STEVENS POINT, Wis. — The hundreds of collegiate anglers who competed in the 2015 season have been whittled down to just two as Trevor Lo of University of Minnesota and Josh Bensema of Texas A&M University advance to the final round of the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Classic Bracket.
Ever since his Minnesota team fished runner-up in the national championship Saturday on Lake DuBay, Lo has since brought in the biggest overall bag each day in the bracket-style format competition being held on the Wisconsin River Flowage. Lo’s catch worth 6 pounds, 2 ounces during Monday’s second round was enough to push him through to the final round, winning his matchup over Jake Whitaker of University of North Carolina-Charlotte. Like Lo, Whitaker brought in a three-fish limit, however his was only worth 5 pounds, 7 ounces.
“It’s been a grind out here,” Lo said. “I’m so glad to be here, and I’m blessed to have the support of my family and friends. I would have never guessed I would make it this far since this is my first year fishing college.”
Bensema, who won the 2015 Carhatt Bassmaster College Series National Championship Saturday with his teammate Matthew McArdle, brought in a three-bass limit weighing 5 pounds, 6 ounces Monday to defeat his second-round competitor, Tyler Rivet of Nicholls State University. Rivet fell short of the tournament limit, managing only two fish weighing 3 pounds, 9 ounces.
“I sure am glad I made it into the finals,” Bensema said. “It’s definitely tough out there, and I have my work cut out for me tomorrow. I haven’t brought in as much as Trevor has either day so far.”
Bensema will face off with Lo on Tuesday in what promises to be a nail-biter of a finale. At stake: a berth in the 2016 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro, to be held on Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees out of Tulsa, Okla.; a fully rigged Toyota Tundra; a sponsor-provided bass boat; entry fees for all nine of the 2016 Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Opens presented by Allstate; as well as $7,500 cash provided by Carhartt for expenses in the 2016 season.
The fishing this week is challenging, and every bite will count. Follow along with all the action on Bassmaster.com, or make your way out to Bukolt Park to see the action live as anglers leave the dock at 6 a.m. and return for weigh-in at 2:15 p.m. where one angler will move on to the Bassmaster Classic.

St. Croix Hits the Jackpot
St. Croix Hits the Jackpot
Progressive Avid Inshore ups the saltwater ante – redfish, trout and flounder expected to fold
Park Falls, WI (July 13 2015) – If the engineers at St. Croix Rod were professional card sharks, they’d be odds on favorites to win the World Series of Poker. Lady Luck needn’t apply when these guys get together to craft a series of rods, either.
“Winner, winner – chicken dinner!” The revamped Avid Inshore just hit the jackpot!
Call your species; the Avid Inshore has the deck stamped. The 22-model series includes spinning and casting models to win every saltwater competition. Tailing marsh redfish are no match; same goes for fluke running rips and stroking jigs. (Just exactly how do bottom-flopped flounder turn, accelerate and strike a lure? Amazing…) Stripers will struggle, drum look dumb and tarpon get taught respect as well.
Like all of St. Croix’s exceptional fishing tools, Avid Inshore fuses advanced components and rod-building technology with thoughtful craftsmanship. Betterment begins at the blank. The refreshed Avid Inshore is founded on an SCIII graphite blank – a blank born of St. Croix’s exclusive Integrated Poly Curve® (IPC®) tooling technology. The exclusive process yields continuous curve tapers, increased hoop strength and improved sensitivity. In short: These are the most sophisticated and best performing blanks in their class.
Raising the stakes, Avid Inshore features an enhanced guide platform with Kigan Master Hand Zero Tangle guides with solid-titanium frames for 100% protection from saltwater conditions. All thread wraps are protected by two coats of Flex Coat slow-cure finish as well.
Fuji® DPS reel seats with gunsmoke hoods deal a comfortable grip and solid foundation for casting reels. Avid Inshore spinning models sport trusted Fuji® ECS or TCS reel seats. Casting and spinning models double-down with super-grade cork handles tipped with corrosion-proof wind checks.
It’s fair to close with a note about cosmetics… St. Croix Rod has always been about stately, understated looks – leaving the “look at me, look at me” to brands built on ornamental value, not quality. This time around, St. Croix earns style-points, too. The Avid Inshore wears a thematic seafoam skin that looks the part strolling through any seaside town.
Designed and handcrafted in Park Falls, Wisconsin, the all-new Avid Inshore rods retail for $230 – $290, and come with a 15-year transferable warranty backed by St. Croix Superstar Service.

then the bass backed off to dropoffs around the 15′ range. The summer pattern is now here! Now you have to know how to fish deep!! That’s the key to success this time of year.
Jerry Marshburn & Tim Parker lit the July fireworks catching 5 weighing 28.18 lbs to take 1st Place, 1st Place TWT and 1st Place Big Fish (6.83 lbs.) for a total of $2,680! 2nd Place team was Dan Glossan & Phillip Eakes with 5 bass weighing 21.70 lbs. The 3rd Place Team of Britten O’Quinn & Jason Suggs netted 5 bass weighing 20.96 and won $515. 2nd Place Big Fish (6.70 lbs.) was caught by the team of David Wright & Scott Faulkner worth $270. 126 bass were brought to the scales for a total of 419 pounds averaging 3.33 lbs. each. Most were caught on
Carolina worm rigs, crankbait & jig combos in 15 feet of water on average.

New Baby Born with Missile Baits and More
Salem, Va. – July 13, 2015 – Missile Baits has a new baby with their all-new Baby D Stroyer. The new bait is a bite-sized version of the monster creature, the D Stroyer. The Baby version measures just under 5” long with the tails extended, which have natural action with the slightest movement. Being in a smaller size, the Baby D Stroyer is sure to be a necessity for almost every bass angler.
“The D Stroyer has taken off very quick and caught a bunch of big fish for me this year already so this Baby D Stroyer is going to be totally sick,” says pro angler and company owner, John Crews. “The Baby is going to be a bait that I use all the time and in a bunch of different ways because of it’s smaller size and natural action.”
The Baby D Stroyer will come with 10 baits in a pack for a suggested retail price of $4.99. The bite-sized creature bait will come in 8 colors: Green Pumpkin, GP3, Superbug, California Love, Candy Grass, Bruiser Flash, Watermelon Red, and Green Pumpkin Flash. Fishing techniques for the Baby D Stroyer include pitching, flipping, Carolina rigging, punching, or dragging on a wobble head jig. Shipping for the new bait is expected in late August.
Missile Baits is also releasing a brand new color called GP3, which stands for Green Pumpkin Purple Passion. It is a swirl color with green pumpkin and a purple pearl that has some translucence to it. GP3 will come in the D Bomb, D Stroyer, and the new Baby D Stroyer. Green Pumpkin Flash will also be added to the Baby D Bomb color selection. The new colors are expected to come in late August.
Missile Jigs is also adding 2 new colors to Ike’s Mini Flip. Softshell and Candy Grass will be added to the 3/8 and 1/2 ounce models. Softshell is a grey smoke color with some purple iridescence and the Candy Grass is a brown and green pumpkin with purple and green flakes, similar to the Candy Grass color in the Missile Baits line up. Mike Iaconelli requested these colors for competing on the BASS Elite Series. The new jig colors are expected to be in stock in November.

Final Four College Anglers To Compete For Classic Berth
[print_link]
STEVENS POINT, Wis. — Soon after Texas A&M University’s bass fishing team was crowned champions in the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops, the top finalists went back to work Sunday in a quest for another trophy.
The “Elite 8” anglers from the Top 4 teams competed as individuals in the first round of bracket format fishing for an invitation to compete in the 2016 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by Allstate.
Four survived their head-to-head matchups — coincidentally, one from each team.
Winning their bouts and moving on to Monday’s second round were Josh Bensema of Texas A&M, Jake Whitaker of UNC Charlotte, Trevor Lo of the University of Minnesota and Tyler Rivet from Nicholls State University.
For the Classic Bracket competition, the college anglers moved from Lake DuBay, site of the team championship, to the Wisconsin River Flowage. The change of scenery produced better fishing, as well; five of the eight anglers weighed in three-fish limits.
Following are results from the first bracket round.
Josh Bensema (Texas A&M), 5-7 vs. Andrew Helms (UNC Charlotte), 4-15
This was the closest matchup of the first round as both anglers brought three-fish limits to the scales. It pitted Josh Bensema of the 2015 National Champions against a member of the 2014 National Championship team, Andrew Helms of UNC Charlotte.
Bensema said he thought he would be eliminated after losing three good bass earlier in the day.
“My day started great, and I had a limit by 8:30 a.m.,” Bensema said. “I went looking for big fish after I had an early limit and I found them, but I lost every big fish I hooked. I lost three big fish and I figured I wouldn’t move on.”
Bensema will face Tyler Rivet from Nicholls State University in Round 2 on Monday.
Tyler Rivet (Nicholls State), 4-14 vs. Chris Burgan (Minnesota), 1-7
Tyler Rivet had the first limit of the day as the Louisiana angler capitalized on a morning bite that carried him into Monday’s semi-finals. Burgan searched for largemouth but couldn’t find any and had to settle for one keeper size smallmouth.
Rivet, who will fish against Bensema Monday, said he’s worried that his opponent had found bigger bass.
“Bensema said he was losing big fish so I’m definitely going to need better quality if I want to contend,” Rivet said. “Both of my best spots are morning areas so I need to choose wisely on where I go first.”
Jake Whitaker (UNC Charlotte), 6-13 vs. Matthew McArdle (Texas A&M), 3-15
Like the Bensema-Helms battle, this matchup pitted members of the 2014 ande 2015 championship teams. Jake Whitaker of UNC Charlotte was eliminated in the first round of bracket fishing last year, but he prevailed over Matthew McArdle of Texas A&M after weighing a 6-13 limit. McArdle lost a big bass with about an hour left in his day and believes that hurt his chances to advance.
Whitaker said he caught plenty of bass early Sunday, but most of them were too small to keep. “I didn’t have my limit until just after 10 a.m.,” he said. “I made a small adjustment and started to catch better quality fish later in the afternoon. I’m confident in my game plan heading into Monday’s semi-final.”
Whitaker opponent in the semifinal round will be Trevor Lo of the University of Minnesota.
Trevor Lo (Minnesota), 7-1 vs. Allyson Marcel (Nicholls State), 1-11
Lo brought one of the five limits to the scales and managed to eliminate Allyson Marcel, the first female angler to make the Classic Bracket. Marcel, competing for Nicholls State University of Louisiana, mustered up one bass weighing 1-11 on Sunday and was eliminated.
Bolstering Lo’s bag was a 3-pound, 2-ounce smallmouth, which also garnered the Carhartt Big Bass for the Classic Bracket segment.
“Today was basically my first day of practice on this lake for me,” Lo said. “I checked out Google Earth on Saturday night and tried to find areas that looked like they could hold fish and then I developed a pattern throughout the day.”
“It’s humbling to know that all the anglers who competed this week were the best in the nation,” he said. “Words can’t explain how I feel right now and there are so many emotions going through my mind.”
Lo takes on Whitaker for Monday’s semifinal round.
The final four anglers will take off from Bukolt Park at 6 a.m. Monday. Weigh-in will begin around 2:15 p.m. at Bukolt Park.
The Carhartt Big Bass award will be given to the individual angler who weighs the biggest bass during the Classic Bracket competition. For their efforts, a $500 Carhartt gift card will be awarded. Trevor Lo’s 3-2 smallmouth holds that mark heading into Monday’s competition.

Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Bracket Begins On The Wisconsin River Flowage
STEVENS POINT, Wis. — The team portion of the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops is complete, and Josh Bensema and Matthew McArdle will be bringing home the 2015 national championship trophy to Texas A&M University.

Texas A&M Claims College Series National Championship
Matthew McArdle (left) and Josh Bensema of Texas A&M University weighed in 3 pounds, 10 ounces Friday for a three-day total weight of 18 pounds, 4 ounces to take home the trophy in the 2015 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops held on Lake DuBay out of Stevens Point, Wis.
July 11, 2015
Texas A&M Claims College Series National Championship
STEVENS POINT, Wis. — On a tough final day Josh Bensema and Matthew McArdle of Texas A&M University needed only two bass weighing 3 pounds, 10 ounces to claim the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops.
The Aggies overcame a 6-ounce deficit and a 50-minute delay on Saturday morning to surpass the second-round leaders — Tyler Rivet and Allyson Marcel of Nicholls State University — and take home the biggest prize in college bass fishing.
“When we caught a keeper bass right away, we were very confident,” Bensema said of their fishing day. “To go almost the rest of the day with no fish was tough.” In fact, the pair’s only other bass was caught with only minutes of fishing time remaining.
“Catching that smallmouth with five minutes to go was important. Matt looked at me and said ‘I think you just caught the winning fish.’ It turns out I did.”
“I still feel like I’m dreaming,” Bensema said. “I’m sure it will hit me soon, but I’m trying to keep it in the back of my mind right now because I need to keep my focus aimed at the bracket.”
The champions will have little time to celebrate their team title. The Carhartt Bassmaster College Classic Bracket phase of the competition, which determines the lone Carhartt College Series qualifier for the 2016 GEICO Bassmaster Classic presented by GoPro, begins Sunday morning.
Members of the Top 4 teams will fish individually in head-to-head bracket competition over the next three days. The winner earns a berth in the Classic to be held in Tulsa, Okla., March 4-6.
Over the course of the national championship, Bensema and McArdle caught eight bass for a three-day total of 18-4. The majority of their fish came on a topwater frog, although a jig accounted for some keepers as well. Bass were biting best for the A&M anglers in the morning hours, which made the delayed start Saturday all the more painful for them.
Bensema did not have the proper paperwork for his boat insurance, a requirement under B.A.S.S. rules, and it took nearly an hour to meet that requirement.
“We got a little rattled this morning, and I made about 100 hundred phone calls,” McArdle said. “We just decided to keep our heads up and just go fishing because you fish much better when you don’t stress yourself out.”
The tough nature of this fishery and the pressure that Lake DuBay has received over the entire week culminated with only two of the five teams in the finals boating keeper bass on Saturday. The University of Minnesota, like Texas A&M, only boated two keepers and fell short of the title by 1 pound. Trevor Lo and Chris Burgan of Minnesota claimed second place after weighing 5 pounds, 8 ounces on Saturday and finishing with a three-day total of 17 pounds, 4 ounces.
The Friday leaders from Nicholls State University, Rivet and Marcel, didn’t catch a keeper bass on Saturday and dropped to third overall, but they still punched their ticket to fish in the Carhartt Bassmater College Series Classic Bracket. The pair boated six fish for 15 pounds over three days.
Rivet and Marcel won a $250 Bass Pro Shops gift card for winning the Bass Pro Shops/Nitro Big Bag award with an 8-pound, 7-ounce catch on Friday.
Minnesota’s Lo and Burgan claimed the Carhartt Big Bass award for a 3-13 smallmouth. They will receive a $500 Carhartt gift card.
Jake Whitaker and Andrew Helms from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte claimed the fourth and final spot in the Classic Bracket.
The University of Alabama squeezed into the 5th and final spot to fish on Saturday, but Frankie Appaluccio and Logan Shaddix weren’t able to weigh a bass on Saturday, leaving them in fifth and eliminating them from the Classic Bracket.
The first round of the College Series Classic Bracket begins on Sunday with takeoff at 6 a.m. CT from Bukolt Park (100 Bukolt Ave. Stevens Point, Wis 54481) with the weigh-in starting at 2:30 p.m. at Bukolt Park.
Local hosts for the events are the Stevens Point Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, Stevens Point Area Central Wisconsin Sports Commission, Tike Beach Bar and Grill, Travel Wisconsin and the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Dominant Dillow Slams The Door On Home State Northern Open Victory
Chris Dillow of Waynesboro, Va., wins the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Northern Open #1 presented by Allstate held on the James River out of Richmond, Va. Dillow brought 19 pounds, 2 ounces to Saturday’s weigh-in giving him a three-day total weight of 50-12.

Dominant Dillow Slams The Door On Home State Northern Open Victory

RICHMOND, Va. — Chris Dillow couldn’t match the 20-pound bag that Boyd Duckett brought to the scales on the first day of this year’s Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Northern Open #1, but he never faltered. Dillow caught 19 pounds, 2 ounces of James River bass Saturday to bring his three-day total to 50-12, enabling him to defeat his closest challenger by a margin of more than 9 pounds.
The victory earned him a Nitro Z9 bass boat and tandem Nitro trailer rigged with a Mercury 225 Pro XS valued at $45,000.
While the majority of the field made long runs and burned dozens of gallons of gas each day, Dillow stayed close, never venturing past the mouth of the Appomattox River tributary. He maximized his fishing time and generally avoided the crowds. Similarly, while others rued the increasingly undesirable and unpredictable tidal flows, Dillow was glad the water was higher than normal for longer than normal.
“I like high tide,” he said. “I like that security over my fish. When it gets too low, they tend to get spooky.”
The realtor from nearby Waynesboro, Va., relied on a jig of his own making — the Dillow’s Perfect Jig — as well as a Strike King DB Structure jig to pluck his fish from a variety of hard cover, including rocks, wood and several sets of old pilings.
“It’s a milk run that I fish all the time,” Dillow added. Included in that series of stops were “one or two community holes” that enabled him to fill out a limit and then push forward in search of kickers.
He fished the jigs on a 7-foot, 11-inch G.Loomis GLX flipping stick paired with an 8:1 Lew’s Speed Spool baitcasting reel spooled with 20-pound-test Seaguar Invizx fluorocarbon.
Duckett’s unheard-of 20-4 limit on Thursday had Dillow in second place, but even Dillow’s subpar 12-13 on Friday allowed him to claim a lead that he wouldn’t relinquish. Duckett was not able to amass a double digit catch either the second or third day.
After falling to second on Friday, Duckett ended the tournament in 12th place. Like many others, he was a victim of a tide that didn’t go out according to the tide charts, and then a decreased amount of “good low tide” on the short final day of competition.
As Duckett and others like Dave Lefebre struggled to match their heavy first-day catches, Ohio pro Michael Simonton remained exceptionally consistent over the course of the three days. The former Elite Series angler turned in catches of 14-14, 13-10 and 12-11 to finish second with a three-day total of 41-3. He relied primarily on a black Spro frog, but only had a limited period of time to produce his fish.
“The first hour when we started fishing was game time,” Simonton said. “It was fast and furious and awesome. Today, I stayed in my primary area and never left. I’m not sure why it was so good. There was a boat ramp nearby, and I was skipping the frog to laydowns and under overhanging trees.”
Adrian Avena of Vineland, N.J., finished third with 36-3. Like Simonton, he was consistent, producing limits that weighed 12-10, 12-9 and 11-0, but was unable to consistently catch the larger fish that Dillow corralled. He credited his New Jersey upbringing with teaching him how the fish relate to tidal movement, but noted that he couldn’t capitalize on unfavorable tides.
“The tide was coming in most of the day,” Avena said. “That didn’t matter on my starting place, but after that it was pretty much a grind.” He used a “power drop shot,” a finesse worm and a 1/2-ounce Zorro buzzbait to put together his limits.
In past Northern Opens on the James River, most of the leaders amassed their catches in the Chickahominy River, a 45-minute run from the Osborne Landing launch site. This week the “Chick” once again saw plenty of boat traffic, but it didn’t produce the best catches.
Nick Angiulo of Hainesport, N.J., won the co-angler division with three three-fish limits that totaled 21-3. Greg Mauldin of Archdale, N.C., was second with 20-15, and Lou Britos was third with 19-12.
Angiulo claimed the co-angler trophy and won a Triton 179 TrX paired with a Mercury 115 Pro XS valued at $30,000.
Dillow’s second-day leadership earned him the $250 Livingston Lures Leader Award. Britos captured the same title among co-anglers, pocketing a $250 Livingston Lure Pack.
Chris Flint of Potsdam, N.Y., won the Allstate Good Hands, Great Day of $250 for moving from 136th place to 52nd after Day 2. Among co-anglers, Matt Madlener of Illinois moved from 125th to 10th to garner $150 from Allstate.
Avena won the A.R.E. Top Angler prize of $500.
Texas pro Trait Crist landed the Bass Pro Shops Big Bass of the tournament, an 8-pound largemouth that ate her finesse worm on Day 2, earning her $750. Britos won the same award on the co-angler side by virtue of a 7-2 bass that he caught on Day 1, earning him an additional $250.
