MDJ, Fitzgerald Battle for AOY by Kyle Wood

The Southeast Division of the Rayovac FLW Series will wrap up this week on Lake Seminole after what has been an action-packed season complete with record fields and 30-pound stringers. On top of battling for the $40,000 top prize for winning the event, anglers will also be competing to claim the Strike King Angler of the Year award and its $2,000 prize package, which includes deposits into the 2016 FLW Series.

The AOY finale is likely to be a two-man race between Mark Daniels Jr. and Trevor Fitzgerald, but several other pros are within range of stealing away the title.

Here’s how it breaks down.

The resulting fish is a keeper, but not the type Daniels needs to go for the win.

MDJ on Fire

Daniels, or MDJ, as he’s come to be known, has torched the first two Southeast Division tournaments. He took fourth on Lake Okeechobee and eighth on Guntersville – both places that he’s still learning since moving east to fish professionally. Seminole presents the same challenge of having to decipher a new place, however, it is a strong grass fishery, and MDJ excels at fishing grass.

He currently holds a mere two-point lead over Fitzgerald heading into this final event. That’s scary for Daniels due to the wealth of knowledge that Fitzgerald has about this pond. Luckily, Daniels isn’t one to get spun out and takes each day as it comes. He knows how to get the job done.

A skilled net job by co-angler Donald Jason as Trevor Fitzgerald's giant bass jumps near the boat.

Fitzgerald Hanging Tight

Like Daniels, Fitzgerald also nabbed back-to-back top 10s at the first two events. He finished fifth and ninth at the Big O and G-Ville, respectively. The thing Fitzgerald has going for him is that he lives just four hours down the road from Seminole in Belleview, Fla., and is pretty familiar with the lake, even though Fitzgerald says that he pretty much only fishes Seminole during major tournaments.

He won the B.A.S.S. Open on Seminole in 2010, but his last visit was actually back in 2013 when the FLW Series stopped at Seminole in April. He placed 21st in that event.

While his track record on Seminole is no certain forecast for how this tournament will play out, Fitzgerald still gets the betting man’s odds of claiming his first AOY title.

Tennessee pro Hensley Powell has quietly fished his way into contention with a two-day total of 35 pounds, 11 ounces. He's in fifth.

Down, but Not Out

Sitting in third right now is Hensley Powell with 471 points – 19 points behind Daniels. Powell also netted a top 10 on Okeechobee and demonstrated his grass-fishing abilities in doing so. He hails from Tennessee, so this tournament isn’t exactly in his backyard. Yet, with the season he has had and momentum coming in, Powell could easily find his way into the top 10 for a shot at the AOY title.

Joe Holland holds down the fourth spot, 21 points back with 469 total. Holland is from Maine and has quite a bit of experience on the Potomac River and Champlain. Both happen to be bodies of water well-suited for shallow grass techniques that might factor in at Seminole. He also spends a lot of time in Florida each year and is a proven grass fisherman. He fished the 2013 FLW Series event on Seminole where he finished 65th. That might not be the best indicator of how he will fare this week, but at least he has seen the water before, which is always a plus.

In fifth stands Brian Holder of Gastonia, N.C. He has been to Seminole several times over the last few years when the Rayovac FLW Series has rolled through. Conditions have been changing over the last week on Seminole (see below), and the fishing has been up and down, which means that having seen the lake at different times of the year can key an angler into something that others with less experience might have overlooked. Despite being 24 points back, Holder has a shot if the leaders falter.

The Long Shots

A few other names to note that could rise to contention if Daniels or Fitzgerald slip are some studs like Chris McCall (446 points), Jared McMillan (440), Todd Auten (429), George Kapiton (426), Clent Davis (426), Chad Prough (424) and Brandon Medlock (423).

The lake has been in a state of flux lately. Heavy rains had the lake high and dirty just a few weeks ago, but now it has begun to clear up some and sits 2 to 3 feet below normal pool. Warm weather in the South has sent the water surface temperature skyrocketing up and scattered some of the fish. Regardless, it is still Seminole, and the potential to see some giant stingers of fish is very real.

Anything is possible on a fishery like Seminole, and there’s no doubt it is the perfect stage to decide who is the best angler in the Southeast Division.

Memoirs Detail 78-Year Adventure Of Television Fishing Show Pioneer

Bass Fishing, Brown Dogs & Curveballs, a new autobiography by B.A.S.S. co-owner Jerry McKinnis is set be released this week and will be available for purchase at www.jerrysbook.com. The 365-page book documents McKinnis’ transition from a professional baseball career to a bass fishing icon.

Memoirs Detail 78-Year Adventure Of Television Fishing Show Pioneer

[print_link]

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — As his hopes of becoming a major league baseball pitcher began to fade, Jerry McKinnis gave himself over to another passion: fishing. Baseball’s loss was fishing’s gain as McKinnis progressed from local television fishing show host to cable television pioneer to bass fishing icon.

It’s all documented in McKinnis’ homespun style in his new autobiography, Bass Fishing, Brown Dogs & Curveballs, to be released this week. His bass fishing and baseball exploits are just part of what McKinnis calls “a very interesting 78-year adventure.”

“Brown dogs” refers to the dachshunds that served as McKinnis’ sidekicks on his immensely popular “The Fishin’ Hole” television program. The show debuted on ESPN in 1980, the year after the cable network first went on the air, and was its longest-running regular program after “SportsCenter.” McKinnis parlayed his expertise and creativity as a television producer into JM Productions, one of the most powerful and prolific production companies in the outdoors. In 2010, he and two partners, Don Logan and Jim Copeland, purchased B.A.S.S., the world’s largest fishing organization.

The book is a must-read for those interested in a history of the modern era of bass fishing from the perspective of one who helped shape it. He reveals how the people he met along his journey — Coach Bobby Knight, Kevin VanDam, the Murray twins (Bobby and Billy), Forrest Wood, Ted Williams and Bill Dance — influenced him and, through him, the sport of bass fishing.

It also reveals what it was like to grow up in the heartland during post-World War II America, when baseball was king and fishing was a way to put food on the table. McKinnis does not sidestep some of the disappointments in his personal life, including divorce and financial struggles. Instead, he candidly examines the setbacks in hopes of delivering what he calls “some important messages” about life.

Family-Friendly Fun Is In Store At BASSfest In Northwest Tennessee

[print_link]

PARIS, Tenn. — When the second annual BASSfest celebration gets underway June 3, 124 of America’s best bass anglers will be focused on one goal — winning the lion’s share of the $850,000 prize purse.

Fans attending the event June 3-7 will have a multitude of options to keep them entertained for days, however.

The Zippo Bassmaster BASSfest at Kentucky Lake presented by A.R.E. Truck Caps will feature an outdoors expo, a carnival for kids, an arts and crafts show and more. On Friday, June 5, Bassmaster University will offer must-attend seminars taught by Bassmaster Elite Series pros and B.A.S.S. staff.

Fishing fans and their families can join in all the fun for the five days. All B.A.S.S. events are free. Following are 25 things to see and do at BASSfest in Paris.

1. Take off with the anglers. On Wednesday and Thursday, June 3-4, the full field of 124 competitors — including 111 Elite Series anglers and 13 from the Opens Series — will blast off from Paris Landing Marina at 6:15 a.m. to fish Kentucky Lake. And, on Saturday and Sunday, the top anglers will take off from the same dock in hopes of earning the $100,000 first prize.

2. Who will earn a second shot? On Friday, June 5, anglers who finished below the Top 50 on Thursday try to redeem themselves on Lake Barkley (takeoff at Lick Creek State Park at 6:15 a.m.) for a second chance. All weights are zeroed for this one-day shootout, and the Top 10 anglers advance to Saturday’s semifinal competition.

3. College teams clash. While the pros compete, college anglers will also battle on Lake Barkley June 3-5 in the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Wild Card presented by Bass Pro Shops. Takeoff will be at 5:30 a.m. at Lick Creek Recreational Area, with the weigh-in on Friday on the main event stage at Paris Landing State Park. The weigh-in will determine which teams will head on to the Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops July 9-11 on Lake DuBay on the Wisconsin River.

4. Watch us — live! On Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., be sure to log on to Bassmaster.com and follow the competition with the new Bassmaster Live on-the-water coverage. Mark Zona and Tommy Sanders from The Bassmasters television show, and B.A.S.S. emcee Dave Mercer will be on-hand with commentary.

5. Get to know the High School All-American team. B.A.S.S. recently named 12 outstanding high school anglers to the first Bassmaster High School All-American Fishing Team. At BASSfest, these 12 anglers will be paired with Elite Series pros who are not competing Saturday to fish Lake Barkley in a one-day competition. See these 12 star students weigh in on the Elite Series stage prior to the official Elite Series weigh-in.

6. Feel that horsepower. Blast off in a new bass boat during a free demo ride. Rides are offered after takeoff Friday, Saturday and Sunday by the Skeeter Performance Boats Demo Tour, Yamaha’s 2015 Discover VMAX SHO Demo Tour, Mercury ProXS Demo Tour, the 2015 Triton Demo Tour and the Nitro Boats Demo Tour.

7. Entertain the kiddos. Kids can have hands-on fun at the petting zoo at Paris Landing State Park, before taking a whirl on the rides at the kids’ carnival, complete with cotton candy and other carnival foods.

8. Enjoy live music. Following the weigh-in Friday, fans can enjoy live music from three different singer-songwriters. Philip White has written songs for country music greats such as Rascal Flatts, Reba Macentire and Blake Shelton. Monte Holmes, who has penned songs for George Strait, will perform as well, followed by Scotty Emrick, who wrote well-known lyrics for Toby Keith, Billy Currington and more.

9. Check out the outdoors expo. More than 125 national and local exhibitors, including a variety of food and beverage vendors, will be on hand starting at 10 a.m. Friday and Saturday and noon on Sunday. Locally, be sure to stop by the Tennessee National Guard, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Center and Land Between the Lakes booths, plus more.

10. Score lots of freebies. Minn Kota will register fans to win a great Minn Kota product. One lucky fan will win an Evan Williams Bourbon Cooler prize pack on Sunday. And Carhartt will offer chances to win Carhartt-branded prizes with a spin-to-win game.

11. Follow us! Use the hashtag #bassmaster on Twitter, Instagram, Vine, Pinterest or Facebook to keep an eye on the action. And check out the BASSfest Facebook event page https://www.facebook.com/events/1487037278214938/ for pictures and updates.

PHOENIX MAN WINS $5,000 PLAYING FLW FANTASY FISHING

PHOENIX MAN WINS $5,000 PLAYING FLW FANTASY FISHING

[print_link]

MINNEAPOLIS (May 21, 2015) – Scott Sprencz of Phoenix, Arizona, correctly picked five of the top 10 anglers in last week’s Walmart FLW Tour event on Lake Eufaula presented by Quaker State. For his picks, Sprencz won $5,000 by playing FLW Fantasy Fishing, held in conjunction with the FLW Tour fishing tournament.
“I was really excited when I found out I won,” said Sprencz. “I’ve been playing FLW Fantasy Fishing for seven years, so I’ve been waiting a long time for a win.
“Normally I like to pick 10 anglers that I think will make it into the top 50,” continued Spencz. “However the last two tournaments I decided to trust my gut and pick a couple long shots to make it past the top 50 and into the top 10. They ended up having a great run and earned me a lot of points.”
Spencz said it was the research he put in on the FLW website before making his picks that helped push him to the top of the leaderboard.
“I look at how each angler has done on the lake in the past, as well as the time of year the tournament took place,” said Spencz. “That helps me to match winning patterns with the right group of anglers. I also take into account which competitors are on a hot streak. Right now, it’s Wesley Strader.”
When asked if he has any special plans for the prize money Spencz said he’d like to continue saving for a new boat.
“I’ve got a little 12-foot boat right now, but it will be nice to upgrade and the $5,000 is a good start,” said Spencz.
Finishing in second place on the fantasy side for the Lake Eufaula event was Kelly White of Sycamore, Alabama, who won $1,000, and in third place was Ricky Brannum of Kerman, California, who won $500. Several other winners from across the globe took home prizes including cash, ShopFLW gift cards, hats and baits.
The 2015 Fantasy Fishing season consists of seven tournaments surrounding the Walmart FLW Tour regular season as well as the season-ending Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of bass fishing. Fans compete for more than $7,000 in cash and prizes from each of the six tournaments and a top prize of $5,000. The cumulative grand prize for the highest ranked player at the end of the season is $10,000.
To begin playing, visit FantasyFishing.com and sign up. Select a team of 10 anglers against an allocated $200 salary cap and select your guess for the tournament winning weight as a tiebreaker. Create a league to play against your friends and compete for bragging rights. Player’s modifications to their teams must be finalized by 11:59 p.m. ET the night prior to the tournament.
