HENDERSON, N.C. (April 27, 2015) – Chad Poteat of Mount Airy, North Carolina, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 17 pounds, 13 ounces Saturday to win the second Walmart Bass Fishing League Shenandoah Division tournament of 2015 on Kerr Lake. For his victory, Poteat earned $5,889.
“It feels awesome to win this tournament,” Poteat said. “To go out there and excel in a sport I love is truly a blessing.”
Poteat said that he flipped a green-pumpkin Zoom Brush Hog into button bushes for about 2½ hours before catching his first five-bass limit.
“I probably caught 10 or 11 keepers total,” said Poteat. “There’s always a full spawn in those bushes.”
Poteat switched his strategy in the afternoon as clouds and rain rolled into the area.
“The wind picked up so I began targeting main-lake points near Nutbush Creek with a white-colored Lunker Lure Hawg Caller spinnerbait,” said Poteat. “I was fortunate enough to bring in three more good ones.
“You have to fish the conditions,” continued Poteat. “Changing up my approach to the fish was key for me. I decided to fish the wind and it produced some notable weights.”
The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:
1st:          Chad Poteat, Mount Airy, N.C., five bass, 17-13, $3,889 + $2,000 Ranger Cup Bonus
2nd:         Wally Szuba, Cary, N.C., five bass, 17-10, $1,944
3rd:          Mike Miller, Trinity, N.C., five bass, 17-7, $1,297

10th:        Jerry Comperatore, Tarentum, Pa., three bass, 9-11, $215
Everhart caught the biggest bass of the tournament in the co-angler division and earned the day’s Big Bass award of $262.
The top 50 boaters and 50 co-anglers based on point standings will qualify for the Oct. 15-17 Regional Championship on Lake Wateree in Camden, South Carolina. Boaters will compete for a top award of a Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard and $20,000, while co-anglers will fish for a new Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard.
The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 120 tournaments throughout the season, five in each division. The top 50 boaters and co-anglers from each division qualify for a regional tournament and compete to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the Walmart BFL All-American. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the Rayovac FLW Series or even the Walmart FLW Tour.

Qualifiers Chosen For Bassmaster High School All-State Fishing Teams

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — High school students excelling in angling, academics and conservation awareness are among dozens of young anglers chosen for the 2015 Bassmaster High School All-State Fishing Team.

Interest in the team is influenced by exceptionally strong growth in the B.A.S.S. High School Nation.

“These qualifiers are helping shape the future of the sport, one high school at a time,” said Hank Weldon, manager for the B.A.S.S. High School program. “We are excited to showcase the academic and all-around attributes of our high school members through this new initiative.”

To be considered for inclusion on the Bassmaster High School All-State Fishing Team, a student was nominated by a parent, coach, teacher or other school official. Students currently enrolled in grades 10-12 with a current-year grade point average of 2.5 or higher are eligible.

B.A.S.S. received more than 200 nominations from across the nation. From these, judges selected 57 anglers from 33 states to make the All-State Fishing Team.

Now, a second panel of judges is further narrowing the field to create the first Bassmaster High School All-American Fishing Team. The 12 All-Americans will be selected from the All-State team members . Criteria include success in high school fishing tournaments and involvement in conservation efforts and other community service activities.

The final team of 12 members will compete in a one-day Bassmaster All-American High School Bass Tournament held during the 2015 BASSfest event, a fan-favorite festival that is one of nine Bassmaster Elite Series bass tournaments underway this year.

Elite Series anglers will serve as “coaches” for the student anglers in the June 6 tournament on Lake Barkley, Tennessee. The high school standouts will be honored on the main BASSfest stage at the weigh-in. All will be profiled in Bassmaster Magazine, read monthly by 3.2 million people, as well as on Bassmaster.com.

College Series Heading To Wisconsin For National Championship

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Some of the nation’s best smallmouth fishing is on tap for collegiate anglers competing in the 2015 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series National Championship presented by Bass Pro Shops.

The championship is July 9-11 at Lake DuBay on the Wisconsin River. Event host is the Stevens Point Area Convention & Visitors Bureau.

“We are excited to be the first Wisconsin location to host the national championship and to showcase the quality fishing within central Wisconsin to the participants and spectators,” said Sara Brish, executive director of the Stevens Point Area Convention & Visitors Bureau.

“Our partnerships with the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, UWSP Big Dawgs Fishing Club and the hospitality community will help us to roll out the red carpet for the upcoming event.”

The event continues a tradition for holding the event on midsize bass fisheries surrounded by tourism and outdoor opportunities for the college anglers and fans. The recreationally rich Stevens Point area and 6,830-acre Lake DuBay are conveniently located in central Wisconsin.

“With the size of the event and the awareness it receives, not only is it the premier championship in the college ranks, it is a premier event in the sport of bass fishing as a whole,” said Hank Weldon, Carhartt Bassmaster College Series tournament manager.

Teams qualify for the championship through a series of conference regional tournaments that began in January. The final qualifier is the Wild Card event, June 3-5. That tournament will take place on Lake Barkley in Tennessee.

Up to 90 teams are expected to compete. At the national championship, the entire field competes on the first two days. On the third day, the field is trimmed to the Top 5 teams catching the heaviest cumulative five-bass daily limits.

Following the championship round, members of the Top 4 teams compete individually in the Carhartt College Series Classic Bracket presented by Bass Pro Shops for three more days. The top college angler in the Classic bracket competition earns an invitation to compete with the world’s top professional bass anglers in the 2016 Bassmaster Classic on Grand Lake near Tulsa, Okla.

Weldon expects the new fishery and host venue to attract a large audience, thanks in part to a Bassmaster Elite Series-style fishing expo in Stevens Point.

“We have broken attendance records the past two years in Young Harris, Ga., with close to 10,000 attendees over the course of the week,” Weldon noted. “Stevens Point has the potential to break those records once again.”

Takeoffs will be held at Tiki Beach Bar and Grill (1126 County Road DB, Mosinee, Wis.). Weigh-ins will be at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point campus at Colman Field (2100 Maria Dr., Stevens Point, Wis.).

The championship, like all Carhartt Bassmaster College Series events, will be aired on the ESPNU network.

AREY WINS BACK-TO-BACK AT WALMART FLW TOUR ON BEAVER LAKE PRESENTED BY RAYOVAC

AREY WINS BACK-TO-BACK AT WALMART FLW TOUR ON BEAVER LAKE PRESENTED BY RAYOVAC
North Carolina Pro Bags Largest Stringer of Tourney on Final Day to Clinch Victory
[print_link]
ROGERS, Ark. (April 26, 2015) – Quaker State pro Matt Arey has been crowned the new “Mr. Beaver Lake.” After winning this same event in 2014, the Shelby, North Carolina, native caught a five-bass limit Sunday weighing 17 pounds, 13 ounces – the largest stringer weighed in the four-day tournament – to win the Walmart FLW Tour at Beaver Lake presented by Rayovac. Arey’s four-day total of 20 bass weighing 55 pounds, 6 ounces earned him the top prize of $125,000.
Arey became the third angler to win multiple events at Beaver Lake in the 17 visits the Walmart FLW Tour has made to the White River impoundment, as FLW Tour pro Clark Wendlandt won there in 1999 and 2001 while former pro Andre Moore won in 2002 and 2005. Arey became the first to win in consecutive years.
“This is an incredible feeling,” said Arey, who has won $250,000 on Beaver Lake in just the past 379 days. “To win two years in a row here is just unthinkable. Experience is everything as a professional angler. The more I do this, the more comfortable and confident I am becoming.”
Arey displayed that confidence Sunday when he dramatically boated his largest fish of the day, an estimated five-pounder. As he casted out and retrieved his swimbait, he noticed the huge fish following his bait all the way to the boat. Out of line, Arey had no choice but to kneel low and drag his bait along the side of the boat. The big bass hit, and Arey immediately boat-swung the fish in a dramatic fashion.
“First, that normally doesn’t happen,” Arey said. “But, back in the day when I was a rookie, I would have stayed standing and just kept winding my bait and the fish would have went back under the dock. Instead, I was able to keep my composure, knelt down and got the fish to bite and in the boat. It’s experience. You just have to block everything else out and fish against the fish.”
Arey credited two key baits for the majority of his catch this week – a hand-poured homemade swimbait rigged on a 7/0 Gamakatsu EWG Monster hook and a wacky-rigged Lunkerhunt Lunker Stick.
“Each day I would start in Prairie Creek and work my way six to eight miles up the river,” Arey said. “On the third day I went all the way to the Rocky Branch and Van Hollow areas and caught some key bed fish that really saved my tournament.
“Momentum is huge in this sport, and I really hope that I can carry some of it over into our next event in two weeks on Lake Eufaula.”
The top 10 pros finished the tournament:
1st:          Quaker State pro Matt Arey, Shelby, N.C., 20 bass, 55-6
               2nd:         Tracy Adams, Wilkesboro, N.C., 20 bass, 49-12
3rd:          Livingston Lures pro Andy Morgan, Dayton, Tenn., 20 bass, 48-10
4th:          Rayovac pro Cody Meyer, Auburn, Calif., 20 bass, 48-10
               5th:          Bryan Thrift, Shelby, N.C., 20 bass, 46-13
6th:          John Cox, Debary, Fla., 18 bass, 46-4
7th:          Peter Thliveros, Saint Augustine, Fla., 20 bass, 44-8
8th           Livingston Lures pro Stetson Blaylock, Benton, Ark., 19 bass, 44-4
9th:          Vic Vatalaro, Kent, Ohio, 20 bass, 43-11
10th:        Mike Surman, Boca Raton, Fla., 20 bass, 43-7
A complete list of results can be found at FLWFishing.com.
Overall there were 47 bass weighing 110 pounds, 3 ounces caught by pros Sunday. Eight professionals weighed in five-bass limits.
Luke Dunkin of Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, won the co-angler division and $20,000 Friday with a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 18 pounds, 2 ounces, followed by Todd Lee of Jasper, Alabama, who finished in second place for the second consecutive tournament with 10 bass weighing 17 pounds, 15 ounces worth $7,500.
In addition to casting for top awards of up to $125,000 cash in the pro division and up to $25,000 cash in the co-angler division, anglers are also competing for valuable points in hopes of qualifying for the 2015 Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of bass fishing. The 2015 Forrest Wood Cup will be in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Aug. 20-23 on Lake Ouachita and is hosted by Visit Hot Springs. The Forrest Wood Cup Champion could win as much as $500,000 – professional bass-fishing’s richest prize.
Coverage of the Beaver Lake tournament will be broadcast in high-definition (HD) on NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) October 12 from 7 p.m.-8 p.m. ET. when Season 20 of “FLW” returns this fall. The Emmy-nominated “FLW” television show airs on NBCSN, the Pursuit Channel and the World Fishing Network and is broadcast to more than 564 million households worldwide, making it the most widely distributed weekly outdoors-sports television show in the world.
The Walmart FLW Tour stop on Beaver Lake presented by Evinrude was hosted by the Rogers Convention & Visitors Bureau. It was the third of six regular-season events in the FLW Tour’s 2015 season. The fourth Walmart FLW Tour event of 2015 will be held at Lake Eufaula, May 14-17 in Eufaula, Alabama, and is presented by Quaker State. The event will be hosted by the Eufaula Barbour County Chamber of Commerce. Boats will launch from Lakepoint Resort State Park Marina in Eufaula. For a complete schedule, visit FLWFishing.com.

The top 10 percent from each TBF/FLW state championship field advanced to a High School Fishing conference championship tournament along with the top three teams from each of the seven TBF/FLW High School Fishing Opens held last season. The top 10 percent of each conference championship field then advanced to the High School Fishing National Championship, coinciding with the TBF National Championship on Grand Lake and the Walmart FLW Tour at Beaver Lake. The High School Fishing national champions each receive a $5,000 college scholarship to the school of their choice.
In addition to the High School Fishing National Championship, all High School Fishing anglers nationwide automatically qualify for the world’s largest high school bass tournament, the 2015 High School Fishing World Finals, held on Pickwick Lake in Florence, Alabama, on July 8-11. At the 2014 World Finals more than $40,000 in scholarships and prizes were awarded. Visit HighSchoolFishing.org for details.

7:00 a.m.: Cool, overcast conditions greet the field, and the bite is on in Prairie Creek

It’s about 54 degrees right now in Rogers, Ark., with overcast skies and a light wind. Apparently those are the perfect conditions to spark a good bite in Prairie Creek.

For those who don’t know, takeoff is in Prairie Creek, but the marina is situated a little bit closer than halfway to the mouth of the creek. There’s an off limits area around the marina. Anglers can either idle toward the mouth and run to the main lake or idle back and then run into the creek. Every year, the back of Prairie Creek is one of the most popular community holes on the lake.

This year has been no different. Today, Cody Meyer, Matt Arey, Bryan Thrift and Tracy Adams all went into Prairie Creek to start the morning. Thrift caught one on his first cast. Adams already has three, including one fish that he thinks weighs 3 1/4 pounds. Meyer has a 2-pounder in the boat.

Most years, a few of the top pros use Prairie Creek to get a few fish in the livewell before hunting bigger bites. It looks like that program is in play again right now.

GORDON WINS TBF NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, $100,000 “LIVING THE DREAM” PACKAGE

GORDON WINS TBF NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, $100,000 “LIVING THE DREAM” PACKAGE
Gagner Claims Co-Angler Championship
[print_link]
ROGERS, Ark. (April 25, 2015) – Shawn Gordon of Russellville, Arkansas, weighed a five-bass limit on the Walmart FLW Tour stage totaling 18 pounds, 10 ounces Saturday to win the TBF National Championship on Grand Lake with a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 50 pounds, 2 ounces. For his victory, Gordon earned the $100,000 “Living The Dream” prize package and a new Ranger Z518 boat.
“All of the feelings are a lot to take in right now,” said Gordon. “This win means I can fish in the Forrest Wood Cup, which is really special.
“The first two days of the tournament I targeted shallow pockets of the lake. I also explored rocks as long as they weren’t too deep,” said Gordon. “I found a lot of fish firing along rocky points. I’d focus on those areas for about two hours and then make a run to another one of my four or five spots. After that I’d head down the lake and sight-fish to finish out the day.”
Gordon said he used an unnamed off-white-colored square-bill crankbait in the pockets and along the points, and switched to a green pumpkin-colored YUM Christie Craw for sight-fishing.
Gordon said he followed a similar pattern today, but wasn’t able to sight-fish due to the weather.
“I started in the same pockets and caught one on the crankbait, but ended up losing two. The wind was blowing like crazy where I was targeting so I couldn’t go sight-fishing. Instead I stuck to three flat points next to the creek channel where the bass were pulled up eating shad.”
Gordon said he caught around 23 keepers over the course of the three-day tournament.
“Since I wasn’t able to sight fish on the final day, the key for me was finding those fish along those three points,” Gordon said. “Luckily, they were right where I needed them to be.”
The top seven boaters on Grand Lake were:
