University of North Carolina-Charlotte Team Takes Lead In College Eastern Regional
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Lake Norman showed out for the 2015 Carhartt Bassmaster College Eastern Regional presented by Bass Pro Shops and University of North Carolina-Charlotte shined brightest Thursday with 16 pounds, 12 ounces. Cole Blythe and John Auten lead after Day 1 but are well aware of change in the air as a nasty front looks to shut down the spawn.
“This lake this time of year is changing so much so fast,” Blythe said. “Most of our fish didn’t change that much from practice, but we did have to do things slightly different from practice.”
As the fish move up to spawn on Norman, there’s enough variation in mood, location and presentation from day to day as it is. Add to that a cold front forecasted to drop the air temperature from the low 80s to the upper 20s, and game plans will have to be modified.
“We probably live 10 to 15 minutes from here,” Auten said. “But it’s still hard to stay on fish out here because they move so much.”
Just knowing that the fish are on the move will help UNCC use their local knowledge to adjust on Friday and attempt to maintain their lead.
“Today was the day to have a big bag,” said Blythe, who brought in the Carhartt Big Bass weighing 6 pounds, 10 ounces Thursday. “With the wind, rain and front coming, we’re just looking for a solid limit tomorrow to go with what we had today.”
Edward Rude III and Matthew Combs of West Virginia University pull in close behind UNCC on Day 1 with 16 pounds, 8 ounces to sit in second by a mere quarter of a pound.
“Of all the lakes we’ve fished, this one was my worst finish two years ago,” Rude said. Looks like the tide is turning on Norman for the Mountaineer and his teammate.
Jay Emmert and Christian Peake of the University of Tennessee sit in third with 15 pounds, 13 ounces after Day 1.
Lake Norman fished well on Thursday, with 87 of the 109 teams catching a limit. In addition, it took 8 pounds to place in the Top 80 and 11 pounds, 9 ounces to put teams in position for Saturday’s Top 20 cut.
All of Friday’s Lake Norman action can be found online at Bassmaster.com, or join us at Blythe Landing for the Day 2 launch at 7:30 a.m. ET and weigh-in at 3:45 p.m. ET.

Today our family grew and we could not be more excited. Nautique’s parent company, Correct Craft, acquired both Bass Cat and Yar-Craft – the two premier freshwater fishing brands in the boating industry.
Bass Cat is the industry’s highest quality bass fishing boat and, during the years JD Power surveyed boating customers, Bass Cat was the highest quality boat in the ENTIRE boating industry! Yar-Craft is the industry’s highest quality walleye fishing boat and both brands are known for outstanding customer service. So, as you can see, they will fit right in with our family!
Both Bass Cat and Yar-Craft have great organizational cultures and Ron and Jan Pierce and their family (the prior owners) have done a great job leading them and building these brands. Over the past year I have grown to significantly respect the Pierce family and I am thrilled to announce that Rick Pierce, the founder’s son, has agreed to stay on as President of both brands. The Bass Cat and Yar-Craft boats are built by loyal and hardworking employees in Mountain Home, Arkansas and we have no plans to change either the team or location. We bought these brands because they are already great brands with great teams!

OVERVIEW: Fishing should get better every day! Water temperature will be in the 50’s to lower 60’s. Baitfish will start to move to shallow water at night this month. Most species of fish will begin feeding actively this month as they prepare for the spawning season.
Largemouth Bass- Fishing for largemouth bass will be good this month. Best lures will be jigs, drop shot rigs, crank baits, spinner baits, buzz baits, Texas rigged plastic worms and senkoes. Most largemouth bass will be caught near secondary points, protected pockets, stumps and docks. Best depths will be from 2 to 10 feet deep. Most largemouth bass will start to move to their spawning areas. Rocks, stumps and shallow brush are key factors to finding bass this month. Practice catch and release during the spawning season.
Smallmouth Bass- Fishing should be fair. Best areas will be rocks, humps, ledges, stumps and secondary points. Best lures will be jig & pig, tubes, hair jigs, crank baits and top water lures. Best areas will be in the mid to the lower sections of the lake. Most smallmouth bass will start to move towards their spawning areas this month. Cloudy days with light winds are good times to try your luck! Light line and smaller lures will increase your chances to catch smallmouth bass.
Striped Bass– Fishing will be good. Stripers will be caught in the various sections of the lake and in
the larger creeks. Best lures will be jerk baits, swim baits, and Zoom flukes fished on 1/4 to 3/8 oz. lead heads. The best depths will be from near the surface to 25 feet deep. Try to find areas with the largest concentrations of baitfish. Live bait will also work this month. Night fishing will be good later this month.
Crappie- Fishing for crappie will be good this month. They will be found 2 to 10 feet deep. Best areas will be in the main creeks around docks, fallen trees, and brush piles in the mid to upper sections of the lake. Small live minnows and 1 ½ to 2 inch tubes or shad shaped plastic lures fished on 1/32 to 1/16 oz. lead heads will work best to catch crappie this month. Spider rigging is also a good method to catch crappie early this month. Some crappie will spawn later this month.
TIP OF THE Month: Weightless plastic lures are a good method to catch bass this month. The bait fish will relate to the super shallow areas at night during their spawning time. Most of the time early morning and late evenings are the best time to try your luck! Make sure you wear your life jacket. You can never be too careful when boating. Remember to be courteous and obey all the boating laws. Please practice catch and release. Take a kid fishing!

Nominations Sought For High School All-American Fishing Team
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — With the explosive growth of high school bass fishing tournaments, young athletes are making a name for themselves in an organized sport quite different from traditional games like football, baseball and basketball.
Now there’s a program that offers national recognition for outstanding young anglers, just as there is in each of the “stick-and-ball” sports.
B.A.S.S. — the world’s largest fishing organization — today announced creation of the Bassmaster High School All-American Fishing Team, which honors the most successful competitive bass anglers in the country.
“Our goal is to provide skilled young anglers with the rewards and recognition they deserve,” said Hank Weldon, manager of B.A.S.S.’s high school and college fishing programs. “In addition, we are offering them an opportunity to demonstrate their fishing abilities on a national stage.”
To be considered for inclusion on the Bassmaster High School All-American Fishing Team, a student must be nominated by a parent, coach, teacher or other school official. Students currently enrolled in grades 10-12 with a current-year grade point average of 2.5 or higher are eligible. Judges will select up to two student anglers in each state. These All-State Fishing Team members become semifinalists in the selection of the 12-member All-American Team. Criteria include success in high school fishing tournaments and involvement in conservation efforts and other community service activities.
The 12 All-Americans will compete in a one-day Bassmaster All-American High School Tournament to be held in conjunction with the 2015 BASSfest event — one of nine Bassmaster Elite Series bass tournaments being held this year. Elite Series anglers will serve as “coaches” for the student anglers in the one-day tournament on Lake Barkley, Tennessee, June 6, 2015. The high school standouts will be honored before the weigh-in crowd at BASSfest, and each will be profiled in Bassmaster Magazine, read monthly by 3.2 million people.
“By focusing a national spotlight on high school students who excel at bass fishing, it’s our hope that more boys and girls will be attracted to the sport of fishing and introduced to a love of the outdoors,” said Bruce Akin, B.A.S.S. CEO. “In attending some of our own Costa Bassmaster High School tournaments, I’ve been amazed at the enthusiasm, fishing ability and character our young anglers have displayed. There’s no doubt some will go on to become Bassmaster Elite Series champions.”
Akin noted that all students who compete in high school fishing events are eligible, regardless of whether they are affiliated with B.A.S.S. or another fishing organization.
Notices have been sent to youth fishing directors of the B.A.S.S. Nation and other organizations, as well as leaders of state high school fishing programs. Adults can nominate students by filling out an online form at http://www.bassmaster.com/
A panel of judges will review the applications and select the High School All-American Fishing Team.
WITH ONGOING PRACTICAL INNOVATION SOUTHWICK SURVEY SAYS CONSUMERS CHOOSE PLANO TACKLE STORAGE SOLUTIONS MORE THAN ANY OTHER BRAND
| [print_link]WITH ONGOING PRACTICAL INNOVATIONSOUTHWICK SURVEY SAYS CONSUMERS CHOOSE PLANO TACKLE STORAGE SOLUTIONS MORE THAN ANY OTHER BRAND |
| Plano, IL (March 24, 2015) – In a recent internet-based survey of nearly 16,000 anglers completed by Southwick Associates, the nation’s premier outdoors market research firm, participants said they purchased Plano tackle storage products more in 2014 than any other brand. |
Plano’s continuous drive for innovation comes from a unique company dynamic rooted in over sixty years of making quality products that are meaningful to anglers. In an age of corporate conglomerates, there’s often an unfortunate and growing disconnect between company personnel and the ultimate consumers they serve; not so with Plano Molding, which – top to bottom – remains a company of fishermen for fishermen.
Ryan Kleckner, Plano Vice President of Engineering, is not unlike the typical Plano customer. “We’re driven to make the fishermen’s experience more efficient and, ultimately, more enjoyable,” says Kleckner, who spends time on the water each year himself, along with family and friends.
“Any time we can save an angler by keeping him or her more organized means more time spent doing what they enjoy… that’s real value.”
Individual preferences are also very real,” says Kleckner, “And we continually push ourselves to develop multiple solutions to tackle storage challenges… from soft bags to molded products and modular component systems, Plano continues to innovate on all fronts,” he concludes.
Indeed, Plano engineers and manufactures over 170 unique tackle storage products – more than any other manufacturer – including the new-for-2015 Plano Hybrid Hip Tackle Boxes and Marine Storage Trunks.
PLANO HYBRID HIP STOWAWAY BOX (723700) & HYBRID HIP TRAY BOX (723300)
The new Plano Hybrid Hip StowAway Box and Hybrid Hip Tray Box add an unparalleled level of functionality and sophistication to the traditional, telescoping three-tray design. Instead of opening your treasure chest of tackle into a trio of fixed and slotted trays, you’re yielded creative license to customize the arrangement with surgical precision.
Plano VP of Engineering Ryan Kleckner says versatility is what makes the Hybrid Hip Box so unique. “Instead of being categorized as a top-loading or front-loading tackle box, they do both. You can access the individual trays without opening the top, or go ahead and open it up and let the trays telescope-out for total access.”
Each tray doubles as a drawer. Open the clear outer door like an oven and access your chosen tray. Open the top of the tackle box, and the same trays are accessible and viewable from a vulture’s perspective. (Discover a hot bait and friends become scavenging birds of prey…)
Both durable boxes offer generous belly space for housing fishing line, bags of plastics, pliers…and even more Plano StowAway utility boxes! The lids feature two top-access storage areas. Three heavy-duty brass-bailed latches keep matters managed internally.
Plano’s new large-drawer and tray design is available in two configurations. The Hybrid Hip Tray Box features three conventional, removable trays. The more premium Hybrid Hip StowAway Box comes with a trifecta of Plano ProLatch™ 3700 utility boxes – each box (14″ x 9.13″ x 2″) sporting 4-24 customizable compartments.

PLANO MARINE TRUNKS (161960, 171960 & 191960)
Seems like no matter how big your boat, there’s never enough storage. In fact, the bigger the boat, the more essentials you need for a day on the water. From PFDs to extra clothing, rain gear, species and technique specific gear and tackle, emergency and tool kits, fenders, you name it, sometimes it feels like we need a boat to tow behind the boat – one for fishing and one for gear.
Thank goodness for Plano Marine Trunks.
Available in three introductory sizes, Plano Marine Trunks are the perfect storage solution. A clean boat is a happy boat.
Plano Marine Trunks have been painstakingly designed to take a beating from the water, salt and sun – even your bull in a china shop buddy who breaks everything. Nope, not your Plano Marine Trunk. These babies are made to withstand the rigors of real-world use like sucker punches from rough seas, off-road transport and shoves from dock onto deck.
These tough trunks are molded from a UV resistant HDPE material that resists fading, heat damage and ensures years of use and abuse. All sizes feature an O-ring seal to ensure contents stay dry and out of the elements. Go ahead and stack ‘em high. The reinforced, molded-groove lid is designed to support heavy loads without cracking or splitting. Finally, Plano Marine Trunks also feature sturdy, removable and easy to open/close buckles and molded ports that make securing your trunks easy with standard tie-down straps and padlocks.
161960 – 56 Quart Marine Storage Trunk / 24.00” x 15.00” x 13.00”
171960 – 68 Quart Marine Storage Trunk / 30.00” x 14.25” x 12.75”
191960 – 108 Quart Marine Storage Trunk / 37.75” x 14” x 18.25”
