Weese Wins Divisional On Monongahela

[print_link]

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Brad Weese used a rarely exploited river fishing tactic to win the Old Milwaukee B.A.S.S. Nation Mid-Atlantic Divisional on the Monongahela River Friday.

In three days of undeniably some of the toughest fishing in divisional history, the West Virginian caught 19 pounds, 1 ounce to win the three-day event with 10 bass total.

His tactic focused on man-made current generated by the water release from navigational locks. Much of the tournament field of 78 anglers sharing boats locked upstream on the Monongahela into other fisheries. Not Weese, who intentionally remained within range of the discharge creating current in his area.

“That’s why I had such a good bite in the early morning,” said Weese, who fished for the Maryland B.A.S.S. Nation as a member of its the Garrett Bassers.

“It’s a long run into both pools so everyone was headed up there early.”

The current generated by the emptying of the 10,000-gallon lock chambers from either dam provided just enough moving water for his pattern. The bite went cold when the water returned to calm conditions.

In another wise move, Reese chose one lure capable of covering lots of water and quickly. The single bait enabled him to focus on one technique, instead of spending costly time changing lures and modifying presentations for the area.

His choice was a custom-made spinnerbait made by local acquaintance Brent Dodrill. The 1/4-ounce lure has a white skirt and head with twin gold Colorado blades.

“The presentation wasn’t anything special,” he said. “I slow -rolled the spinnerbait anywhere from 6 inches to 10 feet.”

In simple terms, Weese dictated his casts and retrieve based on the shoreline features. Casting targets included isolated laydowns and stretches with concentrations of wood on the bank.

“The key was keeping the bait in the water and not spending time running the river,” he added.

Weese spent most of the tournament in the same area:, a boat ramp he defined as a community hole. However, the appeal of making long runs by most of the tournament field left the area open to Weese.

The win was made sweeter for Weese because Maryland won the competition between the six states. Maryland finished with 88 pounds, 2 ounces, with Virginia taking second place with 74-9. New Jersey placed third with 63-6, and West Virginia took fourth with 62-7. Pennsylvania claimed fifth place with 57-14, and Delaware finished with 46-4 for sixth place. Scores were totaled based on the cumulative weight caught by each 14-angler team.

For the win, Maryland received a Skeeter/Yamaha boat, motor, trailer and accessories package valued at $33,340.

Jacob Jones and Austin Gaab of the Susquehanna Valley Fishing Club in Pennsylvania won the high school division. High school state champions fished for the final two days in the tournament under a model program that introduces students to tournament fishing at a higher level.

Weese will go to the B.A.S.S. Nation Championship in November as the top angler from Maryland. Advancing with him is Fabian Rodriguez of Delaware; Michael McMahon of New Jersey; Chad Shutty of Pennsylvania; Brian Harold of Virginia; and Sammy Bounds of West Virginia.

Anglers earned the following sponsorship contingency awards:. Livingston Lures Leader Award: Weese earned the $250 award by leading the tournament on Day 2 with 13-7.

A.R.E. Truck Caps Top Angler Award: Chad Brinegar earned the $250 as the top-finishing angler using the brand’s truck caps.

Chad Craven & Ben Cannon Win Piedmont BASS Classic $10,000 Spring Team Bass Trail Championship June 13th 2015

PIEDMONT BASS CLASSICS $10,000 SPRING TEAM BASS TRAIL
CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS
Saturday June 13th, 2015 ~ Falls Lake ~ Ledge Rock Wildlife Ramp

Another beautiful & very very hot day for the PBC Spring Championship at Falls Lake. Temps in the am were  around 79 and up to about 99 in the afternoon. The wind today was mostly light and water temps averaged 87.  Most of the 72 qualified teams that placed in the money said the bite was fairly deep with some coming from water  up to 12 feet deep on channel dropoffs.

Chad Craven & Ben Cannon took 1st Place with 5 bass weighing a whopping 29.40 lbs., 2nd Place Big Fish (7.47 lbs.) along with 1st Place in the TWT and took home just over $11,957. Points Winners for the Spring Trail,
Jaime Fajardo & Josh Hooks, took home $1,000 in cash & prizes. The 2nd Place team of Jerry Marshburn and  Chuck Byrd were just .97 of a pound from winning the big money but did ok taking 2nd place, 1st Place Big Fish
(7.50 lbs.) and 2nd Place TWT for a total of $2,978. 3rd Place went to the husband/wife team or Eric & Jennifer  Christian with 5 bass weighing 27.86 lbs. giving them $810 in cash!

245 fish were weighed in for a total of 917 pounds for an average of 3.74 lbs. each. The bite was really good with  most all of the teams catching some bass. We had 16 teams with 21+ lb. sacks. Most of the fish were caught on
crankbaits and worm & jig rigs in deeper water off points and channel dropoffs.

Many thanks go out to Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Durham for again providing a great cookout and message  after the weighin. They have really supported our events in the past and all our anglers and staff thank them as well
as all our super sponsors with all our hearts!

This was our final Spring event for 2015 and I again want to thank all the anglers that participated and all our  sponsors that support this trail. It was a great success again this year and with our new title sponsor for 2016 it
should be better than ever!!!

Coming up July 11th at Falls Lake we will be starting the Cashion Fishing Rods ‘End of Year’ Trail out of Ledge  Rock Wildlife Ramp. All the information on our tournaments can be found http://piedmontbassclassics.com/

Maryland’s Brad Weese Takes Lead On Monongahela

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Brad Weese has a 3-pound lead going into the final day of competition at the Old Milwaukee B.A.S.S. Nation Mid-Atlantic Divisional.

Anywhere else but the Monongahela River makes it a shaky lead at best. Thursday, the Maryland angler added 9 pounds, 7 ounces to his overall weight equaling 13-7.

Friday, Weese merely needs to repeat today’s performance to possibly win the tournament. That won’t be easy to do. Mark Garner, Wednesday’s leader with 6-11, caught nothing today and dropped to 11th place.

“I’m not sure that I can do this again tomorrow,” Weese acknowledged. “I’m not that confident based on the water conditions.”

Those are just as unpredictable as the leaderboard. The water is getting muddier and higher from the influx of locally heavy rainfall along the river system. The bass also seem to be slow at catching up to those changing conditions.

“I’m only spending 10 minutes on a spot,” Weese said. “For me, it’s all about covering water.”

With the run-and-gun approach Weese is using two lure types that he understandably declined to mention.

Weese confirmed rising water that shut down unexpectedly in his areas might have impacted his fishing.

“Some current is good but nothing at all stops the bite,” he said.

Weese already has an award to take home, win or lose. As Day 2 leader he won the Livingston Lures Leader Award valued at $250.

The tournament box scores demonstrate just how tough is the fishing. Thursday, only two limits of five bass crossed the scales, besting yesterday’s count of one limit. Thus far, Mark Garner has the biggest bass of the tournament weighing 4-9.

Winning the overall tournament is only one of several goals. Another high honor is qualifying for bass club angling’s premier event. The highest finishing angler from each of six competing states advances to the 2015 Old Milwaukee B.A.S.S. Nation Championship Nov. 5-7 on the Ouachita River out of Monroe, La.

Another goal in this tournament is finishing atop the six state teams in the competition. Leading that race is Maryland with 61 pounds, 2 ounces. Virginia is next with 57-10, and West Virginia holds down third place with 51-13. Pennsylvania is fourth with 44-1, while New Jersey is fifth with 41-5. Delaware is in sixth place with 28-1.

The winning state team will take home a Skeeter/Yamaha boat, motor, trailer and accessories package valued at $33,340.

The state scores get a boost with the weights caught by two-angler high school teams. Each state sent its state champions to hone their tournament skills at a higher level. Currently, the top high school team is Jacob Jones and Austin Gaab from Montoursville, Pa., with 4 pounds, 9 ounces.

PADGETT LEADS WALMART BFL ALL-AMERICAN TOURNAMENT ON KENTUCKY LAKE

PADGETT LEADS WALMART BFL ALL-AMERICAN TOURNAMENT ON KENTUCKY LAKE
Arkansas’ Gross paces co-anglers
 [print_link]
BUCHANAN, Tenn. (June 18, 2015) – Bobby Padgett of LaGrange, Georgia, took the early lead at the Walmart BFL All-American on Kentucky Lake with a five-bass limit weighing 27 pounds, 13 ounces. Padgett will begin day two of the three-day competition with a 3-pound lead over second-place angler Curtis Richardson of Belleville, Ontario, Canada, who weighed in five bass totaling 24 pounds, 13 ounces.
“It feels great to be leading on day one but it would feel even better to be leading on day three,” said Padgett, who has accumulated 20 top-10 finishes in FLW competition. “I just have to go out there and grind it out again tomorrow.”
Padgett said he spent his morning targeting secondary points, flats and small kick-outs in mid-lake areas between Paris Landing and Moors Marina.
“The bass are active along the secondary stuff because they’re pulling so much current,” said Padgett. “I used a Carolina-rigged Red Bug-colored Zoom Ol’ Monster Worm and caught a decent limit by 10 a.m.
Around 10:45, Padgett said he ran to a different location and reeled in a 7½-pounder using the Red Bug-colored Zoom Ol’ Monster Worm, this time Texas-rigged.
“It was near a barge that I had found in the river channel. It was 40 feet down and rose up to about 17 feet,” Padgett said.
To finish out his day, the Georgia angler targeted fish that were fired up from thunderstorms that had passed through over lunchtime.
“I hit three places in 40 minutes and culled out three 3¾-pounders with 5-pounders,” Padgett said. “I gained about four pounds in an hour using a Two Timer-colored Profound Outdoors Crankbait.”
Padgett said he ended up catching about 25 keepers by the end of the day.
“Most of the fish came between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.,” said Padgett. “Tomorrow I’m going to stick to a similar pattern but focus more on the spots where I caught my biggest fish.”

Fans will also be treated to the FLW Expo at Walmart in Paris on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. The Expo includes Ranger boat simulators, the opportunity to interact with competing anglers, enjoy interactive games, activities and giveaways provided by sponsors and learn more about the sport of fishing and other outdoor activities. All activities are free and open to the public.
The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 120 tournaments throughout the season, five in each division. The top 40 boaters and co-anglers from each division qualify for a regional championship and compete to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the Walmart BFL All-American. Top anglers in the BFL can move up to the Rayovac FLW Series or even the Walmart FLW Tour.
Coverage of the 2015 BFL All-American on Kentucky Lake will be broadcast in high-definition (HD) on NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) November 29 from 7 p.m.-8 p.m. EDT when Season 20 of “FLW” returns this fall. The Emmy-nominated “FLW” television show airs on NBCSN, the Pursuit Channel and the World Fishing Network and is broadcast to more than 564 million households worldwide, making it the most widely distributed weekly outdoors-sports television show in the world.

QUINCY MAN WINS $5,000 PLAYING FLW FANTASY FISHING

QUINCY MAN WINS $5,000 PLAYING FLW FANTASY FISHING
MINNEAPOLIS (June 18, 2015) – Jim Shunamon of Quincy, Massachusetts, correctly picked three of the top 10 anglers in last week’s Walmart FLW Tour event on Lake Chickamauga presented by Igloo Coolers. For his picks, Shunamon won $5,000 by playing FLW Fantasy Fishing, held in conjunction with the FLW Tour fishing tournament.
“I was very surprised when I found out I won,” said Shunamon. “It’s not every day you’re rewarded with this kind of money for playing a Fantasy game.”
In order to choose his team, Shunamon said he studied Lake Chickamauga’s conditions and compared the angler’s skillsets using FLW’s Fantasy Fishing tools.
“I went back and forth for about a week trying to decide who I was going to round off my team with,” said Shunamon. “I really looked at seasonal conditions and how certain anglers performed in those conditions. I’ll be honest, some picks were blind guesses, but for the most part I had specific reasons for why I picked who I did.
“With the salary cap, you really need to think critically about past statistics on that particular body of water,” continued Shunamon. “For me, the salary cap is what makes playing FLW Fantasy Fishing both fun and interesting. Without it, I’m sure I’d have the same team every tournament.”
When asked if he had any plans for the prize money, Shunamon said he could use a new computer as well as some more fishing gear.
“When you’re blessed with a surprise like this a little upgrading never hurts,” Shunamon said. “Now I need to figure out who I’m picking for my team at the Potomac River.”
Finishing in second place on the fantasy side for the Lake Chickamauga event was Mike Neff of Owingsville, Kentucky, who won $1,000, and in third place was Jacob Sessums of Duncan, Oklahoma, who won $500. Several other winners from across the globe took home prizes including cash, ShopFLW gift cards, hats and baits.
The 2015 Fantasy Fishing season consists of seven tournaments surrounding the Walmart FLW Tour regular season as well as the season-ending Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of bass fishing. Fans compete for more than $7,000 in cash and prizes from each of the six tournaments and a top prize of $5,000. The cumulative grand prize for the highest ranked player at the end of the season is $10,000.
To begin playing, visit FantasyFishing.com and sign up. Select a team of 10 anglers against an allocated $200 salary cap and select your guess for the tournament winning weight as a tiebreaker. Create a league to play against your friends and compete for bragging rights. Player’s modifications to their teams must be finalized by 11:59 p.m. ET the night prior to the tournament.

Toledo Bend Reservoir Leads Bassmaster’s 100 Best Bass Lakes List

Bassmaster Magazine has released the 2015 rankings for the 100 Best Bass Lakes in America, and Toldeo Bend Reservoir has been named the No. 1 fishery in the country.

Toledo Bend Reservoir Leads Bassmaster’s 100 Best Bass Lakes List

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The results have been tabulated after several months of research and the 2015 rankings for the 100 Best Bass Lakes in America have been revealed. For the first time since the inaugural rankings in 2012 when Falcon Lake in Texas was No. 1, a southern fishery has claimed the title of best lake in the country. Texas again gets the claim to fame, but has to share the national spotlight with Louisiana, as Toledo Bend Reservoir, named king of all bass fisheries for 2015, straddles the border of the two states.

“The rankings this year are more reliable than ever,” said Bassmaster Magazine Editor James Hall. “The past three years, we released the list in May. However, we waited to include it in our July/August issue so we could collect catch-rate data from the spring to evaluate the health and productivity of each fishery.”

For anglers looking for a current bucket list of bass fishing destinations, this is one-stop shopping.

The rankings were created by first polling the fishery agencies of each state to produce a current list of bass-rich waters. Next, the B.A.S.S. Nation was employed to chime in on the best fisheries they compete on across the country. All 630,000 B.A.S.S. Facebook fans were polled to make sure non-tournament lakes were considered, and then the B.A.S.S. Council, a 3,500-member panel of super-avid bass fishermen, helped put the lakes in order. Finally, after scouring tournament data from hundreds of bass fishing clubs and tournament organizers, the rankings were finalized by a 15-member blue-ribbon panel from the fishing industry.

“Although many rankings on the list required a lot of debate from our panel, Toledo Bend stood out to all as a clear No. 1 this year,” Hall said. “The 185,000-acre impoundment has never fallen below No. 15 in the rankings, and between May 2014 and April 2015, 79 bass over 10 pounds were certified. Plus, it typically takes more than 25 pounds to win a one-day event — sometimes more than 30 pounds.”

Last year’s No. 1 fishery, Lake Michigan’s Sturgeon Bay, dropped to No. 2. The No. 1 fishery from 2013, Michigan’s Lake St. Clair, took the No. 3 spot. The remainder of the Top 5, in order, are the California Delta and Sam Rayburn Reservoir in Texas.

“Although you’ll see a lot of the ‘usual suspects’ on the list this year, there are some historically great fisheries that didn’t make the cut,” Hall said. “California’s Lake Oroville, once one of the best spotted bass fisheries in the nation, is still suffering from a long drought, as is the typically strong O.H. Ivie Reservoir in Texas.”

Perhaps the most interesting part of the rankings has to do with fisheries that made the list for the first time.

“Brownlee Reservoir (ranked 59th) on the Idaho/Oregon border breached the Best 100 list based on the tremendous smallmouth being caught this year,” Hall said. “It took more than 28 pounds to win a March event there, and the big fish weighed almost 7 pounds. However, Louisiana’s Lake Bistineau (ranked 27th) had the most impressive debut in the history of the rankings, on the heels of a 34.09-pound limit weighed in this past spring. A 10.9 took big-fish honors and the average bass weighed in was 3.69 pounds. ”

Texas earns bragging rights with the most lakes ranked within Bassmaster’s 100 Best with a total of nine lakes. California and New York each may boast of six fisheries that made the cut; Michigan has eight on the list. For a complete listing of Bassmaster’s 100 Best Bass Lakes, see the July/August issue of Bassmaster, or visit Bassmaster.com.

West Virginia’s Mark Garner Leads Divisional On Monongahela

West Virginia’s Mark Garner Leads Divisional On Monongahela

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — The water level has everything to do with the leader Mark Garner’s strategy at the Old Milwaukee B.A.S.S. Nation Mid-Atlantic Divisional.

That’s not surprising because the tournament is on the Monongahela River, where success hinges on the rise and fall of the current.

Wednesday, Garner caught only three bass, or two shy of a full tournament limit. His catch weighed 6 pounds, 11 ounces. The small catch is attributed to environmental factors called out by Garner, who is a skilled river angler.

Tropical Depression Bill is flooding Texas, while the system is slinging rain bands as far northeast as West Virginia.

“The storm will affect us in one of two ways,” the West Virginian said. “Either we’ll get too much water or just the right amount.”

He added, “If it changes too quickly, the fish won’t have time to react to the change.”

Garner wants what he describes as the first scenario — a gradual runoff of rainfall into the river. That, he says, will move the fish nearer the shoreline. They will be easier casting targets along the cover.

The second scenario might make the already challenging fishing even worse. Too much rain could force the release of water from Tygart Dam, which flows into the tournament waters on the Monongahela River.

“That water will be very cold and muddy up the river,” he said. “Both conditions combined could shut down the fish.”

It’s too early to know which prediction will happen because of the uncertainty of the storm. A high probability of rain is in the forecast through the conclusion of the tournament on Friday.

Behind Garner is West Virginian Chad Brinegar with 5-12. Pennsylvania’s Daniel Gray is third with 5-11, and J.J. Dickens of West Virginia is fourth with 5-8. Richard Svoboda of Maryland is fifth with 5-7.

Winning the overall tournament is only one of several goals. The highest finishing angler from each of the six competing states will advance to the 2015 Old Milwaukee B.A.S.S. Nation Championship scheduled for Nov. 5-7 on the Ouachita River out of Monroe, La.

Virginia leads the state standings with a cumulative weight of 33 pounds, 12 ounces. Maryland is second with 32-11, and West Virginia is third with 27-15.

The winning state team is awarded a Skeeter/Yamaha boat, motor, trailer and accessories package valued at $33,340.

Another competitive element will come into play on Thursday, when state championship high school teams will compete alongside the adults to hone their skills at the higher level. Their cumulative weight will be added to the overall score of the state team.

LA CROSSE, Wis. (June 15, 2015) – Joe Pollak of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 15 pounds, 3 ounces Saturday to win the third Walmart Bass Fishing League Great Lakes Division tournament of 2015 on the Mississippi River. For his victory, Pollak earned $4,498.
“Winning a tournament like this is a nice reward for the many hours spent in practice and preparation,” said Pollak of his first career win. “I’m very excited to see what the future holds for me in BFL competition.”
Pollak said he started his day by making a run to Pool No. 9. There, he used a bluegill-colored Dirty Jigs Swim Jig with a green-pumpkin craw to catch his fish.
“I knew I needed to target clear water because that’s where the bass were congregating,” said Pollak. “They were also feeding heavily on bluegills in two-foot depths, so I figured my presentation would clean up well.”
After a few hours, Pollak said he pieced together a small limit after a couple of passes through the area.
“Around 11 o’ clock I caught one more keeper and culled,” Pollak said. “It was slow until about 20 minutes before check-in when I caught a 3½-pounder. I felt good about my limit at that point.”

The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 120 tournaments throughout the season, five in each division. The top 50 boaters and co-anglers from each division qualify for a regional tournament and compete to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the Walmart BFL All-American. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the Rayovac FLW Series or even the Walmart FLW Tour.
