The Avid Angler’s Wonder Rod

St. Croix’s Avid X earns seasoned veteran status in the year of its birth.

Park Falls, WI (March 11, 2015) – By the time he was 4 years old, chess prodigy Samual Reshevsky was making the ultimate checkmate commonplace; a few short years later he was defeating even the most accomplished players with ease. Then there was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart who, also by age 4, was considered one of the most prolific music composers of the Classical Era. And then who could forget Pablo Picasso who, you guessed it, was a 4-year-old when he brushed his first masterpiece: Le picador.

Satirically, one must wonder: What took these kids so long to get noticed?

Fishing has its own prodigy children, too. Every now and then, a brainchild prototype leaves the minds and machines of its creators graced with the predetermination to become a quick legend. Said phenomenon happened to St. Croix Rod.

A mere five-and-one-half months after its introduction at ICAST in July of 2014, the Avid X series was set free to stock St. Croix’s elite dealer base. Within mere weeks of delivery, many of the most ardent-anglers owned and were already praising Avid X.

Seven months after its debut, Avid X casting models garnered top rod honors in Field & Stream’s Best of the Best: New Fishing Gear 2015 – an honor parallel to a truck being recognized by Motor Trend.

Piling-it-on in a good sort of way, Game & Fish Publication/Sportsmen Magazine’s Readers’ Choice Award went to St. Croix Rod’s Avid X for “Favorite Spinning Rod.”

The editors have spoken, and so have the anglers.

So what makes the Avid X so perfect to palm and cast, as well as gobble up votes like a Republican candidate in Texas? Technology, craftsmanship and knowhow. Every Avid X spinning and casting rod is a ground-breaking version of the company’s ever-popular Avid Series, sharing the same core blank technology. This means it’s built on a premium, featherweight, high-modulus SCIII graphite blank with Integrated Poly Curve® tooling technology, which offers smooth-action alongside incredible sensitivity and strength.

A Fuji® reel seat with gunsmoke hood is fitted to the blank, surrounded by lightweight, all-new counterbalanced select-grade split-grip cork handle. There’s even an innovative hook-keeper to hold a bait of most any caliber, all the while abolishing issues associated with annoying line wrap.

As for the Kigan® Z micro-guide platform offered? The Z guides with slim, aluminum-oxide rings and reel-seat-matching gunsmoke frames are designed to reduce weight while maintaining proper stripper guide ring height for optimal line flow. To boot, the guides are skillfully wrapped with nylon thread and sealed with two coats of Flex Coat slow-cure finish.

Designed and handcrafted in Park Falls, Wisconsin, the new Avid X series melds the utmost performance with unparalleled value, in lengths, actions and powers built for extreme bass and walleye anglers. The series features 18 one- and two-piece spinning and casting models, with every 2-piece model sporting St. Croix’s exclusive slim-profile ferrules. And all are protected by a 15-year transferrable warranty backed by St. Croix Superstar Service. Most Avid X models retail at $200.

As the editors of Field & Stream put it: Best of all, you get St. Croix quality at a sweet price.

Gamakatsu TGW Nano Finesse Treble Review

Gamakatsu TGW Nano Finesse Treble Review

Walker Smith

These bass fishing treble hooks are incredibly thin, but have very little flex and retain sharpness quite well

I’ve always been very intrigued with lures that require treble hooks. It started at an early age and continued to develop into my career in the fishing industry. Given the choice, I’d rather catch a 5-pounder on a crankbait or topwater plug over a jig any day. Maybe it’s the added difficulty of landing a big bass on a set of trebles or perhaps it’s because I like to cover water quickly. Either way, it gets me fired up.

I was talking to Aaron Martens this past fall at a writers conference and he was telling me all about the new Gamakatsu TGW Nano Finesse Treble. He’s been working on the development of these hooks for quite some time and we were able to “nerd out” together about their design and applications. Needless to say, I was intrigued and made certain to try ‘em out when I returned home.

March 2015 Lake Anna Lake Report by Chris Craft

The ramp at Fish Tales is finally thawed out and open and ready for your boat!

Our monthly Big Fish Contest for March is being postponed until April. This way everyone has a complete month to fish for the prizes. We are also extending into May this year as well!!!

We will be paying $100 or a Yearly Ramp Pass ($125 value) to the anglers that catch the LARGEST BASS, CRAPPIE & STRIPER each month!!!!!

Here are the rules…….
MUST LAUNCH AT APM/FISH TALES and either pay the $8 ramp fee or be a yearly ramp pass holder.

Fish can be caught on artificial or live bait.

If fishing with a guide or employee,
RAMP FEE MUST BE PAID BEFORE OUTING.

Tournament caught fish are eligible, however they must be weighed on the porch scales.

OLD MAN WINTER has finally loosened his grip on Central Virginia and the lake is thawing out!!!! At the current time, water temps are just above freezing throughout most of the lake. There is still some ICE the uplake region and in the backs of many creeks. For the next week or so, there may be

ICE CHUNKS breaking off and floating out to the main lake. PLEASE USE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN NAVIGATING THE LAKE!!

BASS- The largemouth will start to pull out of deep water winter areas later this month as the water temps start to rise. For now look for them in and close to deep water on main lake points and on main points in the major creeks like Pigeon, Sturgeon and Contrary.

Suspending Jerkbaits such as Lucky Craft Pointers, Duo Realis, Luck E Strike RC Stix, Rattling Rogues and the many many more that are available to you to catch LARGE NUMBERS & LARGE FISH this month!!! Let the fish decide just how you fish the bait. A good rule to start with is a TWITCH TWITCH PAUSE cadence, with the pause being 5 to 10 seconds. Some days you may have to slow down a lot more and on other days they may be very aggressive!

FISH TALES HAS ALL OF YOUR JERKBAIT NEEDS FROM LUCKY CRAFT, LUCK E STRIKE, SPRO, DUO REALIS, STRIKE KING, RATTLING ROGUE & STORM!!

WE ARE AWAITING OUR SHIPMENT OF THE NEW RAPALA SHADOW RAP IN BOTH DEPTH RANGES!!!

Another favorite way for me to catch fish is with a 1/4oz Longbill Luck E Strike Scrounger rigged with a DAMIKI ARMOR SHAD. Make long casts to points and deeper flats that have baitfish nearby and be sure to maintain bottom contact with the bait for the entire cast!

On bright sunny days, the fish may pull up to boat docks, lay down trees and shallow rocks in search of warmer water. On days like this a tight wiggle crankbait like a RAPALA SHAD RAP can produce numbers of fish for you.

Spy Baiting has taken the fishing industry like a hurricane in August! Duo Realis’ Spin Bait 80 and Spin Bait 90 has been catching fish since 2014 and Fish Tales is now fully stocked on both sizes and in every color available!!!! To see a great video of how to fish this this unique bait go to www.duo-inc.co.jp/bass/en/realis and click on SPIN BAIT 80.

CRAPPIE- The Specks are still in deep water here on the MAIN SIDE at the current time. (From some of the reports that I am getting, if you are fortunate enough to have access to the HOT SIDE, fish can be caught from 5-10 feet of water.) Look for them to start making a move very soon. Bridge pilings, deep brush piles and deep rocks will hold fish all month long. Small minnows rigged on slip bobbers will be the best way to catch fish as long as they are deep.

Once they move up shallower, a 2″ Kalin Grub rigged on a 1/16oz jig head will put large amounts of these tasty vittles in the cooler for you! My top 3 colors are John Deere Green, Green Weenie and Wally World. A slow steady retrieve is the best, no need to hop or jerk the bait!

STRIPER- NO REPORT ON STRIPER AT THIS TIME!!!

LAKE LEVEL- FULL POOL

WATER TEMPS

UPLAKE- FROZEN

MIDLAKE- 37-42

DOWN LAKE- 42-45

RAYOVAC FLW SERIES SOUTHEAST DIVISION EVENT SET FOR LAKE GUNTERSVILLE

RAYOVAC FLW SERIES SOUTHEAST DIVISION EVENT SET FOR LAKE GUNTERSVILLE
 [print_link]
GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (March 10, 2015) – The Rayovac FLW Series is headed to Lake Guntersville March 19-21 for a tournament presented by Mercury Marine when as many as 300 pros and co-anglers will take to the water for the second stop of 2015 in the Southeast Division.
“The fishing is going to be a little tougher this tournament,” said Keystone Light pro Casey Martin of New Hope, Alabama, a two-time Forrest Wood Cup qualifier “We’ve had a lot of rain, which has pushed clay down into the river and lake. The water is usually fairly clear but right now its muddy.
“Anglers will definitely be targeting spots up the river where there is more grass. It’s also a bit shallower and warms up the quickest,” Martin said. “Specifically, areas up from Goose Pond and Mud Creek, which is the creek that usually fires first.”
Martin said that the grass on Guntersville is very healthy right now, and that lipless crankbaits would be a force to be reckoned with.
“The threadfin and gizzard shad stay in the grass, which in turn keeps the fish in there,” Martin said. “It’s one of those deals where they prefer the grass over open water. Anything that is loud, like Rat-L-Traps in sexy shad or red colors, will be productive.”
Martin also said that anglers have found success around bridges, but he doesn’t expect those spots to hold up for three days.
“A lot of recent tournaments have been won around the bridges, but I think they’ll be over exposed,” he said. “Too many guys will be practicing in those areas so there won’t be a very good shot at a winning stringer there.”
Pondering what kind of weight will win this tournament, the Guntersville veteran said anywhere from 60 pounds to 75 pounds over the three day stretch is plausible.
“It’s Guntersville, so someone always catches them,” said Martin. “This is the time of year where someone could come out of nowhere and win the tournament.”
Anglers will take off from Lake Guntersville State Park located at 7966 Alabama Highway 227 in Guntersville at 7 a.m. CDT each day. Weigh-in on days one and two will be held at the marina beginning at 2:30 p.m. On day three, weigh-in will be at Walmart located at 11697 U.S. Highway 431 in Guntersville beginning at 3:30 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public. The event is being hosted by the Marshall County Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Pros will fish for a top award of $40,000 plus a Ranger Z518C with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard if Ranger Cup guidelines are met. Co-anglers will cast for a top award consisting of a Ranger Z117 with 90-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard and $5,000 if Ranger Cup guidelines are met.
The Rayovac FLW Series consists of five divisions – Central, Northern, Southeast, Texas and Western. Each division consists of three tournaments and competitors will be vying for valuable points in each division that could earn them the opportunity to fish in the Rayovac FLW Series Championship. The 2015 Rayovac FLW Series Championship is being held Oct. 29-31 on the Ohio River in Paducah, Kentucky.

Moore Wins Ozark Division Opener on Grand Lake

Clint Moore of Big Cabin, Okla., won the March 7 Ozark Division event on Grand Lake with four bass worth 22 pounds, 14 ounces. Moore took home more than $5,000 for his trouble.

GROVE, Okla.  – Clint Moore of Big Cabin, Oklahoma, weighed four bass totaling 22 pounds, 14 ounces Saturday to win the first Walmart Bass Fishing League Ozark Division tournament of 2015 on Grand Lake. For his victory, Moore earned $5,337.

“It feels great to take home a check,” said Moore. “It’s what everyone is working for so it’s nice when it pays off.”

After running into some mechanical issues following takeoff, Moore was able to salvage his tournament and build a winning stringer by catching a 6½-pounder near the site where he broke down.

Eager to capitalize on the first bite and make up for lost time, Moore moved to a midlake area and tackled banks within the creek channels.

“We went to the same spots that we pre-fished,” Moore said. “The fish were headed back towards those steep banks to spawn.”

Moore sat in about 30 feet of water while he threw up to 15 foot depths. His baits of choice were a sexy shad-colored Skirmish Jerkbait and an umbrella rig rigged with Gene Larew Sweet Swimmers and blue smoke-colored Strike King KVD Swimbaits.

“If there were a lot of dead shad in the water due to the cold, the Skirmish jerkbait worked really well. I’d spool line out, and work it to get it deep, a technique called ‘long lining’,” said Moore. “If that wasn’t working I’d throw the umbrella rig.”

Out of the four fish he brought to the scale, two large ones were caught on the jerkbait while the other kicker was brought in on the umbrella rig.

“I only had five bites. It was a tough day, but we were able to make something of it and that’s what matters,” said Moore.

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Clint Moore, Big Cabin, Okla., four bass, 22-14, $4,652

Jordan Wins BFL Bulldog Opener on Lanier

Rob Jordan of Flowery Branch, Ga., won the March 7 Bulldog Division event on Lake Lanier with a five-bass limit weighing 19 pounds, 7 ounces. He earned more than $4,500 for his efforts.

GAINESVILLE, Ga. – Rob Jordan of Flowery Branch, Georgia, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 19 pounds, 7 ounces Saturday to win the first Walmart Bass Fishing League Bulldog Division tournament of 2015 on Lake Lanier. For his victory, Jordan earned $6,162.

“I’m very happy to finally win one,” said Jordan. “It’s my home lake and there are a lot of great fishermen here. It feels good.”

The Georgia angler said he took a different approach to reaching his limit by fishing the north end of the lake instead of his usual spots to the south. Jordan said the fish were active in the ditches and along the sunny clay banks because of the warmer water.

“We fished the Chestatee and Chattahoochee River arms looking for places that the sun was hitting first,” said Jordan. “The water may have only been only a degree or so warmer than elsewhere, but that’s what we needed.

“We found a lot of fish around boat docks and in trees. There were a lot of fresh pine trees in the water because of our recent ice storms,” continued Jordan. “That was big for me. If we found pockets where the sun was hitting the trees we knew there’d be bass.”

Jordan estimated that he caught  20 fish from 10:30 a.m. until weigh-in using a sexy shad-colored Z-Man Chatterbait Elite and a Xtreme Lure Creations custom blueback herring-colored Megabass jerkbait. He also threw an umbrella rig and pitched a jig, but said that he caught the majority of his bass on the jerkbait.

“I’m surprised how the day worked out,” said Jordan. “The majority of people around here prefer the south end of the lake. That’s where the bigger fish have been historically. But we covered a lot of water and it ended up working.”

The top 10 boaters finished the tournament in:

1st:          Rob Jordan, Flowery Branch, Ga., five bass, 19-7, $4,507 + $1,000 Mercury Bonus

2nd:         Jim Beavers, Manchester, Ga., five bass, 19-5, $2,253

3rd:          Patrick Bone, Cleveland, Ga., five bass, 18-12, $1,502

4th:          Karey Dickerson, Dahlonega, Ga., five bass, 17-9, $1,052

5th:          Stephen Walls, Dawsonville, Ga., four bass, 14-14, $901

6th:          Larry Gasaway, Canton, Ga., five bass, 14-12, $826

7th:          Mike Satterfield, Social Circle, Ga., five bass, 14-10, $751

8th:          Kelly Bagley, Adairsville, Ga., five bass, 14-9, $676

9th:          Allen Armour, Cumming, Ga., five bass, 14-7, $563

9th:          Scott Barnes, Cumming, Ga., five bass, 14-7, $563

Jordan also caught the biggest bass of the tournament in the pro division and earned the day’s Big Bass award of $655.

4th:          Aaron Conner, Gainesville, Ga., five bass, 11-11, $525

5th:          Christopher Wilder, Macon, Ga., five bass, 9-6, $450

6th:          Chris Shannon, Norcross, Ga., five bass, 9-5, $412

7th:          Richard Dunham, Waukegan, Ill., five bass, 9-4, $375

8th:          Kyle Rogers, Cleveland, Ga., four bass, 8-9, $337

9th:          Dean McDonald, Greer, S.C., three bass, 7-11, $300

10th:        Ken Smith, Lula, Ga., three bass, 7-2, $262
