Whatley adjusted to the rising water better than anyone else in the tournament and boated 10 quality bass from which he culled his heavy limit.

In third place is another Texan, Tim Cline of Sherman, with 17-9, an ounce behind Biffle. Cline hooked nine hefty bass throughout the day by “junk fishing,” but landed only six of them.

“It’s not a matter of getting bites, it’s getting them in the boat,” Cline said.

Chad Wiley of Pineville, La., caught the heaviest bass on the pro side of the event, a 5-15 largemouth. The pro who catches the biggest bass during the tournament earns a $750 Bass Pro Shops Big Bass award.

Skip Ibbotson of Green Forest, Ark., is atop the leaderboard for the co-anglers with a three-bass limit that weighed 10-9.

Dane Coale of Norman, Okla., landed the biggest bass caught by a co-angler, a 5-4. If no co-angler catches a bigger bass before the tournament ends, Coale will pocket a $250 Bass Pro Shops Big Bass award.

Dock talk prior to the tournament was dire. When several of the pros were asked if Fort Gibson would be as stingy as the Central Open here in September 2014, most said it would be worse. Elite Series pro Jason Christie won that event with a three-day total of 40-15.

The fishing today proved to be tough for most of the field. However, with five limits over 17 pounds, Fort Gibson is exceeding expectations. That may change due to the fluctuating water level, a chance of rain Friday and heavy fishing pressure.

Although Fort Gibson boasts 19,900 surfaces acres, many anglers complain that it “fishes small,” especially given the large, 166-boat field in this tournament. Offshore sweet spots are crowded, and visible shallow targets are being hammered.

The fluctuating lake level is proving to be a high hurdle. Over the past few weeks, Fort Gibson had finally dropped to normal pool after months of high water. A stable, normal pool level favors the offshore bite here, while high water makes for better shallow, target fishing.

Fishing resumes Friday morning with takeoff at 6:45 a.m. CT at Taylors Ferry North. Friday’s weigh in will be at the same location at 2:45 p.m. Saturday’s takeoff will take place at the same time and place, whereas the weigh-in will be held at 3:45 p.m. at the Bass Pro Shops at 101 Bass Pro Drive in Broken Arrow, Okla. FLW COLLEGE FISHING SOUTHERN CONFERENCE FINALE SET FOR RED RIVER

FLW COLLEGE FISHING SOUTHERN CONFERENCE FINALE SET FOR RED RIVER
[print_link]
NATCHITOCHES, La. (Sept. 8, 2015) – FLW College Fishing is headed to the Red River September 19 for the third and final regular-season tournament in the Southern Conference. A full field of college teams will be competing for a top award of $2,000 and a berth in the Southern Conference Championship tournament.
“The water has been muddy, so I know the fishing will be great for this tournament,” said Walmart FLW Tour legend Larry Nixon of Bee Branch, Arkansas, who posted a 5th place finish in the 2013 Forrest Wood Cup on the Red River.
“There are a couple of different patterns that will be popular,” said Nixon. “Anglers will be tackling bass on the main river and in the backwaters. I could see many of them fishing rocks, wood and jetties with Chartreuse-colored crankbaits and possibly even spinnerbaits and buzzbaits. This is the time of year when bass are feeding heavily on shad, so flipping main-river cattails using Pearl White-colored creature baits could also prove to be a good strategy.
“In the backwaters they’ll be looking for submerged, grassy points,” Nixon continued. “The water is much clearer so I could see a Carolina- or Texas-rigged worm doing really well. Competitors may also reach for jigs or buzzbaits, but there would need to be some lily pads in the area.
Nixon said he thinks a five-bass stringer nearing 19 pounds will be enough to take home top honors.
“It could take over 20 pounds, but someone would have to get really lucky,” said Nixon.
Anglers will take off from the Grand Ecore Recreation Area ramp, located at 1071 Tauzin Island Road in Natchitoches, at 7 a.m. CST Saturday. Weigh-in will be held at the landing beginning at 3 p.m. Takeoff and weigh-in are free and open to the public.

Berkley E-Motion Casting Rod Review

Walker Smith

Priced at $79.99, these bass fishing rods provide excellent performance at a reasonable price point

I’ve always been drawn to reasonably priced bass fishing gear. It wasn’t long ago when I was a college angler using only my local tournament winnings to pay for new rods, reels and lures; so I can certainly relate to the budget-minded angler. This sport can become downright expensive in a hurry.

For the past several months, I’ve had an opportunity to test the new $79.99 Berkley E-Motion Performance Series Casting Rods. After using these rods on big lakes, small ponds and even during larger tournaments, I think they’re an excellent option for anglers looking for quality performance at fair price point.

The Bass Fishing with the Swift Creek Reservoir Guide Service continues to be amazing. One of the biggest reasons why is the healthy amount of aquatic vegetation in the lake. The grass is not only protecting the next generation of fish, and filtering the water, but it also provides perfect habitat for the apex predators (largemouth bass and chain pickerel) to hide, and ambush their prey. For those not used to fishing around aquatic vegetation, there can be somewhat of a learning curve, but once you get the hang of it, hold on tight, because the fishing is awesome. We have been catching good numbers of fish in the 1.5lb to 3 lb range, and regularly catching bass from 4lbs all the way up to 7lbs.
With the nights starting to cool off just a bit, the days getting shorter, and the kids going back to school, the fish know that fall is right around the corner. I like to call this time of year “the fall feed bag.” This is when the water temps start to drop, the baitfish start to school up, and the bass start to feed heavily to bulk up for winter. The problem is that it’s hard to know exactly when that will happen. As of writing this article on Aug, 31st, the fish are still in their typical summer patterns of hiding in the grass eating the easy meal, and hanging out deep on points, or creek channels. So, for the beginning of the month, reference the July, and August reports for the best patterns and baits to try (www.machekfishing.com/fishingreport).
When the fish do change into their fall patterns, as a general rule of thumb, is when the water surface temperatures drop down into the 70’s. Currently the lake level is continuing to drop, and this temperature drop will likely be a result of colder rains flowing into the lake. The rain will not only cool the water temps, but also pump all kinds of nutrients into the lake (which is why it’s important to carefully select and apply lawn fertilizers). The baitfish, shad, and brim will be drawn to these areas, and the bass will not be far behind. If we happen to receive enough rain to bring the water levels back up, the many docks and stop-a-whiles around the lake will have enough depth to start producing again. Almost any type of bait that imitates a shad will work: Spinnerbaits, swimbaits, and crankbaits. The depth, and retrieve speed should match the depth of the baitfish. The most important thing to note is that all of these tips are dependent on the weather. If the weather doesn’t change much, then neither will the fishing.
The many grass beds around the lake should start to thin out this month, before they actually die off over the winter. Continue to work texas rigs, and other weedless/semiweedless lures around the edges. I expect the topwater fishing to get better throughout this month, and if you see a grass bed matted on the surface, try throwing a floating frog over the top. This will not always produce, but when it does, it is my favorite type of fishing. The thicker the vegetation, the heavier your rod, and fishing line needs to be. The next few months are an important time to keep your eye out, and be aware of your surroundings. You will often be able to spot baitfish on the surface, see bass actively feeding, and you might even find a few new fishing spots because of it. Good luck, take a kid fishing, and I’ll see you on the water! If you have questions please contact me at [email protected] or on social media, and continue to submit your fish catch photos to be included in next month’s article.

Fort Gibson Central Open Is A Race For Points And Classic Berths

Fort Gibson Central Open Is A Race For Points And Classic Berths

[print_link]

WAGONER, Okla. — Every angler who fishes all three tournaments in any of the three Bassmaster Open divisions shares the same dream. That dream is to win one of the events and qualify for the GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro.

For Bassmaster Elite Series pro Tommy Biffle, the upcoming Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Central Open presented by Allstate at Fort Gibson Lake could be a dream come true — or a nightmare.

With 19 Bassmaster Classic appearances, seven Bassmaster victories and more than $2 million in winnings, Biffle’s storied career has been a model of consistency. That has not been the case in 2015. With the regular Elite Series season complete, he finds himself in 87th place, well below the Top 50 cutoff for Elite anglers vying for Classic spots and Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year prize money.

His last hope of qualifying for the 2016 Classic at Oklahoma’s Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees lies in winning the Fort Gibson Open.

This is anything but a long shot for Biffle, however. He has been fishing Fort Gibson for more than four decades, has a home on the lake and handily won an Elite Series tournament there in June 2010 with a four-day total of 73 pounds, 11 ounces.

Then again, Biffle finished fourth when he fished a Bassmaster Central Open at Fort Gibson in 2012. Fellow Oklahoman and Elite Series pro Jason Christie won that tournament with a weight of 40-15.

The disparity between the two winning weights is due to the timing of the events. June typically yields good bass fishing. Not so for September.

“September is the worst month to fish here … and just about anywhere,” Biffle said.

Before he left home for the recent Elite Series tournament at Lake St. Clair, he found the fishing at Fort Gibson to be “pretty tough.” He believes it will take 40 to 45 pounds to win the Central Open here.

Drastically fluctuating water levels could make the fishing especially challenging during the Open.

“The lake was 28 feet high most of the summer,” Biffle said. “Then it got down to 9 feet high and then back up to 18. It was still high when I left for Lake St. Clair.” If the lake stabilizes near normal pool, the fishing will improve, he believes. “When the lake gets high, it scatters the fish,” he said.

At normal lake levels, bass gang up on rocks, brushpiles and offshore sweet spots. Because Biffle knows where many of these places exist at Fort Gibson, stable water lets him make the most of his home field advantage.

When bass hang offshore at Gibson, they rarely go deeper than 15 feet. This makes them easy targets for the Gene Larew Biffle Bug/Biffle Hardhead combination that Biffle used to catch every one of his fish during the previous two Bassmaster events he fished here.

Should high water scatter the bass, Biffle’s home field advantage is reduced, giving his competitors a better shot at victory.

Consider that Christie caught his bass less than 2 feet deep when he won the Central Open here in 2012. He relied on a Rebel Wee-R crankbait, a Heddon One Knocker Spook and a Yum Wooly Bug to pick off bass from isolated rocks and any other cover he could find on shallow flats. Christie will be fishing the upcoming Fort Gibson Open, too.

Elite Series pro Scott Ashmore, another Oklahoman, has not entered this tournament, but he has fished many events at Fort Gibson over the past 25 years.

“I prefer to fish Gibson when the water’s high,” Ashmore said. “You can catch them by flipping willow trees and fishing docks.”

Kevin Ledoux, another Oklahoma Elite Series pro, who is not fishing Fort Gibson next week, claims the river bite could be good if the water is high. He expects slow fishing and predicts bass will be scattered at depths ranging from the shallows out to 12 feet deep.

“It’s no fluke that Biffle won at Gibson with a Biffle Bug,” Ledoux said. “Throwing a Biffle Bug and a big Texas worm to brushpiles could be what wins.” He also believes that fishing shallow rocks with a square bill crankbait might produce the winning catch.

Whether the bass are stacked offshore or scattered, Biffle is sure to pull out all stops to win. In his 2010 Fort Gibson win, he famously skipped practice to mow his lawn. Overconfidence may have been his downfall in 2012, but don’t expect him to make the same mistake again.

“I’ve got to win this one to make it to the Classic,” Biffle said. “I’ll be after it from the start this time.”
