MARBURY, Md. (May 18, 2015) – Mike Roselle of La Plata, Maryland, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 16 pounds, 13 ounces Saturday to win the third Walmart Bass Fishing League Shenandoah Division tournament of 2015 on Potomac River. For his victory, Roselle earned $6,235.
“My primary spot was on the north end of the river,” said Roselle. “The area was full of spawning fish and had a lot of scattered grass. There were also postspawn fish that had pulled off the bank and were sitting in anywhere from two to four feet of water.”
Roselle said he used a green-pumpkin-colored Strike King jig rigged with a green-pumpkin Strike King Rage Craw to catch his entire stringer of fish.
“The only time I would get a bite is when I’d break it off from the grass, so I tried to always be in contact with it,” said Roselle. “The creek has a lot of crawfish in it right now so I knew this jig would come up big.”
Roselle went on to say he fished only two spots the entire tournament.
“Once the tide goes out the fish stop feeding. Of the 15 keepers I ended catching, almost all came before noon,” said Roselle.

THRIFT WINS WALMART FLW TOUR ON LAKE EUFAULA PRESENTED BY QUAKER STATE

THRIFT WINS WALMART FLW TOUR ON LAKE EUFAULA PRESENTED BY QUAKER STATE

Shelby Pro Beats 149 Anglers, Wins $125,000 in Nationally Televised Event

[print_link]

EUFAULA, Ala. (May 17, 2015) – The Walmart FLW Tour event at Lake Eufaula presented by Quaker State promised a dramatic finish Sunday as all of the final top-10 anglers competing on the final day were within striking distance of first place and the title of Lake Eufaula Champion. When the scales settled, it was veteran pro Bryan Thrift of Shelby, North Carolina, who had caught enough weight to earn the fourth victory of his career.

Thrift’s final-day catch of five bass weighing 15 pounds, 5 ounces gave him a four-day total of 69-14 and the win by a 2-pound, 15-ounce margin over day three leader Troy Morrow of Eastanollee, Georgia. Thrift beat out 149 of the best bass-fishing anglers in the world and claimed the first place prize of $125,000.
“I wanted to win this tournament worse than I have ever wanted to win one in my life,” said Thrift, who pushed his career earnings to more than $1.6 million in FLW competition. “Lake Eufaula is my favorite lake and I absolutely love coming here because it fits well with my style of fishing. I like to run and gun, make three casts, then pull up and go somewhere else. And there are a lot of big fish here. I finished second in the last two major Tour events here so I wanted to win on this lake very badly.
“I fished harder this week than I ever have before,” Thrift continued. “I put 30 hours in three days of practice on my new Evinrude G2 outboard. I sat on my butt for three days just idling and looking and marking – not even fishing. I had around 200 waypoints coming in to this tournament and I was just hoping that I would be able to fish them and come across five good ones each day. The key for me was just covering a lot of water and fishing as much as I possibly could.”
After catching a 7-pounder on day one, a 6½-pounder on day two and two 5-pounders on day three, Thrift seemed to be on the big fish pattern necessary to methodically work his way to the top of the leaderboard. Despite his lack of a kicker on Sunday, Thrift said he still managed to grind out eight keepers on an unnamed swimbait and a frog, to seal the win.
“I figured someone would catch a big limit today and that I didn’t have enough to win,” Thrift said. “I never got that big bite today like I had been all week, but I can’t complain. I’ve had an awesome week.”
Thrift’s win moved him up to second place in the 2015 FLW Tour Angler of the Year race with just two tournaments left. When asked if he thought that anyone could catch leader Wesley Strader, Thrift said that it is going to come down to the last tournament of the year.
“The AOY race is going to go to whoever has had the best year of their entire career,” Thrift said. “Our next stop, Lake Chickamauga, is Wesley’s home lake. Everybody is going to have to hold their ground, because we know Wesley is going to catch them. It’s going to be a super-tight race and going to come down to the last fish weighed in at the last tournament on the Potomac River.”
The top 10 pros finished the tournament:
               1st:          Bryan Thrift, Shelby, N.C., 20 bass, 69-14, $100,000 + $25,000 Ranger Cup Bonus
               2nd:         Troy Morrow, Eastanollee, Ga., 20 bass, 66-15, $29,789
               3rd:          Clent Davis, Montevallo, Ala., 20 bass, 66-1, $24,822
4th:          Wesley Strader, Spring City, Tenn., 20 bass, 63-1, $19,855
5th:          Jeff Gustafson, Keewatin, Ontario, Canada, 19 bass, 62-15, $18,862
               6th:          Randy Haynes, Counce, Tenn., 20 bass, 60-1, $17,869
               7th:          Shinichi Fukae, Palestine, Texas, 20 bass, 57-12, $16,875
               8th:          Zack Birge, Blanchard, Okla., 20 bass, 57-12, $15,882
               9th:          Adrian Avena, Vineland, N.J., 20 bass, 56-9, $14,889
               10th:        John Cox, DeBary, Fla., 20 bass, 55-6, $13,895

Illinois Team Earns High School Midwestern Title, Advances To National Championship

Illinois Team Earns High School Midwestern Title, Advances To National Championship

[print_link]

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Zach Hingson and Tyler Benedict had only fished Lake Springfield one time prior to Sunday’s Costa Bassmaster High School Midwestern Open presented by TNT Fireworks.

So when they had a good five-fish limit just 35 minutes after takeoff, they were thrilled.

Maybe a little too thrilled.

With the anglers losing focus in all of the excitement, their boat captain Alan Hingson called one of the eight timeouts allotted by B.A.S.S. rules to calm them down. From there, the team members from Illinois’ Arthur Levington Atwood Hammond High School culled their way up to 18 pounds, 8 ounces and walked away with the victory.

Dailus Richardson and Trevor McKinney of Benton High School in Illinois placed second with 14-11 on a day when wind gusts reached 32 miles per hour.

“When they had a limit in just 35 or 40 minutes, I think they were shell-shocked a little bit,” Alan Hingson said. “They were almost wrapping fish up in the trolling motor and just going crazy. I called timeout and told them to put their rods down for a minute to settle down.”

Just a few minutes after the timeout, Hingson and Benedict caught one of their largest fish, a largemouth that weighed 4-2. Their bag also included a 5-2 that tied Richardson and McKinney for big fish of the tournament.

Hingson and Benedict said it was one of those days when everything just seemed to work right.
“It didn’t seem to matter what we used,” Zach Hingson said. “We caught them on a little bit of everything.”

Benedict listed a long line of baits that produced fish.

“Crankbaits, Chatterbaits, Carolina rigs, beavers — a little bit of everything,” he said. “We caught fish on everything we threw.”

All three participants had a feeling a win was meant to be when Benedict made his first cast with a Carolina Rig.

His reel backlashed, and the bait only traveled about 20 feet. But when he cleared the backlash and lifted his rod tip, he had a fish on his line.

“That’s when I knew somebody was looking out for us,” Benedict said. “That’s the kind of good luck we had today.”

The team’s catch of 18-8 was three pounds heavier than the winning weight of a tournament filled with adult anglers on Lake Springfield Saturday. It was enough to help them easily past a solid field that brought plenty of fish to the scales.

Of the 34 boats in the event, 33 weighed in at least one fish. The Top 10 teams all had at least 10-3, and the Top 5 had 12-9 or better.

Richardson and McKinney came in a distant second with 14-11. They said their catch, which was anchored by a 5-2 largemouth, came mostly by way of flipping a beaver.

Luke Jasper and Tommy Rimbo of Illinois’ Lemont High School placed third with 13-9. They used jigs and Texas rigged plastics to catch their fish.

The Top 3 teams earned berths into the Costa Bassmaster High School National Championship presented by TNT Fireworks. The tournament is scheduled for July 22-25 on Kentucky Lake in Paris, Tenn.

“I’ve never been to Kentucky Lake,” Zach Hingson said. “But I’m looking forward to see it. I can’t wait to get there.”

At every event on this year’s Costa Bassmaster High School Series, an act of courage, courtesy or sportsmanship is recognized as the “Costa Moment.” The honor for this event went to Anthony Fazio and Grant Olsen of Illinois’ Minooka Anglers Club for towing fellow tournament anglers Sean Cook and Tommy Zobel of Joliet Central High School back to the weigh-in site.

“We ran out of juice,” Zobel said. “Our trolling motor battery and our cranking battery were both dead, and they took their last 20 minutes of fishing time to bring us in. It was pretty cool of them.”

MORROW RETAINS LEAD AT WALMART FLW TOUR ON LAKE EUFAULA PRESENTED BY QUAKER STATE

MORROW RETAINS LEAD AT WALMART FLW TOUR ON LAKE EUFAULA PRESENTED BY QUAKER STATE

2010 BFL All-American Champion Hopes To Fend Off Hard-Charging Bryan Thrift

 [print_link]

EUFAULA, Ala. (May 16, 2015) – Pro Troy Morrow of Eastanollee, Georgia, caught a five-bass limit Saturday weighing 15 pounds, 4 ounce to retain the lead on day three of the Walmart FLW Tour at Lake Eufaula presented by Quaker State. Morrow’s three-day total of 15 bass weighing 54 pounds, 13 ounces gives him a slim 4-ounce lead over second-place pro Bryan Thrift of Shelby, North Carolina, heading into the fourth and final day of competition. The field is now cut to the final 10 anglers in the event that featured 149 of the best bass-fishing anglers in the world competing for a top cash award of up to $125,000.

“Today was a pretty tough, slow day for me,” said Morrow, a five-year veteran who has six previous top-10 finishes but is still seeking his first win on the FLW Tour. “I used four baits today to catch my fish, and that was really out of desperation. I’ve been adding as I go – one bait the first day, two baits on the second day and then four today. I’m having to do something different in order to get the right bites.”
Morrow said that he caught 15 keepers throughout the day and estimated that he fished around 30 different brush piles.
Tomorrow I’m going to have to do the same thing,” Morrow continued. “Maybe I’ll change up the order, or which ones I choose to fish first, but I’m going to keep doing what got me here.”
When asked if he felt any pressure leading a Walmart FLW Tour event into the final day for the first time in his career, Morrow said that he was focused on only one thing.
“Where I’m at in my career right now, that is what I need next – a big win. At the end of the day, I’m not going to change anything tomorrow. I’ve got one more day of fishing. It’s just me against the bass.”
The top 10 pros advancing to the final day of competition on Lake Eufaula are:
1st:          Troy Morrow, Eastanollee, Ga., 15 bass, 54-13

(May 15, 2015) – Pro Troy Morrow of Eastanollee, Georgia, caught five bass weighing 18 pounds, 1 ounce Friday to take control of the leaderboard after day two of the Walmart FLW Tour at Lake Eufaula presented by Quaker State. Morrow’s two-day total of 10 bass weighing 39 pounds, 9 ounces gives him a 1-pound, 4-ounce advantage heading into the third day of competition in the nationally televised tournament, hosted by the Eufaula Barbour County Chamber of Commerce, that features 149 anglers competing for a top cash award of up to $125,000.

“The first few keepers I caught today came from the brush piles that I targeted yesterday,” said Morrow, who already has one top-10 finish on Tour this season. “I was stuck around eight pounds for a long time, so I decided to try new areas. In these areas the spots were close together. I found a stretch of brush piles and caught a good one at each. One of the piles did give me three 3-pounders. I could tell they were different from the old ones by the weight of the fish that were coming in. By 9:30 a.m. I had put together a quality limit.
“I picked at the piles and culled through 15 keepers,” continued Morrow. “Once I hit about 18 pounds I saw the storm was coming in and I decided to move up the lake. I’m going to have to re-fish a lot of my spots tomorrow because I crunched so many different piles today. I ended up burning through a little more than I thought I would have to in order to get to this point in the tournament.”
Morrow declined to talk specifics about his baits but did mention he had to make a change around 2 o’clock.
“By that time I had10 or 11 pounds, but knew I needed to switch,” Morrow said. “I wanted to guarantee that I was going to fish on day three. I did end up figuring out what I need to throw, so hopefully it holds up tomorrow. I have about 20 spots left that have good fish in them so that’s where I’ll be targeting.”

Humminbird® Pro Aaron Martens Steals Cliff’s Perch On Blackbird Pattern

Humminbird® Pro Aaron Martens

Steals Cliff’s Perch On Blackbird Pattern

[print_link]

EUFAULA, AL (May 14, 2015) – Bass Elite pro Aaron Martens is one happy man after breaking a seemingly unending streak of second place finishes. Even better that it happened on Mother’s Day with mom at his side during the final day weigh-in.

“I told my wife Lesley, ‘I’ll need 13 second places before I get another first place – and that is exactly what happened.  All I have to say is it’s fun to win again,’” says Martens.

Prior to this recent win at the Bassmaster Elite on Lake Havasu, it had been three years since Martens took first, the last at Illinois’ Lake Decatur in 2012. Since, he’s finished second 13 times, most recently on the Sacramento River.

It’s not really superstitious, just something I felt in my gut. Now I have to offset all those second places with firsts!”

What’s even cooler is how Martens won the tournament, showing what a fantastically well-rounded angler Martens really is.

Although known as a finesse fishing guru, a guy who knows light line, dainty baits and fishing electronics inside out, Martens is also a student of the natural world – and bass fishing history.

Case in point, a tournament-winning pattern that harkens back decades to a time when fishing magazine cover art routinely featured leaping bass smashing feathers amidst bulrushes and cattails. And when lure companies marketed hard baits that mimicked birds, specifically the red- and yellow-winged blackbirds that make their homes in bassy waters.

Fast-forward to 2015: Aaron Martens steals Cliff’s perch on a blackbird pattern.

“I’ve known about the blackbird thing since I was a kid. It’s helped me in tournaments on the Delta, some smaller California lakes and now, Havasu. But it happens all over the country. Bass attack birds like sharks when they drop in the water. It can be pretty easy. And I’m pretty sure they’ll jump out of the water to eat birds, too,” says Martens

But Martens says he wasn’t necessarily matching the hatch, although he had fish spit up feathers in his livewell. “They were eating birds, crawdads, anything they could get their mouths on.”

He alternated between a ½- and ¾-ounce weight with a 4/0 Heavy Cover Gamakatsu hook with a green pumpkin skirt and either a Strike King Rage Craw or Zoom Speed Craw, flipping areas of the thick tule-lined banks of the Colorado River inhabited by blackbirds.

Although he found most of his fish by simply watching for the presence of birds, he also glanced down at the ‘birds on his boat – specifically, ONIX 10ci SI units.

“I used the ONIX Side Imaging to run the reed lines and look for fish, although the majority were way back in the thick stuff. But I also used SI to find the best manmade habitat in the lake. I also weighed three fish caught deeper off habitat,” says Martens

Martens has been running two Humminbird ONIX 10ci SI units this season and calls the imagery “stunning.”

“What I really like best about ONIX is the imagery … the incredible detail of both the Side- and Down Imaging. Both are fantastic tools for finding structure and fish, shallow or deep. Even really shallow. I can find cover and fish with Side Imaging in two feet of water.”

He continues: “I use Side Imaging a lot … it’s the best tool I have. It’s like my eyes underwater. The ONIX SI draws a really true image, shows a lot of detail; really clear.”

Martens says running Side Imaging is a huge part of his pre-fishing program anywhere in the country.

“First thing I do is set the color palette to blue, which I can see the best. Then I idle around with the range set to 100-150 feet. If I’m fishing shallow I may bring it in a little bit, but the detail is so good that I can cover water faster, looking for cover and fish with the range set pretty far out.”

Martens is also optimistic about tournaments later in the year that will put him back on deep water.

“The new ONIX transducer changes everything about Humminbird Down Imaging. It’s so clear now you can see the heads and tails of fish.”

Martens has been using the new version 2.300 software, which he says has improved ONIX functionality.

“I’m always using a combination of touch screen and buttons. And the new updates have made operation much easier. Like zooming in quick on the map with the track wheel.  It’s also made it much easier to turn off the sonar when I’m fishing. That’s one thing I do in super-clear waters like Havasu. If fish are spooky, I turn the pinging off. I don’t want any extra noise in the water.”

Martens is already strategizing for upcoming events on Lake Fork and Kentucky Lake. “I really think Humminbird 360 could come into play at these events. I’m also excited to play around with Humminbird SmartStrike and the new maps at some of the upcoming tournaments.”

DAVIS LEADS DAY ONE OF WALMART FLW TOUR ON LAKE EUFAULA PRESENTED BY QUAKER STATE

DAVIS LEADS DAY ONE OF WALMART FLW TOUR ON LAKE EUFAULA PRESENTED BY QUAKER STATE

Texan Honeycutt Leads Co-Anglers

[print_link]

EUFAULA, Ala. (May 14, 2015) – Pro Clent Davis of Montevallo, Alabama, caught five bass weighing 22 pounds, 9 ounces Thursday to grab the lead on day one of the Walmart FLW Tour at Lake Eufaula presented by Quaker State. Just 1 pound, 1 ounce separates the leader from second-place pro Troy Morrow of Eastanollee, Georgia, who caught five bass weighing 21-8 in the nationally televised tournament, hosted by the Eufaula Barbour County Chamber of Commerce, that features 149 anglers competing for a top cash award of up to $125,000.

“I hit around 30 to 40 different spots today and caught eight keepers,” said Davis, a former FLW College Fishing standout from the University of Montevallo in Alabama. “Sometimes, it’s better to be lucky than good. Coming in to the day I thought I would be pretty lucky to catch 12 pounds.
“It’s definitely a numbers game right now,” Davis continued. “I pull up to a spot, make three casts, and if they’re not feeding then I’m heading to my next area. I’ve been fishing here all my life, so I’ve got plenty of spots to hit. I caught one today off of a spot that I had fished six years ago when I was still in college.”
Davis said that it was no real secret what he and the majority of the anglers in the top-10 were doing – targeting suspended fish over brush piles. He used a variety of baits to catch his fish Thursday.
“I was throwing a big swimbait, a big crankbait, a big worm and a big jig,” Davis said. “One fish will want a swimbait and the next fish wants a worm dragging on the bottom. The key seems to be pulling up to the spot at the right time of the day when they are feeding.
“I think that the fish tend to reload here,” Davis went on to say. “I believe that there are more fish heading deeper and they’ll replenish some of the areas that I hit today. I’m just going to go fishing again and we’ll see how it goes tomorrow.”
