FAIRMONT, W.Va. — The water level has everything to do with the leader Mark Garner’s strategy at the Old Milwaukee B.A.S.S. Nation Mid-Atlantic Divisional.

That’s not surprising because the tournament is on the Monongahela River, where success hinges on the rise and fall of the current.

Wednesday, Garner caught only three bass, or two shy of a full tournament limit. His catch weighed 6 pounds, 11 ounces. The small catch is attributed to environmental factors called out by Garner, who is a skilled river angler.

Tropical Depression Bill is flooding Texas, while the system is slinging rain bands as far northeast as West Virginia.

“The storm will affect us in one of two ways,” the West Virginian said. “Either we’ll get too much water or just the right amount.”

He added, “If it changes too quickly, the fish won’t have time to react to the change.”

Garner wants what he describes as the first scenario — a gradual runoff of rainfall into the river. That, he says, will move the fish nearer the shoreline. They will be easier casting targets along the cover.

The second scenario might make the already challenging fishing even worse. Too much rain could force the release of water from Tygart Dam, which flows into the tournament waters on the Monongahela River.

“That water will be very cold and muddy up the river,” he said. “Both conditions combined could shut down the fish.”

It’s too early to know which prediction will happen because of the uncertainty of the storm. A high probability of rain is in the forecast through the conclusion of the tournament on Friday.

Behind Garner is West Virginian Chad Brinegar with 5-12. Pennsylvania’s Daniel Gray is third with 5-11, and J.J. Dickens of West Virginia is fourth with 5-8. Richard Svoboda of Maryland is fifth with 5-7.

Winning the overall tournament is only one of several goals. The highest finishing angler from each of the six competing states will advance to the 2015 Old Milwaukee B.A.S.S. Nation Championship scheduled for Nov. 5-7 on the Ouachita River out of Monroe, La.

Virginia leads the state standings with a cumulative weight of 33 pounds, 12 ounces. Maryland is second with 32-11, and West Virginia is third with 27-15.

The winning state team is awarded a Skeeter/Yamaha boat, motor, trailer and accessories package valued at $33,340.

Another competitive element will come into play on Thursday, when state championship high school teams will compete alongside the adults to hone their skills at the higher level. Their cumulative weight will be added to the overall score of the state team.

LA CROSSE, Wis. (June 15, 2015) – Joe Pollak of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 15 pounds, 3 ounces Saturday to win the third Walmart Bass Fishing League Great Lakes Division tournament of 2015 on the Mississippi River. For his victory, Pollak earned $4,498.
“Winning a tournament like this is a nice reward for the many hours spent in practice and preparation,” said Pollak of his first career win. “I’m very excited to see what the future holds for me in BFL competition.”
Pollak said he started his day by making a run to Pool No. 9. There, he used a bluegill-colored Dirty Jigs Swim Jig with a green-pumpkin craw to catch his fish.
“I knew I needed to target clear water because that’s where the bass were congregating,” said Pollak. “They were also feeding heavily on bluegills in two-foot depths, so I figured my presentation would clean up well.”
After a few hours, Pollak said he pieced together a small limit after a couple of passes through the area.
“Around 11 o’ clock I caught one more keeper and culled,” Pollak said. “It was slow until about 20 minutes before check-in when I caught a 3½-pounder. I felt good about my limit at that point.”
The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:
1st:          Joe Pollak, Lake Geneva, Wis., five bass, 15-3, $4,498
2nd:         Travis Brueggen, Cashton, Wis., five bass, 14-15, $2,249

The top 50 boaters and 50 co-anglers based on point standings will qualify for the Oct. 15-17 Regional Championship on Kentucky Lake in Gilbertsville, Kentucky. Boaters will compete for a top award of a Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard and $20,000, while co-anglers will fish for a new Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard.
The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 120 tournaments throughout the season, five in each division. The top 50 boaters and co-anglers from each division qualify for a regional tournament and compete to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the Walmart BFL All-American. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the Rayovac FLW Series or even the Walmart FLW Tour.

SALISBURY, N.C. (June 15, 2015) – Robert Barrett of Youngsville, North Carolina, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 19 pounds, 5 ounces Saturday to win the third Walmart Bass Fishing League Piedmont Division tournament of 2015 on High Rock Lake. For his victory, Barrett earned $4,806.
“I fished a sandy spot about 1000 feet from the takeoff ramp,” Barrett said. “The bass were feeding on shad in a small pocket along a bank. I used a ¼-ounce custom green-pumpkin shaky-head rig with a South Africa Special-colored Zoom Worm to catch my fish. I had my winning stringer completed by 8:30 a.m.
“The flat I targeted was in 14 to 16 feet of water,” continued Barrett. “I had done well in there in practice, so I knew that’s where I needed to be.”
Barrett said he caught approximately 11 keepers over the course of his day.

CAMDEN, Tenn. (June 15, 2015) – Edward Gettys of Columbia, Tennessee, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 20 pounds, 4 ounces Saturday to win the third Walmart Bass Fishing League Music City Division tournament of 2015 on Kentucky Lake. For his victory, Gettys earned $4,601.
“It was another great day of Kentucky Lake fishing,” said Gettys, who has eight career wins in FLW competition. “I was able to dial in on the bite early and fish my area how I wanted.”
Gettys said he built his winning stringer by focusing on 12-foot deep ledges near Paris Landing.
“I caught my first fish at 7 a.m. and my two biggest around 10:30,” Gettys said. “The stretch that I targeted was small. The bass were in a very specific spot. I used a Carolina-rigged plum-colored Berkley Power Worm all day. I would just drag it slow near the bottom, that’s where they seemed to like it.”
Getty said every fish he brought to the scale came from that location.
The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:
1st:          Edward Gettys, Columbia, Tenn., five bass, 20-4, $2,601 + $2,000 Ranger Cup Bonus

WALMART FLW TOUR REGULAR-SEASON FINALE SET FOR POTOMAC RIVER

WALMART FLW TOUR REGULAR-SEASON FINALE SET FOR POTOMAC RIVER

 [print_link]

MARBURY, Md. (June 15, 2015) – The sixth and final regular-season tournament of the 20th anniversary season of the Walmart FLW Tour, the most competitive Tour in professional bass-fishing, kicks off June 25-28 with the Walmart FLW Tour at the Potomac River presented by Ranger Boats. Hosted by the Charles County Board of Commissioners, the tournament will feature 148 of the world’s best bass-fishing professionals and co-anglers casting for top awards of up to $125,000 cash in the pro division and up to $25,000 cash in the co-angler division.

One angler who is really looking forward to the final stop of the season is Walmart pro David Dudley of Lynchburg, Virginia. The 2003 Forrest Wood Cup champion has finished in 3rd– and 7th-place in the FLW Tour’s last two visits to the tidal fishery, and looks to be well on his way to qualifying for the 17th Forrest Wood Cup appearance of his career.
“The key to winning this tournament will be getting a couple of the right bites every day,” said Dudley, a three-time Angler of the Year winner. “The Potomac doesn’t have 8- or 10-pounders like Chickamauga or Okeechobee, but there are some solid 5-pounders and getting those fish in the boat will be crucial in this event.
“Despite being a river, the Potomac fishes very similarly to Lake Okeechobee,” Dudley continued. “There will be six or seven good areas that hold a lot of grass, and competitors are going to be ganged up in those areas. You just have to put your blinders on and work your way in to get amongst the other boats.”
Dudley said that the Potomac was currently fishing “a little off,” so he expects the weights to be slightly lower than when the FLW Tour last visited in 2012.
“We’re going to have to work hard to catch a five-bass limit there,” Dudley said. “There are three main patterns that most of the anglers will be fishing – flipping, frogging and fishing a ChatterBait. That is how this tournament will be won.”
Dudley said that a 15-pound limit on the Potomac River is solid, but predicted that the leader would need to average 18½ pounds each day.
“I’m going to say that the winner of this event will have a four-day cumulative total of 74 pounds.”
In FLW Tour competition, anglers are also vying for valuable points in hopes of qualifying for the 2015 Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of bass fishing. The 2015 Forrest Wood Cup will be in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Aug. 20-23 on Lake Ouachita and is hosted by Visit Hot Springs. The Forrest Wood Cup Champion could win as much as $500,000 – professional bass-fishing’s richest prize.
Anglers will take off from Smallwood State Park located at 2750 Sweden Point Road in Marbury at 6:30 a.m. EDT each day of competition. Thursday and Friday’s weigh-ins will be held at the State Park beginning at 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday’s final weigh-ins will be held at Walmart, located at 40 Drury Drive in La Plata, Maryland, beginning at 4 p.m.
Fans will also be treated to the FLW Expo on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. at Walmart in La Plata prior to the final weigh-ins. The Expo includes a Ranger boat simulator, the opportunity to interact with professional anglers, enjoy interactive games, activities and giveaways provided by sponsors, and learn more about the sport of fishing and other outdoor activities. All activities are free and open to the public. Pros Rich Dalbey and Todd Hollowell’s “Hooked on Helping” foundation will be hosting a food drive to benefit a local food bank. FLW fans who donate five or more cans of food will be entered to win a $50 Walmart gift card.
Coverage of the Potomac River tournament will be broadcast in high-definition (HD) on NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) November 2 from 7 p.m.-8 p.m. EDT when Season 20 of “FLW” returns this fall. The Emmy-nominated “FLW” television show airs on NBCSN, the Pursuit Channel and the World Fishing Network and is broadcast to more than 564 million households worldwide, making it the most widely distributed weekly outdoors-sports television show in the world.

B.A.S.S. To Participate In Outdoor Adventure Day, Adventures NYC

B.A.S.S. To Participate In Outdoor Adventure Day, Adventures NYC

NEW YORK — B.A.S.S. is hoping to hook thousands of youngsters and their families on fishing through the annual Adventures NYC presented by NYC Parks outdoors festival in Central Park June 20.

The one-day event — billed as the nation’s largest outdoor celebration — is expected to attract 30,000 New York City residents to Central Park. In addition to activities ranging from log-rolling to kayaking, those attending Adventures NYC will get a taste of bass fishing, courtesy of B.A.S.S. and Bassmaster Elite Series pros Michael Iaconelli and Matt Lee.

“It’s so important to encourage participation in the outdoors at a young age, and we’re proud to be a part of this special day,” said Bruce Akin, B.A.S.S. CEO. “Participating in Adventures NYC gives B.A.S.S. a one-of-a-kind opportunity to expand our platform on youth fishing in an urban market.”

Iaconelli, a bass fishing superstar from nearby Pittsgrove, N.J., and Lee of Guntersville, Ala., a Bassmaster Classic qualifier through the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series who is now a rookie on the Elite Series, will conduct casting demonstrations and teach fishing techniques at the outdoors festival.

“We’re looking forward to spending a day in Central Park sharing what we love about our sport,” Lee said. “When I was in high school, it wasn’t cool to fish. Now, there are so many younger kids fishing and so many opportunities to become involved in the sport.

“Adventures NYC is a great way to encourage kids and parents to spend time in the outdoors. If it weren’t for an event like this, they might never be exposed to fishing.”

With their Elite Series bass boats in tow, the pros will be onsite to give casting demonstrations, teach their tricks and techniques and sign autographs.

To ensure youngsters in the Central Park area have a chance to put those skills into practice, B.A.S.S. has arranged for more than 600 rod-and-reel combos to be donated for programs within NYC Parks, courtesy of Shakespeare, Berkley, Bass Pro Shops and Zebco.

“Our hope is that we can connect more kids with fishing opportunities and expose beginners to the joys of the sport,” said Akin. “The generosity of B.A.S.S. sponsors and other tackle companies in donating rods and reels will create a lasting impression and provide the tools to foster future anglers.”

The day will also include raffles with prizes from B.A.S.S., Costa, GoPro and many more.

In addition, Stihl Timbersports will mark its 30th anniversary by conducting its U.S. Pro and Collegiate championships in Central Park during the festival.

Adventures NYC will be held in the Bandshell Area of Central Park from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. All events are free and open to the public. For more information visit, www.nycgovparks.org.

SOUTH KOREA TO SIGN FLW INTERNATIONAL SANCTIONING AGREEMENT

SOUTH KOREA TO SIGN FLW INTERNATIONAL SANCTIONING AGREEMENT
Advisory for Monday, June 15, 2015
WHAT:  FLW, the world’s largest tournament-fishing organization, is set to sign an agreement with South Korea to bring their internationally sanctioned bass-fishing tournaments to the Eastern Asian nation. The agreement will be signed by Jin-Soo Kang, CEO of MiruNamu, Inc., and Director of OBS broadcasting immediately preceding the June 26 weigh-in on the Walmart FLW Tour stage.
WHEN:                 Friday, June 26, 2015
WHERE:               Walmart FLW Tour at the Potomac River presented by Ranger Boats
                              Smallwood State Park
                              2750 Sweden Point Road
                              Marbury, Md.
NOTES: Named after the founder of Ranger Boats, Forrest L. Wood, FLW introduced its Fishing League Worldwide tagline last year to better reflect its status as the world’s largest tournament fishing organization. Earlier this year FLW expanded its presence on the world stage yet again with the introduction of a sanctioning program allowing international partners to license the iconic brand and run FLW tournaments abroad.
South Korea will run a series of FLW tournaments that advance anglers, who are citizens of the host country, to a new international division at the Rayovac FLW Series Championship beginning in 2016. The highest finisher among countries represented in the international division will then advance to the Forrest Wood Cup, making it the sport’s only true world championship.
Canada has already signed on as FLW’s first partner under the new program and is set to host an FLW tournament in 2015 with at least three events slated in Canada for 2016. South Korea is the second country to sign on for international sanctioning. Details on their hosted tournaments will be available soon.
Additional FLW qualifying tournaments in other countries are forthcoming. Watch FLWFishing.com for details.
