OCALA MAN WINS $10,000 PLAYING FLW FANTASY FISHING

OCALA MAN WINS $10,000 PLAYING FLW FANTASY FISHING
MINNEAPOLIS (Sept. 1, 2015) – Jimmy Bass of Ocala, Florida, won the $10,000 grand prize playing FLW Fantasy Fishing and being named the top-scoring player in the seven-event Walmart FLW Tour season. Bass correctly picked two tournament winners and numerous top-10 finishers over the course of the 2015 season. The season concluded last week with the Forrest Wood Cup on Lake Ouachita presented by Walmart, the world-championship of bass-fishing. Bass beat out thousands of Fantasy Fishing players from around the globe.
“To win $10,000 by playing Fantasy Fishing feels absolutely fantastic,” said Bass. “Most fantasy-type games are pay-to-play, but not FLW Fantasy Fishing. I signed up and played for absolutely nothing, and still won $10,000. This is amazing.
“I definitely do my homework – I put in nearly 20 hours of research before every event,” continued Bass. “I use the Member’s Advantage tools provided by FLW, FLW Bass Fishing Magazine and the FLW website – anything that gives me good insight about the professional anglers. After that, I search as many sources as I can for information about the lake’s conditions when the event takes place, like past winning weights and previous tournament-winners.”
Bass said it doesn’t take much effort for him to usually pick his top-20 favorites for each event, but narrowing his team down to 10 and picking a winner is much more difficult.
“Occasionally I’ll have to pick from anglers out of my original top 20 to stay under the salary cap,” said Bass. “But usually I can formulate a good combination of top-tier anglers and budget picks.”
Finishing in second place for the 2015 Fantasy Fishing season was Stanley Socha Jr. of Tolland, Connecticut, who won $2,000, and in third place was Corey Alexander of Carbon Hill, Alabama, who won $1,000. Several other winners from across the globe took home up to $500 in cash prizes.
The 2015 Fantasy Fishing season consisted of seven tournaments surrounding the Walmart FLW Tour regular season as well as the season-ending Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of bass fishing. Fans competed for more than $7,000 in cash and prizes from each of the six tournaments and a top prize of $5,000. The cumulative grand prize for the highest ranked player at the end of the season is $10,000.

OAK FOREST MAN WINS $5,000 PLAYING FLW FANTASY FISHING

OAK FOREST MAN WINS $5,000 PLAYING FLW FANTASY FISHING
MINNEAPOLIS (Sept. 1, 2015) – Tom Barry of Oak Forest, Illinois, correctly picked eight of the top 10 anglers in professional bass fishing’s world championship – the Forrest Wood Cup at Lake Ouachita presented by Walmart. For his picks, Barry won $5,000 by playing FLW Fantasy Fishing, beating out thousands of players from around the world to win the top prize.
“Honestly, when I signed up I never really expected to win,” said Barry. “A couple of years ago I took advantage of the opportunity to play through my FLW membership. It helped me keep tabs on the sport and how the FLW Tour professional anglers were doing.
“Most of the research I did was through FLW Bass Fishing Magazine,” continued Barry. “Between the magazine and the FLW website, there are many great resources for not only Fantasy Fishing, but for my own research as an angler.
“I started by following certain professionals,” said Barry. “I analyzed where they were from, as well as their strengths and specialties. From there I pieced together my top picks. I also have a handful of anglers that I follow on a regular basis, like 2015 Angler of the Year Scott Martin, so I could make educated guesses on where they’d end up finishing. I also chose competitors from the region who were familiar with the area.”
Barry said he plans to use the prize money to pay off some bills and purchase a new anchor for his boat.
“I imagine there will be a few more fishing rods coming my way too,” said Barry.
Finishing in second place on the fantasy side for the Forrest Wood Cup event was John Battani of Sterling Heights, Michigan, who won $1,000, and in third place was David Rowe of Pittsford, New York, who won $500. Several other winners from across the globe took home prizes including cash, ShopFLW gift cards, hats and baits.

MATUAL WINS RAYOVAC FLW SERIES NORTHERN DIVISION FINALE ON LAKE ERIE PRESENTED BY EVINRUDE

MATUAL WINS RAYOVAC FLW SERIES NORTHERN DIVISION FINALE ON LAKE ERIE PRESENTED BY EVINRUDE
Hicks wins co-angler title

SANDUSKY, Ohio (Aug. 29, 2015) – David Matual of Chicago, Illinois, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 22 pounds, 6 ounces Saturday to win the Rayovac FLW Series Northern Division finale on Lake Erie presented by Evinrude with a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 65 pounds even. For his win, Matual earned $31,229.
“I’m shaking, I don’t think the win has set in yet,” said Matual, who earned his first career win as a boater in Rayovac FLW Series competition. “I had a tough practice so I didn’t know what to expect. The cold weather had dropped the surface temperature of the water nearly eight degrees during the week.”
Despite the difficult practice, Matual said he was able to dial in on bass that were chasing baitfish within a 100-foot stretch of reef just south of Pelee Point.
“I went to that area and had a five-bass limit within 30 minutes each day,” said Matual. “I was dropping-shotting a Jackall Crosstail Shad in a variety of colors. If that missed, I used a green-pumpkin-colored Chompers Tube. The bass were so aggressive I could see them breaking the top of the water going after baitfish. I figured they would bite any lure I threw down there.”
Matual said he caught approximately 55 keepers, in around 15 to 18 of water, over the course of the tournament.
“I was all alone in my area,” said Matual. “No one else was fishing around me. It was the perfect storm.”

“I was catching them along a half-mile stretch of hydrilla in the northwest corner of the lake,” said Ragan of his first win in FLW competition. “I was looking for thick patches that still had some scattered hydrilla on the edges.
“On day one I stopped hitting the area around 1 p.m. so the fish could replenish,” continued Ragan. “I was hooking bass in the 4-pound range and was culling 4-pounders as well, so I knew I needed to take it easy.”
Ragan said his primary baits were a black hollow-bodied frog and a chartreuse-colored Heddon Zara Spook which he fished in approximately 3½ feet of water.
“The fishing on day two was much more difficult,” said Ragan. “I actually lost four big bites each day, but when you’re using a hollow-bodied frog, that will happen.
“Over the course of the tournament, the bite seemed to pick up around 11 o’clock,” continued Ragan. “Beyond that I’d get a bite here and there. It was pretty scattered throughout the day.
“I’d like to thank Aqua Tech Marine in Palm Bay, Florida,” said Ragan. “They set me up with a boat and all of the right equipment. They were a big part of the win.”

SHELBYVILLE, Ill. (Aug. 31, 2015) – Shawn Hemken of Walshville, Illinois, brought a five-bass limit to the scale Sunday weighing 11 pounds, 6 ounces to win the Walmart Bass Fishing League Illini Division Super Tournament on Lake Shelbyville with a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 26 pounds, 1 ounce. For his victory, Hemken earned $6,882.
“The bass have been scattered lately due to changes in the lake’s depth, but as soon as it settled I knew they’d be right where I needed them,” said Hemken of his second win in FLW competition.
“Each day I had five keepers by 10 a.m.,” continued Hemken. “I targeted rocks early using a shaky-head rig. I would get a couple of good-sized fish before the bite dwindled. After that I’d head up and down the lake hitting deep points and submerged wood – all in about 20 feet of water. I preferred a watermelon-colored Zoom Brush Hog and a green-pumpkin-colored Missile Baits D Bomb, Texas-rigged.
“I was constantly in search of a kicker,” added Hemken. “I probably caught around 16 keepers over the course of the tournament.”
Hemken said it was his familiarity with the lake that helped him make difficult decisions.
“I’ve been on that lake all summer,” said Hemken. “I knew that in order to find the bigger fish I’d need to get out to those deep points and it worked out.”
The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:
1st:          Shawn Hemken, Walshville, Ill., 10 bass, 26-1, $4,882 + $2,000 Ranger Cup Bonus
2nd:         Derek Jenkel, Pinckneyville, Ill., 10 bass, 24-13, $2,441

HENDERSON, N.C. (Aug. 31, 2015) – Brandon Gray of Bullock, North Carolina, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 14 pounds, 3 ounces Sunday to win the Walmart Bass Fishing League Piedmont Division Super Tournament on Kerr Lake with a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 32 pounds, 14 ounces. For his victory, Gray earned $5,886.
Gray said he focused on managing fish in two main areas near Nutbush Creek in order to catch his fish and earn his fourth career win in FLW competition.
“I was running between spots where the fish were near stumps and rock, in the front of grass lines,” said Gray. “I was able catch them in the grass but the bigger-sized bass came right in front of it. I had a couple of other areas with similar cover where I caught several fish, but it really came down to two primary locations.”
Gray said he caught the majority of his bass on a green-pumpkin-colored Shooter Jig rigged with a Zoom Super Chunk and a green and white-colored Old Poe’s crankbait.
“On day one I brought in close to 30 keepers and about 11 on day two,” said Gray. “I just stayed focused. Luckily it all came together and worked out like I hoped.”

GALLATIN, Tenn. (Aug. 31, 2015) – Drew Boggs of Lebanon, Tennessee, brought five bass totaling 13 pounds, 12 ounces to the scale Sunday to win the Walmart Bass Fishing League Music City Division Super Tournament on Old Hickory Lake with a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 27 pounds, 2 ounces. For his victory, Boggs earned $4,257.
“I’m very familiar with the lake so I immediately targeted the areas where I’ve been catching them,” said Boggs who earned his second career win and 23rd top-10 finish in FLW competition. “There were a lot of boats around me and everyone was catching fish.”
Boggs said he targeted the backs of two creek arms near the middle section of the lake.
“I had a rough start to day one,” said Boggs. “I was losing fish early but still ended up with 13 pounds. I pitched a green-pumpkin-colored tube to wood and rocks and flipped a black and blue-colored jig to some docks. My pattern was unique because I was using a homemade lead weight on my plastics. It’s pretty innovative and has been a factor in my tournament performances.
“Day two I caught them the same way but was able to get a little more weight,” continued Boggs. “I was executing well and putting fish in the boat. The bite was tougher and the weights being brought in reflected that. It really came down to who had more experience on the water.”
Boggs said he caught approximately 22 keepers during the two-day competition.
“I had good-sized fish both days – they were all 2½ to 3-pounders,” said Boggs. “I didn’t really have any kickers but it ended up working out.”

1st:          Drew Boggs, Lebanon, Tenn., 10 bass, 27-2, $4,257
